the most important and harmful tick species in the livestock sector in Burkina Faso today. This tick has developed resistance to most classes of synthetic acaricides. The objective of this work is to assess the efficiency of plant extracts on this tick to find an alternative. Thus, the acaricidal activity of hydroethanolic and hexanic extracts of Ocimum americanum .L, Ocimum gratissimum .L and Laggera oloptera (DC) Adams was evaluated on adults of this tick by the adult immersion method. The mortality, the inhibition of the laying, the hatching rate, and the effectiveness of each extract have been evaluated with concentrations at 100 mg/mL and at 200 mg/mL, respectively. The best mortality rate was 56%, with the hydroethanolic extract of L. oloptera at 200 mg / mL. The hydroethanolic extract of O. gratissimum was most effective with the best rates of egg inhibition and hatching rates at 200 mg / mL. The results of this study could be used for the development of new bio-acaricide formulations to fight against the tick R. Aims: We aimed in this study to investigate the mechanisms of the vasorelaxation effect caused by the anthocyanins-enriched extract of Odontonema strictum flowers. Study Design: Anthocyanins-enriched extract of Odontonema strictum flowers and vasorelaxantes activities of mice aortic rings. Place and Duration of Study: The flowers of Odontonema strictum (Nees) Kuntze (Acanthaceae) were collected in January 2015 at the “Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (IRSS)” experimental station in Ouagadougou. The experiments were conducted in October - November 2018 at the department of Medicine and Traditional Pharmacopeia-Pharmacy (MEPHATRA-PH)/IRSS. Methodology: The extract was enriched in anthocyanins using Amberlite XAD-7 non-ionic resin column. The vasorelaxant activity of anthocyanins-enriched extract of O. strictum flowers (OSF) was tested using isolated organ-chamber technique with mice aorta rings. Results: OSF showed concentration-dependent relaxant effects on mice endothelium intact or denuded aortic rings pre-contracted with U46619 (10-7 M) and KCl (80 mM). OSF induced relaxation in the mice aortic rings by stimulating smooth muscle cells. The vasorelaxant effect of OSF (10-1000 µg/mL) was similar in endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded aortic rings. The maximum relaxant effect was 93.78 ± 4.69% and 92.30 ± 3.19% for endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded aortic rings, respectively. Moreover, after incubation of the aorta rings with OSF (400 µg/mL) or vehicle (0.02% of DMSO) in PSS, OSF blocked the contraction through mechanism involving inhibition of CaCl2 and U46619 effect. Conclusions: The present study provides a pharmacological evidence for the antihypertensive medicinal use of Odontonema strictum by highlighting its vasorelaxant activity.

Flavonoids were extracted from Odontonema strictum leaves by supercritical carbon dioxide, with ethanol. The effect of three independents variables (time, pressure and temperature) on the Total Flavonoid Content (TFC) were optimized by factorial investigation. The TFC and flavonoid recovery varies respectively from 99.33 to 247.78 mg/g of dried extract and 10.68–18.92 mg/g of dried leaves powder, while the conventional solvent extraction (CSE) yielded 36.45 mg/g and 3.13 mg/g. Analysis of the factorial identified the optimal conditions with an extraction time of 270 min and a pressure of 200 bar, the temperature had no effect within the tested ranges. The predicted TFC was 203.11 mg/g under optimal conditions and experimentally 230.48 mg/g. The antioxidant activity with 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method of the extracts under optimum conditions was 49.21% while the CSE extract was 37.05%. The TLC analysis of the supercritical fluid extracts from the optimum conditions showed 5 majors flavonoids.

The Intensification of cowpea production is a priority because of its role in household income generation and its contribution to food security. To evaluate the effect of organic fertilizers on cowpea productivity, a dispersed block experiment design was set up in Saria in the semi-arid zone of Burkina Faso during the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons. The combination of Biodeposit (Agro and Elixir) and Organova were used alone or in combination with mineral fertilizer. The results showed that during the two years, the highest cowpea grain yields were obtained with the Organova + the recommended mineral fertilizer and Biodeposit Agro + the recommended mineral fertilizer. The combination of organic fertilizers and recommended mineral fertilizer resulted in a 45% and 59% increase respectively with Organova and Biodeposit (Agro + Elixir). These two fertilizers then have the same effects on cowpea productivity. In the semi-arid zone where there is competition for organic resources, organic fertilizers can be used in combination with mineral fertilizer to improve cowpea productivity.

Distillation process of aromatic plants produces a considerable amount of solid residues, which are rich in secondary metabolites known as bioactive compounds. In this context, residues from hydrodistillation of selected aromatic plants such as Mentha piperita L., Cymbopogon citratus Stapf and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh, have been studied for their total polyphenol content using Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR) method, total flavonoid content using aluminium chlorid (AlCl3) and antioxidant properties were determined as DPPH radical-scavenging ability (IC50). The anti-termite activity was evaluated by a direct non-choice test. The higher antioxidant activity (IC50 = 0.20 mg/ml) and polyphenols content (224.32 mg GAE/g of dried extract) were showed with E. camaldulensis aqueous extract. However, M. piperita and C. citratus ethanolic extracts showed higher flavonoid content (190.99 and 185.19 mg QE/g of dried extract). The most active extract against termite Reticulitermes flavipes was E. camaldulensis ethanolic extract presenting toxicity at 5% and 10% w/w as concentrations. All these data showed that strategic extraction of residues from hydrodistillation can provide interesting bioactive compounds as novel anti-termite agents in plants protection and allow to give an added-value to aromatic plants.

The use of herbal drugs for primary care is nowadays central to the global health system. In developing countries, it meets both economic and socio-cultural requirements. However, this increase about the use of herbal medicines has led to various forms of abuses related to factors that are generally extrinsic to the drug, such as incorrect botanical identification, falsification, fungal or bacterial contamination, etc. The need for the standardization of herbal drugs is more than ever important for the viability of phytotherapy. This study focuses on saye, a mixture of three plants including the root of Cochlospermum planchonii; the whole plant of Phyllanthus amarus and the leaves of Cassia alata. This traditional polyherbal formulation that we intend to promote is used in Burkina Faso as a herbal tea to treat malaria. In this present study, the aim is to control the quality and standardization of the saye and its different components in order to produce an antimalarial phytomedicine. More precisely, we present here, the phytochemical composition and physico-chemical study of the mixture and the vegetable raw materials. In this study, we are particularly concerned with the study of organoleptic properties, moisture content, total ash content, successive extraction yields, fingerprinting by thin layer chromatography, phytochemical screening and total flavonoids content. To evaluate the content of flavonoids selected as chemical bioactive marker, we used a method of spectrophotometric assay. The phytochemical study established fingerprints, identified the main secondary metabolites and determined the total flavonoid content in a selective extract of the saye. The physico-chemical analysis provided satisfactory results on the main indices, such as moisture content, total ash, heavy metals, etc. These results indicate a good treatment of plant raw materials and will certainly be used for the standardization of the drug and its quality control for future clinical studies.

Chemical shifts observed on NMR spectra for the styrylpyrylium salts were compared with net atomic charge for carbon obtained by AM1 semiempirical calculations. The position of the styryl group present low effect on chemical shifts for carbon atoms, while the presence of methyl group led to the unshielding of the substituted carbon.

Sickle cell disease is a major public health problem. It is the first genetic disease in the world. FACA syrup offers an alternative treatment. It is a dry powder preparation of two components, the roots barks of Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides Lam. (Rutaceae) Zepernick, Timler and Calotropis procera. Ait. R.B.r. (Asclepiadaceae). The product was developed at Institute for Research in Health Sciences (IRSS) from a traditional recipe used in Burkina Faso for treatment of sickle cell crises. This study aimed to establish physical-chemical, pharmaco technical and microbiological control parameters essential for the standardization of the phytomedicine. This valuation concerned specifications of moisture content, pH, the fingerprint by thin layer chromatography, pesticide residues, heavy metal content, microbial quality, and total ash. These charcteristics were determined by the methods prescribed by the World Health Organization (1998) and the European Pharmacopoeia 6th edition. The results have shown that dry syrups and reconstituted syrups were sweet, slightly spicy with a bitter after taste, a white room color and a faint odor. The density at the preparation was 0.985 and the pH was 5.93. After 2 months of storage in the laboratory, the organoleptic parameters of the reconstituted syrups have not changed. They were mold free, the density remained around 1 and the pH between 5 and 4. These parameters have shown that the quality of plants powders and these medicine comply with the recommendations of the European pharmacopoeia. Faca syrup may contribute to the better management of sickle cell disease in children.
