Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) is a science education partnership among NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Lewis Center for Educational Research (LCER), offering unique opportunities for K -12 students and their teachers. As part of a long-term Jupiter synchrotron radiation (JSR) flux density monitoring program, LCER has been carrying out Jupiter observations with some student participation. In this paper we present the results of processed data sets observed between March 6, 2015 and April 6 2018. The data are divided into 5 epochs, grouped by time. We derive JSR beaming curves at different epochs and Earth declinations. We present a comparison of the observed beaming curves with those derived from most recent models for the radiation belts. Our results show an increasing trend of the JSR flux density which seem consistent with the models for the magnetospheric solar wind interactions., Comment: 24 pages; 9 figures To be published in PASP

Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) is a science education partnership among NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and the Lewis Center for Educational Research (LCER), offering unique opportunities for K -12 students and their teachers. The GAVRT program operates a 34-m radio telescope with a wide-band, low noise receiver, which is tunable in four independent dual-polarization bands from 3 to 14 GHz. The annular eclipse of the Sun on 2012 May 20 was observed by GAVRT as part of education outreach. In this paper we present the results of this eclipse data and discuss the multi-wavelength strip scan brightness distribution across three active regions. We derive the source brightness temperatures and angular sizes as a function of frequency and interpret the results in terms of the gyroresonance mechanism. We show examples of the increasing brightness and widening of source size (isogauss surface) with wavelength as evidence for gyroresonance emission layers of broader (diverging ) isogauss surfaces of the magnetic field geometry in the corona above solar surface. We present an example how the derived frequency - brightness temperature relationship is translated to a magnetic field - brightness temperature relationship under the frame-work of gyroresonance emission. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of GAVRT bands as excellent probes to study the layers of the corona above the active regions (sun spots), in particular the prevalence of the gyroresonance mechanism. Our results provide a frame-work for multiwavelength cm-wavelength eclipse observations and illustrate how the GAVRT program and K- 12 student/teacher participation can produce science data useful to the scientific community and science missions., Comment: 21 pages; 8 figures To be published in PASP

In two-dimensional lattices the electronic levels are unevenly spaced, and the density of states (DOS) displays a logarithmic divergence known as the Van Hove singularity (VHS). This is the case in particular for the layered cuprate superconductors. The scanning tunneling microscope (STM) probes the DOS, and is therefore the ideal tool to observe the VHS. No STM study of cuprate superconductors has reported such an observation so far giving rise to a debate about the possibility of observing directly the normal state DOS in the tunneling spectra. In this study, we show for the first time that the VHS is unambiguously observed in STM measurements performed on the cuprate Bi-2201. Beside closing the debate, our analysis proves the presence of the pseudogap in the overdoped side of the phase diagram of Bi-2201 and discredits the scenario of the pseudogap phase crossing the superconducting dome., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have used scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate short-length electronic correlations in three-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(10+d) (Bi-2223). We show that the superconducting gap and the energy Omega_dip, defined as the difference between the dip minimum and the gap, are both modulated in space following the lattice superstructure, and are locally anti-correlated. Based on fits of our data to a microscopic strong-coupling model we show that Omega_dip is an accurate measure of the collective mode energy in Bi-2223. We conclude that the collective mode responsible for the dip is a local excitation with a doping dependent energy, and is most likely the (pi,pi) spin resonance., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present studies of the magnetic field distribution around the vortices in LuNi2B2C. Small-angle neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice (VL) in this material were extended to unprecedentedly large values of the scattering vector q, obtained both by using high magnetic fields to decrease the VL spacing and by using higher order reflections. A square VL, oriented with the nearest neighbor direction along the crystalline [110] direction, was observed up to the highest measured field. The first-order VL form factor, |F(q10)|, was found to decrease exponentially with increasing magnetic field. Measurements of the higher order form factors, |F(qhk)|, reveal a significant in-plane anisotropy and also allow for a real-space reconstruction of the VL field distribution., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The magnetic field distribution around the vortices in TmNi2B2C in the paramagnetic phase was studied experimentally as well as theoretically. The vortex form factor, measured by small-angle neutron scattering, is found to be field independent up to 0.6 Hc2 followed by a sharp decrease at higher fields. The data are fitted well by solutions to the Eilenberger equations when paramagnetic effects due to the exchange interaction with the localized 4f Tm moments are included. The induced paramagnetic moments around the vortex cores act to maintain the field contrast probed by the form factor., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We performed the first scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on the pyrochlore superconductor KOs2O6 (Tc = 9.6 K) in both zero magnetic field and the vortex state at several temperatures above 1.95 K. This material presents atomically flat surfaces, yielding spatially homogeneous spectra which reveal fully-gapped superconductivity with a gap anisotropy of 30%. Measurements performed at fields of 2 and 6 T display a hexagonal Abrikosov flux line lattice. From the shape of the vortex cores, we extract a coherence length of 31-40 {\AA}, in agreement with the value derived from the upper critical field Hc2. We observe a reduction in size of the vortex cores (and hence the coherence length) with increasing field which is consistent with the unexpectedly high and unsaturated upper critical field reported., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Revtex 4
