Search

The granulation of red supergiants (RSGs) in the Magellanic Clouds are systematically investigated by combining the latest RSGs samples and light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae. The present RSGs samples are firstly examined for foreground stars and possible misidentified sources, and the light curves are sequentially checked to remove the outliers by white noise and photometric quality. The Gaussian Process regression is used to model the granulation, and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo is applied to derive the granulation amplitude $\sigma$ and the period of the undamped oscillator $\rho$, as well as the damping timescale $\tau$. The dimensionless quality factor $Q$ is then calculated through $Q=\pi \tau/\rho$. RSGs around $Q = 1/\sqrt{2}$ are considered to have significant granulation signals and are used for further analysis. Combining granulation parameters with stellar parameters, robust scaling relations for the timescale $\rho$ are established, while the scaling relations for amplitude $\sigma$ are represented by a piecewise function, possibly related to the tendency of amplitudes in faint RSGs to converge towards a certain value. Comparing results between the SMC and LMC confirms that amplitudes and timescales become larger with metallicity. In examining the scaling relations between the two galaxies, it is found that $\rho$ is nearly independent of metallicity, whereas $\sigma$ is more significantly affected by metallicity. Modern surveys often deliver hundreds of thousands of stellar spectra at once, which are fit to spectral models to derive stellar parameters/labels. Therefore, the technique of Amortized Neural Posterior Estimation (ANPE) stands out as a suitable approach, which enables the inference of large number of targets as sub-linear/constant computational costs. Leveraging our new nbi software package, we train an ANPE model for the APOGEE survey and demonstrate its efficacy on both mock and real APOGEE stellar spectra. Unique to the nbi package is its out-of-the-box functionality on astronomical inverse problems with sequential data. As such, we have been able to acquire the trained model with minimal effort. We introduce an effective approach to handling the measurement noise properties inherent in spectral data, which utilizes the actual uncertainties in the observed data. This allows training data to resemble observed data, an aspect that is crucial for ANPE applications. Given the association of spectral data properties with the observing instrument, we discuss the utility of an ANPE "model zoo," where models are trained for specific instruments and distributed under the nbi framework to facilitate real-time stellar parameter inference., Comment: Accepted to ICML 2023 Workshop on Machine Learning for Astrophysics. 7 pages 3 figures

Although there are estimated to be 100 million isolated black holes (BHs) in the Milky Way, only one has been found so far, resulting in significant uncertainty about their properties. The Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey provides the only opportunity in the coming decades to grow this catalog by order(s) of magnitude. This can be achieved if 1) Roman's astrometric potential is fully realized in the observation strategy and software pipelines, 2) Roman's observational gaps of the Bulge are minimized, and 3) observations with ground-based facilities are taken of the Bulge to fill in gaps during non-Bulge seasons. A large sample of isolated BHs will enable a broad range of astrophysical questions to be answered, such as massive stellar evolution, origin of gravitational wave sources, supernova physics, and the growth of supermassive BHs, maximizing Roman's scientific return., Comment: 20 pages. We advocate for a Galactic center (GC) field to be added to the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey (GBTDS). The new field would yield high-cadence photometric and astrometric measurements of an unprecedented ${\sim}$3.3 million stars toward the GC. This would enable a wide range of science cases, such as finding star-compact object binaries that may ultimately merge as LISA-detectable gravitational wave sources, constraining the mass function of stars and compact objects in different environments, detecting populations of microlensing and transiting exoplanets, studying stellar flares and variability in young and old stars, and monitoring accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. In addition, high-precision proper motions and parallaxes would open a new window into the large-scale dynamics of stellar populations at the GC, yielding insights into the formation and evolution of galactic nuclei and their co-evolution with the growth of the supermassive black hole. We discuss the possible trade-offs between the notional GBTDS and the addition of a GC field with either an optimal or minimal cadence. Ultimately, the addition of a GC field to the GBTDS would dramatically increase the science return of Roman and provide a legacy dataset to study the mid-plane and innermost regions of our Galaxy., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures. We examine the properties of $\sim50,000$ rotational variables from the ASAS-SN survey using distances, stellar properties, and probes of binarity from $\textit{Gaia}$ DR3 and the SDSS APOGEE survey. They have high amplitudes and span a broader period range than previously studied $\textit{Kepler}$ rotators. We find they divide into three groups of main sequence stars (MS1, MS2s, MS2b) and four of giants (G1/3, G2, G4s, and G4b). MS1 stars are slowly rotating (10-30 days), likely single stars with a limited range of temperatures. MS2s stars are more rapidly rotating (days) single stars spanning the lower main sequence up to the Kraft break. There is a clear period gap (or minimum) between MS1 and MS2s, similar to that seen for lower temperatures in the $\textit{Kepler}$ samples. MS2b stars are tidally locked binaries with periods of days. G1/3 stars are heavily spotted, tidally locked RS CVn with periods of tens of days. G2 stars are less luminous, heavily spotted, tidally locked sub-subgiants with periods of $\sim10$ days. G4s stars have intermediate luminosities to G1/3 and G2, slow rotation periods (approaching 100 days) and are almost certainly all merger remnants. G4b stars have similar rotation periods and luminosities to G4s, but consist of sub-synchronously rotating binaries. We see no difference in indicators for the presence of very wide binary companions between any of these groups and control samples of photometric twin stars built for each group., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, submitted to MNRAS

WR 20a is the most massive close-in binary known in our Galaxy. It is composed of two $\approx$80 M$_\odot$ Wolf-Rayet stars with a short period of $\approx$3.7 days in the open cluster Westerlund 2. As such, WR 20a presents us with a unique laboratory for studying the currently uncertain physics of binary evolution and compact object formation as well as for studying the wind collision region in an massive eclipsing binary system. We use deep Chandra observations of WR 20a to study the time variability of the wind collision region between the two Wolf-Rayet stars and are able to produce an X-ray light curve covering $\approx$2/3 of its orbital period. We find that the X-ray light curve is asymmetric because the flux of one peak is 2.5$\sigma$ larger than the flux of the other peak. This asymmetry could be caused by asymmetric mass-loss from the two stars or by the lopsidedness of the wind collision region due to the unusually fast rotation of the system. The X-ray light curve is also shifted in phase space when compared to the optical light curves measured by TESS and ASAS-SN. Additionally, we explore the ultimate fate of this system by modeling the resultant binary black hole merger expected at the end of the two stars' lives. We report on the search for optical counterparts to IceCube neutrino alerts released between April 2016 and August 2021 with the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN). Despite the discovery of a diffuse astrophysical high-energy neutrino flux in 2013, the source of those neutrinos remains largely unknown. Since 2016, IceCube has published likely-astrophysical neutrinos as public realtime alerts. Through a combination of normal survey and triggered target-of-opportunity observations, ASAS-SN obtained images within 1 hour of the neutrino detection for 20% (11) of all observable IceCube alerts and within one day for another 57% (32). For all observable alerts, we obtained images within at least two weeks from the neutrino alert. ASAS-SN provides the only optical follow-up for about 17% of IceCube's neutrino alerts. We recover the two previously claimed counterparts to neutrino alerts, the flaring-blazar TXS 0506+056 and the tidal disruption event AT2019dsg. We investigate the light curves of previously-detected transients in the alert footprints, but do not identify any further candidate neutrino sources. We also analysed the optical light curves of Fermi 4FGL sources coincident with high-energy neutrino alerts, but do not identify any contemporaneous flaring activity. Finally, we derive constraints on the luminosity functions of neutrino sources for a range of assumed evolution models.

We analyze two binary systems containing giant stars, V723 Mon ("the Unicorn") and 2M04123153+6738486 ("the Giraffe"). Both giants orbit more massive but less luminous companions, previously proposed to be mass-gap black holes. Spectral disentangling reveals luminous companions with star-like spectra in both systems. Joint modeling of the spectra, light curves, and spectral energy distributions robustly constrains the masses, temperatures, and radii of both components: the primaries are luminous, cool giants ($T_{\rm eff,\,giant} = 3,800\,\rm K$ and $4,000\,\rm K$, $R_{\rm giant}= 22.5\,R_{\odot}$ and $25\,R_{\odot}$) with exceptionally low masses ($M_{\rm giant} \approx 0.4\,M_{\odot}$) that likely fill their Roche lobes. The secondaries are only slightly warmer subgiants ($T_{\rm eff,\,2} = 5,800\,\rm K$ and $5,150\,\rm K$, $R_2= 8.3\,R_{\odot}$ and $9\,R_{\odot}$) and thus are consistent with observed UV limits that would rule out main-sequence stars with similar masses ($M_2 \approx 2.8\,M_{\odot}$ and $\approx 1.8\,M_{\odot}$). In the Unicorn, rapid rotation blurs the spectral lines of the subgiant, making it challenging to detect even at wavelengths where it dominates the total light. Both giants have surface abundances indicative of CNO processing and subsequent envelope stripping. The properties of both systems can be reproduced by binary evolution models in which a $1-2\,M_{\odot}$ primary is stripped by a companion as it ascends the giant branch. The fact that the companions are also evolved implies either that the initial mass ratio was very near unity, or that the companions are temporarily inflated due to rapid accretion. The Unicorn and Giraffe offer a window into into a rarely-observed phase of binary evolution preceding the formation of wide-orbit helium white dwarfs, and eventually, compact binaries containing two helium white dwarfs., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures. Motivated by recent suggestions that many Be stars form through binary mass transfer, we searched the APOGEE survey for Be stars with bloated, stripped companions. From a well-defined parent sample of 297 Be stars, we identified one mass-transfer binary, HD 15124. The object consists of a main-sequence Be star ($M_{\rm Be}=5.3\pm 0.6 \,M_{\odot}$) with a low-mass ($M_{\rm donor}=0.92\pm 0.22\,M_{\odot}$), subgiant companion on a 5.47-day orbit. The emission lines originate in an accretion disk caused by ongoing mass transfer, not from a decretion disk as in classical Be stars. Both stars have surface abundances bearing imprint of CNO processing in the donor's core: the surface helium fraction is $Y_{\rm He}\approx 0.6$, and the nitrogen-to-carbon ratio is 1000 times the solar value. The system's properties are well-matched by binary evolution models in which mass transfer begins while a $3-5\,M_{\odot}$ donor leaves the main sequence, with the secondary becoming the Be star. These models predict that the system will soon become a detached Be + stripped star binary like HR 6819 and LB-1, with the stripped donor eventually contracting to become a core helium-burning sdOB star. Discovery of one object in this short-lived ($\sim$1 Myr) evolutionary phase implies the existence of many more that have already passed through it and are now Be + sdOB binaries. We infer that $(28_{-16}^{+27})\,\%$ of Be stars have stripped companions, most of which are faint. Together with the dearth of main-sequence companions to Be stars and recent discovery of numerous Be + sdOB binaries in the UV, our results imply that binarity plays an important role in the formation of Be stars., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures, accepted to MNRAS

This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. Yellowballs (YBs) were first discovered during the Milky Way Project citizen-science initiative (MWP; Simpson et al. 2012). MWP users noticed compact, yellow regions in Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared (MIR) images of the Milky Way plane and asked professional astronomers to explain these "yellow balls." Follow-up work by Kerton et al. (2015) determined that YBs likely trace compact photo-dissociation regions associated with massive and intermediate-mass star formation. YBs were included as target objects in a version of the Milky Way Project launched in 2016 (Jayasinghe et al. 2016), which produced a listing of over 6000 YB locations. We have measured distances, cross-match associations, physical properties, and MIR colors of ~500 YBs within a pilot region covering the l= 30 - 40 degrees, b= +/- 1 degree region of the Galactic plane. We find 20-30% of YBs in our pilot region contain high-mass star formation capable of becoming expanding H II regions that produce MIR bubbles. A majority of YBs represent intermediate-mass star-forming regions whose placement in evolutionary diagrams suggest they are still actively accreting, and may be precursors to optically-revealed Herbig Ae/Be nebulae. Many of these intermediate-mass YBs were missed by surveys of massive star-formation tracers and thus this catalog provides information for many new sites of star formation. The unprecedented sky coverage and observing cadence of the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) has resulted in the discovery and continued monitoring of a large sample of Galactic transients. The vast majority of these are accretion-powered dwarf nova outbursts in cataclysmic variable systems, but a small subset are thermonuclear-powered classical novae. Despite improved monitoring of the Galaxy for novae from ASAS-SN and other surveys, the observed Galactic nova rate is still lower than predictions. One way classical novae could be missed is if they are confused with the much larger population of dwarf novae. Here, we examine the properties of 1617 dwarf nova outbursts detected by ASAS-SN and compare them to classical novae. We find that the mean classical nova brightens by ~11 magnitudes during outburst, while the mean dwarf nova brightens by only ~5 magnitudes, with the outburst amplitude distributions overlapping by roughly 15%. For the first time, we show that the amplitude of an outburst and the time it takes to decline by two magnitudes from maximum are positively correlated for dwarf nova outbursts. For classical novae, we find that these quantities are negatively correlated, but only weakly, compared to the strong anti-correlation of these quantities found in some previous work. We show that, even if located at large distances, only a small number of putative dwarf novae could be mis-classified classical novae suggesting that there is minimal confusion between these populations. van den Heuvel & Tauris argue that if the red giant star in the system 2MASS J05215658+4359220 has a mass of 1 solar mass (M$_\odot$), then its unseen companion could be a binary composed of two 0.9 M$_\odot$ stars, making a triple system. We contend that the existing data are most consistent with a giant of mass $3.2^{+1.0}_{-1.0}$ M$_\odot$, implying a black hole companion of $3.3^{+2.8}_{-0.7}$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 5 pages

We analyzed the light curves of 1376 early-to-late, nearby M dwarfs to search for white-light flares using photometry from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We identified 480 M dwarfs with at least one potential flare employing a simple statistical algorithm that searches for sudden increases in $V$-band flux. After more detailed evaluation, we identified 62 individual flares on 62 stars. The event amplitudes range from $0.12 <\Delta V < 2.04$ mag. Using classical-flare models, we place lower limits on the flare energies and obtain $V$-band energies spanning $2.0\times10^{30} \lesssim E_{V} \lesssim 6.9\times10^{35}$ erg. The fraction of flaring stars increases with spectral type, and most flaring stars show moderate to strong H$\alpha$ emission. Additionally, we find that 14 of the 62 flaring stars are rotational variables, and they have shorter rotation periods and stronger H$\alpha$ emission than non-flaring rotational variable M dwarfs., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 7 tables, submitted to the AAS Journals

We present the discovery of KELT-24 b, a massive hot Jupiter orbiting a bright (V=8.3 mag, K=7.2 mag) young F-star with a period of 5.6 days. The host star, KELT-24 (HD 93148), has a $T_{\rm eff}$ =$6509^{+50}_{-49}$ K, a mass of $M_{*}$ = $1.460^{+0.055}_{-0.059}$ $M_{\odot}$, radius of $R_{*}$ = $1.506\pm0.022$ $R_{\odot}$, and an age of $0.78^{+0.61}_{-0.42}$ Gyr. Its planetary companion (KELT-24 b) has a radius of $R_{\rm P}$ = $1.272\pm0.021$ $R_{\rm J}$, a mass of $M_{\rm P}$ = $5.18^{+0.21}_{-0.22}$ $M_{\rm J}$, and from Doppler tomographic observations, we find that the planet's orbit is well-aligned to its host star's projected spin axis ($\lambda$ = $2.6^{+5.1}_{-3.6}$). The young age estimated for KELT-24 suggests that it only recently started to evolve from the zero-age main sequence. KELT-24 is the brightest star known to host a transiting giant planet with a period between 5 and 10 days. Although the circularization timescale is much longer than the age of the system, we do not detect a large eccentricity or significant misalignment that is expected from dynamical migration. The brightness of its host star and its moderate surface gravity make KELT-24b an intriguing target for detailed atmospheric characterization through spectroscopic emission measurements since it would bridge the current literature results that have primarily focused on lower mass hot Jupiters and a few brown dwarfs., Comment: 18 pages, 10 Figures, 6 Tables, Accepted to the Astronomical Journal

Citizen science has helped astronomers comb through large data sets to identify patterns and objects that are not easily found through automated processes. The Milky Way Project (MWP), a citizen science initiative on the Zooniverse platform, presents internet users with infrared (IR) images from Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic plane surveys. MWP volunteers make classification drawings on the images to identify targeted classes of astronomical objects. We present the MWP second data release (DR2) and an updated data reduction pipeline written in Python. We aggregate ${\sim}3$ million classifications made by MWP volunteers during the years 2012-2017 to produce the DR2 catalogue, which contains 2600 IR bubbles and 599 candidate bow-shock driving stars. The reliability of bubble identifications, as assessed by comparison to visual identifications by trained experts and scoring by a machine-learning algorithm, is found to be a significant improvement over DR1. We assess the reliability of IR bow shocks via comparison to expert identifications and the colours of candidate bow-shock driving stars in the 2MASS point-source catalogue. We hence identify highly-reliable subsets of 1394 DR2 bubbles and 453 bow-shock driving stars. Uncertainties on object coordinates and bubble size/shape parameters are included in the DR2 catalog. Compared with DR1, the DR2 bubbles catalogue provides more accurate shapes and sizes. The DR2 catalogue identifies 311 new bow shock driving star candidates, including three associated with the giant HII regions NGC 3603 and RCW 49., Comment: 27 pages, 29 figures. Accepted to MNRAS. We report the discovery of the first likely black hole in a non-interacting binary system with a field red giant. By combining radial velocity measurements from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) with photometric variability data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), we identified the bright rapidly-rotating giant 2MASS J05215658+4359220 as a binary system with a massive unseen companion. Subsequent radial velocity measurements reveal a system with an orbital period of 83 days and near-zero eccentricity. The photometric variability period of the giant is consistent with the orbital period, indicative of star spots and tidal synchronization. Constraints on the giant's mass and radius from its luminosity, surface gravity, and temperature imply an unseen companion with mass of $3.3^{+2.8}_{-0.7}$ M$_\odot$, indicating a low-mass black hole or an exceedingly massive neutron star. Measurement of the astrometric binary motion by {\it Gaia} will further characterize the system. This discovery demonstrates the potential of massive spectroscopic surveys like APOGEE and all-sky, high-cadence photometric surveys like ASAS-SN to revolutionize our understanding of the compact object mass function, and to test theories of binary star evolution and the supernova mechanism., Comment: Submitted. 57 pages, 12 figures; main text and supplementary material updated

We report and characterize a white-light superflare on a previously undiscovered M dwarf detected by the ASAS-SN survey. Employing various color-magnitude and color-spectral type relationships, we estimate several stellar parameters, including the quiescent V-band magnitude, from which we derive a flare amplitude of $\Delta V \sim 10$. We determine an r-band absolute magnitude of $M_{r} = 11.4$, consistent with a mid-M dwarf, and an approximate distance to the source of $2.2$ kpc. Using classical-flare models, we infer a flare energy of $E_{V} \simeq (4.1\pm 2.2)\times 10^{36}$ ergs, making this one of the strongest flares documented on an M dwarf., Comment: 3 pages, 1 table.
