Studies of landscape dynamics in protected areas often rely exclusively on remotely-sensed data, leading to bias by neglecting how local inhabitants, who often have a long history of interaction with their environment, perceive and structure the landscape over time. Using a socio-ecological system (SES) approach in a forest-swamp-savannah mosaic within the Bas-Ogooué Ramsar site in Gabon, we assess how human populations participate in landscape dynamics over time. We first conducted a remote sensing analysis to produce a land-cover map representing the biophysical dimension of the SES. This map is based on pixel-oriented classifications, using a 2017 Sentinel-2 satellite image and 610 GPS points, that categorized the landscape in 11 ecological classes. To study the landscape’s social dimension, we collected data on local knowledge to understand how local people perceive and use the landscape. These data were collected through 19 semi-structured individual interviews, three focus groups and three months of participant observation during an immersive field mission. We developed a systemic approach by combining data on biophysical and social dimensions of the landscape. Our analysis shows that in the absence of continued anthropic interventions, both savannahs and swamps dominated by herbaceous vegetation will experience closure by encroaching woody vegetation, leading to eventual biodiversity loss. Our methodology based on an SES approach to landscapes could improve the conservation programs developed by Ramsar site managers. Designing actions at the local scale, rather than applying one set of actions to the entire protected area, allows the integration of human perceptions, practices and expectations, a challenge that is more than essential in the context of global change.

International audience; In Central Africa, the malaria vector Anopheles coluzzii is predominant in urban and coastal habitats. However, little is known about the environmental factors that may be involved in this process. Here, we performed an analysis of 28 physicochemical characteristics of 59 breeding sites across 5 urban and rural sites in coastal areas of Central Africa. We then modelled the relative frequency of An. coluzzii larvae to these physicochemical parameters in order to investigate environmental patterns. Then, we assessed the expression variation of 10 candidate genes in An. coluzzii , previously incriminated with insecticide resistance and osmoregulation in urban settings. Our results confirmed the ecological plasticity of An. coluzzii larvae to breed in a large range of aquatic conditions and its predominance in breeding sites rich in ions. Gene expression patterns were comparable between urban and rural habitats, suggesting a broad response to ions concentrations of whatever origin. Altogether, An. coluzzii exhibits a plastic response to occupy both coastal and urban habitats. This entails important consequences for malaria control in the context of the rapid urban expansion in Africa in the coming years.

The purpose of this article is to get an idea of ​​the evolution of the flows of the So’o basin in the relatively near future (2022-2060), but also in the distant future (2061-2100). In this perspective, the Cellular Automata (CA) -Markov was used to predict the evolution of the future land use of the basin, and the outputs of three regional climate models/RCMs (RCA4, RACMO22T and CCCma) were used to predict future climate change. Distribution mapping was retained as a method of correcting the precipitation and temperature biases of the outputs of the climate models used. The SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model was used to simulate the future flows of the So’o. The results obtained show that a change in precipitation in accordance with the forecasts of the CCCma and RACMO22T models will be the cause of a decrease in the runoff, except under the RCP8.5 scenario during the second period (2061-2100), where we will note an increase compared to the historical period of approximately + 4%. This decrease will mainly affect the months of autumn, and the decades 2020, 2040 and 2070 will be the most affected. Concerning the RCA4 model, the results obtained show that a change in precipitation following its forecasts will cause an increase in runoff of more than 50%, regardless of the period and the scenario taken into account. In general, this increase will be greatest during the dry seasons (winter and summer), and the decades at the end of the century (2080s to 2100s) will be the wettest. An increase in discharges was noted in certain cases despite a decrease in rainfall, in particular in the case of flows simulated for the first period (2022-2060) from the outputs of the CCCma model. This seems to be a consequence of the increase in impervious areas, insofar as the runoff also increases during this period according to the model. The results of this study could be used to strengthen the management of future water resources in the basin and the entire region.Keywords: So’o, RCMs, Climate Change, Anthropization, SWAT

The objective of this study is to understand the impact of rainfall variability and anthropization on the flows of the Mefou watershed over a recent period. For this, the hydropluviometric data of the catchment concerned were analyzed using the Pettitt test. Likewise, the dynamics of the main land-use patterns have been assessed, using supervised classifications carried out from the processing of Landsat satellite images of the basin studied at two dates. The results of this study show that the average and extreme flows of this basin have been increased since 1985-86, unlike the rainfall, which generally decreases for all seasons from the 1970s, apart from the summer, where the reverse is observed. Land-use changes (increase in impervious areas and a decrease in forest and water bodies) seem to be the main cause of the observed increase in runoff. The rainfall changes observed in this basin have just contributed to amplifying this increase in runoff in some cases and attenuating it in others. The summer and the spring for which the rainfall recorded respectively an increasing break and no break are also the seasons for which the increases in runoff are the most important. Conversely, autumn and winter, which saw significant decreases in rainfall, experienced the smallest increases. These results could be useful for long-term planning of water demand and use in this basin, as well as for improving future simulations of main collector flow and preventing socio-environmental disasters like flooding.Keywords: Mefou, variability, precipitation, runoff, land use patterns

A major flood event occurred on 21 August 2020 in the densely populated Makèpè Missokè neighborhood in the city of Douala (Cameroon, Africa). Nearly 2210 buildings and 12,376 victims spread over 82 hectares were affected. A 2D HEC-RAS model is applied to simulate and characterize this event. A cross analysis of flood depth and flow velocity is used to classify the flood risk and identify areas exposed from low to high hazard. The simulations provide detailed information on the flood characteristics (extent, depth, velocity, arrival time, and duration). The simulated maximum water surface profiles are consistent with the floods marks with differences ranging from 0.02 m to 0.44 m, indicating a good agreement between the observed and simulated water levels at the peak flow (NSE = 0.94, Erel = 0.92, RMSE = 0.21 m). The maximum inundation level is 4.48 m and the flow velocity is globally low at less than 1 m/s. The average flood arrival time and duration are 5 h and 26 h, respectively, for a threshold height of 0.5 m. These results indicate a fast mobilization of the major river channel for the evacuation of this flood. The level of accuracy of the developed model of the 21 August 2020 flood event is appropriate for flood hazard assessment in the city of Douala and is designed to find operational application in future events.

International audience; Simultaneously acquiring time series of climate, hydrology and hydrochemical data over decades on river systems is pivotal to understand the complex interactions involving rock, soil water, air and biota in the Critical Zone, to build integrated modelling and to propose predictive scenarios. Among the Critical Zone Observatories (CZOs) implemented in the past 25 years, only a few are located in the humid Tropics despite the importance of these regions in terms of population density, fast-changing land use, biodiversity hotspots, biomass stock on continents, size of river systems, etc. Since 1994, weathering and erosion processes and fluxes have been investigated at both local (experimental watershed) and regional scales in the Nyong River Basin (Cameroon) which belongs to the Critical Zone Observatories network named Multiscale TROPIcal CatchmentS (M-TROPICS). The data shared by M-TROPICS in Cameroon are: (1) rainfall; (2) air temperature, air relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and global radiation; (3) stream and river water level; (4) pH, electrical conductivity, water temperature and suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration; (5) major ion, alkalinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. The dataset already contributed to describe the water partitioning in these tropical humid watersheds, to better understand the factors controlling chemical weathering and physical erosion in tropical ecosystems, particularly the role of organic matter. The dataset also contributed to calculate elemental weathering fluxes and saprolite production rate and to propose denudation rates on tropical cratonic landscapes. Hydrological modelling allowed quantification of the geographical water sources contributing to streamflow. DOC data were used to determine greenhouse-gas emissions and carbon budgets from African inland waters. However, long-term solute concentrations at the outlet of a small tributary of the Nyong River exhibit non-stationary behaviour over the last 26 years. The processes governing those fluctuations are not yet fully understood and might be related to changes in the hydrological regime, land-cover and land-use. The latter highlights the need for longer time-series and continued support for CZOs particularly in the humid tropics.

We characterized the spatio-temporal dynamics of carbon (C) in rivers of the tropical Nyong catchment (South Cameroon). In 2016, we measured fortnightly at 6 locations along an upstream-downstream gradient from groundwater to the main stream of order 6, total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic C (DIC) used together with pH to compute pCO2, dissolved and particulate organic C (DOC and POC) and total suspended matter. Forest, groundwater had low DOC content (< 1 mg L−1) as its leaching was probably prevented in the overlaying lateritic soils. Forest groundwater was supersaturated in CO2 (~50 times the atmospheric value) because of the solubilisation of the CO2 originating from soil respiration. Wetlands water exhibited higher DOC (> 14 mg L−1) and similar DIC concentrations than the forest groundwater. Surface runoff was considered negligible in the basin due to low slopes and high infiltration capacity of the soils, making wetlands and forest groundwater the two main sources of C for surface waters. The influence of wetlands on C dynamics in rivers was significant during periods of high waters when the hydrological connectivity between surface waters and wetlands was enhanced. On annual scale, wetlands exported 60 % (15.4 ± 7.2 t C km−2 yr−1) of the total amount of C transferred laterally to surface waters, the remaining 40 % (12.1 ± 5.8 t C km−2 yr−1) being transferred from forest groundwater. Heterotrophic respiration in rivers averaged 89 mmol m−2 d−1 whereas CO2 degassing was 1260 mmol m−2 d−1, which shows that it is unlikely that the river heterotrophic respiration was the main process sustaining CO2 emission. The comparison of the hydrological export of terrestrial C via forest groundwater with the net terrestrial C sink in the Nyong watershed shows that only ~4 % of the net terrestrial C sink reach the aquatic ecosystem. The carbon mass balance of the Nyong watershed highlights that attributing to a unique terrestrial source the whole amount of riverine carbon emitted to the atmosphere and exported to the ocean and ignoring the river–wetland connectivity can lead to the misrepresentation of C dynamics in tropical watersheds.

Despite the absence of tectonic activity, cratonic environments are characterized by strongly variable, and in places significant, rock weathering rates. This is shown here through an exploration of the weathering rates in two inter-tropical river basins from the Atlantic Central Africa: the Ogooué and Mbei River basins, Gabon. We analyzed the elemental and strontium isotope composition of 24 water samples collected throughout these basins. Based on the determination of the major element sources we estimate that the Ogooué and Mbei rivers total dissolved solids (TDS) mainly derive from silicate chemical weathering. The chemical composition of the dissolved load and the area-normalized solute fluxes at the outlet of the Ogooué are similar to those of other West African rivers (e.g., Niger, Nyong, or Congo). However, chemical weathering rates (TZsil+ rate expressed as the release rate of the sum of cations by silicate chemical weathering) span the entire range of chemical weathering intensities hitherto recorded in worldwide cratonic environments. In the Ogooué-Mbei systems, three regions can be distinguished: (i) the Eastern sub-basins draining the Plateaux Batéké underlain by quartz-rich sandstones exhibit the lowest TZsil+ rates, (ii) the Northern sub-basins and the Mbei sub-basins, which drain the southern edge of the tectonically quiescent South Cameroon Plateau, show intermediate TZsil+ rates and (iii) the Southern sub-basins characterized by steeper slopes record the highest TZsil+ rates. In region (ii), higher DOC concentrations are associated with enrichment of elements expected to form insoluble hydrolysates in natural waters (e.g., Fe, Al, Th, REEs) suggesting enhanced transport of these elements in the colloidal phase. In region (iii), we suggest that a combination of mantle-induced dynamic uplift and lithospheric destabilization affecting the rim of the Congo Cuvette induces slow base level lowering thereby enhancing soil erosion, exhumation of fresh primary minerals, and thus weathering rates. The study points out that erosion of lateritic covers in cratonic areas can significantly enhance chemical weathering rates by bringing fresh minerals in contact with meteoric water. The heterogeneity of weathering rates amongst cratonic regions thus need to be considered for reconstructing the global, long-term carbon cycle and its control on Earth climate.

International audience; Hydrological models are important tools for the simulation of water storage and hydrological fluxes in large basins and complex river systems. The hydrological models can compensate the lack of observed data in ungauged basins. In this study, the hydrological model of large basins MGB (for Model of Large Basins in Portuguese) is used to evaluate the hydrological processes of the Ogooué River Basin (ORB), which has been mostly unmonitored for about three decades. Simulations were carried out over an 18-year period from 1998 to 2015 using TRMM 3B42 daily rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) as forcing and in situ and altimetry-based river discharges from Envisat, Saral Altika and Jason-2 for calibration and validation. The results of the model were in good agreement with the flows measured at stations upstream and downstream of the Ogooué basin (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) > 0.56 for all calibration gauges). The MGB model efficiently describes the seasonal and interannual variations of the flow in the Ogooué River and its major tributaries which were found to be highly correlated to the rainfall (r ranging from 0.72 to 0.90 and 0.56 to 0.87 at seasonal and interannual time-scales respectively). Interannual variations of precipitation and river discharge of the ORB are linked to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean and southeastern tropical Atlantic Niño. Also, the Ogooué River discharge was found to be strongly correlated with Sea Surface Temperature (SST) at annual and semi-annual time-scales.

Despite the importance of tropical ecosystems for climate regulation, biodiversity, water and nutrient cycles, only a few Critical Zone Observatories (CZOs) are located in the tropics. Among these, most are in humid climates, while very few data exist for semi-arid and sub-humid climates, due to the difficulty of estimating hydro-geochemical balances in catchments with ephemeral streams. We contribute to fill this gap by presenting a meteorological and hydro-geochemical dataset acquired at the Mule Hole catchment (4.1 km2), a pristine dry deciduous forest located in a biosphere reserve in south India. The dataset consists of time series of variables related to (i) meteorology, including rainfall, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and global radiation, (ii) hydrology, including water level and discharge at the catchment outlet, (iii) hydrogeology, including manual (monthly) and/or automated (from 15 min to hourly) groundwater levels in nine piezometers and (iv) geochemistry, including suspended sediment content in the stream and chemical composition of rainfall (event based), groundwater (monthly sampling) and stream water (storm events, 15 min to hourly frequency with an automatic sampler). The time series extend from 2003 to 2019. Measurement errors are minimized by frequent calibration of sensors and quality checks, both in the field and in the laboratory. Despite these precautions, several data gaps exist, due to occasional access restriction to the site and instrument destruction by wildlife. Results show that large seasonal and interannual variations of climatic conditions were reflected in the large variations of stream flow and groundwater recharge, as well as in water chemical composition. Notably, they reveal a long-term evolution of groundwater storage, suggesting hydrogeological cycles on a decadal scale. This dataset, alone or in combination with other data, has already allowed to better understand water and element cycling in tropical dry forests, and the role of forest diversity on biogeochemical cycles. As tropical ecosystems are underrepresented by Critical Zone Observatories, we expect this data note to be valuable for the global scientific community. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

International audience; Stream carbon fluxes are one of the major components in the global C cycle, yet the discrimination of the various sources of stream carbon remains to a large extent unclear and less is known about the biogeochemical transformations that accompany the transfer of C from soils to streams. Here, we used patterns in stream water and groundwater δ 13 C values in a small forested tropical headwater catchment to investigate the source and contribution from the soil carbon pools to stream organic and inorganic carbon behavior over seasonal scales. Stream organic carbon (DOC and POC) comes mainly from the upper rich soil organic carbon horizons and derived from total organic carbon (TOC) of biogenic source. The isotopic compositions δ 13 C TOC , δ 13 C DOC and δ 13 C POC of these carbon species were very close (− 30‰ to − 26‰) and typical of the forested C3 vegetation. The relationship observed between DOC and log pCO 2 and δ 13 C DIC indicated that besides the considerable CO 2 evasion that occurs as DIC is transported from soils to streams, there were also other processes affecting the stream DIC pool. In-stream mineralization of DOC and mixing of atmospheric carbon had a significant influence on the δ 13 C DIC values. These processes which varied seasonally with hydrological changes represent the main control on DOC and DIC cycling in the wet tropical milieu. The rapid turnover of carbon on hillside soils, the transformation of TOC to DOC in wetland soils and further mineralization of stream DOC to DIC favor the evasion of C, making the zone a source of carbon to the atmosphere. At the global scale and on geological time scales, mechanical erosion and chemical weathering budgets are linked. Together, these processes contribute to the formation and the degradation of the Earth’s critical zone and to the biogeochemical cycles of elements. While the weathering of hot and humid shields areas exhibit low weathering rates because of the depth of the mature depleted soil mantle there, shields areas dominate the continents areas over intertropical regions and, therefore, represent a significant proportion of the global delivery of dissolved matter to the oceans. In addition, these environments are under supply-limited conditions (the weathering rate is limited by the low rates of the erosion) and thus particularly sensitive to long-term variability erosion rates. Despite this importance, weathering-erosion budgets and rates estimation in these environments is sparse, and generally performed at a local scale (soil profiles) or, when performed at a larger catchment scale, the intra cratonic characteristics variabilities (e. g. the diversity of mechanical erosional regimes) are usually not singled out.In the present study, we explored the variability of the weathering intensity of the Ogooué sub-basins (Western central Africa, Gabon) as a function of their geomorphologic, tectonic and lithological setting variability. We analyzed major and trace elements concentration and the strontium and neodymium isotopes of water, suspended matter sediments and bedload sampled in 24 Ogooué tributaries (September 2017 campaign). Our results show that shield areas exhibit a high variability of chemical weathering intensity, which follows the erosional regime characteristics of the studied sub-basins, likely related to their tectonic activity. Three regions can be distinguished: The Bateke plateau (East sub-basins - PB), is composed of pure sandstones (quartz) and is inert in term of tectonic activity and therefore in term of erosion and weathering budget; the northern sub-basins (NB) are subjected to low tectonic activity and exhibit slightly higher erosion and weathering intensity than PB region and, by comparison, southern sub-basins (SB) exhibits uplift activity which is traduced by more intensive erosion and weathering processes.The annual dissolved solid budget of the Ogooué basin is ~2.52 t.yr-1 for a rate of 11.7 t.km-2.yr-1. According to the source discrimination method performed based on the geochemical analysis, the atmospheric inputs contributes to around 20% to the TDS, the silicate weathering contribution dominates the dissolved exports throughout 70% of its production while the carbonates weathering lowly contributes to the TDS production.By comparison to the other large shields rivers, this basin exhibit a lower range of chemical silicate weathering rate than most of the world’s large rivers, with values similar to those of the Congo River. This new dataset provides a key information to complete the World River chemistry database, which is limited for inter-tropical regions, especially in tectonically quiescent environments. Moreover, this study provides new data for tropical shields contexts allowing for the exploration of the interactions between erosion rates and climate in the control of continental weathering rates, and their relationships with long-term carbon cycle and short-term biogeochemical cycles.

International audience; Purpose: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a ciliopathy with a wide spectrum of symptoms due to primary cilia dysfunction, including genitourinary developmental anomalies as well as impaired reproduction, particularly in males. Primary cilia are known to be required at the following steps of reproduction function: (i) genitourinary organogenesis, (ii) in fetal firing of hypothalamo-pituitary axe, (iii) sperm flagellum structure, and (iv) first zygotic mitosis conducted by proximal sperm centriole. BBS phenotype is not fully understood.Methods: This study explored all steps of reproduction in 11 French male patients with identified BBS mutations.Results: BBS patients frequently presented with genitourinary malformations, such as cryptorchidism (5/11), short scrotum (5/8), and micropenis (5/8), but unexpectedly, with normal testis size (7/8). Ultrasonography highlighted epididymal cysts or agenesis of one seminal vesicle in some cases. Sexual hormones levels were normal in all patients except one. Sperm numeration was normal in 8 out of the 10 obtained samples. Five to 45% of sperm presented a progressive motility. Electron microscopy analysis of spermatozoa did not reveal any homogeneous abnormality. Moreover, a psychological approach pointed to a decreased self-confidence linked to blindness and obesity explaining why so few BBS patients express a child wish.Conclusions: Primary cilia dysfunction in BBS impacts the embryology of the male genital tract, especially epididymis, penis, and scrotum through an insufficient fetal androgen production. However, in adults, sperm structure does not seem to be impacted. These results should be confirmed in a greater BBS patient cohort, focusing on fertility.

Climate change, variability and anthropogenic forcings such as land use change are the main forcings of river discharge variability. However, an understanding of their simultaneous impacts on river discharge remains limited in some parts of the world. To shed light on this issue, the objective of this article is to investigate the effects of rainfall variability and land use change on river discharge in the Nyong basin (at Olama and Mbalmayo gauging stations) and some of its sub-basins (So’o and Mefou) over the long period 1950–2018. To achieve this goal, hydro-meteorological data of the Nyong basin and sub-basins were analyzed using the Pettitt test. Likewise, land use changes in the basin and sub-basins were also analyzed using supervised classifications of Landsat satellite images of the basins at different periods (1973, 2000 and 2018). On the annual scale, rainfall has decreased statistically over the studied basins. In the large basins (Olama and Mbalmayo), this decrease in rainfall is synchronous with that of discharges, while it is concomitant with an increase in the Mefou (small basin). After the ruptures within time series identified in the annual modules, the extreme discharges (maximum and minimum) decreased in Olama; in Mbalmayo, the maximum discharges remained stable while the minimum discharges decreased. On the other hand, the maximum and minimum discharges have significantly increased in the Mefou. The stability of maximum discharges at Mbalmayo and the increase in extremes on the Mefou in a context where the precipitation that generates the discharge has decreased can be attributed to land use change. These changes are essentially marked by an increase in impervious areas and a reduction in forest cover. On the seasonal scale, the impact of precipitation in the dry season is visible on the flows of the rainy seasons that follow them on the large basins (Olama and Mbalmayo). Between the decades 1970–1990 and 2000–2010, there was respectively a significant increase, then a decrease in summer precipitation, which impacted the autumn discharges in the same direction. Conversely, between the same intervals, there was a significant decrease, then a slight increase in winter precipitation. The impact of winter precipitation on the spring discharge is more visible during the first period only (1970–1990). During the second period, winter precipitation seems to have more of an impact on the runoff for the same season. In the Mefou sub-basin, the precipitation plays an essentially amplifying role in the increase in discharge in the seasons during which they occur. Those having experienced an increase, or a maintenance of precipitation (summer and spring) recorded the most significant increases in discharges. These results could be useful for long-term planning on the demand and use of water, as well as flood management in the basins

The source and proportion of REY, Th and U exported by groundwater and by the ephemeral stream along with the elemental proportions passing through vegetation have been assessed in the sub-humid tropical forested CZO of Mule Hole, Southern India. The study relies on a pluri-annual hydro-geochemical monitoring combined with a hydrological model. The significant difference between the soil input (SI) and output (SO) solute fluxes (mmol/km2/yr) of LREE (SI-SO = 13250-1500), HREE (1930-235), Th (64-12) and U (63-25) indicates a strong uptake by roots carried by canopy and forest floor processes. The contribution of atmospheric dust leaching can reach about 60% of LREE and 80% of HREE. At the watershed scale, the U solute flux exported by groundwater (180 mmol/km2/yr) mainly originates from the breakdown of primary U-bearing accessory minerals and dominates by a factor of 25 the stream flux. The precipitation of authigenic U bearing phases and adsorption onto Fe-oxides and oxyhydroxides plays a significant role for limiting the U mobility. In the groundwater, the plagioclase chemical weathering is efficiently traced by the positive Eu-anomaly. The very low (REY) to nil (Th) contents are explained by the precipitation of authigenic phases. In the stream flow, dominated by the overland flow (87% of the yearly stream flow), the solute exports (in mmol/km2/yr) of REY (1080 for LREE and 160 for HREE) and of Th (14) dominate those by groundwater. Their mobility is enhanced by chelation with organic ligands produced by forest floor and canopy processes.

Inter-tropical regions are nowadays faced to major land-use changes in data-sparse context leading to difficulties to assess hydrological signatures and their evolution. This work is part of the theme Panta Rhei of the IAHS, and aims to develop a combined approach of data acquisition and a new semi-distributed model taking into account land-use changes to reconstruct and predict annual runoff on an urban catchment. Applications were conducted on the Mefou catchment at Nsimalen (421 km2; Yaoundé, Cameroon) under rapid increase in urbanization since 1960. The data acquisition step combines an historical data processing and a short-term spatially-dense dedicated instrumentation (2017–2018), leading to 12 donor catchments, 6 from historical studies and 6 from the instrumentation presenting various topographic, soil and land-use characteristics. We developed an annual rainfall-runoff model based on mathematical relationships similar to the SCS model. The model needs the definition of a hydrological index I which is time variable and enables to take into account land-use changes and non-stationary relationships between rainfall and runoff. The index I is an empirical indicator defined as a combination of several components such as topography, soil, and land-use. The rules for the construction of I are obtained from data analysis on donor catchments. Then, the model was calibrated on donor catchments. Finally, two applications were conducted on eight target catchments composing the Mefou in order: (i) to study the spatial hydrological functioning and calculate the water balance during the short instrumentation period; (ii) to reconstruct the hydrograph at the Mefou and to simulate the impact of future scenarios of land-use and urbanization. Results show that that the Mfoundi catchment, integrating the three more urbanized sub-catchments, contributes near to 40 % of the Mefou despite covering only 23 % of the basin. The most urbanized sub-catchments present annual runoff coefficient about 0.86 against 0.24 for the most natural sub-catchments. The second result is the reconstruction of historical annual runoff from 1930–2017 with r2 = 0.68, RMSE = 99 mm and a mean absolute normalized error Ē = 14.5 % over the 29 observed years. The reconstruction of the annual runoff at Nsimalen confirms the moderate impact of urbanization on annual runoff before 1980. However, a decrease of about 50 % of the forest cover and an increase from 10 % to 35 % of the urban area between 1980 and 2017 are associated with an increase of 53 % of annual runoff coefficient for the Mefou at Nsimalen (0.44 against 0.29). Application for a fictive plausible scenario of urbanization in 2030 leads to an increase of more than 85 % of the annual runoff in comparison of the values observed in 1980. The coupled experimental-modelling approach proposed herein opens promising perspectives regarding the evaluation of the annual runoff in catchments under changes.

International audience; Secondary minerals in soils can record climatic changes affecting continental surfaces over geological times. Their dating should refine our present knowledge about their potential periods of formation as well as their relations with the ongoing change of climate and erosion/weathering regimes. In the present study, twenty kaolinite samples from two lateritic profiles of the Karnataka plateau, an intensively studied area in the southern India, have been dated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Kaolinite ages vary between 0.229±0.24 Ma to 40.73±15.37 Ma. Four different groups of age can be identified with ages clustered around 1.0, 3.5, 9.0 and 39.0 Ma. These groups of age indicate local preferential weathering periods that coincide with distinct Indian climatic events described in independent studies, such as monsoon strengthening. Thus, regional or subcontinental factors likely prevailed over global forcing in the imprint of climatic events in the regolith profiles. These results confirm that despite their simple mineralogy, laterites can contain several relictual and coexisting generations of secondary minerals and that EPR dating of kaolinite contributes to unraveling the complex history of continental surfaces over geological periods.

South Cameroon is located in a tropical and tectonically quiescent region, with landscapes characterized by thick highly weathered regolith, indicative of the long-term predominance of chemical weathering over erosion. Currently this region undergoes huge changes due to accelerated mutations related to a growing population and economical developments with associated needs and increasing pressures on land and natural resources. We analysed two of the main south Cameroon rivers: the Nyong River and Sanaga River. The Sanaga catchment undergoes a contrasted tropical climate from sub-humid mountainous and humid climate and is impacted by deforestation, agriculture, damming, mining and urbanization, especially in the Mbam sub-basin, draining the highly populated volcanic highlands. By contrast, the Nyong catchment, only under humid tropical climate, is preserved from anthropogenic disturbance with low population except in the region of Yaounde (Mefou sub-basin). Moreover the Nyong basin is dam-free and less impacted by agriculture and logging. We explore both denudation temporal variability and the ratio between chemical and physical denudation through two catchment-averaged erosion and denudation datasets. The first one consists of an 11-year long gauging dataset, while the second one comes from cosmogenic radionuclides CRNs, here beryllium-10 (Be-10)] from sand sampled in the river mainstreams (timescale of tens to hundreds of thousands of years). Modern fluxes estimated from gauging data range from 5 to 100m/Ma (10 to 200t/km(2)/yr); our calculations indicate that the usual relative contribution of chemical versus physical denudation is 60% and 40%, respectively, of the total denudation. Beryllium-10 denudation rates and sediment fluxes range from 4.8 to 40.3m/Ma or 13 to 109t/km(2)/yr, respectively, after correction for quartz enrichment. These fluxes are slightly less than the modern fluxes observed in Cameroon and other stable tropical areas. The highest Be-10-derived fluxes and the highest physical versus chemical denudation ratios are attributed to anthropogenic impact. Copyright (c) 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Total suspended sediment (TSS) data for 1960–1970 and from recent investigations (1990–2000) are used to evaluate the variability in sediment yield of the Sanaga catchment (Cameroon) and the equivalent rates of erosion. At the annual and seasonal time scales, total suspended sediment concentrations for the Mbam sub-catchment are three to four times higher than for the Sanaga basin, reflecting the higher sensitivity of the former to erosion. Classical clockwise hysteresis loops are observed in both sub-catchments, despite a significant increase in human-induced catchment changes. At the multi-year time frame (over a 40-year period), it appears that the second half of the 1990s is marked by a downward trend in TSS. This shift is due to the control infrastructures (river impoundments and ponds) installed in certain parts of the whole catchment, combined with a drop in annual rainfall and river discharge.Editor Z.W. Assessing the dynamics of the silica cycle in the critical zone remains challenging, particularly within the soil, where multiple processes are involved. To improve our understanding of this cycle in the Tropics, and more specifically the role played by vegetation, we combined elemental Si mass balance with the delta Si-30 signatures of the compartments involved in the waterplant-rock interactions of a tropical forested watershed, Mule Hole (Southern India). To accomplish this, we analysed (1) the d30Si values of present-day litter phytoliths from tree leaves and grass, as well as soil amorphous silica (ASi); (2) the Si isotope fractionation induced by phytolith dissolution; (3) the silicon mass balance inferred from isotopes at the soil-plant scale; and (4) the consistency between water sources and the delta Si-30 signatures in the ephemeral stream. The delta Si-30 values of present-day litter phytoliths and soil ASi vary within a narrow range of 1.10-1.40 parts per thousand for all samples, but two deep vertisol samples which likely trapped phytoliths from different vegetation growing under more humid conditions, as indicated by pollen analysis. A homogeneous signature of litter is a minimum condition for using delta Si-30 as a proxy for the litter/phytolith source of Si. However, litter-ash dissolution experiments demonstrate that the incipient dissolution of phytoliths fractionates Si isotopes, with the preferential dissolution of 28 Si over 30 Si yielding delta Si-30 values as low as -1.41 parts per thousand. Values close to the whole-sample signatures, i.e., above 1 parts per thousand, were recovered in the solution after a few hours of water-ash interaction. At the soil-plant scale, the average delta Si-30 value of soil-infiltrating solutions is slightly lighter than the average phytolith signature, which suggests phytoliths as the source of soil dissolved Si. The isotopic budget of dissolved Si within the soil layer, which was obtained based on previous elemental fluxes, is imbalanced. Equilibrating the isotopic budget would imply that up to 4100 mol ha(-1) yr(-1) of silica is taken up by vegetation, which is almost twice as large as that initially estimated from the elemental budget. The additional Si flux taken up, and likely stored in woody stems, was estimated assuming that Si isotopes followed a steady-state model for the whole Si plant uptake and then followed a Rayleigh model once in the plants. The delta Si-30 value of the additional Si flux taken up should be close to 0 parts per thousand, i.e., enriched in light Si isotopes compared to the litter. If steady-state conditions apply, the source could correspond to soil ASi dissolution or deep (saprolite) root uptake. At the outlet of the watershed, the stream exhibits low delta Si-30 values (0.28-0.71 parts per thousand) during peak flows and high delta Si-30 values (1.29-1.61 parts per thousand) during the recessions at the end of the rainy season. Heavy delta Si-30 signatures are consistent with the expected domination of seepage at the end of floods. The light delta Si-30 values during peak flow are slightly lower than the overland flow signature and reflect either a sampling bias of overland flow or a minor but significant contribution of another Si source within the stream, possibly the partial dissolution of phytoliths from the suspended load, with slight isotopic fractionation. This study confirms that vegetation controls the silicon cycle in this dry tropical forest. It also shows that silicon isotopes yield a better grasp of the mass balance and sources and potential mechanisms involved than the consideration of only silicon concentrations. The study relies on the characterization of the solid compartments (bedrock, soils, streambed and suspended sediments), on batch leaching experiments of the parent gneiss and on extractions of cation-exchangeable and iron-related pools of selected soil samples. The REY-Th-U primary reservoir is controlled by monazite, xenotime, thorite, allanite, bastnesite, titanite, apatite, and, to a lesser extent, by zircon. This accessory mineral assemblage was profoundly modified by episodes of metamorphism and hydrothermal activity. Allanite, bastnesite, titanite, and apatite are prone to break down at incipient weathering stage while monazite, xenotime and zircon are resistant minerals. On a long-term basis, REY are roughly inert in the immature saprolite and depleted in the soil cover and are strongly redistributed among secondary phases. LREE and HREY are mainly controlled by poorly crystallized secondary iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, and, to a lesser extent, by secondary phosphates (e.g., rhabdophane). Th, inert in the saprolite, is controlled by well-crystallized secondary iron oxides and oxyhydroxides and likely by secondary thorianite (ThO 2). REY and Th are not easily mobilized during surface processes such as chelation by organic matter and uptake by plants. REY and Th are, by far, exported as suspended sediments associated with iron oxides. The U export by groundwater and suspended sediments dominates over those of streambed sediments and stream.

Radar altimetry, initially developed to observe the surface topography of the ocean, is now commonly used for the monitoring of inland water bodies. In this study, an altimetry-based gauging network was built in the Ogooue River Basin (ORB), in Gabon, Central Africa. It is composed of altimetry-based virtual stations (VS) under the altimetry tracks of ERS-2/ENVISAT/ SARAL, Cryosat-2, Sentinel-3A and Jason-2/Jason-3. River discharge was estimated from 1995 to 2017 combining water level records from several virtual stations close to Lambarene gauge station and the rating curve from this station. Very good agreement was found in terms of R (>0.95), RMSE and annual discharge.

(IF 2.91; Q1); International audience; Urban agriculture is crucial to local populations, but the risk of it contaminating water has rarely been documented. The aim of this study was to assess pesticide contamination of surface waters from the Méfou watershed (Yaoundé, Cameroon) by 32 selected herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides (mainly polar) according to their local application, using both grab sampling and polar organic compounds integrative samplers (POCIS). Three sampling campaigns were conducted in the March/April and October/November 2015 and June/July 2016 rainy seasons in urban and peri-urban areas. The majority of the targeted compounds were detected. The quantification frequencies of eight pesticides were more than 20% with both POCIS and grab sampling, and that of diuron and atrazine reached 100%. Spatial differences in contamination were evidenced with higher contamination in urban than peri-urban rivers. In particular, diuron was identified as an urban contaminant of concern because its concentrations frequently exceeded the European water quality guideline of 0.200 μg/L in freshwater and may thus represent an ecological risk due to a risk quotient > 1 for algae observed in 94% of grab samples. This study raises concerns about the impacts of urban agriculture on the quality of water resources and to a larger extent on the health of the inhabitants of cities in developing countries.

River water composition (major ion and Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio) was monitored on a monthly basis over a period of three years from a mountainous river (Nethravati River) of southwestern India. The total dissolved solid (TDS) concentration is relatively low (46 mg L-1) with silica being the dominant contributor. The basin is characterised by lower dissolved Sr concentration (avg. 150 nmol L-1), with radiogenic Sr-87/Sr-86 isotopic ratios (avg. 0.72041 at outlet). The composition of Sr and Sr-87/Sr-86 and their correlation with silicate derived cations in the river basin reveal that their dominant source is from the radiogenic silicate rock minerals. Their composition in the stream is controlled by a combination of physical and chemical weathering occurring in the basin. The molar ratio of SiO2/Ca and Sr-87/Sr-86 isotopic ratio show strong seasonal variation in the river water, i.e., low SiO2/Ca ratio with radiogenic isotopes during non-monsoon and higher SiO2/Ca with less radiogenic isotopes during monsoon season. Whereas, the seasonal variation of Rb/Sr ratio in the stream water is not significant suggesting that change in the mineral phase being involved in the weathering reaction could be unlikely for the observed molar SiO2/Ca and Sr-87/Sr-86 isotope variation in river water. Therefore, the shift in the stream water chemical composition could be attributed to contribution of ground water which is in contact with the bedrock (weathering front) during non-monsoon and weathering of secondary soil minerals in the regolith layer during monsoon. Agriculture has been increasingly relying on groundwater irrigation for the last decades, leading to severe groundwater depletion and/or nitrate contamination. Understanding the links between nitrate concentration and groundwater resource is a prerequisite for assessing the sustainability of irrigated systems. The Berambadi catchment (ORE-BVET/Kabini Critical Zone Observatory) in Southern India is a typical example of intensive irrigated agriculture and then an ideal site to study the relative influences of land use, management practices and aquifer properties on NO3 spatial distribution in groundwater. The monitoring of >200 tube wells revealed nitrate concentrations from I to 360 mg/L. Three configurations of groundwater level and elevation gradient were identified: i) NO3 hot spots associated to deep groundwater levels (30-60.m) and low groundwater elevation gradient suggest small groundwater reserve with absence of lateral flow, then degradation of groundwater quality due to recycling through pumping and return flow; ii) high groundwater elevation gradient, moderate NO3 concentrations suggest that significant lateral flow prevented NO3 enrichment; iii) low NO3 concentrations, low groundwater elevation gradient and shallow groundwater indicate a large reserve. We propose that mapping groundwater level and gradient could be used to delineate zones vulnerable to agriculture intensification in catchments where groundwater from low-yielding aquifers is the only source of irrigation. Then, wells located in low groundwater elevation gradient zones are likely to be suitable for assessing the impacts of local agricultural systems, while wells located in zones with high elevation gradient would reflect the average groundwater quality of the catchment, and hence should be used for regional mapping of groundwater quality. Irrigatiori with NO3 concentrated groundwater induces a ``hidden'' input of nitrogen to the crop which can reach 200 kgN/ha/yr in hotspot areas, enhancing groundwater contamination. Such fluxes, once taken into account in fertilizer management, would allow optimizing fertilizer consumption and mitigate high nitrate concentrations in groundwater. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Following an initial study of a tropical lateritic hillside system showing little iron isotope fractionation despite a strong accumulation within the soil profile, the present work investigates iron isotope signatures within the organic matter rich swamp system that represents 20% of the studied watershed surface (from Nsimi, South Cameroon). This study considers the soil–plant–water continuum in order to better understand the Fe elemental and isotopic transfer out of the ecosystem. Within the swamp system, the iron isotope compositions of gleysol samples (δ 57 Fe IRMM-14 ~+ 0.6‰) are significantly heavier than both the continental crust baseline and the reference lateritic soils from the hillslope (δ 57 Fe IRMM-14 = + 0.1‰). This enrichment towards heavy isotopes is attributed to a preferential removal of light iron isotopes during soil forming processes. Pedogenic transformations (i.e., gleyzation, organic complexation of metal and leaching) are responsible for the reductimorphic features observed in ferralitic horizons (i.e., incomplete degradation of organic matter in surface and soil whitening favored by good draining conditions). The organic carbon-rich waters of the swamp system are prone to redox processes and strong metal chelation. The dissolved iron (i.e., fraction 57 Fe signatures, with a downstream enrichment in heavy isotopes, from + 0.511 ± 0.266‰ to + 1.076 ± 0.240‰. The binding of iron (Fe III ) with organic matter can explain the observed enrichment in heavy isotopes in the dissolved fraction. On the contrary, plant leaves are significantly enriched in light Fe (δ 57 Fe of − 0.665 ± 0.035 and − 1.119 ± 0.080‰) relative to (i) the litter compartment (− 0.166 ± 0.078 to − 0.262 ± 0.013‰ for δ 57 Fe) and (ii) the most superficial soils. Iron isotopic compositions in plants and litter vary as a function of both plant species and season. Hence, the differences in Fe isotopic compositions between the various studied compartments suggest that Fe isotopes can be used (i) to study elemental transfers during soil pedogenesis in tropical environment and (ii) to better appraise and constrain iron biogeochemical cycle between surface horizon of soils, surface waters and the vegetation.

Systematic monitoring of subsurface hydrogeochemistry has been carried out for a period of one year in a humid tropical region along the Nethravati-Gurupur River. The major ion and stable isotope (delta O-18 and delta H-2) compositions are used to understand the hydrogeochemistry of groundwater and its interaction with surface water. In the study, it is observed that intense weathering of source rocks is the major source of chemical elements to the surface and subsurface waters. In addition, agricultural activities and atmospheric contributions also control the major ion chemistry of water in the study area. There is a clear seasonality in the groundwater chemistry, which is related to the recharge and discharge of the hydrological system. On a temporal scale, there is a decrease in major cation concentrations during the monsoon which is a result of dilution of sources from the weathering of rock minerals, and an increase in anion concentrations which is contributed by the atmosphere, accompanied by an increase in water level during the monsoon. The stable isotope composition indicates that groundwater in the basin is of meteoric origin and recharged directly from the local precipitation during the monsoonal season. Soon after the monsoon, groundwater and surface water mix in the subsurface region. The groundwater feeds the surface water during the lean river flow season.

The small experimental watershed of Mule Hole has been monitored for hydrology and chemistry since the last decade at hourly frequency for stream and monthly frequency for groundwater. It is covered by a dry tropical forest which generates intense evapotranspiration, limiting both runoff and groundwater recharge. Stream and groundwater fluxes are then disconnected, which provides a unique opportunity for distinguishing surficial from deep biogeochemical processes occurring in the watershed. Here, monthly monitoring of groundwater levels and chemistry were combined with hydrological modeling for studying how vegetation mediates the water stock in the vadose zone and the groundwater flux, and how this impacts the output flux of sodium by groundwater at seasonal and decadal scales. It is found that evapotranspiration intensity controls the pore water saturation with Na-plagioclase, which determines the depth of chemical weathering (soil vs saprolite). Moreover, evapotranspiration intensity regulates the water residence time in the vadose zone, from about a year downslope to 20 years upslope and the local groundwater discharge. These delays induce long term fluctuations in groundwater output fluxes and therefore in silicate weathering fluxes.

Introduction/objectifs Le syndrome de Bardet–Biedl (BBS) est lie a une dysfonction de cils primitifs (CP) [1] . La litterature rapporte un hypogonadisme [1] mais la fertilite des hommes BBS n’a jamais vraiment ete etudiee alors meme que des structures ciliees sont impliquees dans l’organogenese genito-urinaire, le demarrage de l’axe hypothalamo-hypophysaire, la mobilite spermatique et que la premiere mitose embryonnaire implique le centriole spermatique proximal. Materiel/patients et methodes La reproduction est etudiee chez 11 patients BBS. Les donnees cliniques et biologiques reproductives sont confrontees au genotype. Enfin, la fecondation in vitro (FIV) est rapportee pour un des patients. Resultats Les malformations genito-urinaires frequemment observees sont : cryptorchidie (5 sur 11), scrotum court (4/8), micropenis (5/8). En revanche, le volume testiculaire est normal (7/8). Quand elle est realisee, l’echographie retrouve des kystes epididymaires ou une agenesie epididymaire. Une hypospermie severe leur semble associee (3/3). Les taux de gonadotrophines et testosterone sont normaux chez tous sauf un. La numeration spermatique est globalement normale (8/10). La mobilite progressive spermatique varie de 5 a 45 %. Quand elle est realisee, la microscopie electronique spermatique ne revele aucune anomalie specifique. Enfin, l’approche psychologique souligne un manque de confiance en soi. Aucune association avec le genotype n’a pu etre etablie. Pour le patient concerne, les differentes etapes de la FIV se deroulent normalement et menent a la naissance d’un enfant bien portant. Conclusions La ciliopathie du BBS altere l’organogenese genito-urinaire masculine, surtout le penis et le scrotum probablement par une production insuffisante d’androgenes fœtaux, mais aussi surtout l’epididyme par un autre mecanisme. La structure flagellaire ne semble pas atteinte. Enfin, le manque de confiance en soi probablement en lien avec la cecite et l’obesite, pourrait expliquer pourquoi si peu de patients BBS expriment un desir d’enfant. Ces resultats demandent confirmation dans une plus grande cohorte de patients BBS.

The study presents a 3-year time series data on dissolved trace elements and rare earth elements (REEs) in a monsoon-dominated river basin, the Nethravati River in tropical Southwestern India. The river basin lies on the metamorphic transition boundary which separates the Peninsular Gneiss and Southern Granulitic province belonging to Archean and Tertiary-Quaternary period (Western Dharwar Craton). The basin lithology is mainly composed of granite gneiss, charnockite and metasediment. This study highlights the importance of time series data for better estimation of metal fluxes and to understand the geochemical behaviour of metals in a river basin. The dissolved trace elements show seasonality in the river water metal concentrations forming two distinct groups of metals. First group is composed of heavy metals and minor elements that show higher concentrations during dry season and lesser concentrations during the monsoon season. Second group is composed of metals belonging to lanthanides and actinides with higher concentration in the monsoon and lower concentrations during the dry season. Although the metal concentration of both the groups appears to be controlled by the discharge, there are important biogeochemical processes affecting their concentration. This includes redox reactions (for Fe, Mn, As, Mo, Ba and Ce) and pH-mediated adsorption/desorption reactions (for Ni, Co, Cr, Cu and REEs). The abundance of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides as a result of redox processes could be driving the geochemical redistribution of metals in the river water. There is a Ce anomaly (Ce/Ce*) at different time periods, both negative and positive, in case of dissolved phase, whereas there is positive anomaly in the particulate and bed sediments. The Ce anomaly correlates with the variations in the dissolved oxygen indicating the redistribution of Ce between particulate and dissolved phase under acidic to neutral pH and lower concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. Unlike other tropical and major world rivers, the effect of organic complexation on metal variability is negligible in the Nethravati River water.

Summary This is a report of six cases of respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the nasal cavities that were characterized by: symptoms of nasal obstruction and dysosmia; endoscopic appearances of bilateral nasal polyposis affecting the olfactory clefts; CT imaging showing enlargement of the olfactory clefts; MRI (rarely reported in the literature) revealing clearly delineated cerebriform tissue filling in the olfactory clefts; histological confirmation in all cases; and recovery after surgical endoscopic resection without the need for associated sinus surgery.

In the last decades, globally several small experimental watersheds were set up to study the climate and agricultural influences on water and biogeochemical cycles. Recently, the concept and importance of Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) was made and this resulted in developing such observatories in several countries including a global network of CZOs. The CZOs combine characterization, long term monitoring and modeling to allow understanding of the processes governing water and biogeochemical cycles in a small experimental watershed or network of watersheds. The Kabini CZO too was formed from similar twin experimental watersheds (forested and cultivated) developed during the last decade in the Kabini river basin in the south western part of India. A summary of the salient studies performed on water and biogeochemical cycles under the influence of climate and agriculture during the last ten years in the Kabini CZO are reported here.

We have evaluated the long-term chemical and physical weathering mass balance of an anomalously thick saprolite profile (> 30 m thickness) developed in granitic rocks near Curacavi, Coastal Range of central Chile. The results of geochemical mass balance calculations for the regolith profile point to a moderate depletion for Na and Sr due to the plagioclase dissolution and precipitation of kaolinite. Furthermore, silicon shows a predominantly constant behaviour along the profile that is indicative of incongruent weathering of plagioclase, strongly suggesting that quartz dissolution conditions are not reached. In addition, low depletion of K, Mg, Ca, Rb, and Ba in the saprolite indicates a low degree of K-feldspar, biotite and hornblende weathering. Denudation rates calculated using cosmogenic 10Be data range from 20 to 70 m/Ma. If the saprolite thickness has reached a steady-state condition, the reported denudation rates lead to mineral residence times in the upper part of the saprolite profile of about 0.5 to 1.8 Ma. With such duration a higher weathering degree than observed at Curacavi would be expected. This apparent contradiction might be explained if all of the weatherable plagioclase has been dissolved under the present-day precipitation and temperature conditions of the Curacavi region. Therefore, we propose that the Curacavi profile could be in local equilibrium with respect to the weatherable fraction of plagioclase. A local equilibrium regime may be reached when the overall degree of depletion is small in a weathering profile. Uniform elemental distribution and low weathering degree in the thick weathering profile at Curacavi defy the traditional notion of weathering regimes and reveal the importance of exploratory studies in order to better understand weathering process in Mediterranean and semi-arid climate regions.

Water-rock reactions are driven by the influx of water, which are out of equilibrium with the mineral assemblage in the rock. Here a mass balance approach is adopted to quantify these reactions. Based on field experiments carried out in a granito-gneissic small experimental watershed (SEW), Mule Hole SEW (similar to 4.5 km(2)), quartz, oligoclase, sericite, epidote and chlorite are identified as the basic primary minerals while kaolinite, goethite and smectite are identified as the secondary minerals. Observed groundwater chemistry is used to determine the weathering rates, in terms of `Mass Transfer Coefficients' (MTCs), of both primary and secondary minerals. Weathering rates for primary and secondary minerals are quantified in two steps. In the first step, top red soil is analyzed considering precipitation chemistry as initial phase and water chemistry of seepage flow as final phase. In the second step, minerals present in the saprolite layer are analyzed considering groundwater chemistry as the output phase. Weathering rates thus obtained are converted into weathering fluxes (Q(weathering)) using the recharge quantity. Spatial variability in the mineralogy observed among the thirteen wells of Mule Hole SEW is observed to be reflected in the MTC results and thus in the weathering fluxes. Weathering rates of the minerals in this silicate system varied from few 10 mu mol/L (in case of biotite) to 1000 s of micromoles per liter (calcite). Similarly, fluxes of biotite are observed to be least (7 +/- 5 mol/ha/yr) while those of calcite are highest (1265 791 mol/ha/yr). Further, the fluxes determined annually for all the minerals are observed to be within the bandwidth of the standard deviation of these fluxes. Variations in these annual fluxes are indicating the variations in the precipitation. Hence, the standard deviation indicated the temporal variations in the fluxes, which might be due to the variations in the annual rainfall. Summary Objectives Attempt to describe and analyse the radiological and nuclear medicine patterns of sinonasal sarcoidosis (SNS) still poorly reported in the literature. Material and methods Retrospective single institution study of 22 consecutive patients with symptomatic biopsy-proven SNS to evaluate the interest of CT, MRI, 67 Ga scintigraphy and 18 F-FDG PET/CT for diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up. Results Nodules of the septum and turbinates are the most suggestive CT and MRI features. Other CT features such as sinusal filling, mucosal thickening, osteosclerosis or destructive sinonasal lesions are not specific and depend on clinical context and evolutive stage of SNS. 18 F-FDG PET/CT provides complete morphofunctional mapping of active inflammatory sites related to sarcoidosis with a better diagnostic sensitivity (100%) compared to 67 Gallium scintigraphy (75%). The changes in 18 F-FDG uptake intensity could reflect the efficacy of treatment. Conclusion SNS is an uncommon and probably underdiagnosed phenotype of sarcoidosis. Even if guided biopsy remains necessary for SNS confirmation, medical imaging plays an important role in diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up. CT features with nodules of the septum and/or turbinates are suggestive of SNS contrary to other nonspecific CT findings. CT imaging is directly related severity, reversibility and course of SNS and provide an original radiological staging system in order to predict patient clinical outcome. PET/CT may be used for diagnosis assessement but also to monitor treatment response in a given clinical context, in a patient with histopathologically-proven SNS. Prospective and long term studies are necessary to validate these preliminary results.

Chemical composition of rainwater changes from sea to inland under the influence of several major factors - topographic location of area, its distance from sea, annual rainfall. A model is developed here to quantify the variation in precipitation chemistry under the influence of inland distance and rainfall amount. Various sites in India categorized as 'urban', 'suburban' and 'rural' have been considered for model development. pH, HCO3, NO3 and Mg do not change much from coast to inland while, SO4 and Ca change is subjected to local emissions. Cl and Na originate solely from sea salinity and are the chemistry parameters in the model. Non-linear multiple regressions performed for the various categories revealed that both rainfall amount and precipitation chemistry obeyed a power law reduction with distance from sea. Cl and Na decrease rapidly for the first 100 km distance from sea, then decrease marginally for the next 100 km, and later stabilize. Regression parameters estimated for different cases were found to be consistent (R-2 similar to 0.8). Variation in one of the parameters accounted for urbanization. Model was validated using data points from the southern peninsular region of the country. Estimates are found to be within 99.9% confidence interval. Finally, this relationship between the three parameters - rainfall amount, coastline distance, and concentration (in terms of Cl and Na) was validated with experiments conducted in a small experimental watershed in the south-west India. Chemistry estimated using the model was in good correlation with observed values with a relative error of similar to 5%. Monthly variation in the chemistry is predicted from a downscaling model and then compared with the observed data. Hence, the model developed for rain chemistry is useful in estimating the concentrations at different spatio-temporal scales and is especially applicable for south-west region of India. There is an increasing body of evidence showing that land use may affect the concentration and flux of dissolved silica (DSi) and amorphous, biogenic Si particles (ASi/BSi) in surface waters. Here, we present a study of riverine waters collected within the Kaveri River Basin, which has a long history of land occupation with + 43% population increase in the watershed during the last 30 years associated with agricultural practices including canal irrigation from reservoirs and, more recently, bore well pumping. We report total dissolved solids (TDS) and suspended material (TSM) for 15 river stations and 5 reservoirs along the Kaveri itself and its main tributaries sampled during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon periods in 2006 and 2007. The TDS in the Kaveri River globally increases from the upper reaches (humid to sub-humid climate) to the lower reaches (semi-arid climate), and at a given station from monsoon (M) to hot season (HS). The DSi concentrations range from 129 μmol L − 1 (M) to 390 μmol L − 1 (HS) in the main Kaveri stream and reaches up to 686 μmol L − 1 in the Shimsha River (HS). Our results indicate that DSi and the main solutes of the Kaveri River have not drastically changed since the last 30 years despite the population increase. The pollution index of Van der Weijden and Pacheco (2006) ranges from 13% to 54% but DSi does not seem to be affected by domestic wastewater. ASi is mostly composed of diatoms and phytoliths that both play roles in controlling DSi. We suggest that DSi and ASi delivered to the cultivated areas through irrigation from reservoir may have two important consequences: increasing Si bioavailability for crops and limiting Si flux to the ocean.

International audience; The performance of the Magnetic Resonance Sounding (MRS) method applied to the investigation of heterogeneous hard-rock aquifers was studied. It was shown using both numerical modeling and field measurements that MRS could be applied to the investigation of the weathered part of hard-rock aquifers when the product of the free water content multiplied by the thickness of the aquifer is >0.2 (for example, 10-m-thick layer with a 2% water content).
