15. Exploring the Standard Language Ideology in China's Language Policy

Abstract

Purpose: This research explores the standard language ideology in Chinese foreign language education policies. The most substantial in relation to language policy and management in regard to language ideology are beliefs associated with the values on the named language and its varieties (Spolsky, 2009). In the standard language ideology, the standard is treated as being valuable linguistic capital and possessing prestige as well as authority. Mandarin is the most well-accepted standard Chinese, and similarly, UK English or US English is the most popular and Standard English (SE) in China. Design/methodology/approach: The theoretical framework in this research is critical discourse analysis (CDA) and discourse-historical approach (DHA) to guide the data collection and data analysis. This research will review recent and seminal literature obtained from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) on language policy in China in relation to standard language ideology. The literature also investigates Chinese state's English language ideologies using official language education policies (FLEPs). Findings: The results show that standard language ideology is a common mindset found within official state policies in regard to SE. The authors argue that the Chinese trust on the ideology of standard language appears to not be aligned to recent worldwide trends such as globalization and multilingualism. Originality/value: This research can provide insights into future language planning and language policy in China and shows that the future research could do more on language planning in China.

30. Abstract Acceleration of General Linear Loops

Abstract

We present abstract acceleration techniques for computing loop invariants for numerical programs with linear assignments and conditionals. Whereas abstract interpretation techniques typically over-approximate the set of reachable states iteratively, abstract acceleration captures the effect of the loop with a single, non-iterative transfer function applied to the initial states at the loop head. In contrast to previous acceleration techniques, our approach applies to any linear loop without restrictions. Its novelty lies in the use of the Jordan normal form decomposition of the loop body to derive symbolic expressions for the entries of the matrix modeling the effect of n>=0 iterations of the loop. The entries of such a matrix depend on $n$ through complex polynomial, exponential and trigonometric functions. Therefore, we introduces an abstract domain for matrices that captures the linear inequality relations between these complex expressions. This results in an abstract matrix for describing the fixpoint semantics of the loop. Our approach integrates smoothly into standard abstract interpreters and can handle programs with nested loops and loops containing conditional branches. We evaluate it over small but complex loops that are commonly found in control software, comparing it with other tools for computing linear loop invariants. The loops in our benchmarks typically exhibit polynomial, exponential and oscillatory behaviors that present challenges to existing approaches. Our approach finds non-trivial invariants to prove useful bounds on the values of variables for such loops, clearly outperforming the existing approaches in terms of precision while exhibiting good performance., Comment: Extended version with appendices of paper accepted to POPL'2014

31. Diversity in Australian Higher Education: An Empirical Analysis

Abstract

The concept of diversity has been part of the Australian government's higher education agenda for several years, but empirical studies on the actual state of diversity in the sector are limited. This situation raises questions regarding the factual basis for the policy claims made. With this in mind, this paper seeks to assess the degree of diversity within the Australian higher education sector through an analysis of the perceptions, aspirations and reported activities of Australian academics in terms of their teaching, research and community service. Using data collected in the 2007 international Changing Nature of the Academic Profession survey, we are able to cautiously conclude that some diversity appears to exist, however not to the extent one might expect given the importance placed on institutional groupings in the Australian higher education debate. Abstract

Because one-third of patients deteriorate after their admission to the emergency department, assessing the prognosis of COVID-19 patients is of great importance. However, to date, only lymphopenia and the partial pressure of oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen (PaO2/FiO2) ratio have been reported as partly predictive of COVID-19–related further deterioration, and their association has not been evaluated. We asked whether other key biomarkers of SARS-CoV-2 immunologic defects—increase in circulating immature granulocytes, loss of monocyte HLA-DR (mHLA-DR) expression, and monocyte differentiation blockade—could also predict further COVID-19 deterioration. A series of 284 consecutive COVID-19 patients, with the sole inclusion criterion of being an adult, were prospectively enrolled at emergency department admission (day 0) of 2 different hospitals: 1 for the exploratory cohort (180 patients) and 1 for the confirmatory cohort (104 patients). Deterioration was assessed over the next 7 days. Neither increased immature granulocyte levels nor monocyte differentiation blockade predicted patient worsening. Among more than 30 clinical, biological, and radiological parameters, the value of decreased P/F ratio and lymphopenia for prediction of further COVID-19 deterioration was strongly confirmed, and the loss of mHLA-DR was the only additional independent marker. Combined together in a simple OxyLymphoMono score, the 3 variables perfectly predicted patients who did not worsen and correctly predicted worsening in 59% of cases. By highlighting lymphocyte and monocyte defects as preceding COVID-19 deterioration, these results point on early immunosuppression in COVID-19 deterioration. Combining P/F ratio, lymphopenia, and loss of mHLA-DR together in a simple and robust score could offer a pragmatic method for COVID-19 patient stratification.Preceding COVID-19 deterioration, increase in low HLA-DR monocytes points on early COVID-19 immunosuppression and, with lymphopenia, is the only independent biological parameter predicting COVID-19 worsening.

Abstract

We report the first direct observation of excited state muon transfer in hydrogen/deuterium mixtures by direct measurement of q_1s, the probability that a mu-p atom, which is initially formed in an excited state, reaches the 1s ground state. The dependence of q_1s on deuterium concentration c_d was measured for two different densities at cryogenic temperatures using charge coupled devices (CCDs) to detect the muonic X rays. Abstract

We report our investigations of X rays emitted during the muonic cascade in hydrogen employing charge coupled devices as X-ray detectors. The density dependence of the relative X-ray yields for the muonic hydrogen lines (K_alpha, K_beta, K_gamma) has been measured at densities between 0.00115 and 0.97 of liquid hydrogen density. In this density region collisional processes dominate the cascade down to low energy levels.
