We investigate the Emery model on several ladder-like lattices including two legs of copper d-orbitals and various numbers of oxygen p-orbitals. Pair binding energy, pair spatial structure, density distribution, and pairing correlation functions are calculated using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We show that a Luther-Emery phase with enhanced pairing correlations can be found for hole doping as well as for electron doping with realistic model parameters. Ladder properties depend sensitively on model parameters, the oxygen p-orbitals taken into account, and boundary conditions. The pair binding energy is a more reliable quantity than correlation functions for studying pairing in ladders. Overall, our results for two-leg Emery ladders support the possibility of superconductivity in the hole-doped 2D model. The issue is rather to determine which of the various ladder structures and model parameters are appropriate to approximate the two-dimensional cuprates.

Asymmetric two-leg Hubbard ladders with different on-site interactions $U_y$ and hoppings $t_y$ on each leg are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalizations. The pairing found in symmetric ladders is robust against the introduction of the leg asymmetry. When studying pairing, one-band Hubbard ladder models are better described as one-dimensional correlated two-band models than as sublattices of higher dimensional systems. The asymmetric Hubbard ladder provides us with a simple model for studying pairing in the crossover regime between charge transfer and Mott insulators.

We present a theoretical study of two spinless fermion wires coupled to a three dimensional semiconducting substrate. We develop a mapping of wires and substrate onto a system of two coupled two-dimensional ladder lattices using a block Lanczos algorithm. We then approximate the resulting system by narrow ladder models, which can be investigated using the density-matrix renormalization group method. In the absence of any direct wire-wire hopping we find that the substrate can mediate an effective wire-wire coupling so that the wires could form an effective two-leg ladder with a Mott charge-density-wave insulating ground state for arbitrarily small nearest-neighbor repulsion. In other cases the wires remain effectively uncoupled even for strong wire-substrate hybridizations leading to the possible stabilization of the Luttinger liquid phase at finite nearest-neighbor repulsion as found previously for single wires on substrates. These investigations show that it may be difficult to determine under which conditions the physics of correlated one-dimensional electrons can be realized in arrays of atomic wires on semiconducting substrates because they seem to depend on the model (and consequently material) particulars.

We investigate the Hubbard Hamiltonian on ladders where the number of sites per rung alternates between two and three. These geometries are bipartite, with a non-equal number of sites on the two sublattices. Thus they share a key feature of the Hubbard model in a class of lattices which Lieb has shown analytically to exhibit long-range ferrimagnetic order, while being amenable to powerful numeric approaches developed for quasi-one-dimensional geometries. The Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method is used to obtain the ground state properties, e.g. excitation gaps, charge and spin densities as well as their correlation functions at half-filling. We show the existence of long-range ferrimagnetic order in the one-dimensional ladder geometries. Our work provides detailed quantitative results which complement the general theorem of Lieb for generalized bipartite lattices. It also addresses the issue of how the alternation between quasi-long range order and spin liquid behavior for uniform ladders with odd and even numbers of legs might be affected by a regular alternation pattern., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures

Lattice models consisting of high-dimensional local degrees of freedom without global particle-number conservation constitute an important problem class in the field of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. For instance, they are realized in electron-phonon models, cavities, atom-molecule resonance models, or superconductors. In general, these systems elude a complete analytical treatment and need to be studied using numerical methods where matrix-product states (MPS) provide a flexible and generic ansatz class. Typically, MPS algorithms scale at least quadratic in the dimension of the local Hilbert spaces. Hence, tailored methods, which truncate this dimension, are required to allow for efficient simulations. Here, we describe and compare three state-of-the-art MPS methods each of which exploits a different approach to tackle the computational complexity. We analyze the properties of these methods for the example of the Holstein model, performing high-precision calculations as well as a finite-size-scaling analysis of relevant ground-state obervables. We investigate the low-energy collective charge excitations (plasmons, holons) in metallic atomic wires deposited on semiconducting substrates. These systems are described by two-dimensional correlated models representing strongly anisotropic lattices or weakly coupled chains. Well-established theoretical approaches and results are used to study their properties: random phase approximation for anisotropic Fermi liquids and bosonization for coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids as well as Bethe Ansatz and density-matrix renormalization group methods for ladder models. We show that the Fermi and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theories predict the same qualitative behavior for the dispersion of excitations at long wave lengths. Moreover, their scaling depends on the choice of the effective electron-electron interaction but does not characterize the dimensionality of the metallic state. Our results also suggest that such anisotropic correlated systems can exhibit two-dimensional dispersions due to the coupling between wires but remain quasi-one-dimensional strongly anisotropic conductors or retain typical features of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids such as the power-law behaviour of the density of states at the Fermi energy. Thus it is possible that atomic wire materials such as Au/Ge(100) exhibit a mixture of features associated with one and two dimensional metals.

We present a generic grand-canonical theory for the Peierls transition in atomic wires deposited on semiconducting substrates such as In/Si(111) using a mean-field solution of the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We show that this simple low-energy effective model for atomic wires can explain naturally the occurrence of a first-order Peierls transition between a uniform metallic phase at high-temperature and a dimerized insulating phase at low temperature as well as the existence of a metastable uniform state below the critical temperature.

In a previous paper [J.-M. Bischoff and E. Jeckelmann, Phys. Rev. B 96, 195111 (2017)] we introduced a density-matrix renormalization group method for calculating the linear conductance of one-dimensional correlated quantum systems and demonstrated it on homogeneous spinless fermion chains with impurities. Here we present extensions of this method to inhomogeneous systems, models with phonons, and the spin conductance of electronic models. The method is applied to a spinless fermion wire-lead model, the homogeneous spinless Holstein model, and the Hubbard model. Its capabilities are demonstrated by comparison with the predictions of Luttinger liquid theory combined with Bethe Ansatz solutions and other numerical methods. We find a complex behavior for quantum wires coupled to interacting leads when the sign of the interaction (repulsive/attractive) differs in wire and leads. The renormalization of the conductance given by the Luttinger parameter in purely fermionic systems is shown to remain valid in the Luttinger liquid phase of the Holstein model with phononic degrees of freedom.

An interacting spinless fermion wire coupled to a three-dimensional (3D) semiconducting substrate is approximated by a narrow ladder model (NLM) with varying number of legs. We compute density distributions, gaps, charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameters, correlation functions, and the central charge using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Three ground-state phases are observed: a one-component Luttinger liquid, a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) CDW insulator, and a band insulator. We investigated the convergence of the NLM properties with increasing number of legs systematically and confirm that the NLM is a good approximation for the quasi-1D phases (Luttinger liquid and CDW) of the 3D wire-substrate model. The quantum phase transitions between these phases are investigated as function of the coupling between wire and substrate. The critical nearest-neighbor interaction increases with increasing coupling between wire and substrate and thus the substrate stabilizes the Luttinger liquid in the wire. Our study confirms that a Luttinger liquid or CDW insulator phase could occur in the low-energy properties of atomic wires deposited on semiconducting substrates., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We improve the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) evaluation of the Kubo formula for the zero-temperature linear conductance of one-dimensional correlated systems.The dynamical DMRG is used to compute the linear response of a finite system to an applied AC source-drain voltage, then the low-frequency finite-system response is extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit to obtain the DC conductance of an infinite system. The method is demonstrated on the one-dimensional spinless fermion model at half filling. Our method is able to replicate several predictions of the Luttinger liquid theory such as the renormalization of the conductance in an homogeneous conductor, the universal effects of a single barrier, and the resonant tunneling through a double barrier., Comment: published version

Correlation functions and low-energy excitations are investigated in the asymmetric two-leg ladder consisting of a Hubbard chain and a noninteracting tight-binding (Fermi) chain using the density matrix renormalization group method. The behavior of charge, spin and pairing correlations is discussed for the four phases found at half filling, namely, Luttinger liquid, Kondo-Mott insulator, spin-gapped Mott insulator and correlated band insulator. Quasi-long-range antiferromagnetic spin correlations are found in the Hubbard leg in the Luttinger liquid phase only. Pair-density-wave correlations are studied to understand the structure of bound pairs found in the Fermi leg of the spin-gapped Mott phase at half filling and at light doping but we find no enhanced pairing correlations. Low-energy excitations cause variations of spin and charge densities on both legs that demonstrate the confinement of the lowest charge excitations on the Fermi leg while the lowest spin excitations are localized on the Hubbard leg in the three insulating phases. The velocities of charge, spin, and single-particle excitations are investigated to clarify the confinement of elementary excitations in the Luttinger liquid phase. The observed spatial separation of elementary spin and charge excitations could facilitate the coexistence of different (quasi-)long-range orders in higher-dimensional extensions of the asymmetric Hubbard ladder.

In the first part of our theoretical study of correlated atomic wires on substrates, we introduced lattice models for a one-dimensional quantum wire on a three-dimensional substrate and their approximation by quasi-one-dimensional effective ladder models [arXiv:1704.07350]. In this second part, we apply this approach to the case of a correlated wire with a Hubbard-type electron-electron repulsion deposited on an insulating substrate. The ground-state and spectral properties are investigated numerically using the density-matrix renormalization group method and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. As a function of the model parameters, we observe various phases with quasi-one-dimensional low-energy excitations localized in the wire, namely paramagnetic Mott insulators, Luttinger liquids, and spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chains. The validity of the effective ladder models is assessed by studying the convergence with the number of legs and comparing to the full three-dimensional model. We find that narrow ladder models accurately reproduce the quasi-one-dimensional excitations of the full three-dimensional model but predict only qualitatively whether excitations are localized around the wire or delocalized in the three-dimensional substrate.

We present a theoretical study of correlated atomic wires deposited on substrates in two parts. In this first part, we propose lattice models for a one-dimensional quantum wire on a three-dimensional substrate and map them onto effective two-dimensional lattices using the Lanczos algorithm. We then discuss the approximation of these two-dimensional lattices by narrow ladder models that can be investigated with well-established methods for one-dimensional correlated quantum systems, such as the density-matrix renormalization group or bosonization. The validity of this approach is studied first for noninteracting electrons and then for a correlated wire with a Hubbard electron-electron repulsion using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. While narrow ladders cannot be used to represent wires on metallic substrates, they capture the physics of wires on insulating substrates if at least three legs are used. In the second part [arXiv:1704.07359], we use this approach for a detailed numerical investigation of a wire with a Hubbard-type interaction on an insulating substrate.

Starting from a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-like model inferred from first-principles simulations, we show that the metal-insulator transition in In/Si(111) is a first-order grand canonical Peierls transition in which the substrate acts as an electron reservoir for the wires. This model explains naturally the existence of a metastable metallic phase over a wide temperature range below the critical temperature and the sensitivity of the transition to doping. Raman scattering experiments corroborate the softening of the two Peierls deformation modes close to the transition.

We present a method for simulating the time evolution of one-dimensional correlated electron-phonon systems which combines the time-evolving block decimation algorithm with a dynamical optimization of the local basis. This approach can reduce the computational cost by orders of magnitude when boson fluctuations are large. The method is demonstrated on the nonequilibrium Holstein polaron by comparison with exact simulations in a limited functional space and on the scattering of an electronic wave packet by local phonon modes. Our study of the scattering problem reveals a rich physics including transient self-trapping and dissipation.

We present a large-scale combinatorial-diagrammatic computation of high-order contributions to the strong-coupling Kato-Takahashi perturbation series for the Hubbard model in high dimensions. The ground-state energy of the Mott-insulating phase is determined exactly up to the 15-th order in 1/U. The perturbation expansion is extrapolated to infinite order and the critical behavior is determined using the Domb-Sykes method. We compare the perturbative results with two dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations using a quantum Monte Carlo method and a density-matrix renormalization group method as impurity solvers. The comparison demonstrates the excellent agreement and accuracy of both extrapolated strong-coupling perturbation theory and quantum Monte Carlo based DMFT, even close to the critical coupling where the Mott insulator becomes unstable., Comment: Revised, published version

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wavenumbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We present a numerical method for calculating piecewise smooth spectral functions of correlated quantum systems in the thermodynamic limit from the spectra of finite systems computed using the dynamical or correction-vector density-matrix renormalization group method. The key idea is to consider this problem as a blind deconvolution with an unknown kernel which causes both a broadening and finite-size corrections of the spectrum. In practice, the method reduces to a least-square optimization under non-linear constraints which enforce the positivity and piecewise smoothness of spectral functions. The method is demonstrated on the single-particle density of states of one-dimensional paramagnetic Mott insulators represented by the half-filled Hubbard model on an open chain. We investigate the local density of states of the one-dimensional half-filled spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor hopping t>0 and interaction V in its Luttinger liquid phase -2t < V <= 2t. The bulk density of states and the local density of states in open chains are calculated over the full band width 4t with an energy resolution <= 0.08t using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) method. We also perform DDMRG simulations with a resolution of 0.01t around the Fermi energy to reveal the power-law behaviour predicted by the Luttinger liquid theory for bulk and boundary density of states. The exponents are determined using a finite-size scaling analysis of DDMRG data for lattices with up to 3200 sites. The results agree with the exact exponents given by the Luttinger liquid theory combined with the Bethe Ansatz solution. The crossover from boundary to bulk density of states is analyzed. We have found that boundary effects can be seen in the local density of states at all energies even far away from the chain edges.

Several density-matrix renormalization group methods have been proposed to compute the momentum- and frequency-resolved dynamical correlation functions of low-dimensional strongly correlated systems. The most relevant approaches are discussed in this contribution. We extend previous analytical studies of the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain coupled to optical phonons, which for increasing spin-lattice coupling undergoes a quantum phase transition from a gap-less to a gaped phase with finite lattice dimerisation. We investigate the optical conductivity in the Mott insulating phase of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with alternating hopping terms (dimerization) at quarter band filling. Optical spectra are calculated for the various parameter regimes using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. The study of limiting cases allows us to explain the various structures found numerically in the optical conductivity of this model. Our calculations show that the dimerization and the nearest-neighbor repulsion determine the main features of the spectrum. The on-site repulsion plays only a secondary role. We study the Hubbard model at half band-filling on a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number in the paramagnetic insulating phase at zero temperature. We use the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) mapping to a single-impurity Anderson model with a bath whose properties have to be determined self-consistently. For a controlled and systematic implementation of the self-consistency scheme we use the fixed-energy (FE) approach to the DMFT. In FE-DMFT the onset and the width of the Hubbard bands are adjusted self-consistently but the energies of the bath levels are kept fixed relatively to both band edges during the calculation of self-consistent hybridization strengths between impurity and bath sites. Using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method (DDMRG) we calculate the density of states with a resolution ranging from 3% of the bare bandwidth $W=4t$ at high energies to 0.5% in the vicinity of the gap. The DDMRG resolution and accuracy for the density of states and the gap is superior to those obtained with other numerical methods in previous DMFT investigations. We find that the Mott gap closes at a critical coupling $U_{\rm c}/t=4.45 \pm 0.05$. At $U=4.5t$, we observe prominent shoulders near the onset of the Hubbard bands. In PRB 68, 153101 (2003), Guoping Zhang presented density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results which contradict my DMRG calculations and Hirsch's quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations for the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase boundary in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling. A dynamic density-matrix renormalisation group approach to the spectral properties of quantum impurity problems is presented. The method is demonstrated on the spectral density of the flat-band symmetric single-impurity Anderson model. We show that this approach provides the impurity spectral density for all frequencies and coupling strengths. In particular, Hubbard satellites at high energy can be obtained with a good resolution. In their Comment (see cond-mat/0301237), Sandvik, Sengupta, and Campbell present some numerical evidences to support the existence of an extended bond-order-wave (BOW) phase at couplings (U,V) weaker than a tricritical point (U_t,V_t) in the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled U-V Hubbard model. They claim that their results do not agree with the phase diagram proposed in my Letter (cond-mat/0204244), which shows a BOW phase for couplings stronger than the critical point only. We calculate the zero-temperature self-energy to fourth-order perturbation theory in the Hubbard interaction $U$ for the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. For the Bethe lattice with bare bandwidth $W$, we compare our perturbative results for the self-energy, the single-particle density of states, and the momentum distribution to those from approximate analytical and numerical studies of the model. Results for the density of states from perturbation theory at $U/W=0.4$ agree very well with those from the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory treated with the Fixed-Energy Exact Diagonalization and with the Dynamical Density-Matrix Renormalization Group. In contrast, our results reveal the limited resolution of the Numerical Renormalization Group approach in treating the Hubbard bands. The momentum distributions from all approximate studies of the model are very similar in the regime where perturbation theory is applicable, $U/W \le 0.6$. The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method is used to investigate optical excitations in the Mott insulating phase of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. The linear optical conductivity is calculated using the dynamical DMRG method and the nature of the lowest optically excited states is investigated using a symmetrized DMRG approach. The numerical calculations agree perfectly with field-theoretical predictions for a small Mott gap and analytical results for a large Mott gap obtained with a strong-coupling analysis. Is is shown that four types of optical excitations exist in this Mott insulator: pairs of unbound charge excitations, excitons, excitonic strings, and charge-density-wave (CDW) droplets. Each type of excitations dominates the low-energy optical spectrum in some region of the interaction parameter space and corresponds to distinct spectral features: a continuum starting at the Mott gap (unbound charge excitations), a single peak or several isolated peaks below the Mott gap (excitons and excitonic strings, respectively), and a continuum below the Mott gap (CDW droplets)., Comment: 12 pages (REVTEX 4), 12 figures (in 14 eps files), 1 table

The density-matrix renormalization group is used to study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsion, and hopping t. A critical line V_c(U) approximately equal to U/2 separates a Mott insulating phase from a charge-density-wave phase. The formation of bound charge excitations for V > 2t changes the phase transition from continuous to first order at a tricritical point U_t = 3.7t, V_t=2t. I present a density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method for calculating dynamical properties and excited states in low-dimensional lattice quantum many-body systems. The method is based on an exact variational principle for dynamical correlation functions and the excited states contributing to them. This dynamical DMRG is an alternate formulation of the correction vector DMRG but is both simpler and more accurate. The finite-size scaling of spectral functions is discussed and a method for analyzing the scaling of dense spectra is described. The key idea of the method is a size-dependent broadening of the spectrum.The dynamical DMRG and the finite-size scaling analysis are demonstrated on the optical conductivity of the one-dimensional Peierls-Hubbard model. Comparisons with analytical results show that the spectral functions of infinite systems can be reproduced almost exactly with these techniques. We investigate the application of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) to the Hubbard model in momentum-space. We treat the one-dimensional models with dispersion relations corresponding to nearest-neighbor hopping and $1/r$ hopping and the two-dimensional model with isotropic nearest-neighbor hopping. By comparing with the exact solutions for both one-dimensional models and with exact diagonalization in two dimensions, we first investigate the convergence of the ground-state energy. We find variational convergence of the energy with the number of states kept for all models and parameter sets. In contrast to the real-space algorithm, the accuracy becomes rapidly worse with increasing interaction and is not significantly better at half filling. We compare the results for different dispersion relations at fixed interaction strength over bandwidth and find that extending the range of the hopping in one dimension has little effect, but that changing the dimensionality from one to two leads to lower accuracy at weak to moderate interaction strength. In the one-dimensional models at half-filling, we also investigate the behavior of the single-particle gap, the dispersion of spinon excitations, and the momentum distribution function. For the single-particle gap, we find that proper extrapolation in the number of states kept is important. For the spinon dispersion, we find that good agreement with the exact forms can be achieved at weak coupling if the large momentum-dependent finite-size effects are taken into account for nearest-neighbor hopping. We study the one-dimensional Holstein model with spin-1/2 electrons at half-filling. Ground state properties are calculated for long chains with great accuracy using the density matrix renormalization group method and extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit. We show that for small electron-phonon coupling or large phonon frequency, the insulating Peierls ground state predicted by mean-field theory is destroyed by quantum lattice fluctuations and that the system remains in a metallic phase with a non-degenerate ground state and power-law electronic and phononic correlations. When the electron-phonon coupling becomes large or the phonon frequency small, the system undergoes a transition to an insulating Peierls phase with a two-fold degenerate ground state, long-range charge-density-wave order, a dimerized lattice structure, and a gap in the electronic excitation spectrum., Comment: 6 pages (LaTex), 10 eps figures

The spectral weight functions and the optical conductivity of the Holstein model are studied on a one-dimensional six-site lattice with periodic boundary conditions for three different electron concentrations: a single electron, two electrons of opposite spins, and half filling. A density matrix approach is used to obtain an optimal phonon basis and to truncate the phonon Hilbert space without significant loss of accuracy. This approach allows us to calculate spectral functions for electrons dressed locally by the optimal phonons as well as for bare electrons. We obtain evidence for a smooth crossover from quasi-free electrons to an heavy itinerant small polaron (single-electron case) or bipolaron (two-electron case) as the electron-phonon coupling strength increases. At half filling we observe a crossover from a quasi-free-electron ground state to a quasi-degenerate Peierls charge-density-wave ground state for a finite electron-phonon coupling. Using both the density-matrix renormalization group method and the constrained-path quantum Monte Carlo method, we have studied the ground-state energies and the spin and hole densities of a $12 \times 3$ Hubbard model with open boundary conditions and 6 holes doped away from half-filling. Results obtained with these two methods agree well in the small and intermediate $U$ regimes. The one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model is studied at several band fillings using the density matrix renormalization group method. Results show that the ground state evolves from a Mott-Peierls insulator with a correlation gap at half-filling to a soliton lattice with a small band gap away from half-filling. It is also confirmed that the ground state of the Peierls-Hubbard model undergoes a transition to a metallic state at finite doping. These results show that electronic correlations effects should be taken into account in theoretical studies of doped polyacetylene. We propose a new density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach to study lattices including bosons. The key to the new approach is an exact mapping of a boson site containing 2^N states to N pseudo-sites, each with 2 states. The pseudo-sites can be viewed as the binary digits of a boson level. We apply the pseudo-site DMRG method to the polaron problem in the one- and two-dimensional Holstein models. Ground state results are presented for a wide range of electron-phonon coupling strengths and phonon frequencies on lattices large enough (up to 80 sites in one dimension and up to 20x20 sites in two dimensions) to eliminate finite size effects, with up to 128 phonon states per phonon mode. We find a smooth but quite abrupt crossover from a quasi-free electron ground state with a slightly renormalized mass at weak electron-phonon coupling to a polaronic ground state with a large effective mass at strong coupling, in agreement with previous studies., Comment: 26 pages (REVTEX), 13 PostScript figures

We present a density matrix approach for treating systems with a large or infinite number of degrees of freedom per site with exact diagonalization or the density matrix renormalization group. The method is demonstrated on the 1D Holstein model of electrons coupled to Einstein phonons.
