This study investigates the impact of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on microstructure and properties of a martensitic stainless steel AISI 431. The reasonably simplistic microstructure tailoring with DCT delivers a novel pathway towards advanced 3rd generation high-strength steels (AHSS), whilst utilizing existing alloys and chemistry. The resulting microstructural changes deliver improved strength and hardness of the material, whilst still sustaining good elongation properties. DCT reduces the material's toughness but improves its deformation resistance and wear resistance. The study reveals that DCT modifies the microstructural evolution during tempering. During the conventional treatment, AISI 431 develops austenite reversion transformation (ART), which allows the high strength and elongation capabilities formed with transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP). In contrast, DCT progresses the microstructure even further by retransforming the reverted austenite formed through ART into tertiary α-martensite, ε-martensite and carbides that increase the strength and deformation behavior of AISI 431. The novel microstructural modification that we have entitled cryogenic austenite retransformation (CAR), is both experimentally and theoretically assessed. The underlying transformation mechanisms of CAR and individual stages of DCT were evaluated with ex-situ electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The impact of DCT on the modified transformation capabilities of AISI 431 is discussed in relation to possible implementation in automotive industry as a universally applicable treatment procedure.

Voltage controlled magnetic components, which consist in dynamically controllable inductances and transformers, are a promising yet understudied technology of growing interest. In fact, these components offer circuit designers an additional degree of freedom to achieve multi-objective optimization with improved Pareto fronts. This article provides a review of some technologies that can be used to create controlled magnetics, including emerging technologies with high potential. Furthermore, a list of possible applications is proposed, where these components can provide a significant advantage in terms of efficiency, size reduction, or controllability. Special emphasis is laid on a use case: a 20 kW multiport DC/DC converter in which power flow control is achieved using voltage-controlled inductors based on partially saturable magnetic cores.

Magneto-optical (MO) effects, viz. magnetically induced changes in light intensity or polarization upon reflection from or transmission through a magnetic sample, were discovered over a century and a half ago. Initially they played a crucially relevant role in unveiling the fundamentals of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. A more broad-based relevance and wide-spread use of MO methods, however, remained quite limited until the 1960s due to a lack of suitable, reliable and easy-to-operate light sources. The advent of Laser technology and the availability of other novel light sources led to an enormous expansion of MO measurement techniques and applications that continues to this day (see section 1). The here-assembled roadmap article is intended to provide a meaningful survey over many of the most relevant recent developments, advances, and emerging research directions in a rather condensed form, so that readers can easily access a significant overview about this very dynamic research field. While light source technology and other experimental developments were crucial in the establishment of today's magneto-optics, progress also relies on an ever-increasing theoretical understanding of MO effects from a quantum mechanical perspective (see section 2), as well as using electromagnetic theory and modelling approaches (see section 3) to enable quantitatively reliable predictions for ever more complex materials, metamaterials, and device geometries. The latest advances in established MO methodologies and especially the utilization of the MO Kerr effect (MOKE) are presented in sections 4 (MOKE spectroscopy), 5 (higher order MOKE effects), 6 (MOKE microscopy), 8 (high sensitivity MOKE), 9 (generalized MO ellipsometry), and 20 (Cotton-Mouton effect in two-dimensional materials). In addition, MO effects are now being investigated and utilized in spectral ranges, to which they originally seemed completely foreign, as those of synchrotron radiation x-rays (see section 14 on three-dimensional magnetic characterization and section 16 on light beams carrying orbital angular momentum) and, very recently, the terahertz (THz) regime (see section 18 on THz MOKE and section 19 on THz ellipsometry for electron paramagnetic resonance detection). Magneto-optics also demonstrates its strength in a unique way when combined with femtosecond laser pulses (see section 10 on ultrafast MOKE and section 15 on magneto-optics using x-ray free electron lasers), facilitating the very active field of time-resolved MO spectroscopy that enables investigations of phenomena like spin relaxation of non-equilibrium photoexcited carriers, transient modifications of ferromagnetic order, and photo-induced dynamic phase transitions, to name a few. Recent progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which is intimately linked to the achieved impressive ability to reliably fabricate materials and functional structures at the nanoscale, now enables the exploitation of strongly enhanced MO effects induced by light-matter interaction at the nanoscale (see section 12 on magnetoplasmonics and section 13 on MO metasurfaces). MO effects are also at the very heart of powerful magnetic characterization techniques like Brillouin light scattering and time-resolved pump-probe measurements for the study of spin waves (see section 7), their interactions with acoustic waves (see section 11), and ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensing applications based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond (see section 17)., Despite our best attempt to represent the field of magneto-optics accurately and do justice to all its novel developments and its diversity, the research area is so extensive and active that there remains great latitude in deciding what to include in an article of this sort, which in turn means that some areas might not be adequately represented here. However, we feel that the 20 sections that form this 2022 magneto-optics roadmap article, each written by experts in the field and addressing a specific subject on only two pages, provide an accurate snapshot of where this research field stands today. Correspondingly, it should act as a valuable reference point and guideline for emerging research directions in modern magneto-optics, as well as illustrate the directions this research field might take in the foreseeable future., Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 55 (46), ISSN:0022-3727, ISSN:1361-6463

Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy is a versatile technique to image magnetic domains and evaluate the behavior of magnetic materials. However, MOKE has been rarely applied to the research of low magnetic steels with complex microstructure including micron-sized features. This study reveals the potential of implementing MOKE microscopy for analyzing the microstructure and stress state of martensitic steels with high carbide density (example conducted on AISI M2 steel grade). For the first time, the resulting MOKE domain images are used to analyze the size and morphology of martensite lath structures without chemical etching of the material's surface. Furthermore, MOKE microscopy allowed the confirmation and volumetric fraction estimation of retained austenite, despite the small size and volumetric fraction of under 1%. The validity of the MOKE microscopy analysis is cross-checked with scanning electron microscopy of etched samples and X-ray diffraction. Finally, MOKE microscopy in combination with Vickers indentation is applied to determine the residual stress state of the selected steel, which was varied by processing the steel material with conventional heat treatment scheme and heat treatment including deep cryogenic treatment (DCT). The method is proven effective in indicating the residual stress qualitatively. The measurements proved, that the residual stresses are significantly reduced in DCT steel samples, as theoretically anticipated. The conducted pioneering work provides important research towards the application of MOKE microscopy for the research of steel microstructure, properties and residual stresses as well as delivers a new perspective for determining the effectiveness of DCT on the steel properties.

The simultaneous separational control of motion of individual objects is vital to achieve high efficiency separation for biological analytes in biomedical applications. Here, we show the selective and directed movement of different populations of microbeads depending on their size in a flowless environment by means of a hexagonally structured soft-magnetic microchip platform. By adjusting strength and asymmetry of a modulated in-plane magnetic field, discrete and switchable movement patterns of two different types of beads above a magnetic surface structure are achieved. Starting from a heterogeneous mixture of bead populations and depending on the type of field sequences, directional forward transport of one type of beads is achieved, while the other bead population is immobilized. Despite significant size and magnetic content distributions within each population of microbeads, high separation efficiencies are demonstrated. The selection and movement processes are supported by full-scale magnetofluidic numerical simulations. The magnetic platform allowing multidirectional and selective microbead movement can greatly contribute to the progress of functional lab-on-chip and future diagnostics devices.

The manipulation of superparamagnetic microbeads for lab-on-a-chip applications relies on the steering of microbeads across an altering stray field landscape on top of soft magnetic parent structures. Using ab initio principles, we show three-dimensional simulations forecasting the controlled movement of microbeads. Simulated aspects of microbead behaviour include the looping and lifting of microbeads around a magnetic circular structure, the flexible bead movement along symmetrically distributed triangular structures, and the dragging of magnetic beads across an array of exchange biased magnetic microstripes. The unidirectional motion of microbeads across a string of oval elements is predicted by simulations and validated experimentally. Each of the simulations matches the experimental results, proving the robustness and accuracy of the applied numerical method. The computer experiments provide details on the particle motion not accessible by experiments. The simulation capabilities prove to be an essential part for the estimation of future lab-on-chip designs.

Mechanically driven magnetoelectric (ME) antennas have been demonstrated to be one of the most effective methods to miniaturise antennas compared to state-of-the-art compact antennas. However, the nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) ME antennas are fragile due to their suspended thin-film heterostructure, and have very low power handling capabilities. Here we show that solidly mounted resonator (SMR)-based NEMS ME antennas on a Bragg acoustic resonator, which have a circular resonating disk of 200 μm diameters and operate at 1.75 GHz, show a high antenna gain of -18.8 dBi and 1dB compression point (P1dB) of 30.4 dBm. Compared to same-size thin-film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) ME antennas with a free-standing membrane, the SMR-based antennas are much more structurally stable with 23.3 dB higher power handling capability and easier fabrication steps. These SMR-based ME antennas are fabricated with processes compatible with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), exhibiting dramatic size miniaturisation, high power handling, high mechanical robustness, simple fabrication processes, and much higher antenna radiation gain compared to same-size state-of-the-art antennas.

The possibility of tuning the magnetic properties of materials with voltage (converse magnetoelectricity) or generating electric voltage with magnetic fields (direct magnetoelectricity) has opened new avenues in a large variety of technological fields, ranging from information technologies to healthcare devices and including a great number of multifunctional integrated systems, such as mechanical antennas, magnetometers, and radio frequency (RF) tunable inductors, which have been realized due to the strong strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling found in ME composites. The development of single-phase multiferroic materials (which exhibit simultaneous ferroelectric and ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic orders), multiferroic heterostructures, as well as progress in other ME mechanisms, such as electrostatic surface charging or magneto-ionics (voltage-driven ion migration), have a large potential to boost energy efficiency in spintronics and magnetic actuators. This article focuses on existing ME materials and devices and reviews the state of the art in their performance. The most recent progress on different ME devices based on ME heterostructures is presented but with a larger emphasis on ME antennas and sensors due to the significant advances achieved in these applications. The rapid development of mechanically actuated ME antennas has been observed over the past several years, producing ME antennas that are miniaturized by 1-2 orders compared to conventional antenna size. Focused ion beam (FIB) irradiation was applied to an ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt film to create micrometer-sized, square-shaped regions with perpendicular orientation of magnetization embedded in an in-plane magnetized environment. The FIB parameters like ion fluence and scanning direction are used to control the magnetic properties of the irradiated areas. We have studied the magnetic and magnetooptical properties in the irradiated areas as a function of ion fluence by means of component selective magnetooptical Kerr microscopy that measures separately pure polar and pure longitudinal components of magnetization. Two fluence ranges that induce perpendicular magnetization components were observed. In the higher fluence range, four regions with independently inclined out-of-plane magnetization, depending on FIB fast scan direction, and an unexpected magnetic domain structure were distinguished inside the squares irradiated by FIB.

Highly sensitive magnetic field sensors using magnetoelectric (ME) bulk and thin-film composites consisting of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases are discussed. Examples include PZT (Pb(ZrxTi1–x)O3) fibers and AlN as the piezoelectric component and amorphous magnetostrictive material, respectively, or their multilayers. Additionally, self-organized ME composites are discussed. These ME sensors offer a passive (consuming little to no power) nature, high sensitivities, large effect enhancements at mechanical resonances, and large linear dynamic ranges. At mechanical resonance, limits of detection in the fT/Hz1/2 range can be achieved. Below the mechanical resonance frequency, the sensitivity can be enhanced through frequency conversion using alternating current magnetic or electric fields or by using magnetic field-induced changes of the elastic properties, the delta-E effect, where E represents Young’s modulus. Noise floors of about 1–100 pT/Hz1/2 at a frequency of f = 1 Hz can be obtained depending on the sensor size and the operational mode. For applications in unshielded environments, approaches to suppress acoustic and vibrational cross-sensitivities are presented.

Magnetoelectric resonators have been studied for the detection of small amplitude and low frequency magnetic fields via the delta-E effect, mainly in fundamental bending or bulk resonance modes. Here, we present an experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetoelectric thin-film cantilevers that can be operated in bending modes (BMs) and torsion modes (TMs) as a magnetic field sensor. A magnetoelastic macrospin model is combined with an electromechanical finite element model and a general description of the delta-E effect of all stiffness tensor components Cij is derived. Simulations confirm quantitatively that the delta-E effect of the C66 component has the promising potential of significantly increasing the magnetic sensitivity and the maximum normalized frequency change ∆fr. However, the electrical excitation of TMs remains challenging and is found to significantly diminish the gain in sensitivity. Experiments reveal the dependency of the sensitivity and ∆fr of TMs on the mode number, which differs fundamentally from BMs and is well explained by our model. Because the contribution of C11 to the TMs increases with the mode number, the first-order TM yields the highest magnetic sensitivity. Overall, general insights are gained for the design of high-sensitivity delta-E effect sensors, as well as for frequency tunable devices based on the delta-E effect.

Magneto-optical microscopy, prominently represented by Kerr microscopy, is the most versatile in-lab imaging technique for magnetic microstructure analysis on any kind of magnetic material being microscopically ordered in magnetic domains. Domains can be studied on a wide range of lateral scales reaching from centimetres down to 200 nanometres, under static conditions as well as under dynamic magnetic field excitation ranging between quasistatic and beyond the microwave regime, at temperatures between 4 K and 800 K, and in applied fields exceeding the Tesla range in arbitrary directions. The surface magnetisation vector field of soft magnetic materials can be quantitatively measured, and the magnetic layers in superlattices may be imaged separately. By plotting the image intensity as a function of magnetic field, local magnetisation curves are obtained that can be interpreted straightforwardly as the underlying magnetisation process is imaged simultaneously. In this chapter the physical and technical basics of magneto-optical microscopy are reviewed together with examples that demonstrate the benefits of the technique.

We directly connect specific magnetic domain behaviors in magnetically modulated thin-film magnetoelectric composite sensors to the effective noise levels exhibited. Through simultaneous magnetoelectric response and time-resolved-magneto-optical-microscopy measurements, as well as additional complementary noise and limit of detection measurements, different regimes of magnetic noise with distinct magnetic domain activities are identified. Transitions between magnetic domain states with differing domain-wall densities and local effective magnetic anisotropy perturbations directly influence the magnetoelectric sensor signal and the effective noise level. By this, the limit of detection of the sensor deteriorates by orders of magnitude, depending on the discrete magnetic domain characteristics and interconnecting magnetic losses. We show that the performance of magnetic field sensors is dominated by the physical micromagnetic processes revealed. The underlying physical mechanisms should affect all magnetic-layer-based field-sensing devices.

International audience; Magnetoelastic sensors for the detection of low-frequency and low-amplitude magnetic fields are in the focus of research for more than 30 years. In order to minimize the limit of detection (LOD) of such sensor systems, it is of high importance to understand and to be able to quantify the relevant noise sources. In this contribution, cantilever-type electromechanical and magnetoelastic resonators, respectively, are comprehensively investigated and mathematically described not only with regard to their phase sensitivity but especially to the extent of the sensor-intrinsic phase noise. Both measurements and calculations reveal that the fundamental LOD is limited by additive phase noise due to thermal-mechanical noise of the resonator, i.e. by thermally induced random vibrations of the cantilever, and by thermal-electrical noise of the piezoelectric material. However, due to losses in the magnetic material parametric flicker phase noise arises, limiting the overall performance. In particular, it is shown that the LOD is virtually independent of the magnetic sensitivity but is solely determined by the magnetic losses. Instead of the sensitivity, the magnetic losses, represented by the material's effective complex permeability, should be considered as the most important parameter for the further improvement of such sensors in the future. This implication is not only valid for magnetoelastic cantilevers but also applies to any type of magnetoelastic resonator.

We report on the direct observation of spin wave and elastic wave emission from magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic thin films. Driven by alternating homogeneous magnetic fields the magnetic domain walls act as coherent magnetisation wave sources. Directional and low damped elastic waves below and above the ferromagnetic resonance are excited. The wave vector of the magnetoelastically induced acoustic waves is tuned by varying the excitation frequency. The occurrence of elastic wave emission is proved by a combination of micromagnetic and mechanical finite element simulations. Domain wall emitted magnetostatic surface spin waves occur at higher frequencies, which characteristics are confirmed by micromagnetic simulations. The distinct modes of magnetisation wave excitation from micromagnetic objects are a general physical phenomenon relevant for dynamic magnetisation processes in structured magnetic films. Magnetic domain walls can act as reconfigurable antennas for spin wave and elastic wave generation. The wave orientation can be controlled separately via the domain wall orientation for elastic waves and via magnetization orientation for magnetostatic surface spin waves.

Sensors based on the Delta-E effect can detecting low-frequency and low-amplitude magnetic fields, which makes them potentially interesting for applications in biomagnetism, which require high sensitivity and low noise levels. This work analyzes the high magnetic sensitivity for different resonance modes of cantilever sensors. It is found that the Delta-E effect significantly depends on the resonance, with second-order bending modes increasing the magnetic sensitivity compared to first-order modes. The weighting of local properties by mode shape is not only key to understanding and modeling the Delta-E effect, but also an important factor in improving sensitivity.

While the magnetoelectric (ME) resonator is promising for magnetometers, very low-frequency and miniaturized antennas, and energy harvesters, devices based on the converse ME effect in amorphous Metglas alloy face frequency-response nonlinearity issues under high vibrational amplitude. This study aims to resolve this nonlinearity issue, by addressing the dependence of nonlinearity on bias field, driving voltage, mechanical quality factor, and frequency-sweep direction. With magnetic field as a control variable, the effects of nonlinear behavior on a ME antenna's communication distance, bandwidth, and modulation are also presented.

We explore the generation of propagating dipolar spin waves by homogeneous magnetic field excitation in the proximity of the boundaries of magnetic microstructures. Domain wall motion, precessional dynamics, and propagating spin waves are directly imaged by time-resolved wide-field magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy. The aspects of spin wave generation are clarified by micromagnetic calculations matching the experimental results. The region of dipolar spin wave formation is confined to the local resonant excitation due to non-uniform internal demagnetization fields at the edges of the patterned sample. Magnetic domain walls act as a border for the propagation of plane and low damped spin waves, thus restraining the spin waves within the individual magnetic domains. The findings are of significance for the general understanding of structural and configurational magnetic boundaries for the creation, the propagation, and elimination of spin waves.

To enable the measurement of low-frequency magnetic signals with cantilever type thin-film magnetoelectric sensors, magnetic frequency conversion transfers the frequency of the desired signal into the mechanical resonance of the cantilever. The system electronics for the realization of this approach and the approach itself introduce additional noise sources as compared with direct detection, which lowers the limit of detection. In this paper, the magnetic frequency conversion noise sources are reviewed, discussed, and evaluated for our setup. The model for the nonlinear transfer process is implemented in the time domain. This enables the consideration of the pump noise in a noise equivalent circuit. For the sensor type under investigation, the dominant noise near its optimal working point originates from the pump source. If the noise of the pump can be decreased and magnetic excess noise is not dominant, the noise limit is the thermal-mechanical noise of the sensor. The implementation of a filter after the excitation source decreases the limit of detection to 60 pT/ $\sqrt {\text {Hz}}$ at 10 Hz.

Domain wall dynamics in highly magnetostrictive microwires is remarkably sensitive to thermal treatment. One of the reasons is a partial release of the internal stresses that originate during the production process. Another reason is an interaction of the domain wall with local pinning sites, such as surface inhomogeneities, free volumes, or clusters of ferromagnetic atoms, present in as-cast microwires. However, the observation of domain wall shape variations after thermal treatment or following an interaction with a pinning site is challenging. In this paper, we utilize the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) to locally map the domain wall shape and velocity in cylindrical microwires. The domain wall is trapped in a magnetic potential well, moving back and forth with limited speed. Two complementary techniques are employed in the study: a laser-based setup and time-resolved MOKE microscopy. Different kinds of domain wall propagation are observed. While a planar domain wall propagates synchronously with the potential well, surface pinning gives rise to local jumps and distortions of the domain wall. We relate the first kind of motion to the pinning-free propagation of the domain wall and the second to the propagation of a distorted wall. Finally, local speed and the shapes of the domain wall before and after the introduction of an artificial pinning site are compared.

The stripes were submitted to local anisotropy modifications by micrometric beam synchrotron X-ray irradiation. Our results include data on the dispersion relationships and group velocities corresponding to spin waves excited at both the non-irradiated and the irradiated regions. Whereas in the former case we observed standing spin waves with transverse-to-the stripe axis wave vector, in the latter one, for which the wave vector of the spin waves was parallel-to-the stripe axis, propagating spin waves were excited. In both regions, we measured the effective propagation distance of the spin waves, which resulted to be independent of the wave vector orientation. In the spin waves excited at the irradiated region, we also measured the decay time and effective damping coefficient, which was in good agreement with previously reported values obtained from FMR measurements in amorphous Fe80B20 continuous films. We show that the interaction of the non-irradiated and irradiated zones results, at the stripe transverse saturation remanence and under an exciting field frequency of 4 GHz, in the introduction of a π phase shift between the standing spin waves excited at both sides of the irradiated region. This result opens the possibility of using the local, transverse to the stripe axis, magnetic anisotropy easy axis induced by the X-ray irradiation as a crucial constituent of a zero-applied field spin wave phase-shifter.

Precise movement control is a key feature for the use of superparamagnetic microbeads in medical and biological lab-on-chip applications. We demonstrate the unidirectional transport of magnetic and biological carriers along a chain of oval shaped magnetic thin film elements by in-plane rotating magnetic fields, enabling controllable manipulation and separation schemes. The same fundamental unidirectional movement is realized independent of the sense of magnetic field rotation and orientation of the magnetic pathway. The flowless directional transport of magnetically labeled rat embryonic fibroblasts is presented, validating the applicability of the structures for biological purposes. The lined up ferromagnetic structures are a critical building block for the construction of flexible pathways for biological lab-on-a-chip applications.

This paper investigates magnetic field and stress-induced magnetic domain reorientation and its correlation with Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN). The magnetic domain dynamics and MBN of grain-oriented transverse and longitudinal electrical steels are studied by using time-resolved magneto-optical imaging. Time and frequency-domain characteristics of MBN signal are investigated for evaluation of stress state and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Transitions between magnetic domain states with differing tensile stress and magnetic anisotropy directly influence the MBN signal. Its shown that 180° domain wall (DW) reorganization and DW-type conversion generate peaks in the MBN measurement for longitudinal and transverse electrical steel, respectively. The magnetic domain imaging reveals complicated domain arrangement processes in transverse electrical steel. The results provide a physical insight into bulk micromagnetic phenomena.

We report on a component-selective and vectorial magneto-optical imaging setup for the visualization of magnetization processes with picosecond temporal resolution. The stable imaging setup is suitable for the investigation of high excitation frequency magnetization dynamics, including domain wall motion, precession of magnetization, and spin-waves. The orthogonally aligned in-plane and out-of-plane components of magnetization are separated by untangling the superpositioned longitudinal and polar magneto-optical effects. Combining images obtained with varying plane and angle of incidence of illumination allow for the quantitative and time-dependent extraction of the spatial magnetization response. The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated with the phase-locked imaging of spin precession and spin-waves in a structured Co 40 Fe 40 B 20 thin film at the precessional frequency of the magnetic microstructure at 1.9 GHz.

Thin-film magnetoelectric sensors reach a sensitivity in the picotesla range around the resonance frequency of the mechanical structure. Using magnetic frequency conversion, a magnetic low-frequency signal can be transferred to the sensor's resonance frequency. However, the required additional large carrier signal leaks to the sensor's output with a large amplitude, requiring a wide dynamic range of the sensor electronics. In this paper, it is shown that the unbalance of the magnetostriction curve is responsible for this leakage and that a suppression approach is devised. After theoretical analysis of the nonlinear magnetostriction characteristic, a carrier suppression is achieved through balancing by an altered signal excitation. A suppression of the carrier signal of about three orders of magnitude is measured. Thus, the requirements regarding analog-to-digital conversion can be reduced.

Fabrication of a multistrip magnetic/nonmagnetic structure in a thin sandwiched Ni layer [Si(5 nm)/Ni(10 nm)/Si] by a focused ion beam (FIB) irradiation has been attempted. A control experiment was initially performed by irradiation with a standard 30 keV Ga ion beam at various fluences. Analyses were carried out by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, X-ray reflectivity, magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements and MOKE microscopy. With increasing ion fluence, the coercivity as well as Kerr rotation decreases. A threshold ion fluence has been identified, where ferromagnetism of the Ni layer is lost at room temperature and due to Si incorporation into the Ni layer, a Ni0.68Si0.32 alloy layer is formed. This fluence was used in FIB irradiation of parallel 50 nm wide stripes, leaving 1 micrometer wide unirradiated stripes in between. MOKE microscopy on this FIB-patterned sample has revealed interacting magnetic domains across several stripes. Considering shape anisotropy effects, which would favor an alignment of magnetization parallel to the stripe axis, the opposite behavior is observed. Magneto-elastic effects introducing a stress-induced anisotropy component oriented perpendicular to the stripe axis are the most plausible explanation for the observed behavior., 12 pages, 12 figures (Figure numbers up to 7)

Composite magnetoelectrics implemented as thin film heterostructures are discussed in view of their applicability as highly sensitive magnetic field sensors. Here, either PZT or AlN served as piezoelectric component. The magnetostrictive phase consisted of layer systems based on FeCo or (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10. All functional layers were deposited with thicknesses of a few micrometers on Si cantilever structures with typical lateral dimensions of 25 mm by 2.2 mm. Magnetoelectric coefficients as large as 6900 V/cm Oe and a limit of detection as low as 1 pT/(Hz)1/2 were measured. Currently, the best result demonstrates a detection limit of 500 fT/(Hz)1/2 at 958 Hz frequency using a set of two sensors for external noise suppression. A frequency conversion technique is proposed to broaden the applicability of resonant magnetoelectric sensors to a wider frequency range. Finally, the achieved sensor performance is evaluated with regard to typical magnetic field amplitudes in medical applications.

Magnetoelectric (ME) thin film composites consisting of sputtered piezoelectric (PE) and magnetostrictive (MS) layers enable for measurements of magnetic fields passively, i.e. an AC magnetic field directly generates an ME voltage by mechanical coupling of the MS deformation to the PE phase. In order to achieve high field sensitivities a magnetic bias field is necessary to operate at the maximum piezomagnetic coefficient of the MS phase, harnessing mechanical resonances further enhances this direct ME effect size. Despite being able to detect very small AC field amplitudes, exploiting mechanical resonances directly, implies a limitation to available signal bandwidth along with the inherent inability to detect DC or very low frequency magnetic fields. The presented work demonstrates converse ME modulation of thin film Si cantilever composites of mesoscopic dimensions (25 mm × 2.45 mm × 0.35 mm), employing piezoelectric AlN and magnetostrictive FeCoSiB films of 2 µm thickness each. A high frequency mechanical resonance at about 515 kHz leads to strong induced voltages in a surrounding pickup coil with matched self-resonance, leading to field sensitivities up to 64 kV/T. A DC limit of detection of 210 pT/Hz1/2 as well as about 70 pT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz, without the need for a magnetic bias field, pave the way towards biomagnetic applications.

The strong strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling found in thin-film ME heterostructures has attracted an ever-increasing interest and enables realization of a great number of integrated multiferroic devices, such as magnetometers, mechanical antennas, RF tunable inductors and filters. This paper first reviews the thin-film characterization techniques for both piezoelectric and magnetostrictive thin films, which are crucial in determining the strength of the ME coupling. After that, the most recent progress on various integrated multiferroic devices based on thin-film ME heterostructures are presented. In particular, rapid development of thin-film ME magnetometers has been seen over the past few years. These ultra-sensitive magnetometers exhibit extremely low limit of detection (sub-pT/Hz1/2) for low-frequency AC magnetic fields, making them potential candidates for applications of medical diagnostics. Other devices reviewed in this paper include acoustically actuated nanomechanical ME antennas with miniaturized size by 1–2 orders compared to the conventional antenna; integrated RF tunable inductors with a wide operation frequency range; integrated RF tunable bandpass filter with dual H- and E-field tunability. All these integrated multiferroic devices are compact, lightweight, power-efficient, and potentially integrable with current complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, showing great promise for applications in future biomedical, wireless communication, and reconfigurable electronic systems.

Temperature measurements are vital in laboratory and industry settings. We demonstrate magnetooptical measurement schemes to relate magnetic and micromagnetic features to temperature sensing using magnetooptical active iron garnet films. A particular focus is on a temperature measurement scheme based on changes in the magnetic domain wall susceptibility, analyzing the resulting magnetooptical signal amplitude in a magnetic modulation field. The range of application is limited by the Neel temperature of the sensing garnet material. Temperatures are perceived with an accuracy of below 0.1 °C from the changes in the magnetooptical domain wall response. The thin film sensor element features additionally high sensitivity magnetic field and electrical current sensing capabilities, allowing for multi-functional sensor applications.

Highlights X-ray irradiation of amorphous stripes allows to stabilize a transverse 180o wall. An inhomogeneous resonance can be excited with a 180° phase-shift across the wall. That phase-shift can be exploited into the design of magnonic devices. We report on the induction, through X-ray irradiation, of local anisotropy modifications in amorphous Fe80B20 stripes prepared by laser lithography from 15 nm thick films deposited by pulsed laser ablation. Those anisotropy modifications, taking place in a zone having a dimension of 15 μm around the X-ray beam (2 µm width) incidence area center point, lead to an effective transverse-to-the-stripe long axis local magnetic easy axis that can be exploited to stably localize a 180° domain wall, in remanence after saturation with a transverse-to the stripe easy axis dc field. Upon stabilizing that wall it is possible to excite spatially inhomogeneous ferromagnetic resonances nearby the irradiated region (IR). The time dependencies of the magnetization precession at both sides of the IR exhibit a uniform phase shift of 180° over distances of the order of 20 μm from the stabilized domain wall. The influence of the size of anti-notches on the domain wall propagation in Permalloy nanowires with edge taper is investigated. The critical magnetic fields and current pulses required for a domain wall to pass a symmetrical circular anti-notch obstacle were estimated by high-resolution in-situ Kerr microscopy experiments and by micromagnetic simulations. The nanowires, made using electron beam lithography and ion beam etching, had an average width of 220 nm and the anti-notches consisted of circular features that increased the wire width from 5% to 35%. The critical magnetic flux densities for domain walls to pass the obstacles increased with anti-notch diameter, from 0.6 mT to 3.4 mT in the simulations and 0.3 mT to 1.5 mT in the experiment. The critical current densities ranged from $0.5 \times {10^{12}}\ \text{A/m}^{2}$ to $10 \times {10^{12}}\ \text{A/m}^{2}$ in the simulations, with a strong dependence on the domain wall type, but the experiment yielded higher critical current densities of $6 \times {10^{12}}\ \text{A/m}^{2}$ to $25 \times {10^{12}}\ \text{A/m}^{2}$ .

In this work surface acoustic Love wave delay line magnetic field sensors with varying magnetostrictive layer thicknesses are discussed. Amorphous FeCoSiB is used as the sensitive layer with a thickness variation in the range of 25-400 nm. Each sensor is analyzed both by magneto-optical methods as well as electrical signal and noise measurements. In accordance with previously reported simulation results, the impact on the acoustically propagating wave's velocity distinctly increased with thicker magnetostrictive layers leading to magnetic sensitivities as high as 35 rad/T for a delay line coated with 400 nm thick FeCoSiB. Measurements of the sensor-intrinsic phase noise revealed distinct flicker phase noise that scales proportionally with the increase in magnetic sensitivity, thus leading to virtually constant limits of detection (LOD). Assuming that the observed flicker noise is caused by magnetic hysteresis losses due to the high-frequency excitation of the magnetic material, the LOD's independence of the magnetic sensitivity can even be shown analytically. However, it also becomes clear that such sensors need a magnetostrictive coating with a minimum thickness of at least 50 nm such that the signal-to-noise ratio is dominated by the magnetic material and not by fundamental noise contributions of the substrate. On the contrary, layers with thickness above 300 nm lead to distinct higher hysteresis losses that outrun the simultaneous increase in sensitivity, thus leading to a worse overall performance.

Magnetic properties of highly magnetostrictive amorphous glass-coated microwires are strongly correlated to the presence of a glass coating that introduces a spatially inhomogeneous stress field distribution. We investigate the influence of mechanical stresses on the inclination of magnetic domain walls in magnetic microwires. Magneto-optical Kerr effect imaging is used to compare the tilted orientation of the domain wall shape in as-cast and annealed microwires. Angular dependencies of magnetization loops measured by alternating gradient field magnetometry reveal that the change of domain wall tilting with annealing is related to the decrease of magnetic anisotropy with axial orientation. Finally, micromagnetic simulations are used to show that sufficiently high uniaxial magnetic anisotropy gives rise to the presence of observed charged domain walls with tilted orientation.
