Abstract

In 2022–2023, the first survey of clinicians regarding Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection of rabbits was undertaken. The purpose was to assess the current worldwide knowledge of clinicians regarding influence of breed and age, clinical presentations, use of various diagnostic tools, and treatment regimens and to explore how responses may differ by geographic location. Identifying mostly as exotic animal clinicians, 339 respondents participated, with nearly half from the United States and the remainder from 35 other countries. Neurological signs were most consistently reported as associated with Encephalitozoon cuniculi and the most recurrent clinical case presentation. Other responses showed differences by geographic location. For example, age predilection for disease varied, with 71.1% of international respondents indicating that infection was more common in young rabbits versus 28.9% who suggested it was more frequent in older rabbits. This was significantly different (p = 0.001) from the information from respondents from the United States, where 48.0% indicated that younger rabbits had an increased incidence versus 52.0% who indicated that older age increased occurrence. While some differences may be related to the practice composition and the training level of respondents, many responses were in alignment with the existing literature. Future inquiries should focus more on these discrepancies to aid in generating guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of this infectious disease.

Abstract

Summary: Background: In industrialized countries, the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appears stabilized. This study examined the incidence and phenotype of IBD in Northern France over a 30-year period. Methods: Including all IBD patients recorded in the EPIMAD population-based registry from 1988 to 2017 in Northern France, we described the incidence and clinical presentation of IBD according to age, sex and time. Findings: A total of 22,879 incident IBD cases were documented (59% (n = 13,445) of Crohn’s disease (CD), 38% (n = 8803) of ulcerative colitis (UC), 3% (n = 631) of IBD unclassified (IBDU)). Over the study period, incidence of IBD, CD and UC was 12.7, 7.2 and 5.1 per 105 person-years, respectively. Abstract

L'augmentation du nombre de nouveaux animaux de compagnie (NAC) et la fréquente inadaptation des conditions de vie dans lesquels les propriétaires maintiennent ces animaux engendrent une augmentation des urgences vitales en cabinet vétérinaire. Fondé sur l'expérience pratique et didactique des auteurs, qui soignent exclusivement des NAC depuis de nombreuses années, cet ouvrage donne les clés d'une prise en charge complète et adaptée à chaque espèce. Après avoir rappelé le matériel nécessaire à la gestion de situations d'urgence chez ces animaux, une première partie fait le point sur les gestes techniques incontournables (contention, réchauffement, réhydratation, réanimation, injections, etc.) et les spécificités propres à chaque espèce, avec une distinction nette entre les mammifères, les oiseaux et les reptiles. Puis une seconde partie, scindée en quatre sections (petits mammifères herbivores, furet, oiseaux et reptiles) traite des situations cliniques les plus fréquemment rencontrées pour une espèce donnée suivant un plan systématique (définition et épidémiologie, terrain, signes d'appel, signes cliniques, diagnostics différentiels, pronostic, prise en charge). De nombreux encadrés rappellent les erreurs à ne pas commettre et délivrent conseils et astuces. Chaque situation se clôt sur les instructions à donner au propriétaire pour accompagner la guérison de son animal et éviter qu'une nouvelle situation d'urgence ne se reproduise. Des fiches posologiques des médicaments les plus utilisés chez les NAC et des tableaux de constantes en annexes complètent cet ouvrage. Destiné aussi bien au praticien confirmé qu'à l'étudiant vétérinaire, cet ouvrage de référence, richement illustré de photographies en situation et de radiographies, est un incontournable pour la formation initiale et la prise en charge quotidienne des urgences en cabinet vétérinaire.

Abstract

Endoparasites are infrequently reported in ferrets. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in pet ferrets in southern Italy. Fresh fecal samples were randomly collected from 50 ferrets housed in pet shops or privately owned. All fecal samples were processed using the FLOTAC pellet technique to identify and count helminthic eggs/larvae and protozoan cysts/oocysts. In addition, the samples were analyzed also by the Remel Xpect®Giardia/Cryptosporidium immunoassay. Intestinal parasites were detected in 15 out of 50 ferrets (30%). Eggs of ancylostomids were found in 28.0% (14/50) of the animals and oocysts of Sarcocystis were detected in one ferret (2.0%). None of the samples was positive for Cryptosporidium or Giardia. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of sarcosporidiosis in a pet ferret in Italy.

7. Efficacy of antibiotherapy for treating flatus incontinence associated with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth: A pilot randomized trial.

Abstract

An increase in intestinal gas production due to small intestinal bowel overgrowth (SIBO) is a contributing factor for flatus incontinence. The aims of our study were to assess the efficacy of metronidazole in a select population of patients with flatus incontinence associated with SIBO and to compare its efficacy with that of a combination of simethicone and activated charcoal (SC; Carbosylane) in randomized experimental arms.Adult patients suffering from flatus incontinence associated with SIBO diagnosed by a glucose breath test were enrolled in the study. They were given metronidazole or Carbosylane (SC) for 10 days. The reduction in the mean daily number of gas leakages reported in a 3-day diary before and at the end of the treatment was used as the primary endpoint.Of 52 consecutive subjects with flatus incontinence, 23 (44%) had SIBO, 16 (33%) of whom were included in and completed the study. The relative reduction in flatus incontinence episodes was significantly higher in the metronidazole than in the SC group (66.8±34.8% vs. 25±50%, P = 0.03), decreasing by more than 50% in 7 (87.5%) of the subjects in the metronidazole group compared with only 1 (12.5%) in the SC group (odds ratio 1.9, 95% confidence interval 0.9-56.9, P = 0.06).Our results show a promising trend indicating that metronidazole might significantly improve flatus incontinence associated with SIBO and might be more successful in treating flatus incontinence than gas absorbents.
