Modern movie sound mixing utilizes impulse responses and convolution to provide a usable reproduction of dialogue and other sounds to align the visual and sonic impression while keeping the viewer engaged in the story. This paper will outline the process by which movie audio is processed to get to the final product, and provide and overview of playback platforms. Furthermore short clips of film with audio will be presented to compare the actual in situ recording to the studio mixed product, and other experimental/virtual approaches to creating impulse responses for use in the studio mix approach.

The cellular communications industry is steadily growing and expanding to solve the needs of governments, businesses and communities. Standards are fundamental to enable cooperation while promoting competition. The companies involved contribute and agree on appropriate technical specifications to ensure diversity, compatibility and facilitate worldwide commercial deployment and evolution. The specifications of cellular communications standards are extensive, complex and intentionally incomplete to spur innovation and differentiation. This makes standards education a difficult endeavor, but it is highly demanded by the wireless industry. This paper describes a practical approach to teaching cellular communications standards. Our methodology leverages software-defined radio technology and uses the abstraction layer and operating environment (ALOE) to provide a practical learning environment that facilitates developing many of the needed technical and soft skills without the inherent difficulty and cost associated with radio frequency components and regulation. We define six learning stages that assimilate the standardization process and identify key learning objectives for each. We discuss our experiences when employing the proposed methodology at Barcelona Tech in Spain, compare the approach with an equivalent class at Virginia Tech in the US and make the following observations: (1) The complexity of standards need to be abstracted and presented in a form suitable for a given class. (2) Educating about cellular communications standards is most effective when students are immersed in the process. (3) Hands-on activities need careful preparation and close guidance.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP), a fairly common gynecological complaint in women, has been associated with multiple psychological sequelae, including depression and somatization. Previous work has compared these patients to gynecological controls and women with headache, but has failed to include male comparison groups with a comparable site of chronic pain. In order to test possible sex and pain site differences, the present study compared 22 women with CPP, 22 men with either penile or testicular pain, 22 women with low back pain and 28 men with low back pain referred for a psychological evaluation as part of multidisciplinary pain treatment. Depression, coping, pain intensity and interference were assessed. Two-way analyses of variance (sex by pain site) were conducted to determine if there were group differences on demographic variables and medical history. Pain duration, age, and pain severity differed among the groups and were entered as covariates in hierarchical regression analyses designed to identify predictors of adjustment and pain coping. Sex and pain site did not contribute independently to the prediction of depressive symptoms. Pain site predicted physical functioning with low back pain patients reporting greater pain-related interference. Similar findings were demonstrated for coping. A variety of pain-coping strategies, including catastrophizing, were more frequently utilized by low back pain patients, regardless of sex. In the present study, pain severity and pain site explained more variance in depressive symptoms, physical functioning, and pain-coping than sex.

Body image dissatisfaction and its relationship to psychosocial function were investigated in 127 women with scleroderma. Results indicated elevated body image dissatisfaction, with participants reporting higher levels than a sample of patients with severe burn injuries. Age, skin tightening above the elbows, and functional disability were related to heightened body image dissatisfaction, suggesting that younger patients with more severe disease may be at greatest risk for developing body image concerns. Path analysis revealed that depression mediated the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and psychosocial function. Results suggest that body image dissatisfaction is a significant concern in women with scleroderma and should be assessed routinely. Early identification and treatment of body image dissatisfaction may help prevent the development of depression and psychosocial impairment in this population.

Article - Abstract
We present a synthetic information and modeling environment that can allow policy makers to study various counter-factual experiments in the event of a large human-initiated crisis. The specific scenario we consider is a ground detonation caused by an improvised nuclear device in a large urban region. In contrast to earlier work in this area that focuses largely on the prompt effects on human health and injury, we focus on co-evolution of individual and collective behavior and its interaction with the differentially damaged infrastructure. This allows us to study short term secondary and tertiary effects. The present environment is suitable for studying the dynamical outcomes over a two week period after the initial blast. A novel computing and data processing architecture is described; the architecture allows us to represent multiple co-evolving infrastructures and social networks at a highly resolved temporal, spatial, and individual scale. The representation allows us to study the emergent behavior of individuals as well as specific strategies to reduce casualties and injuries that exploit the spatial and temporal nature of the secondary and tertiary effects. A number of important conclusions are obtained using the modeling environment. For example, the studies decisively show that deploying ad hoc communication networks to reach individuals in the affected area is likely to have a significant impact on the overall casualties and injuries.

Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is a rare connective tissue disease that can affect multiple organ systems. Case reports and small treatment studies suggest that pain is significant in scleroderma, but few data speak of the frequency or impact of pain. This study sought to determine the frequency and impact of pain, symptoms of depression, and social network characteristics on physical functioning and social adjustment in patients with scleroderma. One hundred and forty-two scleroderma patients completed measures of pain, depressive symptoms, social network characteristics, physical functioning, and social adjustment. Sixty-three percent reported at least mild pain and 50% reported at least mild levels of depressive symptomatology. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that pain, depressive symptoms, and employment status (disabled/unemployed vs. not) were significant, independent predictors of physical functioning, together accounting for 37% of the total variance. Pain was the single strongest predictor of physical function, accounting for 20% of the variance. Depressive symptoms, physical functioning, diversity of social network, and employment status were significant independent predictors of social adjustment, together accounting for 63% of the variance. Depressive symptoms were the single strongest predictor of social adjustment, accounting for 26% of the variance. The effects of pain and physical function on social adjustment became non-significant when depressive symptoms were entered into the model, suggesting that symptoms of depression mediate the effect of pain and physical function on social adjustment. These findings indicate that pain is common in scleroderma and that pain and depressive symptoms are significant determinants of physical functioning and social adjustment, two important components of health-related quality of life. Increased attention to effective management of pain and symptoms of depression in scleroderma will likely lead to improved functioning and quality of life.

LD5655.V855 1995.W447 - Abstract
"Architecture may be many things: ie. there is no one thing that is Architecture." As tired as this phrase may be, it is extremely valid nonetheless. From Frampton's Critical Regionalism to Derrida's Deconstruction, this declaration is rendered indisputable. Whatever the architecture does become, however, it can do so only from a boundary [as in both Heiddeger's suggestion of a beginning and in the Greek belief that that is where a thing "begins its presencing"].₁ It is the boundary--the WARP [from Hertzberger]--that permits the opportunities for making to come into being. "Making" can thereby be considered to be the other critical component--the WEFT--in this process of becoming. This thesis is the beginning of a search for such a method of thinking in architecture. 1. Heidegger, Martin. Poetry, Language, Thought (Harper & Rowe, Publishers, Inc., 1971), p. 154. - Abstract
My graduate studies have centred on the use of technologies such as the Internet in the classroom. In most of my classes I was able to apply technological concepts to the topic at hand. For my culminating activity I have applied the knowledge I have gained to help another teacher use technology in her class. Specifically, I helped Connie Gross set up and administer an Internet home page in a Social Studies 30 audiographic conferencing class for the Lethbridge Community College Off-campus centres. In addition we discussed, implemented, and evaluated strategies for using the Internet in a teleconference class. I feel that the opportunity to guide a colleague through concepts I have gleaned while in graduate studies has been an excellent way to complete my graduate studies program. This, then, is the culminating report to my activities. Herein I include a journal recorded during the process and a summation of the journal in a report. Also, in the appendices I include some valuable informtion. First, a report written by Connie regarding her experience. Next, samples of email and listserv postings. Finally, perhaps the most important, Connie's web site. (To view the web site in a better format direct your web browser to http://www.agt.net/public/taIc/ss30Iindex.htm .)

- Abstract
The design and implementation of the Virginia Tech Space-Time Advanced Radio (VT-STAR), a multiple antenna element space-time (ST) processing prototype testbed, is presented. The testbed is a research tool for comparing practical and theoretical performance metrics (e.g., throughput, link reliability) in different wireless channel conditions. The prototype builds around software-defined radio (SDR) concepts on a DSP platform and provides the flexibility to implement various forms of ST techniques. Different components of the system are described in detail, including the software implementation, I/O schemes with custom hardware, and data transfer mechanisms between the DSP and the host PC. Two different example realizations are presented, a real-time demonstration and an offline measurement tool. Finally, some representative measurement results obtained in indoor environments are presented. These results show VT-STAR to be a promising tool for performing MIMO experiments and generating channel measurements that can complement simulation studies in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To the Editor. —Most dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) wounds are relatively "dry," but profuse bleeding can occur. This letter briefly reviews the control of DCR hemorrhage based on experience with more than 250 DCRs with special emphasis on the use of the suction cautery. A fiberoptic focused coaxial headlight to brightly illuminate the depths of the DCR wound is essential. Packing the nose with neurosurgical cottonoids soaked in phenylephrine hydrochloride (Neo-Synephrine) solution (0.5% in adults and 0.25% in children) reduces bleeding from the nasal mucous membrane. Injection of the incision site with lidocaine hydrochloride (Xylocaine)-epinephrine solution minimizes soft-tissue bleeding. Three cauteries should be available for all DCR operations: the unipolar, bipolar, and suction cauteries. Bleeding in the subcutaneous and muscular tissue is effectively controlled with the bipolar cautery. Bleeding from the surface of the lacrimal and nasal bones before the DCR stoma is created is best controlled with the unipolar cautery. In

The volume contains contributions by many of the major discourse analysts of the New Testament, including E.A. Nida, W. Schenk, J.P. Louw and J. Callow. Some of these essays deal with methodology, raising necessary questions about what it means to analyse discourse. Others demonstrate an already committed approach by reading specific texts. A'state-of-the-art'volume for all scholars interested in this increasingly important area of New Testament research.

Application of 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3,4,5,9,10 pentaaza-tetracyclo-5,4,102,6 08,11-dodeca-3-9-diene (BAS 106) by granular (1G) application to the medium surface or 50% wettable powder (50 WP) soil drench were compared with standard methods of application for (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride (chlormequat), butanedioic acid mono-(2,2-dimethylhydrazide) (daminozide), and alpha-cyclopropyl-alpha-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol (ancymidol) for their retardation of chrysanthemum and poinsettia growth. A 32 mg/pot BAS 106 (50 WP) rate caused temporary venial chlorosis of the leaves. BAS 106 (1G) at 6 mg/pot and BAS 106 (50 WP) at 8 mg/pot retarded Chrysanthemum × morifolium Ramat, ‘Always Pink’ as effectively as daminozide spray at 2500 mg/liter; whereas the same treatments were more effective on chrysanthemum ‘Ritz’ than either a 2500 mg/liter spray or 0.25 mg/pot ancymidol drench. BAS 106 (1G) topdressed at 18 mg/pot or a BAS 106 (50 WP) drench at 8 mg/pot retarded Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ‘Brilliant Diamond’ and ‘Paul Mikkelsen’ as much as a 0.5 mg/pot ancymidol drench and more than a 3000 mg/liter chlormequat drench.

- Abstract
The purpose of this study was two-fold: to examine secular changes in the size of the knee joint during the last century in White males and females, and to compare the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis over the same time frame. In addition, a specific effort was made to determine a relationship between the modern rise in obesity and knee osteoarthritis. The sample included 291 males and 140 females from both the Robert J. Terry Collection and the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection. The results indicate no consistent secular change in direction or location between White males and females. Although significant secular change was present in some of the size variables, it was generally not indicative of an increase in the area of the weight-bearing surface. The findings suggest that although there is a complex relationship between joint loading and joint area, the modern secular increase in weight, coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle, has not had a sizeable effect on knee joint size. Clinical studies have noted an increase in the presence of knee osteoarthritis over the last century. Obesity and osteoarthritis have been shown to be associated in several studies utilizing radiological data. However, often the criteria relies heavily on joint space narrowing and not the osteological/dry bone impact. The William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection allowed for the possible detection of a relationship between obesity and osteoarthritis of the knee because it provides a modern skeletal sample where weight is known and obese subjects are present. Including the Terry collection, housing a skeletal sample that pre-dates those found in the Bass collection, allowed for a comparison of general prevalence rates over a longer period of time. Results are fairly consistent with clinical and radiological research, with the exception that dry bone scoring of osteoarthritis tends to produce prevalence rates much higher than possible from radiological detection. Significant associations were found between the presence of osteoarthritis and the more recent Bass collection, as expected. Age and sex also provided some significant associations with knee osteoarthritis as well. Based on individuals with known weight, a significant association was observed between the incidence and progression of OA. Obese individuals, in particular, appear to be at a higher risk of developing knee osteoarthritis, as well as having problems with severity. There did not, however, appear to be an association between obesity and osteoarthritis of the medical tibiofemoral compartment, as some reports have posited. Finally, the nonrandom nature of the available data allows for a comparison between randomization methods and the more traditional standard statistical algorithms that must conform to assumptions of a normal random distribution. This study found only minimal differences between the two approaches illustrating the relevance of randomization methods, while suggesting reliability in the standard tests with regard to the two skeletal samples used for this research.

- Abstract
This large-scale work is the application of modern theories of discourse analysis to questions of Greek grammar, especially with respect to the debate over the literary integrity of Philippians. Chapter 1 introduces the linguistic theory of discourse analysis, defining key terms, sketching its historical evolution and outlining its major tenets. Chapter 2 sets forth a model of discourse analysis primarily based on the systemic functional theories of M.A.K. Halliday. Chapter 3 outlines the historical-critical debate over the literary integrity of Philippians. Chapter 4 inspects the genre of Philippians, challenging rhetorical approaches to the text and proposing instead an epistolary classification, viz.'personal, hortatory letter'. Chapter 5 focuses on the discourse structure of the letter, investigating its use of ideational, interpersonal and textual functions of Hellenistic Greek. In chapter 6, relevant issues of biblical hermeneutics are addressed.
