This study examines the attitudes of Chinese residents toward pandemic travel fear, travel intention, and self-protection intention based on Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) as the study framework. Compared to previous research in this area, we employed the full suite of PMT factors in this study. An online survey was used to collect the views of 560 Chinese residents in six major Chinese cities in 2022. The results demonstrated that the PMT model provides a useful framework for understanding pandemic travel fear. Although perceived severity, perceived vulnerability and perceived response cost have significant positive relations with pandemic travel fear, perceived reward has a significant negative influence on pandemic travel fear. However, perceived response efficacy and perceived self-efficacy do not have a significant relationship with pandemic travel fear. Indeed, pandemic travel fear has significant negative and positive impacts on travel intention and self-protection intention, respectively. Practical implications of the study are discussed. Perceived travel risks arise from the uncertain and undesirable consequences associated with traveling to a destination. These perceived risks could make tourists feel reluctant to travel to a particular destination, or conversely may tempt some to visit a certain destination to feed their taste for adventure. Tourists may not perceive and react to the same types and degrees of risk in the same manner. This is due to their socially constructed knowledge and past experience associated with related incidents, which result in such incidents being perceived differently. Therefore, this paper has three purposes. First, it examines travel risk dimensions as perceived by international tourists. Second, it seeks to segment international tourists based on a combination of protective motivation theory (perceived vulnerability and severity) and travel use history theories (past travel experience). Third, it determines how each segment employs risk reduction strategies as self-protective behaviors. Thailand was chosen as the location for the study. Using perceived vulnerability and severity of risk perceptions as cluster variates, the cluster analysis of 511 questionnaires resulted in three segments of tourists being identified, with varying degrees of risk propensity and personal profiles. This study primarily aims to offer a comparative analysis of destination satisfaction across two nationalities of international tourists, namely Chinese and Australians, on their holiday experience in Phuket. The results are drawn from 259 Chinese and 277 Australian independent tourists. The findings illustrate more differences than similarities in terms of destination satisfaction between the two nationalities. The Chinese tourists were found to be less satisfied with most aspects of their holiday, as compared to the Australian tourists, although no differences were detected in their destination loyalty. In addition, destination loyalty was found to be influenced by the satisfaction of accommodation and safety, and the quality of beaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
