The growth of the geothermal industry demands the constant search of techniques with the aim of reducing exploration efforts whilst minimizing subsurface uncertainty. The exploration of geothermal resources is fundamental from the exploitation point of view, especially in those regions where this energy is not as widespread as the rest of renewable sources. This research shows how geoelectrical methods can contribute to the investigation and characterization of medium–low enthalpy geothermal resources until about 800 m of depth. A 2000 m long electrical-resistivity tomography profile was performed in a region of Southern Spain with previous evidence of moderate geothermal potential. Results of this geophysical campaign (together with a preliminary geological characterization) allowed for the obtainment of a 2D profile and a pseudo-3D model with extensive information about the subsoil in terms of geological composition and formations. The interpretation of geophysical results denotes the existence of a potential formation constituted by carbonate materials with thickness greater than 300 m, crossing different fractures. Once the ideal location for the geothermal exploitation is defined, the research evaluates the contribution of the possible energy source, deducing that the energy extraction in the potential fracturing area would be double that of the one in the vicinity of the site.

Sulfonimide salts are of great interest for battery use thanks to their special properties including sufficient superior chemical/thermal stabilities, structural flexibility, etc. In particular, the hydrogen-containing sulfonimide (difluoromethanesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion {[N(SO2CF2H) (SO2CF3)]−, DFTFSI−}, stands out owing to its suppressed anion mobility and superior electrochemical properties. We herein report the structural analyses of potassium (difluoromethanesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide {K [N(SO2CF2H) (SO2CF3)], KDFTFSI} by virtue of single crystal X-ray diffraction and computational approaches. Our results reveal that KDFTFSI crystallizes in a orthorhombic cell (space group: Pbcn) comprising of cationic and anionic layers, which is similar to the conventional sulfonimide salt, potassium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide {K [N(SO2CF3)2], KTFSI}. Gas-phase density functional theory calculations show that the conversion from trans to cis DFTFSI− anions is hindered due to the presence of stabilizing intramolecular H-bonding interactions in the trans conformer; yet interaction with K+ substantially minimizes the energy difference between the two conformers due to the formation of strong tridentate K+ coordination with oxygen atoms in the cis KDFTFSI. This work is anticipated to provide further understanding on the structure-property relations of hydrogenated sulfonimide anions, and thus inspire the structural design of new anions for battery research.

Abstract Atomistic-level understanding of ion migration mechanisms holds the key to design high-performance solid-state ion conductors for a breadth of electrochemical devices. First-principles simulations play an important role in this quest. Yet, these methods are generally computationally-intensive, with limited access to complex, low-symmetry structures, such as interfaces. Here we show how topological analysis of the procrystal electron density can be applied to efficiently mitigate this issue. We discuss how this methodology goes beyond current state of the art capabilities and demonstrate this with two examples. In the first, we examine Li-ion transport across grain boundaries in Li3ClO electrolyte. Then, we compute diffusion coefficients as a function of charge carrier concentration in spinel LiTiS2 electrode material. These two case studies do not exhaust the opportunities and might constitute motivations for still more complex applied materials.

In the contemporary era, the exploitation of aquifers in the agricultural sector has become increasingly important. In response, researchers have directed their efforts towards the formulation of effective methodologies, with geophysical prospecting emerging as a fundamental tool in locating the best underground deposits. The magnetic prospecting technique can discriminate between different categories of rocks, which facilitates the localisation of geological contacts—an essential factor in determining the strategic location of boreholes, while electromagnetic time-domain prospecting helps in the definition of sedimentary strata. In particular, this process reveals the important influence of tertiary and metamorphic formations on the regional hydrogeological framework of the studied area. The variable yields recorded in the wells in the area that have yielded good results are a clear indication of the presence of aquifers. However, it is important to note that numerous wells have been drilled in this region that have yielded negligible or even zero flow rates. Prudent selection of the location and depth of boreholes is essential to ensure proper management of this resource. The use of drones equipped with magnetometers is essential to speed up the spatial mapping process. Empirical results corroborate the accurate classification of lithological units, thus facilitating the selection of sites for groundwater abstraction. These studies serve to validate initial hypotheses and profoundly enrich our understanding of the hydrogeological dynamics of the site, thus providing avenues for optimal and sustainable exploitation and future academic research.

P2-Na2/3[Fe1/2Mn1/2]O2 is a promising high energy density cathode material for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries, but its poor long-term stability in the operating voltage window of 1.5–4.25 V vs Na+/Na hinders its commercial application. Here, the authors use a combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and DFT calculations to investigate the origin of the capacity fading, which is attributed to an increase in bulk electronic resistance at high voltage that, among other factors, is nested in a structural phase transition.

En las proximidades de El Oso, en la Moraña abulense, existen varios humedales siendo la laguna de El Hoyo el más importante. Las arenas miocenas y cuaternarias constituyen buenos acuíferos con flujos subterráneos que van de Sur a Norte. En las proximidades de El Oso el nivel freático está muy somero y existe una componente vertical ascendente del flujo. Las aguas son dulces y tienen una composición bicarbonata cálcico sódica. La laguna de El Hoyo tiene modificado su régimen natural por aportes de agua de sondeos cercanos. El Hoyo es una laguna de recarga durante el invierno alimentada principalmente por precipitación directa, aunque durante el verano puede recibir aportes de agua subterránea.

The objective of this study was to obtain the deep subsurface structure of a saline-evaporitic formation affected by an anticlinal structure, defining the position and thickness for its future exploitation (potassium salts). To improve this knowledge, geophysical methods can be applied to establish detailed information on geological structures at depth. This work analyzes the results of a deep time domain electromagnetic (TDEM) survey acquired over the southern flank of the Barbastro-Balaguer Anticline present in the Ebro Basin in the vicinity of Graus (Huesca, Spain), that controls the geometry of the Barbastro saline-evaporitic formation, of interest from the mining point of view. A deep time domain electromagnetic system (TDEM) is used, providing a penetration capability down to 3.0 km depth. A parametric constrained inversion over a lithological known borehole (Monzón-1) is used to obtain a resistivity model and then applied to the rest of the survey points. The applied methodology contributes to improving the geological knowledge, revealing a new detailed geological structure of the Barbastro saline-evaporitic formation affected by the Barbastro-Balaguer Anticline. The survey shows that the Barbastro saline-evaporitic formation presents a structure with a ramp hanging wall and close to flat footwall, generally dipping to the SW, with a decreasing thickness from 1103 m to 601 m, in concordance with the previous accepted geological structural model. The new geophysical study provides essential data, allowing design and drilling optimization in future mining exploitations.

The current energy context demands the use of environmentally friendly solutions that contribute to the displacement of traditional fossil fuels. In this regard, heat pumps have become an important tool in the decarbonization of the heating and cooling energy system. With the aim of providing new information in the field, this research is conducted to analyze the suitability of a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) and an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) in two different scenarios. Systems are designed to cover the heating needs of a building placed in a cold climate area, characterized by being in a thermally and geologically favorable formation (Case 1), and in a mild climate location where the geology is not so appropriate for the thermal exchange with the ground (Case 2). Results highlight the need to perform an exhaustive study of the subsoil and the external conditions of the area for a reliable selection. In Case 1, the ASHP option is discarded due to the demanding outdoor air requirements that rocket the operating costs of the system. In Case 2, both solutions are viable, with the geothermal alternative preferred if the initial investment can be assumed, providing economic advantages from the 17th year of the system operation.

Accelerating materials discovery is the cornerstone of modern technological competitiveness. Yet, the inorganic synthesis of new compounds is often an important bottleneck in this quest. Well-established quantum chemistry and experimental synthesis methods combined with consolidated network science approaches might provide revolutionary knowledge to tackle this challenge. Recent pioneering studies in this direction have shown that the topological analysis of material networks hold great potential to effectively explore the synthesizability of inorganic compounds. In this Perspective we discuss the most exciting work in this area, in particular emerging new physicochemical insights and general concepts on how network science can significantly help reduce the timescales required to discover new materials and find synthetic routes for their fabrication. We also provide a perspective on outstanding problems, challenges and open questions.

Rat and mouse strains differ in behavioral and physiological characteristics, and such differences can contribute to explain discrepant results between laboratories and better select the most appropriate strain for a particular purpose. Differences in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are particularly important given the pivotal role of this system in determining consequences of exposure to stressors. In this regard, Long-Evans (LE) rats are widely used in stress research, but there is no specific study aiming at thoroughly characterizing HPA activity in LE versus other extensively used strains. In a first experiment, LE showed higher resting ACTH and corticosterone levels only at certain points of the circadian rhythm, but much greater ACTH responsiveness to stressors (novel environment and forced swim) than Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Accordingly, enhanced corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) expression in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and reduced expression of glucocorticoid receptors were observed in the hippocampal formation. Additionally, they are hyperactive in novel environments, and prone to adopt passive-like behavior when compared to SD rats. Supporting that altered HPA function has a marked physiological impact, we observed in another set of animals much lower thymus weight in LE than SD rats. Finally, to demonstrate that LE rats are likely to have higher HPA responsiveness to stressors than most strains, we studied resting and stress levels of HPA hormones in LE versus Wistar and Fischer rats, the latter considered an example of high HPA responsiveness. Again, LE showed higher resting and stress levels of ACTH than both Wistar and Fischer rats. As ACTH responsiveness to stressors in LE rats is stronger than that previously reported when comparing other rat strains and they are commercially available, they could be an appropriate model for studying the behavioral and physiological implications of a hyper-active HPA axis under normal and pathological conditions.

The need to use groundwater resources for agricultural and livestock farms is a constantly growing issue, as these resources condition the socio-economic development of many areas with limited climatic regimes and surface water resources. Decisions on the location and characteristics of groundwater extraction works are based on hydrogeological studies, in which geophysical techniques are a very useful tool. In our study, the Time-Domain Electromagnetics technique (TDEM) was used, which significantly improves the precision and safety when planning to drill for water extraction in Mesozoic formations thanks to the significant resistivity contrast among its different hydrogeological units. The performance of a research campaign using TDEM allows for obtaining 2D geoelectrical profiles which define the hydrogeological structure of the study area and the materials of which it is composed, enabling the selection of a site where drilling can be carried out with the best prospects of success. This article shows the usefulness of this study methodology, applied to Mesozoic formations in a specific area located in the municipality of Liceras (Soria, Spain).

ObjectivesWe explored histological and transcriptomic profiles of paired synovial biopsies from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, in order to assess homogeneity in synovial tissue at the individual level.MethodsSynovial biopsies were performed simultaneously in one small and one large joint per patient using needle-arthroscopy for the knee and ultrasound-guided biopsy for the hand or wrist. Synovium from individuals with osteoarthritis was used as controls. Paraffin-embedded samples were stained for CD3, CD20, and CD68. Total RNA was hybridized on high-density microarrays. TCRB variable sequences were obtained from synovial and blood RNA samples.ResultsTwenty paired biopsies from 10 RA patients with active disease were analyzed. Semi-quantification of histological markers showed a positive correlation for synovial hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltrates and CD3-positive T cells between pairs. Pairwise comparison of transcriptomic profiles showed similar expression of RA-related molecular pathways (TCR signaling, T cell costimulation and response to TNFα). T cells clonotypes were enriched in all but one joints compared to blood, regardless of the magnitude of T cell infiltration. Enriched clonotypes were shared between pairs (23–100%), but this was less the case in pairs of joints displaying weaker T cell signatures and more pronounced germinal center-like transcriptomic profiles.ConclusionCellular and molecular alterations in RA synovitis are similar between small and large joints from the same patient. Interindividual differences in magnitude of T cell infiltrates and distribution of enriched T cell clonotypes support the concept of distinct synovial pathotypes in RA that are associated with systemic versus local antigen-driven activation of T cells.

Background We previously reported that dendritic cell-based mRNA vaccination plus ipilimumab (TriMixDC-MEL IPI) results in an encouraging rate of tumor responses in patients with pretreated advanced melanoma. Here, we report the TriMixDC-MEL IPI-induced T-cell responses detected in the peripheral blood.Methods Monocyte-derived dendritic cells electroporated with mRNA encoding CD70, CD40 ligand, and constitutively active TLR4 (TriMix) as well as the tumor-associated antigens tyrosinase, gp100, MAGE-A3, or MAGE-C2 were administered together with IPI for four cycles. For 18/39 patients, an additional vaccine was administered before the first IPI administration. We evaluated tumor-associated antigen specific T-cell responses in previously collected peripheral blood mononuclear cells, available from 15 patients.Results Vaccine-induced enzyme-linked immunospot assay responses detected after in vitro T-cell stimulation were shown in 12/15 patients. Immune responses detected in patients with a complete or partial response were significantly stronger and broader, and exhibited a higher degree of multifunctionality compared with responses in patients with stable or progressive disease. CD8+ T-cell responses from patients with an ongoing clinical response, either elicited by TriMixDC-MEL IPI or on subsequent pembrolizumab treatment, exhibited the highest degree of multifunctionality.Conclusions TriMixDC-MEL IPI treatment results in robust CD8+ T-cell responses in a meaningful portion of stage III or IV melanoma patients, and obviously in patients with a clinical response. The levels of polyfunctional and multiantigen T-cell responses measured in patients with a complete response, particularly in patients evidently cured after 5+ years of follow-up, may provide a benchmark for the level of immune stimulation needed to achieve a durable clinical remission.Trial registration number NCT01302496.

Los brazaletes de piedra del Neolítico Antiguo (ca. 5500-4800 cal AC) y los contextos donde se produjeron son relativamente conocidos. Sin embargo, lugares únicamente destinados a la extracción de materia prima y primera transformación no se han documentado en la Península Ibérica. En este trabajo damos a conocer la primera cantera de mármol para la elaboración de preformas para brazaletes. Se presentan los resultados de prospección y excavación en la cantera de Cortijo Cevico (Ventorros de San José-Loja, Granada). El estudio geológico regional y de la materia prima, así como los análisis tecnológicos, estadísticos y experimentales nos permiten reconocer cómo funcionó la explotación y arrojar luz sobre la organización social de las primeras comunidades agropecuarias.

The use of drones in mining and geological exploration is under rapid development, especially in the field of magnetic field prospection. In part, this is related to the advantages presented for over ground surveys, allowing for high-density data acquisition with low loss of resolution, while being particularly useful in scenarios where vegetation, topography, and access are limiting factors. This work analyzes results of a drone magnetic survey acquired across the old mines of Don Jacobo, where Copper-Cobalt-Nickel stratabound mineralizations were exploited in the Estancias mountain range of the Betic Cordillera, Spain. The survey carried out used a vapor magnetometer installed on a Matrice 600 Pro Hexacopter. Twenty-four parallel survey lines were flown with a speed of 5 m/s, orthogonal to the regional strike of the geological structure, and mineralization with 50 m line separation and 20 m flight height over the ground was studied. The interpretation of the magnetic data allows us to reveal and model two high magnetic susceptibility bodies with residual magnetization, close to the old mines and surface mineral shows. These bodies could be related to potential unexploited mineralized areas whose formation may be related to a normal fault placed to the south of the survey area. Our geophysical survey provides essential data to improve the geological and mining potential of the area, allowing to design future research activities.

Abstract The search for Si-based anodes capable of undergoing low volume changes during electrochemical operation in rechargeable batteries is ample and active. Here we focus on crystalline Si24, a recently discovered open-cage allotrope of silicon, to thoroughly investigate its electrochemical performance using density functional theory calculations. In particular, we examine the phase stability of Na x Si24 along the whole composition range (0 ≤ x ≤ 4), volume and voltage changes during the (de)sodiation process, and sodium ion mobility. We show that Na x Si24 forms a solid solution with minimal volume changes. Yet sodium diffusion is predicted to be insufficiently fast for facile kinetics of Na-ion intake. Considering these advantages and limitations, we discuss the potential usefulness of Si24 as anode material for Na-ion batteries.

Accurate knowledge of phase coexistence regions, i.e., solubility gaps (SGs), is key to the development of mixed transition metal oxides for various applications, such as thermochemical energy storage, or catalysis. However, predicting a SG from first principles in these materials is particularly challenging due to the complex interplay between several sources of entropy, the large configuration space, and the computational expense of ab initio calculations. We present an approach that yields an accurate prediction of the experimental Hausmannite-spinel SG in the case of (Co_{x}Mn_{1−x})_{3}O_{4}. The method uses machine learning to extend an ab initio dataset of hundreds of structures, and it includes many different entropic contributions to the free energy. We demonstrate and quantify the crucial roles of phonon and paramagnetic entropy, and the importance of sampling higher-energy configurations, and correcting for finite-size limitations in the ab initio supercell configurations.

Seafood is both nutritionally and economically significant, with bivalve molluscs being particularly valuable for monitoring environmental pollutants due to their filter-feeding nature and ability to bioaccumulate pollutants. While not often linked to food poisoning, these molluscs can occasionally introduce health risks, highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring. This review provides a thorough analysis of pollutants—including persistent and emerging pollutants, as well as marine toxins—found in bivalve molluscs between 2019 and 2024. Among the studied pollutants, plasticizers and alkaloids are the most frequently analyzed, with liquid and gas chromatography (GC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS) the predominant methods, although novel approaches to determine these compounds, such as sensors, have also emerged in recent years. However, many studies are focused on establishing pollutant content without addressing bioaccumulation (BA) factors, and a lack of standardization in species and sampling locations complicates comparisons between the different published works. Despite some studies linking human activity and algal blooms to BA dynamics, more comprehensive research is needed. Additionally, limited data on the depuration capacity of molluscs underscores the need for further investigation. Although pollutant levels generally remain within legal limits, many substances remain unregulated. Environmental factors also play a critical role in influencing BA, emphasizing the need for future studies to focus on BA factors to better understand these complex dynamics.

The stone bracelets are one of the most outstanding elements of personal ornaments of the ancient Neolithic in Western Mediterranean and the South of the Iberian Peninsula (5500-4800 cal. BCE). These bracelets are considered an element of cultural identity and a chronological marker of the first Neolithic societies in these areas. The study of the production processes of this ornament has brought a new approach to social relations of the early Neolithic groups of this area. The existence of specialized workshops and the circulation of these objects show the shift towards more complex social organizations. The aim of this paper is to present knapping methods and techniques carried out in the Neolithic bracelets quarry of the Cortijo Cevico. This quarry has recently been discovered and excavated, and it is the first site of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula. It is a rocky outcrop in the geological formation of Trías de Antequera, formed by dolomitic marbles. On this site we carried out the extraction works, as well as the first transformation of the knapping performs that were going to be processed as bracelets. In addition, we have applied for the first time in this paper the methodology consists on using diacritical schemes in the knapping waste of the bracelets. This methodology, along with experimentation and technical stigmas, has allowed the recognition of the techniques and methods applied to knapping dolomitic marbles and these are presented for the first time in this paper.

Galectin-3 is a sugar-binding protein that can inhibit antitumour cytotoxic immunity. Here the authors show that Galectin-3 expressed by tumour cells inhibits LFA-1 on cytotoxic lymphocytes, impairing immunological synapse formation, IFNg secretion, and target cell killing.

Due to the complexity of the archaic elbow fibulae of the Iberian Peninsula, our work traits to organize the pivot group. First, its mechanics and conceptualization are defined precisely. Later, an analysis of the previous known facts is done, taking into account its cultural ascription, its chronology, its territorial distribution, its morphology and its technology. This analysis is made with the idea of advancing a viable typologic organisation. To realise the work some representative fibulae are considered, especially those more relevant. The criteria used to select these are its contextualization, its metalic composition, internal relation and time and space characteristics. There are no references to fibulae from out of the Peninsula. The main conclusion of the article is that these pieces are older than what was though in the traditional interpretations.

The geothermal resources in Spain have been a source of deep research in recent years and are, in general, well-defined. However, there are some areas where the records from the National Institute for Geology and Mining show thermal activity from different sources despite no geothermal resources being registered there. This is the case of the area in the south of the Duero basin where this research was carried out. Seizing the opportunity of a deep borehole being drilled in the location, some geophysical resources were used to gather information about the geothermal properties of the area. The employed geophysical methods were time-domain electromagnetics (TDEM) and borehole logging; the first provided information about the depth of the bedrock and the general geological structure, whereas the second one gave more detail on the geological composition of the different layers and a temperature record across the whole sounding. The results allowed us to establish the geothermal gradient of the area and to discern the depth of the bedrock. Using the first 200 m of the borehole logging, the thermal conductivity of the ground for shallow geothermal systems was estimated.

Early life stress (ELS) induces long-term effects in later functioning and interacts with further exposure to other stressors in adulthood to shape our responsiveness to reward-related cues. The attribution of incentive salience to food-related cues may be modulated by previous and current exposures to stressors in a sex-dependent manner. We hypothesized from human data that exposure to a traumatic (severe) adult stressor will decrease the attribution of incentive salience to reward-associated cues, especially in females, because these effects are modulated by previous ELS. To study these factors in Long-Evans rats, we used as an ELS model of restriction of nesting material and concurrently evaluated maternal care. In adulthood, the offspring of both sexes were exposed to acute immobilization (IMO), and several days after, a Pavlovian conditioning procedure was used to assess the incentive salience of food-related cues. Some rats developed more attraction to the cue predictive of reward (sign-tracking) and others were attracted to the location of the reward itself, the food-magazine (goal-tracking). Several dopaminergic markers were evaluated by in situ hybridization. The results showed that ELS increased maternal care and decreased body weight gain (only in females). Regarding incentive salience, in absolute control animals, females presented slightly greater sign-tracking behavior than males. Non-ELS male rats exposed to IMO showed a bias towards goal-tracking, whereas in females, IMO produced a bias towards sign-tracking. Animals of both sexes not exposed to IMO displayed an intermediate phenotype. ELS in IMO-treated females was able to reduce sign-tracking and decrease tyrosine hydroxylase expression in the ventral tegmental area and dopamine D1 receptor expression in the accumbens shell. Although the predicted greater decrease in females in sign-tracking after IMO exposure was not corroborated by the data, the results highlight the idea that sex is an important factor in the study of the long-term impact of early and adult stressors.

Se estudia una muestra inédita de fíbulas antiguas de codo lisas, de las consideradas “tipo Monachil”, tradicionalmente incluidas en el “grupo sículo” de la Península Ibérica. Se valora su tecnología de elaboración, aleación, tipología y posible cronología. Se comprueba que muestran escasas relaciones con fíbulas de diferentes ámbitos geográficos mediterráneos que, inicialmente, se habían considerado su inspiración.

Se estudia un amplio conjunto de fibulas de codo de las tradicionalmente denominadas «sículas», bajo nuestra nomenclatura de tipo «Monachil», que vienen a completar el panorama cada vez más conocido de este tipo de artilugios problemáticos y paradigmáticos del Bronce Final en la Península Ibérica. De nuevo, se profundiza en sus diferentes tipologías y cronologías, así como en su dispersión regional y posible autoctonía o aloctonía, con el fin de seguir incidiendo en la elaboración de un factible marco crono-cultural, en el que encuadrar mínimamente sus mal definidas formas y desarrollos. Con los datos actuales no es factible mantener un origen sículo para estas fíbulas en la Península Ibérica.

El presente estudio pretende determinar si existe o no una mayor reactividad emocional en el Trastorno Límite de la Personalidad (TLP) en un contexto de laboratorio. Se realizó una inducción emocional negativa (presentación de imágenes estandarizadas con contenido negativo) a cincuenta participantes (35 pacientes con TLP y 15 controles sanos). Para evaluar la respuesta emocional subjetiva se utilizaron cuestionarios auto-informados; los niveles de cortisol (sCORT) y alfa-amilasa (sAA) salivares se utilizaron para medir la reactividad biológica al procedimiento. En el grupo de TLP, se observaron niveles de sCORT más bajos y niveles de sAA más elevados en comparación al grupo control. No se observaron diferencias significativas en relación a la reactividad emocional auto-informada, pero los pacientes con TLP reportaron mayor intensidad de emociones negativas a nivel basal así como también durante todo el procedimiento. Los resultados no apoyan la hipótesis de hiperreactividad emocional en el TLP. Sin embargo, los pacientes con TLP presentaron mayor intensidad de emociones negativas a nivel basal, característica que debería ser considerada como esencial en el trastorno. Una nueva fíbula de codo “tipo Huelva” localizada en la región gallega será nuestro objeto de discusión en este trabajo. Para su estudio, analizaremos otras piezas similares localizadas en el entorno del Cerro de los Infantes (Pinos Puente, Granada) que, junto a las ya conocidas, conforman uno de los grupos fibulares más importantes de la Península Ibérica. Discutiremos su tipología y cronología, así como su relación con otros tipos similares del ámbito mediterráneo, comprobándose nuevamente su carácter autóctono.

For an automated camera focus, a fast and reliable algorithm is key to its success. It should work in a precisely defined way for as many cases as possible. However, there are many parameters which have to be fine-tuned for it to work exactly as intended. Most literature only focuses on the algorithm itself and tests it with simulations or renderings, but not in real settings. Trying to gather this data by manually placing objects in front of the camera is not feasible, as no human can perform one movement repeatedly in the same way, which makes an objective comparison impossible. We therefore used a small industrial robot with a set of over 250 combinations of movement, pattern, and zoom-states to conduct these tests. The benefit of this method was the objectivity of the data and the monitoring of the important thresholds. Our interest laid in the optimization of an existing algorithm, by showing its performance in as many benchmarks as possible. This included standard use cases and worst-case scenarios. To validate our method, we gathered data from a first run, adapted the algorithm, and conducted the tests again. The second run showed improved performance.

We evaluated the physiological relevance of metallothionein-III (MT-III) in the central nervous system following damage caused by a focal cryolesion onto the cortex by studying Mt3-null mice. In normal mice, dramatic astrogliosis and microgliosis and T-cell infiltration were observed in the area surrounding the lesioned tissue, along with signs of increased oxidative stress and apoptosis. There was also significant upregulation of cytokines/growth factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1 α/β, and IL-6 as measured by ribonuclease protection assay. Mt3-null mice did not differ from control mice in these responses, in sharp contrast to results obtained in Mt1- Mt2-null mice. In contrast, Mt3-null mice showed increased expression of several neurotrophins as well as of the neuronal sprouting factor GAP-43. Thus, unlike MT-I and MT-II, MT-III does not affect the inflammatory response elicited in the central nervous system by a cryoinjury, nor does it serve an important antioxidant role, but it may influence neuronal regeneration during the recovery process.

Transgenic expression of IL-6 under the control of the GFAP gene promoter (GFAP-IL6 mice) in the CNS causes significant damage and alters the expression of many genes, including the metallothionein (MT) family, especially in the cerebellum. The crossing of GFAP-IL6 mice with MT-1+2 knock out (MTKO) mice provided evidence that the increased MT-1+2 expression normally observed in the GFAP-IL6 mice is an important mechanism for coping with brain damage. Thus, the GFAP-IL6xMTKO mice showed a decreased body weight gain and an impaired performance in the rota-rod test, as well as a higher upregulation of cytokines such as IL-6, IL-1α,β, and TNFα and recruitment and activation of macrophages and T cells throughout the CNS but mainly in the cerebellum. Clear symptoms of increased oxidative stress and apoptotic cell death caused by MT-1+2 deficiency were observed in the GFAP-IL6xMTKO mice. Interestingly, MT-1+2 deficiency also altered the expected frequency of the offspring genotypes, suggesting a role of these proteins during development. Overall, the results suggest that the MT-1+2 proteins are valuable factors against cytokine-induced CNS injury.

Las normas actuales de construcción para envolvente térmica del artículo 4.1.10 de la "Ley General de Urbanismo y Construcción" en Chile son aplicadas sobre una unidad residencial típica, para el clima de Concepción (36 ° de latitud Sur, 73 ° Longitud Oeste). Se utiliza una simulación detallada para evaluar el desempeño energético de dicho edificio. Los resultados de la simulación de las normas chilenas se comparan luego, con resultados de simulación de las normas Passivhaus sobre el mismo diseño de edificio y con resultados de simulación al aplicar alternativas de diseño solar pasivo y mejoramiento intermedio de envolvente térmica. La investigación tiene como objetivo identificar estrategias de diseño útiles para el logro de resultados de desempeño energético comparables a los propuestos por las normas Passivhaus (es decir, menos de 15kWh/m2 annum para calefacción). Esto demostraría a los diseñadores, desarrolladores y clientes la forma de incorporar características rentables y construir más allá de la normativa vigente a fin de lograr un gran ahorro energético. Además, se espera que el estudio sea de utilidad para los responsables de diseñar la reglamentación, ofreciendo sugerencias sobre cómo éstas pueden promover el diseño de edificios de baja demanda energética. Este estudio también tiene como objetivo iniciar un debate sobre futuras metodologías de evaluación de diseño bioclimático en el contexto climático Chileno, de manera que las características útiles de diseño pasivo también puedan ser consideradas, ya que pueden representar una alternativa rentable.

RESUMEN: Desde que en 1979 comenzamos nuestras excavaciones en el yacimiento arqueológico del «Cerro de la Mora» en Moraleda de Zafayona (Granada), el yacimiento ha ido adquiriendo, en cada campaña, mayor importancia, hasta el punto que nos permite presentar, y en base a él únicamente, un estado de la cuestión sobre la Protohistoria en la Cuenca Alta del Genil. Los resultados de los análisis arqueológicos adquieren especial relieve a la luz de los últimos hallargos. La época final del Bronce en esta región últimamente es bastante conocida, aunque en el aspecto prospectivo aún resulte claramente insuficiente. Los estudios de campo son todavía muy recientes, pero ya se puede intentar la sistematización del proceso de iberización a partir de las cerámicas del Bronce Final, las primeras importaciones fenicias a torno y las producciones indígenas torneadas, que inician dicha iberización, en una época que se ha venido en llamar, genéricamente, Protohistoria.

RESUMEN: Se estudia un «cráneo-copa» procedente de la Cueva de la Carigüela en Pinar (Granada). Hallado de una forma fortuita, su situación estratigráfica en la mencionada Cueva, corresponde al nivel VII del punto Norte (a) de la cámara G, de la excavación del Prof. Pellicer (Campaña 1960), datado en el pleno Eneolítico. Junto al «cráneo-copa», apareció una vasija cerámica de cuerpo globular. La importancia de este hallazgo reside en el hecho de ser el primer ejemplar datado y estudiado científicamente y ser por lo tanto básico para el conocimiento de algunos de los rituales practicados por las primitivas poblaciones Eneolíticas.ABSTRACT: The article deals with the study of a «cráneo-copa» found in the cave of La Carigüela, in Pinar (Granada). Found accidentally, its stratigraphie situación in this cave corresponds to level VII of the north point (a) of chamber G, in the excavation by Prof. Pellicer (I960 expedition), dated at the height of the Eneolithic. A roud-shaped ceramic vessel was found beside the «cráneo-copa». The importance of this discovery lies in the fact that it is the first example which has been scientifically dated and studied. It is, therefore, fundamental for the understanding some of the rites practiced by the primitive Eneolithic tribes.

En estos últimos años se han descubierto una serie de abrigos y cuevas con pinturas rupestres de tipo «esquemático» en la provincia de Jaén. En muchos de los casos han sido dadas a conocer de forma muy sucinta a modo de pequeño informe, llamando la atención de los especialistas e interesándoles por ellas. Otras veces las noticias de los hallazgos no han pasado de las páginas del periódico local, con el consiguiente detrimento para el conocimiento de las manifestaciones artísticas de las primitivas poblaciones del Alto Guadalquivir.

RESUMEN: Se estudian una serie de pinturas rupestres de tipo esquemático localizadas en un pequeño abrigo de Moclín (Granada). Las figuras, principalmente humanas y animales, están realizadas con la técnica del trazo uniforme y pintura regularmente absorbida, siendo de color rojo almagra. Estas pinturas se pueden considerar en conjunto como las más completas aparecidas hasta la fecha en la Provincia de Granada y en evidente conexión con otras de la Provincia de Córdoba. El panel ha sido fechado en un horizonte cultural similar al de las cerámicas impresas neolíticas de algunas cuevas andaluzas. Para esta determinación cronológica se ofrecen algunos paralelos cerámicos con impresiones decorativas similares a algunas de las figuras estudiadas.ABSTRACT: Here we study some schematic cave paintings found in a litle shelter in Moclín (Granada). The paintings, mainly human figures and animals, are made with uniform lines and with evenly absorved paint of a dare red colour. These paintings, may be considered as the most complete ones that have been found in Granada up to present time. They are clearly connented with other paintings found in the province of Córdoba. The panel has been dates as painted from the same time as the Neolithic pattery of same cares in Andalucía. To determine the chronology of the panel, a contrast is made between the figures of the paintings and others painted on some pieces of pottery.

De acuerdo con su estructura y disposición morfológica, la mayoría de las regiones que podemos agrupar en la «Cuenca Alta del Guadalquivir», corresponden básicamente a las actuales provincias de Jaén, Granada y Córdoba, sobre todo las tierras situadas a ambas vertientes del río, junto a la falla de Sierra Morena al Norte y el Sistema Subbético al Sur. Pero desde el punto de vista histórico, se incluyen dentro de esa determinación otra serie de zonas que van unidas a aquellos dos ambientes geográficos, participando en el proceso cultural que, en nuestro trabajo, presentamos como ámbitos de interconexión entre unos centros y otros.

Globally, rock art is one of the most widely distributed manifestations of past human activity. Previous research, however, has tended to focus on the art rather than artists. Understanding which members of society participated in creating such art is crucial to interpreting its social implications and that of the sites at which it is found. This article presents the first application of a method--palaeodermatoglyphics--for the estimation of the sex and age of two later prehistoric individuals who left their fingerprints at the Los Machos rockshelter in southern Iberia. The method has the potential to illuminate the complex socio-cultural dimensions of rock art sites worldwide.
