Its impact on polychromatic image quality, however, has been shown experimentally and by computer modeling to be small or absent. We hypothesized that modest changes in pseudophakic LCA created by higher and lower Abbe number materials will have little or no impact on polychromatic image quality in pseudophakic eyes.Materials and Methods: Using published chromatic and monochromatic aberration data from pseudophakic eyes and higher and lower Abbe number materials (37 and 55), we computed monochromatic point spread functions for 21 wavelengths across the visible spectrum. After weighting by either the RGB spectra of a liquid crystal display or by a flat white spectrum, they were weighted by the human spectral sensitivity function (Vλ) before being added to generate polychromatic PSFs.Results: In the absence of monochromatic aberrations, the reduced LCA due to higher Abbe number intraocular lens (IOL) materials resulted in a reduction of 0.08 diopters in the mean defocus generated by LCA. At the retinal plane, the higher Abbe number pseudophakic model produced improvements in polychromatic modulation transfer functions (MTFs) similar to those generated by a 0.05 diopter reduction in spherical defocus. When monochromatic aberrations were added to make the model more representative of actual pseudophakic eyes, the differences in image quality became sub-threshold for human vision or disappeared completely.Conclusion: The anticipated gains in polychromatic image quality from employing higher Abbe number IOL materials with reduced LCA do not materialize in plausible aberrated models of pseudophakic eyes.Keywords: Abbe number, chromatic aberrations, IOL, image quality

Single-droplet drying experiments were conducted with solutions of dairy materials in water (skim milk and its constituents, namely lactose, whey protein, and a lactose–whey mixture) at both moderate and elevated temperatures, at which inflation/deflation phenomena are observed. The experimental data were used to obtain parameters of a spatially resolving single-droplet drying model, which was extended to empirically account for inflation/deflation. Inflation/deflation parameters and conditions for crust formation at the transition from the first to the second drying stage were clearly solute dependent, and respective correlations with drying conditions were developed for the investigated dairy materials. The parametrized model was shown to satisfactorily describe measured data in respect to drying curve, drying time, and the diameter of product particles. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Purpose: Part 1 of the study investigated image quality associated with oblique incidence of light on a multisegment lens (Hoya MiyoSmart) intended to treat myopia development. Part 2 investigates power corrections associated with oblique incidence., Methods: Modelling and ray tracing were carried out with lenses of -4 D distance power and, to a lesser extent, +0.25 D. Ray tracing simulations were done for the lens by itself, an eye model by itself and the combination. These simulations were for the static situation of peripheral vision when the eye looks through the lens centre and for central (foveal) vision when the eye rotates to look at objects away from the lens optical axis. The outcome was power correction of the optics, that is, the difference between the nominal power of the distance correction provided by the carrier lens under specific conditions and the actual power. This was determined across the field to about 45° and across the pupil for certain field angles. Most investigations were performed for distance vision, but some were for near objects with an accommodating version of the model eye., Results: Ignoring intended multisegment effects, the quality of optics associated with peripheral vision was poor. There was considerable astigmatism (cylinder) across the field and high variation in astigmatism across the pupil. The added effects of the lens and eye were similar to those of their combination. For the accommodated eye model with an object at 250 mm, results were similar to those obtained with the unaccommodated model viewing a distant object. For foveal vision with the rotating eye, optics were relatively good with lower levels of astigmatism than for peripheral vision., Conclusion: The results of Part 1, finding considerable effects of the obliquity of incidence associated with peripheral vision and with foveal vision for the rotating eye, were supported by the power corrections., (© 2025 The Author(s). Introduction: Multisegment (MS) spectacles are intended to slow myopia progression by modifying images falling on the peripheral retina. Some published optical treatments of these lenses assume normal incidence of light at the surfaces, but images falling on the peripheral retina are usually associated with oblique ray pencils. Here, we model representative images of point objects produced by the Hoya MiyoSmart MS spectacle lens when oblique ray pencils are used., Methods: Various imaging aspects of the MS lens alone and in combination with a suitable accommodating eye model for a 4D myope were evaluated using the Optical Design program Ansys Zemax OpticStudio. Configurations studied included object points at vergences of zero and -4 D, with the objects being either on the lens axis or at a field angle of about 30°. The effect on foveal vision of rotating the axis of the eye with respect to that of the lens was also considered. Images of point objects were described in terms of spot diagrams and fast Fourier transform point-spread functions., Results: Symmetry and overall optical quality of images decreased with the obliquity of the ray pencils, due to the increased off-axis aberrations of the lens and the eye. Images of near object points were strongly affected by the level of accommodation: optimal retinal image quality occurred when accommodation brought the carrier lens focus close to the retina, rather than that of the lenslets., Conclusions: Attempts to understand why MS lenses slow myopia progression need to consider the way in which through-focus retinal image quality changes with obliquity of the ray pencils across the visual field and the possible effects of ocular accommodation., (© 2025 The Author(s). Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between myopia and potential "myopiagenic" digital habits (excessive screen time, near face-device distance or low ambient light level)., Methods: 82 university students (21 ± 3 years) underwent a comprehensive optometric examination, including subjective refraction and axial length (AL) measurements. Digital habits were objectively measured using a mobile application (app) capturing screen time, face-device distance, ambient light level and number of interruptions larger than 20″ per day (called "events")., Results: The collection of 40 M data points showed mean values: 57 ± 40 min of daily screen time, 355 ± 67 mm of face-device distance, 305 ± 215 lux of ambient light level and 52 ± 32 events. No correlation was found between spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and digital habits. Particularly, SER was more negative for greater screen times, nearer face-device distances, lower light levels or more events. AL was inversely correlated with SER decrease. Correlation coefficients were very weak (R < 0.14) in all cases., Conclusions: The app quantified smartphone-based digital habits in a university population. Introduction: Habitual viewing behaviour is widely believed to be an important contributing factor to the onset and progression of myopia and may be task dependent. The purpose of this study was to quantify the habitual viewing distance of children performing five different tasks on a smartphone digital device., Methods: The real-time viewing distance in 38 children with their habitual correction was measured using software (MyopiaApp) on a handheld (Google Pixel 3) device. Five tasks were performed in a randomised sequence: playing a game, watching video in a light (680 lux) and dark (5.5 lux) environment and reading small (8 pt) and large (16 pt) text. ANCOVA statistical analysis was used to evaluate the effect of task, group (myope vs. non-myope) and arm length on the median relative viewing distance., Results: Arm length was not correlated with viewing distance in any of the tasks, and there was no significant difference in viewing distance between any of the tasks. Specifically, a two-way mixed ANCOVA indicated that task, refractive group (myopic vs. non-myopic), age and arm length, as well as all two-way interactions were not significantly associated with viewing distance. Overall, 60% of the total variance in viewing distance was accounted for by individual differences., Conclusions: The average handheld viewing distance was similar across a variety of everyday tasks in a representative sample of myopic and emmetropic children. Neither arm length, age nor refractive group were associated with viewing distance in any of the tasks. Importantly, myopic children of a given size did not hold the smartphone digital device at a different distance for any task than their equally sized non-myopic peers. However, both groups exhibited high inter-individual variability in mean viewing distance, indicating some subjects performed all tasks at further distances while other subjects used at nearer distances., (© 2024 The Authors. Plant-based beverages (PBs) are currently gaining interest among consumers who are seeking alternative sustainable options to traditional dairy drinks. The study aimed to obtain powdered plant beverages without the addition of carriers by spray drying method to implement them in the future as an alternative to the liquid form of dairy drinks. Some of the most well-known commercial beverages sources like soy, almond, rice and oat were analyzed in this work. The effect of different treatments (concentration, addition of oat fiber) and two approaches od spray drying (conventional high temperature spray drying-SD, and dehumidified air spray drying at low temperature-DASD) were presented. Moreover, moisture content, water activity, particle morphology and size of obtained powders were analyzed. It was possible to obtain PBs without the addition of carriers, although the drying yield of four basic beverages was low (16.1-37.4%). The treatments and change in spray drying approach enhanced the drying yield, especially for the concentrated beverage dried using DASD (59.2%). Additionally, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was applied to evaluate the differences in chemical composition of powdered PBs. FTIR analysis revealed differences in the range of the absorption frequency of amide I, amide II (1700-1500 cm -1 ) and carbohydrate region (1200-900 cm -1 ). Principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out to study the relationship between spray dried plant beverages samples based on the fingerprint region of FTIR spectra, as well as the physical characteristics. Introduction: A periodical self-monitoring of spherical refraction using smartphones may potentially allow a quicker intervention by eye care professionals to reduce myopia progression. Unfortunately, at low levels of myopia, the far point (FP) can be located far away from the eye which can make interactions with the device difficult. To partially remedy this issue, a novel method is proposed and tested wherein the longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) of blue light is leveraged to optically bring the FP closer to the eye., Methods: Firstly, LCA was obtained by measuring spherical refraction subjectively using blue pixels in stimuli shown on organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens and also grey stimuli with matching luminance. Secondly, the visual acuity (VA) measured with a smartphone located at 1.0 m and 1.5 m and displaying blue optotypes was compared with that obtained clinically standard measurements. Finally, the spherical over refraction obtained in blue light with a smartphone was compared with clinical over-refraction with black and white (B&W) optotypes placed at 6 m., Results: Mean LCA of blue OLED smartphone screens was -0.67 ± 0.11 D. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between the VA measured with blue optotypes on a smartphone screen and an eye chart. Purpose: Multizone contact lenses control myopia progression by proposed introduction of myopic defocus. This project investigated how much of the pupil area and how many dioptres of myopic defocus are introduced by different lens zone geometries with near- and off-axis viewing., Methods: Ten young myopic adults (18-25 years) binocularly wore four soft contact lenses including a single vision (SV), concentric-ring dual-focus (DF), centre-distance multifocal (MF) and a RingBoost™ (RB) multi-zone design containing a combination of coaxial and non-coaxial zones. A modified aberrometer captured aberrations and pupil sizes at four target vergences between -0.25 and -4.00 D (on-axis) and across the central ±30° of the horizontal retina (off-axis). Defocus was quantified as the difference between the measured refractive state and the target vergence within each zone of a multi-zone design within the pupil and compared with that of equivalent zone areas of the SV lens. The percentage of the pupil containing myopic defocused light for each lens was calculated., Results: Defocus within the distance correction zones of multi-zone lenses was similar to that of the SV lens. When viewing on-axis at -0.25 D target vergence, on average 11% of the pupil was myopic with SV, whereas 62%, 84% and 50% of the pupil was myopic for the DF, MF and RB designs, respectively. At -4.00 D target vergence, all lenses exhibited a systematic decrease in the percentage of pupil area having myopic defocus (SV: 3%; DF: 18%; MF: 5% and RB: 26%). The off-axis proportions were similar across multi-zone lenses; however, multi-zone lenses retained approximately 1.25-3.0× more myopic defocus than the SV lens., Conclusions: Subjects accommodated using the distance-correction zones of multi-zone lenses. Multi-zone contact lenses introduced significant myopic defocus on-axis and across the central ±30° retina. Purpose: Personal mobile devices such as smartphones are proving their usefulness in ever more applications in tele-eyecare. An inconvenience and potential source of error in these past approaches stemmed from the requirement for the subjects to situate their devices at a distance. The present study aims to clinically validate best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measures carried out by a novel smartphone application "vision.app" (VisionApp Solutions S.L.) using comparative statistics against clinical measurements., Materials and Methods: BCVA was measured in both eyes of 40 subjects using vision.app which displayed a black Landolt-C optotype with crowding on a white background, and utilized a 4 forced-choice procedure for the subjects to find (by means of swiping in either of four directions) the smallest optotype size they could resolve. Results were compared to BCVA measurements taken using a standard Snellen chart placed at 20 feet (6 m)., Results: The t-test revealed no significant differences between the app- and clinically-measured VA (p = 0.478 (OD) and 0.608 (OS)), with a mean difference between clinical and app measurements of less than one line of the eye chart (-0.009 logMAR (OD) and -0.005 logMAR (OS)). A limit of agreement for a 95% confidence interval of ± 0.08 logMAR for OD and OS was found., Conclusions: The results show the potential use of a smartphone to measure BCVA at a handheld distance. Purpose: This study examined the optical impact of a DF contact lens during near viewing in a sample of habitual DF lens wearing children., Methods: Seventeen myopic children aged 14 to 18 years who had completed 3 or 6 years of treatment with a DF contact lens (MiSight 1 Day; CooperVision, Inc., San Ramon, CA) were recruited and fit bilaterally with the DF and a single-vision (Proclear 1 Day; CooperVision, Inc.) contact lens. Right eye wavefronts were measured using a pyramidal aberrometer (Osiris; CSO, Florence, Italy) while children accommodated binocularly to high-contrast letter stimuli at five target vergences. Wavefront error data were used to compute pupil maps of refractive state., Results: During near viewing, children wearing single-vision lenses accommodated on average to achieve approximate focus in the pupil center but, because of combined accommodative lag and negative spherical aberration, experienced up to 2.00 D of hyperopic defocus in the pupil margins. With DF lenses, children accommodated similarly achieving approximate focus in the pupil center. When viewing three near distances (0.48, 0.31, and 0.23 m), the added +2.00 D within the DF lens treatment optics shifted the mean defocus from +0.75 to -1.00 D. The DF lens reduced the percentage of hyperopic defocus (≥+0.75 D) in the retinal image from 52 to 25% over these target distances, leading to an increase in myopic defocus (≤-0.50 D) from 17 to 42%., Conclusions: The DF contact lens did not alter the accommodative behavior of children. Purpose: To quantify the amount of myopic defocus, contrast modulation and other optical characteristics of two novel spectacle lenses (MiYOSMART by Hoya and Stellest by Essilor) with the inclusion of lenslets in their designs were investigated computationally and experimentally. This paper examined the hypothesis that despite the non-coaxial nature of the optics, image degradation will exist due to the fragmented nature of the base optic when imaging through the lens regions populated by lenslets., Methods: Optical power was evaluated by computing wavefront vergence and curvature from wavefront slope measured with the Optocraft aberrometer within 1.0 and 6.0 mm apertures across MiYOSMART hexagons and Stellest rings. Point-spread functions (PSFs) were computed using physical (wave) optics and geometrical ray optics principles, and compared with experimental measurements using a 4f optical system. Simulated retinal images and modulation transfer functions (MTFs) were computed from PSF-derived optical transfer functions (OTFs)., Results: Mean lenslet power in MiYOSMART was +3.95 ± 0.10 D through the hexagons and +6.00 ± 0.15 D in Stellest in rings 1-5 and decreased by 0.42 D/ring reaching 3.50 D in the final one. Stellest lenslets included up to -0.015 microns of primary spherical aberration. PSFs and retinal images revealed simultaneous contributions of the base optic and lenslets. MTFs showed a decrease in contrast at low (1-10 c/deg) spatial frequencies (SFs) comparable to 0.25 D of defocus, and retention of diminished levels of contrast at higher SFs., Conclusions: Varying sagittal power and consistent curvature power across the lenslets is an identifying signature of the novel non-coaxial lens design included in both spectacle lenses. Lenslet array structure itself plays a significant role in determining image characteristics. For both lenses, the blur created by the fragmented base optic contributes to the image quality. Rotating packed bed (RPB) is a promising technology which can be used to intensify mass transfer in absorption processes. A better understanding of fluid dynamics is crucial to fill the gap in fundamental knowledge. Raising awareness on new technology and creating rules for process design and control are also very important. The experimental investigation of fluid in rotating beds is a very complex and difficult issue. What is more, the knowledge of the phase behavior in an RPB device is still insufficient. Therefore, an CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation is proposed as a tool for the study of gas phase flow inside porous packing. This study presents a three-dimensional numerical model for two fluid models: k-ε and RNG k-ε, for predicting dry pressure drop. The obtained simulation outcome was compared with the experimental results. The experimental dry pressure drop for porous packing was investigated for rotational speed in the range from 150 rpm to 1500 rpm and compared to the results from the CFD model. The comparison between the experimental and simulation results indicates very good consistency for the entire range of the rotational speed of interest. CFD modelling is recognised as an adequate tool leading to the better understanding of gas phase behaviour inside an RPB, filling an essential gap in our knowledge of the hydrodynamics of rotating packing, which allows to improve the design and performance of the process in RPB in terms of minimizing energy and material consumption., (© 2022. Purpose: To develop an optical model of a child's eye to reveal the impact of target distance and accommodative behaviour on retinal image quality when fitted with multi-zone lenses., Methods: Pupil size, aberration levels and accommodative lag were adjusted for models viewing stimuli at 400, 100, 33 and 20 cm. Distributions of defocus across the pupil and simulated retinal images were obtained. An equivalent 16-point letter was imaged at near viewing distances, while a 0.00 logMAR (6/6) letter was imaged at 400 cm. Multi-zone lenses included those clinically utilised for myopia control (e.g., dual-focus, multi-segmented and aspherical optics)., Results: Viewing distance adjustments to model spherical aberration (SA) and pupil radius resulted in a model eye with wider defocus distributions at closer viewing distances, especially at 20 cm. The increasing negative SA at near reduced the effective add power of dual-focus lenses, reducing the amount of myopic defocus introduced by the centre-distance, 2-zone design. The negative SA at near largely compensated for the high positive SA introduced by the aspheric lens, removing most myopic defocus when viewing at near. A 0.50 D accommodative lag had little impact on the legibility of typical text (16-point) at the closer viewing distances., Conclusions: All four multi-zone lenses successfully generated myopic defocus at greater viewing distances, but two failed to introduce significant amounts of myopic defocus at the nearest viewing distance due to the combined effects of pupil miosis and negative SA. Purpose: To evaluate the refractive impact of dual-focus (DF) myopia control contact lenses (CLs) on accommodating young myopic adults., Methods: Phase 1: accommodative accuracy was assessed in 40 myopic participants. Phase 2: a subset of four subjects who demonstrated accurate accommodation and six who chronically underaccommodated were fitted with single vision (SV, Proclear 1 day) and centre-distance DF myopia control CLs (MiSight 1 day) with approximately +2.00 D of additional power in two surrounding annular zones. While binocularly viewing high contrast characters at 4.00, 1.00, 0.50, 0.33, 0.25 and 0.20 m, aberrometry data were captured across the central ±30° of the horizontal retina. Local refractive errors were pooled for each area of the pupil covered by the central distance or first annular defocus zone of the DF CLs., Results: In the "good" accommodator group fitted with SV CLs, accommodative lags were generally absent except at the closest viewing distance (mean errors: -0.09 ± 0.22 D, -0.12 ± 0.26 D, -0.05 ± 0.37 D and +0.38 ± 0.54 D for -2.00, -3.00, -4.00 and -5.00 D target vergences, respectively) but significantly larger in the "poor" accommodating participants (+0.81 ± 0.21 D, +0.97 ± 0.27 D, +1.18 ± 0.39 D, +1.47 ± 0.55 D). For most viewing distances, hyperopic defocus observed in the region of the pupil covered by the first annular zone was replaced with myopic defocus when fitted with the DF CLs. Myopic defocus created by the first annular region was present across the central 30° of the retina., Conclusions: Some young adult myopes chronically experience high levels of hyperopic defocus when viewing near targets, which was replaced by myopic defocus in the annular part of the pupil covered by the treatment zones when fitted with a centre-distance myopia control DF CL., (© 2021 The Authors. A combination of human subject data and optical modelling was used to investigate unexpected nasal-temporal asymmetry in peripheral refraction with an aspheric myopia control lens. Peripheral refraction was measured with an auto-refractor and an aberrometer. Peripheral refraction with the lens was highly dependent upon instrument and method (e.g. pupil size and the number of aberration orders). A model that did not account for on-eye conformation did not mirror the clinical results, but a model assuming complete lens conformation to the anterior corneal topography accounted for the positive shift in clinically measured refraction at larger nasal field angles. Purpose: High sampling density optical metrology combined with pupil- and image-plane numerical analyses were applied to evaluate a novel spectacle lens containing multiple small zones designed to slow myopia progression., Methods: High-resolution aberrometry (ClearWave, www.lumetrics.com) was used to sample wavefront slopes of a novel spectacle lens, Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) (www.hoya.com), incorporating many small, positive-powered lenslets in its periphery. Using wavefront slope and error maps, custom MATLAB software ('Indiana Wavefront Analyzer') was used to compute image-plane point-spread functions (PSF), modulation transfer functions (MTF), simulated images and power distributions created by the dual-focus optic for different pupil sizes and target vergences., Results: Outside of a central 10 mm zone containing single distance optical power, a hexagonal array of small 1 mm lenslets with nearest-neighbour separations of 0.5 mm were distributed over the lens periphery. Sagittal and curvature-based measures of optical power imperfectly captured the consistent +3.50 D add produced by the lenslets. Image plane simulations revealed multiple PSFs and poor image quality at the lenslet focal plane. Blur at the distance optic focal plane was consistent with a combination of diffraction blur from the distance optic and the approximately +3.50 D of defocus from the 1 mm diameter near optic zones., Conclusion: Converging the defocused beams generated by the multiple small (1 mm diameter) lenslets to a blurred image at the distance focal plane produced a blur magnitude determined by the small lenslet diameter and not the overall pupil diameter. The distance optic located in between the near-add lenslets determines the limits of the optical quality achievable by the lens. The aim of the presented research was to examine the concentration of biogenic compounds and heavy metals in the bottom sediments of the Sulejów Reservoir (Central Poland) from October 2018. Based on the obtained research results, maps of the spatial distribution were prepared. The following parameters were analyzed: total phosphorus (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total organic carbon (TOC), ratio of total organic carbon to nitrogen (C:N), organic matter content as well as Cd, Cr and Pb concentrations. The sediments were collected at 28 sampling sites, covering the whole area of the reservoir. The differences in the content of individual biogenic compounds result from the composition of the debris applied by the supplying rivers, as well as the content of this elements in the water, long retention time (40 days) and depth from which the tested sediments were taken. The distribution of examined compounds was largely influenced by the agricultural activity in the studied area, as well as the presence of ports and recreational points. Based on the measurements, the highest amounts of biogenic components deposit in sediments of deep parts in slow-flowing waters, in stagnation zones, areas adjacent to arable land, and the sites where fine-size fractions prevail in the deposited material. Biogenic compounds in sediments of the Sulejów Reservoir showed a pattern of gradual increase along the reservoir from lower values in the back-water part. A similar relationship is visible for heavy metals. Referring to the ecotoxicological criteria, it can be stated that bottom sediments from the Sulejów Reservoir collected in 2018 are not toxicologically contaminated in terms of cadmium, lead and chromium content.

Significance: Measurement of ocular aberrations is a critical component of many optical corrections., Purpose: This study examines the accuracy and repeatability of a newly available high-resolution pyramidal wavefront sensor-based aberrometer (Osiris by Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici, Firenze, Italy)., Methods: An engineered model eye and a dilated presbyopic eye were used to assess accuracy and repeatability of aberration measurements after systematic introduction of lower- and higher-order aberrations with calibrated trial lenses (sphere +10.00 to -10.00 D, and astigmatic -4.00 and -2.00 D with axis 180, 90, and 45°) and phase plates (-0.57 to 0.60 μm of Seidel spherical aberration defined over a 6-mm pupil diameter). Osiris aberration measurements were compared with those acquired on a previously calibrated COAS-HD aberrometer for foveal and peripheral optics both with and without multizone dual-focus contact lenses. The impact of simulated axial and lateral misalignment was evaluated., Results: Root-mean-square errors for paraxial sphere (corneal plane), cylinder, and axis were, respectively, 0.07, 0.11 D, and 1.8° for the engineered model and 0.15, 0.26 D, and 2.7° for the presbyopic eye. Repeatability estimates (i.e., standard deviation of 10 repeat measures) for the model and presbyopic eyes were 0.026 and 0.039 D for spherical error. Root-mean-square errors of 0.01 and 0.02 μm, respectively, were observed for primary spherical aberration and horizontal coma (model eye). Foveal and peripheral measures of higher- and lower-order aberrations measured with the Osiris closely matched parallel data collected with the COAS-HD aberrometer both with and without dual-focus zonal bifocal contact lenses. Operator errors of focus and alignment introduced changes of 0.018 and 0.02 D/mm in sphere estimates., Conclusions: The newly available clinical pyramidal aberrometer provided accurate and repeatable measures of lower- and higher-order aberrations, even in the challenging but clinically important cases of peripheral retina and multifocal optics.

Specially developed software (app) was written for handheld electronic devices that uses the device camera and light detector for real-time monitoring of near-work distance and environmental lighting. A pilot study of this novel app employed children using tablet computers in a classroom. Measurements of face-device distance and face illuminance were obtained from two schools where tablets were used regularly. Children were divided randomly into a control group (CG) and intervention group (IG). The app was calibrated in a lab and configured to store average values every 20 seconds in a remote database. In both groups, the app recorded data only when a child's face was present in the camera image. The app darkened the screen for the IG when the face-device distance was shorter than 40 cm. The total mean face-device distance was 36.8 ± 5.7 cm in CG and 47.2 ± 6.5 cm in IG. Children in IG had to accommodate approximately 0.6 D less when using their devices. The mean classroom face illuminance was 980 ± 350 lux in School #1 and 750 ± 400 lux in School #2. The novel method of remotely monitoring and controlling the face-device distance and illuminance can potentially open new paths for myopia prevention and myopia control.

Purpose: To compare the visually weighted image quality and depth of focus achieved with small-pupil and multifocal strategies for expanding depth of focus of presbyopic or pseudophakic eyes., Setting: School of Optometry, Indiana University, Bloomington, USA., Design: Computational modeling., Methods: The visual Strehl ratio was computed from monochromatic optical transfer functions over a wide range of primary spherical aberration and defocus levels for pupil diameters ranging from 1.0 mm to 7.0 mm under high photopic light levels (retinal illuminance >900 trolands) and mesopic light levels (2 candelas/m 2 )., Results: Pupil miosis and added spherical aberration were effective at reducing the impact of spherical defocus. With high light levels at which Weber's law makes neural contrast sensitivity independent of retinal illuminance, small pupils (eg, 1.0 to 3.0 mm) generated higher peak image quality and more effective expansion of depth of focus than the small-pupil multifocal model. However, under low light levels at which the reduced retinal illuminance associated with pupil miosis lowered neural contrast sensitivity, the peak image quality was lower with small pupils (1.0 to 1.5 mm) at all aberration levels. Large pupils and high levels of spherical aberration were most effective at expanding the depth of focus under mesopic light levels., Conclusions: When reductions in retinal illuminance created by pupil miosis have no effect on neural contrast sensitivity, small pupils produced higher image quality and larger depth of focus than multifocal optics and large pupils. The paper presents results of water quality monitoring conducted within the frame of the MONSUL project. The main goal was to analyse and assess the impact of factors determining the ecological status of a dam reservoir on the basis of the Sulejow Reservoir located in Central Poland. The project implementation plan based on comprehensive research-based monitoring covered the following parameters characterising the ecological potential of the reservoir: water temperature, pH, oxygen concentration, chlorophyll “a” and blue-green algae, concentration of ammonium ion, nitrate nitrogen phosphates as well as total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand and biochemical oxygen demand. The parameters were measured with a mobile and stationary monitoring system and supplemented by an off-line analysis of water samples in the laboratory. The study was carried out during two seasons: May–October 2015 and April–November 2016; the results were analysed also with regard to the weather conditions. Despite the similar temperatures of water and air in the analysed seasons, significant differences were observed for atmospheric precipitation; 2015 was a dry year, and the climatic water balance for the analysed area was negative, which caused limited surface runoff and decreased the concentrations of nutrient in the reservoir waters. Data from continuous monitoring, supplemented with the results of laboratory measurements, indicated that the values of TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) parameters were within the purity class I; exceedances refer to the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) value, which confirmed the presence of biodegradable organic compounds in the reservoir waters. The values of chlorophyll “a” and the presence of algae during the vegetation season testify to eutrophication of the Sulejow Reservoir., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. Crack is a central nervous system stimulant extracted from the Erythroxylum coca plant. It is considered the most potent and addictive form of cocaine, and its euphoric effects are attained within a few seconds after consumption. Alteration of biological markers of oxidative stress and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) could be related to the severity of crack withdrawal symptoms in patients undergoing rehabilitation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate if the crack consumption and the drug detoxification process during 14 days in hospitalization regime was able to modify the oxidative status and BDNF levels, in male crack-abstinent patients. The crack detoxification process increased the glutathione (GSH), total thiol content (GST), nitric oxide (NO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, and reduced the mean BDNF levels. Moreover, a positive correlation was found between the number of hospital admission days and SOD values and between the GST levels and crack-use time after 14 days of detoxification. Furthermore, a negative correlation between the frequency of crack use and NO levels on the first day of hospitalization was also found. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that crack consumption causes increased oxidative stress in drug users and that the detoxification process during 14 days was sufficient to improve oxidative parameters and antioxidant defenses of the patients, which could positively contribute to rehabilitation process. In addition, we also observed a great variability in the BDNF levels of the patients during the detoxification process, resulting in a reduction in the mean values of this neurotrophin., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Introduction: The risk of professional burnout is constituted by job-related as well as individual factors. The latter involve affective temperament, which influences the perception of job-related stress. The aim of the present study was to assess the affective temperament, the level of job stress and professional burnout, as well as the relationships between these variables, in public servants and nurses., Material and Methods: 100 civil servants and 100 nurses were enrolled in the study. Affective temperament and burnout were assessed by means of TEMPS-A and MBI questionnaires, respectively. To measure the level of job-related stress, we have designed a 6-item self-reported questionnaire, which considered stressors common for both professions., Results: Compared to the civil servants, nurses showed higher rate of anxious temperament and experienced greater intensity of job-related stress. The groups did not differ in the intensity of burnout symptoms. The rates of cyclothymic and anxious temperaments correlated with the intensity of stress, and burnout symptoms in the group of nurses. Within the civil servants group, the level of stress correlated with intensity of burnout, however no correlations with affective temperament were observed. The regression analysis performed in both groups revealed the significant effect of stress and cyclothymic temperament on burnout, while the effect of anxious temperament was not significant., Conclusions: Cyclothymic and anxious temperaments are related to the level of experienced job stress and the risk of burnout. In professions like nursing, where employees show elevated rates of these temperaments, burnout prevention and stress management education is of particular importance.

Background and Aims: Cardiovascular diseases of thrombotic origin are related to high mortality and standard therapeutic agent used in this case is acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), but serious adverse events may occur. However, recent data has suggested the plant Campomanesia xanthocarpa has antiplatelet activity and could be a viable alternative. In this study we investigated the effects of the encapsulated powder of this plant in human platelet aggregation., Methods: 23 healthy subjects were randomly divided into three groups: (1) ASA (100mg), (2) C. xanthocarpa (1000mg) or (3) synergism (500mg of C. xanthocarpa plush 50mg of ASA); daily for five days. Antiplatelet activity was determined by turbidimetric method using ADP or arachidonic acid (AA) agonists before, 5 and 8days after treatments., Results: Treatment with C. xanthocarpa and synergism caused a reduction of 8±13.5% and 12.5±5% in platelet aggregation induced by ADP after 5days of treatment, respectively, returning to basal levels after 8days. For AA agonist, 5days of treatment with C. xanthocarpa, ASA or synergism caused a reduction of 46±15%, 36±12% and 69.3±6% in platelet aggregation, respectively, and first two groups returned to baseline values 8days after treatment ended. Synergism group prolonged antiplatelet effect maintaining aggregation reduction after 8days the end of treatment., Conclusion: C. xanthocarpa showed antiplatelet action when stimulated by agonist AA, and contributed to the antiplatelet effect when associated with ASA for both agonists, allowing dose reduction to 50mg., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To develop an objective refraction formula based on the ocular wavefront error (WFE) expressed in terms of Zernike coefficients and pupil radius, which would be an accurate predictor of subjective spherical equivalent (SE) for different pupil sizes., Methods: A sphere is fitted to the ocular wavefront at the center and at a variable distance, t . The optimal fitting distance, t opt , is obtained empirically from a dataset of 308 eyes as a function of objective refraction pupil radius, r 0 , and used to define the formula of a new wavefront refraction metric (MTR). The metric is tested in another, independent dataset of 200 eyes., Results: For pupil radii r 0 ≤ 2 mm, the new metric predicts the equivalent sphere with similar accuracy (<0.1D), however, for r 0 > 2 mm, the mean error of traditional metrics can increase beyond 0.25D, and the MTR remains accurate. The proposed metric allows clinicians to obtain an accurate clinical spherical equivalent value without rescaling/refitting of the wavefront coefficients. It has the potential to be developed into a metric which will be able to predict full spherocylindrical refraction for the desired illumination conditions and corresponding pupil size.

Purpose: Longitudinal chromatic aberration is present in all states of accommodation and may play a role in the accommodation response and the emmetropisation process. We study the change of the depth of field (DOFi) with the state of accommodation, taking into account the longitudinal chromatic aberration., Methods: Subjective DOFi was defined as the range of defocus beyond which the blur of the target (one line of optotypes of 0.1 logMAR shown on a black-and-white microdisplay, seen through different colour filters) was perceived as objectionable. The subject's eye was paralysed and different, previously-measured accommodative states (corresponding to the accommodative demands of 0D, 2D and 4D) were simulated with a deformable mirror. Different colour conditions (monochromatic red, green and blue and polychromatic (white) were tested. The DOFi was measured subjectively, using a motorised Badal system., Results: Taking as reference the average accommodative response for the white stimulus, the blue response exhibits on average a lead of 0.45 ± 0.09D, the green a negligible lead of 0.07 ± 0.02D and red a lag of 0.49 ± 0.10D. The monochromatic DOFi, calculated by averaging DOFi over the red, green and blue colour conditions for each accommodative demand was 1.10 ± 0.10D for 0D, 1.20 ± 0.08D for 2D, and 1.26 ± 0.40D for 4D. The polychromatic white DOFi were greater than the average monochromatic DOFi by 19%, 9% and 14% for 0D, 2D, and 4D of accommodative demand, respectively., Conclusion: The longitudinal chromatic aberration causes a dioptric shift of the monochromatic accommodation response. Background: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) was shown to improve the immune function and survival in experimental sepsis. This study examined the effect of DHEA on intestinal leukocyte recruitment during experimental sepsis, considering factors of gender (male, female and ovariectomized female animals) and combined treatment using orthovanadate (OV) in two models of sepsis., Methodology/findings: Male rats underwent colon ascendens stent peritonitis (CASP) or endotoxemia. DHEA was administered after induction of experimental sepsis. Changes in leukocyte adherence and capillary perfusion (measured as intestinal functional capillary density - FCD) were assessed using intravital microscopy. While DHEA increased baseline leukocyte adherence in control animals, DHEA reduced leukocyte adherence and increased FCD in male animals with CASP. These effects were also observed in DHEA-treated ovariectomized female rats with CASP. Similarly, the administration of DHEA reduced the number of adherent leukocytes to intestinal venules by 30% in the endotoxemia model. The combined treatment of DHEA and OV significantly reduced adherence of leukocytes to intestinal venules and improved FCD., Conclusions: Our results indicate that DHEA is able to reduce intestinal leukocyte recruitment induced by experimental sepsis. Combination of DHEA with OV inhibits leukocyte adherence to intestinal endothelium, similar to what is achieved by the single administration of DHEA but with significantly improved FCD. The emergence and spread of resistance mechanisms in Gram-negative bacilli has complicated the treatment of serious nosocomial infections. Current automated systems for detection of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing isolates are unreliable. One possible straightforward alternative method is evaluation of ertapenem resistance. However, the accuracy of this method is affected by other resistance mechanisms such as AmpC gene expression or extended-spectrum β-lactamase production associated with porin loss. This study included 128 samples of K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter spp. that were non-susceptible to ertapenem. The disk diffusion and Etest method were applied to determine susceptibility to imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem. Isolates exhibiting intermediate or complete resistance to ertapenem were evaluated for resistance mechanisms. bla(TEM), bla(SHV), bla(CTX-M), bla(CTX-M-2) and bla(KPC) genes were tested for by PCR, and the presence of outer membrane protein was investigated by dot-blot assay. bla(TEM) was detected in 52.9% and 10.3%, bla(SHV) in 29.4% and 0.94%, bla(CTX-M) in 41.4% and 1.9% and bla(CTX-M-2) in 23.5% and 1.9% of K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae isolates, respectively. The bla(KPC) gene was present in 12.6% of Enterobacter spp. isolates. OmpC and OmpF were present in 6.6% of E. cloacae isolates. These results indicate that several resistance mechanisms contribute to potential therapeutic failure of carbapenem therapy and point to the need for better detection methods and surveillance strategies., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. and the International Society of Chemotherapy. Our previous study indicated that unilateral lesion of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) facilitates contralateral VTA stimulation-induced feeding or exploration. The present study was aimed to determine the possible role of the central cholinergic systems in this effect. Immunohistochemistry for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was used to measure the number of active cholinergic neurons in their major groups (Ch1-Ch6) and in striatal regions in rats subjected to unilateral electrocoagulation and contralateral VTA electrical stimulation (L/S group) in comparison to the unilaterally stimulated (S), unilaterally lesioned (L) and sham (Sh) groups. The study showed that unilateral VTA lesion increased (as compared to Sh group) the number of ChAT+ neurons in the Ch1-Ch3 and unilateral VTA stimulation increased the number in the Ch1 and the ventral pallidum only. The most sensitive to these changes in the mesolimbic system were cholinergic structures providing hippocampal afferentation. Surprisingly, there was no significant increase in the number of ChAT+ neurons in the L/S group. The obtained results did not confirm any evident influence of the cholinergic systems on the VTA lesion-induced facilitation of the behavioral response evoked by contralateral VTA stimulation.
