We investigate why half of X-ray--selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in deep surveys lack signs of accretion in their optical spectra. The majority of these ``optically--dull'' AGN are no more than 6 times fainter than their host galaxies in rest-frame R-band; as such, AGN lines are unlikely to be overwhelmed by stellar continuum in at least half the sample. We find that optically--dull AGN have the mid--infrared emission and L(x)/L(IR) ratios characteristic of local Seyferts, suggesting that the cause of optical dullness is not missing UV--optical continua. We present the results of a Spitzer search for obscured AGN in the Chandra Deep Field-North, using both radio-excess and mid-infrared power-law selection. AGN selected via the former technique tend to lie at z ~ 1, have SEDs dominated by the 1.6 micron stellar bump, and have Seyfert-like X-ray luminosities (when detected in the X-ray). In contrast, the IRAC (3.6-8.0 micron) power-law selected AGN lie at higher redshifts of z ~ 2, and comprise a significant fraction of the most X-ray luminous AGN in the CDF-N. While there is almost no overlap in the AGN samples selected via these two methods, their X-ray detection fractions are very similar. Only 40% and 55% of the radio-excess and power-law samples are detected in the 2 Ms X-ray catalog, respectively. The majority of the AGN selected via both methods are consistent with being obscured (N_H > 10^(22) cm^-2), but not Compton-thick (N_H > 10^(24) cm^-2), although Compton-thick candidates exist in both samples. Spitzer IRAC selection is a powerful tool for identifying luminous AGN. For deep IRAC data, however, the AGN selection wedges currently in use are heavily contaminated by star-forming galaxies, especially at high redshift. Using the large samples of luminous AGN and high-redshift star-forming galaxies in COSMOS, we redefine the AGN selection criteria for use in deep IRAC surveys. The new IRAC criteria are designed to be both highly complete and reliable, and incorporate the best aspects of the current AGN selection wedges and of infrared power-law selection while excluding high redshift star-forming galaxies selected via the BzK, DRG, LBG, and SMG criteria. At QSO-luminosities of log L(2-10 keV) (ergs/s) > 44, the new IRAC criteria recover 75% of the hard X-ray and IRAC-detected XMM-COSMOS sample, yet only 38% of the IRAC AGN candidates have X-ray counterparts, a fraction that rises to 52% in regions with Chandra exposures of 50-160 ks. X-ray stacking of the individually X-ray non-detected AGN candidates leads to a hard X-ray signal indicative of heavily obscured to mildly Compton-thick obscuration (log N_H (cm^-2) = 23.5 +/- 0.4). While IRAC selection recovers a substantial fraction of luminous unobscured and obscured AGN, it is incomplete to low-luminosity and host-dominated AGN., 22 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, full resolution version available at http://www.stsci.edu/~donley/iragn_paper/

A first analysis of a deep blind HI survey covering the southern Zone of Avoidance plus an extension towards the north (196† ≤ ℓ ≤ 52†) obtained with the Multibeam receiver at the 64-m Parkes telescope reveals slightly over a thousand galaxies within the latitude completeness limit of |b| ≤ 5†. The characteristics and the uncovered large-scale structures of this survey are described, in particular the prominence of the Norma Supercluster, the possible cluster around PKS 1343–601 (both in the Great Attractor region), as well as the Local Void and the clustering in the Puppis region. In this blind HI survey HIZOA J0836–43 was discovered, one of the most massive spiral galaxies known to date (MHI = 7.3 × 1010 M⊙, MT = 1.1 × 1012 M⊙; H0 = 75 km/s/Mpc). Although of similar mass to Malin 1-like objects, this galaxy does not share their typical low-surface brightness properties, but seems an exceptionally massive but normal, high surface brightness, star-forming galaxy.
