Abstract This paper studies multigenerational health transmission mechanisms in Australian panel data. Using inequality-of-opportunity (IOP) models, we demonstrate that grandparental socioeconomic status (SES) is an important determinant of personal health, even after controlling for health and SES at the parental level. Our findings hold over a range of health/biomarkers of individuals’ physical and mental well-being and appear to be especially sensitive to educational outcomes on the father’s side. Since ingrained socioeconomic (dis)advantages that persist over multiple generations may be indicative of social class, our results suggest that subtle attitudinal and behavioural characteristics associated with this variable may be a key factor driving health disparities.

Abstract India is pioneer in constructing the social account matrices for its economy for various years, but limited efforts have been made to construct a SAM for India with detailed description about types labour input employed in various economic activities and subsequently the distribution of labour income across various households groups. To bridge this gap, we have constructed a 78-sector SAM for India which takes into account 48 types of labour input for economic activities and 80 types of households classes in India. Integrating the existing input–output database of the year 2007–2008, a 78-sector SAM of the year 2007–2008 and unit-level data published by National Sample Survey Office of India. This SAM differs from the existing 78-sector SAM in terms of its sectoral classification and especially the level of disaggregation of value-added and households account. Further, in this study we have illustrated some applicability of this SAM in analysing income inequality across various social groups of households in India and their contribution to the national income of India. It is observed from this SAM that the rural other social category of households constituted 17% of total population in India and contributed 13% of its net national income, whereas the special social category households of rural areas (SC, ST and OBC) contributed significantly lower in India’s NNP than their share in population. Hence, these categories of households in rural India remain unproductive than the other social category of households. Contrary to this fact, the urban counterparts of these social groups of households are more productive in India. We have also estimated the Gini coefficients corresponding to each social group of households as a measure of level of income inequality. Further, the SAM multiplier model has been applied to observe the impact of agricultural growth on rural income and income equality. The estimated Gini coefficients revealed the facts that the growth in paddy crops will lead to high increase with low income inequality among the SC and ST households, whereas for the OBC and other category households the same phenomena is observed corresponding to livestock sector.

In some developing countries, tourism-led growth strategy has been used to accelerate growth, generate employment opportunities and increase foreign exchange earnings. To maximise benefits from the tourism industry, appropriate policy decisions, infrastructure development and conducive business environments need to be developed. For that, accurate forecasting of international arrivals is vital. Tourism has been identified, as a driving force of post-war economic development in Sri Lanka. The main purpose of this study is to develop accurate forecasting models for total international arrivals in Sri Lanka and its top 10 source countries using SARIMA method. Monthly data from January 1984 to December 2016 were used as the training sample and data from January 2017 to December 2017 were used to evaluate the accuracy of the selected models. Results demonstrate that (a) achieving Sri Lankan Government’s forecast of four million tourist arrivals by 2020 is highly unlikely, (b) accurate forecasting is necessary for tourism strategies and planning, and (c) the SARIMA method provides accurate forecasts in the presence of seasonality. Finally, the findings in this study will be useful for government agencies and private establishments in the industry in their policymaking, designing promotional campaigns, and planning infrastructure.

Foreign aid and migrant remittances are major sources of external finance for developing countries, but there is little research into whether they are interlinked. In the existing literature, only a few studies have examined the nexus between these two financial flows and their conclusions have been mixed. This study, using recent data (1980–2016) from 50 aid-recipient countries, empirically analyses the relationship between foreign aid and remittances. Applying dynamic panel estimation techniques, we find a negative relationship between foreign aid and remittances. Further investigation of the transmission channels reveals that foreign aid, by broadening human capital through its robust effects on education, increases remittance flows. The human capital led growth channel is found to be effective in all countries (and sub-groups), while the migration channel of aid significantly favours remittances only in the LDCs. Though aid substitutes remittances generally, it also increases remittances indirectly through different transmission channels.

The $\Lambda_c^+$ baryon mass is measured using $\Lambda_c^+\to\Lambda K^0_S K^+$ and $\Lambda_c^+\to\Sigma^0 K^0_S K^+$ decays reconstructed in 232 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ storage ring. The $\Lambda_c^+$ mass is measured to be $2286.46\pm0.14\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$. The dominant systematic uncertainties arise from the amount of material in the tracking volume and from the magnetic field strength., Comment: 14 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Despite of significant growth in all walks of life, the issue of infant mortality still a major concern in most of the developing economies. The World Development Indicators have reported that 4.45 million infants died across the globe in 2015, meaning that 32 deaths per every 1,000 live births. A number of times, the World Health Organization (WHO) have stressed the significance of sanitation, safe drinking water and healthcare facilities in reducing infant mortality rate, though most developing countries still lacks in these services. Given this background, the present study aims to examine the role of sanitation, water facilities and health expenditure on infant mortality rate across a panel of 84 developing economies using annual data from 1995 to 2013. The study also account for per capita income and depth of food deficiency as the control factors in the model. The findings of this study establish a significant long‐run equilibrium association among the variables. The long‐run elasticities on infant mortality suggest that improved water and sanitation facilities, health expenditure and per capita income substantially reduce infant mortality rate, while food deficiency increases. Given these findings, we suggest that increasing access to improved water, sanitation and healthcare facilities will significantly reduce child mortality in developing economies around the world.

We present results from an analysis of B0(B¯¯¯0)→ρ+ρ− using 232×106 Υ(4S)→BB¯¯¯ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. We measure the longitudinal polarization fraction fL=0.978±0.014(stat)+0.021−0.029(syst) and the CP-violating parameters SL=−0.33±0.24(stat)+0.08−0.14(syst) and CL=−0.03±0.18(stat)±0.09(syst). Using an isospin analysis of B→ρρ decays, we determine the unitarity triangle parameter α. The solution compatible with the standard model is α=(100±13)°.

- Abstract
Queue length estimation is imperative as a tool of designing traffic characteristics of an intersection while queue length prediction enables to identify the traffic congestion in advance. This study was aimed to estimate the queue length at signalized intersections having heterogeneous traffic conditions. Furthermore, the study predicts the vehicle queue length of a different intersection with using the estimation results. Therefore, two case studies were conducted in two locations for the queue estimation and queue prediction respectively. The queue estimation study was conducted in a signalized pedestrian crossing in Malabe, Sri Lanka and the queue prediction in a signalized intersection in Armour Street, Sri Lanka where the vehicle density reflected the intense heterogeneity. Heterogeneous traffic conditions were defined as the diversified vehicle composition. The heterogeneity was assimilated with the consideration of Passenger Car Units (PCU) in the measurements of the traffic flow. The influential factors of the queue length were contemplated with the arrival flow, discharge flow and the signal configuration. The time-series analysis integrated the unrestricted Vector Auto Regression (VAR) models as the queue length and the other considered variables which depends on the time. Moreover, the results have indicated a higher accuracy in the queue estimation, practically applied for the prediction constituting to the traffic characteristics of the formed vehicle queue. We study the effects of inherited socioeconomic characteristics on markers of unhealthy bodyweight. Taking Australian microdata from 2007 to 2013, we show that approximately 4% of the variation in outcomes is determined by factors beyond an individual's control, such as their race, gender, and social class. Paternal socioeconomic status is the primary explanatory factor, with those born to more affluent fathers slightly less likely to be overweight in adulthood. Decompositions reveal that only 20%-25% of this effect is attributable to advantaged families exhibiting better health behaviors, which implies that unobserved factors also play an important role. Since diseases associated with unhealthy weight place a major strain on public healthcare systems, our results have implications for the provision of treatment when resources are constrained.

Purpose There is a large body of literature on the link between trade liberalisation, growth and poverty. However, less attention has been paid to the relationship between trade and regional disparities. The purpose of this paper is to identify and quantify the regional impacts of trade liberalisation, particularly in the war-affected regions and to understand to what extent trade reforms can contribute to the post-war recovery process and long-term economic and political stability in Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach The authors developed a single country multi-regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) model for the Sri Lankan economy to meet the need for a detailed country study as emphasised in the recent literature. Findings Both short-run and long-run results suggest that all regions including war-affected regions in the country gain from trade liberalisation, although gains are uneven across regions. Furthermore, the results suggest that war-affected regions gain more relative to some other regions in the long run. Originality/value According to the best of the authors’ knowledge within country regional impact of trade liberalisation using a multi-regional CGE model has never been attempted for Sri Lanka. The results of this study, even though based on Sri Lankan data, will be relevant to other developing countries engulfed in internal conflicts with regional economic disparities.

The impact of climate change on agriculture has been one of the most discussed topics in the literature on climate change. Multi-regional computable general equilibrium (CGE) models have frequently been used to examine the impact of climate change on agriculture. However, these studies do not focus on country-specific issues related to the link between climate change and agriculture. This paper aims to address this gap by investigating the economy-wide impacts of climate change on Nepalese agriculture. Nepal makes an interesting case study as it has one of the most vulnerable agricultural economies in South Asia. This paper develops a comparative static multi-household CGE model to trace the direct and indirect impacts of climate change in Nepal. The results suggest that climate change has a significant negative impact on the overall Nepalese economy due to the induced loss of agricultural productivity. The results further reveal that rural households in Nepal, whose livelihoods primarily depend on subsistence farming, will face additional climate change–induced stresses due to already overstrained poverty and a weak social welfare system. The results indicate an urgent need to mainstream adaptation strategies to lessen the negative impacts of any climate change–induced loss of agricultural productivity in Nepal.

This paper revisits the long standing controversy of trade and poverty linkage using a macro-micro modelling approach based on general equilibrium and microsimulation analytical frameworks. Sri Lanka, the first country in South Asia which undertook trade reforms more than three decades ago, is taken as a case in point in this study. The paper analyses the effects of trade liberalisation on income distribution and poverty in the urban, rural and estate sectors in Sri Lanka using the first ever microsimulation model built for the country in combination with a multi-household computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The results reveal that without any fiscal policy adjustments a 100% tariff cut would lead to an increase in economic growth and a reduction in poverty incidence both in the short run as well as in the long run. However, when the tariff cut combined with the fiscal policy adjustments to maintain the budget neutrality, poverty outcomes showed mixed results. In contrast, results show that trade liberalisation increases the income inequality in Sri Lanka.

Developing countries emerging from protracted civil wars and conflicts very often experience post-conflict tourism booms. Sri Lanka is no exception. The end of conflict has offered new opportunities, particularly in the tourism sector. In order to make use of these new opportunities, the previous government launched the “Tourism Development Strategy 2011–2016” by recognizing the key role of tourism that tourism can play in post-conflict development. It has been followed up by the current government of Sri Lanka by launching its own “Sri Lanka Tourism Strategic Plan 2017–2020”. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the nature of the post-conflict tourism boom and explore new opportunities that have emerged in terms of creating employment opportunities and reducing regional disparities. Furthermore, the chapter attempts to examine the impact of the tourism boom on the overall economy and to highlight how Sri Lanka has given priority to developing the tourism sector and positioning it as a key growth pillar in the economy. This chapter also demonstrates that tourism is not a “silver bullet” in addressing all economic ills in the Sri Lankan economy, despite the optimism about the development of the tourism sector to create further opportunities. The use of tourism as a tool to stimulate the economy should be synchronized with a raft of other policies such as improved transport infrastructure facilities, sound macroeconomic management, eliminating corruption and inefficiencies in government institutions, and reducing barriers to trade and FDI.

Agriculture is a sector vulnerable to climate change. The potential decline of crop yields from this vulnerability has important policy implications for food security in South Asia. In this study an integrated assessment modelling framework is proposed to link a global economic model with global climate models via an econometric model of crop productivity. It is then used to examine the impact of climate change on food security in individual South Asian countries by exploring the interaction between climate-induced productivity change and changes in food production and food prices. The results of our simulations suggest that unfavourable climate change can reduce food production significantly from the historical trend and create upward pressure on food prices. This, in turn, will have serious adverse impacts on food security in the South Asian region. We present an integrated model of food security in South Asia under climate change. We link a CGE model with climate models via an econometric model of crop yields. We explore interactions among climate change, food production and food prices.Climate change is expected to have serious impacts on food security in South Asia.

This study analyses asymmetry in price transmission between wholesale and retail rice markets in Sri Lanka, using the threshold autoregressive model. We found that the wholesale and the retail rice markets in Sri Lanka are integrated, with price changes moving from the wholesale to the retail market. However, the price transmission process is asymmetric. In particular, price increases at the wholesale market transmit immediately to the retail market while price decreases transmit more slowly. Parameter stability test and follow-up analysis indicated that the price transmission process is asymmetric only during periods of price surges, suggesting that the rice market is not efficient during these periods.

To effectively implement the proposed United Nations development agenda beyond 2015, Governments will need to focus on reducing inequality in their national planning strategies. In order to provide an evidence base for such planning in the Sri Lankan context, a systematic and comprehensive analysis on regional inequality is required. The present study begins to undertake this type of analysis using summary sigma convergence statistics, such as the coefficient of variation, the Gini coefficient and mean deviation scores. Regional gross domestic product (GDP) per capita data for the period 1996 to 2011 reveal that inequality with respect to this welfare indicator is considerable. Analysis of trends, over this 16-year period, indicates that while some beta convergence has occurred since 2000, this convergence (both conditional and unconditional) is not statistically significant. Indeed, the results suggest that based on current trends, it will take 15 years to halve the current inequality and about 30 years to achieve a regionally balanced economy. In this context, well-planned regionally inclusive development strategies are needed in order for Sri Lanka to move forward, especially since the current levels of regional disparity are argued by some to have contributed to the civil unrest and conflict that led to a reduction in national economic development over the three decades to 2009.

In many developing countries, in addition to household income, there are a number of other socio-economic determinants of poverty. One such hidden socio-economic factor is alcohol consumption and some studies argue that there is a link between alcohol consumption and poverty. The main aim of this study is to measure the effects of alcohol consumption on the level of poverty in a systematic way. Using Sri Lanka as a case study, this article demonstrates that the consumption of various types of alcoholic beverages, particularly, the illegal beverages, has a significant positive association with the level of poverty. The findings of this study suggest that, in Sri Lanka, the consumption of illegal alcoholic beverages increases the likelihood of being in a poor household by 2–3%. The results of this study also find that households who are characterized as nonpoor but are just above the poverty line behave more like the poor rather than the nonpoor in terms of alcohol consumption. Some of the conclusio...

BABAR, the detector for the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e+e- B Factory operating at the upsilon 4S resonance, was designed to allow comprehensive studies of CP-violation in B-meson decays. Charged particle tracks are measured in a multi-layer silicon vertex tracker surrounded by a cylindrical wire drift chamber. Electromagentic showers from electrons and photons are detected in an array of CsI crystals located just inside the solenoidal coil of a superconducting magnet. Muons and neutral hadrons are identified by arrays of resistive plate chambers inserted into gaps in the steel flux return of the magnet. Charged hadrons are identified by dE/dx measurements in the tracking detectors and in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector surrounding the drift chamber. The trigger, data acquisition and data-monitoring systems, VME- and network-based, are controlled by custom-designed online software. Details of the layout and performance of the detector components and their associated electronics and software are presented., 118 pages, 94 figure files, to be published in Nucl. Inst. and Methods

The Australian per capita consumption of ruminant meat such as beef and lamb has declined over the last two decades. Over the same period, however, per capita consumption of non-ruminant meat such as chicken and pork has continued to increase. Furthermore, it is now observed that the human consumption of kangaroo meat is on the rise. This study investigates the implications of these changes in meat consumption patterns on Green House Gases (GHGs) emission mitigation in Australia using a Vector Auto Regression (VAR) forecasting approach. Our results suggest that the increase will continue in non-ruminant meat consumption and this will not only offset the decline in ruminant meat consumption, but will also raise the overall per capita meat consumption by approximately 1% annually. The per capita GHGs emissions will likely decrease by approximately 2.3% per annum, due to the inclusion of non-ruminant meat in Australian diets. The GHGs emissions can further be reduced if the average Australian consumer partially replaces ruminant meat with kangaroo meat.

South Asia has been identified as one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the impact of climate change. Empirical studies carried out in recent years using the partial equilibrium approach suggest that climate change-induced yield losses in agriculture are becoming a serious concern. In this study, we use a global dynamic computable general equilibrium model to examine the impact of changes in crop productivity due to climate change on food prices and food security in South Asia, focusing on five large countries in the region, namely, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Our results suggest that there is likely to be a significant negative impact on food production and prices in all South Asian countries due to climate change-induced agricultural productivity changes. The results further suggest that countries in this region are likely to face problems of food security given that nearly half of the world’s poor reside in this region and agriculture plays an important role in the gross domestic product (GDP) and employment generation in the region. The results support the need for policy analysts and policy makers in the region to develop climate change adaptation measures that address the likely negative consequences of climate change-induced agricultural productivity losses.

The ready-made garment industry plays an important role in Sri Lanka both in terms of export earnings and poverty alleviation through employment generation. Following the removal of GSP Plus by EU in 2010 on the basis of alleged human right violations by the Sri Lankan government during the last stage of the civil war in 2009 and after, it currently faces serious challenges in exporting to the EU, its major market. Given the important role of the ready-made garment industry in poverty alleviation through employment generation, the impact of removal of GSP plus on the poor is examined in this paper. The empirical results of this study demonstrate that poverty and income inequality are expected to be exacerbated in Sri Lanka as a result of the removal of GSP Plus by the EU using non-economic reasons such as human rights violation. The results are also relevant for the renewed emphasis on trade preferences as a potential instrument for the Millennium Development Goals and the debate on how trade preferences are to be designed to maximise their effectiveness in stimulating a manufacturing supply response.
