Abstract

The aim of this publication is to conclude on the interest of vibratory energy harvesting on classic quadcopter drone for autonomous applications (battery charging in real time, autonomous sensors), monitoring or even vibration control applications. A complete dynamic analysis allows to quantify the amount of electrical power that is possible to produce during the hovering flight of a quadcopter drone. These results have been obtained by substitution of the inert parts of the drone by piezoelectric components. For that purpose, different types of piezoelectric structures have been tested, including some commercial transducers (DuraAct from Piezoelectric Instrument and Murata buzzers) and some home-made such as a piezoelectric paint. Our original piezoelectric smart arms have been able to scavenge up to 5.35 mW during a stationary flight which remains quite enough to supply low-consumption sensors for monitoring applications.

Abstract

Self-sensing structures are tremendously needed in transport or energy applications. Nevertheless, structures are rarely designed in advance to harvest energy in realistic operational conditions, leading to sensing functions using most of the time batteries. Thus, this paper proposes a complete application of self-powered sensing using an integrated piezoelectric transducer on a representative composite structure, namely a smart composite reduced-model car. Based on an optimized self-powered Synchronized Switch Harvesting on Inductor circuit (SSHI) coupled with a complete electromechanical behavior study, up to 40 μ W can be harvested on a resistive load of 3 M Ω for a linear velocity of 12.5 km.h −1. This power allows supplying a temperature sensor and its wireless transmitter, whose data can be sent each 60s. Our functionalized car is a first step toward real industrial application cases and demonstrates the ability of the proposed method to enhance the energy harvesting process on an existing weakly coupled structure and use the vibrations as an energy source for relevant embedded microgenerators and associated self-powered sensors. 10. Experimental investigations of a new concept of wave energy converter hybridizing piezoelectric and dielectric elastomer generators.

Abstract

A novel concept of a surge wave energy converter for nearshore applications is investigated experimentally. The centimetre-sized prototype developed in this work represents a proof of concept of a submerged system, which entails a hybrid transduction solution for the electrical conversion of wave energy, that uses piezoelectric elements (PZEs) and dielectric elastomer generators (DEG). The idea is to exploit the horizontal pressure gradient and horizontal water velocity underneath the waves to compress the PZE and inflate each half wave period a soft variable capacitance, which composes the DEG. The electrical charges created by the PZE are used to polarize the DEG, which is able to multiply the input energy. This hybridization is conceived to allow the system to generate electrical energy from waves without conventional high voltage supplies, thus reducing production costs and allowing standalone clean electrical generation. The article provides the preliminary fluid-mechanical measurements performed in a wave flume with a first version of the prototype and supported by a model comprising the fluid/structure interaction, the materials response, and the electrical operations. An estimation of the output energy of a small-sized prototype in constant charge mode is computed, and perspectives for optimizing the system are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports on the design of a cm-scale double spring membrane used in a two degree-of-fre edom electromagnetic vibration energy harvester for railway monitoring applications. This type of membrane design enables to achieve very low stiffness for the springs (typically between 1N.mm-1 up to 10N.mm-1 ) in one piece, which reduces manufacturing los ses and greatly simplify the system assembly. In addition, they are very thin, resulting in extremely compact devices, which is very important in energy harvesting. The mechanical modelling of different types of membranes was performed using a finite element approach in order to highlight the best geometry. A series of membranes have been manufactured by machining into a non-magnetic steel and tested with the entire energy harvester.

International audience; Dans ce travail, nous présentons un prototype de générateur électrostatique souple pouvant être incorporé au niveau du genou pour produire de l'énergie lors de la marche ou de la course à pied. Ce générateur, complètement autonome, s'appuie sur l'incorporation d'un électret qui joue le rôle de réservoir de charges et d'un polymère électroactif de type silicone. L'originalité vient du matériau électret constitué d'un polymère de la famille des parylènes fluorés et de la géométrie du dispositif permettant à la fois d'optimiser les performances mécaniques et électriques de la structure.

Abstract

International audience; Among the different technologies for kinetic energy harvesting, dielectric elastomers generators (DEGs) may represent a promising solution for supplying power to wearable low power consumption sensors and devices. These electrostatic generators provide a low-cost and lightweight solution to harvest high electrical energy densities from the mechanical deformation of an elastomeric membrane. The main disadvantage of these structures is the need of an external high voltage supply to perform the energetic cycle. In order to overcome this limitation and have a completely autonomous energy scavenger, our research group has been working since 2012, on coupling dielectric elastomers with electret materials (i.e. insulator materials that can hold a permanent electric charge over a long period of time). In the present work, a new hybrid solution for wearable energy harvesters based on DEG will be presented. This new autonomous device is based on the combination of a DEG with a piezoelectric material, which is used as new polarization source for the DEG energetic cycle. The working principle and the first results obtained on this new prototype are presented and a comparison between the two polarization solutions (electret and piezoelectric materials) is discussed.

Abstract

Parylene C is used in many applications due to its high properties but it remains a material with moderate performance as long as it is intended for use as an electret. Hence, the generally accepted idea, rightly so, in the scientific and industrial community not to necessarily select parylene (i.e., parylene C) for applications where the endurance of the electret is a strong criterion. Our study provided a new perspective on the performance of parylenes as electret. In this case, we will talk about fluorinated Parylenes of the VT‐4 type and especially AF‐4 variant. Their thermal stability is outstanding and a charge stability is almost total up to 100 °C. A 50% reduction in the charge is recorded at a temperature as high as of 220 °C (9 μm thick Parylene AF‐4), making it one of the most efficient polymer electrets to date. Negatively and positively charged Parylene AF‐4 electrets presented similar performance over long durations, which is out of ordinary for the commonly employed polymeric electrets. Finally, these fluorinated polymers are therefore particularly promising new candidates for applications in electret‐based converters for energy harvesting. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Abstract

International audience; Les élastomères diélectriques sont de plus en plus utilisés pour créer des transducteurs dans de nombreux domaines industriels : interface haptique, robotique, biomimétisme, énergie. Dans le domaine de l'énergie, le développement de générateurs électrostatiques souples tient une large place. Toutefois, le courant de fuite diminue l'efficacité et la durée de vie des dispositifs utilisant ces matériaux. Cette étude concerne donc l'influence des facteurs externes (étirement, température) sur les propriétés électriques du polyacrylate VHB4910, un des matériaux largement utilisés pour créer des générateurs. Nous relevons que le courant de fuite augmente avec l'augmentation de l'étirement. Ce comportement peut se combiner avec l'effet de la température.

Abstract

International audience; Dielectric elastomers such as 3M VHB4910 acrylate film have been widely used for electromechanical energyconversion such as actuators, sensors and generators, due to their lightweight, high efficiency, low cost and high energydensity. Mechanical and electric properties of such materials have been deeply investigated according to variousparameters (temperature, frequency, pre-stress, nature of the compliant electrodes…). Models integrating analytic lawsdeduced from experiments increase their accuracy. Nevertheless, leakage current and electrical breakdown reduce theefficiency and the lifetime of devices made with these polymers. These two major phenomena are not deeplyinvestigated in the literature. Thus, this paper describes the current-voltage characteristics of acrylate 3M VHB4910 andinvestigates the stability of the current under high electric field (kV) for various temperatures (from 20°C to 80°C) andover short (300 s) and long (12h) periods. Experimental results show that, with gold electrodes at ambient temperature,the current decreases with time to a stable value corresponding to the conduction current. This decrease occurs during 6hours, whereas in the literature values of current at short time (less than 1 hour) are generally reported. This decreasecan be explained by relaxations mechanisms in the polymer. Schottky emission and Poole-Frenkel emission are bothevaluated to explain the leakage current. It emerges from this study that the Schottky effect constitutes the mainmechanism of electric current in the 3M VHB4910. For high temperatures, the steady state is reached quickly. To end first results on the leakage current changes for pre-stretch VHB4910 complete this study.

Abstract

Dielectric elastomer transducers consist of thin electrically insulating elastomeric membranes coated on both sides with compliant electrodes. They are a promising electromechanically active polymer technology that may be used for actuators, strain sensors, and electrical generators that harvest mechanical energy. The rapid development of this field calls for the first standards, collecting guidelines on how to assess and compare the performance of materials and devices. This paper addresses this need, presenting standardized methods for material characterisation, device testing and performance measurement. These proposed standards are intended to have a general scope and a broad applicability to different material types and device configurations. Nevertheless, they also intentionally exclude some aspects where knowledge and/or consensus in the literature were deemed to be insufficient. This is a sign of a young and vital field, whose research development is expected to benefit from this effort towards standardisation.

Abstract

Electroactive polymers are studied and compared to create an innovating mechanical scavenging application. Electroactives polymers include electronic (piezoelectric, dielectric...) and ionic (IPMC, gels...) polymers. Thanks to a complete state of art, six polymers have been chosen, characterised and analytically modelled. This comparative study reveals dielectric polymers which have a very important energy density (1.5J.g-1). Then, a detailed electromechanical analytic modelling for dielectric polymer has been realized. This modelling is based on an electric and mechanical characterization of the polymer, and takes care of the parameters variation. Adaptable to any structure and solicitation, this modelling is validated by first simple measurements.Finally, an innovating application is developed: scavenging mechanical energy during human motion in the level of knee. A prototype has been designed thanks to the analytical modelling, and tested in situ. Ways to create power management is opened., Le but de ce travail de thèse est d'explorer la potentialité des polymères électroactifs pour une application de récupération d'énergie mécanique ambiante.Les polymères électroactifs incluent la famille électronique (piézoélectrique, diélectrique...) et la famille ionique (IPMC, ionic gels...). Grâce à un état de l'art complet, six types de polymères ont été sélectionnés, modélisés analytiquement (couplage électromécanique) et caractérisés. De cette première partie comparative ressortent les polymères diélectriques à la forte densité d'énergie récupérable (1.5J.g-1). La seconde partie de ce travail de thèse concerne la mise en place d'un modèle analytique électro-mécano-thermique le plus fiable possible et adaptable à tous types de structures et de sollicitations. Pour ce faire, une large campagne de mesures électriques et mécaniques a été opérée afin de déterminer finement le comportement physique du matériau, les variations des paramètres intrinsèques et les pertes associées. Ce modèle analytique est validé par une série de tests sur des cas simples de structures.La dernière partie de ce travail de thèse concerne le développement d'une application novatrice : la récupération d'énergie mécanique au niveau du genou lors de la marche humaine. Le convertisseur a été dimensionné grâce au modèle développé, puis testé in situ. Finalement, des pistes pour la gestion électrique autonome de l'application sont proposées.
