1. JAX-COSMO: An End-to-End Differentiable and GPU Accelerated Cosmology Library

Abstract

We present jax-cosmo, a library for automatically differentiable cosmological theory calculations. It uses the JAX library, which has created a new coding ecosystem, especially in probabilistic programming. As well as batch acceleration, just-in-time compilation, and automatic optimization of code for different hardware modalities (CPU, GPU, TPU), JAX exposes an automatic differentiation (autodiff) mechanism. Thanks to autodiff, jax-cosmo gives access to the derivatives of cosmological likelihoods with respect to any of their parameters, and thus enables a range of powerful Bayesian inference algorithms, otherwise impractical in cosmology, such as Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and Variational Inference. In its initial release, jax-cosmo implements background evolution, linear and non-linear power spectra (using halofit or the Eisenstein and Hu transfer function), as well as angular power spectra with the Limber approximation for galaxy and weak lensing probes, all differentiable with respect to the cosmological parameters and their other inputs. We illustrate how autodiff can be a game-changer for common tasks involving Fisher matrix computations, or full posterior inference with gradient-based techniques. In particular, we show how Fisher matrices are now fast, exact, no longer require any fine tuning, and are themselves differentiable. Finally, using a Dark Energy Survey Year 1 3x2pt analysis as a benchmark, we demonstrate how jax-cosmo can be combined with Probabilistic Programming Languages to perform posterior inference with state-of-the-art algorithms including a No U-Turn Sampler, Automatic Differentiation Variational Inference,and Neural Transport HMC. We further demonstrate that Normalizing Flows using Neural Transport are a promising methodology for model validation in the early stages of analysis. Abstract

The rapidly increasing statistical power of cosmological imaging surveys requires us to reassess the regime of validity for various approximations that accelerate the calculation of relevant theoretical predictions. In this paper, we present the results of the 'N5K non-Limber integration challenge', the goal of which was to quantify the performance of different approaches to calculating the angular power spectrum of galaxy number counts and cosmic shear data without invoking the so-called 'Limber approximation', in the context of the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We quantify the performance, in terms of accuracy and speed, of three non-Limber implementations: ${\tt FKEM (CosmoLike)}$, ${\tt Levin}$, and ${\tt matter}$, themselves based on different integration schemes and approximations. We find that in the challenge's fiducial 3x2pt LSST Year 10 scenario, ${\tt FKEM (CosmoLike)}$ produces the fastest run time within the required accuracy by a considerable margin, positioning it favourably for use in Bayesian parameter inference. This method, however, requires further development and testing to extend its use to certain analysis scenarios, particularly those involving a scale-dependent growth rate. For this and other reasons discussed herein, alternative approaches such as ${\tt matter}$ and ${\tt Levin}$ may be necessary for a full exploration of parameter space. We also find that the usual first-order Limber approximation is insufficiently accurate for LSST Year 10 3x2pt analysis on $\ell=200-1000$, whereas invoking the second-order Limber approximation on these scales (with a full non-Limber method at smaller $\ell$) does suffice.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the Rubin Observatory Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) 3x2pt tomography challenge, which served as a first step toward optimizing the tomographic binning strategy for the main DESC analysis. The task of choosing an optimal tomographic binning scheme for a photometric survey is made particularly delicate in the context of a metacalibrated lensing catalogue, as only the photometry from the bands included in the metacalibration process (usually riz and potentially g) can be used in sample definition. The goal of the challenge was to collect and compare bin assignment strategies under various metrics of a standard 3x2pt cosmology analysis in a highly idealized setting to establish a baseline for realistically complex follow-up studies; in this preliminary study, we used two sets of cosmological simulations of galaxy redshifts and photometry under a simple noise model neglecting photometric outliers and variation in observing conditions, and contributed algorithms were provided with a representative and complete training set. We review and evaluate the entries to the challenge, finding that even from this limited photometry information, multiple algorithms can separate tomographic bins reasonably well, reaching figures-of-merit scores close to the attainable maximum. We further find that adding the g band to riz photometry improves metric performance by ~15% and that the optimal bin assignment strategy depends strongly on the science case: which figure-of-merit is to be optimized, and which observables (clustering, lensing, or both) are included.

Abstract

Diffuse low grade gliomas are invasive and incurable brain tumors that inevitably transform into higher grade ones. A classical treatment to delay this transition is radiotherapy (RT). Following RT, the tumor gradually shrinks during a period of typically 6 months to 4 years before regrowing. To improve the patient’s health-related quality of life and help clinicians build personalized follow-ups, one would benefit from predictions of the time during which the tumor is expected to decrease. The challenge is to provide a reliable estimate of this regrowth time shortly after RT (i.e. with few data), although patients react differently to the treatment. To this end, we analyze the tumor size dynamics from a batch of 20 high-quality longitudinal data, and propose a simple and robust analytical model, with just 4 parameters. From the study of their correlations, we build a statistical constraint that helps determine the regrowth time even for patients for which we have only a few measurements of the tumor size. We validate the procedure on the data and predict the regrowth time at the moment of the first MRI after RT, with precision of, typically, 6 months. Using virtual patients, we study whether some forecast is still possible just three months after RT. We obtain some reliable estimates of the regrowth time in 75% of the cases, in particular for all “fast-responders”. The remaining 25% represent cases where the actual regrowth time is large and can be safely estimated with another measurement a year later. These results show the feasibility of making personalized predictions of the tumor regrowth time shortly after RT.

Abstract

The Tianlai Dish Pathfinder Array is a radio interferometer designed to test techniques for 21~cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization universe as a means for measuring large-scale cosmic structure. It performs drift scans of the sky at constant declination. We describe the design, calibration, noise level, and stability of this instrument based on the analysis of about $\sim 5 \%$ of 6,200 hours of on-sky observations through October, 2019. Beam pattern determinations using drones and the transit of bright sources are in good agreement, and compatible with electromagnetic simulations. Combining all the baselines, we make maps around bright sources and show that the array behaves as expected. A few hundred hours of observations at different declinations have been used to study the array geometry and pointing imperfections, as well as the instrument noise behaviour. We show that the system temperature is below 80~K for most feed antennas, and that noise fluctuations decrease as expected with integration time, at least up to a few hundred seconds. Analysis of long integrations, from 10 nights of observations of the North Celestial Pole, yielded visibilities with amplitudes of 20-30~mK, consistent with the expected signal from the NCP radio sky with $, 30 pages, 38 figures

Abstract

The spherical harmonics $m$-mode decomposition is a powerful sky map reconstruction method suitable for radio interferometers operating in transit mode. It can be applied to various configurations, including dish arrays and cylinders. We describe the computation of the instrument response function, the point spread function (PSF), transfer function, the noise covariance matrix and noise power spectrum. The analysis in this paper is focused on dish arrays operating in transit mode. We show that arrays with regular spacing have more pronounced side lobes as well as structures in their noise power spectrum, compared to arrays with irregular spacing, specially in the north-south direction. A good knowledge of the noise power spectrum $C^{\mathrm{noise}}(\ell)$ is essential for intensity mapping experiments as non uniform $C^{\mathrm{noise}}(\ell)$ is a potential problem for the measurement of the HI power spectrum. Different configurations have been studied to optimise the PAON-4 and Tianlai dish array layouts. Abstract

An optimization of the CERN SPL beam line has been performed guided by the sensitivities to the \theta_{13} mixing angle and to the \delta_{CP} Dirac CP violating phase. A UNO-like 440 ktons water Cerenkov detector located at 130 km from the target in a new foreseen Frejus laboratory has been used as a generic detector. Concerning the \delta_{CP} independent \theta_{13} sensitivity, a gain of about 20% may be reached using a 3.5 GeV proton beam with a 40 m long, 2 m radius decay tunnel compared to the up to now considered 2.2 GeV beam energy and 20 m long, 1 m radius decay tunnel. Abstract

This white paper describes the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC), whose goal is the study of dark energy and related topics in fundamental physics with data from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). It provides an overview of dark energy science and describes the current and anticipated state of the field. It makes the case for the DESC by laying out a robust analytical framework for dark energy science that has been defined by its members and the comprehensive three-year work plan they have developed for implementing that framework. The analysis working groups cover five key probes of dark energy: weak lensing, large scale structure, galaxy clusters, Type Ia supernovae, and strong lensing. The computing working groups span cosmological simulations, galaxy catalogs, photon simulations and a systematic software and computational framework for LSST dark energy data analysis. The technical working groups make the connection between dark energy science and the LSST system. The working groups have close linkages, especially through the use of the photon simulations to study the impact of instrument design and survey strategy on analysis methodology and cosmological parameter estimation. The white paper describes several high priority tasks identified by each of the 16 working groups. Over the next three years these tasks will help prepare for LSST analysis, make synergistic connections with ongoing cosmological surveys and provide the dark energy community with state of the art analysis tools. Members of the community are invited to join the LSST DESC, according to the membership policies described in the white paper. Abstract

International audience; PARISROC is a front-end electronics ASIC designed for the next generation of neutrino experiments. These detectors will take place in megaton size water tanks and will require very large surface of photo-detection [3]. PMm2 project proposes to segment the very large surface of photo-detection in macro pixels made of 16 photomultiplier tubes connected to an autonomous front-end electronics. The ASIC must only send out the relevant data by network to the central data storage. This data management reduces considerably the cost of these detectors. The PARISROC chip integrates 16 channels totally independents. Each analogue channel is made of a low noise preamplifier with variable and adjustable gain. The variable gain is common for all channels. The gain is also tuneable channel by channel to adjust the input detector's gain (on 8 bit). The preamplifier is followed by a slow channel for the charge measurement in parallel with a fast channel for the trigger output. The slow channel is made by a variable (50-200ns) slow shaper followed by an analogue memory with depth of 2 to provide a linear charge measurement up to 50pC; this charge is converted by a 12 bit Wilkinson ADC. The fast channel is composed of a fast shaper (15ns) followed by 2 low offset discriminators to auto-trig down to 10fC. The thresholds are loaded by 2 internal 10-bit DACs common for the 16 channels. The 2 discriminator outputs are multiplexed to provide only 16 trigger outputs. Each output trigger is latched to hold the state of the response until the end of clock cycle. It is also delayed to open the hold switch on the maximum of the slow shaper. On each channel, a fine time measurement is made by an analogue memory with depth of 2 which sample a 12 bit ramp, common for all channels, as the same time of the charge. This time is then converted by a 12 bit Wilkinson ADC. The two ADCs discriminators have a common ramp, of 8, 10 or 12 bits, as threshold to convert the charge and the fine time. A bandgap bloc provides all voltage references. A digital part [4] manages all the acquisition, the conversion and the readout and provides by a 24-bit counter the coarse time measurement or timestamp. Design, simulation results and measurements of the first prototype will be presented.

Abstract

The main task of the Target Tracker of the long baseline neutrino oscillation OPERA experiment, is to locate in which of the target elementary constituents, the lead/emulsion bricks, the neutrino interactions have occurred and also to give calorimetric information about each event. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of long plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multi-anode photomultiplier tubes. The Target Tracker is composed of 62 scintillating walls of a total surface of about 6000 m 2 . Each wall is made by assembling 4 horizontal and 4 vertical modules of 64.7 m long, scintillating strips. This detector has observed the first neutrino interactions during August 2006. In this paper we will describe all elements used for the construction and operation of this detector and we will also give its main characteristics.

Abstract

Many different approaches to the geometric and statistical analysis of document layouts have been proposed in the literature. The development of practical branchand- bound algorithms for solving geometric matching problems under noise and uncertainty has enabled the formulation of new classes of geometric layout analysis methods based on globally optimal maximum likelihood interpretations for well-defined models of the spatial statistics of document images. I review this approach to geometric layout analysis using text line finding and column finding in the presence of noise and uncertainty as examples and compare the approach with selected other statistical and geometric layout analysis methods.
