1. Pacing Strategy of 800 m and 1500 m Freestyle Swimming Finals in the World Championships According to the Performance in Males and Females of Different Age Groups

Abstract

Pacing strategy refers to the distribution of effort and speed throughout the race to achieve optimal performance. This study aims to understand whether the choice of pacing strategy in swimming depends on the length of competitions and how sex, age, and performance level influence this strategy. Participants were the finalists of the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle events at the elite and junior world championships in 2022–2023. Race outcomes and pacing parameters were compared between the two distances and across different groups of swimmers. Swimmers in both distances did not break world records. Pacing strategy generally followed a U-shape with significant differences in the frequency and duration of speed changes between the two distances. The 800 m exhibited more frequent changes in acceleration, while the 1500 m events generally followed a more consistent time-series pattern. There were differences in pacing strategies between males and females and between junior and elite swimmers. Swimmers closer to world records showed more consistent pacing patterns compared to those farther from records. This study suggests that pacing strategies are influenced by race distance, sex, age, and performance level. The research highlights the complex interplay between physiological and psychological factors that shape a swimmer’s decision-making during a race.

Abstract

A new group of marathon participants with minimal prior experience encounters the phenomenon known as “hitting the wall,” characterized by a notable decline in velocity accompanied by the heightened perception of fatigue (rate of perceived exertion, RPE). Previous research has suggested that successfully completing a marathon requires self-pacing according to RPE rather than attempting to maintain a constant speed or heart rate. However, it remains unclear how runners can self-pace their races based on the signals received from their physiological and mechanical running parameters. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the amount of information conveyed in a message or signal, RPE, and performance. It is hypothesized that a reduction in physiological or mechanical information (quantified by Shannon Entropy) affects performance. The entropy of heart rate, speed, and stride length was calculated for each kilometer of the race. The results showed that stride length had the highest entropy among the variables, and a reduction in its entropy to less than 50% of its maximum value (H = 3.3) was strongly associated with the distance (between 22 and 40) at which participants reported “hard exertion” (as indicated by an RPE of 15) and their performance (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that integrating stride length’s Entropy feedback into new cardioGPS watches could improve marathon runners’ performance.

Abstract

The study of pace strategy in different environments could help to understand its dependence on athletes’ energetic limits or on sport-specific factors. The aim of this study was to analyse the pacing strategy of finalists during seven swimming and running world events held in 2021–2022. The speed of 32 swimmers every 50 m in 1500 m freestyle competitions, and the speed of 55 runners every 100 m in 5000 m track competitions, were analysed. Differences between swimming and running were statistically significant for Total Time (p = 0.00, ES = 1.9), Average Time of splits (p = 0.00, ES = 2.0), Median Time of splits (p = 0.00, ES = 2.0), and Maximal length of split sequences (p = 0.00, ES = 1.3), and non-significantly different for number of Sequences of splits (p = 0.12, ES = 0.5), Percentage of total splits faster than the median speed (p = 0.08, ES = 0.2), Percentage of splits faster than the median speed in the first half (p = 0.16, ES = 0.4) and Percentage of splits faster than the median speed in the second half (p = 0.21, ES = 0.3). In conclusion, despite similar metabolic requirements of 1500 m swimming and 5000 m running, the influence of specific environment and sport type on the pacing strategy of world level competitions seems to be supported.

Abstract

Nowadays, organizations attempt to retrieve, collect, preserve and manage knowledge and experience of experts in order to reuse them later and to promote innovation. In this sense, Experience Management is one of the important organizational issues. This article is discussed the main ideas of a future Conversational Case-Based Reasoning (CCBR) intended to assist the experts of after-sales service in a French industrial company. The aim of this research is to formalize the experience of experts in after-sales service in order to better reuse them for similar problems in future. The research opts for an action research method which consists of two main parts: description of failure and proposition of decision protocol. The data were complemented by questionnaires, documentary analysis (including technical reports and other technical documents), observation and many interviews with experts. The findings include several aspects: the formalization of Problem-solving Cards, proposing the structure of case base, as well as the framework of proposed system. These formalizations permit after-sales service experts to provide effective diagnosis and problem-solving.

Abstract

The separation between residential and activity places is used to produce functionnal zoning such as " urban areas " or " employment areas ". Commuting and shopping trips reveal an increasing jobs, shops and services’ concentration in urban places and a large residential spreading around them. This study tries to replace interurban trips in different space categories (like urban or rural categories) by looking for the way differents grounds can be associated during a whole sequence. The main hypothesis is the existence of major trips generators (like working) relied to a number of secondary grounds (like shops or services).The main statistical source used is the Enquête Transports - Communications INRETS / INSEE 1993-1994 paired with datas from Population Census and Communal Inventory.

Abstract

The dentition is an extremely important organ in mammals with variation in timing and sequence of eruption, crown morphology, and tooth size enabling a range of behavioral, dietary, and functional adaptations across the class. Within this suite of variable mammalian dental phenotypes, relative sizes of teeth reflect variation in the underlying genetic and developmental mechanisms. Two ratios of postcanine tooth lengths capture the relative size of premolars to molars (premolar-molar module, PMM), and among the three molars (molar module component, MMC), and are known to be heritable, independent of body size, and to vary significantly across primates. Here, we explore how these dental traits vary across mammals more broadly, focusing on terrestrial taxa in the clade of Boreoeutheria (Euarchontoglires and Laurasiatheria). We measured the postcanine teeth of N = 1,523 boreoeutherian mammals spanning six orders, 14 families, 36 genera, and 49 species to test hypotheses about associations between dental proportions and phylogenetic relatedness, diet, and life history in mammals. Boreoeutherian postcanine dental proportions sampled in this study carry conserved phylogenetic signal and are not associated with variation in diet. The incorporation of paleontological data provides further evidence that dental proportions may be slower to change than is dietary specialization. These results have implications for our understanding of dental variation and dietary adaptation in mammals.

19. Lognormal Distribution of Cosmic Voids in Simulations and Mocks

Abstract

Following up on previous studies, we here complete a full analysis of the void size distributions of the Cosmic Void Catalog (CVC) based on three different simulation and mock catalogs; dark matter, haloes and galaxies. Based on this analysis, we attempt to answer two questions: Is a 3-parameter log-normal distribution a good candidate to satisfy the void size distributions obtained from different types of environments? Is there a direct relation between the shape parameters of the void size distribution and the environmental effects? In an attempt to answer these questions, we here find that all void size distributions of these data samples satisfy the 3-parameter log-normal distribution whether the environment is dominated by dark matter, haloes or galaxies. In addition, the shape parameters of the 3-parameter log-normal void size distribution seem highly affected by environment, particularly existing substructures. Therefore, we show two quantitative relations given by linear equations between the skewness and the maximum tree depth, and variance of the void size distribution and the maximum tree depth directly from the simulated data. In addition to this, we find that the percentage of the voids with nonzero central density in the data sets has a critical importance. If the number of voids with nonzero central densities reaches greater and or equal to 3.84 percentage in a simulation/mock sample, then a second population is observed in the void size distributions. Abstract

In this study, we obtain the size distribution of voids as a 3-parameter redshift independent log-normal void probability function (VPF) directly from the Cosmic Void Catalog (CVC). Although many statistical models of void distributions are based on the counts in randomly placed cells, the log-normal VPF that we here obtain is independent of the shape of the voids due to the parameter-free void finder of the CVC. We use three void populations drawn from the CVC generated by the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) Mocks which are tuned to three mock SDSS samples to investigate the void distribution statistically and the effects of the environments on the size distribution. As a result, it is shown that void size distributions obtained from the HOD Mock samples are satisfied by the 3-parameter log-normal distribution. In addition, we find that there may be a relation between hierarchical formation, skewness and kurtosis of the log-normal distribution for each catalog. We also show that the shape of the 3-parameter distribution from the samples is strikingly similar to the galaxy log-normal mass distribution obtained from numerical studies. This similarity of void size and galaxy mass distributions may possibly indicate evidence of nonlinear mechanisms affecting both voids and galaxies, such as large scale accretion and tidal effects. Considering in this study all voids are generated by galaxy mocks and show hierarchical structures in different levels, it may be possible that the same nonlinear mechanisms of mass distribution affect the void size distribution., Comment: Accepted in ApJ main journal, 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We give the Karhunen–Loève expansion of the covariance function of a family of discrete weighted Brownian bridges, appearing as discrete analogues of continuous Gaussian processes related to Cramér –von Mises and Anderson–Darling statistics. This analogy enables us to introduce a discrete Cramér–von Mises statistic and show that this statistic satisfies a property of local asymptotic Bahadur optimality for a statistical test involving the classical hypergeometric distributions. Our statistic and the goodness-of-fit problem we deal with are based on basic properties of Hahn polynomials and are, therefore, subject to some extension to all families of classical orthogonal polynomials, as well as their q-analogues. Due probably to computational difficulties, the family of discrete Cramér–von Mises statistics has received less attention than its continuous counterpart—the aim of this article is to bridge part of this gap. Abstract

The needs induced by the galloping demography and urbanization in the north-central part of Côte d'Ivoire have provoked strong anthropic pressures on the Bandama River, particularly its section located in the Haut-Bandama Wildlife reserve. This is reflected in the increased invasion of this watercourse by aquatic plants and algae, its enrichment in suspended matter and chemicals of all kinds. This state of the river could have repercussions on the development of biological organisms such as fish. Thus, the study aimed to determine the size structures and length-weight relationships ofBrycinus imberi, Labeo coubieandOreochromis niloticusfrom the Bandama River located in the Haut-Bandama wildlife Reserve. It was carried out along the longitudinal gradient (upstream-downstream) of the Bandama River, on 06 stations and during 08 sampling campaigns between January 2018 and February 2019. Fish specimens’ lengths measurements were made with an ichthyometer, and with an electronic scale, for the weights. The analysis focused on the size structure and length-weight relationships. Length-weight Relationship (LWR) was described by the equation: W = aLb.Brycinus imberispecimens’ sizes varied from 5.3 to 13.5 cm SL. AtLabeo coubie, the specimens have sizes that oscillate between 7.6 and 51.2 cm SL. As forOreochromis niloticus, the sizes were between 8.7 and 17 cm SL. Growth appeared allometric negative with b values of 2.70 forBrycinus imberi, 1.08 forLabeo coubie, and 2.51 forOreochromis niloticus.
