Discovery of pulsations from a number of ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) sources proved that accretion onto neutron stars can produce luminosities exceeding the Eddington limit by a couple of orders of magnitude. The conditions necessary to achieve such high luminosities as well as the exact geometry of the accretion flow in the neutron star vicinity are, however, a matter of debate. The pulse phase-resolved polarization measurements that became possible with the launch of the IXPE can be used to determine the pulsar geometry and its orientation relative to the orbital plane. They provide an avenue to test different theoretical models of ULX pulsars. In this paper we present the results of three IXPE observations of the first Galactic ULX pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2023 outburst. We find strong variations of the polarization characteristics with the pulsar phase. The average polarization degree increases from about 5% to 15% as the flux dropped by a factor of three in the course of the outburst. The polarization angle (PA) as function of the pulsar phase shows two peaks in the first two observations, but changes to a characteristic sawtooth pattern in the remaining data set. This is not consistent with a simple rotating vector model. Assuming the existence of an additional constant polarized component, we were able to fit the three observations with a common rotating vector model and obtain constraints on the pulsar geometry. In particular, we find the pulsar angular momentum inclination with respect to the line-of-sight of 15-40 deg, the magnetic obliquity of 60-80 deg, and the pulsar spin position angle of -50 deg, which differs from the constant component PA of about 10 deg. Since their first discovery in the late 1960s, Gamma-ray bursts have attracted an exponentially growing interest from the international community due to their central role in the most highly debated open questions of the modern research of astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics. These range from the intimate nuclear composition of high density material within the core of ultra-dense neuron stars, to stellar evolution via the collapse of massive stars, the production and propagation of gravitational waves, as well as the exploration of the early Universe by unveiling first stars and galaxies (assessing also their evolution and cosmic re-ionization). GRBs have stimulated in the past $\sim$50 years the development of cutting-edge technological instruments for observations of high energy celestial sources from space, leading to the launch and successful operations of many different scientific missions (several of them still in data taking mode nowadays). In this review, we provide a brief description of the GRB-dedicated missions from space being designed and developed for the future. The list of these projects, not meant to be exhaustive, shall serve as a reference to interested readers to understand what is likely to come next to lead the further development of GRB research and associated phenomenology., Comment: Accepted for publication on Universe. Understanding a surgical scene is crucial for computer-assisted surgery systems to provide any intelligent assistance functionality. One way of achieving this scene understanding is via scene segmentation, where every pixel of a frame is classified and therefore identifies the visible structures and tissues. Progress on fully segmenting surgical scenes has been made using machine learning. However, such models require large amounts of annotated training data, containing examples of all relevant object classes. Such fully annotated datasets are hard to create, as every pixel in a frame needs to be annotated by medical experts and, therefore, are rarely available. In this work, we propose a method to combine multiple partially annotated datasets, which provide complementary annotations, into one model, enabling better scene segmentation and the use of multiple readily available datasets. Our method aims to combine available data with complementary labels by leveraging mutual exclusive properties to maximize information. Specifically, we propose to use positive annotations of other classes as negative samples and to exclude background pixels of binary annotations, as we cannot tell if they contain a class not annotated but predicted by the model. We evaluate our method by training a DeepLabV3 on the publicly available Dresden Surgical Anatomy Dataset, which provides multiple subsets of binary segmented anatomical structures. Our approach successfully combines 6 classes into one model, increasing the overall Dice Score by 4.4% compared to an ensemble of models trained on the classes individually. By including information on multiple classes, we were able to reduce confusion between stomach and colon by 24%. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of training a model on multiple datasets. From late September 2017 to February 2018, the Be X-ray binary (BeXB) Swift J0243.6+6124 underwent an unprecedently bright giant outburst. The reported X-ray luminosities were so high that the system was classified as an Ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). It was also the first BeXB pulsar showing radio jet emission. The source was not only bright in X-rays and radio, but also in optical and UV wavelenghts. In this paper we aim to understand the origin of the observed optical/UV fluxes simultaneous to the X-ray emission. We studied the optical/UV light curves in comparison with the X-ray fluxes along the outburst, considering the main mechanisms that can explain the optical/UV emission in X-ray binaries. Due to the tight correlation observed between the optical/UV and X-ray light curves, reprocessing of X-rays seems to be the most plausible explanation. We calculated the timescales of the light curves decays and studied the correlation indexes between the optical and X-ray emission. Finally, we built a physical model considering X-ray heating of the surface of the donor star, irradiation of the accretion disk, and emission from a viscously heated accretion disk, in order to reproduce the observed optical/UV SEDs along the outburst. We considered in our model that the Be circumstellar disk was co-planar to the orbit, and then we neglected its irradiation in the current model. As an input of the model, we used as incident X-ray luminosities those calculated from the bolometric X-ray fluxes obtained from the spectral fit of the Swift/XRT and BAT observations. We conclude that reprocessing of X-rays as X-ray heating of the Be star surface and irradiation of the accretion disk are the two main mechanisms that can reproduce the observed optical/UV emission during the 2017-2018 giant outburst of Swift J0243.6+6124., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on 7 December 2023; 16 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Nonlinear optics lies at the heart of classical and quantum light generation. The invention of periodic poling revolutionized nonlinear optics and its commercial applications by enabling robust quasi-phase-matching in crystals such as lithium niobate. However, reaching useful frequency conversion efficiencies requires macroscopic dimensions, limiting further technology development and integration. Here we realize a periodically poled van der Waals semiconductor (3R-MoS$_2$). Due to its exceptional nonlinearity, we achieve macroscopic frequency conversion efficiency over a microscopic thickness of only 1.2${\mu}$m, $10-100\times$ thinner than current systems with similar performances. Due to unique intrinsic cavity effects, the thickness-dependent quasi-phase-matched second harmonic signal surpasses the usual quadratic enhancement by $50\%$. Further, we report the broadband generation of photon pairs at telecom wavelengths via quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This work opens the new and unexplored field of phase-matched nonlinear optics with microscopic van der Waals crystals, unlocking applications that require simple, ultra-compact technologies such as on-chip entangled photon-pair sources for integrated quantum circuitry and sensing.

RX J0440.9+4431 is an accreting X-ray pulsar (XRP) that remained relatively unexplored until recently, when major X-ray outburst activity enabled more in-depth studies. Here, we report on the discovery of ${\sim}0.2$ Hz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from this source observed with $Fermi$-GBM. The appearance of QPOs in RX J0440.9+4431 is thricely transient, that is, QPOs appear only above a certain luminosity, only at certain pulse phases (namely corresponding to the peak of its sine-like pulse profile), and only for a few oscillations at time. We argue that this newly discovered phenomenon (appearance of thricely transient QPOs -- or ATTO) occurs if QPOs are fed through an accretion disk whose inner region viscosity is unstable to mass accretion rate and temperature variations. Such variations are triggered when the source switches to the super-critical accretion regime and the emission pattern changes. During the last decade a number of volume holographic media have been investigated that could serve not only as diffractive optical elements (DOEs) for light but also for slow neutrons. In this contribution we discuss the light optical properties of a stack of two gratings separated by an optically inert slice recorded in a Bayfol HX photopolymer. While the refractive-index modulation of the gratings for light is remarkable, the corresponding neutron optical analogue is, so far, in the medium range of other materials investigated. Models that postulate the existence of hidden sectors address contemporary questions, such as the source of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter. Among the possible mixing processes, neutron-to-hidden-neutron oscillations have been repeatedly tested with ultra-cold neutron storage and passing-through-wall experiments in the range of small ($\delta m<2$ peV) and large mass splitting ($\delta m>10$ neV), respectively. In this work, we present a new constraint in the oscillation parameter space derived from neutron disappearance in ultra-cold neutron beam experiments. The overall limit, which covers the intermediate mass-splitting range, is given by $\tau_{nn'}> 1$ s for $|\delta m| \in [2,69]$ peV (95\% C.L.).

Interatomic potentials provide a means to simulate extended length and time scales that are outside the reach of ab initio calculations. The development of an interatomic potential for a particular material requires the optimization of the parameters of the functional form of the potential. We present a parameterization protocol for analytic bond-order potentials (BOP) that provide a physically transparent and computationally efficient description of the interatomic interaction. The parameterization protocol of the BOP follows the derivation of the BOP along the coarse-graining of the electronic structure from density-functional theory (DFT) to the tight-binding (TB) bond model to analytic BOPs. In particular, it starts from TB parameters that are obtained by downfolding DFT eigenstates of two-atomic molecules to an $sd$-valent minimal basis. This $sd$-valent Hamiltonian is combined with a pairwise repulsion to obtain an initial binding energy relation. The $s$ electrons are then removed from the Hamiltonian and instead represented by an isotropic embedding term. In the final step, the parameters of the remaining $d$-$d$ interaction, the pair repulsion and the embedding term are optimized simultaneously. We demonstrate that the application of this parameterization protocol leads to a basic BOP for Re with good transferability. We discuss different strategies to refine the basic BOP towards global transferability or towards local accuracy. We demonstrate that homogeneous samplings of the structural phase-space in a map of local atomic environments can be used to systematically increase the global transferability. We also demonstrate the influence of training data-weighting on local accuracy refinements with a Pareto-front analysis and suggest further requirements to select a final BOP. The local accuracy and global transferability of the final BOP is also shown and compared to DFT.

Atomic partial charges are crucial parameters in molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, dictating the electrostatic contributions to intermolecular energies, and thereby the potential energy landscape. Traditionally, the assignment of partial charges has relied on surrogates of \textit{ab initio} semiempirical quantum chemical methods such as AM1-BCC, and is expensive for large systems or large numbers of molecules. We propose a hybrid physical / graph neural network-based approximation to the widely popular AM1-BCC charge model that is orders of magnitude faster while maintaining accuracy comparable to differences in AM1-BCC implementations. Our hybrid approach couples a graph neural network to a streamlined charge equilibration approach in order to predict molecule-specific atomic electronegativity and hardness parameters, followed by analytical determination of optimal charge-equilibrated parameters that preserves total molecular charge. This hybrid approach scales linearly with the number of atoms, enabling, for the first time, the use of fully consistent charge models for small molecules and biopolymers for the construction of next-generation self-consistent biomolecular force fields. Implemented in the free and open source package \texttt{espaloma\_charge}, this approach provides drop-in replacements for both AmberTools \texttt{antechamber} and the Open Force Field Toolkit charging workflows, in addition to stand-alone charge generation interfaces. qBounce is using quantum states of ultra-cold neutrons in the gravitational field of the Earth to investigate gravitation in the micrometre range. We present current measurements taken in 2021 at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to determine energy differences of these states by mechanically induced transitions. This allows a determination of the local acceleration $g$ using a quantum measurement. The data presented here results in $g=9.8120(18) m/s^2$. The classical local value at the experiment is $g_c=9.8049 m/s^2$. We present an analysis of systematic effects that induces shifts of the transition frequency of order 100 mHz. The inferred value for $g$ at the experiment shows a systematic shift of $\delta g\approx3.9\sigma$.

The qBounce collaboration built over the last years a new Ramsey-type Gravitational Resonance Spectroscopy (GRS) experiment. After commissioning between 2016 and 2018, the setup was able to measure the Ramsey transitions with GRS for the first time. Here we present a search of the hypothetical charge of the neutron as an application of GRS to study nonstandard model interactions. An important aspect of many botnets is their capability to generate pseudorandom domain names using Domain Generation Algorithms (DGAs). A cyber criminal can register such domains to establish periodically changing rendezvous points with the bots. DGAs make use of seeds to generate sets of domains. Seeds can easily be changed in order to generate entirely new groups of domains while using the same underlying algorithm. While this requires very little manual effort for an adversary, security specialists typically have to manually reverse engineer new malware strains to reconstruct the seeds. Only when the seed and DGA are known, past and future domains can be generated, efficiently attributed, blocked, sinkholed or used for a take-down. Common counters in the literature consist of databases or Machine Learning (ML) based detectors to keep track of past and future domains of known DGAs and to identify DGA-generated domain names, respectively. However, database based approaches can not detect domains generated by new DGAs, and ML approaches can not generate future domain names. In this paper, we introduce SESAME, a system that combines the two above-mentioned approaches and contains a module for automatic Seed Reconstruction, which is, to our knowledge, the first of its kind. It is used to automatically classify domain names, rate their novelty, and determine the seeds of the underlying DGAs. SESAME consists of multiple DGA-specific Seed Reconstructors and is designed to work purely based on domain names, as they are easily obtainable from observing the network traffic. We evaluated our approach on 20.8 gigabytes of DNS-lookups. Thereby, we identified 17 DGAs, of which 4 were entirely new to us., Comment: 12 pages, 3 pages appendix, 13 figures

In this study we present a method to estimate posterior distributions for standard accretion torque model parameters and binary orbital parameters for X-ray binaries using a nested sampling algorithm for Bayesian Parameter Estimation. We study the spin evolution of two Be X-ray binary systems in the Magellanic Clouds, RX J0520.5-6932 and RX J0209-7427, during major outbursts, in which they surpassed the Eddington-limit. Moreover, we apply our method to the recently discovered Swift J0243.6+6124; the only known Galactic pulsating ultra-luminous X-ray source. This is an excellent candidate for studying the disc evolution at super-Eddington accretion rates, for its luminosity span several orders of magnitude during its outburst, with a maximum $L_{\rm X}$ that exceeded the Eddington limit by a factor of $\sim 10$. Our method, when applied to RX J0520.5-6932 and RX J0209-7427, is able to identify the more favourable torque model for each system, while yielding meaningful ranges for the NS and orbital parameters. Our analysis for Swift J0243.6+6124 illustrates that, contrary to the standard torque model predictions, the magnetospheric radius and the Alfv\'en radius are not proportional to each other when surpassing the Eddington limit. Reported distance estimates of this source range between 5 and 7 kpc. Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. Graphene has emerged as a promising platform to bring nonlinear quantum optics to the nanoscale, where a large intrinsic optical nonlinearity enables long-lived and actively tunable plasmon polaritons to strongly interact. Here we theoretically study the collision between two counter-propagating plasmons in a graphene nanoribbon, where transversal subwavelength confinement endows propagating plasmons with %large effective masses a flat band dispersion that enhances their interaction. This scenario presents interesting possibilities towards the implementation of multi-mode polaritonic gates that circumvent limitations imposed by the Shapiro no-go theorem for photonic gates in nonlinear optical fibers. As a paradigmatic example we demonstrate the feasibility of a high fidelity conditional Pi phase shift (CZ), where the gate performance is fundamentally limited only by the single-plasmon lifetime. Oscillations of the neutron into a hidden sector particle are processes predicted in various Standard Model extensions. This extra channel for neutron disappearance has not been tested experimentally in large portions of the oscillation parameter space. Several efforts have been recently made on revising the oscillation time limits at low mass-splitting in ultra-cold neutron (UCN) storage experiments, and at larger mass-splitting in passing-through-wall experiments. In this work, we present the expected sensitivity of an experiment searching for neutron hidden neutron oscillations at intermediate mass-splitting via the application of magnetic fields in the range $B_0=30-1100$ $\mu$T. This experiment was performed at the Institut-Laue-Langevin using a novel UCN counter to monitor the beam flux. Context-aware decision support in the operating room can foster surgical safety and efficiency by leveraging real-time feedback from surgical workflow analysis. Most existing works recognize surgical activities at a coarse-grained level, such as phases, steps or events, leaving out fine-grained interaction details about the surgical activity; yet those are needed for more helpful AI assistance in the operating room. Recognizing surgical actions as triplets of combination delivers comprehensive details about the activities taking place in surgical videos. This paper presents CholecTriplet2021: an endoscopic vision challenge organized at MICCAI 2021 for the recognition of surgical action triplets in laparoscopic videos. The challenge granted private access to the large-scale CholecT50 dataset, which is annotated with action triplet information. In this paper, we present the challenge setup and assessment of the state-of-the-art deep learning methods proposed by the participants during the challenge. A total of 4 baseline methods from the challenge organizers and 19 new deep learning algorithms by competing teams are presented to recognize surgical action triplets directly from surgical videos, achieving mean average precision (mAP) ranging from 4.2% to 38.1%. This study also analyzes the significance of the results obtained by the presented approaches, performs a thorough methodological comparison between them, in-depth result analysis, and proposes a novel ensemble method for enhanced recognition. Our analysis shows that surgical workflow analysis is not yet solved, and also highlights interesting directions for future research on fine-grained surgical activity recognition which is of utmost importance for the development of AI in surgery., Comment: CholecTriplet2021 challenge report. We investigate high-harmonic generation in graphene heterostructures consisting of metallic nanoribbons separated from a graphene sheet by either a few-nanometer layer of aluminum oxide or an atomic monolayer of hexagonal boron nitride. The nanoribbons amplify the near-field at the graphene layer relative to the externally applied pumping, thus allowing us to observe third- and fifth-harmonic generation in the carbon monolayer at modest pump powers in the mid-infrared. We study the dependence of the nonlinear signals on the ribbon width and spacer thickness, as well as pump power and polarization, and demonstrate enhancement factors relative to bare graphene reaching 1600 and 4100 for third- and fifth-harmonic generation, respectively. Our work supports the use of graphene heterostructures to selectively enhance specific nonlinear processes of interest, an essential capability for the design of nanoscale nonlinear devices.

We present a detailed timing study of the pulse profile of Swift J0243.6+6124 with HXMT and Fermi/GBM data during its 2017 giant outburst. The double-peak profile at luminosity above $5\times10^{38}$erg\,s$^{-1}$ is found to be 0.25 phase offset from that below $1.5\times10^{38}$erg\,s$^{-1}$, which strongly supports for a transition from a pencil beam to a fan beam, and thus for the formation of shock dominated accretion column. During the rising stage of the high double-peak regime, the faint peak got saturated in 10-100 keV band above a luminosity of $L_t\sim1.3\times10^{39}$erg\,s$^{-1}$, which is coincident with sudden spectral changes of both the main and faint peaks. They imply a sudden change of emission pattern around $L_t$. The spin-up rate ($\dot{\nu}$) is linearly correlated with luminosity ($L$) below $L_t$, consistent with the prediction of a radiation pressure dominated (RPD) disk. The $\dot{\nu}-L$ relation flattens above $L_t$, indicating a less efficient transfer of angular momentum and a change of accretion disk geometry above $L_t$. It is likely due to irradiation of the disk by the central accretion column and indicates significant radiation feedback before the inner disk radius reaching the spherization radius., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figs, to appear on MNRAS

The study of the properties of the quantum states of bouncing neutrons requires position sensitive detection with micro-metric spatial resolution. The UCNBoX detector relies on Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) coated with a thin boron-10 conversion layer to detect neutron hits. In this paper, we present an original experimental method to determine the spatial resolution of this device using micrometric masks. Gamma-rays, the most energetic photons, carry information from the far reaches of extragalactic space with minimal interaction or loss of information. They bring messages about particle acceleration in environments so extreme they cannot be reproduced on earth for a closer look. Gamma-ray astrophysics is so complementary with collider work that particle physicists and astroparticle physicists are often one in the same. Gamma-ray instruments, especially the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, have been pivotal in major multi-messenger discoveries over the past decade. There is presently a great deal of interest and scientific expertise available to push forward new technologies, to plan and build space- and ground-based gamma-ray facilities, and to build multi-messenger networks with gamma rays at their core. It is therefore concerning that before the community comes together for planning exercises again, much of that infrastructure could be lost to a lack of long-term planning for support of gamma-ray astrophysics. Gamma-rays with energies from the MeV to the EeV band are therefore central to multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies to everything from astroparticle physics with compact objects, to dark matter studies with diffuse large scale structure. These goals and new discoveries have generated a wave of new gamma-ray facility proposals and programs. This paper highlights new and proposed gamma-ray technologies and facilities that have each been designed to address specific needs in the measurement of extreme astrophysical sources that probe some of the most pressing questions in fundamental physics for the next decade. The proposed instrumentation would also address the priorities laid out in the recent Astro2020 Decadal Survey, a complementary study by the astrophysics community that provides opportunities also relevant to Snowmass., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo luminous X-ray outbursts during which the luminosity-dependent spectral and timing features of the neutron star's emission can be analyzed in detail, thus shedding light on the accretion regime at work. We took advantage of a monitoring campaign performed with NuSTAR, Swift/XRT, AstroSat and NICER, to follow the Be/X-ray Binary 2S 1553-542 along one of its rare outbursts and trace its spectral and timing evolution. We report the discovery of a luminosity-dependent cyclotron line energy for the first time in this source. The pulse profiles and pulsed fraction also show variability along the outburst, consistently with the interpretation that the source transitions from the sub-critical to the super-critical accretion regime, separated by a critical luminosity of L$_{crit}\approx4\times10^{37}$ erg/s., Comment: Accepted on ApJ. 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Hypothetical short-range interactions could be detected by measuring the wavefunctions of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) on a mirror bounded by the Earth's gravitational field. The Searches require detectors with higher spatial resolution. We are developing a UCN detector for the with a high spatial resolution, which consists of a Si substrate, a thin converter layer including $^{10}$B$_{4}$C, and a layer of fine-grained nuclear emulsion. Its resolution was estimated to be less than 100 nm by fitting tracks of either $^{7}$Li nuclei or $\alpha$-particles, which were created when neutrons interacted with the $^{10}$B$_{4}$C layer. For actual measurements of the spatial distributions, the following two improvements were made: The first was to establish a method to align microscopic images with high accuracy within a wide region of 65 mm $\times$ 0.2 mm. We created reference marks of 1 $\mu$m and 5 $\mu$m diameter with an interval of 50 $\mu$m and 500 $\mu$m, respectively, on the Si substrate by electron beam lithography and realized a position accuracy of less than 30 nm. The second was to build a holder that could maintain the atmospheric pressure around the nuclear emulsion to utilize it under vacuum during exposure to UCNs. The intrinsic resolution of the improved detector was estimated by evaluating the blur of a transmission image of a gadolinium grating taken by cold neutrons as better than 0.56 $\pm$ 0.08 $\mu$m, which included the grating accuracy. A test exposure to UCNs was conducted to obtain the spatial distribution of UCNs in the Earth's gravitational field. Although the test was successful, a blurring of 6.9 $\mu$m was found in the measurements, compared with a theoretical curve. We identified the blurring caused by the refraction of UCNs due to the roughness of the upstream surface of the substrate. Polishing of the surface makes the resolution less than 100 nm.

Interference between two waves is a well-known concept in physics, and its generalization to more than two waves is straight-forward. The order of interference is defined as the number of paths that interfere in a manner that cannot be reduced to patterns of a lower order. In practice, second-order interference means that in, say, a triple-slit experiment, the interference pattern when all three slits are open can be predicted from the interference patterns between all possible pairs of slits. Quantum mechanics is often said to only exhibit second-order interference. However, this is only true under specific assumptions, typically single-particles undergoing linear evolution. Here we experimentally show that nonlinear evolution can in fact lead to higher-order interference. The higher-order interference in our experiment has a simple quantum mechanical description; namely, optical coherent states interacting in a nonlinear medium. OAO 1657-415 is an atypical supergiant X-ray binary among wind-fed and disk-fed systems, showing alternate spin-up/spin-down intervals lasting on the order of tens of days. We study different torque states of OAO 1657-415 based on the spin history monitored by {\it Fermi}/GBM, together with fluxes from {\it Swift}/BAT and {\it MAXI}/GSC. Its spin frequency derivatives are well correlated with {\it Swift}/BAT fluxes during rapid spin-up episodes, anti-correlated with {\it Swift}/BAT fluxes during rapid spin-down episodes, and not correlated in between. The orbital profile of spin-down episodes is reduced by a factor of 2 around orbital phases of 0.2 and 0.8 compared to that of spin-up episodes. The orbital hardness ratio profile of spin-down episodes is also lower than that of spin-up episodes around phases close to the mid-eclipse, implying that there is more material between the neutron star and the observer for spin-down episodes than for spin-up episodes around these phases. These results indicate that the torque state of the neutron star is connected with the material flow on orbital scale and support the retrograde/prograde disk accretion scenario for spin-down/spin-up torque reversal., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The time evolution of a quantum wave packet in the linear gravity potential is known as Quantum Bouncing Ball. The qBounce collaboration recently observed such a system by dropping wave packets of ultracold neutrons by a height of roughly 30 microns. In this article, space and momentum spectra as well as Wigner functions of the neutron wave functions in the gravitational field of the Earth are analyzed. We investigate the quantum states in the "preparation region", into which they transition after exiting a narrow double-mirror system and where we would expect to observe free fall and bounces in classical physics. For this, we start from the stationary solutions and eigenvalues of the Schr\"odinger equation in terms of Airy functions and their zeros. Subsequently, we examine space and momentum distributions as well as Wigner functions in phase space for pure and mixed quantum states. The eventual influence of Yukawa-like forces for small distances of several micrometers from the mirror is included through first order perturbation calculations. Those allow us to study the resulting modifications of space and momentum distributions, and phase space functions., Comment: 24 pages, 43 figures
