Abstract

The flat spectrum radio quasar CTA 102 ( z = 1 . 032 ) went through a tremendous phase of variability. Since early 2016 the gamma-ray flux level has been significantly higher than in previous years. It was topped by a four month long giant outburst, where peak fluxes were more than 100 times higher than the quiescence level. Similar trends are observable in optical and X-ray energies. We have explained the giant outburst as the ablation of a gas cloud by the relativistic jet that injects additional matter into the jet and can self-consistently explain the long-term light curve. Here, we argue that the cloud responsible for the giant outburst is part of a larger system that collides with the jet and is responsible for the years-long activity in CTA 102.

Abstract

Blazars are jetted active galactic nuclei with a jet pointing close to the line of sight, hence enhancing their intrinsic luminosity and variability. Monitoring these sources is essential in order to catch them flaring and promptly organize follow-up multi-wavelength observations, which are key to providing rich data sets used to derive e.g., the emission mechanisms at work, and the size and location of the flaring zone. In this context, the Fermi-LAT has proven to be an invaluable instrument, whose data are used to trigger many follow-up observations at high and very high energies. A few examples are illustrated here, as well as a description of different data products and pipelines, with a focus given on FLaapLUC, a tool in use within the H.E.S.S. collaboration.

Abstract

International audience; The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory is the next generation of ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Building on the strengths of current IACTs, CTA is designed to achieve an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, with unprecedented angular and energy resolution. CTA will also increase the energy reach of IACTs, observing photons in the energy range from 20 GeV to beyond 100 TeV. These advances in performance will see CTA heralding in a new era for high-energy astrophysics, with the emphasis shifting from source discovery, to population studies and precision measurements. In this talk we discuss CTA’s ability to conduct source population studies of $\gamma$-ray bright active galactic nuclei and how this ability will enhance our understanding on the redshift evolution of this dominant $\gamma$-ray source class.

Abstract

The realtime follow-up of neutrino events is a promising approach to search for astrophysical neutrino sources. It has so far provided compelling evidence for a neutrino point source: the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 observed in coincidence with the high-energy neutrino IceCube-170922A detected by IceCube. The detection of very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE, $\mathrm{E} > 100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) from this source helped establish the coincidence and constrained the modeling of the blazar emission at the time of the IceCube event. The four major imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays (IACTs) - FACT, H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS - operate an active follow-up program of target-of-opportunity observations of neutrino alerts sent by IceCube. This program has two main components. One are the observations of known gamma-ray sources around which a cluster of candidate neutrino events has been identified by IceCube (Gamma-ray Follow-Up, GFU). Second one is the follow-up of single high-energy neutrino candidate events of potential astrophysical origin such as IceCube-170922A. GFU has been recently upgraded by IceCube in collaboration with the IACT groups. Abstract

Extreme high synchrotron peaked blazars (EHBLs) are amongst the most powerful accelerators found in nature. Usually the synchrotron peak frequency of an EHBL is above $10^{17}\,$Hz, i.e., lies in the range of medium to hard X-rays making them ideal sources to study particle acceleration and radiative processes. EHBL objects are commonly observed at energies beyond several TeV, making them also powerful probes of gamma-ray absorption in the intergalactic medium. During the last decade, several attempts have been made to increase the number of EHBL detected at TeV energies and probe their spectral characteristics. Here we report new detections of EHBLs in the TeV energy regime, each at a redshift of less than 0.2, by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.). Also, we report on X-ray observations of these EHBLs candidates with Swift XRT. Abstract

The upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) ground-based gamma-ray observatory will open up our view of the very high energy Universe, offering an improvement in sensitivity of 5-10 times that of previous experiments. NectarCAM is one of the proposed cameras for the Medium-Sized Telescopes (MST) which have been designed to cover the core energy range of CTA, from 100 GeV to 10 TeV. The final camera will be capable of GHz sampling and provide a field of view of 8 degrees with its 265 modules of 7 photomultiplier each (for a total of 1855 pixels). In order to validate the performance of NectarCAM, a partially-equipped prototype has been constructed consisting of only the inner 61-modules. It has so far undergone testing at the integration test-bench facility in CEA Paris-Saclay (France) and on a prototype of the MST structure in Adlershof (Germany). To characterize the performance of the prototype, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted using a detailed model of the 61 module camera in the CORSIKA/sim_telarray framework. Abstract

Long-lasting, very bright multiwavelength flares of blazar jets are a curious phenomenon. The interaction of a large gas cloud with the jet of a blazar may serve as a reservoir of particles entrained by the jet. The size and density structure of the cloud then determine the duration and strength of the particle injection into the jet and the subsequent radiative outburst of the blazar. In this presentation, a comprehensive parameter study is provided showing the rich possibilities that this model offers. Additionally, we use this model to explain the 4-months long, symmetrical flare of the flat spectrum radio quasar CTA 102 in late 2016. Abstract

Previously, the H.E.S.S. Collaboration has reported about very extended $\gamma$-ray emission around Westerlund 1, a massive young stellar cluster in the Milky Way. In this contribution we present an updated analysis that employs a new analysis technique and is based on a much larger data set, allowing us to constrain better the morphology and the energy spectrum of the emission. The analysis technique used is a three-dimensional likelihood analysis, which is especially well suited for largely extended sources. Abstract

International audience; The large majority of high energy sources detected with Fermi-LAT are blazars, which are known to be very variable sources. High cadence long-term monitoring simultaneously at different wavelengths being prohibitive, the study of their transient activities can help shedding light on our understanding of these objects. The early detection of such potentially fast transient events is the key for triggering follow-up observations at other wavelengths. A Python tool, FLaapLUC, built on top of the Science Tools provided by the Fermi Science Support Center and the Fermi-LAT collaboration, has been developed using a simple aperture photometry approach. This tool can effectively detect relative flux variations in a set of predefined sources and alert potential users. Such alerts can then be used to trigger target of opportunity observations with other facilities. It is shown that FLaapLUC is an efficient tool to reveal transient events in Fermi-LAT data, providing quick results which can be used to promptly organise follow-up observations. Results from this simple aperture photometry method are also compared to full likelihood analyses. The FLaapLUC package is made available on GitHub and is open to contributions by the community.

Abstract

The FSRQ CTA 102 (z=1.032) has been tremendously active over the last few years. During its peak activity lasting several months in late 2016 and early 2017, the gamma-ray and optical fluxes rose by up to a factor 100 above the quiescence level. We have interpreted the peak activity as the ablation of a gas cloud by the relativistic jet, which can nicely account for the months-long lightcurve in 2016 and 2017. The peak activity was in the middle of a 2-year-long high-state, which was characterized by increased fluxes and increased rms variability compared to the previous low-states, and which was flanked by two bright flares. Abstract

The Automatic Telescope for Optical Monitoring is a 75cm optical telescope located at the H.E.S.S. site in Namibia. Since 2005, it monitors around 250 gamma-ray emitting AGN and has observed numerous blazar flares in several colour bands with multiple measurements during any given night. We present recent flaring events of two FSRQ – 3C 279 and CTA 102 – together with corresponding multi-wavelength data including Fermi-LAT, and examine possible correlations between energy bands.

Abstract

With the installation of a new 28-m diameter imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope in the middle of the array, the H.E.S.S. instrument has entered since 2012 into its Phase II. The fifth large-size telescope is particularly important to lower the threshold energy of the array, and is thus a unique instrument to observe low-frequency-peaked blazars, such as flat-spectrum radio-quasars (FSRQs), which remain rare in the very-high- energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray domain. In this contribution, we report on the discovery with the H.E.S.S. telescopes of VHE $\gamma$-ray emission from the FSRQ PKS 0736+017 (z=0.189). H.E.S.S. observations were triggered as a target-of-opportunity in February 2015 following the detection of $\gamma$-ray flaring activity in the MeV-GeV energy-band with Fermi-LAT. Significant VHE emission is detected with H.E.S.S. only during one of the nights of the observing campaign, showing at least night-by-night variability in the VHE regime. Abstract

The H.E.S.S. Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope system is, due to its fast reaction time and its comparably low energy threshold, very well suited to perform follow-up observations of detections at other wavelengths or other messengers like high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves. These advantages are utilized optimally via a fully automatized system reacting to alerts from various partner observatories covering various wavelengths and astrophysical messengers. In this contribution we'll provide an overview and present recent results from H.E.S.S. programs to follow up on multi-wavelength and multi-messenger alerts. Abstract

In 2015/16, the photomultiplier cameras of the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescopes CT1-4 have undergone a major upgrade. The entire electronics has been replaced, using NECTAr chips for the front-end readout. A new ventilation system has been installed and several auxiliary components have been replaced. Besides this, the internal control and readout software was rewritten from scratch in a modern and modular way. Ethernet technology was used wherever possible to ensure both flexibility, stability and high bandwidth. An overview of the installed components will be given. Abstract

The very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) sky is dominated by blazars, radio-loud active galactic nuclei whose relativistic jet is closely aligned with the line of sight. Blazars are characterized by rapid variability at all wavelengths and thus an important part of the H.E.S.S. blazar program is devoted to target of opportunity (ToO) observations. H.E.S.S. triggers blazar ToOs on the basis of publicly available blazar observations at longer wavelengths (optical, X-rays, and $\gamma$-rays), from private optical observations with the ATOM telescope, and from private communications by $\gamma$-ray partners in the context of MoUs. In 2015, about 70 hours of H.E.S.S. data were taken in the form of blazar ToOs, which represents ~15$\%$ of all extragalactic observations. In this contribution, we present the H.E.S.S. blazar ToO status, and we focus on two major results from the 2015 season: the detection of VHE emission from 3C 279 during the June 2015 flare, and the discovery of PKS 0736+017 as a new VHE quasar., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will probe the non-thermal universe above 20 GeV up to several hundreds of TeV with a significant improvement in sensitivity and angular resolution compared to current experiments. Its outstanding capabilities will allow to increase the number of extragalactic cosmic accelerators detected at very high energy (VHE) and therefore to better constrain the population of VHE accelerators and the gamma-ray absorption processes in the intergalactic medium. For the first time in the history of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), CTA will be an open observatory and high-level data will be made available to the astronomical community. Gammapy is an open-source Python package developed by the Cherenkov telescope community that provides tools to simulate the gamma-ray sky and analyse IACT data. The versatile architecture of, and steady user contributions to Gammapy enable a large variety of high-level data analyses. International audience; The 14 years old cameras of the H.E.S.S. 12-m telescopes have been upgraded in 2015/2016, with the goals of reducing the system failure rate, reducing the dead time and improving the overall performance of the array. This conference contribution describes the various tests that were carried out on the cameras and their sub-components both in the lab and on site. It also gives an overview of the commissioning and calibration procedures adopted during and after the installation, including e.g. flat-fielding and trigger threshold scans. Finally, it reports in detail about the overall performance of the four new H.E.S.S-I cameras, using very recent data.

Abstract

The flat spectrum radio quasar CTA 102 ($z = 1.032$) went through a tremendous phase of variability. Since early 2016 the gamma-ray flux level has been significantly higher than in previous years. It was topped by a four month long giant outburst, where peak fluxes were more than 100 times higher than the quiescence level. Similar trends are observable in optical and X-ray energies. We have explained the giant outburst as the ablation of a gas cloud by the relativistic jet that injects additional matter into the jet and can self-consistently explain the long-term light curve. Here, we argue that the cloud responsible for the giant outburst is part of a larger system that collides with the jet and is responsible for the years-long activity in CTA 102., 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Galaxies as part of the special issue "Monitoring the non-thermal Universe", a conference held in Cochem, Germany, 17th - 21st September 2018

Abstract

The blazar PKS 1510-089 was the first of the flat spectrum radio quasar type, which had been detected simultaneously by a ground based Cherenkov telescope (H.E.S.S.) and the LAT instrument on board the Fermi satellite. Given the strong broad line region emission defining this blazar class, and the resulting high optical depth for VHE ($E>100\,$GeV) $\gamma$-rays, it was surprising to detect VHE emission from such an object. In May 2015, PKS 1510-089 exhibited high states throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. Target of Opportunity observations with the H.E.S.S. experiment revealed strong and unprecedented variability of this source. Abstract

Time variability of the photon flux is a known feature of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and in particular of blazars. The high frequency peaked BL Lac (HBL) object PKS 2155-304 is one of the brightest sources in the TeV band and has been monitored regularly with different instruments and in particular with the H.E.S.S. experiment above 200 GeV for more than 11 years. These data together with the observations of other instruments and monitoring programs like SMARTS (optical), Swift-XRT/RXTE/XMM-Newton (X-ray) and Fermi-LAT (100 MeV < E < 300 GeV) are used to characterize the variability of this object in the quiescent state over a wide energy range. Variability studies are made by looking at the lognormality of the light curves and at the fractional root mean square (rms) variability Fvar in several energy bands. Abstract

Blazars are active galactic nuclei, and the most numerous High Energy (HE) and Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitters. Their optical emission is often dominated by non-thermal, and, in the case of BL Lacs, featureless continuum radiation. This renders the determination of their redshift extremely difficult. Indeed, as of today only about 50 % of gamma-ray blazars have a measured spectroscopic redshift. The knowledge of redshift is fundamental because it allows the precise modeling of the VHE emission and also of its interaction with the extragalactic background light (EBL). The beginning of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) operations in the near future will allow the detection of several hundreds of new BL Lacs. Using the first Fermi catalogue of sources above 10 GeV (1FHL), we performed simulations which demonstrate that at least half of the 1FHL BL Lacs detectable by CTA will not have a measured redshift. Indeed the organization of observing campaigns to measure the redshift of these blazars has been recognized as a necessary support for the AGN Key Science Project of CTA. Taking advantage of the recent success of an X-shooter GTO observing campaign, we thus devised an observing campaign to measure the redshifts of as many as possible of these candidates. The main characteristic of this campaign with respect to previous ones will be the use of higher resolution spectrographs and of 8 meter class telescopes. We are starting submitting proposals for these observations. Abstract

PKS 0301-243 is a distant (z=0.266) high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object, detected both at high and very high energies (VHE) with Fermi/LAT and H.E.S.S., and which experienced a flare in May 2010 in the GeV band. H.E.S.S. observations of PKS 0301-243 carried out between September 2009 and December 2011 result in a strong detection of VHE γ-rays from the source with a significance of 9.8 standard deviations. Multi-wavelength observations from optical to GeV gamma-rays are also presented. The VHE spectrum is used to derive an upper limit on the opacity of the universe to gamma-rays.

Abstract

The field of gamma-ray astronomy has expanded rapidly during the last decade. In the energy regime from 100 GeV up to several TeV, Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) are the most sensitive detectors. Presently all IACTs use photomultiplier tubes for light detection, but for future projects Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) are very promising alternatives. In order to demonstrate their potential, the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) collaboration has constructed an IACT camera comprising 1440 G-APDs. By means of specially designed light concentrators the collection area of each sensor is enlarged. The entire electronics for analog signal processing, digitization and triggering is fully integrated into the camera body. Event data are sent via Ethernet to the counting house. The FACT camera was installed during fall 2011 at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on La Palma, Canary Islands (Spain), on a refurbished telescope mount.

Abstract

With the discovery of high energy {\gamma}-ray emission from the Andromeda galaxy (M 31) by the Fermi/LAT collaboration, normal galaxies begin to arise from the shadows for the first time, providing insight on cosmic ray acceleration in external galaxies. We search for high energy {\gamma}-ray emission from galaxies in the Local Group which were not investigated so far: M 81, M 83, IC 342, Maffei 1, Maffei 2 and M 94. Fermi/LAT public data from August 4, 2008 to January 1, 2011 were analysed for these galaxies. We compare the results to other starburst and normal galaxies detected at high energies so far: the Magellanic clouds, M 31, and the starburst galaxies M 82 and NGC 253. No significant detection is found in the data for the sources in our sample, and we derive upper limits on their photon flux. Comparing the results to other Local Group objects, we find that the derived upper limits are fully compatible with expectations from cosmic rays interacting with the interstellar medium within the host galaxies. In the case of M 33 and M 83, a detection in Fermi/LAT data should be imminent. The expected fluxes for the other sources in the sample are below the sensitivity of Fermi/LAT, even after 10 years of observation. Abstract

Very-high energy (VHE) emission has been detected from PKS 0447-439 with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope array. This blazar is one of the brightest hard-spectrum extragalactic objects in the Fermi bright source list. Its detection with H.E.S.S. triggered Target of Opportunity observations with the Swift and RXTE telescopes, which show rapid flaring in the X-ray band. The spectrum and light curve measured by H.E.S.S. are presented. Along with the Fermi LAT data it is possible to put an upper limit on the redshift of the source. Implications of the flux evolution are discussed briefly.

Abstract

The H.E.S.S. experiment has reported the detection of very high energy (VHE: E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the well-known radio-galaxy Cen A. Following this discovery, we refine the previous multi-blob synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model applied to the multi-wavelength emission from this source using the new H.E.S.S. data. The prediction of the VHE gamma-ray level of emission for Cen A presented in Lenain et al. paper agrees very well in the view of this recent data. Further VHE observations of Cen A might detect variability, which would comfort our inner jet modeling. Abstract

The BL Lac object RGB J0152+017 (z = 0.080) was predicted to be a very high-energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) gamma-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio fluxes. We report recent observations of this source made in late October and November 2007 with the H.E.S.S. array consisting of four imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous observations were made in X-rays with the Swift and RXTE satellites, in the optical band with the ATOM telescope, and in the radio band with the Nancay Radio Telescope. As a result, RGB J0152+017 is discovered as a source of VHE gamma-rays by H.E.S.S. A signal of 173 gamma-ray photons corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.6 sigmas was found in the data. The energy spectrum of the source can be described by a powerlaw with a spectral index of = 2.95 +- 0.36stat +- 0.20syst. The integral flux above 300 GeV corresponds to ~2% of the flux of the Crab nebula. The source spectral energy distribution (SED) can be described using a two-component (extended jet and blob in jet) non-thermal synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model, plus a thermal host galaxy component. The parameters that are found are very close to those found for TeV blazars in similar SSC studies. The location of its synchrotron peak, as derived from the SED in Swift data, allows clear classification as a high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL).

It.); International audience; In the recent years, the new generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cerenkov Telescopes successfully detected very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from a growing number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), mainly belonging to the blazar class. Among these recent results, we will mainly focus in this work on two recent discoveries made with the H.E.S.S. experiment: the tremendously active state of the blazar PKS 2155-304 observed in July 2006 and the discovery of VHE gamma-rays from the radio galaxy Cen A. On the one hand, the observation of very fast variability in PKS 2155-304 challenges the current radiative standard models for TeV blazars. On the other hand, the discovery of Cen A as a source of VHE gamma-rays firmly establishes, together with the previous detection of M 87, radio galaxies as a new class of VHE emitters.

More than fifty extragalactic very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) sources have been found using ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, about twenty of which have been discovered using the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) experiment based in Namibia. Even though BL Lac objects are the dominant class of VHE detected extragalactic objects, other types of sources (starburst galaxies, radio galaxies or flat spectrum radio quasars) begin to emerge. Abstract

Within the FACT project, we construct a new type of camera based on Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (G-APDs). Compared to photomultipliers, G-APDs are more robust, need a lower operation voltage and have the potential of higher photon-detection efficiency and lower cost, but were never fully tested in the harsh environments of Cherenkov telescopes. The FACT camera consists of 1440 G-APD pixels and readout channels, based on the DRS4 (Domino Ring Sampler) analog pipeline chip and commercial Ethernet components. Preamplifiers, trigger system, digitization, slow control and power converters are integrated into the camera.

Abstract

M 87 is the first extragalactic source detected in the Very High Energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray domain that is not a blazar, its large scale jet not being aligned to the line of sight. Slight modification of standard emission models of TeV blazars allows to account for the gamma-ray spectra obtained with H.E.S.S. We present a multi-blob synchrotron self-Compton model taking explicitly into account large viewing angles and moderate values of the Lorentz factor as inferred from MHD simulations of jet formation. Abstract

Very-high energy (VHE) emission has been detected from PKS 0447-439 with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescope array. This blazar is one of the brightest hard-spectrum extragalactic objects in the Fermi bright source list. Its detection with H.E.S.S. triggered Target of Opportunity observations with the Swift and RXTE telescopes, which show rapid flaring in the X-ray band. The spectrum and light curve measured by H.E.S.S. are presented. Along with the Fermi LAT data it is possible to put an upper limit on the redshift of the source. Abstract

Blazars are the most abundant class of known extragalactic very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray sources. However, one of the biggest difficulties in investigating their VHE emission resides in their limited number, since less than 60 of them are known by now. In this contribution we report on H.E.S.S. observations of the BL Lac object PKS 1440-389. This source has been selected as target for H.E.S.S. based on its high-energy gamma-ray properties measured by Fermi-LAT. The extrapolation of this bright, hard-spectrum gamma-ray blazar into the VHE regime made a detection on a relatively short time scale very likely, despite its uncertain redshift. H.E.S.S. observations were carried out with the 4-telescope array from February to May 2012 and resulted in a clear detection of the source. Contemporaneous multi-wavelength data are used to construct the spectral energy distribution of PKS 1440-389 which can be described by a simple one-zone synchrotron-self Compton model., In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2015), The Hague, The Netherlands

Abstract

The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. Abstract

Along with the improvement of our knowledge of the Universe, increasingly detailed, varied and precise data sets appeared necessary to solve the remaining unknowns. Experiments thus improved their sensitivities and resolutions but also combined their observations into large multi-messenger and multi-wavelength data sets. If a source is variable the available temporal information can also be used to constrain the possible processes taking place in this source. Blazars are active galactic nuclei displaying important variability with electromagnetic emissions covering a large fraction of the observed electromagnetic spectrum, emitted in a relativistic jet of particles. The H.E.S.S. experiment is an array of Cherenkov telescopes located in Namibia performing astronomical observations using very high energy photons. In this manuscript, reviews of blazar physics, very high energy astronomy and the H.E.S.S. experiment are followed by various worked performed to analyse and use variable data from blazars. Tools were developed in the H.E.S.S. analysis software aiming at improving the analysis of flaring events. Sets of data obtained during flaring events of two blazars (3C 279 and PKS 2022-077) were analysed and put into context with contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations. A new task aiming at characterising blazar flare in a semi-systematic way is also introduced. The manuscript then ends with the results of the exploration of the parameter space of a lepto-hadronic emission model applied to a flare of TXS 0506+056 coincident with the detection of an astrophysical neutrino with IceCube., Suite à chaque amélioration de notre connaissance de l'Univers, la résolution des zones d'ombre restantes dans nos théories nécessite l'utilisation de données de plus en plus détaillées, précises et variées. Les expériences ont donc amélioré leur sensibilité et résolution, mais aussi combiné leurs données pour former des compilations de données multi-longueurs d'onde et multi-messagers. Si une source est variable, les informations temporelles peuvent aussi ajouter des contraintes aux processus ayant lieu dans celle-ci.Les blazars sont des noyaux actifs de galaxies dont les émissions électromagnétiques, qui couvrent une large fraction du spectre électromagnétique observé, sont fortement variables et émises par un jet relativiste. L’expérience H.E.S.S. est un réseau de télescopes Cherenkov situé en Namibie réalisant des observation astronomiques de photons de très haute énergies. Ce manuscrit commence par une revue de la physique des blazars, de l'astronomie à très haute énergies et de l'expérience H.E.S.S., qui est suivie par les descriptions de divers travaux réalisés pour analyser et utiliser des données de variabilité de blazars. Des jeux de données obtenus durant des périodes d'activités intenses de deux blazars (3C 279 et PKS 2022-077) ont été analysés et mis en relation avec les données multi-longueurs d'onde contemporaines. Une nouvelle tâche de travail visant à caractériser de manière semi-systématique les épisodes d'activité de blazars est aussi introduite. Enfin, le manuscrit se termine par les résultats d'une exploration de l'espace des paramètres d'un modèle d'émission lepto-hadronique appliqué à une observation de TXS 0506+056 avec une détection coïncidente d'une activité électromagnétique et d'un neutrino.

Abstract

The telescope array H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) allows to detect cosmic ray particles with the Cherenkov light that is emitted by the secondary particles resulting of the interaction of the primary particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. Besides the detection and the study of astrophysical sources that emit rays, H.E.S.S. allows to study the different diffuse emissions that compose the cosmic rays. The interest of these diffuse emissions for the comprehension of the origin and the propagation of cosmic rays as well as the chance that they conduct to the detection of a dark matter signal is recalled in this manuscript. Following a presentation of the H.E.S.S. experiment, the possible improvment of the discrimination between rays and electrons with H.E.S.S. is discussed. Especially, the possibility of detecting direct Cherenkov light emitted by primary cosmic ray electrons but not by primary rays is addressed. Then, a discriminating method based on a log-likelihood comparison between recorded images and template images from a semi-analytical model is used to obtain a spectral reconstruction of the cosmic ray electrons and positrons with H.E.S.S. data. This measurement allows for the first time to establish the shape of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray electrons and positrons up to20 TeV.; Le réseau de télescopes H.E.S.S. Outre la détection et l'étude de sources astrophysiques qui émettent des rayons gamma, H.E.S.S. permet d'étudier les différentes émissions diffuses du rayonnement cosmique. L'intérêt de ces émissions diffuses dans la compréhension de l'origine et la propagation des rayons cosmiques ainsi que la possibilité d'y détecter un signal de matière noire est rappelé dans ce manuscrit. Après une présentation de l'expérience H.E.S.S., la possible amélioration de la discrimination entre les rayons gamma et les électrons avec H.E.S.S. est discutée. En particulier, la possibilité de détecter le rayonnement Cherenkov direct émis par les électrons primaires du rayonnement cosmique au contraire des rayons gamma est abordée. Ensuite, une méthode de discrimination basée sur une comparaison à l'aide d'un maximum de vraisemblance entre des images enregistrées par les caméras des télescopes et des images issues d'un modèle semi-analytique est utilisée afin d'obtenir une reconstruction spectrale des électrons et des positrons du rayonnement cosmique avec les données de H.E.S.S. Cette mesure permet pour la première fois d'étendre la détermination du spectre en énergie des électrons et des positrons du rayonnement cosmique jusqu'à 20 TeV.
