Light pollution is a global threat to biodiversity, especially migratory organisms, some of which traverse hemispheric scales. Research on light pollution has grown significantly over the past decades, but our review of migratory organisms demonstrates gaps in our understanding, particularly beyond migratory birds. Research across spatial scales reveals the multifaceted effects of artificial light on migratory species, ranging from local and regional to macroscale impacts. These threats extend beyond species that are active at night - broadening the scope of this threat. Emerging tools for measuring light pollution and its impacts, as well as ecological forecasting techniques, present new pathways for conservation, including transdisciplinary approaches.

Organisms have been shifting their timing of life history events (phenology) in response to changes in the emergence of resources induced by climate change. Yet understanding these patterns at large scales and across long time series is often challenging. Here we used the US weather surveillance radar network to collect data on the timing of communal swallow and martin roosts and evaluate the scale of phenological shifts and its potential association with temperature. The discrete morning departures of these aggregated aerial insectivores from ground-based roosting locations are detected by radars around sunrise. For the first time, we applied a machine learning algorithm to automatically detect and track these large-scale behaviors. We used 21 years of data from 12 weather surveillance radar stations in the Great Lakes region to quantify the phenology in roosting behavior of aerial insectivores at three spatial levels: local roost cluster, radar station, and across the Great Lakes region. We show that their peak roosting activity timing has advanced by 2.26 days per decade at the regional scale. Similar signals of advancement were found at the station scale, but not at the local roost cluster scale. Air temperature trends in the Great Lakes region during the active roosting period were predictive of later stages of roosting phenology trends (75% and 90% passage dates). Our study represents one of the longest-term broad-scale phenology examinations of avian aerial insectivore species responding to environmental change and provides a stepping stone for examining potential phenological mismatches across trophic levels at broad spatial scales.

Objectives. To investigate resilience strategies used by Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) to navigate racism and heterosexism.Methods. In 2019, we conducted in-depth interviews with 46 Black MSM in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Cleveland, Ohio. Thematic analysis, informed by intersectionality, was used to identify intersectional resilience within the context of participants’ lives.Results. Our analyses revealed ways in which Black MSM respond to stigma and oppression. We identified the following themes that capture these experiences: pride in intersectional identities, perseverance, community advocacy, and social support. Our analyses reveal how men draw on these assets and resources to positively adapt despite experiences of racism and heterosexism.Conclusions. Intersectional resilience can support Black MSM in navigating racism and heterosexism. However, public health interventions at the institutional and system levels are needed to directly target the root causes of oppression and support resources that facilitate intersectional resilience. The Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) is a migratory songbird known for its intraspecies variation displayed in relation to morphology, song repertoires, and migration. Thus, studies focusing on juncos can reveal how migratory strategy may covary with other individual-scale factors and, therefore, identify the selective forces driving intraspecies variations throughout its distribution. We used Dark-eyed Junco hydrogen stable isotope feather values (δ²H) and implemented a Bayesian framework to infer the breeding and molting origin of migratory juncos captured on their winter grounds in Oklahoma, USA. We modeled the distribution of feather hydrogen stable isotope values as a function of five morphological variables including body mass and fat deposition measured in Oklahoma during the winter. We then investigated the trade-off between longer and more energetically costly migration strategies, in relation to diet preferences through carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis, from feather values. Dark-eyed Juncos wintering in south central U.S. likely originate from multiple breeding populations in northern U.S. and Canada. Body condition at the wintering ground (e.g., mass) had no effect on feather hydrogen stable isotope abundance. However, we found a positive correlation between nitrogen and hydrogen stable isotopes, suggesting that a trophic level shift toward insect consumption might occur in individuals migrating from southern latitudes. Increased insect-derived protein consumption might be explained by reduced fatty-acid reserves necessary to complete a shorter migratory journey. The exodus of swallows from communal nighttime roosts is often visible as an expanding ring-shaped pattern in weather radar data. The WSR-88D network operated by the National Weather Service archives more than 25 years of data across 143 stations in the contiguous US. However, access to information about the roosting behavior of swallows is limited by the cost of manual annotation of these scans.We develop an AI system to detect and track swallow roosts in weather radar data. Our model is based on the Faster R-CNN architecture and is customized to incorporate multiple spatial and temporal channels in volumetric radar scans using novel adaptor layers. We systematically study the impact of network architecture and input representation for this task. We incorporate our detection outputs into an AI-assisted system with an interface for human screening to collect research-grade data about roosting behavior. We deploy the system to collect information from 12 radar stations in the Great Lakes region of the US spanning 21 years.The addition of temporal information improves roost detection performance from 47.0% mean average precision to 54.7%. Temporal information helps the model recognize the expanding pattern of roosts and filter false positives due to rain and static structures. Our system allowed the annotation of 15,628 roost signatures with 64,620 single-frame detections in 612,786 radar scans with 183.6 total hours of human screening, or 1.08 seconds per radar scan.Our AI-assisted system provides research-quality roost data with far less human effort than manual annotation of radar scans. The data contains critical information about the phenology and population trends of swallows and martins, a declining group of aerial insectivores. Our successful deployment to collect historical data for 8% of the radar stations in the contiguous US lays the groundwork for continentscale analysis of swallow roosts, and provides a starting point for analysis of other family-specific phenomena in weather radar, such as bat roosts and mayfly hatches.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) created life-disrupting stressors that disproportionately burden disadvantaged communities with devastating impacts that extend far beyond the burden of the disease itself, including joblessness, housing and food insecurity, educational system upheavals, isolation due to disrupted relationships, worsened mental health and substance use and violence. Socially interconnected community members are resources whose efforts can be mobilised to improve COVID-19 coping within their social networks. This research examined the feasibility, acceptability, and reach of a social media-based peer influencer intervention for COVID-19 coping. Over a 9-month period in 2020, the project enrolled 1253 social influencers in Milwaukee-primarily ethnic and racial minorities-who regularly received and passed along messages to members of their social networks that provided advice about COVID-19 pandemic coping, economic survival, health protection, mental health, family needs, social justice and other impacts. Messages were shared by influencers with others over social media and also text messages, phone calls and conversations. Facebook social media tracking metrics objectively measured the community reach of social influencers' messages. Quantitative surveys and qualitative follow-up interviews with a subset of influencers also measured the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. Social media monitoring metrics showed that, by the end of the project, influencers' messages reached an average of 7978 unique individuals per week and had an average of 13,894 total views per week, with more than 140,000 total cumulative organic impressions. More than half of social influencers indicated that-beyond Facebook message sharing-they shared COVID-19 prevention, care, and coping messages with social network members in conversations, phone calls and text messages. Social influencers reported that they valued having the opportunity to help community members to cope with pandemic stressors by conveying practical COVID-19 coping advice.

This study examined psychosocial and health needs of persons living with HIV (PLWH) in Russia. The study combined baseline datasets from two social network samples of PLWH in St. Petersburg (N = 872). Samples were recruited between 2014 and 2018 by enrolling a PLWH seed who was either out-of-care or treatment nonadherent as well as network members surrounding each seed, assessing each participant's HIV care, transmission risk, substance use, and mental health characteristics. Objective: To assess the patterns of alcohol consumption by HIV-positive patients and to determine effective and ineffective strategies to reduce harm from alcohol consumption.Methods: A survey of 286 HIV-positive inpatient and outpatient patients was carried out as well as a qualitative study by focus group method of HIV-positive individuals living in St. Petersburg.Results: Almost the half of patients has demonstrated a dangerous level of alcohol consumption that affected adherence to treatment. Persons closest to HIV-positive patients have both positive and negative effect on the patterns of alcohol consumption.Conclusions: Alcohol consumption is a common behavioral practice among HIV-positive patients requiring periodic monitoring. Persons closest to a patient influence his/her behavior and can be used in planning of preventive measures in addictive pathology.

In the United States, HIV incidence is highest among Black men who have sex with men (MSM), but their PrEP uptake is low, especially outside the country’s largest cities and in part due to lack of normative support for using PrEP. This research pilot tested a social network-level intervention designed to increase PrEP awareness, benefit perception, and norms among Black MSM in Milwaukee, a Midwestern U.S. city with large racial disparities and low PrEP uptake. Five social networks (n=40 participants) of racial minority MSM were recruited in the community and assessed at baseline with measures of PrEP knowledge, interest, attitudes, and action taking. Persons most socially interconnected with others in each network were identified as leaders, and they attended a 7-session intervention that provided training to increase knowledge about PrEP and its benefits, address misconceptions and concerns about PrEP, endorse PrEP use as a symbol of pride and health, and deliver these messages to others in their social networks between sessions. At 3-month followup, all network members were re-administered assessment measures, and changes between baseline and followup were statistically analyzed. Significant increases over time were found in network members’ knowledge about PrEP together with improved PrEP attitudes, descriptive and subjective peer norms for PrEP, PrEP use self-efficacy, and willingness to use PrEP. Participants increased in frequency of conversations with friends about HIV and reported more discussions with health care providers about PrEP. The percentage of participants who reported using PrEP increased from 3% at baseline to 11% at followup. Larger-scale evaluations of this intervention are needed in populations with high HIV incidence but low PrEP use.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a promising part of HIV prevention, yet racial disparities in PrEP uptake persist. Evidence indicates that Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) face numerous social and structural barriers to PrEP, including stigma, medical mistrust, and exclusion from the healthcare system. However, little research has examined how social networks can influence PrEP use and help Black GBM overcome these identified barriers. To understand the influence of peers and social networks on Black GBM's perceptions of and decisions about PrEP use, we conducted in-depth interviews with 46 Black GBM in Milwaukee, WI and Cleveland, OH. Data were analyzed using multistage inductive coding and thematic content analysis, using MAXQDA software. Results indicate that participants' primary source of information on PrEP was other Black GBM in their communities. Peers and social networks served three primary functions with regard to PrEP: (1) filling informational gaps left by healthcare providers, (2) increasing trust of PrEP, and (3) reducing PrEP stigma. Participants described the "movers and shakers" in Black LGBT communities who have been influential in educating others and advocating for PrEP. Well-respected vocal advocates for PrEP have emerged in the Black LGBT community as PrEP champions who have successfully influenced young Black GBM's views on PrEP. Our results reveal the role social networks and peer groups can play in increasing PrEP use among Black GBM. Social network interventions may help overcome the stigma and mistrust that are contributing to PrEP disparities.

Russia has over 1.2 million HIV infections and Europe's highest HIV incidence. Although its HIV epidemic is intertwined with high alcohol consumption rates, the interaction between alcohol use and HIV care in Russia is understudied. Five hundred eighty-six HIV-positive persons were recruited using social network methods in St. Petersburg. Fifty-nine percent of males, and 45% of females, drank regularly. Thirty percent of alcohol users reported binge drinking (males: ≥ 5 drinks; females ≥ 4 drinks) in the past week. Alcohol use was associated with lower HIV care engagement and having a detectable viral load. Multivariate analyses showed that any alcohol consumption, number of alcohol drinks consumed, and having a binge drinking day in the past week were associated with male gender, use of illicit drugs, drug injection, smaller social network size, lower social supports, being unmarried, and reporting condomless intercourse with non-main partners. Interventions to improve HIV care in Russia must comprehensively address the use of alcohol and substances that interfere with care engagement.

Many migratory species have experienced substantial declines that resulted from rapid and massive expansions of human structures and activities, habitat alterations and climate change. Migrants are also recognized as an integral component of biodiversity and provide a multitude of services and disservices that are relevant to human agri-culture, economy and health. The plethora of recently published studies reflects the need for better fundamental knowledge on migrations and for better management of their ecological and human-relevant effects. Yet, where are we in providing answers to fundamental questions and societal challenges?Engaging a broad network of researchers worldwide, we used a horizon-scan approach to identify the most important challenges which need to be overcome in order to gain a fuller understanding of migration ecology, and which could be addressed using radar aeroecological and macroecological approaches. The top challenges include both long-standing and novel topics, ranging from fundamental information on migration routes and phenology, orientation and navigation strategies, and the multitude of effects migrants may have on resident communities, to societal challenges, such as protecting or preventing migrant services and disservices, and the conservation of migrants in the face of environmental changes. We outline these challenges, identify the urgency of addressing them and the primary stakeholders – researchers, policy makers and practitioners, or funders of research

Environmental change poses a devastating risk to human and environmental health. Rapid assessment of water conditions is necessary for monitoring, evaluating, and addressing this global health danger. Sentinels or biological monitors can be deployed in the field using minimal resources to detect water quality changes in real time, quickly and cheaply. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are ideal sentinels for detecting environmental changes due to their biomedical tool kit, widespread geographic distribution, and well-characterized phenotypic responses to environmental disturbances. Here, we demonstrate the utility of zebrafish sentinels by characterizing phenotypic differences in wild zebrafish between two field sites in India. Site 1 was a rural environment with flowing water, low-hypoxic conditions, minimal human-made debris, and high iron and lead concentrations. Site 2 was an urban environment with still water, hypoxic conditions, plastic pollution, and high arsenic, iron, and chromium concentrations. We found that zebrafish from Site 2 were smaller, more cohesive, and less active than Site 1 fish. We also found sexually dimorphic body shapes within the Site 2, but not the Site 1, population. Advancing zebrafish sentinel research and development will enable rapid detection, evaluation, and response to emerging global health threats.

Anthropogenic environmental change affects organisms by exposing them to enhanced sensory stimuli that can elicit novel behavioural responses. A pervasive feature of the built environment is artificial nocturnal lighting, and brightly lit urban areas can influence organism abundance, distribution and community structure within proximate landscapes. In some cases, the attractive or disorienting effect of artificial light at night can draw animals into highly unfavourable habitats, acting as a macroscale attractive ecological sink. Despite their significance for animal ecology, identifying cases of these phenomena and determining their effective scales and the number of organisms impacted remains challenging. Using an integrated set of remote-sensing observations, we quantify the effect of a large-scale attractive sink on nocturnal flights of an outbreak insect population in Las Vegas, USA. At the peak of the outbreak, over 45 million grasshoppers took flight across the region, with the greatest numbers concentrating over high-intensity city lighting. Patterns of dusk ascent from vegetated habitat toward urban areas suggest a daily pull toward a time-varying nocturnal attractive sink. The strength of this attractor varies with grasshopper density. These observations provide the first macroscale characterization of the effects of nocturnal urban lighting on the behaviour of regional insect populations and demonstrate the link between insect perception of the built environment and resulting changes in spatial and movement ecology. As human-induced environmental change continues to affect insect populations, understanding the impacts of nocturnal light on insect behaviour and fitness will be vital to developing robust large-scale management and conservation strategies.

Academia is an arena where practitioners from industry are integrated to theoreticians. Such alliance has been intensified by the industry 4.0 (I4) age from which these counterparts are seeking to merge efforts towards society 5.0 (S5), enabling next generations to easily accept novelties and changes in well-established operations, process-of-work, behaviours, etc. In educational centres, such a pace into the I4-S5 state pushes new ways of adopting (or adapting current) sharing of work among peers since this may potentially become a tool for an efficient process-of-research. Thus, we particularly cover postgraduate centres with part-time (PT) and full-time (FT) students in the fields of process system engineering (PSE) and we are widely relying on computer aided process engineering (CAPE) tools, algorithms, software, packages, etc. A collaborative research and development of PSE-CAPE systems may a) involve PT and FT postgraduates in multi-disciplinary fields of science and engineering and b) go across physics, math, and technologies to include social sciences, public policies, and beyond. The proposition is to analyse PT-FT synergies considering their experiences, accessibility of data to validate models, viability to handle CAPE tools, etc. An example of collaboration between PT and FT students, involving a university, a research center, a consulting company, and a medical corporation, is highlighted to optimise healthcare treatment systems for social progress and sustainable development amid COVID-19.
