1. Urban flood susceptibility modelling using AHP and GIS approach: case of the Mfoundi watershed at Yaoundé in the South-Cameroon plateau

Abstract

Floods are considered as the natural hazards that affect the world's major metropolises the most. Thus, the present study aimed at evaluating the sensitivity to flood risks of the Mfoundi watershed (96.5 km2) located in the heart of the Cameroonian political capital in a tropical humid forest zone, more precisely in the South Cameroon plateau. The methodological approach adopted was to identify the factors that most favor the risk of flooding in the area from intense literature review and field investigations; the analysis of these factors and the calculation of the Flood Harzard Index (FHI) using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach coupled with the Geographical Information System (GIS) environment. The results reveal that among the ten parameters of the natural environment (elevation, drainage density, rainfall, slope, distance from the river, topographic humidity, hydraulic conductivity, groundwater level, geology and land cover) selected, the land cover, elevation and the geology are the factors that most influences the flooding phenomenon in the area. The value of Flood Hazard Index (FHI) varied from 4.16 to 9.16, the higher the value, the more sensitive the area is to the risk of flooding. Five main classes of flood susceptibility are highlighted: very low, low, moderate, high and very high, representing 9.50, 26, 23, 22 and 19.5%, respectively of the study area. To validate the efficiency of the obtained flood susceptibility map, the adopted Area Under the Curve (AUC) method shows a very good accuracy (0.84 or 84%). The results of this study constitute a basic tool for decision-making for environmental management by public authorities and decentralised territorial authorities with territorial jurisdiction.

Abstract

Abstract Many contaminants of agricultural origin are released into rural environments, particularly at the soil surface. Their fate has been extensively investigated in repacked soils, but only few studies have addressed their transport in structurally preserved natural soils. Much remains unknown about their fate and transfer within and between environmental compartments, while the susceptibility of these compartments to the contaminants adverse effects can vary considerably. The lack of studies regarding surface and subsurface transfer of contaminants through intact soil compared with studies on repacked soil led us to propose a device and protocol for sampling intact soil monoliths (60 × 30 × 22 cm3, length, width, depth [LWD]) without heavy machinery. This is achieved by a modular design with removable top and bottom lid and a protocol of cutting the soil and replacing the affected bottom soil with a drainage layer of glass beads. The device allows the application of artificial rainfall events with simultaneous highly resolved quantification of infiltration excess overland flow and drainage discharge. It is designed to facilitate the collection of samples for physical, biological, and chemical analyses that fulfill cleanliness standards for organic contaminant analysis at trace levels using only poorly reactive stainless steel and glass materials. Testing of the device was performed by measuring the transfer of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin (IVM) through and over a silt‐loam pasture soil. This test case illustrates how the device can be used to gain valuable information on the transfer of trace organic contaminants through topsoils.

Abstract

A large share of surface water resources in Sahelian countries originates from Guinea’s Fouta Djallon highlands, earning the area the name of “the water tower of West Africa”. This paper aims to investigate the recent dynamics of the Fouta Djallon’s hydrological functioning. The evolution of the runoff and depletion coefficients are analyzed as well as their correlations with the rainfall and vegetation cover. The latter is described at three different space scales and with different methods. Twenty-five years after the end of the 1968–1993 major drought, annual discharges continue to slowly increase, nearly reaching a long-term average, as natural reservoirs which emptied to sustain streamflows during the drought have been replenishing since the 1990s, explaining the slow increase in discharges. However, another important trend has been detected since the beginning of the drought, i.e., the increase in the depletion coefficient of most of the Fouta Djallon upper basins, as a consequence of the reduction in the soil water-holding capacity. After confirming the pertinence and significance of this increase and subsequent decrease in the depletion coefficient, this paper identifies the factors possibly linked with the basins’ storage capacity trends. The densely populated areas of the summit plateau are also shown to be the ones where vegetation cover is not threatened and where ecological intensification of rural activities is ancient.

Abstract

In West Africa, as in many other estuaries, enormous volumes of marine water are entering the continent. Fresh water discharge is very low, and it is commonly strongly linked to rainfall level. Some of these estuaries are inverse estuaries. During the Great Sahelian Drought (1968−1993), their hyperhaline feature was exacerbated. This paper aims to describe the evolution of the two main West African inverse estuaries, those of the Saloum River and the Casamance River, since the end of the drought. Water salinity measurements were carried out over three to five years according to the sites in order to document this evolution and to compare data with the historical ones collected during the long dry period at the end of 20th century. The results show that in both estuaries, the mean water salinity values have markedly decreased since the end of the drought. However, the Saloum estuary remains a totally inverse estuary, while for the Casamance River, the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) is the location of the salinity maximum, and it moves according to the seasons from a location 1−10 km downwards from the upstream estuary entry, during the dry season, to a location 40−70 km downwards from this point, during the rainy season. These observations fit with the functioning of the mangrove, the West African mangrove being among the few in the world that are markedly increasing since the beginning of the 1990s and the end of the dry period, as mangrove growth is favored by the relative salinity reduction. Finally, one of the inverse estuary behavior factors is the low fresh water incoming from the continent. The small area of the Casamance and Saloum basins (20,150 and 26,500 km² respectively) is to be compared with the basins of their two main neighbor basins, the Gambia River and the Senegal River, which provide significant fresh water discharge to their estuary.

Abstract

In the West African Sahel, two paradoxical hydrological behaviors have occurred during the last five decades. The first paradox was observed during the 1968–1990s ‘Great Drought’ period, during which runoff significantly increased. The second paradox appeared during the subsequent period of rainfall recovery (i.e., since the 1990s), during which the runoff coefficient continued to increase despite the general re-greening of the Sahel. This paper reviews and synthesizes the literature on the drivers of these paradoxical behaviors, focusing on recent works in the West African Sahelo/Sudanian strip, and upscaling the hydrological processes through an analysis of recent data from two representative areas of this region. This paper helps better determine the respective roles played by Land Use/Land Cover Changes (LULCC), the evolution of rainfall intensity and the occurrence of extreme rainfall events in these hydrological paradoxes. Both the literature review and recent data converge in indicating that the first Sahelian hydrological paradox was mostly driven by LULCC, while the second paradox has been caused by both LULCC and climate evolution, mainly the recent increase in rainfall intensity.

6. Impact of distributed meteorological forcing on simulated snow cover and hydrological fluxes over a mid-elevation alpine micro-scale catchment

Abstract

From the micro- to the mesoscale, water and energy budgets of mountainous catchments are largely driven by topographic features such as terrain orientation, slope, steepness, and elevation, together with associated meteorological forcings such as precipitation, solar radiation, and wind speed. Those topographic features govern the snow deposition, melting, and transport, which further impacts the overall water cycle. However, this microscale variability is not well represented in Earth system models due to coarse resolutions. This study explores the impact of precipitation, shortwave radiation, and wind speed on the water budget distribution over a 15.28 ha small, mid-elevation (2000–2200 m) alpine catchment at Col du Lautaret (France). The grass-dominated catchment remains covered with snow for 5 to 6 months per year. The surface–subsurface coupled distributed hydrological model ParFlow-CLM is used at a very high resolution (10 m) to simulate the impacts on the water cycle of meteorological variability at very small spatial and temporal scales. These include 3D simulations of hydrological fluxes with spatially distributed forcing of precipitation, shortwave radiation, and wind speed compared to 3D simulations of hydrological fluxes with non-distributed forcing. Our precipitation distribution method encapsulates the spatial snow distribution along with snow transport. The model simulates the dynamics and spatial variability of snow cover using the Common Land Model (CLM) energy balance module and under different combinations of distributed forcing. The resulting subsurface and surface water transfers are computed by the ParFlow module. Distributed forcing leads to spatially heterogeneous snow cover simulation, which becomes patchy at the end of the melt season and shows a good agreement with the remote sensing images (mean bias error (MBE) = 0.22). This asynchronous melting results in a longer melting period compared to the non-distributed forcing, which does not generate any patchiness. Among the distributed meteorological forcings tested, precipitation distribution, including snow transport, has the greatest impact on spatial snow cover (MBE = 0.06) and runoff. Shortwave radiation distribution has an important impact, reducing evapotranspiration as a function of the slope orientation (decreasing the slope between observed and simulated evapotranspiration from 1.55 to 1.18). For the primarily east-facing catchment studied here, distributing shortwave radiation helps generate realistic timing and spatial heterogeneity in the snowmelt at the expense of an increase in the mean bias error (from 0.06 to 0.22) for all distributed forcing simulations compared to the simulation with only distributed precipitation. Distributing wind speed in the energy balance calculation has a more complex impact on our catchment, as it accelerates snowmelt when meteorological conditions are favorable but does not generate snow patches at the end of our test case. This shows that slope- and aspect-based meteorological distribution can improve the spatio-temporal representation of snow cover and evapotranspiration in complex mountain terrain.

9. Impact of distributed meteorological forcing on snow dynamic and induced water fluxes over a mid-elevation alpine micro-scale catchment

However, this microscale variability is not well represented in Earth System Models due to coarse resolutions, and impacts of such resolution assumptions on simulated water and energy budget lack quantification. This study aims at exploring these effects on a 15.28 ha small mid-elevation (2000–2200 m) alpine catchment at Col du Lautaret (France). This grass-dominated catchment remains covered with snow for 5 to 6 months per year. The surface-subsurface coupled hyper-resolution (10 m) distributed hydrological model ParFLOW-CLM is used to simulate the impacts of meteorological variability at spatio-temporal micro-scale on the water cycle. These include 3D simulations with spatially distributed forcing of precipitation, solar radiation and wind compared to 3D simulations with non-distributed forcing simulation. Our precipitation distribution method encapsulates the spatial snow distribution along with snow transport. The model simulates the snow cover dynamics and spatial variability through the CLM energy balance module and under the different combinations of distributed forcing. The resulting subsurface and surface water transfers are solved by the ParFLOW module. Distributed forcing induce a snowpack with a more spatially heterogeneous thickness, which becomes patchy during the melt season and shows a good agreement with the remote sensing images. This asynchronous melting results in a longer melting period and smoother hydrological response than the non-distributed forcing, which does not generate any patchiness. Amongst the tested distributed meteorological forcing that impacts the hydrology, precipitation distribution, including snow transportation, is the most important. Solar insolation distribution has an important impact in reducing evapotranspiration depending on the slope orientation. For the studied catchment mainly facing east, it adds small differential melting effect. Wind distribution in the energy budget calculation has a more complicated impact on our catchment as it participate to accelerate the melting when meteorological conditions are favourable but does not generate patchiness at the end in our test case.

Abstract

A large share of surface water resources in Sahelian countries originates from Guinea&rsquo, s Fouta Djallon highlands, earning the area the name of &ldquo, the water tower of West Africa&rdquo, This paper aims to investigate the recent dynamics of the Fouta Djallon&rsquo, s hydrological functioning. The evolution of the runoff and depletion coefficients are analyzed as well as their correlations with the rainfall and vegetation cover. The latter is described at three different space scales and with different methods. Twenty-five years after the end of the 1968&ndash, 1993 major drought, annual discharges continue to slowly increase, nearly reaching a long-term average, as natural reservoirs which emptied to sustain streamflows during the drought have been replenishing since the 1990s, explaining the slow increase in discharges. However, another important trend has been detected since the beginning of the drought, i.e., the increase in the depletion coefficient of most of the Fouta Djallon upper basins, as a consequence of the reduction in the soil water-holding capacity. After confirming the pertinence and significance of this increase and subsequent decrease in the depletion coefficient, this paper identifies the factors possibly linked with the basins&rsquo, storage capacity trends. The densely populated areas of the summit plateau are also shown to be the ones where vegetation cover is not threatened and where ecological intensification of rural activities is ancient.

11. Groundwater dynamics retrievals in Africa using SMOS soil moisture measurements

Abstract

ESA’s SMOS mission is celebrating 10 years of measurements in 2020 and is still producing soil moisture data of interest for many applications. One of the successes of this mission is its unexpected applications of soil moisture, such as thin ice sheets over the ocean, above ground biomass and carbon stocks, crop yields or rainfall estimation. We believe that knowledge of soil moisture time series contains information that are closely related to the functioning of the hydrosphere (infiltration, evaporation, groundwater recharge) and the biosphere (vegetation development, crop yield, carbon storage). These two compartments are traditionally studied using models forced by precipitation rates and atmospheric variables. However, beyond the difficulty of measuring the precipitation rate accurately from space, a non-negligible portion of rain does not infiltrate the soil either because it is intercepted by vegetation or because of the surface runoff.In this study, we assume that SMOS retrieved soil moisture dynamics (0-5 cm) can inform us on much deeper soil horizons. Given that the water that reaches the root zone (0-200cm) and groundwater necessarily transits at some point through the surface, we can hypothesize that surface soil moisture dynamics intrinsically contains information on water dynamics in deeper layers.To test this idea, we used Richards' 1D model and forced the first layer of the model with 5-cm in-situ soil moisture measurements from the AMMA-CATCH observatory sites in West-Africa. A variation of soil moisture at the surface generates moisture variations in the deeper layers according to the hydrodynamic parameters of the model: soil conductivity at saturation (Ks), shape parameters of the retention curve (α and m), soil porosity (θsat). For highly permeable soils, water rapidly infiltrates the soil column and creates a groundwater table with its seasonal dynamics. For more impermeable soils, water remains close to the surface and there is no groundwater recharge. This approach satisfyingly compares with in-situ measurements concerning both root zone soil moisture profiles and water table dynamics.In a second step, the proposed methodology was applied to measurements derived from the SMOS satellite over the whole of Africa. To substitute in situ measurements, the GRACE satellite gravity data is used to compare with simulated soil water variations. This comparison allows to reject a lot of hydrodynamic parameters, and to select the best combination of the 4 parameters. Finally, the method makes it possible to produce maps of water table depths and their temporal dynamics at the scale of the African continent from information on surface soil moisture from SMOS (0-5cm) and soil water content from GRACE satellite.

Abstract

In West Africa, as in many other estuaries, enormous volumes of marine water are entering the continent. Fresh water discharge is very low, and it is commonly strongly linked to rainfall level. Some of these estuaries are inverse estuaries. During the Great Sahelian Drought (1968&ndash, 1993), their hyperhaline feature was exacerbated. This paper aims to describe the evolution of the two main West African inverse estuaries, those of the Saloum River and the Casamance River, since the end of the drought. Water salinity measurements were carried out over three to five years according to the sites in order to document this evolution and to compare data with the historical ones collected during the long dry period at the end of 20th century. The results show that in both estuaries, the mean water salinity values have markedly decreased since the end of the drought. However, the Saloum estuary remains a totally inverse estuary, while for the Casamance River, the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) is the location of the salinity maximum, and it moves according to the seasons from a location 1&ndash, 10 km downwards from the upstream estuary entry, during the dry season, to a location 40&ndash, 70 km downwards from this point, during the rainy season. These observations fit with the functioning of the mangrove, the West African mangrove being among the few in the world that are markedly increasing since the beginning of the 1990s and the end of the dry period, as mangrove growth is favored by the relative salinity reduction. Finally, one of the inverse estuary behavior factors is the low fresh water incoming from the continent. The small area of the Casamance and Saloum basins (20,150 and 26,500 km&sup2, respectively) is to be compared with the basins of their two main neighbor basins, the Gambia River and the Senegal River, which provide significant fresh water discharge to their estuary.

14. How does initial soil moisture influence the hydrological response? A case study from southern France

Abstract

The Cévennes-Vivarais region in southern France is prone to high intensity and long lasting rainfalls that can lead to flash floods which are one of the most hazardous natural risks in Europe. The results of numerous studies show that besides rainfall depth and intensity and catchment characteristics such as topography, geology, land use and hydraulic routing, the catchment's initial soil moisture also impacts the hydrological response to rain events. The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between catchment mean initial soil moisture θ~ini and the hydrological response that is quantified using the event-based runoff coefficient ϕev in the two nested catchments of the Gazel (3.4 km2) and the Claduègne (43 km2). To this end, two research questions are addressed: (1) How heterogeneous are soil moisture patterns in space and time and do they correlate with land use? (2) How does soil moisture at the event onset affect the hydrological response? The estimation of soil moisture at catchment scale is hindered by high spatial and temporal variability. A sampling setup including 45 permanently installed frequency domain reflectancy probes that continuously measure volumetric soil moisture at three depths is applied. Additionally, on-alert measurements of soil moisture in the topsoil at ≈ 10 locations in each one of 11 plots are conducted. Thus, catchment mean soil moisture can be confidently assessed with a standard error of the mean of ≤ 1.7 vol% over a wide range of soil moisture conditions. ϕev is calculated from high-resolution discharge and precipitation data for several rain events with a cumulative precipitation Pcum ranging from less than 5 mm to more than 80 mm. Because of the high uncertainty of ϕev associated to the hydrograph separation method, ϕev is calculated with several methods, including graphical methods, digital filters and a tracer based method. The results indicate that the hydrological response depends on θ~ini : the seasonal as well as the within-event discharge dynamics follow that of soil moisture. During dry conditions ϕev is consistently close to zero, even for events with high and intense precipitation. Above a threshold of θ~ini = 34 vol% ϕev can reach values up to 0.99 but there is a high scatter. Some variability can be explained with a weak correlation of ϕev with Pcum and rain intensity, but a considerable part of the variability remains unexplained. It is concluded that threshold-based methods can be helpful to prevent overestimation of the hydrological response during dry catchment conditions. The impact of soil moisture on the hydrological response during wet catchment conditions, however, is still insufficiently understood and cannot be generalized based on the present results.

Abstract

Forests are thought to play an important role in the regional dynamics of the West African monsoon, through their capacity to extract water from a permanent and deep groundwater table to the atmosphere even during the dry season. It should be the case for riparian forests too, as these streambank forests are key landscape elements in Sudanian West Africa. The interplay of riparian forest and groundwater in the local hydrodynamics was investigated, by quantifying their contribution to the water balance. Field observations from a comprehensively instrumented hillslope in northern Benin were used. Particular attention was paid to measurements of actual evapotranspiration, soil water and deep groundwater levels. A vertical 2-D hydrological modelling approach using the Hydrus software was used as a testing tool to understand the interactions between the riparian area and the groundwater. The model was calibrated and evaluated using a multi-criteria approach (reference simulation). A virtual experiment, including three other simulations, was designed (no forest, no groundwater, neither forest nor groundwater). The model correctly simulated the hydrodynamics of the hillslope regarding vadose zone dynamics, deep groundwater fluctuation and actual evapotranspiration dynamics. The virtual experiment showed that the riparian forest transpiration depleted the deep groundwater table level and disconnected it from the river, which is consistent with the observations. The riparian forest and the deep groundwater table actually form an interacting transpiration system: the high transpiration rate in the riparian area was shown to be due to the existence of the water table, supplied by downslope lateral water flows within the hillslope soil layer. The simulated riparian transpiration rate was practically steady all year long, around 7.6 mm d−1. This rate lies within high-end values of similar study results. The riparian forest as simulated here contributes to 37% of the annual hillslope transpiration, and reaches 57% in the dry season, whereas it only covers 5% of the hillslope area.

Abstract

La hausse des écoulements observée au Sahel pendant les années de sécheresse a amené de nombreux chercheurs à s’intéresser aux propriétés hydrodynamiques superficielles des sols et à leur impact sur les volumes ruisselés. Ce travail porte sur les processus responsables de la production du ruissellement dans deux bassins versants expérimentaux situés sur le socle cristallin de l’ouest du Niger. Il vise à caractériser le fonctionnement hydrodynamique à trois échelles spatiales emboitées. À l’échelle ponctuelle (50 cm²), l’étude porte sur l’infiltrabilité des couches supérieures (0-10 cm) du sol pour plusieurs états de surface. Sa valeur asymptotique est ici déterminée grâce aux mesures de conductivité hydraulique à saturation (Ks) effectuées in situ. À l’échelle de la surface élémentaire, les ruissellements produits sont mesurés sur des parcelles expérimentales de 10 m² tandis qu’à l’échelle du bassin versant (5 ha), les écoulements concentrés sont contrôlés par des stations hydrométriques installées à l’exutoire de ces bassins. Les mesures effectuées montrent que les conductivités hydrauliques sont faibles et varient de 10 mm.h-1 (valeur minimale, mesurée sur la croûte d’érosion ERO) à 40 mm.h-1 (valeur maximale mesurée sur la surface cultivée en moyenne sur la saison). Les coefficients de ruissellement sont en ordre inverse, de 0,60 sur ERO à 0,25 sur la surface cultivée. Les coefficients d’écoulement des bassins sont de 0,41 et 0,28, respectivement pour les bassins non cultivé et cultivé (culture pluviale). Les résultats obtenus à ces trois échelles sont cohérents et montrent la forte capacité de production de ruissellement des bassins étudiés qui découle de la faible infiltrabilité des états de surface et de la faible ré-infiltration, dans le réseau hydrographique, des écoulements produits sur les versants. Cette dernière ne représente ainsi que 4 % de la pluie annuelle alors qu'elle peut dépasser 50 % pour des bassins de même taille en zone sédimentaire. En conséquence, une pluie de 2 à 4 mm tombant sur ces bassins suffit pour générer de l’écoulement en raison de la faible épaisseur (moins de 20 cm) du dépôt sableux couvrant les lits des ravines. À l’échelle des surfaces élémentaires et des bassins étudiés, on note la quasi indépendance du fonctionnement hydrodynamique à l’état hydrique initial. The observed increase of the catchments flow values in the Sahel during the drought years has exacerbated the interest for the studies on the superficial hydrodynamic properties of soils and their impact onto runoff volumes. This work focuses on the processes responsible for the flow production within two experimental catchments situated in the granitic basement of Western Niger. It aims at characterizing the hydrodynamical functioning at three nested spatial scales. At point scale (50 cm²), soil surface infiltrability (0-10 cm) is determined for different surface features through hydraulic conductivity (Ks) measurements carried out in situ. At the plot scale, runoff is measured from 10 m² experimental plots while at catchment scale (5 ha), stream flow is controlled by stream gauges at the exutories. Measurements show low values of hydraulic conductivity ranging from 10 mm.h-1 (minimal value measured on erosion crusts ERO) to 40 mm.h-1 (maximal value measured on cultivated sites in seasonal average). Runoff coefficients are inversely ranked, from 0.60 on ERO to 0.25 on cultivated surface. Catchment scale runoff coefficients are 0.41 and 0.28 for the not cultivated and the cultivated basins, respectively. Results obtained at these three scales are consistent and reveal the strong runoff production ability of these granitic catchments resulting from both low point scale infiltrability and small re-infiltration of runoff water within the stream network. This last component represents only 4% of annual rainfall while it may reach more than 50% for sedimentary catchments of similar size. Within these catchments, thus, a 2-4 mm rainfall is sufficient to generate a flow at the outlet due to rather small (less than 20 cm) sand deposits covering the stream beds. Finally, both at the plot and at the catchment scales, hydrodynamical functioning was found quasi independent on the initial water content.

Abstract

Topsoil field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, Kfs , is a parameter that controls the partition of rainfall between infiltration and runoff and is a key parameter in most distributed hydrological models. There is a mismatch between the scale of local in situ Kfs measurements and the scale at which the parameter is required in models for regional mapping. Therefore methods for extrapolating local Kfs values to larger mapping units are required. The paper explores the feasibility of mapping Kfs in the Cévennes-Vivarais region, in south-east France, using more easily available GIS data concerning geology and land cover. Our analysis makes uses of a data set from infiltration measurements performed in the area and its vicinity for more than ten years. The data set is composed of Kfs derived from infiltration measurements performed using various methods: Guelph permeameters, double ring and single ring infiltrotrometers and tension infiltrometers. The different methods resulted in a large variation in Kfs up to several orders of magnitude. A method is proposed to pool the data from the different infiltration methods to create an equivalent set of Kfs . Statistical tests showed significant differences in Kfs distributions in function of different geological formations and land cover. Thus the mapping of Kfs at regional scale was based on geological formations and land cover. This map was compared to a map based on the Rawls and Brakensiek (RB) pedotransfer function (mainly based on texture) and the two maps showed very different patterns. The RB values did not fit observed equivalent Kfs at the local scale, highlighting that soil texture alone is not a good predictor of Kfs .

Abstract

The Mediterranean area is prone to intense rainfall events triggering flash floods, characterized by very short response times that sometimes lead to dramatic consequences in terms of casualties and damages. These events can affect large territories, but their impact may be very local in catchments that are generally ungauged. These events remain difficult to predict and the processes leading to their generation still need to be clarified. The HyMeX initiative (Hydrological Cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment, 2010-2020) aims at increasing our understanding of the water cycle in the Mediterranean basin, in particular in terms of extreme events. In order to better understand processes leading to flash floods, a four-year experiment (2012-2015) was conducted in the Cevennes region (South-East) France as part of the FloodScale project. Both continuous and opportunistic measurements during floods were conducted in two large catchments (Ardeche and Gard rivers) with nested instrumentation from the hillslopes to catchments of about 1, 10, 100 to 1000 km2 covering contrasted geology and land use. Continuous measurements include distributed rainfall, stream water level, discharge, water temperature and conductivity and soil moisture measurements. Opportunistic measurements include surface soil moisture and geochemistry sampling during events and gauging of floods using non-contact methods: portable radars to measure surface water velocity or image sequence analysis using LS-PIV (Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry). During the period 2012-2014, and in particular during autumn 2014, several intense events affected the catchments and provided very rich data sets. Data collection was complemented with modelling activity aiming at simulating observed processes. The modelling strategy was setup through a wide range of scales, in order to test hypotheses about physical processes at the smallest scales, and aggregated functioning hypothesis at the largest scales. During the project, a focus was also put on the improvement of rainfall fields characterization both in terms of spatial and temporal variability and in terms of uncertainty quantification. Rainfall reanalyses combining radar and rain gauges were developed. Rainfall simulation using a stochastic generator was also performed. Another effort was dedicated to the improvement of discharge estimation during floods and the quantification of streamflow uncertainties using Bayesian techniques. The paper summarizes the main results gained from the observations and the subsequent modelling activity in terms of flash flood process understanding at the various scales. It concludes on how the new acquired knowledge can be used for prevention and management of flash floods.

24. Modeling flow and transport in irrigation catchments: 1. Development and testing of subcatchment model

Abstract

The development of a physically based model for flow and transport in hillslope transects is presented. In the second paper of this set, Connell et al. [this issue] use this model as the fundamental unit in a catchment application to describe flow within flood-irrigated catchments. The hillslope transect model is based on the assumption that surface and groundwater flow is one-dimensional, flowing down the topographic gradient. This approximation is particularly accurate for flood-irrigated catchments where the land surface is divided into irrigation bays. To maximize the model's utility for catchment modeling, a number of simplifications to the process descriptions are introduced to reduce model complexity and computational overhead. The description of the unsaturated zone makes a distinction between infiltration and capillary rise, allowing infiltration to be a mixture of macropore and matrix flow and capillary rise to be a porous medium process. The capillary rise description exploits the transition in flow behavior as soil dries from being atmosphere-limited to profile-controlled. An efficient Laplace space quasi-analytical solution to Richards' equation is used for this second stage. This quasi-analytical procedure is also used to solve the advection-dispersion equation for unsaturated solute transport and for Darcian groundwater flow. The model is tested through application to a field site where detailed observations of surface and subsurface flow and transport are available. The good agreement with observations in both calibration and long-duration simulations of a wide range of physical processes promotes confidence in the model representation.

25. Transient Flow from Tension Infiltrometers II. Four Methods to Determine Sorptivity and Conductivity

In Vandervaere et al. (2000) it was shown that the transient regime of axisymmetric infiltration can be described by a two-term equation with one term proportional to the square root of time and the other term proportional to time. The two corresponding coefficients, C, and C 2 , are functions of the hydraulic conductivity, K, and the sorptivity, S. In this paper we propose four different methods to achieve the determination of S and K. The four methods differ by the number of disk radii and the number of supply pressure head values which are utilized. We show that the accuracy of a given method is highly dependent on the combination of S and K values obtained. Three situations can be distinguished, depending on the disk radius: (i) the flow is dominated by the lateral capillary term; (ii) the flow is dominated by the gravity term; (iii) lateral capillary and gravity terms have equivalent weights. The seven model soils tested here all correspond to the first situation with usual disk radius values. This tends to show that a precise estimation of K is unlikely from disk infiltrometer data. We introduce a new time scale, t sab , which generalizes the concepts corresponding to the two well known time scales t grav and t geom . We propose a guideline for the investigator to choose between all existing methods of analysis that use steady or transient flow. Finally, the four new methods are tested against numerically simulated tests with Grenoble sand and Yolo light clay.

26. Transient Flow from Tension Infiltrometers I. The Two-Parameter Equation

Abstract

Tension disk infiltrometer experiments are generally conducted until apparent steady state is reached because most of the methods of analysis are based on Wooding's solution for steady state flux. However, the time necessary to reach steady state may be a penalizing aspect for soils with low permeability and the information contained in the transient stages is not utilized. Moreover, these methods assume homogeneous soil and a uniform initial water content, which may be unrealistic when a large volume of soil is sampled. In this series, we propose and compare several new methods of analysis that are based on the transient stage of axisymmetric infiltration. In the first part, we show that a two-parameter equation-one term linear in square root of time and one term linear in time-adequately describes the transient flow from the disk infiltrometer for both simulated and laboratory tests. The technique used for the determination of the two coefficients must meet two criteria; it must verify the validity of the two-term equation throughout the duration of the experiment, and it must account for the early-time perturbation that is induced by the sand-contact layer placed between the disk and the soil. We show that the best technique consists in linearizing the data by differentiating cumulative infiltration with respect to the square root of time. Direct nonlinear fitting on cumulative infiltration or infiltration flux is likely to lead to unacceptable errors, either because of the undetected invalidity of the two-parameter equation or arising from the influence of the contact layer.

27. Optimal management of water movement in irrigation bays

Abstract

Salinisation of Australia's agricultural lands and inland waterways is a widespread problem and its management involves significant financial resources. A key component in understanding catchment salt export is interpreting the on-land processes which determine runoff and groundwater recharge/discharge. This paper presents a decision support system for irrigation management based around a predictive model for water and salt movement within irrigation bays. The “bay model” employs a physically-based formulation, where: groundwater movement is explained by Darcy's equation; capillary rise by a quasi–equilibrium approach and overland flow by a Mannings type equation. The bay model is tested through application to a field site where water and salt transport processes were intensively monitored over a two-year period. Model predictions of overland flow and transport, groundwater and unsaturated water movement are shown to be in close agreement with field observations. An objective function is defined which incorporates irrigation efficiency (drain flow), the soil moisture deficit after irrigation, and the duration of surface ponding during irrigation events. The response of the constraints which make up this objective function are investigated with respect to irrigation practice and, as a result, the objective function is refined. This objective function is then incorporated into an optimisation algorithm (Powell's method) which is used to identify the management arrangements which lead to efficient water use.

b ( Laboratoire d'etude des Transferts en Hydrologie et En˝ironment LTHE, CNRS URA 1512, ´ ) Abstract An inverse procedure was used to estimate the soil hydraulic characteristics of a two-layered soil system—soil surface crust and subsoil—from data obtained during a tension-disc infiltration experiment. The inverse procedure combined the Levenberg-Marquardt nonlinear parameter optimization method with a numerical solution of the axisymmetric variably-saturated flow equation. The objective function was defined in terms of the cumulative infiltration curve and the final water content measured directly below the tension-disc infiltrometer at the end of the experiment; this final water content was assumed to correspond to the final supply pressure head. We analyzed two infiltration experiments carried out with a 25-cm diameter tension-disc infiltrom- eter. One experiment was carried out on a two-layered system, and a second after removal of the surface crust covering the sandy subsoil. Both experiments were performed with six consecutive supply tensions. We first analyzed the infiltration experiment for the subsoil only, thus yielding its hydraulic characteristics. Subsequent analysis of the infiltration experiment for the two-layered system with known hydraulic properties of the subsoil provided estimates of the hydraulic properties of the surface crust. Abstract

Within the scope of the HAPEX-Sahel experiment, the hydrological functioning of two small nested catchments was studied at two different scales: the plot scale (of the order of 100 m2) and the catchment scale (0.2 km2). At local scale, four runoff plots were set-up on the typical soil surface conditions observed on the catchments (plateau bare soil, two plots on fallow grassland) and an additional one was installed on a millet field. soil moisture investigations at the plot scale have shown that infiltration was limited between 0.6 to 2 m deep on three sites, but was deeper than 3.4 m on the most pervious site (millet). The maximum water storage on all the sites was found to be reached at the maximum activity of the rainy season (late August), and not at the end of the season. During the dry months, the soil was fully dried off by evapotranspiration, resulting in the absence of inter-annual soil water storage. No influence of vegetation cover on runoff was observed on the fallow sites, but runoff generation was found to be very sensitive to tillage on the millet field. The parameter Pu, calculated from a rainfall hyetograph and defined as the rainfall depth that can actually produce runoff, is shown to be relevant to compute runoff on untilled soils, as it explains more than 87% of the variance in runoff depth. On tilled soils, it is necessary to take into account additionally the temporal evolution of the soil surface, especially the days after weeding operations. Simple linear relationships were derived to compute runoff depth from Pu on the plots for the most typical soil moisture conditions observed, and modified SCS equations have been derived for the catchments. Using the linear equations derived at the plot scale in a simple, empirical, semi-distributed model lead to formulate the assumption that the partial source area concept applied on the catchments. Analysis of discharge data at the catchment scale highlights that seepage through the bottom of a gully between two gauging stations leads to the abstraction of non negligible volumes of water. Moreover, the water totally infiltrates in a spreading zone downstream from the outlet of the largest catchment showing that discontinuities occur in the surface water transmission within a catena. Such discontinuities constitute a major problem for the concern of aggregation of hydrologic processes.

Abstract

In the framework of the HAPEX-Sahel experiment, a data set was gathered on a fallow savannah site of the Central East Supersite. This includes 54 days of atmospheric forcing (air temperature and humidity, wind speed, solar and long-wave radiation and rainfall), net radiation, sensible, latent and soil heat fluxes and soil temperature series at a time step of 20 min. Furthermore, 17 soil moisture profiles, the evolution of the leaf area indices and some soil characteristics were available. The data set was used, at the field scale, to calibrate and validate the SiSPAT (simple soil plant atmosphere transfer) model, a 1D model of coupled heat and mass transfer in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. The objectives of the study were (i) to assess the performances of the model in the prediction of the diurnal cycle of net radiation, turbulent fluxes, soil temperatures and the evolution of soil water content over a period of 54 days (day of the year 239–292, 1992), characterized by early stage intense rainfall events and fast drying afterwards, (ii) to analyse the influence of soil surface crust on the water balance and (iii) to identify the 1D modelling limits when the surface area consists of two strates: a ground sparse herb layer, characterized by a large spatial variability of surface properties and water content with scattered bushes. The model was calibrated over a 2-week period and then run over the whole 54-day period. We were able to reproduce the main characteristics of the observed net radiation, turbulent fluxes, soil temperature and soil moisture for the intense rainfall events and for an elongated dry period. Nevertheless, when the crust was not taken into account, the rainfall-runoff-infiltration process and the evapotranspiration after rain were poorly predicted (overestimation of evapotranspiration of infiltration). When a crust was considered to model the water balance at the field scale, its influence was found to be substantial on the runoff generation and the infiltration, and consequently on the bare soil evaporation. However, runoff predictions were much larger than the observations. Indeed, at the field scale, no runoff was generally observed. Lateral redistribution of water between crusted and noncrusted zones was observed in the plot. However, this cannot be taken into account with the presented 1D deterministic modelling. Hence further model development is needed to yield a better representation of soil water fluxes at the field scale.

Abstract

Although soil crusting has long been recognized as a crucial runoff factor in the Sahel, very few field methods have been developed for the measurement of the crust hydraulic conductivity, which is difficult to achieve because of the small thickness of most surface crusts. A field method, based on the simultaneous use of disc infiltrometers and minitensiometers is proposed for determining the crust hydraulic conductivity and sorptivity near saturation. On crusted soils, the classical analysis of the steady state water flow was found to be inadequate. The proposed method is based on sorptivity measurements performed at different water supply potentials and uses recent developments of transient flow analysis. A minitensiometer, placed horizontally at the crust-subsoil interface, facilitated the analysis of the infiltration regime for the crust solely. Results are shown for representative soil units of the East Central Super Site of the HAPEX-Sahel experiment: fallow grasslands, millet fields and tiger bush. Non-crusted soils were also considered and validated the transient method as demonstrated by comparison with Wooding's steady state solution. This validation was obtained in the case of fallow grasslands soil but not for the millet fields. In this latter case, the persistent effects of localized working of the soil to remove weeds caused large variations in infiltration fluxes between the sampling points, which tended to dominate over effects of differences in applied potential. For the tiger bush crusted soils, the ratio of the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the crust to that of the underlying soil ranges from 13 to 16, depending on whether the crust is of a structural (ST) or sedimentation (SED) type. The method also allows the estimation of a functional mean pore size, consistent with laboratory measurements, and 40% less for the crusts in comparison with the underlying soil. The results obtained here will be used in hydrological models to predict the partition of rainfall between infiltration and runoff.

Abstract

International audience; Les risques hydrométéorologiques sont au coeur du programme de recherche HyMeX sur le cycle de l'eau en Méditerranée. HyMeX a pour ambition d'améliorer leur prévision, de mieux connaître leur variabilité à l'échelle pluriannuelle et de renseigner sur leur évolution, dans le contexte du changement climatique. À cette fin, deux campagnes de mesures dédiées à ces événements extrêmes (SOP1 : pluies intenses et crues rapides ; SOP2 : vents forts et formation d'eaux denses) sont organisées en Méditerranée nord-occidentale, entre septembre 2012 et mars 2013.

Abstract

International audience; Afrique de l'Ouest a connu des conditions de sécheresse depuis la fin des années 1960. Cette tendance a été particulièrement évident dans le Sahel, mais semble avoir atténué dans la dernière décennie dans les régions orientales et centrales de cette région. D'autre part, la pluviométrie annuelle reste très faible dans la partie ouest du Sahel [ 1 ]. Une diminution correspondante a également été observé dans le débit moyen annuel des fleuves Sénégal et Niger, qui sont le plus grand dans la région et principalement alimenté par l'eau provenant de régions tropicales humides. Toutefois, le pourcentage de diminution du débit annuel moyen était presque deux fois plus grande que la diminution des précipitations [ 2 ] pour la période 1970-2010. Des tendances similaires ont été observées sur des réseaux hydrographiques plus petits. En revanche, même si le Sahel et la plupart de l'Afrique de l'Ouest ont connu la sécheresse aussi importante au cours des 40 dernières années, les coefficients de ruissellement et des débits d'eau ont augmenté dans la plupart des régions du Sahel. Ce phénomène a été appelé «Le Sahel Paradox" après l'augmentation de la nappe phréatique au Niger depuis les années 1960, a été nommé le paradoxe de Niamey et attribués à des changements importants dans l'utilisation des terres. Le les (Afrique multidisciplinaire de la mousson d'analyse) programmes AMMA HAPEX-Sahel (hydrologique et Expérience atmosphérique pilote) et ont fourni, parmi de nombreux résultats complets, les mesures de valeur portant sur les variations spatiales et temporelles de la teneur en eau du sol sahélienne ainsi que de l'infiltration de l'eau à travers les couches profondes du sol de la zone non saturée. Le but de ce chapitre est de fournir un aperçu du comportement hydrologique en Afrique de l'Ouest basée sur le point, locale, méso et échelles régionales observations.

Abstract

International audience; D'initiative française, le projet international HyMeX a pour objectif d'améliorer la compréhension du cycle de l'eau en Méditerranée, de sa variabilité, de l'échelle de l'événement météorologique aux échelles saisonnières et interannuelles, et de ses caractéristiques sur une décennie, dans un contexte de changement global. Le projet est motivé par le rôle déterminant des processus de mésoéchelle, couplés entre l'atmosphère, la mer et la terre, sur la variabilité du système climatique et sur le déclenchement d'événements hydrométéorologiques extrêmes (précipitations et inondations, vents forts et convection océanique, canicules et sécheresses). Le projet vise enfin à évaluer les conséquences de ces événements extrêmes sur la vulnérabilité sociale et économique de cette région et sa capacité d'adaptation.

Abstract

Watershed management requires systematic measurements in order to reach good resources control. Some processes conditioning water transfers in the environment such as rain, run-off, infiltration, deep percolation, water uptake by plants, and evapotranspiration should be quantified to improve our knowledge of hydrological characterization and of the best management practices (Descroix/Nouvelot, 1997; Descroix et al., 2004). This work presents infiltration measurements and results produced with the Suction Disc Infiltrometer method realized in the Upper Nazas River Basin. This basin is the main water supply for Irrigation District 017 in northern Mexico, called the Lagunera region. Results show that soil surface controls the hydrodynamic behaviour of the watershed. Land use changes can be linked with productive practices that are causing strong hydrological consequences.

Abstract

In Part 1 of this paper, an error analysis for estimating the variance of volumetric water content, soil water storage and actual evapotranspiration from a local standpoint was presented. This second part extends the analysis to the case of spatial average values corresponding to a field scale. For a low number of sampling points, the location component related to the spatial variability is the major component of the total variance of the foregoing variables. Results are presented for the two maize fields described in Part 1 and comparison is made with values of evapotranspiration provided by atmospheric latent heat flux measurements for one of them. Finally, the determination of the calibration, instrument, integration and location components of the variance of a given variable leads to an estimation of the number of sampling points required to estimate field average values with a prescribed degree of precision. This number varies significantly depending on the variable considered — water content, water storage or evapotranspiration — and proved to be different for the two fields.

Abstract

The study was aimed at evaluating the effect of rainfall and tillage-induced soil surface characteristics on infiltration and runoff on a 2.8 ha catchment located in the central region of Senegal. This was done by simulating 30 min rain storms applied at a constant rate of about 70 mm h(-1), on 10 runoff microplots of 2 m(2), five being freshly harrowed perpendicularly to the slope and five along the slope (1%) of the catchment. Runoff was automatically recorded at the outlet of each plot. Hydraulic properties such as capillary sorptivity and hydraulic conductivity of the sandy loam soil close to saturation were determined by running 48 infiltration tests with a tension disc infiltrometer. That allowed the calculation of a mean characteristic pore size hydraulically active and a time to ponding. Superficial water storage capacity was estimated using data collected with an electronic relief meter. Because the soil was subject to surface crusting, crust-types as well as their spatial distribution within micro-plots and their evolution with time were identified and monitored by taking photographs at different times after tillage. The results showed that the surface crust-types as well as their tillage dependent dynamics greatly explain the decrease of hydraulic conductivity and sorptivity as the cumulative rainfall since tillage increases. The exponential decaying rates were found to be significantly greater for the soil harrowed along the slope (where the runoff crust-type covers more than 60% of the surface after 140 mm of rain) than across to the slope (where crusts are mainly of structural (60%) and erosion (40%) types). That makes ponding time smaller and runoff more important. Also it was shown that soil hydraulic properties after about 160 mm of rain were close to those of untilled plot not submitted to any rain. RESUME . La methode d'evaporation WIND avec ou sans ventilateur a ete utilisee pour traiter 18 echantillons de sols. Les resultats ont permis d'ajuster par methode inverse les parametres de la courbe de retention pour chaque echantillon en utilisant le modele de vanGenuchten avec la condition de Burdine ou de Mualem. En ce qui concerne l'ajustement de la courbe de conductivite hydraulique les donnees issues d'essais d'infiltration ont ete utilisees pour palier le fait que la saturation lors des essais couvrait des valeurs de 0,20 a 0,60. Dans la zone proche de la saturation le modele de vanGenuchten avec condition de Mualem a donne de meilleurs resultats. ABSTRACT. Eighteen samples were treated in the laboratory according to the Wind evaporation method using a lamp with/without a ventilator. The parameters of the retention curve of each sample were adjusted to the vanGenuchten model with Burdine and Mualem condition using inverse method. The covered saturation range was between 0.20 to 0.60 only. To overcome this difficulty in modelling hydraulic conductivity, we used data close to saturation determined by in situ infiltration tests. In the zone close to saturation, the vanGenuchten with Mualem condition (vGM) model agrees better with the data resulting from the in-situ tests. Abstract

This article describes measurements made at each site and for each vegetation cover as part of the soils program for the HAPEX-Sahel regional scale experiment. The measurements were based on an initial sampling scheme and included profile soil water content, surface soil water content, soil water potential, infiltration rates, additional measurements on core samples, and grain size analysis. The measurements were used to categorize the state of the surface and profile soil water regimes during the experiment and to derive functional relationships for the soil water characteristic curve, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function, and infiltration function. Sample results for different supersites and different vegetation covers are presented showing soil water profiles and total soil water storage on days corresponding to the experimental 'Golden Days'. Sample results are also presented for spatial and temporal distribution of surface moisture content and infiltration tests. The results demonstrate that the major experimental objective of monitoring the supersites during the most rapid vegetative growth stage with the largest change of the surface energy balance following the rainy season was very nearly achieved. Separation of the effects of probable root activity and drainage of the soil profile is possible. The potential for localized advection between the bare soil and vegetation strips of the tiger bush sites is demonstrated.

Abstract

Soil surface characteristics (SSCs) have a strong influence on the infiltration properties at the soil surface. They can explain spatial variations in the infiltration processes observed under natural rainfall for relatively little-differentiated material and can help us to understand the surface and subsurface hydrology of landslides, representative of some of black marls landscapes of the French southern Alps. This paper presents the results of investigations into the influence of SSCs using careful morphological description, in situ tension-disc infiltrometry and statistical analysis (hierarchical ascending classification and stepwise discriminant analysis). The site studied is the Super-Sauze earthflow. The selected infiltration and runoff variables were described for 233 microplots chosen all over the earthflow. The results show that an approach based on a description of relevant variables influencing water infiltration can validate a typology based on ‘expert’ knowledge. Hydraulic conductivity at saturation was measured on 36 undisturbed soil cores and at low negative pressure heads on 83 microplots: the dispersion exceeds three orders of magnitude at each pressure head. A statistical analysis of the data set obtained by describing selected variables showed the relevance of the black marl descriptors when defining types of SSC that enable us to distinguish significant hydrodynamical behaviour. This leads us to suggest a distribution of hydraulic conductivity curves near saturation for each SSC type, which can be used as a key to distribute local hydraulic conductivity values adapted to black marl hillslopes. As well as the types of SSC at a microplot scale leading to types of hydrodynamic properties, the typology of combinations of SSCs at a coarser scale should lead to types of hydrological response and to identification of hydrological and geomorphological response units. Abstract

This work aims at characterizing and comparing the hydrodynamical functioning at several spatial scales within the granitic-basement and sedimentary zones of Western Niger. Then, a simple hydrological model that could be suitable for use at larger scales is proposed and tested.Qualitatively, the two geological domains have common and specific surface features.The experimental work carried out onto common surface features (biological crust, BIOL; erosion crust, ERO; fallow structural surface, ST and cultivated, C) shows that, at the point scale, ERO has the same hydraulic conductivity K value in both contexts. On the other hand, surfaces features C and especially ST have lower K values in granitic context.Monitoring of the ST and C sites along the rainy season proved the stationarity of the ST conductivity value. On the contrary, K varies widely with the amount of rain received from an initial value of 170 mm/h after weeding down to 20 mm/h (i.e. the ST measured value) after 70 mm of rain and even 10 mm/h after 180 mm of rain. This variation shows the short-term benefit of weeding onto infiltration but a degradation of the soil surface on the long term.At the plot scale (10 m2), runoff measurements are consistent with point measurements. ERO has the same runoff coefficient (Kr) in granitic and sedimentary zones while ST and C surfaces have a higher Kr in granitic context.Runoff monitoring of the granitic site cultivated plots showed that from a total of 63 rain events between 2011 and 2013, 22 had a Kr value higher than the average value (0.25) from which 2/3 are observed after the surface had received more than 70 mm rain after weeding.Results obtained at the two scales (point and 10-m2 plot) are thus consistent and show that the cultivated surface gets crusted and may produce runoff more than fallow ST sites and as much as ERO features.At the basin scale (5 ha), Kr values are higher in the granitic site, not only because of the higher Kr value for a given surface feature but also because of the specific low-infiltrating surfaces which are granite outcrops and gravel crusts (Kr = 0.58).At the three previous scales (point, plot and small basin), runoff volume was found independent of soil initial moisture.Using the previous point-scale results in a Green-Ampt infiltration model led to calibrate the wetting front pressure head for each surface feature and to satisfactorily describe runoff volumes obtained at the plot scale.By estimating runoff with the Green-Ampt infiltration model at any given point, basin-scale hydrograms were obtained by adding the contribution of all elementary surfaces. Assuming no re-infiltration of runoff water within the basins, a simple transfer function was chosen accounting for the distance of each surface to the hydrological network, a constant water velocity of 0.05 m.s-1 and a volume of 3-4 mm of water necessary to fill the kori sand cover, which is much less than that in the sedimentary context. Finally, simulated hydrograms reproduce nicely the measured ones, which offers the perspective of applying some principles of the model to larger basins., Ce travail vise à caractériser et comparer les fonctionnements hydrodynamiques à plusieurs échelles spatiales en zones cristalline et sédimentaire de l’Ouest nigérien et par suite à proposer un modèle simple de fonctionnement hydrodynamique des bassins expérimentaux cristallins qui soit potentiellement transposable aux échelles supérieures.L’analyse qualitative du paysage montre que ces deux domaines ont des états de surface communs et spécifiques.L’étude expérimentale effectuée sur les états de surface communs (surface biologique, BIOL, d’érosion, ERO, structurale, ST-jac, et cultivée, C) montre, à l’échelle ponctuelle, que la surface ERO a la même valeur de conductivité hydraulique K dans les deux contextes. En revanche, les surfaces C et surtout ST ont des conductivités plus faibles en zone cristalline. Le suivi temporel effectué sur ces deux états de surface en zone cristalline a mis en évidence la stationnarité de la conductivité sur ST (jachère de 5 ans) durant la saison des pluies tandis qu'elle varie fortement sur la surface cultivée en fonction du calendrier cultural et du cumul de pluie. K décroit d’une valeur initiale de 170 mm/h après le sarclage à 20 mm/h (soit la conductivité mesurée sur ST) lorsque la surface sarclée reçoit un cumul de pluie de l’ordre de 70 mm. La conductivité atteint même la valeur de 10 mm/h après un cumul de pluie de 180 mm. Cette variation de la conductivité montre l’avantage à court terme du sarclage qui améliore l’infiltration mais qui à long terme tend à dégrader la surface.Les résultats obtenus à l’échelle de la surface élémentaire (10 m²) valident bien les mesures ponctuelles. La surface ERO a le même coefficient du ruissellement (Kr) en zones cristalline et sédimentaire tandis que les surfaces ST et cultivée ont un Kr plus élevé en zone cristalline. L’analyse de l’évolution temporelle du Kr de la surface cultivée du socle a montré que sur 63 événements pluvieux observés entre 2011 et 2013, 22 ont un Kr supérieur à la moyenne (qui est de 0.25) dont près de 2/3 sont observés après plus de 70 mm de pluie qui suivent le sarclage. Les résultats obtenus à ces deux échelles (ponctuelle et surface élémentaire) sont donc cohérents et montrent que la surface cultivée s’encroûte et peut ruisseler plus que la surface ST et autant que la surface ERO. A l’échelle du bassin versant (5 ha), les Kr sont plus élevés sur les bassins cristallins à cause de ces fortes valeurs de Kr des surfaces élémentaires mais aussi parce qu’ils sont composés d’autres surfaces à forte capacité ruisselante que sont la surface d’affleurement du socle altéré et la surface gravillonnaire ayant un Kr de 0.58. A ces trois échelles (ponctuelle, élémentaire, petit bassin), on note la non-dépendance du fonctionnement hydrodynamique à l'état hydrique initial.L’exploitation des résultats ponctuels obtenus sur le site cristallin (conductivité moyenne de BIOL, ERO, et ST et conductivité variable sur la surface cultivée) dans le modèle de Green et Ampt a permis de caler le potentiel de front par état de surface et décrire de manière très satisfaisante les ruissellements mesurés sur les surfaces élémentaires. Sur la base des ruissellements ainsi calculés, nous avons simulé les hydrogrammes à l’exutoire des bassins expérimentaux en assimilant le fonctionnement de ces derniers à celui des surfaces élémentaires en spatialisant leur infiltrabilité. En faisant l’hypothèse d’une ré-infiltration nulle sur les versants, nous avons appliqué une fonction de transfert simple prenant en compte la distance de chaque surface élémentaire par rapport au réseau hydrographique, une vitesse d'écoulement constante et une pluie imbibante de 3 à 4 mm devant saturer la couverture sableuse de ravine, ce qui est beaucoup moins qu'en zone sédimentaire. Finalement, les hydrogrammes simulés reproduisent assez bien les caractéristiques des hydrogrammes mesurés, ce qui offre une perspective d’application de certains principes du modèle sur de plus grands bassins.
