Abstract

A better understanding of adolescent recovery is needed and will create opportunities to enhance recovery-oriented systems of care. The current study surveyed adolescents on behavioral and social indicators, substance use problem resolution and recovery status, and elements of recovery. The most commonly endorsed element of problem resolution was "stop completely," followed by "not hanging out with friends who use a lot," and "getting counseling for alcohol/drug use." Approximately 40% of youth in recovery did not select abstinence as a key element of recovery. Additional research on recovery identity among adolescents is needed to clarify this finding. 15. A Critical Exploration of Nursing Leaders Storied Experiences of Phronesis within the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

In this critical hermeneutic study, I critically explore nursing leaders’ storied experiences of phronesis within the COVID-19 pandemic. Phronesis is the ability to perceive a situation and deliberate well in order to determine the best course of action for human beings. Theoretically informed by critical social theories, I considered how the enactment of phronesis was often performed according to normative discourses and the socio-political historical situatedness of nursing leaders. I utilized Frank’s (2012a) narrative dialogic analysis to interpret and bring into conversation participant stories, and multiple discursive voices. Based on Pinkola Estés (1995), I use the metaphor of the wild wolf to frame the narratives of nursing leaders’ who, I argue have at times, relegated their ‘wildish nature’ to the poorest lands of their authentic self. Amidst the chaos and unknowns of the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic nursing leaders collaborated with leadership “command teams” to make decisions based on institutional and government directives. The findings in this research demonstrate how phronesis is often performative based on socially constructed leadership models that have created images of how to be a competent and effective leader. Managerialist discourses and hegemonic cultures are argued to lurk in the shadows and to sustain the health care hierarchy shaping nursing leaders’ prioritization of dominant views over nursing perspectives. While nursing leaders in this research often framed their thinking and actions based on altruistic values and beliefs, the discrepancy between values, beliefs and actions was also evident in the data. It is argued that a consideration of what is “best” in nursing leadership practice requires reflexivity and a critical understanding of how discourses influence one’s identity and world view. Phronesis was revealed through nursing leaders embodied sense of the right thing to do and the articulation of clear principles that underpin decision-making and actions. Recognizing how hegemonic cultures shape one’s ‘self’ has the potential to transform and (re)connect nursing leaders with their authentic selves. Additionally, interpretations offer considerations for nursing leadership education and professional development by taking into account how managerialist and institutional discourses shape nursing leader’s ontological perspectives. Greater attention to critical perspectives, reflexivity, knowing and naming institutional discourses and cultures has the potential to inform a reimagining of phronesis as a ‘way of being’ for nursing leaders.

Abstract

Understanding how parents, and other primary caregivers, perceive and experience early childhood programs and services is essential for identifying family-centered facilitators and barriers to service utilization. Therefore, this paper aims to explore parent knowledge of and experiences with community efforts of an early childhood system in Illinois: the All Our Kids Early Childhood Networks (AOK Networks). Our research team conducted focus group interviews with 20 parents across four Illinois counties. A semi-structured interview guide was used to examine parent perceptions of an early childhood system's community efforts in promoting the health and well-being of children aged from birth to five. Thematic network analysis was used to analyze all focus group data. Parents indicated three salient themes, including: (1) comprehensive information sharing practices, (2) diverse service engagement, and (3) barriers to service access. Overall, parents reported general satisfaction with the quality of available services and provided feedback regarding identified areas of need to increase the accessibility and utilization of local services. Engaging parents as partners is essential to the effective implementation of family-centered early childhood services. Families are the experts of their lived experiences, and incorporating their voices in program development and evaluation efforts works to increase positive child and family outcomes. 17. International Education in an Altered World.

In the changed international climate following September 11, international education, which includes teaching and research with a global perspective as well as programs that allow students and faculty to travel, is more important than ever. This issue reviews different components of successful international programs so that board members and presidents, working through such bodies as the boards academic affairs and student affairs committees, may determine the approach that best suites their own institutions. Any credible effort to put into effect a strategic plans commitment to internationalism should address these components: (1) teaching cross-cultural understanding; (2) promoting foreign language fluency; (3) encouraging faculty to develop international curricula; (4) supporting efforts to bring foreign students and faculty to U.S. campuses; and (5) creating study-abroad programs for Americans. The proliferation of study-abroad providers has made the questions of academic quality and integrity increasingly challenging. Institutions must work to ensure that credits are transferable, that financial aid is available, and that the health and safety of students in study abroad programs are ensured. Some case studies and examples of successful programs illustrate approaches that have worked for institutions with a commitment to international education. Also described is the Community College International Recruitment Initiative of the American Association of Community Colleges. (SLD)
