Clear-cutting has been the dominant harvesting method used in boreal forest silviculture. Reducing the potential negative effects of intensive forestry activities on ecosystems, e.g., the simplification and homogenization of stand structure, requires diversifying silvicultural practices to promote forest resilience in the face of climate change. Priority therefore lies in developing, evaluating, and adapting partial cutting as a potential silvicultural option for ensuring the sustainable management of boreal forests. In this chapter, we summarize the findings of two large-scale experiments conducted in Canadian boreal forests that tested new silvicultural approaches and explore their implications for forest management. We discuss the effects of these treatments on tree growth, tree mortality, regeneration, and biodiversity, and we examine the challenges of existing silvicultural approaches in the context of climate change.

Natural disturbances such as pest outbreaks have a significant impact on forest dynamics and services, including the loss of mature stands. From a wood production perspective, these disturbances can lead to long-lasting imbalances in the overall age-class structure of the forest, potentially resulting in a shortage of mature harvestable stands. Researchers from Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Canadian Forest Service (CFS) have made a timber supply analysis of the Dunière forest located in the centre of the Gaspé Peninsula (Québec). This region suffers from an age-class structure imbalance caused by an eastern spruce budworm (ESB) outbreak that ended in 1984, and is consequently facing a reduced annual allowable cut, leading to long- term implications for the regional forest sector. The authors suggest that partial harvesting – the removal of a proportion of timber in a mature stand several years before a final cut is carried out – is a promising opportunity in the ESB-affected area for mitigating mid-term timber supply shortages by smoothing the fibre supply over time.

We report on a 60-year-old red pine (Pinus resinosa Aiton) spacing trial experiment located in Ontario, Canada, that included the combinations between six initial spacings (from 1.2 to 3.0 m) and the presence or absence of a commercial thinning (CT) regime, as well as their impacts on quadratic mean diameter (QMD) and stand volume yield. The CT regime, initiated at age 30, targeted a residual basal area (BA) of 38 m2·ha−1after each of four entries. Without thinning, as initial spacing increased, QMD increased; gross and net volume production peaked in the 2.1–2.4 m spacings. With thinning, similar trends with spacing were evident for QMD, although piece sizes were larger and differences between spacings were lower. The immediate increase of mean tree size caused by tree selection explained most of the differences in QMD between thinned and unthinned plots. As part of the Carrefour Forêts 2019 Conference, the forest research branch of Quebec’s Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs and the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre of Natural Resources Canada organized jointly the symposium “Adaptive silviculture to climate change: from concepts to reality”. The symposium brought together a hundred actors from the forest sector including engineers, biologists, technicians, private woodlot owners, professors, researchers and students. Speakers from different regions of Quebec and Vermont shared current knowledge related to adaptive silviculture in order to nurture reflexion and dialogue about actions that can be taken today to help forests to adapt with the anticipated changes. The symposium covered the theoretical framework of adaptive silviculture, then offered case studies of different ecosystems, innovative tools or research initiatives. The symposium also included presentations by practitioners who described the challenges and opportunities offered by adaptive silviculture in their professional practice. Based on an interactive discussion, participants identified increased drought events, partial cuttings and mixed-species plantations as important topics on which researchers and practitioners should interact in years to come.

Dans le cadre du Carrefour Forêts 2019, le colloque Sylviculture d’adaptation aux changements climatiques : des concepts à la réalité, organisé conjointement par la Direction de la recherche forestière du ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec et le Centre canadien sur la fibre de bois de Ressources naturelles Canada, a rassemblé une centaine d’acteurs du milieu forestier incluant des ingénieurs forestiers, des biologistes, des techniciens forestiers, des propriétaires de boisés, des professeurs, des chercheurs et des étudiants. Des conférenciers de différentes régions du Québec et du Vermont ont partagé les connaissances actuelles en rapport avec la sylviculture d’adaptation afin d’amorcer la réflexion et le dialogue quant aux actions pouvant être entreprises dès maintenant pour favoriser l’adaptation des forêts aux changements anticipés. Les présentations ont abordé les fondements théoriques de la sylviculture d’adaptation, pour ensuite présenter des réflexions ou des études de cas portant sur différents types d’écosystèmes, des outils innovants ou des initiatives de recherche. Le colloque a également laissé une place aux praticiens qui ont pu décrire les défis et les occasions qu’offre la sylviculture d’adaptation dans leur pratique professionnelle. Au terme d’une activité interactive, les participants ont ciblé les sécheresses accrues, les coupes partielles et les plantations mélangées comme des thèmes importants qui devraient animer les échanges entre les chercheurs et les praticiens dans les années à venir.

The maintenance of old-growth stands is important for sustaining natural forest ecosystems, but fire disturbances and commonly-used timber harvest practices exert adverse impacts on the retention of old-growth forests. Forest management planning prescribes harvest levels based on the planning policy and models, but the impact of the management strategies on the retention of old-growth forests has not been well studied. The objectives of this study were to examine: a) the impact of implementing three different harvest policies on the retention of old-growth forest and b) the impact of implementing a policy of maintaining a targeted minimum of 20% old-growth area on the harvest revenue that would be generated over a long planning horizon. To simulate the implementation of these policies, we developed three strategic timber harvest-scheduling models. The first model (Model 1) maximizes harvest timber volume; Model 2 maximizes the net present value (NPV) of the timber harvested; and Model 3 maximizes the NPV of value-added products at the primary processing mills. The value-added products we considered were lumber, chips and sawdust. The models were solved for three forest management units with different fire regimes. Solutions to models that did not include a strict constraint on old-growth forest area retention did not retain the targeted level of old-growth forest over a 150-year planning horizon. When an old-growth constraint was implemented, Model 3 produced the greatest revenue with the least variation by 5-year period over the planning horizon. The probability of finding a feasible solution to our optimization Model 3 with an old-growth forest constraint increased to 0.87–1.0 compared with 0.71–0.83 using Model 1, and 0.78–0.87 using Model 2. We conclude that the value-added policy model increases the probability of sustaining the bioeconomy while preserving forest ecosystems initiated by disturbance.

Commonly-used sustained yield harvest policies ensure sustained supply of harvest timber volume over a planning horizon. However, implemented policies gradually decapitalize forest values over time that threatens the sustainability of ecosystem and wood industries. Different business units of a forest-product supply chain have different ways of valuing forestry resources, different supply and demand policies, and corresponding business policy models to implement them. The objective of this study was to evaluate ecological and economic impacts to participating business units of a supply chain when implementing different business policies. We constructed six business models in a linear programming framework and solved them using data from commercially-managed forests. Our empirical results showed that compared to a base model (Model 1; unilateral decision by forest business unit), the best model (Model 6; integrated harvest and production planning) reduced the median harvest volume and area by 25% (12–31%) and 24% (7–40%), respectively, but increased net revenue by 88% (6–218%) over a 150-year planning horizon. Hence, efficiency increased by 158% (20–373%) per unit of harvest area and 163% (23–364%) per unit of harvest volume. Furthermore, when the models were simulated using a hard constraint to preserve at least 20% of old-growth forest area, the revenue was least affected (15%; 11–19%) by Model 6 compared to Model 1 (26%; 14–45%). We conclude that vertically-integrated harvest policy that embeds forest values in the planning model reduces the gap between the business units, and enhances ecosystem conservation with the least fluctuation of harvest and revenue by period over a planning horizon.

Partial cutting has been recommended as an alternative harvesting method to ensure the sustainable management of boreal forests. The success of this approach is closely linked to the survival of residual trees as additional losses through mortality could affect post-cutting timber production at harvest. To better quantify post-cutting mortality in previously unmanaged boreal forests, we addressed two main questions: (1) what is the level of mortality ten years after cutting? and (2) what ecological factors are involved in this phenomenon? Even-aged black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] stands in the Canadian boreal forest were subjected to three experimental shelterwood treatments, a seed-tree treatment and an untreated control. Tree status (live/dead) was recorded prior to cutting and ten years after cutting. Dead trees were classified as standing dead, overturned or broken. Ten years after experimental seed-tree treatment, 60% of residual trees were dead, compared to 30% for the shelterwood cuttings. Windthrow (overturned and broken trees) represented 80% of residual tree mortality; only the amount of overturning was influenced by treatment. Broken trees were associated with small-diameter trunks, stands having high growth prior to cutting, younger stands or forest plots located near to adjacent cuts (

The Eastern boreal forests of Quebec, Canada, have been extensively harvested over the past decades. Second-growth stands originating from sites harvested between 1920 and 1950 will soon reach the stage allowing for a second harvest. In order to guide the decision-makers responsible for ecosystem-based management of these forests, their specific management issues must be identified, based on the best knowledge available. In this context, we used the Delphi method and asked experts to identify and prioritize the main ecological issues related to the management of second-growth forests. Fourteen experts participated in at least one round of the process, out of an initial population of 30 known experts. After three rounds of questions, experts identified the maintenance of old-growth forests as the most important issue related to second-growth forest management in this region. The protection of woodland caribou and its habitat, and land fragmentation by forest roads were the second and third most important issues identified by the Delphi survey participants. These issues are not unique to second-growth forests, but should be given priority in considering management strategies associated with second-growth stands.

Forest regeneration is a key element in achieving sustainable forest management. Partial harvest methods have been used extensively in temperate broadleaf and mixedwood ecosystems to promote regeneration on poorly stocked sites and to maintain forest composition and productivity. However, their effectiveness in promoting conifer establishment has yet to be demonstrated in unmanaged boreal forests, especially those dominated by black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) where constraints for regeneration differ from those found in more meridional regions. We aimed to evaluate conifer seedling density and dimensions, 10 years after the onset of a gradient of silvicultural treatments varying in harvesting intensities, and to identify the critical factors driving the regeneration process. Study blocks of even-aged black spruce stands in the eastern Canadian boreal forest were submitted to three variants of shelterwood harvesting: a seed-tree harvest, a clear-cut and an untreated control. Shelterwood and seed-tree harvesting were combined with spot scarification to promote regeneration. Shelterwood and seed-tree harvesting produced a density of conifer regeneration sufficient to maintain forest productivity, but they did not promote seedling growth. Black spruce was the predominant species in terms of regeneration density, with proportions 3–5× higher than that for balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.). Ten years after treatment, seed-origin black spruce seedlings were abundant in skidding trails, while layers dominated the residual strips. Balsam fir density was not influenced by treatment nor by tree position relative to skidding trails. Balsam fir and black spruce had different responses to treatment in terms of height and diameter, the former exhibiting a better growth performance and larger diameter in the residual strips. Spot scarification created micro-sites that had a significant impact on the regeneration process. Overall, our results support that shelterwood and seed-tree harvesting combined with scarification enable adequate regeneration in black spruce stands, confirming these treatments as viable silvicultural alternatives to clear-cutting when required by sustainable forest management objectives.

Forest management alters patterns generated by natural disturbances, particularly in ecosystems with infrequent fires. Management effects can differ according to spatial scale and affect ecological processes. To assess the effect of 80 years of forest management at both the landscape and burn/harvest scales on forest age, composition, density, spatial pattern and heterogeneity. Forest inventory maps and satellite images were used to compare two contiguous landscapes, respectively managed and unmanaged, of the eastern boreal forest of Canada, in a region with infrequent fires. Burns and harvests occurring from 1920–1950 were also compared. In addition to reducing the proportion of old-growth stands in the landscape, forest management changed forest composition at both scales, favouring the late-successional species balsam fir. Landscape metrics indicated that old-growth forests and spruce-dominated ones were more fragmented, less connected, and confined to smaller patches in the managed landscape than in the unmanaged one. Forest management increased heterogeneity at the landscape scale, but decreased it at the burn/harvest scale. Logging had a homogenizing effect at the burn/harvest scale by attenuating the effect of the physical environment on forest density. This study provides knowledge to help reduce effects of forest management at both scales. In this forest region with low fire recurrence, the goal should be to manage for greater forest heterogeneity at the burn/harvest scale whereas, at the landscape scale, restoration strategies should aim to create large contiguous patches of coniferous forests to increase spatial continuity as these were reduced by past management activities.

Forest ecosystem management heads towards the use of partial cuttings. However, the wide variation in growth response of residual trees remains unexplained, preventing a suitable prediction of forest productivity. The aim of the study was to assess individual growth and identify the driving factors involved in the responses of residual trees. Six study blocks in even-aged black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] stands of the eastern Canadian boreal forest were submitted to experimental shelterwood and seed-tree treatments. Individual-tree models were applied to 1039 trees to analyze their patterns of radial growth during the 10 years after partial cutting by using the nonlinear Schnute function on tree-ring series. The trees exhibited different growth patterns. A sigmoid growth was detected in 32% of trees, mainly in control plots of older stands. Forty-seven percent of trees located in the interior of residual strips showed an S-shape, which was influenced by stand mortality, harvested intensity and dominant height. Individuals showing an exponential pattern produced the greatest radial growth after cutting and were edge trees of younger stands with higher dominant height. A steady growth decline was observed in 4% of trees, represented by the individuals suppressed and insensitive to the treatment. The analyses demonstrated that individual nonlinear models are able to assess the variability in growth within the stand and the factors involved in the occurrence of the different growth patterns, thus improving understanding of the tree responses to partial cutting. This new approach can sustain forest management strategies by defining the best conditions to optimize the growth yield of residual trees.

In eastern Canada, past diameter-limit cutting left a legacy of low-density and heterogeneous hardwood stands. The complex stand structure and variable density hinders the application of uniform treatments for stand regeneration and rehabilitation. This article describes an innovative approach called the “multiple-treatment irregular shelterwood system.” Two variants of the method are presented to achieve extended irregular shelterwood and continuous cover irregular shelterwood. The silvicultural prescription recognizes microstands that are grouped into microtypes based mainly on sapling stocking and tree canopy closure. For each microstand, harvesting of mature trees is allowed if the understory has sufficient stocking of saplings. If not, partial cutting and/or soil scarification is prescribed to promote regeneration. The design of the trail system and the sequence of entries are adapted for each irregular shelterwood variant. Results from two field trials show that this method is operationally feasible. Existing advance regeneration was adequately protected, and favorable microsite conditions were created when sufficient regeneration was lacking. Half of the volume of wood was harvested from test sites with no high grading of species composition or tree quality, while maintaining a high degree of structural heterogeneity.

Partial cutting is thought to be an alternative to achieve sustainable management in boreal forests. However, the effects of intermediate harvest intensity (45%–80%) on growth remain unknown in black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) stands, one of the most widely distributed boreal species with great commercial interest. In this study, we analysed the effect of three experimental shelterwood and one seed-tree treatments on tree radial growth in even-aged black spruce stands, 10 years after intervention. Our results show that radial growth response 8–10 years after cutting was 41% to 62% higher than in untreated plots, with stand structure, treatment, tree position relative to skidding trails, growth before cutting and time having significant interactions. The stand structure conditioned tree growth after cutting, being doubled in younger and denser stands. Tree spatial position had a pronounced effect on radial growth; trees at the edge of the skidding trails showed twice the increase in growth compared to interior trees. Dominant trees before cutting located close to the skidding trails manifested the highest growth response after cutting. This research suggests that the studied treatments are effective to enhance radial wood production of black spruce especially in younger stands, and that the edge effect must be considered in silvicultural management planning.

Knowledge of the long-term effects of silviculture treatments is crucial to forest management. The long-term effects of thinning, a common and widely used silviculture treatment, is little documented for upland black spruce ( Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb.) stands. We revisited a partial cutting experiment installed in 1961 in a 65-year-old unmanaged upland black spruce stand. The aim was to document the long-term effects of thinning on tree and stand growth and to complete previously published results of the first 15 years of response to thinning by determining its influence in terms of merchantable volume. Free thinning was applied following three intensities: 0%, 25%, and 50% of total basal area removal. The retrospective analysis of growth rings showed that the response over the first 15 years was less significant when determined in net merchantable volume instead of net total volume. Heavily thinned plots, nonetheless, showed a net stand merchantable volume increment 33% greater than that of the unthinned plots. In the longer term, a spruce budworm ( Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens) outbreak affected the site; nevertheless, the heavily thinned plots maintained a superior tree growth rate and did not show senescence mortality like the other plots, allowing stand volume to catch up to that of the unthinned plots after 33 years. Results suggested that thinning upland black spruce stands may be useful in mitigating reductions in volume production associated with growing stands to longer rotations as called for by certain ecosystem-based management approaches.

Summary This study compares the financial return of converting old-growth boreal stands into even-aged stands to that of two approaches of selection cutting in Quebec (Canada). In this region, old-growth stands are usually harvested by completely removing the canopy while protecting the abundant advance regeneration, an approach known as careful logging around advance growth (CLAAG). These approaches were compared using a time frame of over 200 years. Consideration is given to the majority of the operating costs leading to end products. The financial analysis integrates Monte Carlo simulations, making it possible to consider the uncertainty associated with variables. The net present values (NPVs) are then associated with a distribution of probabilities. The results show that the probabilities of obtaining positive NPVs are high for all treatments, suggesting that selection cutting approaches can be appropriate alternatives to CLAAG for some stands. Depending on the criteria used, the CLAAG cut or one of the selection cuts show the best performances. In fact, the results of the financial study show that in the future, selection cutting approaches will be more profitable than CLAAG but still less than present CLAAG operations. This occurs because, according to the current yield curves and rotation ages, future stands managed with CLAAG will have smaller and less valuable trees than in the primary forest and in stands managed with the selection system.

Regeneration of northern white-cedar ( Thuja occidentalis L.) is often deficient after harvesting in mixedwood stands growing on mesic sites even where browsing pressure is low. We compared the effectiveness of silviculture treatments on early regeneration of white-cedar after single-tree selection cutting (25% of basal area removed), shelterwood seed cut (50% of basal area removed), and group selection cutting (gaps of 625 m2) in three yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) – softwood uneven-aged stands in Quebec, Canada. Three years after harvesting, the combination of factors that maximized abundance of white-cedar seedlings was single-tree selection cutting with artificial seeding on exposed mineral seedbeds (68.8% of plots with the presence of white-cedar). Early growth of planted white-cedar seedlings (40 cm tall) and biomass production were proportional to light availability, i.e., best under group selection cutting (mean height increment = 14.8 cm/year, mean root collar diameter increment = 3.0 mm/year). Browsing pressure has regional impacts depending on herbivore occupancy of the area. Our study was conducted near the northern limit of white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman, 1780)), and deer were locally absent, while snowshoe hare ( Lepus americanus Erxleben, 1777) did not have a consistent effect on seedling abundance and early survival, limiting height growth only during the first year following planting.

It is increasingly accepted that silviculture must now try to maintain complex stands. In this context, selection cutting has been suggested as an option for irregular boreal stands. However, selection cutting in virgin stands could prove difficult to apply at a reasonable cost. In an attempt to reduce harvesting costs, two selection cutting patterns were implemented, avoiding tree marking. The efficacy of this approach was evaluated by comparing the results of plots harvested without tree marking to those with tree marking. To proceed in the absence of tree marking, silvicultural types were defined as well as a rule for the selection of stems to harvest; the final choice of stems to fell was therefore left to the operator upon harvesting. The effects of the different silvicultural and tree marking treatments were examined in relation to their ability to maintain the main structural and functional attributes of irregular boreal stands. A follow-up was conducted with regards to structure, composition, residual stand basal area, abundance of woody debris and mortality. The absence of marking did not affect the performance of selection cutting treatments in terms of basal area, quadratic mean diameter and Shannon index. Tree vigour was not modified by harvesting, both with and without tree marking. Stand composition was not influenced by the absence of marking. Snag abundance was reduced to similar levels regardless of marking. Tree marking did not influence the abundance of downed woody debris. As a consequence, it seems possible to apply a simplified approach of selection cutting, without compromising the success of the treatment in these stands.Key words: black spruce, Picea mariana, balsam fir, Abies balsamea, irregular stand, selection cutting, ecosystem management, forest attributes

We present the 6 year effects of different cutting patterns (patch-selection cutting with 20, 30, and 40 m diameter gaps, 1 ha patch clear-cut, and uncut control) and spot scarification, on seedbed coverage and regeneration dynamics in yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis Britton) – conifer stands in eastern Quebec, Canada. After 3 years, yellow birch had established better in cutting patterns with gaps than in the patch clear-cut and in the control, while its density was 7 times higher in scarified than in nonscarified subplots. After 6 years, scarified openings and the borders of openings had 3–5 times more seedlings >30 cm in height than nonscarified openings and the understory between the gaps. The loss of advance growth in openings was the main result for conifer species, although recruitment of new balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) seedlings was accelerated by scarification. Despite the abundance of red spruce ( Picea rubens Sarg.) seed-trees on the site, our treatment combinations failed to promote its natural regeneration. Varying gap size did not change the total density of competing vegetation but modified the composition of this shrub layer. Our 6 year results suggest that maintaining conifer species, and the mixed composition of the stands, is uncertain over the long term.

Many hardwood or mixedwood stands of northeastern North America have been high graded in the past and need restoration treatments to bring them back to an acceptable level of production. Even when early seedling establishment can be secured, further development may be compromised bymany factors. This study looks at the effect of seedbed, browsing, and competition on the growth and survival of yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britt.) seedlings that became established after a brushing and scarification treatment applied in high-graded mixedwood stands of Quebec,Canada. The seedbed types studied include 1-m-wide scarified patches, 2-m-wide scarified patches, and mounds. Browsing impact was assessed by placing fences around half of the plots. Half of the plots were released from competing vegetation. Browsing by hare (Lepus americanus) was seenas a major factor controlling seedling development between 3 and 6 years after scarification. It reduced both survival and growth and obscured the effect of other factors. In the absence of browsing, competition had a major effect on mounds but not on scarified patches. Mounds were found tohave the best growth potential when competition and browsing were controlled. The scarified patches had the best growth when competition and browsing were allowed. Even though mortality was somewhat higher on scarified patches, initial densities were very high and still provide more seedlingsthan required.

The selection system is a common management system in uneven-aged tolerant hardwoods stands in Crown forests of eastern Canada. This silvicultural system aims to produce a sustained yield of products and services at the stand level, using frequent partial cuttings that harvest the mature and valuable portion of the forest, while tending the rest of the stand to increase its productivity and value for future cuttings. Current practices involve the use of empirical partial cutting guides to decide the number of trees to both harvest and maintain at each cutting cycle, typically to maximize longterm sawlog and veneer production. This paper demonstrates that by replacing this objective function with the maximization of the net value of the harvest for the whole value chain by using a simple mathematical optimization model, forest management can be greatly improved in terms of profitability. Nevertheless, further developments are needed for improving forest management optimization models in order to better balance short-term profitability and long-term ecological, economic and societal objectives. This paper examined the impact of commercial thinning on selected wood properties of jack pine ( Pinus banksiana Lamb.). Wood properties evaluated include wood density (ring density, earlywood ring density, and latewood ring density), percentage of latewood in the ring, and wood bending properties. Nonlinear, mixed-effect models have been developed using data from three commercially thinned sites in eastern Canada. Ring density followed the same pattern as percentage of latewood, in which cambial age, relative height, and ring width were found to have important effects. Earlywood and latewood ring densities changed within the juvenile wood zone until a plateau was reached. Ring width affected earlywood and latewood ring densities mainly in narrow rings. Wood bending stiffness (measured by modulus of elasticity) and strength (measured by modulus of rupture) increased with cambial age and wood density; whereas, wood strength was also affected by ring width. Commercial thinning did not influence the developed models, but it had an indirect effect through increased ring width.

The abundance of poor quality stands in the North American hardwood and mixedwood forests poses important regeneration challenges. These stands have an open canopy with a well-developed shrub layer dominated by noncommercial species. The present study aims at testing the efficiency of a natural regeneration approach using a combination of brushing and spot scarification in the cleared strips. Four high-graded stands from the mixedwood zone in Quebec were selected and strips were cleared with a brush saw. Four microsite types created by the scarification were studied: 1-m and 2-m wide pockets, mounds and undisturbed forest floor. The amount of dispersed yellow birch seeds was adequate for two out of the three years of the study. Yellow birch establishment was in phase with seed years and was better on disturbed microsites. Best establishment was observed in seed spots and light conditions in these microsites after three years were better than on mounds or undisturbed ground. On the latter two, survival will likely be impaired by the poor light conditions. Seed spots remain receptive three years after scarification. Softwood regeneration was poor due to a lack of seed trees. The study has shown that seed tree abundance remains sufficient for natural regeneration even in these open stands. It also showed a very rapid regrowth of competing vegetation when root systems and seed banks were not removed by site preparation. The Canadian boreal forest covers a wide territory within which the natural disturbance regime varies widely. The specific dynamics of the eastern portion is responsible for an abundance of stands of irregular structure, which influences ecosystem biodiversity. Partial cuts should therefore play an important role in an adapted silviculture that focuses on maintaining biodiversity. However, the practice of partial cuts in the context of irregular boreal forests still needs to be developed. In this context, an integrated experiment comparing the current harvesting practices (careful logging preserving advance regeneration, cutting leaving small merchantable stems) and two selection cutting methods was put in place. It will enable us to compare the effect of these practices on operational plans, silviculture, wildlife and wood processing. This experiment has already shown that it is possible to operationally maintain a well-developed stand structure after cutting. Both selection cutting approaches have led to increases in harvesting costs but these were kept low. Future monitoring will clarify the effects of these treatments in terms of vegetation and wildlife, and whether gains can be obtained when processing wood from partial cuts. Canadian forestry practices are changing to meet evolving forest management objectives, and these changes are frequently accompanied by new terminology.We examine the interaction among changing objectives, changing practices, and terminology in three forest types across Canada. Altered silvicultural practices and systems can generally be described using traditional terminology, and applying new terminology may create confusion. The most notable developments in silvicultural practice involve timber harvests with greater levels of tree retention, and new terminology is being applied mainly to designate changed harvest patterns. Timber harvesting is a crucial silvicultural practice, but does not by itself constitute a silvicultural system. It is necessary to more thoroughly define long-term stand-level management objectives, and to delineate complete silvicultural systems that address these objectives. This will require better knowledge of the long-term effects of forestry practices, particularly those resulting in structurally complex stands. This paper presents a method for preparing wood sections and reading tree rings in diffuse-porous hardwoods that is more efficient than the standard sanding method. The planning of fresh samples and the use of an ultraviolet light source in conjunction with a fluorescent dye reduced the preparation time by 39%. No significant differences were found between the two methods for the time needed for ring count. The fluorescent method can be used for both wood sections and cores, and it can be applied to coniferous species. The mortality pattern of 14 black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) stands from the Saguenay region (Quebec), originating from fire or clear-cutting in the early 20th century, was reconstructed based on the dendrochronological dating of dead trees. Most of the spruces died during the 1970s and 1980s, which suggests the possible impact of the most recent spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) outbreak. This hypothesis is supported by the observation of major growth reductions synchronous with known outbreak periods and by the existence of a significant partial correlation between the mortality rates and the occurrence of outbreaks. A significant partial correlation between the mortality rates and the relative density of the studied stands suggests that competition amongst individuals might act as a predisposing factor to the death of trees, while the outbreaks act as an inciting factor. The observed mortality pattern is similar to self-thinning, since most of the dead trees were from the smallest size classes.

The widespread use of careful logging in the province of Quebec raises many questions about the effects of this practice on the structure and productivity of boreal black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) BSP) stands compared with fire-origin stands that are currently being harvested. The objective of this study is to describe and compare the evolution pattern of the diameter structure of stands originating from fire or logging dating back to the first half of the 20th century. The dendrochronological approach allowed the reconstitution of the dynamics of 40- to 96-year-old stands. Second-growth stands differ from fire-origin stands by their highly hierarchized initial structure. After the recruitment period, the degree of hierarchy of the structure of second-growth and fire-origin stands is comparable. After logging, the diameter structure of black spruce stands keeps a higher skewness index than that of stands originating from fire. For both stand types the skewness decreases or remains constant with time, which invalidates the model proposed by Mohler et al. (C.L. Mohler, P.L. Marks, and D.G. Sprugel. 1978. J. Ecol. 66: 599–614). This observation questions the existence of a strong asymmetric competition among trees in black spruce stands. Results indicate that the yield of black spruce stands originating from clearcuts from the early 20th century is higher than or equal to fire-origin stands mainly because (i) basal area was maintained to levels higher than or equal to fire-origin stands and (ii) most advanced growth was taller that 1 m at the time of logging.

Balsam fir basal area growth was studied 5 years after the preparatory cut in the context of natural regeneration by the shelterwood system. The study was carried out in a 60-year-old second-growth balsam fir-yellow birch stand. The felling trials were realized in 16 plots and consisted of control and three felling regimes (15, 30 and 45% of removed basal area). The periodic (5 years) mean growth rate on dbh of trees in plots varies between 6 and 12% in response to felling intensity. The basal area of plots presents a mean periodic growth rate of 7.4% independently of felling intensity. There are highly significant correlations between the live crown characteristics and periodic basal area growth. This growth is highly correlated with inital diameter and intensity of felling. The trees of higher relative size are more productive than the others and the impact of felling on periodic basal area growth is significant when the intensity of felling is greater than 30%. Conversely, the ratio between periodic basal area growth after treatment and periodic basal area growth before treatment is correlated only with the intensity of felling. Analysis was performed on 112 stems of black spruce (Piceamariana (Mill.) BSP) from the Réserve faunique des Laurentides to compare the growth in height, DBH, and volume of layers released by clear-cutting to the growth of individuals of comparable age originating from seeds after fire. The sampled stands originated from fires and clear-cuttings that occurred between 1894 and 1941. Stem analysis also permitted the calculation of specific volume increment, which corresponds to the annual volume increment divided by the surface of the cambium. Results show that height, DBH, and volume measured 60 years after clear-cutting were better correlated to the height of the advanced growth at the moment of release (Ho) than to the number of years of suppression. The mean annual increments in height and DBH of released layers were positively related to height at the year of logging when the height was less than 2 m. When layers were taller, mean annual increments in height and DBH were negatively related to initial height. These relationships were however variable, since for two-thirds of the stand's life, the periodic annual increments in height and diameter did not differ significantly (α = 0.05) between small (Ho o ≤ 2 m), and large second-growth spruces (Ho > 2 m). The superiority of taller layers is consequently due to greater heights before release. Volume growth rate of layers was positively related to initial height until approximately 60 years after clear-cutting. However, no differences in specific volume increment could be associated with initial height. Therefore, the relationship between initial height and volume increment can be attributed to the difference of cambial area between small, medium, and large second-growth spruces. Black spruce originating from seeds had greater height, DBH, and specific volume increments than second-growth trees, until about 50 years after stand origin. Thereafter, growth rates are comparable. Consequently, after 40 years, stands originating from seeds are comparable in height, volume, and DBH to layers that reached between 1 and 2 m in height after clear-cutting. Neither drainage class nor point density had a significant effect on the sampled black spruces. Stem analysis also revealed an important growth reduction that can be associated with the last spruce budworm (Choristoneurafumiferana Clem.) outbreak in the Réserve faunique des Laurentides. We can deduce from the results of this study that the performance of second-growth stands compared with fire-origin stands will mainly depend on the density of the advanced growth and its height structure.

International audience; - The dynamics of pure jack pine (Pinus banksiana) stands and of those also comprising a component of white birch (Betula papyrifera) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) was assessed in natural post-fire stands on clay soils of eastern Canada boreal mixed woods in order to shed some light on mechanisms controlling composition. Age structures indicated that the presence of birch or aspen merely shortened the establishment of jack pine. Basal area structures of jack pine showed lower skewness coefficients in mixtures with birch than in pure jack pine stands or when mixed with aspen indicating that birch is probably a weaker competitor. Its effect on mean pine diameter probably reflects the lower pine stem density when mixed with birch. Inter-specific competition however had no effect on pine diameter at the tree level. Competition between birch, aspen and pine is avoided by species spatial exclusion measured by Ripley's statistic and reflects the reproductive strategies of the species and history of the site.; - Structure, distribution spatiale et compétition dans les peuplements mélangés et purs de pin gris (Pinus banksiana) sur argile dans l'est canadien. Nous avons étudié la dynamique des peuplements de pin gris purs (Pinus banksiana) et mélangés au bouleau à papier (Betula papyrifera) et au peuplier faux-tremble (Populus tremuloides), établis naturellement après un incendie sur sol argileux en forêt boréale mixte de l'est canadien dans le but de mieux comprendre ce qui contrôle leur composition. Les structures d'âge indiquent peu de différence dans le délai d'établissement du pin gris selon la composition. Les surfaces terrières des pins gris montrent de plus faibles coefficients d'asymétrie en mélange avec le bouleau qu'avec le peuplier, ce qui laisse à penser que le bouleau est un plus faible compétiteur. L'effet du bouleau sur le diamètre moyen du pin reflète la plus faible densité du pin en peuplements mélangés à du bouleau. La compétition interspécifique n'a cependant pas affecté le diamètre du pin à l'échelle de l'arbre. La compétition interspécifique est évitée par l'exclusion spatiale des espèces mise en évidence par la statistique de Ripley, ce qui reflète leur stratégies reproductives et l'historique du site.

Afin de comparer la croissance de marcottes adultes d'epinette noire apres coupe a celle d'epinettes noires d'origine sexuee d'âge comparable, des courbes de croissance en diametre, en hauteur et en volume total ont ete realisees grâce a l'analyse de tige de 112 individus recoltes dans la Reserve faunique des Laurentides. La moitie des epinettes noires provenait de coupes realisees entre 1890 et 1930, et l'autre, de feux de foret datant de la meme periode. L'analyse de tige a aussi permis d'evaluer l'activite cambiale, estimee a l'aide de l'accroissement specifique en volume (ASV), qui correspond au taux annuel de croissance en volume divise par la surface du cambium. Il appert que la hauteur, le diametre a hauteur de poitrine (DHP) et le volume atteints 60 ans apres coupe sont mieux correles a la hauteur de la regeneration preetablie au moment de la coupe qu'a la duree de la periode de suppression. Les accroissements annuels moyens (AAM) en hauteur et en DHP sont proportionnels a la hauteur initiale lorsque celle-ci est inferieure a deux metres. Depasse ce point, l'AAM en hauteur et en DHP decroissent en fonction de la hauteur initiale. Ces relations comportent toutefois une importante variance, si bien que sur plus des deux tiers de la periode de temps consideree, les taux de croissance annuelle courants en hauteur et en diametre ne different pas significativement entre les petites (Ho 2 m). Consequemment, la superiorite des marcottes de grande taille provient principalement de l'avance dont elles beneficient des le moment de la coupe. Le taux de croissance en volume total est correle positivement a la taille initiale jusqu'a environ 60 ans apres la coupe. Cependant, aucune relation significative n'a pu etre identifiee entre la taille initiale des marcottes et leur accroissement specifique en volume (ASV) apres la coupe. En consequence, les differences d'accroissement en volume entre les petites, moyennes et grandes marcottes sont dues a des differences de surface cambiale. Les epinettes noires d'origine sexuee presentent en moyenne des ASV ainsi que des taux de croissance en hauteur et en diametre significativement superieurs a ceux des epinettes de seconde venue jusqu'a la soixantieme annee apres l'origine du peuplement, apres quoi les differences observees ne sont plus significatives. Les individus d'origine sexuee rattrapent ainsi l'avance des epinettes de seconde venue, si bien que quarante annees apres l'origine du peuplement, les epinettes noires d'origine de graine ont un DHP, une hauteur et un volume comparables aux marcottes ayant entre 1 et 2 m au moment de la coupe. Ni la classe de drainage, ni le degre de competition (evalue par la densite ponctuelle) n'ont montre d'effet significatif sur la croissance en hauteur, en diametre ou en volume. D'autre part, les epinettes noires etudiees presentaient des reductions de croissance en hauteur et en diametre associees a la derniere epidemie de Tordeuse des bourgeons de l'epinette (Choristoneura fumiferana Clem.) dans la Reserve faunique des Laurentides. A la lumiere de ces resultats, on peut deduire que la performance des peuplements de seconde venue comparee a celle des peuplements naturels issus de graines apres feu dependra d'abord de la densite de la regeneration preetablie et de la repartition des tiges parmi les differentes classes de hauteur.
