Abstract

The power of computational modeling and simulation for establishing clear links between materials’ intrinsic properties and their atomic structure has more and more increased the demand for reliable and reproducible protocols. Despite this increased demand, no one approach can provide reliable and reproducible outcomes to predict the properties of novel materials, particularly rapidly cured epoxy-resins with additives. This study introduces the first computational modeling and simulation protocol for crosslinking rapidly cured epoxy resin thermosets based on solvate ionic liquid (SIL). The protocol combines several modeling approaches, including quantum mechanics (QMs) and molecular dynamics (MDs). Furthermore, it insightfully provides a wide range of thermo-mechanical, chemical, and mechano-chemical properties, which agree with experimental data.

Abstract

Several environmental and techno-economic assessments highlighted the advantage of placing polystyrene-based materials in a circular loop, from production to waste generation to product refabrication, either following the mechanical or thermochemical routes. This review provides an assortment of promising approaches to solving the dilemma of polystyrene waste. With a focus on upcycling technologies available in the last five years, the review first gives an overview of polystyrene, its chemistry, types, forms, and varied applications. This work presents all the stages that involve polystyrene’s cycle of life and the properties that make this product, in mixtures with other polymers, command a demand on the market. The features and mechanical performance of the studied materials with their associated images give an idea of the influence of recycling on the structure. Notably, technological assessments of elucidated approaches are also provided. No single approach can be mentioned as effective per se; hybrid technologies appear to possess the highest potential. Finally, this review correlates the amenability of these polystyrene upcycling methodologies to frontier technologies relating to 3D printing, human space habitation, flow chemistry, vertical farming, and green hydrogen, which may be less intuitive to many.

Abstract

Here we report on measurements of the spin-Seebeck effect of GaMnAs over an extended temperature range alongside the thermal conductivity, specific heat, magnetization, and thermoelectric power. The amplitude of the spin-Seebeck effect in GaMnAs scales with the thermal conductivity of the GaAs substrate and the phonon-drag contribution to the thermoelectric power of the GaMnAs, demonstrating that phonons drive the spin redistribution. Abstract

The spin-Seebeck effect was recently discovered in a metallic ferromagnet and consists of a thermally generated spin distribution that is electrically measured utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect. Here this effect is reproduced experimentally in a ferromagnetic semiconductor, GaMnAs, which allows for flexible design of the magnetization directions, a larger spin polarization, and measurements across the magnetic phase transition. The spin-Seebeck effect in GaMnAs is observed even in the absence of longitudinal charge transport. The spatial distribution of spin-currents is maintained across electrical breaks highlighting the local nature of the effect, which is therefore ascribed to a thermally induced spin redistribution., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, plus supporting information 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

12. Sustainable soil management in the United Kingdom:a survey of current practices and how they relate to the principles of regenerative agriculture

Abstract

Sustainable soil management is essential to prevent agricultural soil degradation and maintain food production and core soil-based ecosystem services. Regenerative agriculture, one approach to sustainable soil management, is rapidly gaining traction in UK farming and policy. However, it is unclear what farmers themselves consider to be sustainable soil management practices, and how these relate to the principles of regenerative agriculture. Further, there is little insight into how sustainable soil management is currently promoted in agricultural knowledge and innovation services (AKIS). To address these knowledge gaps, we undertook the first national-scale survey of sustainable soil management practices in the United Kingdom and complemented it with targeted interviews. We found high levels of awareness (>60%) and uptake (>30%) of most sustainable soil management practices among mixed and arable farmers. Importantly, 92% of respondents considered themselves to be practising sustainable soil management. However, our analysis shows that farmers combine practices in different ways. Not all these combinations correspond to the full set of regenerative agriculture principles of reduced soil disturbance, soil cover and crop diversity. To better understand the relationship between existing sustainable soil management practices in the United Kingdom and regenerative agriculture principles, we derive a “regenerative agriculture score” by allocating individual practices among the principles of regenerative agriculture. Farmers who self-report that they are managing soil sustainably tend to score more highly across all five principles. We further find that sustainable soil management messaging is fragmented and that few AKIS networks have sustainable soil management as their primary concern. Abstract

Within agri-food scholarship, longstanding debates have focused on the empirical applicability and conceptual utility of differing agricultural paradigms. These have often dovetailed with considerations around the future of agriculture in countries such as the UK given a shift in emphasis away from the central tenets of a high-input, yield-oriented productivism. Alternative diagnoses, particularly in notions of a post-productivist paradigm, have proven influential in capturing broad changes in the restructuring of agricultural activity. Whilst debates around the characterisation of these paradigms continue, they highlight distinct contestations in broader (and shifting) questions around what agriculture should be ‘for’, e.g. whether environmental ‘goods’ should be valued more highly than material production. Situating our paper within these ongoing debates, we draw on farmer perspectives in examining the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices in two farmer clusters in the East and South-West of England respectively. As a diverse array of practices which appear favourably positioned in a post-Brexit policy environment, we explore the ways in which regenerative agriculture can be understood as seeking to reconcile productivist and post-productivist tendencies. Drawing attention to the tensions, contradictions and uncertainties at play in these farmer perspectives, we highlight: the environmental and emotional appeal of regenerative agriculture compared to its adoption for more pragmatic (economic) reasons; the parallels and differences between regenerative agriculture and organic production; and the multiple sources of trusted information drawn upon by farmers in an uncertain policy environment. We conclude the paper by reflecting on the need to better contextualise and conceptualise contemporary interest in regenerative agriculture within longer theoretical lineages, in which the voice of farmers themselves must be central.

Abstract

The radical‐bearing epoxy monomer could be the ideal embodiment of multifunctionality in epoxy‐based materials. This study demonstrates the potential of macroradical epoxies as surface coating materials. A diepoxide monomer derivatized with a stable nitroxide radical is polymerized with a diamine hardener under the influence of a magnetic field. The magnetically oriented and stable radicals in the polymer backbone render the coatings antimicrobial. The unconventional use of magnets during polymerization proved crucial in correlating the structure‐property relationships with antimicrobial performance inferred from oscillatory rheological technique, polarized macro‐attenuated total reflectance – infrared (macro‐ATR‐IR) spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The magnetic thermal curing influenced the surface morphology, resulting in a synergy of the coating's radical nature with microbiostatic performance assessed using the Kirby‐Bauer test and liquid chromatography – mass spectroscopy (LC–MS). Further, the magnetic curing of blends with a traditional epoxy monomer demonstrates that radical alignment is more critical than radical density in imparting biocidal behavior. This study shows how the systematic use of magnets during polymerization could pave for probing more significant insights into the mechanism of antimicrobial action in radical‐bearing polymers. Abstract

A single material combining the unique properties of stable radical moieties with the versatility of the epoxy polymer is presented. Electrical conduction for any material is mostly achieved using metals, metal-organics, or organic conductors with extended π-orbital frameworks. However, in this combined material, intrinsic electronic conduction is enabled into the non-conjugated and amorphous epoxy thermoset. Furthermore, using the classical epoxy-amine curing ensures that only a highly crosslinked network with a rigid topology is formed. This design is a departure from other macroradicals with flexible backbones. The hole mobility of the neat macroradical epoxy thermoset is quantified to be ~3.1 × 10−6 cm2 V−1 s−1, already in the regime of traditional semiconductors. This electronic conduction can only be a result of radical-toradical hopping because the thermoset still retains active radicals after polymerization with a short alkyl amine when measured by electron spin resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In the scientific literature, the synthesis of macroradicals using the direct approach is scarce. Herein, to obtain the novel radical epoxy monomer, a very mature yet simple amino-epoxide chemistry is employed to prepare a diglycidylamine based on 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl using the direct approach. EPR spectroscopy also reveals that the radical center remained stable even after epoxidation of the precursor. Consequently, this effort offers a change in thinking on how electronic conduction in open shell polymers operates especially on a rigid backbone and paves for a reassessment of the traditional epoxy polymer as enduring materials for frontier applications.

They enable the synthesis of biaryls by the coupling arylboronic acids with aryl halides. The literature reporting ligand-free synthesis of biaryls from 2010 to May 2015 has been reviewed.

Abstract

We present galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic properties of bulk PbSe doped by substituting the donor elements In and Al for Pb. Although prominent resonant level effects are not seen, lightly doped samples display a high thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) in excess of 1.2 at 600K, a temperature corresponding well to automotive waste heat recovery applications. This material's high zT is achieved without the use of nanostructuring or the relatively rare element Te. Phonon drag contributions to thermopower appear at temperatures below 30K in Al-doped samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The introduction of drug-eluting stents (DES) significantly reduced angiographic restenosis and the clinical need for revascularization following percutaneous coronary intervention. However, concerns remain regarding the long-term safety and efficacy of DES. The use of durable polymers for drug elution that have limited biocompatibility is thought to contribute toward DES failure, by promoting an adverse local inflammatory response and vascular toxicity. Biodegradable polymer and polymer-free metallic stents represent two novel technological solutions to this challenging clinical problem. This review summarizes the available clinical evidence supporting the use of either biodegradable polymer or polymer-free DES platforms.Copyright © 2018 Japanese College of Cardiology

Abstract

Fibre crosslinking with polycarboxylic acids can be used to improve certain properties of paper products, including wet tensile and compressive strength. In the present work it was proposed that citric acid (CA) crosslinks the cellulosic fibres of linerboard by self-catalysed esterification of cellulosic hydroxyl groups, which makes an additional catalyst unnecessary. An increase in CA dose or curing temperature increased linerboard compressive strength. In CA-treated corrugated board most of the applied CA was esterified with fibres while some CA thermolysis products were also present. A significant portion of the applied CA was unaccounted for. The deficit was attributed to thermolysis to give volatile anhydrides of unsaturated acids. Under cyclic humidity and static compressive loading, CA-treated corrugated boxes showed a greater than three-fold increase in resistance to compressive creep, showing that CA treatment can be used to extend the lifetime of corrugated boxes used for horticultural produce storage.

Abstract

Epoxy resin will continue to be in the forefront of many thermoset applications due to its versatile properties. However, with advancement in manufacturing, changing societal outlook for the chemical industries and emerging technologies that disrupt conventional approaches to thermoset fabrication, there is a need for a multifunctional epoxy resin that is able to adapt to newer and robust requirements. Epoxy resins that behave both like a thermoplastic and a thermoset resin with better properties are now the norm in research and development. In this paper, we viewed multifunctionality in epoxy resins in terms of other desirable properties such as its toughness and flexibility, rapid curing potential, self-healing ability, reprocessability and recyclability, high temperature stability and conductivity, which other authors failed to recognize. These aspects, when considered in the synthesis and formulation of epoxy resins will be a radical advance for thermosetting polymers, with a lot of applications. Abstract

This paper aims at elucidating the origin of the high thermoelectric power factor of p-type (AgxSbTe_(x/2+1.5)15)(GeTe)_(85) (TAGS) thermoelectric materials with 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 1.2. All samples exhibit good thermoelectric figures of merit (zT) which reach 1.5 at 700 K for x = 0.6. Thermoelectric and thermomagnetic transport properties (electrical resistivity, Seebeck, Hall and transverse Nernst–Ettinghausen coefficients) are measured and used to calculate the scattering factor, the Fermi energy, the density-of-states (DOS) effective mass and hole mean free path (mfp). The DOS effective mass is very high due to the large band mass of the primary valence band and the high degeneracy of pockets in the Fermi surface from the second valence band. The highly degenerate Fermi surface increased the total DOS without decreasing mobility, which is more desirable than the high DOS that comes from a single carrier pocket. The high-temperature hole mfp approaches the Ioffe–Regel limit for band-type conduction, which validates our discussion based on band transport and is also important for TAGS alloys having high zT with heavy bands. The present results show that multiple degenerate Fermi surface pockets provide an effective way of substantially increasing the power factor of thermoelectric materials with low thermal conductivity.
