Wireless sensor networks contain of many sensors that can serve as powerful tools for data collection in environments. A key challenge in these networks is the limited lifetime of sensor batteries. Ideally, all nodes would exhaust their energy simultaneously or through regular scheduling, maximizing the lifetime. Consequently, the primary concern is achieving optimal energy utilization to extend the network's lifetime over a logical duration. Depleting the batteries of the sensors means stopping the operation of the network, because it is practically impossible to replace the batteries of thousands of nodes. To address this issue, the low energy adaptive clustering hierarchical (LEACH) protocol has been widely recognized as one of the prominent solutions for clustering WSNs. However, the random selection of cluster heads in each round under the LEACH protocol fails to guarantee proper convergence. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a refined approach by utilizing a genetic algorithm and a novel objective function that incorporates various factors, including energy level and distance. The algorithm employs chromosomes to represent CHs and facilitates the selection of cluster nodes. Notably, the proposed algorithm dynamically performs clustering, meaning that clustering is conducted iteratively, considering identifying dead nodes. By leveraging this approach, the algorithm significantly enhances the clustering quality, ultimately leading to an increased network lifetime. To validate its effectiveness, it is compared with LEACH, LEACH_E and LEACH_EX algorithms, demonstrating its superior capabilities. On average, the proposed algorithm has more alive nodes in the network, and the remaining energy is at least 11% higher than the best other algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUNDS: The abnormal umbilical cord coiling index (UCI) may be one of the ways to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study attempted to determine the association between abnormal UCI and maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. METHODS: This longitudinal study was conducted on 400 women referred for delivery from April to August 2021. UCI was calculated by dividing the total number of coils by the total length of the umbilical cord in centimeters. In eligible cases, the length of the umbilical cord and the number of vascular coils along the total umbilical cord were measured after birth. UCI less than the 10th percentile and more than the 90th percentile was considered abnormal, and between the 10th and 90th percentiles was considered normal. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. P < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The mean length of the umbilical cord was 56.12±8.38 cm, the number of umbilical cord rings was 13.70±3.51, and the UCI was 0.24±0.07. In the regression analysis, women with gestational diabetes had a significant association with abnormal UCI (P = 0.044). Thus, the probability of abnormal UCI was about 3.5 times higher in women with gestational diabetes than in normal pregnancies. Also, the history of stillbirth had a significant association with abnormal UCI (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: It is recommended to perform a UCI examination after delivery as part of a neonatal examination to find an explanation for maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objective: Supplying vitamin D during pregnancy is necessary for fetal calcium homeostasis and bone growth and its mineralization, and its deficiency can lead to pregnancy complications. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of vitamin D level on pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 450 pregnant women referring to Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital in Babol. Mothers' information was collected using a questionnaire. Blood samples were collected from people to measure the serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D3 level by ELISA method using the EUROIMMUN kit. Patients were divided into two groups (vitamin D level< 25 and vitamin D level> 25) and were compared. Findings: 247 people (54.8%) had vitamin D level< 25 and 203 people (44.8%) had vitamin D level> 25. People with lower vitamin D levels had significantly more gestational hypertension (p=0.03) and premature rupture of membranes (PROM) (p=0.04) compared to people with higher vitamin D levels. The variables of labor pain, diabetes, fetal growth restriction and prolonged pregnancy did not show significant differences in people with high and low levels of vitamin D. Pregnancy complications including pre-eclampsia, preterm delivery, placental abruption and fetal growth restriction did not show any significant difference in people with high and low levels of vitamin D. In the evaluation of neonatal outcomes, infant weight, infant gender, fifth minute Apgar, head circumference and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, no significant differences were found. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that some pregnancy complications such as gestational hypertension and premature rupture of membranes (PROM) in pregnant women are related to vitamin D deficiency. Background and Objective: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the common infectious and pathogenic agents, and some of its genotypes have the ability to cause malignant changes in the surface of mucous cells. By examining the prevalence of HPV in atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) Pap smear according to the risk factors, we can make a more correct decision in choosing the evaluation method and directing the patient to report the ASCUS lesion. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the types of human papillomavirus (HPV) in patients with ASCUS Pap smear. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 patients with ASCUS pap smear results and HPV test referred to the colposcopy clinic of Babol Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital during the last two years. Demographic information, history of obstetrics, history of OCP use, history of STD disease and high-risk behaviors, cervical treatments, HPV typing, Pap smear, colposcopy and cervical biopsy results were recorded and analyzed. Findings: The mean age of the patients was 33.83±8.09 years, and ASCUS pap smear showed 129 cases (64.5%) of high-risk papillomavirus, 16 cases (0.8%) of low-risk papillomavirus and 55 cases (27.5%) of both types. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 was in 18 cases (0.9%), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 in 10 cases (0.5%) and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 in 2 cases (0.1%). 17.1% of high-risk viruses caused cervical neoplasm. None of the low-risk viruses led to neoplasms and all of them were inflammatory. In both high-risk and low-risk cases, 14.5% neoplasm was seen. However, the relationship between the type of papillomavirus and the incidence of neoplasm was significant (p=0.058). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the ASCUS pap smear needs more detailed investigation such as colposcopy and cervical biopsy under the supervision of experts because it is associated with the high-risk HPV virus in many cases. Fuzzy C-mean (FCM) is the most well-known and widely-used fuzzy clustering algorithm. However, one of the weaknesses of the FCM is the way it assigns membership degrees to data which is based on the distance to the cluster centers. Unfortunately, the membership degrees are determined without considering the shape and density of the clusters. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which takes the FCM clustering results and re-fuzzifies them by taking into account the shape and density of the clusters. The algorithm first defuzzifies the FCM clustering results. Then the crisp result is fuzzified again. Re-fuzzification in our algorithm has some advantages. The main advantage is that the fuzzy membership degrees of data points are obtained based on the shape and density of clusters. Adding the ability to eliminate noise and outlier data is the other advantage of our algorithm. Finally, our proposed re-fuzzification algorithm can slightly improve the FCM clustering quality, because the data points change their clusters according to similarity to the shape and density of their respective clusters. Objective: The Apgar score as a proven useful tool for rapid assessment of the neonate is often poorly correlated with other indicators of intrapartum neonatal well-being. This study was carried out to determine the correlation between umbilical cord pH and Apgar score in high-risk pregnancies. Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional, analytic study performed on 96 mother-fetal pairs during 2004-2005 at Shahid Yahyanejad Hospital, which is affiliated to Babol University of Medical Sciences. Apgar score at 1 and 5 minutes after birth was taken and an umbilical cord blood gas analysis was done immediately after birth in both groups. Mothers came with a labor pain and were divided into high-risk and low risk if they have had any perinatal risk factors. Other data like gestational age, birth weight, need for resuscitation and admission to the newborn ward or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was gathered by a questionnaire for comparison between the two groups. P-value less than 0.05 was considered being significant.Findings: The gestational age and birth weight were the same in high-risk and low risk mothers. Mean umbilical artery blood pH in high-risk mothers was significantly lower than in low risk mothers (P=0.004). Mean Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes were significantly lower in high-risk mothers than in low risk mothers (P<0.05). According to the Kendal correlation coefficient there was no significant correlation between Apgar score at 1 and 5 minutes and umbilical cord pH in low risk group (r=0.212, P=0.1). But in high-risk group there was significant correlation between Apgar score at 1st and 5th minute and the umbilical cord pH (r=0.01, P=0.036 and r=0.176, P=0.146, respectively). Conclusion: Combination of Apgar score and umbilical cord pH measurement in high-risk pregnant mother could better detect jeopardized baby. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim. The issue of preterm birth due to exposure to magnetic fields from power lines is unclear. Exposure to electromagnetic field in uterus has been hypothesized as possible preterm birth. The aim of the present study was to determine whether living closer to high voltage power lines increased the risk of preterm labor. Methods. In a nested case-control study, 135 cases of singleton live spontaneous preterm birth in Rohani hospital, Babol, Iran, during the period between 2013 and 2014 were studied. The 150 control subjects were singleton term live birth in the same year of birth and city of residence using randomized-digit dialing. The shortest distance to any of the high voltage power lines to the maternal residence during pregnancy was measured using ArcGIS software for every case and control. To test the association between the preterm births and the residential proximity to power lines, stepwise multiple logistic regression was used. Results. There were 28 households, 20 cases (14.8%) and 8 controls (5.3%) situated within 600 meters of high voltage power lines. The adjusted OR for spontaneous preterm birth and birth defect in women who were living in less than 600 meters from high voltage power lines was higher compared to those living at farther distance (OR = 3.28, CI: 1.37 to 7.85) and (OR = 5.05, CI: 1.52 to 16.78), respectively. Conclusions. Therefore, installing overhead power lines and stations within 600 meters or making overhead underground would be useful in the prevention of both preterm birth and birth defect.

Botulinum toxin produced by Clostridium butolinum in one of the most fatal toxins known. Botulism is the name given to condition produced by this toxin. In recent years the diluted form of this toxin has been produced in injection form and used for treatment of hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm. This toxin blocks neuromuscular junction and inhibits acetylcholine release. In this article we reported 36 patients suffering from hemifacial & blepharospasm treated by injections of botulinum A toxin. 85 to 90 percent of patients responded well. The common complications of this drug were ptosis, hemifacial paresis, burning of the mouth and discoloration of the injection site. Generally speaking the patients preferred this toxin to taking oral medications which were less effective.

Background & Aims: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and linoleic acid (LA) have been shown to exhibit anti-proliferative effects against breast cancer cells. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not yet fully understood. One potential mechanism is through the regulation of microRNAs (miRs), which are known to play a crucial role in breast cancer development and progression. This study aimed to investigate the expression of miR-342 and miR-101 as tumor-suppressor miRs in the human HER-2 positive breast cancer cell line BT-474 after treatment with DHA, LA, alone or in combination with Taxol, a standard chemotherapy agent., Methods: The human breast cancer cell line BT-474 was cultured, and the IC50 for Taxol was determined using the MTT assay. Cells were then cultured and treated for 24 h with 100 μM DHA and 50 μM LA, alone or in combination with the respective IC50 of Taxol. Cells were harvested, and miRNA extraction and cDNA synthesis were performed using standard methods. Expression levels of miRs were analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and results were normalized against U6 snRNA expression levels., Results: The Taxol IC50 for BT-474 cells was 19 nM. According to the data obtained from our study, it was observed that Taxol treatment resulted in the down-regulation of both miR-101 and miR-342 (3.69 (p < 0.0001) and 1.88 fold, (p < 0.0001) respectively). In addition, DHA, LA and DHA + LA caused up-regulation of miR-101 (0.11, 0.05, 0.03 fold (p < 0.0001) respectively) but not miR-342 (decreased by 1.93 (p < 0.0001), 2.89 (p < 0.0001) and 1.19 fold (p = 0.0029) respectively). Notably, treatment with DHA, LA and DHA + LA was able to restore the down-regulated expression of miR-101 (0.25 (p < 0.0001), 0.05 (p = 0.0012) and 0.06 fold (p < 0.0001) respectively) during Taxol treatment., Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that DHA and LA can effectively compensate for the reduced expression of miR-101 during Taxol treatment. These findings suggest that dietary fatty acids may play a critical role in modulating the anti-cancer effects of chemotherapy agents. Background and Aims: One of the causes of preterm labor and recurrent abortion is progesterone deficiency in the luteal phase. The aim of the study was a comparison of the effect of oral dydrogesterone and vaginal progesterone for luteal-phase support (LPS) in assisted reproductive technology cycles (ART)., Methods: This randomized clinical control trial study was conducted on 207 infertile women. Samples were randomly divided into two groups. The first group received a natural micronized vaginal progesterone (MVP) of 400 mg once daily and the second group received dydrogesterone (Duphestone) 20 mg twice daily. Then chemical pregnancy, abortion, and live births were compared in two groups., Results: The results of the study showed that the vaginal form of the drug could increase the chance of pregnancy (positive β-human chorionic gonadotropin) versus the oral form. According to the results of multiple logistic regression analysis after adjusting for other variables, the live birth rate in the vaginal group was more than five times that of the oral group (odds ratio = 5.07; 95% confidence interval = 1.24-20.65; p  = 0.023)., Conclusion: The vaginal form of the progesterone could increase the chance of pregnancy and the outcome of fertility (live birth). Introduction: High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) are known to contribute to cervical cancer (CC), but the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in this process remains unclear, despite EBV's widespread detection in premalignant and malignant cervical tissues., Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 258 cervical samples, including both formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and fresh cervical tissues, the presence and viral load of HR-HPVs (HPV-16 and HPV-18) and EBV were evaluated in Iranian women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and a cervicitis control group using real-time PCR., Results: The study revealed a significant correlation between disease severity and both increased HPV-16 positivity and HPV-16 and HPV-18 co-infection (p<0.001). Interestingly, the control group had a higher frequency of EBV-positive cases than SCC/CIN groups (p<0.001). HPV-16 DNA load increased with disease severity (P<0.001), while HPV-18 showed no significant difference (P=0.058). The control group had a higher EBV DNA load compared to SCC/CIN groups (P=0.033). HPV-16 increased the risk of CIN II, CIN III, and SCC, while HPV-18 increased the risk of CIN II and CIN III. Notably, EBV was associated with a lower risk of CIN groups and SCC., Conclusions: No significant difference in EBV co-infection with HPV-16/18 was found, failing to support the hypothesis that EBV is a cofactor in CC. However, high EBV viral load in the control group suggests a potential "hit and run hypothesis" role in CC progression. Drylands of the southwestern United States are rapidly warming, and rainfall is becoming less frequent and more intense, with major yet poorly understood implications for ecosystem structure and function. Thermography-based estimates of plant temperature can be integrated with air temperature to infer changes in plant physiology and response to climate change. However, very few studies have evaluated plant temperature dynamics at high spatiotemporal resolution in rainfall pulse-driven dryland ecosystems. We address this gap by incorporating high-frequency thermal imaging into a field-based precipitation manipulation experiment in a semi-arid grassland to investigate the impacts of rainfall temporal repackaging. All other factors held constant, we found that fewer/larger precipitation events led to cooler plant temperatures (1.4°C) compared to that of many/smaller precipitation events. Perennials, in particular, were 2.5°C cooler than annuals under the fewest/largest treatment. We show these patterns were driven by: increased and consistent soil moisture availability in the deeper soil layers in the fewest/largest treatment; and deeper roots of perennials providing access to deeper plant available water. Our findings highlight the potential for high spatiotemporal resolution thermography to quantify the differential sensitivity of plant functional groups to soil water availability. Background: The aim of this work was to assess the robustness of cardiac SPECT radiomic features against changes in imaging settings, including acquisition, and reconstruction parameters., Methods: Four commercial SPECT and SPECT/CT cameras were used to acquire images of a static cardiac phantom mimicking typical myorcardial perfusion imaging using 185 MBq of 99m Tc. The effects of different image acquisition and reconstruction parameters, including number of views, view matrix size, attenuation correction, as well as image reconstruction related parameters (algorithm, number of iterations, number of subsets, type of post-reconstruction filter, and its associated parameters, including filter order and cut-off frequency) were studied. In total, 5,063 transverse views were reconstructed by varying the aforementioned factors. Eighty-seven radiomic features including first-, second-, and high-order textures were extracted from these images. To assess reproducibility and repeatability, the coefficient of variation (COV), as a widely adopted metric, was measured for each of the radiomic features over the different imaging settings., Results: The Inverse Difference Moment Normalized (IDMN) and Inverse Difference Normalized (IDN) features from the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Run Percentage (RP) from the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLRLM), Zone Entropy (ZE) from the Gray Level Size Zone Matrix (GLSZM), and Dependence Entropy (DE) from the Gray Level Dependence Matrix (GLDM) feature sets were the only features that exhibited high reproducibility (COV ≤ 5%) against changes in all imaging settings. In addition, Large Area Low Gray Level Emphasis (LALGLE), Small Area Low Gray Level Emphasis (SALGLE) and Low Gray Level Zone Emphasis (LGLZE) from GLSZM, and Small Dependence Low Gray Level Emphasis (SDLGLE) from GLDM feature sets turned out to be less reproducible (COV > 20%) against changes in imaging settings. The GLRLM (31.88%) and GLDM feature set (54.2%) had the highest (COV < 5%) and lowest (COV > 20%) number of the reproducible features, respectively. Matrix size had the largest impact on feature variability as most of the features were not repeatable when matrix size was modified with 82.8% of them having a COV > 20%., Conclusion: The repeatability and reproducibility of SPECT/CT cardiac radiomic features under different imaging settings is feature-dependent. Different image acquisition and reconstruction protocols have variable effects on radiomic features. Background and Aims: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and linoleic acid (LA) have modulatory effects on breast cancer (BC) cell lines. We aimed to investigate the effects of DHA, LA alone, in combination, and in the presence of paclitaxel on the expression of five microRNAs involved in the pathology of BC in MDA-MB-231 cell line., Methods: MDA-MB-231 cells were treated with either DHA or LA or in combination in the presence/absence of paclitaxel (Taxol). Total RNA was extracted and cDNA synthesized from the cells before and after treatment. The expression levels of miR-30, miR-106b, miR-20, miR-126, and miR-194 were determined by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR)., Results: Treatment of MDA-MB-231 cells with DHA modulated the gene expression of miR-30 (increased by 7.74-fold (p < 0.0001), miR-194 (decreased by 11-fold (p < 0.0001)), miR-106b (increased by 2.64-fold (p = 0.0004), miR-126 (decreased by 50-fold (p < 0.0001)), and miR-20 (decreased by 4-fold (p < 0.0001)). Additionally, treatment of MDA-MB-231 cells with LA modulated the gene expression of miR-30 (increased by 2.38-fold (p = 0.0001)), miR-194 (decreased by 100-fold (p < 0.0001)), miR-106b (decreased by 10-fold (p < 0.0001)). The combined DHA/LA treatment of MDA-MB-231 cells showed regulatory effect on the expression of studied microRNAs in which decreased the expression of miR-30 (5.5-fold (p < 0.0001)), miR-194 (11-fold (p < 0.0001)), miR-20 (3.5-fold (p = 0.0006)), and increased the expression of miR-106b (9.78-fold (p < 0.0001))., Conclusions: Modulation of the expression levels of BC-involved microRNAs could be one of the possible mechanisms of action through which DHA and LA may exert their biologic effects on MDA-MB-231 cell line., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest Authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021. Background: Hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis E viruses (HEV) are endemic in Iran and are known major causes of acute viral hepatitis. Also, during pregnancy, they are associated with severe outcomes. Therefore, it is vital to evaluate the antibody levels against HAV and HEV in pregnant women to avoid severe outcomes incidence. Study design and methods . A total of 247 pregnant women were enrolled in this prospective cross-sectional study. In addition to completing the questionnaire and interviewing all participants, the serum samples were tested for anti-HAV and anti-HEV IgG using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The association between anti-HAV and anti-HEV antibodies status and risk factors was evaluated., Results: The mean age of patients was 28.06 ± 5.29 years. Anti-HAV antibody was found in 111 patients (44.9%), while anti-HEV antibody was detected in only two pregnant women (0.8%). The seroprevalence of HAV was inversely related to the level of education. Background/aim: Diclofenac (DIC) is a Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and consumption of this drug creates side effects such as renal injury. The purpose of this work was to assess the influences of gallic acid (GA) on DIC-induced renal injury in rats., Material and Methods: Rats were segregated into five groups. Group 1, control group; Group 2 received DIC-only (50 mg/kg bw, i.p.) for 7 consecutive days; Groups 3, received GA-only (100 mg/kg bw, po) for 7 consecutive days; group 4 received DIC (50 mg/kg bw, i.p.) plus GA (50 mg/kg, po) for 7 consecutive days and group 5 received DIC (50 mg/kg bw, i.p.) plus GA (100 mg/kg, po) for 7 consecutive days., Results: The data indicated that the levels of the serum protein carbonyl, sGOT, sGPT, urea, creatinine, uric acid, nitrite content, MDA, serum IL-1β, and the renal IL-1β gene expression were remarkably increased in DIC-only treated animals compared to control group. In the other hand, treatment with gallic acid led to significant improvements in abnormalities of DIC-induced oxidative stress and serum biochemical parameters. Aims: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as an omega 3 free fatty acid has been reported to exert anti-angiogenesis effects. However, our current understanding regarding the precise mechanisms of such effects is still limited. Exosomes secreted by cancer cells may act as angiogenesis promoters. The aim of the study was to determine altered expression levels of HIF-1α, TGF-β, VEGFR, Snail1, Snail2 and SOX2 and their regulating microRNAs in MDA-MB-231 and BT-474 cell lines after treatment with DHA in both normoxic and hypoxic conditions., Main Methods: Human breast cancer cell lines including MDA-MB-231 and BT-474 were treated for 24 h with 100 uM DHA under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Exosomes were isolated from untreated and treated cells and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and western blotting. RNAs from cells and isolated exosomes were extracted and cDNAs were synthesized. Expression levels of miRNAs and their pro-angiogenic target genes were analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR)., Key Findings: We showed significant decrease in the expression of pro-angiogenic genes including HIF1-α, TGF-β, SOX2, Snail1, Snail2 and VEGFR in cells and also their secreted exosomes after treatment with DHA in normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Also the expression levels of tumor suppressor miRs including miR-101, miR-199, miR-342 were increased and the expression levels of oncomiRs including mir-382 and miR-21 were decreased after treatment with DHA in cells and exosomes., Significance: DHA can alter the expression of pro-angiogenic genes and microRNA contents in breast cancer cells and their derived-exosomes in favor of the inhibition of angiogenesis. Many cytokines are crucial drivers of cancers and autoimmune conditions. These proteins bind to receptors and signal their responses through Janus kinase (JAK) and signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathways. Genetic variations in the JAK-STAT pathway are correlated with the increased risk of cancers, autoimmunity as well as inflammatory diseases. Targeting JAKs and STATs can be a safe and efficacious strategy for treating these diseases. Tofacitinib, as the first JAK inhibitor, is approved for rheumatoid arthritis therapy. Also, many other JAK inhibitors have been proven or are in various phases of clinical trials for various diseases. Background: MHC class I chain-related protein A (MICA) is a membrane glycoprotein expressed abnormally on some malignant cells including gastric cancer (GC) cell and elicits anti-tumor immune responses. Downregulation of MICA expression could lead to immune-evasion of cancer cells., Objective(s): In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and docetaxel alone or in combination on the expression level of MICA and its regulating microRNA (miRNA), miR-20a in MKN45 GC cell line., Method(s): MKN45 GC cell line was cultured and MTT assay was performed to determine IC50 of docetaxel. Cells were treated by 18.5 μM docetaxel and 100 μM DHA. After that, RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis were done and the expression level of MICA and miR-20a were determined by quantitative real-time PCR for both treated and untreated cell lines., Results: Our findings showed less downregulation of the expression level of MICA by the combination of docetaxel/DHA (5.34-fold) compared with docetaxel (45.45-fold) and DHA (55.55-fold). Consistently, combination therapy led to the more downregulation of the expression level of the miR-20a (5.20-fold) in comparison to docetaxel (2.38-fold) and DHA (1.60-fold)., Conclusion(s): As an unwanted effect of docetaxel therapy in GC, downregulation of MICA expression could lead to weak anti-tumor immune responses. By increasing the expression level of MICA, combination therapy of docetaxel with DHA would be useful to overcome this side effect.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancers with the majority of patients recognized in advanced stages. The efficacy of using docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) as a supplementary agent has been suggested in treatment along with chemotherapeutics including docetaxel. However, the molecular signatures of such beneficial effects are not well-understood., Objective(s): We aimed to evaluate the effects of DHA and docetaxel on the expression level of metastasis-related genes, including MMP-2 and talin-2, and their controlling miRNAs, miR-106b and miR-194, in metastatic GC cell line, MKN45., Method(s): GC cell line, MKN45, was cultured, and determination of IC50 of DHA was done by MTT test. Cells were treated with docetaxel, DHA, and their combination for 24 h, and then total RNA was extracted and cDNA synthesis was done using standard protocols. The expression level of target genes, MMP-2 and talin-2, and miR-106b and miR-194 were determined by using quantitative real-time PCR., Results: The expression level of MMP-2 was decreased significantly in all treated cells. However, talin-2 showed significant downregulation only after treatment with docetaxel. In contrary to increased expression after treatment with docetaxel, DHA led to a significant under-expression of miR-106b. The similar effect was seen for miR-194., Conclusion(s): Combination of docetaxel and DHA led to the significant downregulation of MMP-2. Also, DHA lowered the docetaxel-mediated upregulation of miR-106b oncomiR. In conclusion, supplementation of docetaxel therapy with DHA in GC patients would be considered as a beneficial approach in cancer treatment.

There is insufficient evidence with respect to the effect of the standard anticancer therapeutic agents as well as common dietary supplements on the expression of such genes and microRNAs (miRNAs). Therefore, this study was aimed to study the effect of applying linoleic acid (LA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) fatty acids alone or combined with Taxol on the expression of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, MMP-2, vimentin, and talin2 genes, tumor-suppressor miR-194 and, onco-miR-106b in triple-negative breast cancer cell line, known as MDA-MB-231. MDA-MB-231 as metastatic breast cancer cell line was cultured and treated using 0.3 μM Taxol, 100 μM DHA, and 50 μM LA for 24 hours, alone or combined with Taxol under the normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Cells were harvested, after RNA extraction and complementary DNA synthesis, analysis of the expression levels of the studied genes and miRNAs was done through the use of the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Wound healing assay and Western blot analysis were also performed for confirmation. The results of qRT-PCR showed that treating the MDA-MB-231 cells with DHA caused an increase in the miR-194 expression and a decrease in the miR-106b expression, leading to the downregulation of the MMP-2 and MMP-9, and vimentin, and upregulation of the talin2 under the normoxic and hypoxic conditions. The results of the wound healing scratch assay revealed that the administration of the DHA and the DHA-Taxol combination caused the repression of cell migration in comparison with the control groups under the normoxic and hypoxic conditions. The results of the Western blot analysis demonstrated that DHA and the DHA-Taxol combination caused an increase in the expression of the talin2 protein rather than the control cells under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. This study showed that DHA has significant antimetastatic effects against the triple-negative breast cancer cells. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate several biological and physiological processes in mammalian cells, including cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and metabolism. Recent studies have confirmed the alteration of them during the cancer development. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), belonging to the large family of proteases, have also been demonstrated to play crucial roles in tissue remodeling, and to support cancer progression and metastasis. There are several known miRNAs which regulate the MMP family and their expression. The expression profiles of miRNAs involved in MMP regulation, change during cancer progression, and metastasis. Visceral leishmaniasis remains a serious public health problem in developing countries. Cytokines have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease. We evaluated plasma levels of IL-10, IL-12 and IFN- in 32 patients with active visceral lieshmaniasis, in 29 siblings of the patients and in 23 normal individuals in an endemic area to look for correlations between the clinical outcome of infection and the plasma cytokine levels. An analysis was made with a skin test and a quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay. Data were analyzed with the Mann Whitney test and the Kruskal Wallis test. The cytokine levels were significantly higher in the patients than in the control groups. We concluded that normalization of the plasma level of IFN- can serve as a reliable parameter for considering the patient as cured.

Chimpanzees were examined for the effect of viral hepatitis infections on specific and nonspecific immune response mechanisms. The data suggest that infection with either hepatitis B virus or hepatitis non-A, non-B virus may result in suppression of cellular immune response components. Mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation was lower in virus-infected chimpanzees than in naive animals. Neutrophils from virus infected animals exhibited decreased or altered chemiluminescence kinetics.
