Background: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been shown to provide non-invasive diagnosis of common skin neoplasms, especially basal cell carcinoma. OCT produces a cross-sectional view of the tissue, similar to a traditionally sectioned histopathological view, but the resolution of conventional OCT is low and thus limits clinical application. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the application ability of a full-field (FF)OCT system which was newly developed to scan the skin at the cellular level. Methods: Patients with skin tumours or inflammatory lesions warranting biopsy were consecutively enrolled. All lesions underwent clinical, dermoscopic, and OCT assessment, followed by routine biopsy. The adjacent normal skin was scanned for comparison. OCT images were interpreted (blinded to the biopsy results) and then compared with the histopathological diagnosis. Results: A total of 111 patients with 115 lesions completed the protocol, including 80 skin tumours, 28 inflammatory diseases, and 7 other diseases. Of the OCT images, 43.5% were of good quality and show expected features. Identifiable features of actinic keratosis, Bowen’s disease, basal cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget’s disease, seborrheic keratosis, large cell acanthoma, bullous pemphigoid, interface dermatitis, lichenoid tissue reaction, and psoriasis were demonstrated. Lesions are located deeply, and so some features were out of the field of view, accounting for 40.0% (46/115). Conclusions: This study expanded the ability of FFOCT for the clinical diagnosis of various skin conditions. This new optical technique can clearly visualise skin lesions located in the epidermis and upper dermis. It provided an effective way to perform digital skin biopsy in superficial skin diseases.

This study presents a measurement method for a bike frame to solve a problem that usually relies on the digimatic callipers or mechanical molds handled by a human, therefore avoiding a long time process and measurement errors. In such a mechanism, the measured data is based on the handwritten record, and thus a difficulty may occur in further data analysis using the computer. For this reason, this study aims to develop a mathematical model of three-dimensional geometry especially applied for robotic arm-based bike frame measurement. The proposed mathematical geometric model effectively integrates the sphere formula with the inner product of normal vector to find four parameters in the sphere formula using only three measured points. Accordingly, the centre coordinate of the check point and its diameter can be calculated accurately and simply. The practical model performance also prooves that all crucial quality checking items such as centre plane offset, inside diameter, axis point and parallelism in different rotating shafts of bike frame can be achieved in term of rapid, robustness and precision. Moreover, the measurement accuracy in the estimated standard deviation and measurement uncertainty using two different bike frames is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) enables the embedding of Virtualized Network Function (VNF) into commodity servers. A sequence of VNFs can be chained in a particular order to form a service chain (SC). This paper considers placing multiple SCs in a geo-distributed edge system owned by multiple service providers (SPs). For a pair of SC and SP, minimizing the placement cost while meeting a latency constraint is formulated as an integer programming problem. As SC clients and SPs are self-interested, we study the matching between SCs and SPs that respects individual's interests yet maximizes social welfare. The proposed matching approach excludes any blocking individual and block pair which may jeopardize the stability of the result. Simulation results show that the proposed approach performs well in terms of social welfare but is suboptimal concerning the number of placed SCs.

Background Studies have reported the application of conventional optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The new OCT provides cellular details similar to those in pathology slides and may reduce user learning time. This study aimed to demonstrate the quality of ex vivo full-field cellular-resolution OCT images and compare the diagnostic accuracy between physicians with varying pathology experience. Materials and methods Sixty histologically confirmed BCCs were selected. Tissue samples were sectioned and scanned using OCT, and their features were compared with those of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained sections. Thirty images were selected for the test administered to dermatology residents, dermatopathology fellows, and board-certified general pathologists without any OCT experience. The pretest learning included a 3-min instruction and 10-min self-study of four BCC variants. Results Histopathological BCC and normal histological features were clearly recognizable on the OCT images. The pathological BCC features observed in the OCT images correlated with those found in the H&E-stained sections. Seven participants completed the test. The correct answer rates of the residents, fellows, and pathologists were 71%, 68%, and 83% for BCC and 44%, 57%, and 57% for the BCC subtypes, respectively. Conclusion All the participants identified BCC in >70% cases with a learning time of only 13 minutes. The results indicated that cellular-resolution OCT provided high-quality images similar to the conventional pathology slides. Pathology experience did reflect the diagnostic accuracy. However, a longer training time is still needed at all levels to recognize the BCC subtypes correctly.

UVB can induce inflammatory responses contributing to diverse skin damage. UVB-triggered inflammasome activation of human keratinocytes underlies UVB-induced skin sunburn reaction. Pleiotropic functions of spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) have rendered it as a potential therapeutic target. In immunocytes, Syk modulates immunoreceptor signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In skin, Syk mediates EGFR signaling, regulates keratinocyte differentiation and is involved in inflammatory disorders. However, roles of Syk in UVB-induced inflammasome activation in keratinocytes remain elusive. We investigated roles of keratinocyte Syk in UVB-triggered photo-responses. Primary normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) isolated from skin were used. Syk knockdown or Syk inhibitor R406 was applied to investigate functions of keratinocyte Syk in UVB photobiology. The possible in vivo role of Syk was evaluated by checking UVB-induced skin damage in R406-treated mice. UVB was able to induce Syk phosphorylation in NHEKs that could be regulated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and EGFR. Syk knockdown or Syk inhibitor (R406) treatment reduced UVB-triggered apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase-recruitment domain (ASC) crosslinking, procaspase-1 cleavage, active IL-1β formation, and gasdermin D activation, indicating roles of Syk in UVB-triggered inflammasome activation in keratinocytes. UVB-induced production of IL-8, TNF-α, ROS, and phosphorylation of JNK and p38 were attenuated after Syk knockdown or inhibition. R406 ameliorated UVB-induced mouse skin damage, including erythema and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Thus, Syk participated in UVB-induced inflammasome activation and inflammatory response in vitro and in vivo, suggesting potential photo-protective effects of Syk inhibition in UVB-induced skin inflammation.

We report on the photodetection properties of a graphene-oxide-semiconductor (GOS) diode by measuring its current-voltage characteristics under illumination with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). We demonstrate that a GOS structure, with graphene used as a transparent gate electrode to form an inversion layer at the oxide-semiconductor interface, can function as a GOS field-effect transistor operable at low temperatures down to 1.5 K. By investigating the gate tunneling current in a GOS diode with a transistor structure, we find that the dark current is below approximately 0.1 nA at $T=150$ K, which is almost two orders of magnitude lower than that in a graphene-semiconductor (GS) Schottky-diode photodetector. Notably, the GOS diode shows a bilateral photoresponse in both forward- and reverse-bias regimes under LED illumination. The photocurrent responsivity $R$ reaches approximately 100 mA/W at $T=150$ K with a low bias voltage of approximately $\ensuremath{-}0.6$ V, which is one order of magnitude lower than that applied in a GS Schottky-diode photodetector. We propose that a GOS heterostructure can be made to behave as a $p$-$i$-$n$ or an $n$-$i$-$p$ diode by manipulating the polarity of the bias voltage applied to the graphene gate. In addition, we quantitatively simulate the key features of the dark current by taking into account the associated bipolar current in graphene along with band-to-trap tunneling and trap-assisted tunneling processes. Our theoretical model sheds light on the mechanism of the bilateral photoresponse of the GOS photodetector. Our work paves the way to engineering hybrid devices made of two-dimensional materials and conventional semiconductors with CMOS integrability.

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) decreases postoperative complications of various surgeries. However, the use of NPWT for oncological surgical wounds remains controversial. To evaluate the association of NPWT with oncologic recurrence in surgical wounds without residual malignancy, we analysed studies that compared NPWT with conventional non-pressure dressings for cancer surgical wounds without residual tumour by August 12, 2020. We compared tumour recurrence rates and postoperative complications between the two procedures. The six studies included 118 patients who received NPWT, and 149 patients who received conventional non-pressure wound care. The overall quality of the included studies was high based on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale score of 7.5. Tumour recurrence after NPWT was not significantly different compared with conventional non-negative pressure wound care (9.3% versus 11.4%, P = 0.40). There was no significant heterogeneity between the studies (I2 = 3%). Although NTWT was associated with a lower complication rate compared with the control group, the result was non-significant (P = 0.15). Application of NPWT in oncologic resection wounds without residual malignancy revealed no difference in local recurrence and may reduce the risk of postoperative complications compared with conventional non-negative pressure dressings. NPWT can be considered an alternative method for reconstruction in challenging cases.

Uremic pruritus is common among patients with advanced or end-stage renal disease, with an incidence of &gt, 40% among patients on dialysis. Uremic clearance granules (UCGs) are effective in managing uremic pruritus and delay the progression of chronic kidney disease. We conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of UCG in patients with uremic pruritus. Several electronic databases were searched systematically from their inceptions until 19 July 2021. Randomized control trials evaluating the efficacy of UCG in patients with uremic pruritus were selected. Eleven trials including 894 participants were published between 2011 and 2021. Patients administered UCGs had a significantly decreased visual analog scale score (mean difference [MD], −2.02, 95% confidence interval [CI], −2.17 to −1.88), serum levels of hsCRP (MD, −2.07 mg/dL, 95% CI, −2.89 to −1.25, p &lt, 0.00001), TNF-α (MD, −15.23 mg/L, 95% CI, −20.00 to −10.47, 0.00001]), β2-MG (MD, −10.18 mg/L, 95% CI, −15.43 to −4.93, 0.00001), and IL-6 (MD, −6.13 mg/L, 95% CI, −7.42 to −4.84, 0.00001). In addition, UCGs significantly reduced serum levels of creatinine, BUN, PTH, iPTH, phosphorus, and the overall effectiveness rate. UCGs could be an attractive complementary therapy for patients with uremic pruritus.

Background Infective endocarditis (IE) is uncommon in childhood. Its associated epidemiological characteristics in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) remain unclear. Methods The study population included children born in Taiwan during the years 1997 to 2005 who were diagnosed as having CHD before 3years of age. All children were followed up until the end year of 2010, the diagnosis of infective endocarditis, or death. The demographic characteristics of patients with and without IE, the invasive procedures performed during 6months before the index date, the prophylactic antibiotics related to dental procedures, and in-hospital mortality were collected. Results Information of 24,729 children with CHD were retrieved for our analysis and 237 patients with newly diagnosed IE were identified. The incidence rate of IE in all CHD lesions was 11.13 per 10,000person-years. Taking ASD for reference, the following CHD lesions were at risk for IE: cyanotic CHD (adjusted OR, 9.58; 95% confidence interval, 5.38–17.05), endocardial cushion defect (ECD) (8.01; 2.73–23.50), Left-sided lesions (4.36; 1.90–10.01) and VSD (2.93; 1.64–5.23). Patients who underwent procedures have a higher risk of acquiring IE which include central venous catheter (CVC) insertion (3.17; 2.36–4.27), cardiac catheterization (3.74; 2.67–5.22), open-heart surgery (2.47; 1.61–3.77), valve surgery (3.20; 1.70–6.02), and shunt surgery (7.43; 2.36–23.41). However, dental procedures did not increase the risk of IE, irrespective of antibiotic usage. Conclusions The risk of IE varies markedly among CHD lesions in our study. Invasive heart procedures but not dental procedures, are more significantly associated with IE among children with CHD.

We included COPD patients who used inhalation steroid and beta-blockers between 1998 and 2010. From this cohort, there were 16,067 patients with severe exacerbations included in the analysis and 55,970 controls matched on age, sex, COPD diagnosis year, and beta-blockers treatment duration by risk set sampling.Results: For the selective beta-blocker users, the current users had a lower risk of severe exacerbations than the nonusers (odds ratio [OR], 0.90; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85–0.96). In contrast, for the nonselective beta-blocker users, the current users had a higher risk of severe acute exacerbations than the nonusers (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.14–1.27). A higher risk of severe exacerbation during increasing mean daily dose or within about the initial 300days was found in nonselective beta-blockers, but not in selective beta-blockers. One selective beta-blocker, betaxolol, had a significantly lower risk of severe exacerbations (OR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.60–0.95). Two nonselective beta-blockers (labetalol and propranolol) were associated with a significantly higher risk of exacerbations (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.32–1.67 for labetalol; OR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.10–1.23 for propranolol).Conclusion: Selective beta-blockers can be cautiously prescribed for patients with COPD and cardiovascular disease (CVD), however, nonselective beta-blockers should not be prescribed for patients with COPD. Betaxolol may be the preferred choice of suitable selective beta-blocker for patients with COPD, however, labetalol and propranolol should be avoided for patients with COPD. Currently, the bike frame quality check (QC) mostly relies on human operation in industry. However, some drawbacks such as it being time-consuming, having low accuracy and involving non-computerized processes are still unavoidable. Apart from these problems,measured data are difficult to systematically analyze for tracking sources of product defects in the production process. For this reason, this paper aims to develop a 3D geometry mathematical model suitable for bicycle frames QC using robotic arm-based measurement. Unlike the traditional way to find coefficients of a space sphere, the proposed model requires only three check point coordinates to achieve the sphere axis coordinate and its radius. In the practical work, the contact sensor combined with the robotic arm is used to realize the compliance items measurement in shaft length, internal diameter, verticality, parallelism, etc. The proposed model is validated based on both mathematic verification and actual bike frame check.

Background Galectin-3 is widely expressed in many immunocytes and epithelial cells including skin keratinocytes. Galectin-3 can regulate immunological or inflammatory processes and plays a proinflammatory role in some disease models. Galectin-3 has a role in disorders related to ultraviolet (UV) photodamage such as apoptosis, skin squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. However, the evidence of galectin-3 in UVB-induced skin inflammation is still limited and the underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive. Objective We aimed to investigate the effects of galectin-3 in human epidermal keratinocytes and in mice after UVB irradiation. Methods Primary human epidermal keratinocytes with galectin-3 knockdown were used as the in vitro model. ELISA, QPCR, and western blotting were applied to evaluate the released cytokine, mRNA and protein expression. Histologic analysis, measurement of erythema and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were applied to evaluate UVB-induced skin damage in galectin-3 knockout mice. Results In UVB-irradiated human keratinocytes, galectin-3 knockdown downregulated the UVB-induced ASC crosslinking, cleavage of caspase-1, and formation of active IL-1β. Galectin-3 knockdown also decreased UVB-induced production of reactive oxygen species, p38 phosphorylation, and COX2 expression in human keratinocytes. After four days of UVB irradiation, galectin-3 knockout mice showed reduced gross erythema, histologic features of tissue inflammation, quantified levels of erythema and TEWL compared to wild type mice. The skin tissue lysate also showed less expression of active IL-1β and COX2 in galectin-3 knockout mice. Conclusion Galectin-3 may play a positive regulatory role in UVB-induced skin inflammation.

Obesity is associated with metabolic endotoxemia, reactive oxygen species (ROS), chronic inflammation, and obese kidney fibrosis. Although the fat&ndash, intestine&ndash, kidney axis has been documented, the pathomechanism and therapeutic targets of obese kidney fibrosis remain unelucidated. To mimic obese humans with metabolic endotoxemia, high-fat-diet-fed mice (HF group) were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to yield the obese kidney fibrosis&ndash, metabolic endotoxemia mouse model (HL group). Therapeutic effects of ROS, cytosolic phospholipases A2 (cPLA2) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors were analyzed with a quantitative comparison of immunohistochemistry stains and morphometric approach in the tubulointerstitium of different groups. Compared with basal and HF groups, the HL group exhibited the most prominent obese kidney fibrosis, tubular epithelial lipid vacuoles, and lymphocyte infiltration in the tubulointerstitium. Furthermore, inhibitors of nonspecific ROS, cPLA2 and COX-2 ameliorated the above renal damages. Notably, the ROS-inhibitor-treated group ameliorated not only oxidative injury but also the expression of cPLA2 and COX-2, indicating that ROS functions as the upstream signaling molecule in the inflammatory cascade of obese kidney fibrosis. ROS acts as a key messenger in the signaling transduction of obese kidney fibrosis, activating downstream cPLA2 and COX-2. The given antioxidant treatment ameliorates obese kidney fibrosis resulting from a combined high-fat diet and LPS&mdash, ROS could serve as a potential therapeutic target of obese kidney fibrosis with metabolic endotoxemia.

Background Aeroallergen sensitization may predict higher fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels. Objective We evaluate cut-off values of FeNO in asthmatic children with and without positive specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) to at least one of 5 aeroallergens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, cat, dog, and cockroach). Methods 564 patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) aged 5 to 18 years were enrolled into two groups. Sensitized group included 378 children with positive IgE to at least one of 5 inhaled allergens. Non-sensitized group included 186 children. Pulmonary function tests, FeNO, eosinophil counts, and IgE levels were examined. Patients were divided into preschool age (5~6 years old), elementary school children (7~11 years old) and adolescents (12~18 years old). Results In preschool children, FeNO≥15.5 ppb differentiates between non-sensitized and sensitized groups. (sensitivity 54.3%; specificity 87.5%; positive predictive value (PPV) 86.2%; negative predictive value (NPV) 57.1%; area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) 0.72) Among elementary school children, the cut-off value of FeNO≥19.5 ppb showed sensitivity 66.4%; specificity 85.8%; PPV 90.5%; NPV 55.7%; AUC 0.81. In adolescents, FeNO≥27.5 ppb showed sensitivity 60.2%; specificity 85.4%; PPV 91.2%; NPV 46.1%; AUC 0.76. Conclusion In asthmatic children, aeroallergen sensitization appears to contribute to higher FeNO levels than those not sensitized. Cut-off values of FeNO which well discriminate asthmatic children with and without aeroallergen sensitization should be chose according to different ages.

This study fabricates amine (NH(2))-functionalized graphene oxide (GO)/polyimide(PI) composite films with high performance using in situ polymerization. Linear poly(oxyalkylene)amines with two different molecular weights 400 and 2000 (D400 and D2000) have been grafted onto the GO surfaces, forming two types of NH(2)-functionalized GO (D400-GO/D2000-GO). NH(2)-functionalized GO, especially D400-GO, demonstrated better reinforcing efficiency in mechanical and thermal properties. The observed property enhancement are due to large aspect ratio of GO sheets, the uniform dispersion of the GO within the PI matrix, and strong interfacial adhesion due to the chemical bonding between GO and the polymeric matrix. The Young's modulus of the composite films with 0.3 wt % D400-GO loading is 7.4 times greater than that of neat PI, and tensile strength is 240% higher than that of neat PI. Compared to neat PI, 0.3 wt % D400-GO/PI film exhibits approximately 23.96 °C increase in glass transition temperature (T(g)). The coefficient of thermal expansion below T(g) is significantly decreased from 102.6 μm/°C (neat PI) to 53.81 μm/°C (decreasing 48%) for the D400-GO/PI composites with low D400-GO content (0.1 wt %). This work not only provides a method to develop the GO-based polyimide composites with superior performances but also conceptually provides a chance to modulate the interfacial interaction between GO and the polymer through designing the chain length of grafting molecules on NH(2)-functionalized GO.

OBJECTIVE: Most of the existing findings on the association between diabetes mellitus and colorectal cancer were generated from studies in Western societies. However, significant differences in cancer incidence and cancer-prone lifestyles are apparent between Asian and Western countries. This study aims to estimate the risks of colorectal cancer in the diabetic population in Taiwan by conducting a large-scale, controlled cohort study. METHODS: From Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 (LHID2005), a total of 37 001 diabetic patients were identified. We also obtained data for four controls per patient, matched for sex, age and year of first entry into the LHID2005. All patients were followed up from the date of entry into the LHID2005 until they developed colorectal cancer or to the end of 2006, whichever was earlier. We used Cox's regression models to assess the risk of developing colorectal cancer, with adjustment for sex, age, comorbid disorders, and socioeconomic characteristics. RESULTS: We identified 37 001 diabetic patients and 148 004 controls. The adjusted hazard ratio for colorectal cancer in diabetes mellitus patients was 2.1 (95% confidence interval, 1.82-2.42) compared with controls. The risk was significant to both men and women. The adjusted hazard ratios for colorectal cancer were 2.03 (95% confidence interval, 1.68-2.47) in male diabetes mellitus patients and 2.17 (95% confidence interval, 1.77-2.67) in female diabetes mellitus patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings based on a large population-based cohort study provide evidence that diabetes mellitus may increase the risk of colorectal cancer in Asians.

Summary Background Septic acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in intensive care units (ICU), it and portends a higher risk of morbidity and death than nonseptic AKI. However, its outcome and prognostic factors among elderly postoperative patients remain unknown. We aimed to determine the risk factors and predictors of mortality among postoperative elderly patients (≥ 65 years) with septic AKI requiring acute dialysis. Methods The study protocol was based on that of a clinical cohort study of renal failure patients in the database of the National Taiwan University Surgical ICU Acute Renal Failure (NSARF) Study Group. From January 2002 to July 2009, patients (aged > 18 years) with postoperative AKI requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) were recruited for this study. Each case of septic AKI before operation was identified and patients with end-stage renal disease were excluded. Results A total of 292 postoperative patients with septic AKI requiring dialysis were identified during the study period. The mean (SD) age was 65.9 (11.9) years and 68.2% were men. Abdominal surgery was the most common type of surgery (42.8%), followed by cardiovascular (28.8%) and chest surgery (15.4%). The most common indications for RRT in this study cohort were azotemia in 223 patients (76.4%) and fluid overload in 62 patients (21.2%); 92 (31.5%) patients had one indication, 170 (58.2%) had two indications, and 30 (10.3%) had more than three indications. The elderly patients (those ≥ 65 years) had anemia, underwent abdominal surgery, and received dialysis for fluid overload more frequently than the young adults. By contrast, the young adults were more likely to present with shock requiring vasopressor use and have abnormal liver functions. In the elderly subgroup, the outcome was found to be associated with mechanical ventilator use, but not with disease severity, comorbidities, types of surgery and the indication for dialysis. Conclusions The hospital mortality of postoperative elderly patients with septic AKI was more than 60% and was not affected by age. Mechanical ventilator use was the major risk factor and prognostic factor for elderly patients in this clinical setting.

Background/Purpose Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at particular risk for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, especially via nasal colonization of MRSA. Surveillance cultures are recommended to identify patients colonized by MRSA. Methods Clinical data and screening cultures of S. aureus from the anterior nares of 541 patients on long-term dialysis in the hospitals were performed in March 2007. The follow-up survey was conducted 1 year later. Results A total of 32 (5.9%) of the 541 patients were positive nasal cultures for MRSA, while 89 (16.5%) were positive for methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA). In a multivariate analysis, risk factors for ESRD patients with MRSA colonization included congestive heart failure, nursing home admission, and nasogastric tube feeding in the last 3 months. Follow-up of the 32 MRSA colonized patients showed that one (3.1%) died due to MSSA and three (9.3%) died due from MRSA infection. Conclusions We found that patients with ESRD and MRSA nasal colonization were associated with a history of congestive heart failure, nursing home admission, and nasogastric tube feeding in the last 3 months.

This study used sodium borohydride to reduce graphene oxide to graphene nanosheets (GNS), which contain the carboxylic functional group that becomes carboxyl (–COOH) or carboxylate anion (–COO−)-type in the acid or alkaline environment, respectively. The GNS with didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) particles becomes hydrophilic (A-GNS) or hydrophobic (B-GNS) in property, through control of the pH value, which can be dispersed efficiently in water or a water/THF medium to deposit on the hydrophilic (poly(acrylic acid-acryl amide)) or hydrophobic (polystyrene) substrate for preparing the transparent, conductive film (TCF) by spin coating. The DDAB particles can be removed by washing with nitric acid, and the optimal performances of the TCFs are then obtained (HA-GNS and HB-GNS). The surface electrical resistance of HA-GNS (1.5 × 103 Ω □−1 at transmittance of 82%) is similar to that of HB-GNS (2.1 × 103 Ω □−1 at transmittance of 81%), which demonstrated that, not only the hydrophilic, but also the hydrophobic surface can be chosen to prepare the TCF when the hydrophilic and hydrophobic GNS can be prepared.

We conducted this study to investigate whether subjects with high-normal systolic blood pressure (SBP) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and/or diabetes compared to subjects with low-normal SBP, using metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a risk factor for future CVD/diabetes.The study included 6133 apparently healthy Taiwanese men aged 40-65 years. All subjects were normotensive, and none took medication for any abnormal MetS component. To avoid the effect of age on blood pressure, we stratified patients first by age then by SBP (that is, low, middle, and high SBP). We pooled all the low, middle, and high SBP groups from the different age strata to create 3 larger groups (Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, respectively). The MetS components in subjects with the lowest SBP (Group 1) were compared with those in the other 2 groups. All of the MetS components, except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), were significantly lower in Group 1. Thus, it was not surprising that Group 2 and Group 3 had significantly higher odds ratios for abnormal body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides than Group 1 (but not for HDL-C). Specifically, Group 3 had a 1.7-fold higher odds ratio (p < 0.001) for having MetS than Group 1. Age, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, LDL-C, and log triglycerides correlated significantly with SBP. In multivariate linear regression analysis, we found that only body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, and log triglycerides remained significantly related to SBP. Among them, body mass index had the highest β value.In conclusion, the level of SBP was highly correlated with body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, and triglycerides in subjects with normotension. Although there is not a cause-and-effect relationship, the risk of CVD and diabetes was significantly associated with an elevation of SBP, even when the SBP remained within the normal range. Further studies are needed to determine whether normotensive subjects would benefit from medical management.

Background: Elevated alanine aminotransferase (e-ALT) and abnormal liver echogenicity (ab-echo), as determined by sonography, have been linked to metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, which of these is more closely related to MetS, especially among older men, remains unknown. Methods: Data from 3065 men aged 65 years or older who were undergoing a routine health examination and who were not taking any medications for MetS were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into 4 groups: group N (n = 1228; patients have normal ALT and liver echogenicity); group A (n = 110; patients have e-ALT but normal liver echogenicity); group E (n = 1381; patients have ab-echo but normal ALT); group AE (n = 346; patients have both e-ALT and ab-echo). Results: Among the 3065 subjects, 714 participants were found to have MetS (23.3%). It is not surprising that MetS components were highest in group AE. More interestingly, compared with group A, group E had higher levels of MetS components (except that high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower). Similar findings were confirmed by logistic regression. Group E had a significantly higher odds ratio of having MetS than group A (2.73; 95% CI, 1.565–4.763). Conclusions: Our data confirm that both e-ALT and ab-echo are related to a higher incidence of MetS among Taiwanese older men. Of these 2 abnormalities, ab-echo seems to be more closely related to MetS. Further studies are needed to elucidate the complex relationships between these factors in other age and ethnic groups.

Aggregation and restacking of graphene nanosheets (GNS) can be efficiently inhibited by decorating the silver nanoparticles on the surface of GNS to form GNS/silver (GNS-Ag) composites, which can construct high transparent and electrically conductive thin films. Silver nanoparticles act as a useful nanospacer and conductor, which not only increase the interlayer distance but also improve the electrical conductivity between layers. A two-step reduction process using sodium borohydride and ethylene glycol was also demonstrated reducing graphene oxide to GNS efficiently. The GNS-Ag composite films showed a maximum sheet resistance of 93 Ω□ −1 , while maintaining up to 78% light transmittance, which was two order of magnitude lower than that of GNS (8.2 × 10 3 Ω□ −1 , 81%), and the value of DC conductivity to optical conductivity ratio was 13.5 instead of 0.25.

Stacking of individual graphene sheets (GS) is effectively inhibited by introducing one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to form a 3-D hierarchical structure which significantly enhances the electrochemical capacitive performances of GS-based composites. From SEM images, inserting proper quantity of CNTs as nanospacers can effectively impede the stacking of GS and enlarge the space between GS sheets, leading to obtain a highly porous nanostructure. The specific capacitance of GS-CNTs-9-1 (∼326.5 F g−1 at 20 mV s−1) is much higher than that of GS material (∼83 F g−1). Furthermore, the energy and power densities of GS-CNTs-9-1 are respectively as high as 21.74 Wh kg−1 and 78.29 kW kg−1, revealing that the hierarchical graphene-CNT architecture provides remarkable effects on enhancing the capacitive performance of GS-based composites. Therefore, the GS-CNT composites are promising carbon materials for supercapacitors.

Invasive plants had raised lots of concern about the environment and biodiversity. Many members of Asteraceae are notorious invasive alien species across the world. In Taiwan, Emilia (Asteraceae) contains one native and two naturalized species. Recently, we found some morphologically intermediate individuals between the native E. sonchifolia var. javanica and the alien E. praetermissa from northern Taiwan where the latter two grow sympatrically. Based on morphological comparisons, pollen viability and flow cytometry information, we confirmed the fact of natural hybridization. Herein, we describe a new hybrid Emilia ×latens J.-Y Wang & J.-C. Wang and provide a key to Emilia species in Taiwan.

Background/Purpose Aggregatibacter ( Actinobacillus ) actinomycetemcomitans , part of the normal flora of the mouth, is frequently found in human periodontal cultures and is an important pathogen causing various invasive infections, particularly infective endocarditis. In this study, we describe the clinical course and outcome of patients with A. actinomycetemcomitans infection. Methods All patients suffering invasive A. actinomycetemcomitans infections at the National Taiwan University Hospital from January 1985 to December 2004 were included in this study. Relevant data regarding clinical presentation, antimicrobial treatment and outcome of these patients were analyzed. Results During the study period, there were 11 patients with invasive A. actinomycetemcomitans infections, including eight patients with infective endocarditis, one with osteonecrosis and two with pneumonia and chest wall lesions. Among the patients with infective endocarditis, four had prosthetic valve replacement, four suffered from rheumatic heart disease and one had undergone surgical repair of ventricular septal defect. Lesions in the oral cavity were the probable portals of entry of the microorganism, and included carious teeth, periodontitis or radiotherapy of the ear-nose-throat field, and were noted in nine patients. Transthoracic echocardiography and/or transesophageal echocardiography were performed on the patients with probable infective endocarditis but growth was demonstrated in only four of these patients. Blood culture yielded A. actinomycetemcomitans after prolonged incubation. Three isolates were resistant to penicillin and two of these were also resistant to ampicillin. Conclusion The diagnosis of invasive A. actinomycetemcomitans infection was delayed due to the indolent clinical course, non-specific presentation and slow growth of the organism. Antibiotic therapy using amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, ceftriaxone, clindamycin, cefotaxime, or levofloxacin was successful in all patients. None of the patients demonstrated recurrence of infection 2-36 months following treatment.
