The use of radio frequency for water and wastewater treatment is a topic that has not been extensively explored. In this study, the effect of a HydroFlow S38 device (Hydropath Holdigs) inducing 150 KHz radio frequency (RF) has been investigated, removing color, forming coagulant flocs and their sedimentation, and the removal of bacteria. Experiments were first conducted on synthetic samples, and then on landfill leachate from the Aradkooh waste processing and landfilling complex (Kahrizak) in Tehran, Iran. The results of the experiments showed that RF had little to no effect on de-coloring in the absence or presence of sodium hypochlorite. Also, the coagulation and flocculation of ferric chloride remained unaffected. However, the use of RF was shown to reduce the number of bacteria significantly. The inductance of RF alone, without any other aid or chemical/physical treatment, was able to reduce the bacterial count by 35%. These findings provide motivation for future research regarding the use of RF for bacteria inactivation.

The freeze-thaw induced damage of rock affects the durability and serviceability of geo-structures, especially those constructed in the regions frequently impacted by climatic changes. A series of laboratory tests including P-wave velocity tests, freeze-thaw tests, uniaxial compression strength (UCS) tests and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) tests are conducted to investigate the physical-mechanical properties and failure behaviours of Tasmanian sandstones subjected to various freeze-thaw cycles. It is observed that the P-wave velocity, BTS and UCS of the sandstone decrease as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases, in which the decreasing rate from 0 to 20 freeze-thaw cycles was more pronounced than that from 20 to 40 and 40 to 60 freeze-thaw cycles. Moreover, it is found that the main failure mode of the sandstone changes from axial splitting to shearing along a single plane in the UCS tests and from central smooth fractures to a central zigzag fracture in the BTS tests with the number of freeze-thaw cycles increasing. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical modellings are then conducted using a self-developed 3D hybrid finite-discrete element method (HFDEM) parallelized on the basis of general-purpose graphic processing units (GPGPU) to further investigate the failure mechanisms of Tasmanian sandstones subjected to various freeze-thaw cycles in the UCS and BTS tests. The 3D numerical modellings agree very well with the experimental observations that the physical-mechanical parameters of the sandstone degrade with the increasing number of the freeze-thaw cycles. Moreover, the 3D numerical modellings reveal the deterioration and failure mechanisms of sandstones subjected to various freeze-thaw cycles. For the sandstone specimens without subjecting to freeze-thaw cycles, axial splitting is the main failure pattern while tensile and mixed-mode damages are the dominant failure mechanism in the UCS tests. For the sandstone subjecting to various freeze-thaw cycles, the increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles causes the macroscopic cracks to propagate, interact and coalesce in the shear behaviour resulting in the final shear fracture pattern in the UCS test. The 3D numerical modellings of the BTS test show that, although, for both the models with and without subjecting to freezing and thawing cycles, a central fracture is the eventual failure pattern, the failure surface becomes more zigzag as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases.

This study examines the results from an investigation on the impact resistance of oil palm shells (OPS) concrete. The use of OPS as a substitute for regular aggregate in lightweight concrete will help reduce its negative environmental influence. There is a lack of research on the impact resistance and crack behaviour of concrete; specifically in OPS lightweight concrete reinforced by polypropylene (PP) fibre. The replication of a low-velocity projectile effect on slab samples was achieved by dropping two types of steel ball (weighing 0.380 kg and 1.25 kg), with drop height of 360 mm, through the utilization of a self-fabricated drop-weight impact test rig. A total of 12 cube specimens, with dimensions 100 × 100 × 100 mm, were used to prepare 36 slabs with various thicknesses. The 36 slabs were prepared using a concrete cutting machine to excise the three cube specimens from each mixture, into 20, 30 and 40 mm thicknesses. Impact resistance tests were then performed on them. The results demonstrate that there was a strong linear relation between volume fraction of PP fibre and impact resistance; as well as crack resistance ratio. This relation was indefeasible by changing the thickness from 20 mm to 30 mm and 40 mm. Although increasing the thickness improved the impact resistance significantly, the effect was more pronounced for ultimate failure crack resistance than for first crack resistance.

As concrete has high specific heat and low thermal conductivity, it has a high capacity to bear high temperatures and fire (Tanyildizi and Coskun 2008). Nevertheless, high temperatures are found to have an impact on its features like surface appearance, elasticity, colour, compressive strength and concrete density. When a new construction material is used, it is important to study and understand all the behavioural aspects of that material because human safety in case of any mishaps such as a fire outbreak is one of the key factors to be considered in the design of buildings.

The durability of buildings which depends on the nature of the supervisory system used in their construction is an important feature of the construction industry. This article tries to draw the readers' attention to the effect of untrained and unprofessional building supervisors and their unethical performance on the durability of buildings.

Many years ago unprofessional supervisors were identified as one of the main reasons for the withdrawal of a student’s study. Recently in some universities, unethical supervision has become an increasing concern of students and ethic committees.

This paper reports the results of a study conducted to investigate the effect of superplasticizer (SP) dosage on the slump, density, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength under different curing conditions of a lightweight aggregate concrete reinforced with polypropylene (PP) fiber. The lightweight aggregate used in this study was oil palm shell, which is an agricultural solid waste, originating from the palm oil industry. The results indicated that an increase in superplasticizer increased the workability, however, all the mechanical properties declined significantly. The reduction in the 28-day compressive and splitting tensile strengths was about 14. This study showed that although additional SP can improve the workability of the concrete, it may have a negative effect on the other properties of concrete. Therefore, the SP dosage in concrete mixtures containing PP fiber should be limited to a certain amount.
