Abstract

Epithelial cells that line the gut secrete complex glycoproteins that form a mucus layer to protect the gut wall from enteric pathogens. Here, the authors provide a comprehensive characterisation of endo-acting glycoside hydrolases expressed by mucin-degrading members of the microbiome that are able to cleave the O-glycan chains of a range of different animal and human mucins.

Abstract

Since the 1950s bladder reconstruction by enterocystoplasty has replaced the need to use urinary diversion as a means of treating a wide range of conditions. This form of corrective surgery has improved the quality of life for the patient and provided them with a urinary tract that resembles that of a normal lower urinary tract as closely as possible. In most cases, patients are able to void without the use of clean intermittent selfcatheterisation (ISC). The type of bowel tissue used to create a ‘new’ bladder and the procedure undertaken, are dictated by the underlying cause of the bladder dysfunction. In brief three types of enterocystoplasty are currently implemented, 1) augmentation (enlargement by the addition of tissue, none of the existing bladder wall is removed), 2) substitution (partial bladder resection before reconstruction) and 3) orthotopic bladder replacement (entire bladder, and possibly the urethra and sphincter mechanisms are replaced by refashioned bowel segments).
