Abstract Robust wireless communication using relaying system and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) will be extensively used for future IoT applications. In this paper, we consider a fall detection IoT application in which elderly patients are equipped with wearable motion sensors. Patient motion data is sent to fog data servers via a NOMA-based relaying system, thereby improving the communication reliability. We analyze the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) performance of the NOMA-based relaying system, where the source node transmits two different symbols to the relay and destination node by employing superposition coding over Rayleigh fading channels. In the amplify-and-forward (AF) based relaying, the relay re-transmits the received signal after amplification, whereas, in the decode-and-forward (DF) based relaying, the relay only re-transmits the symbol having lower NOMA power coefficient. We derive closed-form average SINR expressions for AF and DF relaying systems using NOMA. The average SINR expressions for AF and DF relaying systems are derived in terms of computationally efficient functions, namely Tricomi confluent hypergeometric and Meijer’s G functions. Through simulations, it is shown that the average SINR values computed using the derived analytical expressions are in excellent agreement with the simulation-based average SINR results.

The safety of SCUBA divers remains at high risk in deep-sea owing to multiple factors such as dangerous surrounding, rely upon technical equipment necessary for life support, decreased underwater navigation, and communication infrastructure. Gradual decrease and increase in water temperature and pressure corresponding to depth are among the most common problems that cause most of the fatalities in deep-sea diving. Therefore, different gadgets for accurate measurement of vital parameters, reliable navigation, and seamless communication are of prime importance. In this paper, we propose an all-optical technique for local and remote monitoring of underwater temperature and pressure for deep-sea SCUBA divers based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors and underwater optical communication-single mode fiber (UWOC-SMF) integrated transmission system. The proposed technique is implemented using two FBG temperature and pressure sensors fixed over diver’s suit and UWOC-SMF integrated transmission system for simultaneous local and remote monitoring of underwater temperature and pressure. Remote monitoring of underwater temperature and pressure is achieved at ship station through a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) and UWOC-SMF integrated transmission system by means of shifts in the original Bragg wavelengths of sensors due to temperature and pressure variations. The performance of the sensors is analyzed for pressure and temperature in the range of 0 to 6.4 MPa (≈0 to 655 mH2O) and 40 to −2°C, respectively corresponding to different depths. The results show that the proposed technique can work well in the deep ocean over a range of pressures and temperatures of 0–7 MPa and 40 to −2°C while achieving a temperature sensitivity of 4.3 p.m./°C and a pressure sensitivity of 30.5 p.m./MPa. Clear spectra of reflected signals from FBG sensors at ship station are achieved after signal transmission over UWOC-SMF hybrid link.

Intelligent Reconfigurable Surface has become a promising technique in recent years due to its inherent ability to overcome the severe wireless fading channel characteristics such as reflection, refraction, scattering, and diffraction, etc. On the other hand, spatial modulation (SM) is a special type of index modulation technique that is utilized to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we combine these two techniques and propose the two IRS-assisted bi-constellation index spatial modulation (BCI-SM) and multi-constellation index spatial modulation (MCI-SM) schemes operating under Nakagami-m fading channels. The main idea is to select the receive antenna and constellation set indices according to the incoming information bits, thus yielding enhanced spectral efficiency and bit error rate (BER) performance. We also propose the low complex log-likelihood ratio detector for both schemes. In addition, we derive the analytical results for the union bound on the average BER with the ML detector. These results can be generalized for both IRS-assisted BCI-SM and IRS-assisted MCI-SM schemes and are valid for any arbitrary value of m in Nakagami-m fading channels. Simulation results show the superiority of IRS-assisted BCI-SM and IRS-assisted MCI-SM schemes over the existing IRS-aided SM in terms of BER performance. In particular, BCI-SM shows an SNR gain of around 3-5 dB while MCI-SM exhibits an SNR gain of nearly 7-12 dB when compared with the existing IRS-aided SM scheme.

In this paper, we consider multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) assisted cognitive radio network (CRN) and investigate user-IRS association problem. The CRN consists of multiple secondary transmitters (STs), multiple secondary users (SUs) and a single primary user (PU). With the help of IRSs, the received signal strength at the SUs is improved. This is achieved by optimizing IRS phase shifts, which also helps reducing the interference at the PU. The main objective of this study is to obtain the user-IRS association that maximizes the minimum rate of the user in the network. For this purpose, we employ the well-known optimal relay assignment (ORA) algorithm, known for its polynomial-time complexity. The numerical results clearly demonstrate that the user-IRS assignment obtained through the ORA algorithm yields higher minimum rate performance compared to the sum-rate maximizing and random user-IRS assignment methods.

Short-reach optical communication networks have various applications in areas where high-speed connectivity is needed, for example, inter- and intra-data center links, optical access networks, and indoor and in-building communication systems. Machine learning (ML) approaches provide a key solution for numerous challenging situations due to their robust decision-making, problem-solving, and pattern-recognition abilities. In this work, our focus is on utilizing deep learning models to minimize symbol error rates in short-reach optical communication setups. Various channel impairments, such as nonlinearity, chromatic dispersion (CD), and attenuation, are accurately modeled. Initially, we address the challenge of modeling a nonlinear channel. Consequently, we harness a deep learning model called autoencoders (AEs) to facilitate communication over nonlinear channels. Furthermore, we investigate how the inclusion of a nonlinear channel within an autoencoder influences the received constellation as the optical fiber length increases. Another facet of our work involves the deployment of a deep neural network-based receiver utilizing a channel influenced by chromatic dispersion. By gradually extending the optical length, we explore its impact on the received constellation and, consequently, the symbol error rate. Finally, we incorporate the split-step Fourier method (SSFM) to emulate the combined effects of nonlinearities, chromatic dispersion, and attenuation in the optical channel. This is accomplished through a neural network-based receiver. The outcome of this work is an evaluation and reduction of the symbol error rate as the length of the optical fiber is varied.

5G is a key enabler of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) that provides seamless connectivity between machines, sensors and computing servers. Security and privacy are major concerns for 5G enabled IIoT. Physical Layer Security (PLS) is a promising technique that can enhance the security of 5G enabled IIoT. In this paper, we present an IRS-assisted PLS scheme for 5G enabled IIoT that improves the weighted secrecy sum-rate (WSSR) of the industrial wireless network, where eavesdroppers are present around the facility. The key idea is to jointly optimize active and passive beamforming vectors to increase the secrecy rate at the user. To maximize WSSR, we use the stable matching algorithm that optimally assigns IRSs for secure data sharing between industrial units. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme enhances the WSSR performance by 40% and minimum secrecy rate by 25% as compared to the random and maximum weight matching schemes, respectively.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) links enable high-speed data transmission between earth stations and satellites. The propagation of optical signals through the atmosphere suffer from atmospheric attenuation and turbulence due to rain, fog, snow, clouds, and wind. The impact of these impairments on propagation of optical signals becomes more pronounced in the case of deep space links. Therefore, optical amplifiers of high output power and gain are extremely useful in deep space links to achieve error free transmission by improving the link budget. In this paper, we propose the design of an efficient Thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) as booster as well as an in-line based on dual-stage pumping scheme for employment in a dual-hop earth to satellite OWC Link. The pumping scheme, length of Thulium-doped fiber (TDF), and Tm3+ concentration in the proposed design of TDFA are optimized in such a way so that high output power and gain are achieved for booster and in-line stages, respectively. Output power and gain of 4.6 W and 18.8 dB, respectively are achieved for signal power of 0 dBm at 1807.143 nm when TDFA is used as booster amplifier. Similarly, gain and output power of 66.6 dB and 1.5 W, respectively are achieved for signal power of −35 dBm at 1807.143 nm when TDFA is used as in-line amplifier. A noise figure (NF) of 4.4 dB is achieved for signal wavelength of 1807.143 nm and power of 0 dBm. Finally, the system level performance of the designed TDFA is investigated using bit error rate (BER) metric for a dual-hop earth to satellite OWC wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission system of four quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulated optical signals with an aggregate data rate of 104 Gbps. The BER results showed different possible ranges of error-free transmission at the forward error correction (FEC) limit of 10-4 for different values of atmospheric attenuation.

One of the challenges for Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in 5G deployment is to ensure reliability in the various sections of the network as the new services and applications, for instance, video on demand, telemedicine, online learning, smart transportation and augmented reality require not only high bandwidth but also demand uninterrupted service. However, this reliability requires substantial investment. Therefore, MNO only deploys protection or backup resources in the network unless it is cost-effective. The study aims to present a reliable and low-cost protection scheme based on an Ultra-Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (UDWDM PON) for the transport layer of the 5G network, i.e., for the fronthaul/backhaul section. We have evaluated the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) cost of UDWDM PON with and without protection in a dense urban area. We also measure the figure of merit between the cost and reliability of the system and, subsequently, confirm that the proposed protection scheme can achieve system reliability up to four nines with very low additional CAPEX investment. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed protection scheme is also demonstrated through simulation experiments.

A multi-hop free space optical link based on all-optical relays is presented. All-optical relays are either composed of simple optical amplifiers or optical regenerators. It has been shown that after a certain number of hops, the amplifier based relay cannot extend the range of the free space optical link. Therefore, we have investigated the use of a self phase modulation based regenerator as a substitute for simple amplifier based relay. By employing the regenerative relay, a 10 Gbps optical signal having pulse width of 7 ps is transmitted over a distance of 8 km of free space optical link. The free space optical link is modeled on the basis of Gamma-Gamma channel model in the strong turbulence regime. The performance of the link is observed on the basis of bit error rate analysis. It has been shown that under strong turbulence and accumulation of amplifier noise, the range of the link can only be extended by employing an optical regenerator.

Recent advancements in power electronic switches provide effective control and operational stability of power grid systems. Junction temperature is a crucial parameter of power-switching semiconductor devices, which needs monitoring to facilitate reliable operation and thermal control of power electronics circuits and ensure reliable performance. Over the years, various junction temperature measurement techniques have been developed, engaging both non-optical and optical-based methods, highlighting their advancements and challenges. This review focuses on several optical sensing-based junction temperature measuring techniques used for power-switching devices such as metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). A comprehensive summary of recent developments in infrared camera (IRC), thermal sensitive optical parameter (TSOP), and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensing techniques is provided, shedding light on their merits and challenges while providing a few possible future solutions. In addition, calibration methods and remedies for obtaining accurate measurements are discussed, thus providing better insight and directions for future research.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided terahertz (THz) wireless communication system with pointing errors. Specifically, we derive closed-form analytical expressions for the upper bounded ergodic capacity and approximate expression of the outage probability. We adopt an α-μ fading channel model for our analysis that is experimentally demonstrated to be a good fit for THz small-scale fading statistics, especially in indoor communication scenarios. In the proposed analysis, the statistical distribution of the α-μ fading channel is used to derive analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity and outage probability. Our proposed analysis considers not only the IRS reflected channels, but also the direct channel between the communication nodes. The results of the derived analytical expressions are validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Through simulations, it has been noticed that pointing errors degrade the performance of the IRS-assisted THz wireless communication system which can be compensated by deploying an IRS having a large number of reflecting elements.

Free space optics (FSO)-based optical body area networks (OBANs) are receiving massive attention as an opportunity to address the limitations of their radio frequency (RF)-based counterparts. This boom in research interests is primarily due to multitude of benefits, including high capacity, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), rapid installation, cost efficiency, and license-free use of spectrum. Securing the transmission of patient health data against interception in OBANs using insecure FSO channels is a challenging task. Therefore, we propose a low-cost, flexible, and secure OBAN based on FSO technology and a time-delayed two dimensional (2D) spectral/spatial optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) system. The proposed architecture consists of eight sensors attached to the bodies of patients. The sensors operate at a rate of 50 kbps. Electrical data generated from each sensor are used to modulate an optical carrier and then encoded using 2D-spectral/spatial double weight–zero cross correlation (DW-ZCC) code. The 2D encoded optical signals are then time delayed to eliminate the multiple parallel FSO channels between the transmitter and medical center. The combined optical signal consists of eight 2D-encoded time-delayed optical signals transmitted towards a remote medical center over an FSO channel with a range of 1 km. The received signal is decoded and the data from each sensor are recovered after photodetection at the medical center for further analysis. The overall performance of the sensors is analyzed using bit-error rate (BER) and quality factor (Q-factor) plots for different weather conditions and lengths of the FSO channel, considering the log-normal channel model. The capital expenditure (CAPEX) of the proposed architecture is analyzed and compared with the conventional 2D-spectral/spatial FSO system to determine the overall impact of introducing time delay units on the cost of implementation.

Abstract A free space optics based ring topology that transmits full‐duplex data to four different nodes in the ring is proposed. The link is designed such that the four nodes do not require a local optical source to transmit the uplink data. A wavelength division multiplexed signal composed of four different wavelengths each modulated by the downlink baseband data using differential phase shift keying is transmitted towards the nodes. At each node, the downlink baseband data is extracted and the received optical pulses are remodulated by the uplink baseband data using on‐off keying modulation format. Each node has a data rate of 10 Gbps and is at a distance of 400 m from the consecutive node. The free space optical link is modelled on the basis of Gamma‐Gamma channel model under different turbulence conditions by considering the refractive index structure parameter values of 5×10−15, 5×10−13 and 5×10−12m−2/3. Bit error rate results are obtained for both the downlink and uplink channels. Finally, power budget analysis is presented to demonstrate the robustness of the link under different weather conditions.

A cost efficient and reliable single mode fiber and free space optics based hybrid 32×5Gbps ultra dense wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network architecture employing optical comb and polarization multiplexing is proposed. The proposed architecture is a step forward towards shifting the next generation wireless network traffic over existing passive optical network to achieve the optimum bandwidth, capacity, quality of service and cost efficiency for mobile subscribers. Self-restorable passive optical networks having fiber based feeder and distribution paths are widely researched in various studies in the past. However, to the best of our knowledge, a self-restorable passive optical network architecture employing free space optics based protection path has not been proposed so-far. The effect of varying polarization mode dispersion from 0.02 to 0.06ps.km-0.5 and the refractive index structure parameter of the Gamma-Gamma channel model from 5×10-16 to 5×10-12m-2/3 is evaluated. A techno-economic performance analysis of the architecture for downstream is performed by considering both the distribution and protection paths. It has been shown that the receiver sensitivity for a polarization mode dispersion of 0.06ps.km-0.5 is around -22dBm and for strong turbulence is around -20dBm.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can cause loss of vision by damaging the optic nerve. It is the world's second leading cause of blindness after cataracts. Early diagnosis of glaucoma is a key to prevent permanent blindness as it has no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Color fundus photography is used for examining the optic disc (OD) which is an important step in the diagnoses of glaucoma. This is done by estimating the cup-to-disc ratio (CDR). In this paper, we proposed a Cup Disc Encoder Decoder Network (CDED-Net) for the joint segmentation of optic disc (OD) and optic cup (OC). We have eradicated the pre-processing and post-processing steps to reduce the computational cost of the overall system. Segmentation of (OD) and OC is modeled as a semantic pixel-wise labeling problem. The model was trained on the DRISHTI-GS, RIM-ONE and REFUGE datasets. Experiments show that our CDED-Net system achieves state-of-the-art OD and OC segmentation results on these datasets.

Efficient data dissemination is a key challenge for IoT applications. In this paper, we present an ergodic achievable rate analysis of the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based cooperative transmission scheme in spectrum-sharing cognitive radio networks (CRNs). The transmission scheme consists of two phases, where the NOMA transmission strategy is employed at the secondary transmitter (ST) in the second phase to serve the primary receiver (PR) and secondary receivers (SRs). This cooperative spectrum-sharing transmission is favourable when the ST-PR link is strong and the ST faces a spectrum scarcity issue. To evaluate the performance of the network over Nakagami-m channels, ergodic achievable rates at PR and SRs are derived in closed forms, which can be used for any integer or non-integer value of fading index m. Finally, we compare the results of the analytical expressions with simulated results for validation.

Broadband amplification in the O+E-band is very desirable nowadays as a way of coping with increasing bandwidth demands. The main issue with doped fiber amplifiers working in this band such as the bismuth-doped fiber amplifier is that they are costly and not widely available. Therefore, a wideband and flat-gain hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) covering the O+E-band based on a parallel combination of a praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier (PDFA) and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed and demonstrated through numerical simulations. The praseodymium-doped fiber (PDF) core is pumped using a laser diode with a power of 500 mW that is centered at a wavelength of 1030 nm. The SOA is driven by an injection current of 60 mA. The performance of the HOA is analyzed by the optimization of various parameters such as the PDF length, Pr3+ concentration, pump wavelength, and injection current. A flat average gain of 24 dB with a flatness of 1 dB and an output power of 9.6 dBm is observed over a wavelength range of 1270–1450 nm. The noise figure (NF) varies from a minimum of 4 dB to a maximum of 5.9 dB for a signal power of 0 dBm. A gain reduction of around 4 dB is observed for an O-band signal at a wavelength of 1290 nm by considering the up-conversion effect. The transmission performance of the designed HOA as a pre-amplifier is evaluated based on the bit-error rate (BER) analysis for a coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) system of eight on-off keying (OOK)-modulated channels, each having a data rate of 10 Gbps. An error-free transmission over 60 km of standard single-mode fiber (SMF) is achieved for different data rates of 5 Gbps, 7.5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps.

The performance of doped fiber amplifiers can be enhanced significantly with the help of multi-stage pumping technique provided that various critical parameters of pumps including their optical power and wavelength are optimized. We report the performance enhancement of a ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) for a 1.02–1.08 μm spectral region with an optimized design based on a novel dual-stage in-band asymmetrical pumping scheme. By accurately adjusting the optical power and wavelength of pumps in both the stages, a record peak gain of around 62.5 dB and output power of 4.5 W are achieved for a signal wavelength of 1.0329 μm at an optimized length of Ytterbium-doped silica fiber and optimized doping concentration of Yb3+. Moreover, a minimum noise figure (NF) of 4 dB is observed for a signal wavelength of 1.0329 μm at the optimized parameters. Similarly, the effect of using high and low pump powers at the first and the second stage, respectively, on NF of the amplifier is also investigated at different values of signal powers. It is observed that the value of NF increases significantly by using high pump power at the first stage and low pump power at the second stage.

In this paper, we address the performance optimization of Holmium doped fiber amplifier (HDFA) for optical communications in 2–2.15 μm wavelength range based on a single in-band forward pump source. The performance of the HDFA is analyzed with the help of theoretical simulations by considering an optimized length of Holmium doped fiber (HDF), doping concentration of Ho3+, and pump power. The impact of signal wavelength and power on gain, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, and noise figure (NF) of the amplifier is investigated. Furthermore, we investigate the variations in the gain of the amplifier, its output power, and NF by varying the power and wavelength of the pump source. After optimizing the parameters of the amplifier, the peak gain observed is around 56.5 dB, the 3 dB saturated output power obtained is 33.3 dBm, and the output power is 3 W at signal wavelength of 2.0321 μm for HDF having an optimized length of 12 m and pump power of 3.5 W. Minimum NF of around 8.2 dB is observed at 2.0321 μm for signal power of −5 dBm. The impact of ion-ion interaction on the performance of HDFA is also investigated. A reduction of 24.2 dB and 0.051 W is observed in peak gain and output power of HDFA, respectively by considering the ion-ion interaction.

We propose objective and robust measures for the purpose of classification of “vaginal vs. cesarean section” delivery by investigating temporal dynamics and complex interactions between fetal heart rate (FHR) and maternal uterine contraction (UC) recordings from cardiotocographic (CTG) traces. Multivariate extension of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) yields intrinsic scales embedded in UC-FHR recordings while also retaining inter-channel (UC-FHR) coupling at multiple scales. The mode alignment property of EMD results in the matched signal decomposition, in terms of frequency content, which paves the way for the selection of robust and objective time-frequency features for the problem at hand. Specifically, instantaneous amplitude and instantaneous frequency of multivariate intrinsic mode functions are utilized to construct a class of features which capture nonlinear and nonstationary interactions from UC-FHR recordings. The proposed features are fed to a variety of modern machine learning classifiers (decision tree, support vector machine, AdaBoost) to delineate vaginal and cesarean dynamics. We evaluate the performance of different classifiers on a real world dataset by investigating the following classifying measures: sensitivity, specificity, area under the ROC curve (AUC) and mean squared error (MSE). It is observed that under the application of all proposed 40 features AdaBoost classifier provides the best accuracy of 91.8% sensitivity, 95.5% specificity, 98% AUC, and 5% MSE. To conclude, the utilization of all proposed time-frequency features as input to machine learning classifiers can benefit clinical obstetric practitioners through a robust and automatic approach for the classification of fetus dynamics.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterised by the recurrent and unpredictable interruptions of normal brain function, called epileptic seizures. The present study attempts to derive new diagnostic indices which may delineate between ictal and interictal states of epilepsy. To achieve this, the nonlinear modeling approach of global principal dynamic modes (PDMs) is adopted to examine the functional connectivity of the temporal and frontal lobes with the occipital brain segment using an ensemble of paediatric EEGs having the presence of epileptic seizure. The distinct spectral characteristics of global PDMs are found to be in line with the neural rhythms of brain dynamics. Moreover, we find that the linear trends of associated nonlinear functions (ANFs) associated with the 2nd and 4th global PDMs (representing delta, theta and alpha bands) of Fp1-F3 may differentiate between ictal and interictal states of epilepsy. These findings suggest that global PDMs and their associated ANFs may offer potential utility as diagnostic neural measures for ictal and interictal states of epilepsy.

AbstractIn any manufacturing or service industry, substantial effort is made to keep a process under control. However, factors such as measurement error are bound to create distortions. Many researchers have studied the effect of measurement error on various types of control charts including the EWMA control chart. In this paper, we study the effect of measurement error on the competency of the extended EWMA control chart. We examine the performance of the chart in the case of a shift in mean taking into account the model with linear covariates. The consequence of making multiple measurements on each sampled unit is also investigated. Last but not the least, we examine the case of linearly increasing variance. Through a simulation study, we demonstrate that the performance of the chart for detecting a shift in the mean is substantially reduced in the presence of measurement error. The important finding, however, is that, in spite of the existence of measurement error, the EEWMA control chart performs better than the EWMA control chart.
