2. History-Matching of Imbibition Flow in Multiscale Fractured Porous Media Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs)

Abstract

We propose a workflow based on physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to model multiphase fluid flow in fractured porous media. After validating the workflow in forward and inverse modeling of a synthetic problem of flow in fractured porous media, we applied it to a real experimental dataset in which brine is injected at a constant pressure drop into a CO2 saturated naturally fractured shale core plug. The exact spatial positions of natural fractures and the dynamic in-situ distribution of fluids were imaged using a CT-scan setup. To model the targeted system, we followed a domain decomposition approach for matrix and fractures and a multi-network architecture for the separate calculation of water saturation and pressure. The flow equations in the matrix, fractures and interplay between them were solved during training. Prior to fully-coupled simulations, we proposed pre-training the model. This aided in a more efficient and successful training of the coupled system. Both for the synthetic and experimental inverse problems, we determined flow parameters within the matrix and the fractures. Multiple random initializations of network and system parameters were performed to assess the uncertainty and uniqueness of the results. The results confirmed the precision of the inverse calculated parameters in retrieving the main flow characteristics of the system. The consideration of multiscale matrix-fracture impacts is commonly overlooked in existing workflows. Accounting for them led to several orders of magnitude variations in the calculated flow properties compared to not accounting for them. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed PINNs-based workflow is the first to offer a reliable and computationally efficient solution for inverse modeling of multiphase flow in fractured porous media, achieved through history-matching noisy and multi-fidelity experimental measurements., Comment: 47 pages of paper, including 19 figures

Abstract

Multimodal models, which combine visual and textual information, have recently gained significant recognition. This paper addresses the multimodal challenge of Text-Image retrieval and introduces a novel task that extends the modalities to include temporal data. The Temporal Image Caption Retrieval Competition (TICRC) presented in this paper is based on the Chronicling America and Challenging America projects, which offer access to an extensive collection of digitized historic American newspapers spanning 274 years. In addition to the competition results, we provide an analysis of the delivered dataset and the process of its creation.

4. The Role of Human Rights in Investment Arbitrations: Towards a Closer Integration

Abstract

This article examines the role of human rights in international investment arbitration. A review of the historical origins of human rights and international investment law shows that the two fields are inextricably connected and share significant similarities, particularly in terms of their norms and principles. However, their separate origins and development has also given rise to ambiguities and tensions as to how human rights considerations can be invoked in international investment arbitration and by whom. The article examines the various contexts of such invocations and analyzes human rights references in investment treaties. It argues that ambiguities and tensions are especially problematic because they carry not merely theoretical but practical implications. It shows that the trend of convergence and overlap between the two fields is growing and concludes by arguing that greater integration of human rights law into international investment law and arbitration is not only desirable but essential for the unification of public international law and addressing many of its ambiguities.

5. Theoretical comparison of two setups for capillary pressure measurement by centrifuge

Abstract

There are several approaches for the calculation of capillary pressure curves in porous media including the centrifuge method. In this work, a new installation of centrifuge test is introduced and compared with the traditional setup. In the first setup, which is a standard approach in labs, the core face closest to the rotational axis is open to the non-wetting phase, while the farthest face is open to the wetting phase where strictly co-current flow is generated in rotations; labeled Two-Ends-Open (TEO). In the second setup, which is proposed as a new approach, only the outer radius surface is open and is exposed to the light non-wetting phase; labeled One-End-Open (OEO). This setup strictly induces counter-current flow. The two systems and their corresponding boundary conditions are formulated mathematically and solved by a fully implicit numerical solver. The TEO setup is validated by comparison with commercial software. Experimental data from the literature are used to parameterize the models. It is mathematically, and with examples, demonstrated that the same equilibrium is obtained in both systems with the same rotational speed, and changing the installation does not influence the measured capillary pressure. This equilibrium state is only dependent on the rotational speed, rock capillary pressure properties, and fluid densities, not the installation geometry, relative permeabilities, or fluid viscosities. However, the dynamic transition trend and saturation profiles were found to be dependent on the applied installation. It was observed that the OEO setup takes almost identical equilibration time as the TEO setup for mixed-wet states, although it needed much longer time in water-wet states. The presence of threshold capillary pressure significantly increased the time scale of the OEO setup. Also, it was found that in contradiction to the TEO setup, the dynamic saturation profile in OEO was rarely influenced by viscosity ratio. To conclude, the performed history matching analysis demonstrated that the OEO setup can be applied for the calculation of counter-current relative permeability from the production data with reasonable accuracy.

Abstract

Saudi Arabia has now opened its markets to foreign investors in line with its strategy to diversify its economy. However, investors need to feel confident that Saudi enterprises are being monitored and regulated appropriately. This study identifies the impact of improvements in Saudi corporate governance practices among insurance firms. The effects of corporate governance on the financial performance of 35 insurance firms listed on the Saudi stock market are examined from 2008 to 2014, including Shariah-compliant and life insurance firms. Four different methodologies are used: the generalised least squares random effect, fixed effect models, a difference-in-differences (DID) measurement for comparisons, and the probit model with average marginal effect to address endogeneity. The results indicate that firm performance is affected by information asymmetry. The 2009 exogenous shock from the Saudi regulatory change to board composition and audit committee size shows a positive effect on performance in the DID comparison. However, an increase in independent board and audit committee members has a significant negative effect. Other findings indicate that an increase in CEO (Chief Executive Officer) age has a positive effect on performance, as do three pay variables (director incentives, CEO and top executive pay, and above-the-mean director incentives). However, when CEO and top executive pay increases above the mean, the effect turns negative; this also happens with a change in CEO from poor performance. The results support the importance of Saudi insurance industry corporate governance regulation and reflect the improved governance perspectives of the Saudi Capital Market Authority and Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency.

8. The Relationship Between Language Barrier in Non-Arabic Nurses and Anxiety in Cardiovascular Patients: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study

Abstract

Patients with cardiac conditions may suffer from anxiety related to prognosis and further rehabilitation. Anxiety could be exacerbated by different factors including miscommunication, which could be attributed to the linguistic barrier, that exists among health care providers. At Saud Al-Babtain Cardiac Center (SBCC), nurses who are non-native Arabic speakers could have difficulty communicating disease-related information at different stages of nursing care. Is it possible to identify the language barrier as a source of anxiety for admitted patients with cardiac diseases? In this cross-sectional, descriptive study, 50 patients were included following the diagnosis of cardiac disease and post-cardiac surgery. A questionnaire that measures anxiety level showed that patients who were handled by Arabic-speaking nurses reported less collective mean for the anxiety domain statements of (20.08) versus those who were handled by Non-Arabic-speaking nurses (28.55, P value = .041). Our finding indicates that anxiety levels increased when there was a language barrier between nurses and patients, which could affect the quality of care delivery at SBCC.

11. Two Approaches to Diachronic Normalization of Polish Texts

Abstract

This paper discusses two approaches to the diachronic normalization of Polish texts: a rule-based solution that relies on a set of handcrafted patterns, and a neural normalization model based on the text-to-text transfer transformer architecture. The training and evaluation data prepared for the task are discussed in detail, along with experiments conducted to compare the proposed normalization solutions. A quantitative and qualitative analysis is made. It is shown that at the current stage of inquiry into the problem, the rule-based solution outperforms the neural one on 3 out of 4 variants of the prepared dataset, although in practice both approaches have distinct advantages and disadvantages., Comment: Accepted to the LaTeCH-CLfL 2024 workshop

22. A Comparative Analysis of Educational, Employment, Social Status, and Healthcare Access Outcomes between Deaf and Non-Deaf Migrants

Abstract

Migrants face various challenges in new environments, which are further compounded for those with sensory disabilities. Deaf migrants often encounter unique obstacles that affect their integration and quality of life. This study aims to explore disparities in education, employment, social integration, and healthcare access between deaf and non-deaf migrants. This research employed quantitative methods including logistic regression and Mann-Whitney U tests to analyse data collected from both deaf and non-deaf migrant groups. The study adjusted for demographic variables to isolate the effects of hearing status on various outcomes. Findings indicate that deaf migrants are less likely to achieve higher educational levels and are employed at lower rates compared to non-deaf migrants. Additionally, deaf migrants reported significantly lower subjective social status and faced greater barriers in accessing healthcare services, attributed to communication difficulties and insufficient support systems. The results underscore significant disparities faced by deaf migrants in critical areas of life. These challenges are primarily due to systemic barriers and a lack of adequate resources and accommodations that address their specific needs. The study highlights the need for targeted policies and programs to enhance educational opportunities, employment support, social integration, and healthcare accessibility for deaf migrants, ensuring their successful integration and participation in society.

Abstract

Direct electron detection is currently revolutionizing many fields of electron microscopy due to its lower noise, its reduced point-spread function, and its increased quantum efficiency. More specifically to this work, Timepix3 is a hybrid-pixel direct electron detector capable of outputting temporal information of individual hits in its pixel array. Its architecture results in a data-driven detector, also called event-based, in which individual hits trigger the data off the chip for readout as fast as possible. The presence of a pixel threshold value results in an almost readout-noise-free detector while also defining the hit time of arrival and the time the signal stays over the pixel threshold. In this work, we have performed various experiments to calibrate and correct the Timepix3 temporal information, specifically in the context of electron microscopy. These include the energy calibration, and the time-walk and pixel delay corrections, reaching an average temporal resolution throughout the entire pixel matrix of $1.37 \pm 0.04$ ns. Additionally, we have also studied cosmic rays tracks to characterize the charge dynamics along the volume of the sensor layer, allowing us to estimate the limits of the detector's temporal response depending on different bias voltages, sensor thickness, and the electron beam ionization volume. We have estimated the uncertainty due to the ionization volume ranging from about 0.8 ns for 60 keV electrons to 8.8 ns for 300 keV electrons.

26. Simulation and Prediction of Countercurrent Spontaneous Imbibition at Early and Late Times Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks

Abstract

The application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) is investigated for the first time in solving the one-dimensional Countercurrent spontaneous imbibition (COUCSI) problem at both early and late time (i.e., before and after the imbibition front meets the no-flow boundary). We introduce utilization of Change-of-Variables as a technique for improving performance of PINNs. We formulated the COUCSI problem in three equivalent forms by changing the independent variables. The first describes saturation as function of normalized position X and time T; the second as function of X and Y=T^0.5; and the third as a sole function of Z=X/T^0.5 (valid only at early time). The PINN model was generated using a feed-forward neural network and trained based on minimizing a weighted loss function, including the physics-informed loss term and terms corresponding to the initial and boundary conditions. All three formulations could closely approximate the correct solutions, with water saturation mean absolute errors around 0.019 and 0.009 for XT and XY formulations and 0.012 for the Z formulation at early time. The Z formulation perfectly captured the self-similarity of the system at early time. This was less captured by XT and XY formulations. The total variation of saturation was preserved in the Z formulation, and it was better preserved with XY- than XT formulation. Redefining the problem based on the physics-inspired variables reduced the non-linearity of the problem and allowed higher solution accuracies, a higher degree of loss-landscape convexity, a lower number of required collocation points, smaller network sizes, and more computationally efficient solutions.

Abstract

Financial markets in Lebanon are constrained by government influence, Islamic financial principles, and some barriers to foreign participation. Productivity in the Lebanese financial sector ranks below its occidental counterpart in spite the fact that regulatory, supervisory, and accounting standards are generally consistent with international norms. This paper aims to give the reasons and recommendations of the failure of applying the optimal management information system in the Lebanese Financial Sector. Our results show that the reasons include among others the systems by it selves, their functionalities, but also, companies’ strategy and human capital issues.

Abstract

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a highly prevalent disease. We aimed to assess the symptoms that physicians who see patients with AR perceive as the most bothersome in their patients. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study based on an online questionnaire sent to all members of the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative. The survey included questions on the physicians' perceptions of patients’ AR symptoms as well as of their own AR symptoms. Results: Among 401 respondents, 155 (38.7%) reported having AR. ARIA members reported nasal symptoms to be the most frequent (89.7%) and bothersome (80.0%) symptoms experienced by themselves. Likewise, nasal symptoms were reported by ARIA members as the most frequent (94.8% in members with AR vs 96.0% in members without AR) and bothersome (57.0% in members with AR vs 67.9% in members without AR) in their patients. We found a significant association (p = 0.001) between physicians’ own symptoms and those perceived as the most bothersome in their patients. Conclusion: Physicians perceive nasal symptoms to be the most frequent and the most bothersome symptoms in AR patients. The physicians' personal experiences with AR may influence their perception of patients’ symptoms.

Abstract

Surveillance data from wildlife and poultry was used to describe the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in British Columbia (B.C.) and the Yukon, Canada from September 2022 – June 2023 compared to the first “wave” of the outbreak in this region, which occurred April – August 2022, after the initial viral introduction. Although the number of HPAI-positive poultry farms and wildlife samples was greater in “Wave 2”, cases were more tightly clustered in southwestern B.C. and the most commonly affected species differed, likely due to an influx of overwintering waterfowl in the area. Eight HPAI genetic clusters, representing seven genotypes and two inter-continental viral incursions, were detected, with significant variation in the relative abundance of each cluster between the waves. Phylogenetic data suggests multiple spillover events from wild birds to poultry and mammals but could not rule out transmission among farms and among mammals.

Abstract

Background Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are the leading cause of disability worldwide. In MSK care, access to physical therapy is a major issue. The effectiveness of telerehabilitation phone assessment in improving access to care for MSK conditions has not yet been established in Saudi Arabia. Purpose To compare the effect of using a telerehabilitation phone with face-to-face care initial assessment on access to care, number of sessions and goals achievement at discharge. Methods This is a retrospective unmatched case-control analysis of a total of 724 Epic ® Electronic Medical Records guided by the Evidence standards framework for digital health technologies. Closed referrals from January 1st, 2022, to August 4th, 2022, for adults referred to Physical Therapy for MSK conditions were included. Participants who received a phone assessment were compared to those who received face-to-face care. The t-test was used to compare the means of the lead time, days to second appointment and number of treatment sessions. Univariate logistic regression was conducted to obtain the odds ratio of the outcome factors in the phone group. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ .05. Additionally,we compared the percentage of goal achievement at discharge. Abstract

The purpose of this paper is trifold -- to serve as an instructive resource and a reference catalog for biologically plausible modeling with i) conductance-based models, coupled with ii) strength-varying slow synapse models, culminating in iii) two canonical pair-wise rhythm-generating networks. We document the properties of basic network components: cell models and synaptic models, which are prerequisites for proper network assembly. Using the slow-fast decomposition we present a detailed analysis of the cellular dynamics including a discussion of the most relevant bifurcations. Several approaches to model synaptic coupling are also discussed, and a new logistic model of slow synapses is introduced. Finally, we describe and examine two types of bicellular rhythm-generating networks: i) half-center oscillators ii) excitatory-inhibitory pairs and elucidate a key principle -- the network hysteresis underlying the stable onset of emergent slow bursting in these neural building blocks. These two cell networks are a basis for more complicated neural circuits of rhythmogensis and feature in our models of swim central pattern generators.

41. The Hidden Side of Learning English as a Socially Motivated Behavior in Iran Educational System

Abstract

The field of SLA is not without other distinguished contestants, but in the history of controversial concepts, motivation alongside emotion must, by any reckoning, emerge as the overall victor. Acknowledging the controversies surrounding the concept, this study aimed at presenting how foreign language learning as a motivated behavior can be investigated through a social theory with a different ontological outlook. The results revealed that learning English is a motivated behavior in which passing tests is the predominant goal and attending standard English classes is the primary path toward that goal. It turned out the social theory holds up for Iranian English learners and all types of motivated behavior were found and thematically described in the sample. There was a significant difference between different types, structural and nonstructural types, and males and females. Based on the results, the structural type, which is supposed to present the one that the educational structure aims to promote, does not appeal to both genders. The study concludes with the fact that the dominance of predefined structures in the educational setting, which could easily affect teachers' mental framework, might lead to neglecting differences, wrongly labeling learners, and bringing frustrations for both themselves and their students.

Abstract

Key Clinical Message In patients with SLE, concurrent NMOSD can manifest with optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. AQP‐4 antibody positivity confirms the diagnosis. Prompt treatment is critical to manage the acute symptoms and prevent relapses, as highlighted by a young patient's case with optic neuritis and extensive spinal cord lesions. Abstract Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that affects the optic nerve and spinal cord. It is associated with autoantibodies against aquaporin‐4 (AQP‐4) and/or myelin oligodendrocytes glycoproteins. It is diagnosed based on clinical, radiological, and serological criteria, and treated with immunosuppressants in the acute phase. Long‐term immunosuppression is essential to prevent potential relapses. In this case report, we present the case of a 19‐year‐old female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), who presented with blurriness and loss of vision in her left eye. Optical coherence tomography was normal, but a gadolinium‐enhanced cervico‐dorsal MRI showed multiple lesions extending from the brainstem to the C7‐T1 junction suggestive of longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM), the largest of which was a cystic lesion at the cervico‐spinal junction. A contrast injection also revealed left optic neuritis. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed elevated IgG and red blood cell count, but no oligoclonal bands. The patient tested positive for AQP‐4 autoantibodies, confirming the diagnosis of NMOSD. Treatment with intravenous methylprednisolone led to partial improvement, but the patient experienced a relapse with severe neurological symptoms, including tetraplegia and bladder and bowel dysfunction. This case illustrates the importance of considering NMOSD in the differential diagnosis of patients with SLE who present with optic neuritis and/or myelitis, especially when MRI findings are suggestive of LETM. Early diagnosis and adherence to treatment are crucial to prevent further relapses and deleterious sequelae.

48. Physical Activation Functions (PAFs): An Approach for More Efficient Induction of Physics into Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs)

Abstract

In recent years, the gap between Deep Learning (DL) methods and analytical or numerical approaches in scientific computing is tried to be filled by the evolution of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs). However, still, there are many complications in the training of PINNs and optimal interleaving of physical models. Here, we introduced the concept of Physical Activation Functions (PAFs). This concept offers that instead of using general activation functions (AFs) such as ReLU, tanh, and sigmoid for all the neurons, one can use generic AFs that their mathematical expression is inherited from the physical laws of the investigating phenomena. The formula of PAFs may be inspired by the terms in the analytical solution of the problem. We showed that the PAFs can be inspired by any mathematical formula related to the investigating phenomena such as the initial or boundary conditions of the PDE system. We validated the advantages of PAFs for several PDEs including the harmonic oscillations, Burgers, Advection-Convection equation, and the heterogeneous diffusion equations. The main advantage of PAFs was in the more efficient constraining and interleaving of PINNs with the investigating physical phenomena and their underlying mathematical models. This added constraint significantly improved the predictions of PINNs for the testing data that was out-of-training distribution. Furthermore, the application of PAFs reduced the size of the PINNs up to 75% in different cases. Also, the value of loss terms was reduced by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude in some cases which is noteworthy for upgrading the training of the PINNs. The iterations required for finding the optimum values were also significantly reduced. It is concluded that using the PAFs helps in generating PINNs with less complexity and much more validity for longer ranges of prediction., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures
