1. A Control Framework for CUBESAT Rendezvous and Proximity Operations using Electric Propulsion

Abstract

A control framework is presented to solve the rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) problem of the EP-Gemini mission. In this mission, a CubeSat chaser is controlled to approach and circumnavigate the other uncooperative CubeSat target. Such a problem is challenging because the chaser operates on a single electric propulsion thruster, for which coupling between attitude control and thrust vector, and charging of the electric propulsion system must be taken into consideration. In addition, the access to relative states in real time is not achievable due to the onboard hardware constraints of the two CubeSats. The developed control framework addresses these limitations by applying four modularized maneuver blocks to correct the chaser's mean orbit elements in sequence. The control framework is based on a relative motion called safety ellipse to ensure a low collision risk. The complete EP-Gemini mission is demonstrated by the implementation of the proposed control framework in a numerical simulation that includes high order perturbations for low Earth orbit. The simulation result shows that a safety ellipse is established after a 41-day RPO maneuver, which consumes 44$\%$ of the total fuel in terms of $\Delta V$. The resulting 3-dimensional safety ellipse circumnavigates the target with an approximate dimension of 14 km $\times$ 27 km $\times$ 8 km.

7. Density Estimation for Entry Guidance Problems using Deep Learning

Abstract

This work presents a deep-learning approach to estimate atmospheric density profiles for use in planetary entry guidance problems. A long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is trained to learn the mapping between measurements available onboard an entry vehicle and the density profile through which it is flying. Measurements include the spherical state representation, Cartesian sensed acceleration components, and a surface-pressure measurement. Training data for the network is initially generated by performing a Monte Carlo analysis of an entry mission at Mars using the fully numerical predictor-corrector guidance (FNPEG) algorithm that utilizes an exponential density model, while the truth density profiles are sampled from MarsGRAM. A curriculum learning procedure is developed to refine the LSTM network's predictions for integration within the FNPEG algorithm. The trained LSTM is capable of both predicting the density profile through which the vehicle will fly and reconstructing the density profile through which it has already flown. The performance of the FNPEG algorithm is assessed for three different density estimation techniques: an exponential model, an exponential model augmented with a first-order fading-memory filter, and the LSTM network. Abstract

At Sandia National Laboratories, QSCOUT (the Quantum Scientific Computing Open User Testbed) is an ion-trap based quantum computer built for the purpose of allowing users low-level access to quantum hardware. Commands are executed on the hardware using Jaqal (Just Another Quantum Assembly Language), a programming language designed in-house to support the unique capabilities of QSCOUT. In this work, we describe a batching implementation of our custom software that speeds the experimental run-time through the reduction of communication and upload times. Reducing the code upload time during experimental runs improves system performance by mitigating the effects of drift. We demonstrate this implementation through a set of quantum chemistry experiments using a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE). While developed specifically for this testbed, this idea finds application across many similar experimental platforms that seek greater hardware control or reduced overhead., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. 16. Mass spectrometric investigations into 3D printed parts to assess radiopurity as ultralow background materials for rare event physics detectors

Abstract

New data are reported for polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), and two forms of polyetherimide (PEI, branded ULTEM 1010 and 9085). Data for starting filaments and both simple and complex printed parts are reported. PVDF filaments and simple printed beads, were found to have values of approximately 30 and 50 ppt for Th-232 and U-238, respectively, while a more complex spring clip part had slightly elevated Th-232 levels of 65 ppt, with U-238 remaining at 50 ppt. PPS filament was found to have concentrations of 270 and 710 ppt for Th-232 and U-238, respectively, and were not chosen to be printed as those levels were already higher than other material options. ULTEM 1010 filaments and printed complex spring clip parts were found to have concentrations of around 5 and 7 ppt for Th-232 and U-238, respectively, illustrating no significant contamination from the printing process. ULTEM 9085 filaments were found to have concentrations of around 9 and 5 ppt for Th-232 and U-238, respectively, while the printed complex spring clip part was found to have slightly elevated concentrations of 25 and 7 ppt for Th-232 and U-238, respectively. These results were all obtained using a novel dry ashing method in crucibles constructed of ultralow background electroformed copper or, when applicable, microwave-assisted wet ashing digestion. Samples and process blanks were spiked with Th-229 and U-233 as internal standards prior to dry/wet ashing and determinations were made by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In order to maintain high radiopurity levels, pre-cleaning the filaments before printing and post-cleaning the parts is recommended, although the printing process itself has shown to contribute very minute amounts of radiocontaminants.

Abstract

Maximizing the discovery potential of increasingly precise neutrino experiments will require an improved theoretical understanding of neutrino-nucleus cross sections over a wide range of energies. Low-energy interactions are needed to reconstruct the energies of astrophysical neutrinos from supernovae bursts and search for new physics using increasingly precise measurement of coherent elastic neutrino scattering. Higher-energy interactions involve a variety of reaction mechanisms including quasi-elastic scattering, resonance production, and deep inelastic scattering that must all be included to reliably predict cross sections for energies relevant to DUNE and other accelerator neutrino experiments. This white paper discusses the theoretical status, challenges, required resources, and path forward for achieving precise predictions of neutrino-nucleus scattering and emphasizes the need for a coordinated theoretical effort involved lattice QCD, nuclear effective theories, phenomenological models of the transition region, and event generators., Comment: 81 pages, contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

A thorough understanding of neutrino-nucleus scattering physics is crucial for the successful execution of the entire US neutrino physics program. Neutrino-nucleus interaction constitutes one of the biggest systematic uncertainties in neutrino experiments - both at intermediate energies affecting long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), as well as at low energies affecting coherent scattering neutrino program - and could well be the difference between achieving or missing discovery level precision. To this end, electron-nucleus scattering experiments provide vital information to test, assess and validate different nuclear models and event generators intended to be used in neutrino experiments. In this white paper, we highlight connections between electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering physics at energies ranging from 10s of MeV to a few GeV, review the status of ongoing and planned electron scattering experiments, identify gaps, and layout a path forward that benefits the neutrino community. We also highlight the systemic challenges with respect to the divide between the nuclear and high-energy physics communities and funding that presents additional hurdle in mobilizing these connections to the benefit of neutrino programs., Comment: 37 pages, contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Simulating the dielectric spectra of solvents requires the nuanced definition of inter- and intra-molecular forces. Non-polarizable force fields, while thoroughly benchmarked for dielectric applications, do not capture all the spectral features of solvents, such as water. Conversely, polarizable force fields have been largely untested in the context of dielectric spectroscopy but include charge and dipole fluctuations that contribute to intermolecular interactions. We benchmark non-polarizable force fields and the polarizable force fields AMOEBA03 and HIPPO for liquid water and find that the polarizable force fields can capture all the experimentally observed spectral features with varying degrees of accuracy. However, the non-polarizable force fields miss at least one peak. To diagnose this deficiency, we decompose the liquid water spectra from polarizable force fields at multiple temperatures into static and induced dipole contributions and find that the peak originates from induced dipole contributions. Broadening our inquiry to other solvents parameterized with the AMOEBA09 force field, we demonstrate good agreement between the experimental and simulated dielectric spectra of methanol and formamide. To produce these spectra, we develop a new computational approach to calculate the dielectric spectrum via the fluctuation dissipation theorem. This method minimizes the error in both the low and high frequency portions of the spectrum, improving the overall accuracy of the simulated spectrum and broadening the computed frequency range. Abstract

Rap1 GTPase drives assembly of the Mig-10/RIAM/Lamellipodin (MRL protein)-integrin-talin (MIT) complex that enables integrin-dependent lymphocyte functions. Here we used tandem affinity tag-based proteomics to isolate and analyze the MIT complex and reveal that Phostensin (Ptsn), a regulatory subunit of protein phosphatase 1, is a component of the complex. Ptsn mediates dephosphorylation of Rap1, thereby preserving the activity and membrane localization of Rap1 to stabilize the MIT complex. CRISPR/Cas9-induced deletion of PPP1R18, which encodes Ptsn, markedly suppresses integrin activation in Jurkat human T cells. We generated apparently healthy Ppp1r18-/- mice that manifest lymphocytosis and reduced population of peripheral lymphoid tissues ascribable, in part, to defective activation of integrins αLβ2 and α4β7. Ppp1r18-/- T cells exhibit reduced capacity to induce colitis in a murine adoptive transfer model. Thus, Ptsn enables lymphocyte integrin-mediated functions by dephosphorylating Rap1 to stabilize the MIT complex. As a consequence, loss of Ptsn ameliorates T cell-mediated colitis.

28. A Polarizable Water Potential Derived from a Model Electron Density

Abstract

A new empirical potential for efficient, large scale molecular dynamics simulation of water is presented. The HIPPO (Hydrogen-like Intermolecular Polarizable POtential) force field is based upon the model electron density of a hydrogen-like atom. This framework is used to derive and parameterize individual terms describing charge penetration damped permanent electrostatics, damped polarization, charge transfer, anisotropic Pauli repulsion, and damped dispersion interactions. Initial parameter values were fit to Symmetry Adapted Perturbation Theory (SAPT) energy components for ten water dimer configurations, as well as the radial and angular dependence of the canonical dimer. The SAPT-based parameters were then systematically refined to extend the treatment to water bulk phases. The final HIPPO water model provides a balanced representation of a wide variety of properties of gas phase clusters, liquid water and ice polymorphs, across a range of temperatures and pressures. This water potential yields a rationalization of water structure, dynamics and thermodynamics explicitly correlated with an ab initio energy decomposition, while providing a level of accuracy comparable or superior to previous polarizable atomic multipole force fields. Abstract

Silvicultural thinning can lead to rapid microclimatic changes for residual trees. Despite the benefits of decreased competition, thinning may induce 'thinning shock'--temporary negative physiological responses as trees acclimate to new conditions. We examined the impact of thinning on the microclimate and physiology of residual, previously shaded red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) trees relative to non-thinned controls. Both daily maximum temperature and vapor pressure deficit increased post thinning, with larger increases observed on hotter and drier days. In response to these environmental changes, we found clear evidence of physiological declines. At 1.7 weeks post thinning, we found a 0.59 MPa reduction in average midday water potential relative to control trees, which lasted for an additional 1.4 weeks. Thus, the trees in the thinning treatment were at or beyond published estimates of needle turgor loss. Thinning decreased the photosynthetic efficiency of current-year needles by 3.8% after 2 weeks, and it declined by 1.3% per week for the remainder of the growing season. These results suggest that thinning shock occurs in red spruce, a shade-adapted, climate-sensitive species. Thinning shock may contribute to the lagged growth responses commonly observed post thinning, and these effects may be more extreme in novel future climates. Force Field X (FFX) is an open-source software package for atomic resolution modeling of genetic variants and organic crystals that leverages advanced potential energy functions and experimental data. FFX currently consists of nine modular packages with novel algorithms that include global optimization via a many-body expansion, acid–base chemistry using polarizable constant-pH molecular dynamics, estimation of free energy differences, generalized Kirkwood implicit solvent models, and many more. Applications of FFX focus on the use and development of a crystal structure prediction pipeline, biomolecular structure refinement against experimental datasets, and estimation of the thermodynamic effects of genetic variants on both proteins and nucleic acids. The use of Parallel Java and OpenMM combines to offer shared memory, message passing, and graphics processing unit parallelization for high performance simulations. 34. Beyond isotropic repulsion: Classical anisotropic repulsion by inclusion of p orbitals.

Abstract

Accurate modeling of intermolecular repulsion is an integral component in force field development. Although repulsion can be explicitly calculated by applying the Pauli exclusion principle, this approach is computationally viable only for systems of limited sizes. Instead, it has previously been shown that repulsion can be reformulated in a "classical" picture: the Pauli exclusion principle prohibits electrons from occupying the same state, leading to a depletion of electronic charge between atoms, giving rise to an enhanced nuclear–nuclear electrostatic repulsion. This classical picture is called the isotropic S2/R approximation, where S is the overlap and R is the interatomic distance. This approximation accurately captures the repulsion of isotropic atoms such as noble gas dimers; however, a key deficiency is that it fails to capture the angular dependence of the repulsion of anisotropic molecules. To include directionality, the wave function must at least be a linear combination of s and p orbitals. We derive a new anisotropic S2/R repulsion model through the inclusion of the anisotropic p orbital term in the total wave function. Because repulsion is pairwise and decays rapidly, it can be truncated at a short range, making it amenable for efficient calculation of energy and forces in complex biomolecular systems. We present a parameterization of the S101 dimer database against the ab initio benchmark symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, which yields an rms error of only 0.9 kcal/mol. The importance of the anisotropic term is demonstrated through angular scans of water–water dimers and dimers involving halobenzene. Abstract

We present the extension of the Tinker-HP package (Lagard\`ere et al., Chem. Sci., 2018,9, 956-972) to the use of Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) cards to accelerate molecular dynamics simulations using polarizable many-body force fields. The new high-performance module allows for an efficient use of single- and multi-GPU architectures ranging from research laboratories to modern supercomputer centers. After detailing an analysis of our general scalable strategy that relies on OpenACC and CUDA, we discuss the various capabilities of the package. Among them, the multi-precision possibilities of the code are discussed. If an efficient double precision implementation is provided to preserve the possibility of fast reference computations, we show that a lower precision arithmetic is preferred providing a similar accuracy for molecular dynamics while exhibiting superior performances. As Tinker-HP is mainly dedicated to accelerate simulations using new generation point dipole polarizable force field, we focus our study on the implementation of the AMOEBA model. Testing various NVIDIA platforms including 2080Ti, 3090, V100 and A100 cards, we provide illustrative benchmarks of the code for single- and multi-cards simulations on large biosystems encompassing up to millions of atoms. The new code strongly reduces time to solution and offers the best performances to date obtained using the AMOEBA polarizable force field. Perspectives toward the strong-scaling performance of our multi-node massive parallelization strategy, unsupervised adaptive sampling and large scale applicability of the Tinker-HP code in biophysics are discussed. Abstract

The mass concentrations of Th-232 and U-238 in several strong, unfilled, high performance polymers are reported as measures of their radiopurity. Highly radiopure polymers are required as dielectric materials in the construction of rare event physics detectors, in order to minimize background signals arising from the detector materials themselves. New data are reported for carefully sourced samples of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), a polyamide imide (PAI, branded as Torlon) and polybenzimidazole (PBI). Data for solid polyetherimide (PEI) are also discussed and new data for PEI in the form of a commercial 3D printing filament stock are reported. Strong high performance polymers PEKK, PBI, PAI and PEI were found with levels for Th-232 and U-238 that are below one milliBq/kg, including the PEI 3D printing filament. Specifically, for Th-232 and U-238 respectively, in microBq/kg, we found values of 149 and 184 for Arkema Kepstan PEKK 6002 flake; 69 and 2250 for Solvay Ketaspire PEEK flake; 346 and 291 for PBI Performance Products low metals grade 100 mesh PBI powder; 66 and 105 for Drake Plastics PAI Torlon T-4200 pellets; 401 and 285 for Drake Plastics cured PAI rod; 32 and 41 for Ensinger PEI Ultem 1000 solid; and 15 and 85 microBq/kg, for ThermaX PEI Ultem 1010 filament material. These results were all obtained using a novel dry ashing method in crucibles constructed of ultra low background (ULB) electroformed copper. Samples were spiked with T-229h and U-233 as internal standards prior to ashing and determinations were made by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Radiopurity is displayed graphically relative to numerical measures of mechanical strength for these and several other polymers.

Targeted light delivery into biological tissue is needed in applications such as optogenetic stimulation of the brain and in vivo functional or structural imaging of tissue. These applications require very compact, soft, and flexible implants that minimize damage to tissue. Here, we demonstrate a novel implantable photonic platform based on a high-density, flexible array of ultracompact (30 ${\mu}$m x 5 ${\mu}$m), low-loss (3.2 dB/cm at ${\lambda}$ = 680 nm, 4.1 dB/cm at ${\lambda}$ = 633 nm, 4.9 dB/cm at ${\lambda}$ = 532 nm, 6.1 dB/cm at ${\lambda}$ = 450 nm) optical waveguides made of biocompatible polymers Parylene C and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Abstract

Data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 were used to describe and compare postsecondary education enrollment patterns of first- and continuing-generation students. Social cognitive career theory was used to explain the processes of educational and career pursuit and attainment, as well as personal, behavioral, and contextual/environmental factors influencing these processes. Postsecondary educational self-efficacy (i.e., a belief or confidence in future educational success) had a significant positive influence on establishing higher postsecondary educational goals for all adolescents. Postsecondary educational self-efficacy and goals, together, also had a substantial positive influence on postsecondary enrollment patterns of both groups. Self-efficacy exerted a stronger total effect for first-generation students. Contextual supports and barriers directly influenced students' goals but played different roles depending on generational status.

Abstract

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to gauge the experiences of applicants and program directors (PDs) in the Medical Physics (MedPhys) Match (MPM) and to determine the most important characteristics and factors that influence decision-making for applicants and programs when screening, interviewing, and ranking in the MPM. Opinions were also solicited from applicants and PDs on the status of medical physics residencies and the selection process, such as the availability of residency positions and satisfaction with the match process.MethodsA survey was sent to all applicants registered for the 2015-2018 MPM and to all PDs registered for the 2015-2017 MPM. Survey questions asked about the pre-interview screening, interview, and ranking stages of the residency match process. Survey data were analyzed using graphical methods and spreadsheet tools.ResultsAn increasing percentage of applicants are female and/or hold a PhD as their highest degree. The over all number of interview invitations per applicant has increased, leading some applicants to decline interviews with the top reasons being cost of travel and scheduling conflicts. The top considerations for applicants in ranking programs were residency program/institution reputation, program structure/organization, and facilities/equipment available. The primary considerations identified by PDs for ranking applicants included impressions from the interview, personality fit, and clinical potential. While two-thirds of applicants agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that a residency position was difficult to obtain, roughly one-third of PDs agree that the current residency placement rate is a problem.ConclusionFour years of survey data on the experiences of applicants and PDs participating in the MPM is useful to future participants navigating the residency match system. It is hoped that the data will be helpful to inform improvements and to enhance understanding of the residency match system and how it shapes our profession.

49. Family Influences on Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy of Chinese Secondary Vocational Students

Abstract

Career decision-making self-efficacy is a pivotal construct in understanding individuals' career behaviors (Betz, 2007). Family, as a primary source of social support, exerts a substantial influence on adolescents' career development and decision-making process (Whiston & Keller, 2004). This study examined the role of selected family variables in predicting 587 Chinese secondary vocational students' career decision-making self-efficacy. Family "structural" variables that reflected family members' socioeconomic status and family "process-oriented" variables, especially, parental career-related behaviors, were examined. Results showed that parental general psychosocial support was a statistically significant factor in predicting career decision-making self-efficacy, explaining 38.3% of the variance of this construct for Chinese secondary vocational students.

Abstract

Inositol polyphosphate 1-phosphatase (INPP1) is a prototype member of metal-dependent/lithium-inhibited phosphomonoesterase protein family defined by a conserved three-dimensional core structure. Enzymes within this family function in distinct pathways including inositide signaling, gluconeogenesis, and sulfur assimilation. Using structural and biochemical studies, we report the effect of substrate and lithium on a network of metal binding sites within the catalytic center of INPP1. We find that lithium preferentially occupies a key site involved in metal-activation only when substrate or product is added. Mutation of a conserved residue that selectively coordinates the putative lithium-binding site results in a dramatic 100-fold reduction in the inhibitory constant as compared with wild-type. Furthermore, we report the INPP1/inositol 1,4-bisphosphate complex which illuminates key features of the enzyme active site. Our results provide insights into a structural basis for uncompetitive lithium inhibition and substrate recognition and define a sequence motif for metal binding within this family of regulatory phosphatases.
