Abstract

Grounded language acquisition -- learning how language-based interactions refer to the world around them -- is amajor area of research in robotics, NLP, and HCI. In practice the data used for learning consists almost entirely of textual descriptions, which tend to be cleaner, clearer, and more grammatical than actual human interactions. In this work, we present the Grounded Language Dataset (GoLD), a multimodal dataset of common household objects described by people using either spoken or written language. We analyze the differences and present an experiment showing how the different modalities affect language learning from human in-put. This will enable researchers studying the intersection of robotics, NLP, and HCI to better investigate how the multiple modalities of image, text, and speech interact, as well as show differences in the vernacular of these modalities impact results., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Systemic steroids are frequently used in critically ill patients for their anti-inflammatory properties. Potential benefits of these agents should be balanced against their known side effects. In this paper, we review trials assessing the use of systemic steroids in common conditions requiring admission to the intensive care unit. These include septic shock, the acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe pneumonia, COVID-19, and hypercapnic respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We will mainly focus on well-conducted randomized controlled trials to determine whether steroids should be administered to critically ill patients presenting with these conditions. 9. Electrochemical and catalytic investigation of catalysis by gold

Abstract

The performance of gold/graphite as an oxidation catalyst has been investigated in an electrochemical cell (electrooxidation at ambient temperature and pressure) and in a high pressure reactor (conventional catalytic oxidation typically at 3 bar and 333 K). A range of gold/graphite catalysts having various metal loadings were prepared and characterised by cyclic voltammetry (CV), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The technique of lead underpotential deposition (Pdupd) was used to reveal the presence of {111}, {100}, and {110} facets in the surfaces of the gold microcrystals. Oxidation of 1-propanol to propionic acid, of 2-propanol to acetone, and of glycerol to wide range of products was investigated both in electrooxidation and in conventional catalytic oxidation. Variation of the surface morphology of the gold active phase was achieved by (i) thermal annealing and sintering of the catalysts under air and under hydrogen, (ii) deposition of bismuth onto the gold surface, and (iii) preparation of further catalysts in which Au was deposited onto Pt/graphite. Conventional catalytic oxidation of the 1-propanol, 2-propanol, and glycerol over the full range of gold-containing catalysts is reported. Variations in catalyst structure were accompanied by changes in activity and selectivity, indicating that these reactions were indeed structure sensitive. However, few correlations of these experimental outcomes with the surface states identified by the voltammetric techniques were evident.

16. Transfer Learning of Grounded Language Models For Use In Robotic Systems

Abstract

Grounded language acquisition is the modeling of language as it relates to physical objects in the world. Grounded language models are useful for creating an interface between robots and humans using natural language, but are ineffective when a robot enters a novel environment due to lack of training data. I create a novel grounded language dataset by capturing multi-angle high resolution color and depth images of household objects, then collecting natural language text and speech descriptions of the objects. This dataset is used to train a model that learns associations between the descriptions and the color and depth percepts. Vision and language domains are embedded into an intermediate lower dimensional space through manifold alignment. The model consists of two simultaneously trained neural nets, one each for vision and language. Triplet loss ensures that the two spaces are closely aligned in the embedded space by attracting positive associations and repelling negative ones. First, separate models are trained using the University of Washington RGB-D and UMBC GLD datasets to get baseline results for grounded language acquisition on domestic objects. Then the baseline model trained on the UW RGB-D data is fine tuned through a second round of training on UMBC GLD. This fine tuned model performs better than the model trained only on UMBC GLD, and in less training time. These experiments represent the first steps of the ability to transfer grounded language knowledge from previously trained models on large datasets onto new models operating on robots operating in novel domains.
