We present an in-depth study of a large and long duration ($>$1.3 days) X-ray flare observed on an RS CVn type eclipsing binary system SZ Psc using observations from Swift observatory. In the 0.35$-$10 keV energy band, the peak luminosity is estimated to be 4.2$\times$10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The quiescent corona of SZ Psc was observed $\sim$5.67 d after the flare using Swift observatory, and also $\sim$1.4 yr after the flare using the XMM-Newton satellite. The quiescent corona is found to consist of three temperature plasma: 4, 13, and 48 MK. High-resolution X-ray spectral analysis of the quiescent corona of SZ Psc suggests that the high first ionization potential (FIP) elements are more abundant than the low-FIP elements. The time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the flare shows a significant variation in the flare temperature, emission measure, and abundance. The peak values of temperature, emission measure, and abundances during the flare are estimated to be 199$\pm$11 MK, 2.13$\pm$0.05 $\times 10^{56}$ cm$^{-3}$, 0.66$\pm$0.09 Z$_{\odot}$, respectively. Using the hydrodynamic loop modeling, we derive the loop length of the flare as 6.3$\pm$0.5 $\times 10^{11}$ cm, whereas the loop pressure and density at the flare peak are derived to be 3.5$\pm$0.7 $\times 10^{3}$ dyne cm$^{-2}$ and 8$\pm$2 $\times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The total magnetic field to produce the flare is estimated to be 490$\pm$60 G. We present a study on the detailed elemental abundances of newly identified bright very metal-poor stars with the detection of lithium, initially observed as part of the SDSS/MARVELS pre-survey. These stars were selected for high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up as part of the HESP-GOMPA survey. In this work, we discuss the Li abundances detected for several stars in the survey, which include main-sequence stars, subgiants, and red giants. Different classes of stars are found to exhibit very similar distributions of Li, which point towards a common origin. We derive a scaling relation for the depletion of Li as a function of temperature for giants and main-sequence stars; the majority of the samples from the literature were found to fall within 1sigma (0.19 and 0.12 dex/K for giants and dwarfs respectively) of this relationship. We also report the existence of a slope of the Li abundances as a function of distances from the Galactic plane, indicating mixed stellar populations. Most Li-rich stars are found to be in or close to the galactic plane. Along with Li, we have derived detailed abundances for C, odd-Z, alpha-, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements for each star. We have also used astrometric parameters from Gaia-EDR3 to complement our study, and derived kinematics to differentiate between the motions of the stars; those formed in situ and accreted. The stellar population of the Spite plateau, including additional stars from the literature, is found to have significant contributions from stars formed in situ and through accretion. The orbits for the program stars have also been derived and studied for a period of 5 Gyr backward in time., 19 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We have investigated the grain alignment and dust properties towards the direction of the cluster NGC 2345 using the multi-band optical polarimetric observations. For the majority of the stars, the observed polarization is found to be due to the interstellar medium with average values of maximum polarization and wavelength corresponding to it as 1.55% and 0.58 $\mu m$, respectively. This reveals a similar size distribution of dust grains to that in the general interstellar medium in the direction of NGC 2345. Alteration of dust properties near the distance of 1.2 kpc towards the direction of NGC 2345 has been noticed. The dust grains located beyond this distance are found to be aligned with the Galactic magnetic field, whereas a dispersion in orientation of the dust grains lying in the foreground of this distance is found. Polarizing efficiency of grains in this direction is found to be close to the average efficiency for our Galaxy. The decreased grain size along with the increased polarizing efficiency towards the core region of the cluster indicates the local radiation field is higher within the cluster which is responsible for the increased alignment efficiency of small grains. The wavelength of maximum polarization (associated with the average size of aligned grains) is also found to increase with extinction and reduces with the increase in polarizing efficiency, which can be explained by the radiative torque alignment mechanism., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. We present a comprehensive study of three large long-duration flares detected on an active M-dwarf binary EQ Peg using the Soft X-Ray Telescope of the AstroSat observatory. The peak X-ray luminosities of the flares in the 0.3 - 7 keV band are found to be within ~5 - 10 x 10^{30} erg s^{-1}. The e-folding rise- and decay-times of the flares are derived to be in the range of 3.4 - 11 and 1.6 - 24 ks, respectively. Spectral analysis indicates the presence of three temperature corona with the first two plasma temperatures remain constant during all the flares and the post-flare observation at ~3 and ~9 MK. The flare temperature peaked at 26, 16, and 17 MK, which are 2, 1.3, and 1.4 times more than the minimum value, respectively. The peak emission measures are found to be 3.9 - 7.1 x 10^{53} cm^{-3}, whereas the abundances peaked at 0.16-0.26 times the solar abundances. Using quasi-static loop modeling, we derive loop-lengths for all the flares as 2.5+/-0.5 x 10^{11}, 2.0+/-0.5 x 10^{11}, and 2.5+/-0.9 x 10^{11} cm, respectively. The density of the flaring plasma is estimated to be 4.2+/-0.8 x 10^{10}, 3.0+/-0.7 x 10^{10}, 2.2+/-0.8 x 10^{10} cm^{-3) for flares F1, F2, and F3, respectively. We have carried out a long term infrared and X-ray investigation of the colliding wind binary WR 125 (WC7+O9III). The source was monitored using AstroSat-Soft X-ray Telescope and TIRCAM2 mounted at the back of 3.6 m Devasthal Optical Telescope. WR 125 appeared brighter in near infra-red K-band during the years 2017-2021 which is attributed to another episode of dust formation similar to the one reported during the likely periastron passage at the beginning of the 1990s. This is further supported by enhanced emission observed in W1 and W2 bands of WISE from 2018-19. By combining archival X-ray data sets with our new measurements, long-term variations have been noticed. The source reaches a lower emission state in June 2020 (close to the recent infrared maximum) which could be due to enhanced absorption of X-rays produced in the colliding wind region by the WC stellar wind close to the periastron in an eccentric orbit. The time interval between the previous and latest X-ray low states may indicate an orbital period of 28-29 years, in fair agreement with the recurrence time of episodic dust production. We also discuss published radio measurements in the context of a common picture based on a long period binary scenario. We present the first detailed X-ray study and simultaneous optical observations of the active fast rotating star FR Cnc. The X-ray spectra are found to be explained by two-temperature plasma model with temperature of cool and hot components of 0.34 and 1.1 keV, respectively. The X-ray light curve in the 0.5–2.0 keV energy band is found to be rotationally modulated with the degree of rotational modulation of $$\sim$$ 17%. We have also found that the X-ray light curve is anti-correlated with the optical light and colour curves in the sense that maximum X-ray light corresponds to minimum optical light and cooler region on the surface of FR Cnc. The X-ray luminosity of FR Cnc is found to be almost consistent in the last 30 years with an average value of $$4.85\times 10^{29}$$ erg $$\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ in the 0.5–2.0 keV energy band.

Using the data obtained fromKeplersatellite, we have analyzed an F-type ultra-fast rotator KIC 6791060. We derive a rotational period of 0.34365±0.00004 d. Multiple periodicity with a period separation of ~0.00016 d was detected, which appears to be a result of the relative velocity between the multiple spot-groups in different stellar latitudes due to the surface differential rotation. Modeling of the surface inhomogeneities using the light curve of 3899 epochs shows the evidence of single active longitude region. The active longitude is found to drift along the longitude at a rate similar to the detected period separation of the F-type star. The surface coverage of cool spots is found to be in the range of ~0.07–0.44%. The low value of the spottedness can be interpreted probably due to the thinner convection zone on the F-type star.

An X-ray study of a deeply embedded Wolf-Rayet star WR 121a has been carried out using long-term (spanning over ~12 years) archival observations from Chandra and XMM-Newton. For the first time, a periodic variation with a period of 4.1 days has been detected in the X-ray light curve of WR 121a. No companion is seen in a merged and exposure corrected Chandra X-ray image of WR 121a as shown in the other previous observations in J-band. The X-ray spectrum of WR 121a has been well-explained by a thermal plasma emission model with temperatures of 0.98+/-0.34 keV and 3.55+/-0.69 keV for the cool and hot components, respectively and non-solar abundances. The present study indicates that WR121a is one of the X-ray bright massive binaries with an X-ray luminosity of ~10^34 erg/s, which can be explained by an active wind collision between its components. The phase-locked modulations have been seen in the flux variation of WR 121a where the flux is increased by a factor of ~1.6 from minimum to maximum in 0.3-10.0 keV energy band. These variations could be caused by an eclipse of the wind collision region by the secondary star in a binary orbit. The winds of both components of WR 121a appear to be radiative. We report the results of photometric observations of a number of magnetic white dwarfs in order to search for photometric variability in these stars. These V-band observations revealed significant variability in the classical highly magnetized white dwarf GRW+70◦8247 with a likely period from several days to several dozen days and a half-amplitude of about 0. m 04. Our observations also revealed the variability of the well-known white dwarf GD229. The half amplitude of its photometric variability is equal to about 0. m 005, and the likely period of this degenerate star lies in the 10–20 day interval. This variability is most likely due to the rotation of the stars considered.We also discuss the peculiarities of the photometric variability in a number of other white dwarfs. We present the updated “magnetic field–rotation period” diagram for the white dwarfs.

Multi-band linear polarimetric observations of 125 stars in the region of the cluster NGC 1817 have been carried out intending to study properties of interstellar dust and grains in that direction. The polarization is found to be wavelength-dependent, being maximum in the V band with an average value of 0.95%. The foreground interstellar dust grains appear to be the main source of linear polarization of starlight toward the direction of NGC 1817. The average value of the position angle in the V band of 119.2 degree is found to be less than the direction of the Galactic parallel in the region, indicating that the dust grains in the direction are probably not yet relaxed. Spatial distribution of dust appears to be more diverse in the coronal region than the core region of the cluster. The maximum value of the degree of polarization is estimated to be 0.93% for members of the cluster using the Serkowski relation. The average value of wavelength corresponding to the maximum polarization of 0.54+/-0.02 micron indicates that the size distribution of dust grains in the line of sight is similar to that of the general interstellar medium. Several variable stars in the cluster were also observed for polarimetrically and pulsating variables appear to have a slightly lower value of polarization from other nonvariable member stars of the cluster. There are indications of the existence of dust layers existence in front of those clusters which are located close to galactic plane while for clusters located away from galactic plane no major dust layers are observed., Comment: Accepted for the publication in AJ

We present B-, V-, R-, and I-bands linear polarimetric observations of 73 stars in the direction of open star cluster Casado Alessi 1 (hereafter Alessi 1). We aim to use polarimetry as a tool to investigate the properties and distribution of dust grains toward the direction of the cluster. The polarimetric observations were carried out using the ARIES IMaging POLarimeter mounted at the 104 cm telescope of ARIES, Nainital (India). Using the Gaia photometric data the age and distance of the cluster are estimated to be $0.8\pm0.1$ Gyr and $673\pm98$ pc, respectively. A total of 66 stars with a 26 arcmin radius from the cluster are identified as members of the cluster using the astrometric approach. Out of these 66 members, 15 stars were observed polarimetrically and found to have the same value of polarization. The majority of the stars in the region follow the general law of the polarization for the interstellar medium, indicating that polarization toward the cluster Alessi 1 is dominated by foreground dust grains. The average values of the maximum polarization ($P_{max}$) and the wavelength corresponding to the maximum polarization ($\lambda_{max}$) toward the cluster are found to be $0.83\pm0.03$% and $0.59\pm0.04$ $\mu$m, respectively. We present analyses of archival X-ray data obtained from the XMM-Newton satellite and optical photometric data obtained from 1 m class telescopes of ARIES, Nainital of a magnetic cataclysmic variable (MCV) Paloma. Two persistent periods at 156 $\pm$ 1 minutes and 130 $\pm$ 1 minutes are present in the X-ray data, which we interpret as the orbital and spin periods, respectively. These periods are similar to those obtained from the previous as well as new optical photometric observations. The soft-X-ray excess seen in the X-ray spectrum of Paloma and the averaged X-ray spectra are well fitted by two-temperature plasma models with temperatures of 0.10$_{-0.01}^{+0.02}$ and 13.0$_{-0.5}^{+0.5}$ keV with an Fe K$\alpha$ line and an absorbing column density of 4.6 $\times$ 10^{22} cm^{-2}. This material partially covers 60 $\pm$ 2 % of the X-ray source. We also present the orbital and spin-phase-resolved spectroscopy of Paloma in the $0.3 - 10.0$ keV energy band and find that the X-ray spectral parameters show orbital and spin-phase dependencies. We analyse the light curve in the R band of the blazar OJ287, gathered during the 2015/2016 observing season. We did a search for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) using several methods over a wide range of timescales. No statistically significant periods were found in the high-frequency domain both in the ground-based data and in Kepler observations. In the longer-period domain, the Lomb–Scargle periodogram revealed several peaks above the 99% significance level. The longest one—about 95 days—corresponds to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) period of the more massive black hole. The 43-day period could be an alias, or it can be attributed to accretion in the form of a two-armed spiral wave.

We analyse the light curve in the R-band gathered during the 2015/16 observing season of OJ287. We did a search for QPOs using several methods in wide time domain. No statistically significant periods were found in the high frequency domain both in the ground data and also in K2 observations. In the longer periods domain the Lomb-Scargle periodogram revealed several peaks above the 99\% significance level. The longest one, about 95-day, corresponds to the ISCO period of the more massive SMBH. The 43-day period could be an alias or can be attributed to accretion in the form of two armed spiral wave.

We present recent polarimetric results of magnetically active late-type dwarfs. The polarization in these stars is found to be wavelength dependent, decreasing towards the longer wavelength. The average values of degree of polarization in these active dwarfs are found to be 0.16+/-0.01, 0.080+/-0.006, 0.056+/-0.004 and 0.042+/-0.003 per cent in B, V, R, and I bands, respectively. Present results indicate that polarization in the majority of active dwarfs are primarily due to sum of the polarization by magnetic intensification and scattering. However, supplementary sources of the polarization are also found to be present in some active stars. The correlations between the degree of polarization and various activity parameters like Rossby number, chromospheric activity indicator and coronal activity indicator are found to be stronger in B band and weaker in I band., MNRAS in press, 11 pages, 8 figures, 4 tabbles

We present an analysis of long-term X-ray and optical observations of the Wolf-Rayet binary WR 25. Using archival data from observations with the XMM-Newton and the Swift observatories spanning over ~10 yr, we show that WR 25 is a periodic variable in X-rays with a period of $208 \pm 3$ days. X-ray light curves in the 0.5-10.0 keV energy band show phase-locked variability, where the flux increased by a factor of ~2 from minimum to maximum, being maximum near periastron passage. The light curve in the soft energy band (0.5-2.0 keV) shows two minima indicating the presence of two eclipses. However, the light curve in the hard energy band (2.0-10.0 keV) shows only one minimum during the apastron passage. The X-ray spectra of WR 25 were explained by a two-temperature plasma model. Both the cool and the hot plasmas were constant at 0.628+/-0.008 and 2.75+/-0.06 keV throughout an orbital cycle, where the cooler plasma could be due to the small scale shocks in a radiation-driven outflow and the high temperature plasma could be due to the collision of winds. The column density varied with the orbital phase and was found to be maximum after the periastron passage, when the WN star is in front of the O star. The abundances of WR 25 were found to be non-solar. Optical V-band data of WR 25 also show the phase-locked variability, being at maximum near periastron passage. The results based on the present analysis indicate that WR 25 is a colliding wind binary where the presence of soft X-rays is attributed to individual components; however, hard X-rays are due to the collision of winds., 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, ApJ

Using XMM-Newton observation, we investigate properties of a flare from the very active and poorly known stellar system 47 Cas. The luminosity at the peak of the flare was found to be 3.54x10^30 erg/s, which is ~2 times more than that at a quiescent state. The quiescent state corona of 47 Cas was represented by two temperature plasma: 3.7 and 11.0 MK. The time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the flare showed the variable nature of the temperature, the emission measure, and the abundance. The maximum temperature during the flare was found to be 72.8 MK. We inferred the length of a flaring loop to be 3.3x10^10 cm using a hydrodynamic loop model. Using the RGS spectra, the density during the flare was found to be 4.0x10^10 cm^-3. Here we present the study of FR Cnc, a young, active and spotted star. We performed analysis of ASAS-3 (The All Sky Automated Survey) data for the years 2002-2008 and amended the value of the rotational period to be 0.826518 d. The amplitude of photometric variations decreased abruptly in the year 2005, while the mean brightness remained the same, which was interpreted as a quick redistribution of spots. BVRc and Ic broad band photometric calibration was performed for 166 stars in FR Cnc vicinity. The photometry at Terskol Observatory shows two brightening episodes, one of which occurred at the same phase as the flare of 2006 November 23. Polarimetric BVR observations indicate the probable presence of a supplementary source of polarization. We monitored FR Cnc spectroscopically during the years 2004-2008. We concluded that the RV changes cannot be explained by the binary nature of FR Cnc. We determined the spectral type of FR Cnc as K7V. Calculated galactic space-velocity components (U, V, W) indicate that FR Cnc belongs to the young disc population and might also belong to the IC 2391 moving group. Based on LiI 6707.8 measurement, we estimated the age of FR Cnc to be between 10-120 Myr. Doppler Tomography was applied to create a starspot image of FR Cnc. We optimized the goodness of fit to the deconvolved profiles for axial inclination, equivalent width and v sin i, finding v sin i=46.2 km s^-1 and i=55 degrees. The starspot distribution of FR Cnc is also of interest since it is one of the latest spectral types to have been imaged. No polar spot was detected on FR Cnc.

We present a multiwavelength study of the NGC 281 complex which contains the young cluster IC 1590 at the center, using deep wide-field optical UBVI_c photometry, slitless spectroscopy along with archival data sets in the near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray. The extent of IC 1590 is estimated to be ~6.5 pc. The cluster region shows a relatively small amount of differential reddening. We present the $UBVR_cI_c$ broad band optical photometry of the Type Ic supernova SN 2002ap obtained during 2002 February 06 -- March 23 in the early decline phases and also later on 2002 15 August. Combining these data with the published ones, the general light curve development is studied. The time and luminosity of the peak brightness and the peak width are estimated. There is a flattening in the optical light curve about 30 days after the $B$ maximum. The flux decline rates before flattening are 0.127$\pm$0.005, 0.082$\pm$0.001, 0.074$\pm$0.001, 0.062$\pm$0.001 and 0.040$\pm$0.001 mag day$^{-1}$ in $U$, $B$, $V$, $R_c$ and $I_c$ passbands respectively, while the corresponding values after flattening are about 0.02 mag day$^{-1}$ in all the passbands. The maximum brightness of SN 2002ap $M_V = - 17.2$ mag, is comparable to that of the type Ic 1997ef, but fainter than that of the type Ic hypernova SN 1998bw. The peak luminosity indicates an ejection of $\sim$ 0.06 M$_{\odot}$ ${}^{56}$Ni mass. We also present low-resolution optical spectra obtained during the early phases. The SiII absorption minimum indicates that the photospheric velocity decreased from $\sim$ 21,360 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$ 10,740 km s$^{-1}$ during a period of $\sim$ 6 days., 7 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to MNRAS
