20. Exploring Title IX Sexual Misconduct Policies in Higher Education: An Examination into the Breadth and Depth of Policies' Content

Abstract

Schools are required to have written policies regarding the handling of sexual misconduct cases, but little research has examined the content of these policies. This study explored the content of Title IX sexual misconduct policies for 200 universities in the U.S. specifically assessing if the content is in line with the Title IX regulations set forth by the Trump administration. The results revealed that there were certain areas of high transparency, where the policies inform the students in-depth about their Title IX sexual misconduct procedure (e.g. confidentiality, how and where to report, standard of proof). However, there were notable gaps where the policies require further details in order to fully inform their stakeholders (e.g. cross-examination, rape shield provisions). Given the importance of having a comprehensive Title IX policy, future research and recommendations for improving schools' Title IX policies are discussed.

42. Mindfulness, and Specifically Compassion, Buffers the Relationship between Hopelessness and Suicide Ideation in College Students

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the role of mindfulness in suicide ideation (SI) in college students by testing which component(s) of mindfulness would add to the explanation of SI when depression, hopelessness and suicide attempt history were considered. Seven hundred sixty-three undergraduate college students provided survey data on well-established measures of the constructs of interest. Regressions were used to test associations between SI, attentional control and compassion and whether attentional control or compassion buffered relationships between depression, hopelessness and SI. In this sample, neither component of mindfulness was related to SI. However, the relationship between hopelessness and SI in college students was buffered by compassion, such that those students with greater compassion evidenced no relationship between hopelessness and SI. Findings from this study suggest compassion may warrant targeting to reduce SI among college students, particularly among those who are hopeless.

43. Factors Precipitating Suicide Attempts Vary across Race

Abstract

Objective: Although research has identified interpersonal, intrapersonal, and achievement-related factors that precipitate suicide attempts (SAs), how these factors vary by race/ethnicity is unknown. We examined racial/ethnic differences in SA precipitants in a racially/ethnically diverse sample of young adults (YAs) with a SA history. Method: Two-hundred twenty-nine young adults, ages 18-33 (87% women), reported their method of attempt, and 200 of those reported on their SA precipitants. The latter were coded by three independent judges (Data were collected March 2012-December 2016.). Results: SAs were most often precipitated by intrapersonal factors, followed by interpersonal factors. Logistic regressions revealed that Hispanic, Asian, and Biracial YAs had higher odds of reporting interpersonal precipitants compared to Black YAs. Conclusion: Suicide prevention and intervention should address both interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that increase vulnerability to SA across racial/ethnic groups, although interventions with Black YAs might focus more on intrapersonal than on interpersonal factors.
