Anecdotally it is often said that fishers are the best inventors of marine conservation technologies. In this paper I describe case studies of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) and dolphin conservation technology, offering empirical evidence that fishers are successful inventors of marine conservation technology. I describe the Local Inventor Effect, in which adoption of a technology is disproportionately high in the geographic area near the inventor′s home. In one case, the adoption of a local invention was 600% higher than that of the next most popular device. Further, I present the Successful Inventor Profile for inventors of marine conservation technologies. This profile consists of three characteristics (1) a successful conservation technology inventor will have extensive experience relevant to the problem and potential solutions, (2) he or she will have extensive experience in fabrication, and (3) he or she will have the ability and tendency to employ mental and/or physical models, to assemble and refine inventions.

We report the synthesis of 1,4-diaryl-5-cyano-1,2,3-triazoles from azides and alkynes via two copper-mediated steps. Aryl-substituted cyanotriazoles are emissive in nonpolar solvents. When the N 1 -aryl group is electron-donating, the photoconversion of a cyanotriazole to a cyanoindole is efficient. Each of the seven pairs of 4- and 5-cyanotriazole isomers is photoconverted to either distinctive cyanoindoles without rearrangement or a major cyanoindole product via the presumed common intermediate azirine. The resulting cyanoindoles appear to be stronger emitters in polar solvents than the parent cyanotriazoles.

In iteroparous female salmonids, the growth and reproductive endocrine axes interact during the period after spawning. Energy depletion due to pre-spawn fasting, migration, and ovarian development must be restored, and the next reproductive cycle is initiated in consecutively maturing fish. In the natural environment, food availability is often limited during the post-spawn period. To investigate the growth and reproductive endocrinology of the post-spawn period, we sampled female rainbow trout over the 30 weeks following their first spawning. Fish were fasted for 2 months prior to spawning, then fed a standard or a restricted ration. Analysis was confined to reproductive fish. Plasma estradiol-17β decreased during the 8 weeks following spawning and then began increasing in both ration groups and was lower in feed-restricted versus standard ration fish from 8 weeks onward. Plasma insulin-like growth factor-1 increased over the same period and then remained constant in both ration groups and was lower in feed-restricted versus standard ration fish from week 8 to week 30. Plasma growth hormone decreased following spawning in standard ration fish and became elevated in feed-restricted versus standard ration fish at 20- and 30-weeks post-spawn. Growth rates, condition factor, and muscle lipid levels were higher in standard ration versus feed-restricted fish within 2-4 weeks after spawning. Consecutive and skip repeat spawning (1- or ≥2-year spawning interval) life histories commonly occur in seasonally breeding iteroparous fishes. Spawning interval variation is driven by energetic status and impacts fisheries management. In salmonids, energetic status (either absolute level of energy reserves or the rate of change of energy reserves, i.e., energy balance) is thought to determine reproductive trajectory during a critical period ∼1 year prior to initial spawning. However, information on repeat spawners is lacking. To examine the timing and the aspects of energetic status that regulate repeat spawning interval, female steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were fasted for 10 weeks after spawning and then fed ad libitum and compared to ad libitum fed controls. Plasma growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels were measured to assess long-term energy balance. Plasma estradiol levels showed that some fish in both groups initiated a consecutive spawning cycle. In fasted fish, GH was lower at spawning in consecutive versus skip spawners. In consecutive spawners, GH was higher at spawning in fed versus fasted fish. These results suggest that fish with a less negative energy balance at spawning initiated reproductive development in the absence of feeding, but that feeding during the post-spawning period enabled initiation of reproduction in some fish with a more negative energy balance at spawning. Thus, both energy balance at spawning and feeding after spawning regulated reproductive schedules. Many iteroparous fishes spawn after skipping one or more yearly cycles, which impacts recruitment estimates used for fisheries management and conservation. The physiological mechanisms underlying the development of consecutive and skip spawning life histories in fishes are not well understood. In salmonids, lipid energy reserves and/or growth are thought to regulate the initiation of reproductive maturation during a critical period ~1 year prior to spawning. The fasting spawning migration of summer-run steelhead trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) results in significant depletion of energy reserves during the proposed critical period for repeat spawning. To determine whether and when lipid energy reserves and growth influence repeat spawning, measures of lipid energy reserves, growth rate and reproductive development were tracked in female steelhead trout from first to second spawning as a consecutive or skip spawner in captivity. Plasma triglyceride (TG) levels and growth rate were elevated by 10 weeks after spawning in reproductive (i.e. consecutive spawning) versus non-reproductive (i.e. skip spawning) individuals. Muscle lipid (ML) levels, condition factor and plasma estradiol levels increased at later time points. The early differences in plasma TG levels and increases in growth rate are attributable to differential rates of feeding and assimilation between the groups following spawning. A year after spawning, plasma TG levels, MLs and growth rate decreased in consecutive spawners, attributable to transfer of lipid reserves into the ovary. During the year prior to second spawning, energy reserves and plasma estradiol levels were higher in reproductive skip spawners versus consecutive spawners, reflecting the energy deficit after first spawning. These results suggest that the decision to initiate ovarian recrudescence occurs by 10 weeks after first spawning and are consistent with the differences in energy reserves acquired following spawning being a consequence of that decision. This information will increase the success of conservation projects reconditioning post-spawning summer-run steelhead trout.

Background: Cyanoacrylates, also known as tissue adhesives or skin glues, are commonly used as sealants for lacerations and incisions and have found utility in excisional and cosmetic surgeries in both outpatient and operating room settings., Objective: To review the surgical literature on the utilities, advantages, disadvantages, and special uses of cyanoacrylates applicable to dermatology., Materials and Methods: PubMed was reviewed for relevant articles related to cyanoacrylates and their use in skin closures. Articles unrelated to cutaneous closures were excluded., Results: Tissue adhesives polymerize to a water resistant, pliable film after application to approximated wound edges and have antibacterial properties. Adhesives slowly slough off as the wound heals, typically after 5 days. Compared with 5-0 nonabsorbable suture, adhesives provide similar tensile strength and similar patient and surgeon satisfaction. Although slightly more expensive than sutures, tissue adhesives obviate the need for wound dressings and suture removal. They do not perform as well as sutures for wounds under higher tension or in the setting of moisture and inadequate hemostasis., Conclusion: Cyanoacrylates serve as a safe and effective suture alternative in appropriate dermatologic surgeries and procedures.

The present study describes the first molecular characterization of environmental and clinical isolates of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in Wales. Over a 3-month period (May-July 2000), 134 isolates of VRE (89 Enterococcus faecium and 45 Enterococcus faecalis) were isolated from the patient environment of the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, Wales, UK. In addition, over the same time-period, 24 clinical isolates of VRE (20 isolates of E. faecium and four isolates of E. faecalis) were obtained from 14 patients. All study isolates were subjected to PFGE typing and their van genotypes were determined by using multiplex PCR. The vanA PCR product (231 bp) was evident in 146 (92 %) of 158 VRE isolates; the remaining 12 isolates (8 %) were positive for the vanB gene. All isolates of E. faecalis were found to be vanA-positive. In total, 16 PFGE banding profiles (pulsotypes) were observed for environmental isolates of E. faecium, whilst eight pulsotypes were found for isolates of E. faecalis. Some of these pulsotypes were isolated from multiple sites, whereas others were more restricted in their distribution. Eleven pulsotypes were evident for clinical isolates and eight of these (representing 11 isolates) were also encountered in environmental isolates. Eleven clinical isolates of E. faecium (55 %) shared an identical pulsotype that was not detected in environmental isolates. These results demonstrate a heterogeneous environmental population of VRE and an association of certain strains with clinical isolates. Predominance of a single pulsotype (not detected in the environment) amongst clinical isolates suggests non-environmental transmission between patients.

Antibiotic resistance is an increasing threat in hospitals and both morbidity and mortality from infections are greater when caused by drug-resistant organisms. Whilst hospitals are universally blamed for this increase, there is an insufficient appreciation of external sources of resistance, such as when patients are admitted to hospitals from long-term care facilities in the community. The use of antibiotics in family practice and animal husbandry has also been linked to drug resistance being encountered in the hospital setting. Justifiable hospital antibiotic use, which can be life saving, may lead to 'collateral damage' with the emergence of resistance in non-target bacteria in the bowel, for example, with subsequent spread by cross-infection. At a management level, antibiotic resistance can have a significant impact on the ability of hospitals to maintain services since cohorting of patients and ward closures from outbreaks add to continuing bed shortages and waiting lists. Hospital laboratories must review their standard operating procedures since some resistance mechanisms may be missed by current methods of antibiotic susceptibility testing. With increasing public concern from press reports of 'multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus killer virus' and other drug-resistant organisms, there will inevitably be a push by national authorities for more surveillance data on antibiotic resistance; however, the cost-effectiveness of different surveillance strategies should be considered. Clinical governance and risk management are dominant themes in the National Health Service and hospital hygiene and antibiotic resistance are likely to feature prominently in audits related to these themes in the near future.

A holistic approach to the care of the terminally ill must include considerations of ethnic variables and cultural traditions influencing views of death. The implications of ethnicity for health care delivery, direct patient care, and interpretation of patient and family responses are discussed.

College freshmen in an educational opportunity program were trained in an orientation program by behavior rehearsal techniques to cope with the social demands of some in-class and out-of-class situations. At the end of their freshman year, data were available on 48 male and 51 female black students and 23 male and 21 female white students. Trainees earned better grades than controls on the campus where training was offered but not at smaller branch campuses. Results suggest the importance of para-academic skills of meeting assignments and knowing when, where, and how to seek help. Academic performance may be enhanced by training in campus and classroom social skills.

Intradural disc herniation of an intervertebral disc is a rare occurrence. The clinical presentation varies in severity and a high level of suspicion is necessary to determine the diagnosis. This is a case report of an intradural disc herniation in a young male. A review of the literature identifying the pathophysiologic mechanisms of intradural disc herniation, diagnostic imaging techniques, and treatment is presented.
