1. Rotational Dynamics of Desorption: Methane and Ethane at Stepped and Kinked Platinum Surfaces

Abstract: When the interactions between surfaces and adsorbates are studied, molecular rotations are often neglected. In this work, we carefully analyse the rotational dynamics of methane and ethane molecules desorbing from two different platinum surfaces by means of first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. With respect to its rotational symmetry, methane - a benchmark system for adsorption dynamics - constitutes a spherical top and ethane is a symmetric top. We focus upon the achiral Pt{110}-(1x2) surface, which exhibits both mirror symmetry and a stepped geometry, and upon the chiral Pt{531} surface, which exhibits kink sites and lacks reflection symmetry. For methane, neither a strong nor directed angular momentum is induced by either of the two surfaces, whereas for ethane we find an increased directionality for the molecular rotation upon desorption from Pt{531} compared to Pt{110}-(1x2). The principle of microscopic reversibility implies that such results (in time reversal) will also be relevant to the process of adsorption, which would therefore be sensitive to the initial rotational state of incoming molecules.

Abstract: We report measurements of the flux-integrated ν̅μ and ν̅μ + νμ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced μ± and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, pμ>400 MeV/c and θμ200 MeV/c⁠, θπ600 MeV/c⁠, θp

Abstract: We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters θ 23 and Δ m 2 32 , which govern the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor PMNS neutrino oscillation model at T2K’s neutrino energy and propagation distance. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, muon-like events from each beam mode are used to measure these parameters separately for neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. Data taken from 1.49 × 10 21 protons on target (POT) in neutrino mode and 1.64 × 10 21 POT in antineutrino mode are used. The best-fit values obtained by T2K were sin 2 ( θ 23 ) = 0.51 + 0.06 − 0.07 ( 0.43 + 0.21 − 0.05 ) and Δ m 2 32 = 2.47 + 0.08 − 0.09 ( 2.50 + 0.18 − 0.13 ) × 10 − 3 eV 2 / c 4 for neutrinos (antineutrinos). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed. An analysis using an effective two-flavor neutrino oscillation model where the sine of the mixing angle is allowed to take nonphysical values larger than 1 is also performed to check the consistency of our data with the three-flavor model. Our data were found to be consistent with a physical value for the mixing angle.

Abstract: The T2K experiment reports updated measurements of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations using both appearance and disappearance channels. This result comes from an exposure of 14.9(16.4)×1020 protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. Significant improvements have been made to the neutrino interaction model and far detector reconstruction. An extensive set of simulated data studies have also been performed to quantify the effect interaction model uncertainties have on the T2K oscillation parameter sensitivity. T2K performs multiple oscillation analyses that present both frequentist and Bayesian intervals for the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata parameters. For fits including a constraint on sin2θ13 from reactor data and assuming normal mass ordering T2K measures sin2θ23=0.53−0.04+0.03 and Δm322=(2.45±0.07)×10−3 eV2 c−4. The Bayesian analyses show a weak preference for normal mass ordering (89% posterior probability) and the upper sin2θ23 octant (80% posterior probability), with a uniform prior probability assumed in both cases. The T2K data exclude CP conservation in neutrino oscillations at the 2σ level.

It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the finegrained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By reconstructing single photon kinematics from electron–positron pairs, we achieved 95% pure gamma ray sample from 5.738 ´ 1020 protons-on-targets neutrino mode data. We do not find positive evidence of NC induced single photon production in this sample. We set the model-dependent upper limit on the cross-section for this process, at 0.114 ´ 10-38 cm2 (90% C.L.) per nucleon, using the J-PARC off-axis neutrino beam with an average energy of ⟨En⟩ ~ 0.6 GeV. This is the first limit on this process below 1GeV which is important for current and future oscillation experiments looking for electron neutrino appearance oscillation signals.

10. On the Symmetry and Structure of Cubic Semiconductor Surfaces

Abstract: A systematic stereographic approach to the description of surface symmetry and structure, applied previously to face-centred cubic, body-centred cubic and hexagonal close-packed metals, is here extended to the surfaces of diamond-structure and zincblende-structure semiconductors. A variety of symmetry--structure combinations are categorised, and the chiral properties of certain cases emphasised. A general condition for non-polarity in the surfaces of zincblende materials is also noted.

11. Increased thermal stability of activated N2 adsorbed on K-promoted Ni{110}

Abstract: Industrial synthesis of ammonia takes place at high temperatures and pressures via the dissociative adsorption of molecular nitrogen on a transition metal catalyst. In contrast, biological ammonia synthesis occurs under ambient conditions via the hydrogenation of intact molecular nitrogen at the active site of an enzyme. We hypothesise that the latter process may be mimicked within an inorganic system if the intact nitrogen molecule can be polarised, rendering it particularly susceptible to attack by hydrogen. Furthermore, by analogy with the surface chemistry of carbon monoxide at alkali-modified nickel and cobalt surfaces, we consider whether such a polarisation may be achieved by coadsorption with potassium on the same or similar transition metals. Here, we report on reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy results, interpreted with the aid of first-principles density functional calculations, which reveal both similarities and differences between the behaviour of carbon monoxide and nitrogen. Importantly, our calculations suggest that the surface-induced dipole of molecular nitrogen can indeed be enhanced by the coadsorbed alkali metal.

12. Spontaneous Local Symmetry Breaking: A Conformational Study of Glycine on Cu{311}

Abstract: [Image] Understanding the interplay between intrinsic molecular chirality and chirality of the bonding footprint is crucial in exploiting enantioselectivity at surfaces. As such, achiral glycine and chiral alanine are the most obvious candidates if one is to study this interplay on different surfaces. Here, we have investigated the adsorption of glycine on Cu{311} using reflection–absorption infrared spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption, and first-principles density-functional theory. This combination of techniques has allowed us to accurately identify the molecular conformations present under different conditions and discuss the overlayer structure in the context of the possible bonding footprints. We have observed coverage-dependent local symmetry breaking, with three-point bonded glycinate moieties forming an achiral arrangement at low coverages, and chirality developing with the presence of two-point bonded moieties at high coverages. Abstract: Structural phases formed by adsorption of L-proline onto a Cu{311} surface in ultra-high vacuum were investigated using reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunnelling microscopy. An ordered structural phase formed by self-assembly of L-prolinate with (2,1;1,2) periodicity, and a transition from pure l3 bonding to a mixture of l3 and l2 bonding with increasing exposure at 300 K, were observed. This behaviour has broad parallels with that previously seen with alaninate and glycinate on Cu{311}, but the detailed correlation between structure and bonding, and their evolution during subsequent annealing, are markedly different for prolinate as compared to alaninate and glycinate. At annealing temperatures around 480–490 K, a new structural phase with (5,3;4,6) periodicity emerges. We tentatively attribute this to pyrrole-2-carboxylate, formed by dehydrogenation and aromatization of the pyrrolidine ring of prolinate. The observation of equal areas of the two possible mirror domains associated with the two possible adsorbate–substrate bonding enantiomers implies a prochiral intermediate.

Abstract: We investigate the adsorption and reaction of NO on Cu{311} via a combination of Reflection Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy (RAIRS) and first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT), providing a mechanistic understanding of the reaction as it progresses. Our results support an interpretation that N2O is formed via an associative mechanism involving N2O2 as the crucial intermediate species. Consistent with previous work, we find that such an intermediate readily converts between its initial nitrogen-down configuration and an inverted oxygen-down configuration, prior to decomposition by cleavage of a single N-O bond. As the reaction proceeds, the surface is progressively poisoned by the accumulation of O adatoms resulting from N-O bond scission, and we probe this aspect of the reaction in detail as a function both of temperature and of the surface’s pre-exposure to oxygen. Our results indicate that sustained conversion of NO to N2O on Cu would be contingent upon identifying some co-reactant capable of continuously removing O from the surface as the reaction proceeds

Abstract: We present lattice dynamical calculations for segregated and nonsegregated models of the monolayer Si-covered Ge(001) surface. The calculations were performed using the adiabatic bend-charge model, with structural parameters and electronic charge distributions taken from recent ab initio pseudopotential calculations. We find that adsorption of Si results in several characteristic phonon modes above the bulk continuum. Abstract: We report on vibrational properties obtained within the adiabatic bond-charge model for (2x1) reconstructed monolayer Ge- and Sb-adsorbed Si(001) surfaces. The phonon spectra of these surfaces are compared in detail with that of the clean Si(001)(2x1) surface presented in a similar recent study. We observe that acoustic-phonon modes on the covered surfaces are mainly localized in the adsorbate layers, while high-energy optical phonon modes are localized in the top few substrate layers. This phenomenon is attributed to the large mass difference between Sb (Ge) and Si atoms. Adsorption of these overlayers is shown to result. in characteristic new peaks in the phonon density of slates, which, together with differences in polarization of certain gap phonon modes, provide a distinct signature for each overlayer system. Abstract: Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infants is a major cause of viral bronchiolitis and hospitalisation. We have previously shown in a murine model that ongoing infection with the gut helminth Heligmosomoides polygyrus protects against RSV infection through type I interferon (IFN-I) dependent reduction of viral load. Yet, the cellular basis for this protection has remained elusive. Given that recruitment of mononuclear phagocytes to the lung is critical for early RSV infection control, we assessed their role in this coinfection model., Methods: Mice were infected by oral gavage with H. polygyrus. Myeloid immune cell populations were assessed by flow cytometry in lung, blood and bone marrow throughout infection and after secondary infection with RSV. Monocyte numbers were depleted by anti-CCR2 antibody or increased by intravenous transfer of enriched monocytes., Results: H. polygyrus infection induces bone marrow monopoiesis, increasing circulatory monocytes and lung mononuclear phagocytes in a IFN-I signalling dependent manner. This expansion causes enhanced lung mononuclear phagocyte counts early in RSV infection that may contribute to the reduction of RSV load. Depletion or supplementation of circulatory monocytes prior to RSV infection confirms that these are both necessary and sufficient for helminth induced antiviral protection., Conclusions: H. polygyrus infection induces systemic monocytosis contributing to elevated mononuclear phagocyte numbers in the lung. These cells are central to an anti-viral effect that reduces the peak viral load in RSV infection. Treatments to promote or modulate these cells may provide novel paths to control RSV infection in high risk individuals., (© 2024 The Author(s). Abstract: We describe a method for the calculation of chemical softness at metal surfaces, demonstrating its utility in understanding the adsorption of benzene, nitrobenzene and anisole at the Pt{111} surface. Based on this method, we show that directing effects due to either of the substituent groups are mostly swamped by substrate influences, while significant variations in softness within the groups themselves are readily apparent.

Abstract: We report a search for time variations of the solar ^{8}B neutrino flux using 5804 live days of Super-Kamiokande data collected between May 31, 1996, and May 30, 2018. Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The observed modulation is consistent with astronomical data: we measured an eccentricity of (1.53±0.35)%, and a perihelion shift of (-1.5±13.5) days.

23. Configuration of ammonia on Cu{311}: Infrared spectroscopy and first-principles theory.

Abstract: We describe Reflection Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy (RAIRS) and first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies of ammonia adsorption on the Cu{311} surface. Our experimental results indicate an upright chemisorbed species at low coverages, with at least one additional species accompanying this at higher coverages. Our high-coverage RAIRS data cannot be fully explained by DFT models containing only ammonia or its dissociation products, even allowing for molecular tilt and/or the formation of a bilayer. We therefore also consider urea and formamide as possible products of surface reaction with residual carbon monoxide, but these species are again not fully compatible with our observed spectra. Abstract: Cystic echinococcosis is caused by the larval stages (hydatids) of cestode parasites belonging to the species cluster Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato , with E. granulosus sensu stricto being the main infecting species. Hydatids are bladderlike structures that attain large sizes within various internal organs of livestock ungulates and humans. Hydatids are protected by the massive acellular laminated layer (LL), composed mainly of mucins. Parasite growth requires LL turnover, and abundant LL-derived particles are found at infection sites in infected humans, raising the question of how LL materials are dealt with by the hosts. In this article, we show that E. granulosus sensu stricto LL mucins injected into mice are taken up by Kupffer cells, the liver macrophages exposed to the vascular space. This uptake is largely dependent on the intact mucin glycans and on Clec4F, a C-type lectin receptor which, in rodents, is selectively expressed in Kupffer cells. This uptake mechanism operates on mucins injected both in soluble form intravenously (i.v.) and in particulate form intraperitoneally (i.p.). In mice harboring intraperitoneal infections by the same species, LL mucins were found essentially only at the infection site and in the liver, where they were taken up by Kupffer cells via Clec4F. Therefore, shed LL materials circulate in the host, and Kupffer cells can act as a sink for these materials, even when the parasite grows in sites other than the liver., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Abstract: Certified peer specialists (CPSs) may be uniquely situated to help address inequities within the behavioral health system. However, CPSs and other mental health care providers often do not have opportunities to discuss their experiences with racism in the workplace. The Southeast Mental Health Technology Transfer Center and Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network offered the six-part Racism and Recovery event series as a space for such discussions (N=356 participants). Participant responses on the Government Performance and Results Act survey (N=239) and supplemental Qualtrics survey (N=213) identified potential actions at the individual and organizational levels for disrupting racism. Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the experiences of certified peer specialists (CPSs) in delivering telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Fourteen semistructured interviews with CPSs were conducted from August to November 2020. Data were analyzed by using thematic analysis., Results: Helpful support from employers during the transition to telehealth included clear communication and access to training on telehealth technologies. Main barriers and facilitators were related to interpersonal relationships and logistical factors. CPSs reported that telehealth allowed them to continue to support the peers they serve but that the quality of interactions was not as good as with in-person services. Logistical challenges included inadequate equipment and Internet access., Conclusions: To support CPSs in delivering telehealth, employers can engage them in open and transparent communication about guidelines for service delivery, provide training and equipment, and allow them the flexibility to tailor service delivery modalities to the peers they serve.

29. Immunology of a unique biological structure: the Echinococcus laminated layer.

Abstract: The larval stages of the cestode parasites belonging to the genus Echinococcus grow within internal organs of humans and a range of animal species. The resulting diseases, collectively termed echinococcoses, include major neglected tropical diseases of humans and livestock. Echinococcus larvae are outwardly protected by the laminated layer (LL), an acellular structure that is unique to this genus. The LL is based on a fibrillar meshwork made up of mucins, which are decorated by galactose-rich O-glycans. In addition, in the species cluster termed E. granulosus sensu lato, the LL features nano-deposits of the calcium salt of myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (Insp6). The main purpose of our article is to update the immunobiology of the LL. Major recent advances in this area are (i) the demonstration of LL "debris" at the infection site and draining lymph nodes, (ii) the characterization of the decoy activity of calcium Insp6 with respect to complement, (iii) the evidence that the LL mucin carbohydrates interact specifically with a lectin receptor expressed in Kupffer cells (Clec4F), and (iv) the characterization of what appear to be receptor-independent effects of LL particles on dendritic cells and macrophages. 30. Clinical Utility and Outcome Prediction of Early ZnT8-IgG Testing and Titer in Type 1 Diabetes

Abstract: Objective: Type 1 diabetes autoantibodies are directed against multiple antigens including: glutamic acid decarboxylase, protein tyrosine phosphatase-like islet antigen 2 (IA2), insulin (IAA), and Zinc transporter 8 protein (ZnT8). The aim of our study was to determine if the presence or titer of ZnT8 antibodies (Ab) was predictive for clinical presentation at diagnosis or for the subsequent disease course., Methods: Between January, 2003 and May, 2019, 105 patients aged ≤21 years with a clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus had at least 1 autoantibody measured. A retrospective chart review was completed. At diagnosis, we evaluated the body mass index z-score, hemoglobin (HbA1c), and the presence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Complications analyzed post-diagnosis included episodes of DKA, the diagnosis of autoimmune disease, and the presence of vascular complications. We evaluated cumulative lifetime excess glucose as HbA1c area under the curve (AUC) >6%., Results: Seventy-one patients were ZnT8-Ab(+) (68%), with 19 having low titer ZnT8-Ab and 52 with high titer ZnT8-Ab. Follow-up ranged from 10 days to 15.7 years (median 2.08 years). There were no differences in the characteristics at disease onset or in the subsequent follow-up between those with and those without ZnT8-Ab or those with high or low titers of ZnT8 Ab, except for a small but statistically significant difference in cumulative excess glucose (HbA1c AUC >6%) between those with low and high titers (p=0.0095)., Conclusion: Our study adds to the limited literature on the effect of the presence and titer of ZnT8-Ab in pediatric diabetes. Abstract: We report a search for cosmic-ray boosted dark matter with protons using the 0.37 megaton×years data collected at Super-Kamiokande experiment during the 1996-2018 period (SKI-IV phase). We searched for an excess of proton recoils above the atmospheric neutrino background from the vicinity of the Galactic Center. No such excess is observed, and limits are calculated for two reference models of dark matter with either a constant interaction cross section or through a scalar mediator. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter with hadrons using directional information. The results present the most stringent limits on cosmic-ray boosted dark matter and exclude the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10^{-33}cm^{2} and 10^{-27}cm^{2} for dark matter mass from 1 MeV/c^{2} to 300 MeV/c^{2}.

Abstract: The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using 19.7 ( 16.3 ) × 10 20 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional 4.7 × 10 20 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on sin 2 θ 13 and the impact of priors on the δ CP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of sin 2 θ 23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on sin 2 θ 13 from reactors, sin 2 θ 23 = 0 . 561 - 0.032 + 0.021 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and Δ m 32 2 = 2 . 494 - 0.058 + 0.041 × 10 - 3 eV 2 using constant Δ χ 2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to δ CP = - 1 . 97 - 0.70 + 0.97 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and δ CP = 0 , π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than 2 σ credible level using a flat prior in δ CP , and just below 2 σ using a flat prior in sin δ CP . When the external constraint on sin 2 θ 13 is removed, sin 2 θ 13 = 28 . 0 - 6.5 + 2.8 × 10 - 3 , in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. 33. Dynamic Diastereomerism on Chiral Surfaces.

Abstract: Adsorption of chiral molecules on chiral surfaces implies diastereomerism, evident in the adoption of distinct adsorption geometries. We show here that this diastereomerism produces a signature in the motion of chiral molecules desorbing from a chiral surface. The rotations of S - and R -alanine molecules are analyzed upon desorption from R -Cu{531} using first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. S -Ala molecules exhibit a larger angular momentum, with a clear preference for one rotational sense, whereas no such preference is observed for R -Ala molecules upon desorption from this surface. These trends would be reversed for desorption from the S -Cu{531} surface. 34. Clinical Dental Hygienists' Experience Returning to Work After Closure of Dental Offices Due to COVID-19: A qualitative study.

Abstract: Purpose: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare providers includes physical, psychological, financial, and childcare issues. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of dental hygienists returning to clinical practice after the March 2020 closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological research design was used with virtual focus groups. Clinical dental hygienists who had worked a minimum of 3 days a week prior to dental practice closures in March 2020 and had returned to work in May 2020 were invited to participate through purposive sampling on dental hygiene social media sites. Demographic data was collected prior to a one-hour focus group session. Two investigators independently analyzed and coded the data using a qualitative data analysis software program. The themes identified were used to generate a description of the major findings. Results: Data saturation was achieved with (n=35) participants for a total of 13 focus groups. Most participants were female (89%), and the average age was 40 years. The following major themes were identified: physical issues; emotional; adherence to infection control protocols; fear of contracting/transmitting COVID-19; financial stress; our career was marginalized; and let's get back and make money. Conclusion: Dental hygienists experienced similar physical and mental health stressors as other health care professionals upon returning to work during the COVID-19 pandemic, however dental hygienists also reported feeling marginalized and undervalued. Results from this study suggest that dental hygienists need both personal and workplace support to manage the issues resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in order to retain them in the workforce., (Copyright © 2022 The American Dental Hygienists’ Association.)

36. The dehydrogenation of butane on metal-free graphene.

Abstract: The dehydrogenation of alkane feedstock to produce alkenes is a significant and energy intensive industrial process, generally occurring on metals and metal oxides. Here, we investigate a catalytic mechanism for the dehydrogenation of butane on single-layer, metal-free graphene using a combination of ab initio quantum chemical calculations and adsorption microcalorimetry. Dispersion-corrected Density Functional Theory (DFT) is employed to calculate transition states and energy minima that describe the reaction pathways connecting butane to the two possible products, but-1-ene and but-2-ene. The deprotonations occur with moderate energy barriers in the 0.54 eV-0.69 eV range. A strong agreement is observed between the results of the adsorption energies calculated by DFT (0.40 eV) and the measured differential heat of adsorption of n-butane on a graphitic overlayer. Abstract: The relationship between macrophages of the peritoneal cavity and the adjacent omentum remains poorly understood. Here, we describe two populations of omental macrophages distinguished by CD102 expression and use an adoptive cell transfer approach to investigate whether these arise from peritoneal macrophages, and whether this depends upon inflammatory status, the origin of peritoneal macrophages and availability of the omental niches. We show that whereas established resident peritoneal macrophages largely fail to migrate to the omentum, monocyte-derived resident cells readily migrate and form a substantial component of omental CD102 + macrophages in the months following resolution of peritoneal inflammation. In contrast, both populations had the capacity to migrate to the omentum in the absence of endogenous peritoneal and omental macrophages. However, inflammatory macrophages expanded more effectively and more efficiently repopulated both CD102 + and CD102 - omental populations, whereas established resident macrophages partially reconstituted the omental niche via recruitment of monocytes. Hence, cell origin determines the migration of peritoneal macrophages to the omentum and predisposes established resident macrophages to drive infiltration of monocyte-derived cells., (© 2022 The Authors. Abstract: The murine serous cavities contain a rare and enigmatic population of short-lived F4/80 lo MHCII + macrophages but what regulates their development, survival, and fate is unclear. Here, we show that mature F4/80 lo MHCII + peritoneal macrophages arise after birth, but that this occurs largely independently of colonization by microbiota. Rather, microbiota specifically regulate development of a subpopulation of CD11c + cells that express the immunoregulatory cytokine RELM-α, are reliant on the transcription factor EGR2, and develop independently of the growth factor CSF1. Furthermore, we demonstrate that intrinsic expression of RELM-α, a signature marker shared by CD11c + and CD11c - F4/80 lo MHCII + cavity macrophages, regulates survival and differentiation of these cells in the peritoneal cavity in a sex-specific manner. Thus, we identify a previously unappreciated diversity in serous cavity F4/80 lo MHCII + macrophages that is regulated by microbiota, and describe a novel sex and site-specific function for RELM-α in regulating macrophage endurance that reveals the unique survival challenge presented to monocyte-derived macrophages by the female peritoneal environment., (© 2022 The Authors. 39. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)-Can this be a boon to tide over ICU crisis in pandemic? A case series.

Abstract: Introduction: Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) disease has caused unusual overload of health care systems all over the world. We describe four severe COVID cases managed by non-intensivist., Cases and Outcome: We had four unvaccinated cases with acute onset influenza like illness with signs of respiratory failure. Apart from general and COVID-specific measures, we started Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) trial for these patients. All these patients were weaned off CPAP and were discharged once they recovered., Discussion: Limitation of bed numbers in ICU has caused unforeseen stress upon the system to manage sudden increase of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome during COVID pandemics. Studies have shown non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and high frequency nasal cannula (HFNC) have improved patient outcomes. But managing NIV and HFNC is resource intensive in terms of manpower and equipment. 40. First-Principles Dynamics of Fluorine Adsorption on Clean and Monohydrogenated Si{001}.

Abstract: The interaction of highly reactive species with solid surfaces can result in modes of adsorption quite distinct from the classic molecular and dissociative events that are usually thought to dominate. For instance, compelling experimental evidence suggests that adsorption of F 2 at the Si{001} surface is often initiated by abstraction (and binding at the surface) of just one fluorine atom from the molecule; the second fluorine atom subsequently experiences either a separate atomic adsorption event or ejection from the surface altogether. Molecular dynamics simulations using empirical potentials support this concept but massively overestimate the prevalence of atomic ejection. In this work, we report first-principles molecular dynamics calculations that correctly show atomic ejection to be rare while providing insight into the details of abstractive adsorption. In addition, we also examine the case of F 2 adsorption onto a monohydrogenated Si{001} surface, finding evidence for a different type of abstractive adsorption, in which a hydrogen atom may be removed from the surface to form a short-lived HFF intermediate. The latter rapidly decomposes to produce either HF or (via reaction with another surface hydrogen atom) H 2 .

Abstract: Hypoxemia is a defining feature of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), an often-fatal complication of pulmonary or systemic inflammation, yet the resulting tissue hypoxia, and its impact on immune responses, is often neglected. In the present study, we have shown that ARDS patients were hypoxemic and monocytopenic within the first 48 h of ventilation. Monocytopenia was also observed in mouse models of hypoxic acute lung injury, in which hypoxemia drove the suppression of type I interferon signaling in the bone marrow. This impaired monopoiesis resulted in reduced accumulation of monocyte-derived macrophages and enhanced neutrophil-mediated inflammation in the lung. Administration of colony-stimulating factor 1 in mice with hypoxic lung injury rescued the monocytopenia, altered the phenotype of circulating monocytes, increased monocyte-derived macrophages in the lung and limited injury. Thus, tissue hypoxia altered the dynamics of the immune response to the detriment of the host and interventions to address the aberrant response offer new therapeutic strategies for ARDS., (© 2022. 43. Systemic Influences of Mammary Cancer on Monocytes in Mice.

Abstract: There is a growing body of evidence that cancer causes systemic changes. These influences are most evident in the bone marrow and the blood, particularly in the myeloid compartment. Here, we show that there is an increase in the number of bone marrow, circulating and splenic monocytes by using mouse models of breast cancer caused by the mammary epithelial expression of the polyoma middle T antigen. Cancer does not affect ratios of classical to non-classical populations of monocytes in the circulation nor does it affect their half-lives. Single cell RNA sequencing also indicates that cancer does not induce any new monocyte populations. Cancer does not change the monocytic progenitor number in the bone marrow, but the proliferation rate of monocytes is higher, thus providing an explanation for the expansion of the circulating numbers. Deep RNA sequencing of these monocytic populations reveals that cancer causes changes in the classical monocyte compartment, with changes evident in bone marrow monocytes and even more so in the blood, suggesting influences in both compartments, with the down-regulation of interferon type 1 signaling and antigen presentation being the most prominent of these. Consistent with this analysis, down-regulated genes are enriched with STAT1/STAT2 binding sites in their promoter, which are transcription factors required for type 1 interferon signaling. However, these transcriptome changes in mice did not replicate those found in patients with breast cancer. Consequently, this mouse model of breast cancer may be insufficient to study the systemic influences of human cancer.

Abstract: Alveolar macrophages are the most abundant macrophages in the healthy lung where they play key roles in homeostasis and immune surveillance against airborne pathogens. Tissue-specific differentiation and survival of alveolar macrophages rely on niche-derived factors, such as granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and transforming growth factor–β (TGF-β). However, the nature of the downstream molecular pathways that regulate the identity and function of alveolar macrophages and their response to injury remain poorly understood. Here, we identify that the transcription factor EGR2 is an evolutionarily conserved feature of lung alveolar macrophages and show that cell-intrinsic EGR2 is indispensable for the tissue-specific identity of alveolar macrophages. Mechanistically, we show that EGR2 is driven by TGF-β and GM-CSF in a PPAR-γ–dependent manner to control alveolar macrophage differentiation. Functionally, EGR2 was dispensable for the regulation of lipids in the airways but crucial for the effective handling of the respiratory pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae . Last, we show that EGR2 is required for repopulation of the alveolar niche after sterile, bleomycin-induced lung injury and demonstrate that EGR2-dependent, monocyte-derived alveolar macrophages are vital for effective tissue repair after injury. Collectively, we demonstrate that EGR2 is an indispensable component of the transcriptional network controlling the identity and function of alveolar macrophages in health and disease.

Abstract: The term 'macrophage' encompasses tissue cells that typically share dependence on the same transcriptional regulatory pathways (e.g. the transcription factor PU.1) and growth factors (e.g. CSF1/IL-34). They share a core set of functions that largely arise from a uniquely high phagocytic capacity manifest in their ability to clear dying cells, pathogens and scavenge damaged, toxic or modified host molecules. However, macrophages demonstrate a remarkable degree of tissue-specific functionality and have diverse origins that vary by tissue site and inflammation status. With our understanding of this diversity has come an appreciation of the longevity and replicative capacity of tissue-resident macrophages and thus the realisation that macrophages may persist through tissue perturbations and inflammatory events with important consequences for cell function. Here, we discuss our current understanding of the parameters that regulate macrophage survival and function, focusing on the relative importance of the tissue environment versus cell-intrinsic factors, such as origin, how long a cell has been resident within a tissue and prior history of activation. Abstract: Dyslipidemia is a main driver of cardiovascular diseases. The ability of macrophages to scavenge excess lipids implicate them as mediators in this process and understanding the mechanisms underlying macrophage lipid metabolism is key to the development of new treatments. Here, we investigated how adipose tissue macrophages regulate post-prandial cholesterol transport. Single-cell RNA sequencing and protected bone marrow chimeras demonstrated that ingestion of lipids led to specific transcriptional activation of a population of resident macrophages expressing Lyve1, Tim4, and ABCA1. Blocking the phosphatidylserine receptor Tim4 inhibited lysosomal activation and the release of post-prandial high density lipoprotein cholesterol following a high fat meal. Both effects were recapitulated by chloroquine, an inhibitor of lysosomal function. Moreover, clodronate-mediated cell-depletion implicated Tim4 + resident adipose tissue macrophages in this process. Thus, these data indicate that Tim4 is a key regulator of post-prandial cholesterol transport and adipose tissue macrophage function and may represent a novel pathway to treat dyslipidemia., (© 2021. Abstract: The interfacial behaviour of water remains a central question to fields as diverse as protein folding, friction and ice formation. While the properties of water at interfaces differ from those in the bulk, major gaps in our knowledge limit our understanding at the molecular level. Information concerning the microscopic motion of water comes mostly from computation and, on an atomic scale, is largely unexplored by experiment. Here, we provide a detailed insight into the behaviour of water monomers on a graphene surface. The motion displays remarkably strong signatures of cooperative behaviour due to repulsive forces between the monomers, enhancing the monomer lifetime ( ≈ 3 s at 125 K) in a free-gas phase that precedes the nucleation of ice islands and, in turn, provides the opportunity for our experiments to be performed. Our results give a molecular perspective on a kinetic barrier to ice nucleation, providing routes to understand and control the processes involved in ice formation.

49. Comparative study of single-atom gold and iridium on CeO 2 {111}.

Abstract: Oxide-supported single-atom catalysts have shown promise for a variety of heterogeneous processes. In addition to their inherent activity and selectivity, these materials come at much lower financial cost, avoiding the use of full-bodied precious-metal catalysts, but at the conceptual expense that more complex structural and electronic considerations need to be understood if we are to exploit their full potential. Here, we focus on the adsorption of single-atom iridium at both stoichiometric and defective CeO 2 {111} surfaces, by means of first-principles density functional theory. Reference calculations for the adsorption of single-atom gold, on the same set of substrates, provide a valuable set of benchmarks against which to interpret our iridium results.

50. Surface Chirality Influences Molecular Rotation upon Desorption.

Abstract: Chiral surfaces offer great potential as a medium for enantioselective synthesis or separation, yet their dynamic enantiospecific interactions with adsorbates are not well understood. Here, the influence of chiral surfaces on the molecular rotations of desorbing molecules is investigated. Formic acid desorption from Cu{531} and Cu{110} serve as model systems for desorption processes of an achiral adsorbate from a chiral and an achiral surface. Our first-principles molecular dynamics study reveals a much larger and more directed angular momentum for molecules desorbing from the chiral surface and a clear preference for one sense of rotation. This result provides new insight into desorption and adsorption processes and propensities on chiral surfaces.
