The Bearn range, located to the north of the Axial Zone in the Western Pyrenees, is affected by numerous small magnitude seismic events. These events overlap an area characterised by specific geological structures which are interpreted to have resulted from multistage extensional and compressional deformation. An analysis of surface geology draped over DEM, together with field investigations, allow identification of two main shortening episodes with differing direction of contraction: D1 represents the inversion of the North-Pyrenean basin, whose Mesozoic infill was detached from highly extended crust and transported southwards over the necking zone and the northern margin of the Iberian plate; D2 corresponds to the collision stage, and is characterised in the study area by backfolding and backthrusting deformation coeval with uplift in the axial part of the chain due to thickening of the Iberian plate. The microseismicity appears to concentrate along the basal part of the inverted basin units (D1) where this initially low-angle thrust has been tilted and steepened during collision (D2). We propose that local steepening of this ancient inversion structure, which should not be named "North Pyrenean fault", provided the suitable dip for extensional solicitation in association with the present uplift of the Axial Zone, whatever the driving mechanism of this uplift could be.

Tunisia is part of the south-Tethyan margin, which comprises Triassic evaporites and a thick series of Jurassic and Cretaceous, mainly marine deposits, related to the Tethyan rifting evolution. A survey of various Cretaceous outcrops of central Tunisia (Kasserine-El Kef area), combined with literature descriptions, shows that the style of Albian deformation changes from the proximal (South) to the distal part (North) of the margin. The southern part is dominated by tilted blocks and growth faults, which evolve to the north to turtle-back and roll-over structures. Farther North, deformation is dominated by the extrusion of diapirs and salt walls. Such a distribution of deformation strongly suggests that the whole sedimentary cover glided northward on the Triassic evaporites during Albian times, as described for the Atlantic passive margin or for the Gulf of Mexico. Subsequently, these halokinetic structures have been folded during Alpine compressional tectonics.

Apatite fission track analysis of samples from the shoulder (marginal ridge) of the Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana transform contin- ental margin reveal a cooling of the margin between 85 and 65 Ma for the central and eastern parts of the ridge. All samples were heated in situ during sedimentary burial with a temperature >120 C, except for two samples located in the eastern part which were heated between 105 and 120 C. For the first time, age/depth diagram along a transform margin shows a shape involving erosion starting at the bottom of the continental slope, then stepping backwards towards the edge of the slope. This retrogressive erosion can result from the deepening of the lithospheric plate sliding along the transform margin, from thick continental crust to thin continental crust, and finally to oceanic crust. This process could be at the origin of the shoulder uplift by flexural response to the important crustal discharge (>2 km).

Sarcya 1 dive explored a previously unknown 12 My old submerged volcano, labelled Cornacya. A well developed fracturation is characterised by the following directions: N 170 to N–S, N 20 to N 40, N 90 to N 120, N 50 to N 70, which corresponds to the fracturation pattern of the Sardinian margin. The sampled lavas exhibit features of shoshonitic suites of intermediate composition and include amphibole-and mica-bearing lamprophyric xenoliths which are geochemically similar to Ti-poor lamproites. Mica compositions reflect chemical exchanges between the lamprophyre and its shoshonitic host rock suggesting their simultaneous emplacement. Nd compositions of the Cornacya K-rich suite indicate that continental crust was largely involved in the genesis of these rocks. The spatial association of the lamprophyre with the shoshonitic rocks is geochemically similar to K-rich and TiO2-poor igneous suites, emplaced in post-collisional settings. Among shoshonitic rocks, sample SAR 1-01 has been dated at 12.6±0.3 My using the 40Ar/39Ar method with a laser microprobe on single grains. The age of the Cornacya shoshonitic suite is similar to that of the Sisco lamprophyre from Corsica, which similarly is located on the western margin of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Thus, the Cornacya shoshonitic rocks and their lamprophyric xenolith and the Sisco lamprophyre could represent post-collisional suites emplaced during the lithospheric extension of the Corsica–Sardinia block, just after its rotation and before the Tyrrhenian sea opening. Drilling on the Sardinia margin (ODP Leg 107) shows that the upper levels of the present day margin (Hole 654) suffered tectonic subsidence before the lower part (Hole 652). The structure of this lower part is interpreted as the result of an eastward migration of the extension during Late Miocene and Early Pliocene times. Data of Cornacya volcano are in good agreement with this model and provide good chronological constraints for the beginning of the phenomenon.

The recent fault system of eastern Sicily can be identified in the Peloritan Mountains, in particular where it cross-cuts carbonate ranges in areas preserved from strong torrential erosion. The scarp of the Mount Kalfa fault results from normal sinistral slip at a mean rate of 0.9 mm·yr −1 during the Wurm to Present east-west extension. This normal fault belongs to the Apenninico-Calabro-Sicilian rift zone that cross-cuts the Tyrrhenian arc. Its Sicilian and Apenninic segments enable characterization of a Middle-Late Pleistocene change of the stress regime that could have occurred during a steepening without subduction of the Ionian slab (along Calabria) and its lateral detachment.

Granite and gneiss have been sampled on the submarine fault scarps of the Sardinia Channel and have been dated using the 40Ar/39Ar method. The majority of rocks partially preserve Hercynian ages. Some of them display Lower Cretaceous ages. In addition, Upper Eocene-Oligocene argon resetting is recorded only in rocks from the southeast sector of the Channel. We thus propose that the basement of the Sardinia Channel occupied a shallow position within the stack of the Alpine tectonic units, behind the more deformed front of the internal zones of the Maghrebide Chain.

The schistosity of the Palaeozoic basement of the Capo San Andrea unit (Peloritan Dorsale) is cut by Liassic to Eocene neptunian dykes which developed along a pelagic fault scarp exposed on the sea bottom for 140 My. The Mesozoic structures determined the location of the Alpine deformation.

Granite and gneiss sampled from the submarine fault scarps of the Sardinia Channel were dated using the apatite fission-track method. One sample provides an age of 22.8± 1.3 Ma, which is in the range of the cooling ages of the Calabrian-Peloritan basement, where cooling is due to erosion. Three other samples have ages around 10 Ma, probably due to a tectonic denudation during the Tortonian extension in the Sardinia Channel.

During the Equanaute survey (June 1992), fourteen submersible dives were performed between 4950 and 2250 m water depths across the southern slope of the Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge (CIGMR), in the eastern Equatorial Atlantic. The CIGMR, a high-standing topographic marginal ridge along the Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana transform margin, is believed to result from a complex structural evolution due to the specific wrench-related rifting between Western Equatorial Africa and Northeastern Brazil, in Early Cretaceous times. In this paper we report and discuss geological observations made during dives, and sample analyses to resolve the lithology, paleoenvironmental conditions, age and origin of the CIGMR. The data help in better characterizing the different sedimentary and tectonic regimes which successively prevailed during the CIGMR formation and assessing the thermal regime operative during the fabrication and subsequent evolution of the margin. The thick sedimentary pile exposed along the southern CIGMR slope is made up of a repetitive clastic sequence indicative of a deltaic-to-prodeltaic environment. This sedimentary pile, of Early Cretaceous age, has recorded different stages of the transform margin structural evolution. 1. (1)|Syn- to post-lithification deformations first record extensional deformations related to the rifting of the adjacent northern divergent margin segment (the Deep Ivorian Basin). 2. (2)|Wrench tectonics has, at a later stage, produced intense fracturing and participated in local folding, chiefly detected upslope. The integrated studies of geological samples and in situ observations obtained during the Equanaute survey support models for transform margin evolution proposed mainly from geophysical data.

Fourteen deep dives were conducted along the southern slope of the Cote d’Ivoire–Ghana marginal ridge. Detrital rock samples reveal Early Cretaceous synrift sediments. In situ observations and microtectonic analysis identify the nature and the timing of three successive episodes of deformation. Clay layers are affected by early diagenetic deformational structures such as slump microfolds and normal microfaults. Most of the clastic deposits display a second deformational episode. These structures result from a layer-parallel extension and are related to extensional synrift tectonics. The last stage of deformation is identified by right lateral wrench folds associated with brittle joints and slaty cleavage. It is attributed to the syntransform evolution of the Cote d’Ivoire–Ghana marginal ridge.

Six sandstone blocks sampled during dives along the southern slope of the Ivory Coast–Ghana continental margin have been studied using fission tracks in apatite and zircon. Measurements demonstrate that the rocks were heated above 120°C but below 390°C and cooled quickly. The ages of cooling recorded by the apatite crystals are 90 Ma in the western part of the margin, and 80–70 Ma in the central and eastern part. Heating is interpreted by the heat liberation due to the friction along the active transform fault and by the vicinity of an oceanic spreading center, which slipped along the margin. Cooling is interpreted by two stages of denudation due to minor faults and landslides produced by the increasing of the bathymetric step between the continental margin and the oceanic crust.

International audience; The Mid-Cretaceous tectonic "crisis" is a classical feature of the tectonosedimentary evolution of Tunisia. A reappraisal of the synsedimentary deformations observed in the Tajerouine and Kasserine areas shows that deformations began in the earliest Albian, increased during the Early Albian, and culminated in the Middle Albian. Late Albian deposits overly, locally with a strong angular unconformity, Aptian to Early Albian sediments. In the southern part of the studied area, fault tectonics and tilted blocks dominate, whereas in the northern area, the occurrence of slumps and olistoliths suggests deformations related to incipient salt movements at depth. These new chronological constraints suggest that this tectonic event is most probably related to the final opening of the Atlantic Ocean at equatorial latitudes.

Monte Capanne, Elba is an excellent example of a granite pluton (42 km 2 ) emplaced 6 m.y. ago in a well-known extensional environment, that of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its internal fabric has been studied using the magnitude of magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy measurements at 74 regularly distributed stations. Susceptibility magnitudes reveal a normal and asymmetrical petrographical zoning in the pluton. The magnetic lineations are remarkably well organized, mostly of NW-SE azimuth with slight plunges, and always normal to the walls of the late aplitic dykes. These lineations are also parallel to the stretching lineations of the immediate country rocks of the pluton. In the western and probably deepest part of the pluton a NE-SW trending magnetic/magmatic lineation is also imprinted. The following scenario is proposed for the emplacement of Monte Capanne during the opening of the Tyrrhenian Sea: An approximately E-W trending sinistral transform fault is taken as being responsible for the creation of a pull-apart void that permitted upwelling of the magma. Orientations of the magmatic structures at depth are parallel to the elongation of the feeding zone of this void, i.e. NE-SW. The very top part of the pluton was sheared parallel to the granite-country rock interface, i.e. NW-SE, parallel to the local stretching of the Tyrrhenian Sea at the time of emplacement.

The Ivory Coast-Ghana (ICG) marginal ridge is a prominent feature of the ICG transform margin and includes a fossil ridge partially buried by a thick, undeformed sedimentary cover. The fossil ICG ridge is 130 km long and 25 km wide, and towers over the adjacent rifted basin (deep Ivorian basin, DIB) and the oceanic crust by 1.3 km and more than 4 km, respectively. It formed in three successive stages. 1. (1) During the rifting of the DIB, both vertical and horizontal motions between the DIB and the South American plate varied along the plate boundary. This relative motion occurred in an accommodation zone that tilted the northern slope of the ICG ridge along en-echelon, mainly strike-slip, faults. 2. (2) After the rifting of the DIB, the relative motion remained constant along the transform plate boundary. At this time strike-slip deformation was localized into a narrow and highly deformed belt that truncated the accommodation zone. 3. (3) Finally, the transform motion occurred between the DIB and an occanic plate. Thermal exchanges between the two adjacent plates induced thermal uplift of the ICG ridge that amplified previous tectonic tilting.

International audience; This study provides new Ar-40/Ar-39 geochronological constraints on the age of the Alpine tectonics in the Aspromonte Massif (southern part of the Calabrian-Peloritan belt). This massif exposes the upper units of the Calabride Complex which originated from the European continental margin. The Calabride Complex was incorporated in the Alpine orogenic wedge and then integrated into the Apennines and Maghrebides fold- and-thrust belts. Throughout the Calabride Complex there is evidence for a two stage tectonic history, which remains however rather poorly dated: Alpine nappe stacking is followed by extensional reworking along the former thrust contacts or along new detachment surfaces. Our new ages suggest that exhumation of the uppermost units, which accompanied nappe stacking, probably started at 45 Ma and that the deepest units were almost completely exhumed at 33 Ma. This kinematics probably corresponds to syn-orogenic extension while the end of exhumation is clearly related to the extensional tectonics dated at 28.6 Ma along detachment structures.;Our geochronological data reveal a very short lag time between accretional and extensional processes in this part of the Mediterranean Alpine orogenic belt. The direction of extension, when the units are restored to their initial position (i.e. before the opening of the Western Mediterranean basins and the bending of the arc) is NNE-SSW. Such a direction does not fit with the eastward slab-retreat model generally put forward to explain extension in the Western Mediterranean. In contrast, we provide evidence for roughly N-S middle Oligocene extension in the accretionary prism, not previously described in this part of the Mediterranean domain.

The Calabro-Peloritan belt constitutes the eastward termination of the southern segment of the Alpine Mediterranean belt. This orogenic system was built up during the convergence between the Eurasian and the African plates, roughly directed North-South since the Upper Cretaceous. It was subsequently fragmented during the opening of the Western Mediterranean basins since Oligocene times. The curved shape of the Calabro-Peloritan belt was acquired during the opening of the Tyrrhenian basin since Tortonian. The origin, kinematics and significance of the Calabro-Peloritan tectonic pile are still debated. Our data in the Aspromonte Massif of Southern Calabria reveal an Alpine history marked by two main superimposed kinematic regimes. (i) A first phase corresponds to the piling up of basement nappes with a top-to-the-SE vergence, i.e in a direction orthogonal to the belt trend and towards the Adriatic foreland. This external vergence is similar to what is observed in both Northeastern Sicily and Northern Calabria. In Sicily, the age of nappe piling is Alpine, as evidenced by pinched slices of Mesozoic sediments. In the Aspromonte Massif, thrusting age is less constrained. Our data suggest remnants of late Hercynian structuration before the Alpine stacking. (ii) A second phase corresponds to the thinning of the continental crust, dated at around 30 Ma by both geochronological and stratigraphical data. This extension is mainly localized on two low-angle detachment contacts, with top-to-the-NE displacement. The lower one corresponds to the reworking of the former main nappe contact. The upper one is a large detachment fault cutting across the pile from upper sedimentary levels down to metamorphic basement. Extension of similar Alpine age and similar internal vergence has been already recognized in other parts of the Calabro-Peloritan Arc: in the basement nappes of Northeastern Sicily and in the ophiolitic units of Northern Calabria. Coming back to the original geometry and position of the Calabro-Peloritan belt, before its bending and the opening of the Liguro-Provencal and Tyrrhenian basins, we evidence a homogeneous Oligocene NE-SW extension all along the Calabro-Peloritan segment of the Alpine Mediterranean belt. This tectonometamorphic history is best explained within the framework of the continuous Tertiary westward dipping subduction of the Tethyan oceanic domain below the European active margin and the progressive eastward retreat of the Apennine trench since Oligocene times.

ResumeLa region de Longobucco-Caloveto, dans le Nord du massif de la Sila, en Calabre, montre de tres nombreux filons sedimentaires jurassiques qui traversent des schistes cambro-ordovicien ou des granites hercyniens. Ces filons se repartissent en deux groupes. Les plus anciens, d’âge carixien, sont associes a des failles normales qui ont permis la formation d’un demi-graben rempli par des sediments du Domerien. Les plus recents, d’âge compris entre le Lias superieur et le Malm, marquent la fracturation de hauts-fonds qui se sont effondres au Dogger. Ces filons enregistrent ainsi la formation du segment de la marge de la Tethys auquel correspondent les series de Longobucco-Caloveto. L’etude des relations entre les filons sedimentaires et la fracturation permet de montrer, dans une region pourtant fortement tectonisee au Tertiaire, que differentes failles sont d’âge jurassique : certaines d’entre-elles sont recoupees par des filons et donc anterieures a ceux-ci; d’autres systemes de filons sont paralleles ...

We present new results from the MARADJA'03 cruise depicting the geological structures offshore central and western Algeria. Using swath bathymetry and seismic reflection data, we map and discuss the offshore limits of the Internal Zones corresponding to relics of the AIKaPeCa domain that drifted and collided the African plate during the Miocene. We identify large reverse faults and folds that reactivate part of these limits and are still active today. The morphology of the westernmost NE-SW margin suggests a former strike-slip activity accommodating a westward block translation responsible for the shift of the Internal Zones towards the Moroccan Rif., Nous présentons les résultats récents de la campagne MARADJA'03, qui visent à mettre en évidence les structures géologiques dans le domaine marin au nord-ouest de l'Algérie. Grâce aux données de bathymétrie multifaisceau et de sismique réflexion, nous cartographions et discutons les limites en mer des Zones internes correspondant aux reliques du domaine AlKaPeCa qui a dérivé, puis est entré en collision avec la plaque africaine au Miocène. De grandes failles inverses et plis, actifs dans le champ de contrainte actuel, réactivent certaines de ces limites. La marge ouest-algérienne, orientée NE¿SW, indique la présence d'une ancienne activité en décrochement ayant accommodé la translation des Zones internes vers l'ouest.

[1] We investigate the active seismogenic fault system in the area of the 2003 Mw 6.9 Boumerdes earthquake, Algeria, from a high-resolution swath bathymetry and seismic survey. A series of 5 main fault-propagation folds ∼20–35 km long leave prominent cumulative escarpments on the steep slope and in the deep basin. Fault activity creates Plio-Quaternary growth strata within uplifted areas such as a rollover basin on the slope and piggyback basins in the deep ocean. Most thrusts turn to fault-propagation folds at the sub-surface and depict ramp-flat trajectories. We find that the two main slip patches of the 2003 Mw 6.9 Boumerdes earthquake are spatially correlated to two segmented cumulative scarps recognized on the slope and at the foot of the margin. The overall geometry indicates the predominance of back thrusts implying underthrusting of the Neogene oceanic crust.

The Sardinia Channel is located in a 400 km-long submerged section of the Apennine-Maghrebian branch of the Alpine chain. The Sardinia Channel connects the Algerian-Ligurian-Provençal to the Tyrrhenian oceanic basins. The structure of this region results from the superposition of two tectonic regimes: an earlier crustal thickening and a later crustal thinning. The crustal thickening is the consequence of the shortening which occurred in the late Oligocene–early Miocene during the build up of the Apennine-Maghrebian Orogen. This thickening is coeval with the rotation of the Corsican-Sardinian block and the opening of the Provençal-Algerian back-arc basin. All of these structures, as well as the magmatic arcs in Sardinia and Tunisia, i.e. the Galite Archipelago, are connected to the subduction of the Tethyan Ocean. The crustal thinning is associated with the rifting of the Tyrrhenian Basin, which occurred just before the Messinian salinity crisis and was accompanied by significant erosion throughout the region. This erosion was followed by a period of thermal subsidence linked to the opening of the Tyrrhenian oceanic basin in the Plio-Quaternary, interspersed with minor episodes of compression. On the Sardinian margin, the dives led to the discovery of a submarine volcano, dated at 12.6 Ma, and composed of shoshonitic andesites with lamprophyre inclusions, and to the characterization of the nature and structure of the underlying basement, consisting of tilted blocks of Hercynian metamorphic and granitic rocks and their sedimentary cover. The sea floor morphology reflects this structure. The other areas of the Sardinia Channel explored, i.e. its southern margin and central ridge, belong to the Calabrian-Peloritanian-Kabylian group (CPK). They are composed of a metamorphic and granitic Hercynian basement deformed during the Alpine orogeny, which is stratigraphically overlain by an Oligo-Miocene detrital cover of Peloritanian or Kabylian type, and tectonically overlain by the so-called “flysch nappe”. Throughout the CPK domain these formations were subjected during the Oligo-Miocene, at ca. 23 Ma ago, to a first denudation event, and during the Tortonian, ca. 10-8 Ma ago, to a second denudation, which has been connected to the opening of the Tyrrhenian basin. Structures, microstructures and thermochronological data indicate relatively low P-T conditions for the extensional deformations: this suggests that these units remained at shallow depths in the Apennine-Maghrebian Orogen, and were relatively preserved from the Messinian erosion. The age (12.5 Ma) and nature of the volcanic sequence in the Sorelles is closely comparable with the calc-alkaline suite of the Galite Archipelago, Tunisia. Thus, the data gathered during the dives in the Sardinia Channel give new constraints to the reconstruction of the kinematic evolution not only of the region, but also to the entire western Mediterranean.

[1] A paleomagnetic study of Penninic units in the southern part of the Alpine arc has been carried out. More than 200 samples (23 sites) were collected in Brianconnais Ammonitico rosso limestones of the high Ubaye valley and the Ligurian Alps. A characteristic component of magnetization of reverse polarity was isolated on most of the sites. This component does not pass the fold test and is interpreted as a Tertiary overprint related to Alpine metamorphism. Mean directions in geographic coordinates are D = 121°, I = −52°, α95 = 11°, and D = 72°, I = −48°, α95 = 15° for the Ubaye and the Liguria localities, respectively, indicating large counterclockwise rotations about vertical axis of 68° and 117° relative to stable Europe. These rotations, in agreement with a previous study conducted in the Briancon area, together with other paleomagnetic data from the western Alps, show that the internal Alps suffered a large but nonhomogeneous counterclockwise rotation since the Oligocene. The rotations are in agreement with the combination of earlier separately proposed processes: the rotation of the Adriatic plate accounts for about 25° of rotation, remaining rotation and southward gradient would be related to left-lateral shear accommodating the displacement between Adria and Europe at the southern border of the western Alps. Furthermore, the southward extrusion of the western Alps south of the Simplon fault zone may account for up to 10° of rotation. Rotations appear therefore as a major process accommodating deformation in the western Alps since the Oligocene.
