Diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton plays a vital role in biological carbon pump and food web interactions. However, there is considerable debate about the DVM of zooplankton in response to environmental changes in the Arctic Ocean. We investigated DVM behavior in the key Arctic copepods Calanus glacialis, Calanus hyperboreus, and Metridia longa following the midnight sun period in the East Siberian continental margin region. The two Calanus species showed non-DVM behaviors, whereas M. longa showed a typical DVM pattern consistent with the solar radiation cycle. Additionally, these species showed different vertical distributions. Calanus glacialis was distributed at depths above 20 m in the warm fresh water, where the highest density gradient was observed. Calanus hyperboreus was distributed at depths between 30 and 55 m in the cold salty water, where a high contribution of micro phytoplankton and the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer were observed. M. longa was found across a broader range of temperature and salinity than both Calanus species, and it was distributed in the upper water column, where the SCM layer was observed at night and at depths between 100 and 135 m in the daytime. These results imply that M. longa can be well adapted to the changing Arctic Ocean environment, where sea ice loss and ocean warming are ongoing, whereas C. hyperboreus can be the most vulnerable to these changes. These findings provide important information for understanding variations in the vertical distributions of key copepod species in the rapidly changing Arctic marine environment.

This study proposes a human authentication framework based on electrocardiogram signals that are robust to dynamic cardiac morphological conditions. The proposed method incorporates a stationary wavelet transform, an infinite feature selection, and a linear discriminant analysis. Evaluation experiments were conducted under three modulated situations: temporal variation, postural variation, and heart rate variation when exercising. Compared with three state-of-the-art methods, the performance of the proposed method was shown to be better overall, with an equal error rate (EER) of 1.48% under time-varying situations, 1.74% under posture changes, and 5.47% after exercise. These results indicate that the proposed method achieves a highly increased performance compared with state-of-the-art techniques. Further evaluation of the identification performance of the proposed method on two public databases shows that it performs better than previously proposed methods.

The Bering Strait is the only gateway to the Chukchi Sea from the Pacific Ocean and is a major route of Pacific water inflow. We recently investigated the occurrence of Pacific copepod species along with the warming of the Chukchi Sea and sought to identify the cause of the mass occurrence these copepods through an analysis of the water masses flowing through the Bering Strait. Zooplankton and Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) data collection was conducted in the Chukchi Sea and Bering Strait from 2014 to 2016. In addition, mooring systems installed in the Bering Strait were analyzed to obtain water temperature and salinity data during summer to understand the properties of the water masses. In 2015, a high abundance of Pacific copepod species (Eucalanus bungii, Metridia pacifica, and Neocalanus spp.) was observed in Bering Summer Water (BSW), which was relatively warm compared to measurements obtained from 2014 to 2016. As further confirmation, our results were consistent with 2007, 2009, and 2012 data, which showed that the abundance of Pacific copepod species was proportional to the temperature of the BSW entering the Chukchi Sea. In conclusion, we reconfirmed that Pacific copepod species are entering the Chukchi Sea along with BSW, and we newly discovered that their high abundance coincided with the relatively warm BSW, instead of other water masses. These findings suggest that the inflow of the high-temperature BSW (>3°C) plays an important role in the mass occurrence of Pacific copepod species in the southern Chukchi Sea.

In polar ecology, zooplankton diets and survival rates vary according to the seasonality of solar radiation and oceanographic conditions. Each zooplankton species has evolved feeding strategies to survive in the diet-limited conditions of the “polar night.” Many zooplankton studies have reported seasonal adaptations in feeding activity during polar night based on their trophic niches. Nitrogen isotope analysis of amino acids has provided improved accuracy in estimates of trophic position (TP) in various marine species. In this study, field work was conducted in Kongsfjorden before (October 2017) and after polar night (April 2018). As representative zooplankton, an amphipod (Themisto abyssorum), euphausids (Meganycitiphanes norvegica and Thysanoessa sp.), a chaetognath (Parasagitta elegans), and copepods (Calanus spp. and Oithona similis) were collected. trophic position values of each taxon were estimated using the nitrogen isotope ratio of glutamic acid (δ15NGlu) and phenylalanine (δ15NPhe). Results showed that TP values of P. elegans were relatively constant, averaging 3.2 in both seasons, likely due to continuous feeding activity during polar night. Trophic position values were also constant for Calanus spp., ranging 2.5–3.0 in both seasons, due to their ability to utilize stored high-energy wax. In contrast, average TP values for O. similis, an omnivorous zooplankton, were 2.9 in October and 2.3 the following April. Trophic position values for O. similis before polar night can be attributed to the relatively high availability of algae during longer periods of daylight. We found that TP variation in zooplankton before and after polar night differed according to feeding activities in diet-restricted circumstances.

Background Narcolepsy is marked by pathologic symptoms including excessive daytime drowsiness and lethargy, even with sufficient nocturnal sleep. There are two types of narcolepsy: type 1 (with cataplexy) and type 2 (without cataplexy). Unlike type 1, for which hypocretin is a biomarker, type 2 narcolepsy has no adequate biomarker to identify the causality of narcoleptic phenomenon. Therefore, we aimed to establish new biomarkers for narcolepsy using the body's systemic networks. Method Thirty participants (15 with type 2 narcolepsy, 15 healthy controls) were included. We used the time delay stability (TDS) method to examine temporal information and determine relationships among multiple signals. We quantified and analyzed the network connectivity of nine biosignals (brainwaves, cardiac and respiratory information, muscle and eye movements) during nocturnal sleep. In particular, we focused on the differences in network connectivity between groups according to sleep stages and investigated whether the differences could be potential biomarkers to classify both groups by using a support vector machine. Result In rapid eye movement sleep, the narcolepsy group displayed more connections than the control group (narcolepsy connections: 24.47 ± 2.87, control connections: 21.34 ± 3.49; p = 0.022). The differences were observed in movement and cardiac activity. The performance of the classifier based on connectivity differences was a 0.93 for sensitivity, specificity and accuracy, respectively. Conclusion Network connectivity with the TDS method may be used as a biomarker to identify differences in the systemic networks of patients with narcolepsy type 2 and healthy controls.

We developed a new type of electroencephalogram (EEG) headset system with comb-shaped electrodes that enables the wearer to quickly don and utilize it in daily life. Two models that can measure EEG signals using up to eight channels have been implemented. The electrodes implemented in the headsets are similar to a comb and are placed quickly by wiping the hair (as done with a comb) using the headset. To verify this headset system, donning time was measured and three brain computer interface (BCI) application experiments were conducted. Alpha rhythm-based, steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based, and auditory steady state response (ASSR)-based BCI systems were adopted for the validation experiments. Four subjects participated and ten trials were repeated in the donning experiment. The results of the validation experiments show that reliable EEG signal measurement is possible immediately after donning the headsets without any preparation. It took approximately 10 s for healthy subjects to don the headsets, including an earclip with reference and ground electrodes. The results of alpha rhythm-based BCI showed 100% accuracy. Furthermore, the results of SSVEP-based and ASSR-based BCI experiments indicate that performance is sufficient for BCI applications, 95.7% and 76.0% accuracies were obtained, respectively. The results of BCI paradigm experiments indicate that the new headset type is feasible for various BCI applications.

Background Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this systematic review was to enhance diagnostic approaches and summarize therapeutic strategies in the management of AI in patients with systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Methods A literature search of PubMed and Medline databases was performed and 91 publications containing 105 cases were included for the final analysis. Results The following frequency of clinical signs and symptoms was noted: abdominal pain (39.04%) was the leading symptom, followed by fever (33.33%), vomiting (23.81%), and nausea (19.05%). APS was present in 73%, SLE in 17% of the patients, while 2% had a diagnosis of both, SLE and APS. ACTH stimulation test (ACTHst) was performed in 18% of cases and 76.6% of them were unresponsive towards stimulation. Variable treatment approaches were used: hydrocortisone was most commonly used (38.09%), followed by fludrocortisone (26.67%), prednisolone (20.00%) and volume replacement treatment (11.43%), respectively. Conclusions This analysis highlights the importance of an early diagnosis and initiation of therapeutic management when AI is suspected. In line, signs and symptoms related to autoimmune diseases in patients with AI should be reviewed crtitically.

The effect of sintering temperature on the densification, microstructure and structure of 0.4(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-0.6BiFeO3 lead-free piezoelectric ceramics is assessed. The 0.4(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-0.6BiFeO3 powders were prepared by using the mixed-oxide method and were sintered at temperatures of 1000, 1050 and 1100 °C for 1 to 5 hrs. Unlike earlier work, the sintered samples showed high densities even when sintered at 1000 °C. X-ray diffraction revealed that the sintered samples shared the same rhombohedral structure as BiFeO3. With increasing sintering temperature, the rhombohedral distortion of the unit cell decreased. In addition to the relaxor-like broad peak around 400 °C, a low-temperature dielectric peak was found at temperatures below 190 °C by employing a low-frequency sweep down to 10 mHz. The DC conductivity of the 0.4(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-0.6BiFeO3 sample exhibited three temperature regions with activation energy values of 0.56 eV (T > 500°C), 0.72 eV (400°C < T

OBJECTIVE This study assessed the association between subjective body image or objective body mass index (BMI) and the risk of daily smoking in Korean adolescents, with a purpose of identifying the most suitable models. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using the 2013 9th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data for 72,435 students, odds ratios were calculated for daily smoking in the past month, according to the subjective body image and calculated BMI using a respective multiple logistic regression model. The combined effect of these two factors was also analyzed by pairing a BMI category with a subjective body image category, using odds ratios for the same event within each sex group. RESULTS Among the surveyed students, 7.2% of boys and 1.8% of girls were classified as daily smokers. Students who perceived themselves as being very obese tended to be at lower risk of daily smoking (OR=0.61 in boys with 95% CI=0.47 to 0.79; OR=0.66 in women with 95% CI=0.47 to 0.93). In addition, boys within the obese or overweight BMI category showed a lower risk of daily smoking (OR=0.86, 95% CI: 0.77-0.96). Lean BMI was significantly associated with higher odds ratios for daily smoking only in female students (OR=1.24, 95% CI: 1.02-1.52). When pairing these two objective and subjective factors, results suggested that subjective body image has a greater effect on daily smoking than BMI in both boys and girls. CONCLUSIONS In both male and female students, subjective body image had a greater effect on daily smoking than body mass index. A model using the combination of BMI and subjective body image was the best fit in girls, in contrast to the model using subjective body image only best suitable in boys, for the prediction of daily smoking. These results including several factors associated with daily smoking in Korean students, provide useful data for the development and implementation of smoking intervention and cessation programs for adolescents.

Human authentication based on electrocardiogram (ECG) has been a remarkable issue for recent ten years. This paper proposed an authentication technology with the ECG data recorded after the harsh exercise. 55 subjects voluntarily attended to this experiment. A stepper was used as an exercise equipment. The subjects are asked to do stepper for 5 minutes and their ECG signals are acquired before and after the exercise in rest, sitting posture. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used for both feature extraction and classification. Even though, within the first 1 minute recording, the subject recognition accuracy was 59.64%, which is too low to utilize, after one minute the accuracy was higher than 90% and it increased up to 96.22% within 5 minutes, which is plausible to use in authentication circumstances. Therefore, we have concluded that ECG authentication techniques will be able to be used after 1 minute of catching breath.

Purpose: Renal cell carcinoma is a heterogeneous kidney cancer, and over 403,000 cases were reported worldwide in 2018. Current methods for studying renal cell carcinoma are limited to two-dimensional (2D) culture of primary cell lines and patient-derived xenograft models. Numerous studies have suggested that 2D culture poorly represents the diversity, heterogeneity, and drug-resistance of primary tumors. The time and cost associated with patient-derived xenograft models poses a realistic barrier to their clinical utility. As a biomimetic model, patient-derived three-dimensional (3D) organoid culture can overcome these disadvantages and bridge the gap between in vitro cell culture and in vivo patient-derived xenograft models. Here, we establish a patient-derived 3D organoid culture system for clear cell renal cell carcinoma and demonstrate the biomimetic characteristics of our model with respect to both primary kidney cancer and conventional 2D culture. Materials and Methods: Normal renal tissues and tumor tissues were collected from patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The dissociated cells were cultured as conventional 2D culture and 3D organoid culture. The biomimetic characteristic of the two cultures were compared. Results: Compared with 2D culture, the 3D organoid cultures retained the characteristic lipid-rich, clear cell morphology of clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Carbonic anhydrase 9 and vimentin were validated as biomarkers of renal cell carcinoma. Expression of the two validated biomarkers was more enhanced in 3D organoid culture. Conclusions: Patient-derived 3D organoid culture retains the characteristics of renal cell carcinoma with respect to morphology and biomarker expression.
