Anomalias de intersexo são relatadas em diversas espécies animais. Tal fato resulta de falhas durante o desenvolvimento embrionário e fetal, originando animais hermafroditas verdadeiros e pseudo-hermafroditas. Com este trabalho objetivou-se relatar um caso de pseudo- hermafroditismo masculino em caprino ocorrido no município de Manaus – AM. Devido ao crescimento da pecuária no relacionada ao segmento correspondente a criação de caprinos, torna-se essencial para o sucesso da atividade que falhas no manejo reprodutivo sejam corrigidas haja visto que a ocorrência de intersexualidade em caprinos está relacionada principalmente ao caráter mocho dos animais ligados a fatores hereditários. O presente trabalho relata o caso de um caprino mocho, que apresentava- se ao exame clínico, morfologicamente como sendo do sexo feminino, com presença de estrutura vulvar anormal. Ao realizar o estudo anatômico, através da dissecação das estruturas, observou-se órgãos que se assemelhavam tanto aos femininos quanto aos masculinos, com presença de testículos intra-abdominal e órgão apresentando-se semelhante ao útero. Para a correta identificação destes órgãos efetuaram-se estudos histológicos, com a identificação correta e características de cada segmento analisado. De acordo com as estruturas encontradas foi possível diagnosticar o animal como tratando-se de um caso de pseudo-hermafroditismo masculino.

Background Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease that affects humans and warm-blooded animals. This study describes an outbreak of toxoplasmosis in howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) and survival of capuchins (Sapajus apella), under the same environmental conditions. Methods Howler monkeys were submitted to post-mortem examination. Tissue samples were processed to histopathology and immunohistochemistry to detect lesions and tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii. Tissue samples were also frozen and submitted to PCR and genotyping of T. gondii. Results Typical lesions were observed in several organs including the liver, lymph node, and brain, with intralesional cysts and tachyzoites of T. gondii demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. T. gondii genomic sequences were amplified by PCR, and genotyping characterized the same T. gondii clone in all howler monkeys. Conclusions Our results support the notion that some species of neotropical primates are highly susceptible to toxoplasmosis and the hypothesis that capuchins (S. apella) may be resistant.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A patologia digital tem se tornado um campo próspero nos últimos tempos em razão da introdução no mercado de scanners capazes de gerar imagens digitais de lâminas de vidro com ótima resolução. A patologia digital vem sendo utilizada em laboratórios de diagnósticos clínicos e também na área acadêmica. Métodos de validação já estão disponíveis para avaliar o impacto da patologia digital quando usada como método de diagnóstico primário. Estudos comparando diagnósticos dados em lâminas físicas e digitais apresentam concordância acima de 85%, porém os resultados são bastante variados entre os trabalhos. O trabalho teve como objetivo comparar a habilidade diagnóstica de estudantes e patologistas veterinários na leitura de lâminas histopatológicas digitais e físicas e, com isso, demonstrar aspectos positivos e negativos da patologia digital na formação e atuação de estudantes e profissionais no diagnóstico histopatológico. Os dados encontrados nesse trabalho mostram uma concordância intraexaminador média de 84,87%, além de boa precisão diagnóstica. Uma autoavaliação da experiência vivenciada com a patologia digital foi feita com os examinadores e, apesar da maior familiaridade com a lâmina física, todos foram a favor do uso da patologia digital no ensino. Espera-se que as aplicações e o uso de lâminas digitais no ensino, pesquisa e principalmente na área de diagnóstico aumentem acentuadamente na próxima década. Cabe as instituições acadêmicas se atentarem para importância da implementação da patologia digital no ensino e no treinamento dos profissionais que irão atuar em um mercado de patologia veterinária cada vez mais digital.

Cardiac disease is of importance in captive chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) health. Here we report an eosinophilic and necrotizing myocarditis in a 17-y-old chimpanzee with no previous history of cardiac disease that progressed to death within 48 h. Toxic and infectious causes were ruled out. The chimpanzee had eosinophilia at different occasions in previous years. The animal had a severe, diffuse, and acute monophasic necrotizing myocarditis, with a moderate lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate that was rich in eosinophils. Ante- and postmortem investigations are compatible with an unusual eosinophilic myocarditis with clinical evolution and morphology comparable with human eosinophilic myocarditis secondary to hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Identification of macroscopic injures in japanese quail carcasses during the slaughter process is critical to ensure the high quality of the final product, meat, and decrease the risk of zoonotic diseases. Thus, this study aimed to describe the main pathological changes found in japanese quail in conditions for slaughter process. For this, 31 individuals were sampled at two distinct farms situated in the rural zone of Manaus/AM, all of them with one years old, healthy and in slaughter condition. All analyses were performed in the Laboratory of Triatominae, Phlebotominae and Nidicola fauna of the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA), Manaus/AM. “Ante mortem” and “post mortem” inspection were performed in all carcass. Externally, there was only one specimen showed cachexy and apathy. On internal examination, there were changes in the lungs of 9,5% of specimens, it was marked by hyperemia and fibrin exudate in the apical lobes surface. Ulcerations in the proventriculus and ventriculu mucosal were reported in the 9,6% of analyzed birds. Moreover, changes in the small intestine and caecum area were reported respectively in the 45,1% (14) and 74,1 (23) of birds. The most common intestinal disorders were gas accumulation associated with distension of the loops, congested mucosal, and hemorrhagic fluid or yellow colored mucus and petechiae in serous. Three individual showed mucus fluid, dark colored, similar to coffe grounds, in the region of the jejunum, ileum and cecum. Cecum's area of these birds presented one or more species of a parasite nematodes, cestoda and protozoa. 87% (27) of analyzed livers showed a pale aspect, crumbly texture and multifocal areas, units or bilobar, yellowish or greenish gray colored, showed a diameter of 0,2-1,6 cm. In 25,92% of these livers were found scar punctate injures, which showed a grayish or blackish color circumscribed by a white halo and petechiae. Ovarian follicles were stunted and two quail oviduct presented fibrinous exudate in serous, while the light of the oviduct found partially obliterated by whitish exudate and caseous mass in the mucosa below the exudate had multiple cysts filled with fluid slightly opaque. Some pathological changes described for C. japonica are simliar to those described for laying hens, however, have also been described macroscopic particular injuries to this species, which suggests further research on this kind of growing economic importance.

Numerous monofluoroacetate (MFA)-containing plants in Brazil cause sudden death syndrome precipitated by exercise in livestock, which is characterized by loss of balance, ataxia, labored breathing, muscle tremors, and recumbence leading to death. Four species of Palicourea collected at six farms were tested for the presence of MFA and their toxicity to rabbits. Palicourea longiflora and Palicourea barraensis contained MFA and caused sudden death in the rabbits. Palicourea croceoides and Palicourea nitidella did not contain MFA and were not toxic to rabbits. P. longiflora and P. barraensis were collected at three farms with a history of sudden death in their cattle. This is the first report of toxicity in regard to these two species.

The health monitoring and management systems of coturniculture can be deemed to be in a developmental phase when compared to the poultry industry. Studies regarding taxonomy and parasitic biology in quails (Coturnix japonica) has not been well conducted in Brazil. Most of the information is available from the autopsy case reports, in many ways the parasitic fauna of quails is still unknown. The aim of this study was to conduct a parasitological research in quails in order to contribute to ameliorate this situation. 31 quails, which were 12 months old, were used for the study. Their carcasses and viscera were sent to the Laboratory of Entomology and Tropical Diseases, INPA, Manaus/AM. The circulatory, nervous, respiratory, digestive and reproductive systems of these were studied separately. No blood parasites were found, however, nine species of endoparasites were registered which were distributed among the classes Cestoda, Nematoda and Protozoa. The helminths were distributed in the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum and oviduct. The cecum was found to be the most parasitized organ and contained a wide range of parasites having three species of protozoa and three species of nematodes. Six morphotypes of Eutrichomastix globosus were recorded, and some morphotypes were hyperparasitized with sporangia Sphaerita sp. in the cytoplasm. A large number of parasites were recorded in this study, as well as the protozoan Blastocystis hominis was first being observed for quail. © 2018 Colegio Brasileiro de Patologia Animal.
