1. Continuous Reactive-Roll-to-Roll Growth of Carbon Nanotubes for Fog Water Harvesting Applications

Abstract

A simple method is presented for the continuous generation of carbon nanotube forests stably anchored on stainless-steel surfaces using a reactive-roll-to-roll (RR2R) configuration. No addition of catalyst nanoparticles is required for the CNT-forest generation; the stainless-steel substrate itself is tuned to generate the catalytic growth sites. The process enables very large surfaces covered with CNT forests to have individual CNT roots anchored to the metallic ground through primary bonds. Fog water harvesting is demonstrated and tested as one potential application using long CNT-covered wires. The RR2R is performed in the gas phase; no solution processing of CNT suspensions is used, contrary to usual R2R CNT-based technologies. Full or partial CNT-forest coverage provides tuning of the ratio and shape of hydrophobic and hydrophilic zones on the surface. This enables the optimization of fog water harvesters for droplet capture through the hydrophobic CNT forest and water removal from the hydrophilic SS surface. Water recovery tests using small harp-type harvesters with CNT-forest generate water capture of up to 2.2 g/cm2·h under ultrasound-generated fog flow. The strong CNT root anchoring on the stainless-steel surfaces provides opportunities for (i) robustness and easy transport of the composite structure and (ii) chemical functionalization and/or nanoparticle decoration of the structures, and it opens the road for a series of applications on large-scale surfaces, including fog harvesting.

Abstract

Photo-initiated chemical vapor deposition (PICVD) functionalizes carbon nanotube (CNT)-enhanced porous substrates with a highly polar polymeric nanometric film, rendering them super-hydrophilic. Despite its ability to generate fully wettable surfaces at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure, PICVD coatings normally undergo hydrophobic recovery. This is a process by which a percentage of oxygenated functional group diffuse/re-arrange from the top layer of the deposited film towards the bulk of the substrate, taking the induced hydrophilic property of the material with them. Thus, hydrophilicity decreases over time. To address this, a vertical chemical gradient (VCG) can be deposited onto the CNT-substrate. The VCG consists of a first, thicker highly cross-linked layer followed by a second, thinner highly functionalized layer. In this article, we show, through water contact angle and XPS measurements, that the increased cross-linking density of the first layer can reduce the mobility of polar functional groups, forcing them to remain at the topmost layer of the PICVD coating and to suppress hydrophobic recovery. We show that employing a bi-layer VCG suppresses hydrophobic recovery for five days and reduces its effect afterwards (contact angle stabilizes to 42 ± 1° instead of 125 ± 3°).

Abstract

Water's viscosity dependence on pressure was also not affected by O-GNFs, except at 10 ppm, where the shuttle effect may have increased the presence of hydrophobic methane bubbles in the solution. Under high pressure, the relative viscosity of the system remained non-Einsteinian at all temperatures except 2C. This may have been because the density anomaly of water was shifted to a colder temperature as the hydrogen bonding network was weaker. The phase transition from liquid to hydrate was identical to that of pure water, indicating that the presence of different stages of growth was not affected by the presence of O-GNF. However, the times to reach a maximum viscosity were faster in O-GNF systems compared to pure water. This said, the hydrate formation limitations inherent to the measurement system were not overcome by the presence of O-GNFs. The times to application-relevant viscosity values were maximized in the 1 ppm system at 49.75 % (200 mPa.s) and 31.93 % (500 mPa.s) faster than the baseline. Therefore, the presence of O-GNFs allowed for shorter times to desired viscosities and at lower driving forces than the baseline, improving the viability of the hydrate technologies to which they can be added.

Abstract

The kinetics of water adsorption in powder sorbent layers are important to design a scaled-up atmospheric water capture device. Herein, the adsorption kinetics of three sorbents, a chromium (Cr)-based metal-organic framework (Cr-MIL-101), a carbon-based material (nanoporous sponges/NPS), and silica gel, have been tested experimentally, using powder layers ranging from ∼0 to 7.5 mm in thickness, in a custom-made calibrated environmental chamber cycling from 5 to 95% RH at 30 °C. A mass and energy transfer model was applied onto the experimental curves to better understand the contribution of key parameters (maximum water uptake, kinetics of single particles, layer open porosity, and particle size distribution). Open porosity (i.e., the void-to-particle ratio in the sorbent layer) shows the highest influence to improve the kinetics. Converting the sorbent kinetics data into a daily yield of captured water demonstrated (i) the existence of an optimal open porosity for each sorbent, (ii) that thinner layers with moderate open porosity performed respectively better than thicker layers with high open porosity, and (iii) that high maximum water uptake and fast single-particle kinetics are not necessarily predictive of high daily water yield.

Abstract

Gas hydrate technologies have steadily gained interest in several industries for their potential use in natural gas transport and carbon dioxide sequestration applications. To further develop these emerging technologies, significant focus has been placed on additives, and particularly nanoparticles, which optimize their efficiencies. The addition of materials such as graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) has previously been proven to enhance the production of methane hydrates and other hydrate systems. In this study, the growth rates of methane hydrates were measured in the presence of both hydrophobic (as-produced) and hydrophilic (plasma-functionalized) GNFs at 2 °C and 4646 kPa. The effect of GNF loading in the aqueous phase for both types was also determined. Small-scale agglomeration limited the growth rate enhancement effect of hydrophobic GNFs at low concentrations of around 0.5 ppm while significantly increasing the formation kinetics by about 101% at concentrations of 5 ppm. At even higher concentrations (10 ppm), the performance decreased due to large-scale agglomeration. Enhancement rose rapidly at low concentrations (0.1–1 ppm) of hydrophilic GNFs, peaking at about 288% before dropping to around 215% at 5 ppm due to mean free path limitations then rising again as surface area increased.

Abstract

The present electrocatalyst consists of copper and copper sulfide nanoparticles dispersed on graphene nanoflakes (GNFs), a stack of 5–20 highly crystalline graphene layers having typical side lengths of 100 by 100 nm. Plasma-based functionalization is used for adding covalently bonded nitrogen sites on the surface of the GNFs to a level of up to 2 at%. The catalyst nanoparticles are synthesized through wet chemistry, where graphene and a copper sulfate salt are mixed in a solvent and dried prior to pyrolysis under inert atmosphere at 700 °C. The amount of copper added to the carbon support is well controlled through this method, and is comprised between 20 and 50 wt%. Tests made towards the electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide show these catalysts generate a faradaic efficiency of up to 42.5% toward liquid products at −0.6 V vs RHE, with a high selectivity for formate. The performance of the catalysts is mostly driven by the amount of the copper sulfide phase rather than the metallic copper content, and competes with similar catalysts found in the literature for a fraction of the metal content.

Abstract

Binder-free carbon nanofiber (CNF) electrodes are prepared using a facile one-step process on nickel foam (Ni-f). The amalgamation of the innate Ni-f pores and nanostructure caused by the growth of the CNF is found to show a good aerial capacitance. Cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to electrochemically characterize these CNF/Ni-f supercapacitor electrodes. In a two-electrode cell using 6M KOH as an electrolyte, these electrodes show a good aerial capacitance of ca. 142 ± 7 mF/cm2 at 10 mA/cm2 and a specific energy of 62 mWh/m2 at a high-specific power of 82 W/m2. The electrodes also show a 100% retention in capacitance even after 10000 cycles at 10 mA/cm2. Simple one-step electrode preparation process with no external catalyst, reasonable aerial capacitance, excellent stability, and ideal retention of specific energy with an increase in specific power, makes this an interesting material for thin energy storage devices.

Abstract

Interest in the direct growth of carbon nanostructures on metal substrates is growing, especially in the field of supercapacitors, fuel cells, batteries and sensors. This paper presents results on the growth of carbon nanofibers (CNF) without the requirement of an external catalyst directly on nickel foam (Ni-foam) at a relatively low temperature of 400 °C. Etching of Ni-foam leads to the growth of CNF forests covering entirely the internal surfaces of the Ni-foam, with CNF diameters that can be tuned between 78 ± 32 nm and 375 ± 35 nm through a change in the growth temperature between 400 and 700 °C. Etching was found to be important to obtain a uniform surface CNF coverage and growth, particularly at higher temperatures. These CNF/Ni-foam composites yield 3D nano-scale internal forest structures in good contact with the micro-scale porosity of the metallic foam electrode. This work provides a foundation to use binderless CNF composite electrodes to obtain higher capacitance.

Abstract

A batch process is developed to generate sulphur functionalized graphene nanoflakes (S-GNFs), corresponding to nanoparticles of stacked graphene. The growth and functionalization of the catalysts are done in a single thermal plasma reactor. The GNFs are first grown through the decomposition of methane in the thermal plasma volume followed by homogeneous nucleation of the nanoparticles in the well-controlled recombining plasma stream allowing the 2-dimensional evolution of the nanoparticle morphology. The precursor feeding conditions are then changed to liquid carbon disulphide in order to generate sulphur-based functional groups on the nanoparticles. The plasma conditions and carbon disulphide injection are varied, and samples with tuneable amount of sulphur between 4 and 28 at% are obtained. The functional groups generated include polythiophene polymer partly covering the GNFs, sulphur functionalities implemented directly on the graphitic structure, and traces of orthorhombic sulphur. The S-GNFs exhibit higher electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline medium for the samples containing the highest amounts of sulphur.

Abstract

A cost effective alternative catalyst to platinum for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is iron nanoparticles deposited into nitrogen-rich stacked graphene sheets. In this work graphene nanoflakes with high levels of nitrogen (HN-GNFs) are grown from the plasma phase and iron functionalities are added by a wet-chemical method. The amount of iron is varied to study the structural and electrochemical effects on the catalyst. The amount of iron in the sample and on the surface is measured and proven to have no effect on the qualitative surface conditions of HN-GNFs, as the iron is imbedded into the HN-GNFs. Electrochemical studies with a rotating disk electrode reveal that the addition of iron is beneficial in acid and neutral environments, with improvements of over 0.3 V to the onset potential and 1.85 mA cm −2 to the current density at 0 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode when the iron catalysts are compared to untreated HN-GNFs. The iron did not improve the catalytic performance in alkaline environments, with untreated HN-GNFs already showing good activity towards the ORR.

We share a French-English parallel corpus of Foursquare restaurant reviews (https://europe.naverlabs.com/research/natural-language-processing/machine-translation-of-restaurant-reviews), and define a new task to encourage research on Neural Machine Translation robustness and domain adaptation, in a real-world scenario where better-quality MT would be greatly beneficial. We discuss the challenges of such user-generated content, and train good baseline models that build upon the latest techniques for MT robustness. We also perform an extensive evaluation (automatic and human) that shows significant improvements over existing online systems. Abstract

Purpose An overview of the current use of handwritten text recognition (HTR) on archival manuscript material, as provided by the EU H2020 funded Transkribus platform. It explains HTR, demonstrates Transkribus, gives examples of use cases, highlights the affect HTR may have on scholarship, and evidences this turning point of the advanced use of digitised heritage content. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This paper adopts a case study approach, using the development and delivery of the one openly available HTR platform for manuscript material. Findings Transkribus has demonstrated that HTR is now a useable technology that can be employed in conjunction with mass digitisation to generate accurate transcripts of archival material. Use cases are demonstrated, and a cooperative model is suggested as a way to ensure sustainability and scaling of the platform. However, funding and resourcing issues are identified. Research limitations/implications The paper presents results from projects: further user studies could be undertaken involving interviews, surveys, etc. Practical implications Only HTR provided via Transkribus is covered: however, this is the only publicly available platform for HTR on individual collections of historical documents at time of writing and it represents the current state-of-the-art in this field. Social implications The increased access to information contained within historical texts has the potential to be transformational for both institutions and individuals. Originality/value This is the first published overview of how HTR is used by a wide archival studies community, reporting and showcasing current application of handwriting technology in the cultural heritage sector.

Abstract

We consider the Document Understanding problem of segmenting tables in rows. We propose a method that first enumerates virtual row separator candidates and then select the correct ones thanks to a classification task, solved using supervised structured machine learning. Interestingly, the task is the joint-classification of virtual separators and real text lines. We describe and tested several alternative candidate generation methods and report the results of our experiment for each, on two different types of registry books from the 19th century.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). Abstract

We present in this paper experiments on Table Recognition in hand-written registry books. We first explain how the problem of row and column detection is modeled, and then compare two Machine Learning approaches (Conditional Random Field and Graph Convolutional Network) for detecting these table elements. Evaluation was conducted on death records provided by the Archive of the Diocese of Passau. Both methods show similar results, a 89 F1 score, a quality which allows for Information Extraction.
