Urban environments face significant challenges due to climate change, including extreme heat, drought, and water scarcity, which impact public health, community well-being, and local economies. Effective management of these issues is crucial, particularly in areas like Sydney Olympic Park, which relies on one of Australia's largest irrigation systems. The Smart Irrigation Management for Parks and Cool Towns (SIMPaCT) project, initiated in 2021, leverages advanced technologies and machine learning models to optimize irrigation and induce physical cooling. This paper introduces two novel methods to enhance the efficiency of the SIMPaCT system's extensive sensor network and applied machine learning models. The first method employs clustering of sensor time series data using K-shape and K-means algorithms to estimate readings from missing sensors, ensuring continuous and reliable data. This approach can detect anomalies, correct data sources, and identify and remove redundant sensors to reduce maintenance costs. The second method involves sequential data collection from different sensor locations using robotic systems, significantly reducing the need for high numbers of stationary sensors. Together, these methods aim to maintain accurate soil moisture predictions while optimizing sensor deployment and reducing maintenance costs, thereby enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the smart irrigation system. Our evaluations demonstrate significant improvements in the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of soil moisture monitoring networks. The cluster-based replacement of missing sensors provides up to 5.4% decrease in average error. The sequential sensor data collection as a robotic emulation shows 17.2% and 2.1% decrease in average error for circular and linear paths respectively.

This paper introduces the Stable Matching Based Pairing (SMBP) algorithm, a high-performance external validity index for clustering evaluation in large-scale datasets with a large number of clusters. SMBP leverages the stable matching framework to pair clusters across different clustering methods, significantly reducing computational complexity to $O(N^2)$, compared to traditional Maximum Weighted Matching (MWM) with $O(N^3)$ complexity. Through comprehensive evaluations on real-world and synthetic datasets, SMBP demonstrates comparable accuracy to MWM and superior computational efficiency. It is particularly effective for balanced, unbalanced, and large-scale datasets with a large number of clusters, making it a scalable and practical solution for modern clustering tasks. Additionally, SMBP is easily implementable within machine learning frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow, offering a robust tool for big data applications. Quantum error correction is necessary for achieving exponential speedups on important applications. The planar surface code has remained the most studied error-correcting code for the last two decades because of its relative simplicity. However, encoding a singular logical qubit with the planar surface code requires physical qubits quadratic in the code distance~($d$), making it space-inefficient for the large-distance codes necessary for promising applications. Thus, {\em Quantum Low-Density Parity-Check (QLDPC)} have emerged as an alternative to the planar surface code but require a higher degree of connectivity. Furthermore, the problems of fault-tolerant syndrome extraction and decoding are understudied for these codes and also remain obstacles to their usage. In this paper, we consider two under-studied families of QLDPC codes: hyperbolic surface codes and hyperbolic color codes. We tackle the three challenges mentioned above as follows. {\em First}, we propose {\em Flag-Proxy Networks (FPNs)}, a generalizable architecture for quantum codes that achieves low connectivity through flag and proxy qubits. {\em Second}, we propose a {\em greedy syndrome extraction scheduling} algorithm for general quantum codes and further use this algorithm for fault-tolerant syndrome extraction on FPNs. {\em Third}, we present two decoders that leverage flag measurements to decode the hyperbolic codes accurately. Our work finds that degree-4 FPNs of the hyperbolic surface and color codes are respectively $2.9\times$ and $5.5\times$ more space-efficient than the $d = 5$ planar surface code, and become even more space-efficient when considering higher distances. Streaming services have reshaped how we discover and engage with digital entertainment. Despite these advancements, effectively understanding the wide spectrum of user search queries continues to pose a significant challenge. An accurate query understanding system that can handle a variety of entities that represent different user intents is essential for delivering an enhanced user experience. We can build such a system by training a natural language understanding (NLU) model; however, obtaining high-quality labeled training data in this specialized domain is a substantial obstacle. Manual annotation is costly and impractical for capturing users' vast vocabulary variations. To address this, we introduce a novel approach that leverages large language models (LLMs) through weak supervision to automatically annotate a vast collection of user search queries. Using prompt engineering and a diverse set of LLM personas, we generate training data that matches human annotator expectations. By incorporating domain knowledge via Chain of Thought and In-Context Learning, our approach leverages the labeled data to train low-latency models optimized for real-time inference. Extensive evaluations demonstrated that our approach outperformed the baseline with an average relative gain of 113% in recall. Furthermore, our novel prompt engineering framework yields higher quality LLM-generated data to be used for weak supervision; we observed 47.60% improvement over baseline in agreement rate between LLM predictions and human annotations with respect to F1 score, weighted according to the distribution of occurrences of the search queries. Our persona selection routing mechanism further adds an additional 3.67% increase in weighted F1 score on top of our novel prompt engineering framework., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present Benchpress, a benchmarking suite for evaluating the performance and range of functionality of multiple quantum computing software development kits. This suite consists of a collection of over $1000$ tests measuring key performance metrics for a wide variety of operations on quantum circuits comprised of up to $930$ qubits and $\mathcal{O}(10^{6})$ two-qubit gates, as well as an execution framework for running the tests over multiple quantum software packages in a unified manner. We give a detailed overview of the benchmark suite, its methodology, and generate representative results over seven different quantum software packages. The flexibility of the Benchpress framework allows for benchmarking that not only keeps pace with quantum hardware improvements but can preemptively gauge the quantum circuit processing costs of future device architectures. As autonomous vehicles become more prevalent, highly accurate and efficient systems are increasingly critical to improve safety, performance, and energy consumption. Efficient management of energy-reliability tradeoffs in these systems demands the ability to predict various conditions during vehicle operations. With the promising improvement of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the emergence of well-known models like ChatGPT, unique opportunities for autonomous vehicle-related predictions have been provided in recent years. This paper proposed MAPS using LLMs as map reader co-drivers to predict the vital parameters to set during the autonomous vehicle operation to balance the energy-reliability tradeoff. The MAPS method demonstrates a 20% improvement in navigation accuracy compared to the best baseline method. MAPS also shows 11% energy savings in computational units and up to 54% in both mechanical and computational units.

Fog computing is essentially the expansion of cloud computing towards the network edge, reducing user access time to computing resources and services. Various advantages attribute to fog computing, including reduced latency, and improved user experience. However, user mobility may limit the benefits of fog computing. The displacement of users from one location to another, may increase their distance from a fog server, leading into latency amplification. This would also increase the probability of over utilization of fog servers which are located in popular destinations of mobile edge devices. This creates an unbalanced network of fog devices failing to provide lower makespan and fewer cloud accesses. One solution to maintain latency within an acceptable range is the migration of fog tasks and preserve the distance between the edge devices and the available resources. Although some studies have focused on fog task migration, none of them have considered load balancing in fog nodes. Accordingly, this paper introduces LIMO; an allocation and migration strategy for establishing load balancing in fog networks based on the control loop MAPE (Monitor-Analyze-Plan-Execute) and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The periodical migration of tasks for load balancing aims to enhance the system's efficiency. The performance of LIMO has been modeled and evaluated using the Mobfogsim toolkit. The results show that this technique outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of network resource utilization with 10% improvement. A significant limitation of current smartphone-based eye-tracking algorithms is their low accuracy when applied to video-type visual stimuli, as they are typically trained on static images. Also, the increasing demand for real-time interactive applications like games, VR, and AR on smartphones requires overcoming the limitations posed by resource constraints such as limited computational power, battery life, and network bandwidth. Therefore, we developed two new smartphone eye-tracking techniques for video-type visuals by combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with two different Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), namely Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). Our CNN+LSTM and CNN+GRU models achieved an average Root Mean Square Error of 0.955cm and 1.091cm, respectively. To address the computational constraints of smartphones, we developed an edge intelligence architecture to enhance the performance of smartphone-based eye tracking. We applied various optimisation methods like quantisation and pruning to deep learning models for better energy, CPU, and memory usage on edge devices, focusing on real-time processing. Using model quantisation, the model inference time in the CNN+LSTM and CNN+GRU models was reduced by 21.72% and 19.50%, respectively, on edge devices.

Learning unknown processes affecting a quantum system reveals underlying physical mechanisms and enables suppression, mitigation, and correction of unwanted effects. Describing a general quantum process requires an exponentially large number of parameters. Measuring these parameters, when they are encoded in incompatible observables, is constrained by the uncertainty principle and requires exponentially many measurements. However, for Pauli channels, having access to an ideal quantum memory and entangling operations allows encoding parameters in commuting observables, thereby exponentially reducing measurement complexity. In practice, though, quantum memory and entangling operations are always noisy and introduce errors, making the advantage of using noisy quantum memory unclear. To address these challenges we introduce error-mitigated entanglement-enhanced learning and show, both theoretically and experimentally, that even with noise, there is a separation in efficiency between learning Pauli channels with and without entanglement with noisy quantum memory. We demonstrate our protocol's efficacy in examples including hypothesis testing with up to 64 qubits and learning inherent noise processes in a layer of parallel gates using up to 16 qubits on a superconducting quantum processor. Our protocol provides accurate and practical information about the process, with an overhead factor of $1.33 \pm 0.05$ per qubit, much smaller than the fundamental lower bound of 2 without entanglement with quantum memory. Our study demonstrates that entanglement with auxiliary noisy quantum memory combined with error mitigation considerably enhances the learning of quantum processes.

A spin-photon interface is one of the key components of a quantum network. Physical platforms under investigation span the range of modern experimental physics, from ultra-cold atoms and ions to a variety of solid-state systems. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses, typically with a trade-off between spin properties and photonic properties. Currently, the best deterministic single-photon sources use a semiconductor quantum dot embedded in an optical microcavity. However, coherent spin control has not yet been integrated with a state-of-the-art single-photon source, and the magnetic noise from host nuclear spins in the semiconductor environment has placed strong limitations on the spin coherence. Here, we combine high-fidelity all-optical spin control with a quantum dot in an open microcavity, currently the most efficient single-photon source platform available. By imprinting a microwave signal onto a red-detuned optical field, a Raman process, we demonstrate coherent rotations of a hole spin around an arbitrary axis of the Bloch sphere, achieving a maximum {\pi}-pulse fidelity of 98.6%. The cavity enhances the Raman process, enabling ultra-fast Rabi frequencies above 1 GHz. We use our flexible spin control to perform optical cooling of the nuclear spins in the host material via the central hole spin, extending the hole-spin coherence time T2* from 28 ns to 535 ns. Hahn echo preserves the spin coherence on a timescale of 20 {\mu}s, and dynamical decoupling extends the coherence close to the relaxation limit. Both the spin T2* and spin rotation time are much larger than the Purcell-enhanced radiative recombination time, 50 ps, enabling many spin-photon pairs to be created before the spin loses its coherence., Comment: 15 pages, 3 main figures, 6 supplementary figures

The estimation of low energies of many-body systems is a cornerstone of computational quantum sciences. Variational quantum algorithms can be used to prepare ground states on pre-fault-tolerant quantum processors, but their lack of convergence guarantees and impractical number of cost function estimations prevent systematic scaling of experiments to large systems. Alternatives to variational approaches are needed for large-scale experiments on pre-fault-tolerant devices. Here, we use a superconducting quantum processor to compute eigenenergies of quantum many-body systems on two-dimensional lattices of up to 56 sites, using the Krylov quantum diagonalization algorithm, an analog of the well-known classical diagonalization technique. We construct subspaces of the many-body Hilbert space using Trotterized unitary evolutions executed on the quantum processor, and classically diagonalize many-body interacting Hamiltonians within those subspaces. These experiments show that quantum diagonalization algorithms are poised to complement their classical counterpart at the foundation of computational methods for quantum systems., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

In our previous work, we introduced a method that combines two unsupervised algorithms: DBSCAN and GMM. We applied this method to 12 open clusters based on Gaia EDR3 data, demonstrating its effectiveness in identifying reliable cluster members within the tidal radius. However, for studying cluster morphology, we need a method capable of detecting members both inside and outside the tidal radius. By incorporating a supervised algorithm into our approach, we successfully identified members beyond the tidal radius. In our current work, we initially applied DBSCAN and GMM to identify reliable members of cluster stars. Subsequently, we trained the Random Forest algorithm using DBSCAN and GMM-selected data. Leveraging the random forest, we can identify cluster members outside the tidal radius and observe cluster morphology across a wide field of view. Our method was then applied to 15 open clusters based on Gaia DR3, which exhibit a wide range of metallicity, distances, members, and ages. Additionally, we calculated the tidal radius for each of the 15 clusters using the King profile and detected stars both inside and outside this radius. Finally, we investigated mass segregation and luminosity distribution within the clusters. Overall, our approach significantly improved the estimation of the tidal radius and detection of mass segregation compared to previous work. We found that in Collinder 463, low-mass stars do not segregate in comparison to high-mass and middle-mass stars. Entity summarization aims to compute concise summaries for entities in knowledge graphs. Existing datasets and benchmarks are often limited to a few hundred entities and discard graph structure in source knowledge graphs. This limitation is particularly pronounced when it comes to ground-truth summaries, where there exist only a few labeled summaries for evaluation and training. We propose WikES, a comprehensive benchmark comprising of entities, their summaries, and their connections. Additionally, WikES features a dataset generator to test entity summarization algorithms in different areas of the knowledge graph. Importantly, our approach combines graph algorithms and NLP models as well as different data sources such that WikES does not require human annotation, rendering the approach cost-effective and generalizable to multiple domains. Finally, WikES is scalable and capable of capturing the complexities of knowledge graphs in terms of topology and semantics. WikES features existing datasets for comparison. Considering the evolution of the food industry and its challenges, like high perishability, managing the food industry supply chain is a key focus for researchers and decision-makers. Uncertainty in decision-making has gained importance, particularly in the yogurt industry, known for its complexity. This study addresses production and distribution planning, scheduling, and routing in the yogurt supply chain. The problem is characterized by multiple products, a single plant, multiple distribution centers, multiple periods, and various transportation methods. A mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model is used to minimize total costs, including production, setup, overtime, unmet demand, and transportation. Additionally, a robust fuzzy programming approach is applied under uncertainty, with linearization procedures proposed to convert it into a linearized mixed-integer programming formulation. The problem is tested with two data types: a sample problem in three sizes (small, medium, and large) and real data from Kalle Dairy Company, Iran. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is developed to solve the problem, with necessary modifications made for its application. The GA's performance is compared to an exact algorithm (Branch & Cut), showing that the company's production policy adapts daily to meet demand precisely. The shift to smaller batch production and longer shelf life allows better stock allocation and avoids shortages in uncertain conditions. The company's policies adapt to severe fluctuations in the business environment, though this requires high costs, such as inventory maintenance.

This paper focuses on the physical racetrack capabilities of AWS DeepRacer. Two separate experiments were conducted. The first experiment (Experiment I) focused on evaluating the impact of hyperparameters on the physical environment. Hyperparameters such as gradient descent batch size and loss type were changed systematically as well as training time settings. The second experiment (Experiment II) focused on exploring AWS DeepRacer object avoidance in the physical environment. It was uncovered that in the simulated environment, models with a higher gradient descent batch size had better performance than models with a lower gradient descent batch size. Alternatively, in the physical environment, a gradient descent batch size of 128 appears to be preferable. It was found that models using the loss type of Huber outperformed models that used the loss type of MSE in both the simulated and physical environments. Finally, object avoidance in the simulated environment appeared to be effective; however, when bringing these models to the physical environment, there was a pronounced challenge to avoid objects. Therefore, object avoidance in the physical environment remains an open challenge.

NGC 5128 (Cen A) is the nearest giant elliptical galaxy and one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the sky, boasting a prominent dust lane and jets emanating from its nuclear supermassive black hole. In this paper, we construct the star formation history (SFH) of two small fields in the halo of NGC 5128: a northeastern field (Field 1) at a projected distance of $\sim 18.8$ kpc from the center, and a southern field (Field 2) $\sim 9.9$ kpc from the center. Our method is based on identifying long period variable (LPV) stars that trace their sibling stellar population and hence historical star formation due to their high luminosity and strong variability; we identified 395 LPVs in Field 1 and 671 LPVs in Field 2. Even though the two fields are $\sim 28$ kpc apart on opposite sides from the center, they show similar SFHs. In Field 1, star formation rates (SFRs) increased significantly around $t\sim 800$ Myr and $t\sim 3.8$ Gyr; and in Field 2, SFRs increased considerably around $t\sim 800$ Myr, $t\sim 3.8$ Gyr, and $t\sim 6.3$ Gyr, where $t$ is look--back time. The increase in SFR $\sim 800$ Myr ago agrees with previous suggestions that the galaxy experienced a merger around that time. The SFH reconstructed from LPVs supports a scenario in which multiple episodes of nuclear activity lead to episodic jet-induced star formation. While there is no catalog of LPVs for the central part of NGC 5128, applying our method to the outer regions (for the first time in a galaxy outside the Local Group) has enabled us to put constraints on the complex evolution of this cornerstone galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We describe Qiskit, a software development kit for quantum information science. We discuss the key design decisions that have shaped its development, and examine the software architecture and its core components. We demonstrate an end-to-end workflow for solving a problem in condensed matter physics on a quantum computer that serves to highlight some of Qiskit's capabilities, for example the representation and optimization of circuits at various abstraction levels, its scalability and retargetability to new gates, and the use of quantum-classical computations via dynamic circuits. Lastly, we discuss some of the ecosystem of tools and plugins that extend Qiskit for various tasks, and the future ahead.

A universal quantum computer can be used as a simulator capable of predicting properties of diverse quantum systems. Electronic structure problems in chemistry offer practical use cases around the hundred-qubit mark. This appears promising since current quantum processors have reached these sizes. However, mapping these use cases onto quantum computers yields deep circuits, and for for pre-fault-tolerant quantum processors, the large number of measurements to estimate molecular energies leads to prohibitive runtimes. As a result, realistic chemistry is out of reach of current quantum computers in isolation. A natural question is whether classical distributed computation can relieve quantum processors from parsing all but a core, intrinsically quantum component of a chemistry workflow. Here, we incorporate quantum computations of chemistry in a quantum-centric supercomputing architecture, using up to 6400 nodes of the supercomputer Fugaku to assist a Heron superconducting quantum processor. We simulate the N$_2$ triple bond breaking in a correlation-consistent cc-pVDZ basis set, and the active-space electronic structure of [2Fe-2S] and [4Fe-4S] clusters, using 58, 45 and 77 qubits respectively, with quantum circuits of up to 10570 (3590 2-qubit) quantum gates. We obtain our results using a class of quantum circuits that approximates molecular eigenstates, and a hybrid estimator. The estimator processes quantum samples, produces upper bounds to the ground-state energy and wavefunctions supported on a polynomial number of states. This guarantees an unconditional quality metric for quantum advantage, certifiable by classical computers at polynomial cost. For current error rates, our results show that classical distributed computing coupled to quantum processors can produce good approximate solutions for practical problems beyond sizes amenable to exact diagonalization.

Wu in 1999 conjectured that if $H$ is a subgraph of the complete graph $K_{2n+1}$ with $n$ edges, then there is a Hamiltonian cycle decomposition of $K_{2n+1}$ such that each edge of $H$ is in a separate Hamiltonian cycle. The conjecture was partially settled by Liu and Chen (2023) in cases that $|V(H)|\leq n+1$, $H$ is a linear forest, or $n\leq 5$. In this paper, we settle the conjecture completely. This result can be viewed as a complete graph analogous of Evans conjecture and has some applications in linear arboricity conjecture and restricted size Ramsey numbers.

This paper presents the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of RicMonk, a novel three-link brachiation robot equipped with passive hook-shaped grippers. Brachiation, an agile and energy-efficient mode of locomotion observed in primates, has inspired the development of RicMonk to explore versatile locomotion and maneuvers on ladder-like structures. The robot's anatomical resemblance to gibbons and the integration of a tail mechanism for energy injection contribute to its unique capabilities. The paper discusses the use of the Direct Collocation methodology for optimizing trajectories for the robot's dynamic behaviors and stabilization of these trajectories using a Time-varying Linear Quadratic Regulator. With RicMonk we demonstrate bidirectional brachiation, and provide comparative analysis with its predecessor, AcroMonk - a two-link brachiation robot, to demonstrate that the presence of a passive tail helps improve energy efficiency. In this paper, we consider the downlink transmission of a multi-antenna base station (BS) supported by an active simultaneously transmitting and reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) to serve single-antenna users via simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). In this context, we formulate an energy efficiency maximisation problem that jointly optimises the gain, element selection and phase shift matrices of the active STAR-RIS, the transmit beamforming of the BS and the power splitting ratio of the users. With respect to the highly coupled and non-convex form of this problem, an alternating optimisation solution approach is proposed, using tools from convex optimisation and reinforcement learning. Specifically, semi-definite relaxation (SDR), difference of concave functions (DC), and fractional programming techniques are employed to transform the non-convex optimisation problem into a convex form for optimising the BS beamforming vector and the power splitting ratio of the SWIPT. Then, by integrating meta-learning with the modified deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) and soft actor-critical (SAC) methods, a combinatorial reinforcement learning network is developed to optimise the element selection, gain and phase shift matrices of the active STAR-RIS. Our simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation scheme. Furthermore, our proposed active STAR-RIS-based SWIPT system outperforms its passive counterpart by 57% on average.

Burning fossil fuels emits a significant amount of CO2, causing climate change concerns. CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) aims to reduce emissions, with fullerenes showing promise as CO2 adsorbents. Recent research focuses on modifying fullerenes using an electric field. In light of this, we carried out DFT studies on some B, N, and P doped C20 (C20-nXn (n = 0, 1, 2, and 3; X = B, N, and P)) in the absence and presence of an electric field in the range of 0-0.02 a.u.. The cohesive energy was calculated to ensure their thermodynamic stability showing, that despite having lesser cohesive energies than C20, they appear in a favorable range. Moreover, the charge distribution for all structures was depicted using the ESP map. Most importantly, we evaluated the adsorption energy, height, and CO2 angle, demonstrating the B and N-doped fullerenes had the stronger interaction with CO2, which by far exceeded C20's, improving its physisorption to physicochemical adsorption. Although the adsorption energy of P-doped fullerenes was not as satisfactory, in most cases, increasing the electric field led to enhancing CO2 adsorption and incorporating chemical attributes to CO2-fullerene interaction. The HOMO--LUMO plots were obtained by which we discovered that unlike the P-doped C20, the surprising activity of B and N-doped C20s against CO2 originates from a high concentration of the HOMO-LUMO orbitals on B and N atoms. Additionally, the charge distribution for all structures was depicted using the ESP map. In the present article, we attempt to introduce more effective fullerene-based materials for CO2 capture as well as strategies to enhance their efficiency and revealing adsorption nature over B, N, and P-doped fullerenes.

Mounting a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) holds promise for improving traditional terrestrial network performance. Unlike conventional methods deploying passive RIS on UAVs, this study delves into the efficacy of an aerial active RIS (AARIS). Specifically, the downlink transmission of an AARIS network is investigated, where the base station (BS) leverages rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) for effective interference management and benefits from the support of an AARIS for jointly amplifying and reflecting the BS's transmit signals. Considering both the non-trivial energy consumption of the active RIS and the limited energy storage of the UAV, we propose an innovative element selection strategy for optimizing the on/off status of RIS elements, which adaptively and remarkably manages the system's power consumption. To this end, a resource management problem is formulated, aiming to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BS, the element activation, the phase shift and the amplification factor at the RIS, the RSMA common data rate at users, as well as the UAV's trajectory. Due to the dynamicity nature of UAV and user mobility, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm is designed for resource allocation, utilizing meta-learning to adaptively handle fast time-varying system dynamics. Simulations indicate that incorporating an active RIS at the UAV leads to substantial EE gain, compared to passive RIS-aided UAV. We observe the superiority of the RSMA-based AARIS system in terms of EE, compared to existing approaches adopting non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA).

Coherent errors, and especially those that occur in correlation among a set of qubits, are detrimental for large-scale quantum computing. Correlations in noise can occur as a result of spatial and temporal configurations of instructions executing on the quantum processor. In this paper, we perform a detailed experimental characterization of many of these error sources, and theoretically connect them to the physics of superconducting qubits and gate operations. Equipped with this knowledge, we devise compiler strategies to suppress these errors using dynamical decoupling or error compensation into the rest of the circuit. Importantly, these strategies are successful when the context at each layer of computation is taken into account: how qubits are connected, what crosstalk terms exist on the device, and what gates or idle periods occur in that layer. Our context-aware compiler thus suppresses some dominant sources of error, making further error mitigation or error correction substantially less expensive. For example, our experiments show an increase of 18.5\% in layer fidelity for a candidate 10-qubit circuit layer compared to context-unaware suppression. Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems with multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently been explored to support energy-limited devices via simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT). The energy consumption, however, becomes considerable by increasing the number of incorporated LEDs. This paper proposes a joint dimming (JD) scheme that lowers the consumed power of a SLIPT-enabled OWC system by controlling the number of active LEDs. We further enhance the data rate of this system by utilizing rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). More specifically, we formulate a data rate maximization problem to optimize the beamforming design, LED selection and RSMA rate adaptation that guarantees the power budget of the OWC transmitter, as well as the quality-of-service (QoS) and an energy harvesting level for users. We propose a dynamic resource allocation solution based on proximal policy optimization (PPO) reinforcement learning. In simulations, the optimal dimming level is determined to initiate a trade-off between the data rate and power consumption. Data availability is crucial for advancing artificial intelligence applications, including voice-based technologies. As content creation, particularly in social media, experiences increasing demand, translation and text-to-speech (TTS) technologies have become essential tools. Notably, the performance of these TTS technologies is highly dependent on the quality of the training data, emphasizing the mutual dependence of data availability and technological progress. This paper introduces an end-to-end tool to generate high-quality datasets for text-to-speech (TTS) models to address this critical need for high-quality data. The contributions of this work are manifold and include: the integration of language-specific phoneme distribution into sample selection, automation of the recording process, automated and human-in-the-loop quality assurance of recordings, and processing of recordings to meet specified formats. The Segment Anything Model (SAM), a foundation model pretrained on millions of images and segmentation masks, has significantly advanced semantic segmentation, a fundamental task in computer vision. Despite its strengths, SAM encounters two major challenges. Firstly, it struggles with segmenting specific objects autonomously, as it relies on users to manually input prompts like points or bounding boxes to identify targeted objects. Secondly, SAM faces challenges in excelling at specific downstream tasks, like medical imaging, due to a disparity between the distribution of its pretraining data, which predominantly consists of general-domain images, and the data used in downstream tasks. Current solutions to these problems, which involve finetuning SAM, often lead to overfitting, a notable issue in scenarios with very limited data, like in medical imaging. To overcome these limitations, we introduce BLO-SAM, which finetunes SAM based on bi-level optimization (BLO). Our approach allows for automatic image segmentation without the need for manual prompts, by optimizing a learnable prompt embedding. Furthermore, it significantly reduces the risk of overfitting by training the model's weight parameters and the prompt embedding on two separate subsets of the training dataset, each at a different level of optimization. We apply BLO-SAM to diverse semantic segmentation tasks in general and medical domains. The results demonstrate BLO-SAM's superior performance over various state-of-the-art image semantic segmentation methods.

A quantum emitter interacting with photons in a single optical-mode constitutes a one-dimensional atom. A coherent and efficiently coupled one-dimensional atom provides a large nonlinearity, enabling photonic quantum gates. Achieving a high coupling efficiency ($\beta$-factor) and low dephasing is challenging. Here, we use a semiconductor quantum dot in an open microcavity as an implementation of a one-dimensional atom. With a weak laser input, we achieve an extinction of $99.2\%$ in transmission and a concomitant bunching in the photon statistics of $g^{(2)}(0) = 587$, showcasing the reflection of the single-photon component and the transmission of the multi-photon components of the coherent input. The tunable nature of the microcavity allows $\beta$ to be adjusted and gives control over the photon statistics -- from strong bunching to anti-bunching -- and the phase of the transmitted photons. We obtain excellent agreement between experiment and theory by going beyond the single-mode Jaynes-Cummings model. Our results pave the way towards the creation of exotic photonic states and two-photon phase gates.

In this paper, we first prove a theorem by a little modification on the Lax-Milgram theorem. Then, using $K$-frames, we obtain lower and upper bounds for the results obtained from this theorem. Also, we present some methods for the characterization of scalable $K$-frames. Finally, we introduce piecewise scalable $K$-frames and give necessary and sufficient conditions for a $K$-frame to be piecewise scalable.

Bosonic quantum computing, based on the infinite-dimensional qumodes, has shown promise for various practical applications that are classically hard. However, the lack of compiler optimizations has hindered its full potential. This paper introduces Bosehedral, an efficient compiler optimization framework for (Gaussian) Boson sampling on Bosonic quantum hardware. Bosehedral overcomes the challenge of handling infinite-dimensional qumode gate matrices by performing all its program analysis and optimizations at a higher algorithmic level, using a compact unitary matrix representation. It optimizes qumode gate decomposition and logical-to-physical qumode mapping, and introduces a tunable probabilistic gate dropout method. Overall, Bosehedral significantly improves the performance by accurately approximating the original program with much fewer gates. Our evaluation shows that Bosehedral can largely reduce the program size but still maintain a high approximation fidelity, which can translate to significant end-to-end application performance improvement.

Vision transformers are known to be more computationally and data-intensive than CNN models. These transformer models such as ViT, require all the input image tokens to learn the relationship among them. However, many of these tokens are not informative and may contain irrelevant information such as unrelated background or unimportant scenery. These tokens are overlooked by the multi-head self-attention (MHSA), resulting in many redundant and unnecessary computations in MHSA and the feed-forward network (FFN). In this work, we propose a method to optimize the amount of unnecessary interactions between unimportant tokens by separating and sending them through a different low-cost computational path. Our method does not add any parameters to the ViT model and aims to find the best trade-off between training throughput and achieving a 0% loss in the Top-1 accuracy of the final model. Our experimental results on training ViT-small from scratch show that SkipViT is capable of effectively dropping 55% of the tokens while gaining more than 13% training throughput and maintaining classification accuracy at the level of the baseline model on Huawei Ascend910A.

In the realm of automatic speech recognition (ASR), the quest for models that not only perform with high accuracy but also offer transparency in their decision-making processes is crucial. The potential of quality estimation (QE) metrics is introduced and evaluated as a novel tool to enhance explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in ASR systems. Through experiments and analyses, the capabilities of the NoRefER (No Reference Error Rate) metric are explored in identifying word-level errors to aid post-editors in refining ASR hypotheses. The investigation also extends to the utility of NoRefER in the corpus-building process, demonstrating its effectiveness in augmenting datasets with insightful annotations. The diagnostic aspects of NoRefER are examined, revealing its ability to provide valuable insights into model behaviors and decision patterns. This has proven beneficial for prioritizing hypotheses in post-editing workflows and fine-tuning ASR models. The findings suggest that NoRefER is not merely a tool for error detection but also a comprehensive framework for enhancing ASR systems' transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness. To ensure the reproducibility of the results, all source codes of this study are made publicly available.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) is a cutting-edge concept for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a novel system that incorporates STAR-RIS with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) using rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). The proposed system facilitates communication from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to single-antenna users in a downlink transmission. The BS concurrently sends energy and information signals to multiple energy harvesting receivers (EHRs) and information data receivers (IDRs) with the support of a deployed STAR-RIS. Furthermore, an optimization is introduced to strike a balance between users' sum rate and the total harvested energy. To achieve this, an optimization problem is formulated to optimize the energy/information beamforming vectors at the BS, the phase shifts at the STAR-RIS, and the common message rate. Subsequently, we employ a meta deep deterministic policy gradient (Meta-DDPG) approach to solve the complex problem. Simulation results validate that the proposed algorithm significantly enhances both data rate and harvested energy in comparison to conventional DDPG.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) is a novel technology which enables the full-space coverage. In this letter, a multi STAR-RIS-aided system using non-orthogonal multiple access in an uplink transmission is considered, where the multi-order reflections among multiple STAR-RISs assist the transmission from the single-antenna users to the multi-antenna base station. Specifically, the total sum rate maximization problem is solved by jointly optimizing the active beamforming, power allocation, transmission and reflection beamforming at the STAR-RIS, and user-STAR-RIS assignment. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed which integrates meta-learning and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), denoted by Meta-DDPG. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed Meta-DDPG algorithm outperforms the conventional DDPG algorithm with $53\%$ improvement, while multi-order reflections among multi STAR-RISs yields to $14.1\%$ enhancement in the total data rate.

Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Hard computational tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their simulation, analysis, and data resources. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. We present experiments in which self-assembled InAs quantum dots are coupled to a thin, suspended-beam GaAs resonator. The quantum dots are driven resonantly and the resonance fluorescence is detected. The narrow quantum-dot linewidths, just a factor of three larger than the transform limit, result in a high sensitivity to the mechanical motion. We show that one quantum dot couples to eight mechanical modes spanning a frequency range from $30$ to $600~\mathrm{MHz}$: one quantum dot provides an extensive characterisation of the mechanical resonator. The coupling spans the unresolved-sideband to the resolved-sideband regimes. Finally, we present the first detection of thermally-driven phonon sidebands (at $4.2~\mathrm{K}$) in the resonance-fluoresence spectrum.

A promising route towards the heralded creation and annihilation of single-phonons is to couple a single-photon emitter to a mechanical resonator. The challenge lies in reaching the resolved-sideband regime with a large coupling rate and a high mechanical quality factor. We achieve all of this by coupling self-assembled InAs quantum dots to a small-mode-volume phononic-crystal resonator with mechanical frequency $\Omega_\mathrm{m}/2\pi = 1.466~\mathrm{GHz}$ and quality factor $Q_\mathrm{m} = 2.1\times10^3$. Thanks to the high coupling rate of $g_\mathrm{ep}/2\pi = 2.9~\mathrm{MHz}$, and by exploiting a matching condition between the effective Rabi and mechanical frequencies, we are able to observe the interaction between the two systems. Our results represent a major step towards quantum control of the mechanical resonator via a single-photon emitter.

Massive transformer-based models face several challenges, including slow and computationally intensive pre-training and over-parametrization. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing a versatile method called GQKVA, which generalizes query, key, and value grouping techniques. GQKVA is designed to speed up transformer pre-training while reducing the model size. Our experiments with various GQKVA variants highlight a clear trade-off between performance and model size, allowing for customized choices based on resource and time limitations. Our findings also indicate that the conventional multi-head attention approach is not always the best choice, as there are lighter and faster alternatives available. We tested our method on ViT, which achieved an approximate 0.3% increase in accuracy while reducing the model size by about 4% in the task of image classification. Additionally, our most aggressive model reduction experiment resulted in a reduction of approximately 15% in model size, with only around a 1% drop in accuracy.
