Search

Several experiments around the world are looking for a new particle, named Dark Boson, which may do the link between the Ordinary Matter (which forms basically stars, planets, interstellar gas...) and the Hidden Sectors of the Universe. This particle, if it exists, would act as the messenger of a new fundamental interaction of nature. In this paper, the underlying Dark Sectors theory will be introduced first. A non-exhaustive summary of experimental studies carried out to date and foreseen in the incoming years will be presented after,including the 8Be anomaly. The last section will provide a status of the New JEDI**** project which aims to investigate the existence or not of a Dark Boson in the MeV range.

We have measured at GSI-Darmstadt (Germany) the reactions 136 Xe + p and 136 Xe +12 C, using the inverse-kinematics technique at 1 A.GeV and the large acceptance SPALADiN setup. The combination of both provides a very good coverage of the phase-space of the excited system decay channels, allowing the study of the relative importance of those decay channels, as well as a very efficient filter to reject from the detection the particles and nuclear fragments of high energy in the projectile centre-of-mass frame, essentially produced in the first-instant nucleon-nucleon collisions, prior to the decay of the excited nuclear system. Our analysis in the two-step scenario permits one to estimate on an event basis E*/A, the excitation energy per nucleon of the decaying nuclear system, and to study the E*/A dependence of the different decay channels. The E*/A range of overlap of the 136 Xe + p and 136Xe+12 C reactions is large and allows for an extensive comparison between both reactions, and therefore provides a strong test bench of the entrance-channel-independence hypothesis of the excited-system decay. We address the two-step-scenario assumption in the light of our data and their comparison with different up-to-date models.

The SEPAGE spectrometer (Spectrometre Electrons Protons A Grandes Energies) was realized within the PETAL+ project funded by the French ANR (French National Agency for Research). This plasma diagnostic, installed on the LMJ-PETAL laser facility, is dedicated to the measurement of charged particle energy spectra generated by experiments using PETAL (PETawatt Aquitaine Laser). SEPAGE is inserted inside the 10-meter diameter LMJ experimental chamber with a SID (Diagnostic Insertion System) in order to be close enough to the target. It is composed of two Thomson Parabola measuring ion spectra and more particularly proton spectra ranging from 0.1 to 20 MeV and from 8 to 200 MeV for the low and high energy channels respectively. The electron spectrum is also measured with an energy range between 0.1 and 150 MeV. The front part of the diagnostic carries a film stack that can be placed as close as 100 mm from the target center chamber. This stack allows a spatial and spectral characterization of the entire proton beam. It can also be used to realize proton radiographies.

Jefferson Lab experiment E91-013 measured the energy dependence of proton propagation in nuclei, using the quasi-free (e, e{prime}p) reaction. The ratios of the experimental (e, e{prime}p) cross-sections integrated over the quasi-free region to PWIA calculations are presented as a function of momentum transfer, (0.6 < Q{sup 2} < 3.3 GeV{sup 2}) and target nucleus (C, Fe and Au). As a first step towards a longitudinal and transverse separation of the quasi-free cross-section, a super ratio of the measured to the calculated cross-sections at forward and backward angles is presented.

In order to protect their detection against the giant electromagnetic pulse generated by the interaction of the PETAL laser with its target, PETAL diagnostics will be equipped with passive detectors. For SESAME and SEPAGE systems, a combination of imaging plate (IP) detectors with high-Z material protection layers will be used to provide additional features such as: 1) Ensuring a response of the detector to be independent of its environment and hence homogeneous over the surface of the diagnostics; 2) Shielding the detectors against high-energy photons from the PETAL target. In this work, calibration experiments of such detectors based on IPs were performed at electron and proton facilities with the goal of covering the energy range of the particle detection at PETAL from 0.1 to 200 MeV. The introduction aims at providing the reader the methods and tools used for this study. The second chapter presents the results of two experiments performed with electrons in the range from 5 to 180 MeV. The third chapter describes an experiment and its results, where protons in the energy range between 80 and 200 MeV were sent onto detectors. The fourth chapter is dedicated to an experiment with protons and ions in the energy range from 1 to 22 MeV proton energy, which aimed at studying our detector responses and testing the demonstrator of the SEPAGE diagnostic. We used the GEANT4 toolkit to analyse our data and compute the detection responses on the whole energy range from 0.1 to 1000 MeV.; Afin de protéger leurs systèmes de détection de l'impulsion électromagnétique géante générée par l'interaction du laser PETAL avec sa cible, les diagnostics de PETAL seront équipés de détecteurs passifs. Pour les ensembles SEPAGE et SESAME, une combinaison d'Imaging Plates (IP) et de couches de protection de matériaux de grand numéro atomique sera utilisée, qui permettra: 1) d'assurer que la réponse des détecteurs sera indépendante de son environnement mécanique proche dans les diagnostics et donc homogène sur toute la détection, 2) de blinder les détecteurs contre les photons de haute énergie produits dans la cible de PETAL. Dans le travail présenté ici, nous avons réalisé des expériences d'étalonnage avec les IPs auprès d'installations générant des électrons, des protons ou des ions, dans le but de couvrir le domaine en énergie cinétique de la détection des particules chargées de PETAL, de 0.1 à 200 MeV. L'introduction a pour but de décrire les méthodes et outils utilisés au cours de cette étude. Le second chapitre présente les résultats de deux expériences réalisées avec des électrons dans le domaine d'énergie cinétique [5-180] MeV. Le troisième chapitre décrit une expérience et ses résultats avec les protons entre 80 et 200 MeV étaient envoyés sur nos détecteurs. Le quatrième chapitre est consacré à une expérience utilisant des protons et des ions entre1 et 22 MeV en énergie de protons et dont l'objectif était l'étude de détecteurs et le test du démonstrateur de SEPAGE. Nous avons utilisé GEANT4 pour l'analyse de nos données et prédire la réponse de nos détecteurs dans le domaine 0.1 à 1000 MeV.

The collision of 136Xe with the proton and with 12C at 1 GeV per nucleon of projectile kinetic energy in the centre of mass has been studied in inverse kinematics using the SPALADIN experimental setup at the GSI facility. This manuscript describes the analysis of these collisions realized in spring 2009. The detection in coincidence of the final state fragments (projectile residues, neutrons and light charged fragments) with a large geometrical efficiency is provided by the inverse kinematics combined with a large aperture dipole magnet and large detectors. Such a coincidence, measured on an event basis, allows selecting, in a model-independent way, the prefragment, the excited nuclear system formed after the intranuclear cascade as a function of its excitation energy. Hence, we were able to study the evolution of the prefragment deexcitation mechanism (evaporation of light particles, asymmetric binary decay, multiple fragmentation…) as a function of its excitation energy. The data of the 136Xe + p reaction have been compared mainly to three deexcitation models (SMM, GEMINI++ and ABLA07) coupled to the intranuclear cascade code INCL4. Despite the relatively good and global agreement between these models and our data, significant discrepancies appeared concerning in particular the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF). Comparison between the 136Xe + 12C and the 136Xe + p data exhibits an important similarity in the deexcitation of the pre-fragments. This suggests that the nuclear cascade leads, for both targets, to similar prefragment types in the range of excitation energy (0 to 4 MeV per nucleon) common to both reactions. Higher excitation energies, reached only in the 136Xe + 12C reaction, show a qualitative difference in the deexcitation of the pre-fragment, with much higher multiplicities of IMF per event, increasing with the excitation energy.; Les réactions 136Xe + p et 136Xe + 12C à 1 GeV par nucléon d’énergie cinétique du projectile dans le centre de masse ont été étudiées en cinématique inverse à l’aide du dispositif expérimental SPALADIN, installé auprès de l’accélérateur d’ions lourds de GSI. Si ces modèles semblent décrire globalement les observables de notre expérience, des désaccords significatifs sont apparus notamment en ce qui concerne la production des fragments de masse intermédiaire (IMF). La comparaison des données 136Xe + 12C avec celles de la réaction 136Xe + p fait apparaître une grande similitude dans la désexcitation des pré-fragments qui laisse entrevoir que la cascade intranucléaire mène, dans les deux cibles, aux mêmes types de pré-fragments sur la plage d’énergie d’excitation commune aux deux réactions (0 à 4 MeV par nucléon). Le régime d’excitation au-dessus de 4 MeV par nucléon, accessible uniquement pour la réaction 136Xe + 12C, montre une différence qualitative dans la désexcitation du pré-fragment, avec notamment une production beaucoup plus importante d’IMF, avec des multiplicités élevées par événement, qui croît avec l’énergie d’excitation.
