1. On the Detection of Aircraft Single Engine Taxi using Deep Learning Models

Abstract

The aviation industry is vital for global transportation but faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, particularly CO2 emissions from ground operations such as taxiing. Single Engine Taxiing (SET) has emerged as a promising technique to enhance fuel efficiency and sustainability. However, evaluating SET's benefits is hindered by the limited availability of SET-specific data, typically accessible only to aircraft operators. In this paper, we present a novel deep learning approach to detect SET operations using ground trajectory data. Our method involves using proprietary Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data of A320 flights to label ground movements as SET or conventional taxiing during taxi-in operations, while using only trajectory features equivalent to those available in open-source surveillance systems such as Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) or ground radar. This demonstrates that SET can be inferred from ground movement patterns, paving the way for future work with non-proprietary data sources. Our results highlight the potential of deep learning to improve SET detection and support more comprehensive environmental impact assessments.

2. On the Generalization Properties of Deep Learning for Aircraft Fuel Flow Estimation Models

Abstract

Accurately estimating aircraft fuel flow is essential for evaluating new procedures, designing next-generation aircraft, and monitoring the environmental impact of current aviation practices. This paper investigates the generalization capabilities of deep learning models in predicting fuel consumption, focusing particularly on their performance for aircraft types absent from the training data. We propose a novel methodology that integrates neural network architectures with domain generalization techniques to enhance robustness and reliability across a wide range of aircraft. A comprehensive dataset containing 101 different aircraft types, separated into training and generalization sets, with each aircraft type set containing 1,000 flights. We employed the base of aircraft data (BADA) model for fuel flow estimates, introduced a pseudo-distance metric to assess aircraft type similarity, and explored various sampling strategies to optimize model performance in data-sparse regions. Our results reveal that for previously unseen aircraft types, the introduction of noise into aircraft and engine parameters improved model generalization. The model is able to generalize with acceptable mean absolute percentage error between 2\% and 10\% for aircraft close to existing aircraft, while performance is below 1\% error for known aircraft in the training set. This study highlights the potential of combining domain-specific insights with advanced machine learning techniques to develop scalable, accurate, and generalizable fuel flow estimation models.

3. The evolution of coronal shock wave properties and their relation with solar energetic particles

Abstract

Shock waves driven by fast and wide coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are highly efficient particle accelerators involved in the production of solar energetic particle (SEP) events. The gradual SEP event measured by STEREO-A and B on October 11, 2013 had notable properties: (1) it occurred in isolation with very low background particle intensities, (2) it had a clear onset of SEPs measured in situ allowing detailed timing analyses, and (3) it was associated with a fast CME event magnetically connected with STA and B. These allowed us to investigate the temporal connection between the rapidly evolving shock properties, such as compression ratio, Mach number and geometry, and the intensity and composition of SEPs measured in situ. We use shock reconstruction techniques and multi-viewpoint imaging data from STA and B, SOHO, and SDO spacecraft to determine the kinematic evolution of the expanding shock wave. Using 3D magneto-hydrodynamic modelling we obtained shock wave properties along an ensemble of magnetic field lines connected to STA and B, estimating their uncertainties. Using a velocity dispersion analysis of the SEP data, we time shift the SEP time series and analyze the relations between their properties and the modeled shock ones, as well as the energy dependence of these relations. We find a very good temporal agreement between the formation of the modelled shock wave and the estimated release times for both electrons and protons. This simultaneous release suggests a common acceleration process. This early phase is marked at both STEREOs by elevated electron-to-proton ratios that coincide with the highly quasi-perpendicular phase of the shock, suggesting that the rapid evolution of the shock as it transits from the low to the high corona modifies the conditions under which particles are accelerated. Abstract

The cosine measure was introduced in 2003 to quantify the richness of a finite positive spanning sets of directions in the context of derivative-free directional methods. A positive spanning set is a set of vectors whose nonnegative linear combinations span the whole space. The present work extends the definition of cosine measure. In particular, the paper studies cosine measures relative to a subspace, and proposes a deterministic algorithm to compute it. The paper also studies the situation in which the set of vectors is infinite. The extended definition of the cosine measure might be useful for subspace decomposition methods.

9. Using generalized simplex methods to approximate derivatives

Abstract

This paper presents two methods for approximating a proper subset of the entries of a Hessian using only function evaluations. These approximations are obtained using the techniques called \emph{generalized simplex Hessian} and \emph{generalized centered simplex Hessian}. We show how to choose the matrices of directions involved in the computation of these two techniques depending on the entries of the Hessian of interest. We discuss the number of function evaluations required in each case and develop a general formula to approximate all order-$P$ partial derivatives. 11. Structure-Dynamics Relationship in Al-Mg-Si Liquid Alloys

Abstract

Enhancing properties and performances of aluminium alloys by a control of their solidification is pivotal in automotive and aerospace industries. The fundamental role of the structure-diffusion relationship is investigated for Al-Mg-Si liquid alloys taken as a prototype of Al-6xxx. For this purpose, first principles-based molecular dynamics simulations were performed for various Si and Mg content for Al-rich compositions, including the binary alloy counterparts. Results indicate that Mg and/or Si in alloys create a more compact ordering around Al than in pure Al, lowering diffusion. Mg promotes icosahedral short-range order, while Si displays a preference towards cubic local ordering, impacting diffusion based on their respective content. It suggests a mechanism whereby an increase in Mg content generally lowers the diffusion of each species, whereas an increase in Si content enhances their diffusion, providing insights for future alloy design., Comment: 5 figues, 18 pages

Abstract

Positive spanning sets span a given vector space by nonnegative linear combinations of their elements. These have attracted significant attention in recent years, owing to their extensive use in derivative-free optimization. In this setting, the quality of a positive spanning set is assessed through its cosine measure, a geometric quantity that expresses how well such a set covers the space of interest. In this paper, we investigate the construction of positive $k$-spanning sets with geometrical guarantees.Our results build on recently identified positive spanning sets, called orthogonally structured positive bases. We first describe how to identify such sets and compute their cosine measures efficiently. We then focus our study on positive $k$-spanning sets, for which we provide a complete description, as well as a new notion of cosine measure that accounts for the resilient nature of such sets. By combining our results, we are able to use orthogonally structured positive bases to create positive $k$-spanning sets with guarantees on the value of their cosine measures.

Abstract

Causal datasets play a critical role in advancing the field of causality. However, existing datasets often lack the complexity of real-world issues such as selection bias, unfaithful data, and confounding. To address this gap, we propose a new synthetic causal dataset, the Structurally Complex with Additive paRent causalitY (SCARY) dataset, which includes the following features. The dataset comprises 40 scenarios, each generated with three different seeds, allowing researchers to leverage relevant subsets of the dataset. Additionally, we use two different data generation mechanisms for generating the causal relationship between parents and child nodes, including linear and mixed causal mechanisms with multiple sub-types. Our dataset generator is inspired by the Causal Discovery Toolbox and generates only additive models. The dataset has a Varsortability of 0.5. Our SCARY dataset provides a valuable resource for researchers to explore causal discovery under more realistic scenarios. 18. A matrix algebra approach to approximate Hessians

Abstract

This work presents a novel matrix-based method for constructing an approximation Hessian using only function evaluations. The method requires less computational power than interpolation-based methods and is easy to implement in matrix-based programming languages such as MATLAB. As only function evaluations are required, the method is suitable for use in derivative-free algorithms. For reasonably structured sample sets, the method is proven to create an order-$1$ accurate approximation of the full Hessian. Under more specialized structures, the method is proved to yield order-$2$ accuracy. 19. Parametric study of the kinematic evolution of coronal mass ejection shock waves and their relation to flaring activity

Abstract

Coronal and interplanetary shock waves produced by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are major drivers of space-weather phenomena, inducing major changes in the heliospheric radiation environment and directly perturbing the near-Earth environment, including its magnetosphere. A better understanding of how these shock waves evolve from the corona to the interplanetary medium can therefore contribute to improving nowcasting and forecasting of space weather. Early warnings from these shock waves can come from radio measurements as well as coronagraphic observations that can be exploited to characterise the dynamical evolution of these structures. Our aim is to analyse the geometrical and kinematic properties of 32 CME shock waves derived from multi-point white-light and ultraviolet imagery taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO), and Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) to improve our understanding of how shock waves evolve in 3D during the eruption of a CME. We use our catalogue to search for relations between the shock wave's kinematic properties and the flaring activity associated with the underlying genesis of the CME piston. Past studies have shown that shock waves observed from multiple vantage points can be aptly reproduced geometrically by simple ellipsoids. The catalogue of reconstructed shock waves provides the time-dependent evolution of these ellipsoidal parameters. From these parameters, we deduced the lateral and radial expansion speeds of the shocks evolving over time. We compared these kinematic properties with those obtained from a single viewpoint by SoHO in order to evaluate projection effects. 20. Eye-Tracking for Examining Nurses’ Attention During Cardiac Arrest Simulations: A Feasibility and Acceptability Study

Abstract

Introduction: Eye-tracking offers a distinctive opportunity to assess nurses’ clinical decision-making in simulation. Although its feasibility has been established in various scenarios, most studies have focused on a single participant, typically a physician in a leadership role. The application of eye-tracking in the challenging context of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) simulations, where nurses juggle diverse roles and undertake physical tasks such as chest compressions, has yet to be explored.Objectives: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of eye-tracking with nurses’ during IHCA simulations. Additionally, the study aimed to describe eye-tracking metrics based on different resuscitation roles and to explore the relationship between eye-tracking metrics to pinpoint the most informative metrics for the design of future studies.Methods: In this single-group observational study, 56 newly hired nurses wore eye-tracking glasses during IHCA simulations. The primary feasibility criterion was the proportion of usable eye-tracking data. Secondary criteria included recruitment rate, calibration time, and glasses acceptability. The relationship among eye-tracking metrics was investigated through correlation analyses.Results: Calibration of the devices was rapid, and 85.7% of the data was usable. The glasses were comfortable, non-distracting, and did not impede nurses’ vision or performance. Data were mapped for five areas of interest: the patient’s head and chest, cardiac monitor, teammates, and resuscitation cart. Eye-tracking metrics exhibited variations based on resuscitation roles. Fixation count, fixation duration, and time to first fixation appeared to be the most informative metrics in IHCA simulation.Discussion and conclusion: These findings demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of analyzing nurses’ eye-tracking data during IHCA simulations using a role-based approach. Future research should explore correlations with additional attention measures to enhance our understanding of nurse decision-making during cardiac arrest and improve educational strategies and outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract A search for the central exclusive production of top quark-antiquark pairs ( t t ¯ $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ ) is performed for the first time using proton-tagged events in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 29.4 fb −1. The t t ¯ $$ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $$ decay products are reconstructed using the central CMS detector, while forward protons are measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. An observed (expected) upper bound on the production cross section of 0.59 (1.14) pb is set at 95% confidence level, for collisions of protons with fractional momentum losses between 2 and 20%.

Abstract

Remaining continually curious about students' mathematical thinking is challenging, yet worthwhile, in teaching practice. This paper describes and analyzes two video-based professional learning (PL) activities designed to help teachers go beyond their initial perceptions of what students understand and to identify what else they might learn about students' thinking. The findings suggest the potential of the activities to evoke different types of curiosity about student-thinking and the conditions that may support such questioning. Abstract

We used a single-case experimental research design to examine the effect of modelling (peer versus non-peer) on exercise self-efficacy in stroke survivors who participated in a community-based exercise program. Data were obtained using an ABCA design: (A1) no model/baseline 1 (3 weeks); (B) peer model (6 weeks); (C) non-peer model (6 weeks); and (A2) no model/baseline 2 (3 weeks). Four participants completed self-efficacy questionnaires after each weekly session. Overall, participants reported higher exercise self-efficacy in the model conditions (Cohen’s d range from −0.37 to 4.22), with ratings appearing highest for the non-peer model. Modelling in general may help stroke survivors increase their exercise self-efficacy. Lastly, we provide our reflections on the pragmatics of completing a study within a community setting.

Abstract

More than 20 years after the end of NASA's Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory mission, the data collected by its Imaging Compton Telescope (COMPTEL) still provide the most comprehensive and deepest view of our Universe in MeV gamma rays. While most of the COMPTEL data are archived at NASA's High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center (HEASARC), the absence of any publicly available software for their analysis means the data cannot benefit from the scientific advances made in the field of gamma-ray astronomy at higher energies. To make this unique treasure again accessible for science, we developed open source software that enables a comprehensive and modern analysis of the archived COMPTEL telescope data. Our software is based on a dedicated plug-in to the GammaLib library, a community-developed toolbox for the analysis of astronomical gamma-ray data. We implemented high-level scripts for building science analysis workflows in ctools, a community-developed gamma-ray astronomy science analysis software framework. We describe the implementation of our software and provide the underlying algorithms. Using data from the HEASARC archive, we demonstrate that our software reproduces derived data products that were obtained in the past using the proprietary COMPTEL software. We furthermore demonstrate that our software reproduces COMPTEL science results published in the literature. This brings the COMPTEL telescope data back into life, allowing them to benefit from recent advances in gamma-ray astronomy, and gives the community a means to unveil its still hidden treasures., Comment: 31 pages, 23 figures

Abstract

Summary: Background: In industrialized countries, the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appears stabilized. This study examined the incidence and phenotype of IBD in Northern France over a 30-year period. Methods: Including all IBD patients recorded in the EPIMAD population-based registry from 1988 to 2017 in Northern France, we described the incidence and clinical presentation of IBD according to age, sex and time. Findings: A total of 22,879 incident IBD cases were documented (59% (n = 13,445) of Crohn’s disease (CD), 38% (n = 8803) of ulcerative colitis (UC), 3% (n = 631) of IBD unclassified (IBDU)). Over the study period, incidence of IBD, CD and UC was 12.7, 7.2 and 5.1 per 105 person-years, respectively. Abstract

Immune checkpoint (IC) blockade and adoptive transfer of tumor-specific T-cells (ACT) are two major strategies to treat metastatic melanoma. Their combination can potentiate T-cell activation in the suppressive tumor microenvironment, but the autoimmune adverse effects associated with systemic injection of IC blockers persist with this strategy. ACT of tumor-reactive T-cells defective for IC expression would overcome this issue. For this purpose, PD-1 and TIGIT appear to be relevant candidates, because their co-expression on highly tumor-reactive lymphocytes limits their therapeutic efficacy within the tumor microenvironme,nt. Our study compares the consequences of PDCD1 or TIGIT genetic deletion on anti-tumor properties and T-cell fitness of melanoma-specific T lymphocytes. Transcriptomic analyses revealed down-regulation of cell cycle-related genes in PD-1KO T-cells, consistent with biological observations, whereas proliferative pathways were preserved in TIGITKO T-cells. Functional analyses showed that PD-1KO and TIGITKO T-cells displayed superior antitumor reactivity than their wild-type counterpart in vitro and in a preclinical melanoma model using immunodeficient mice. Interestingly, it appears that TIGITKO T-cells were more effective at inhibiting tumor cell proliferation in vivo, and persist longer within tumors than PD-1KO T-cells, consistent with the absence of impact of TIGIT deletion on T-cell fitness. Taken together, these results suggest that TIGIT deletion, over PD-1 deletion, in melanoma-specific T-cells is a compelling option for future immunotherapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACTBackground Dentistry 1.0, an era where the patient journey was embedded in fully analog realities gave way to a 2.0 era of select digitalization since the late 1990s. Now, we are arguably at another tipping point, where for the foreseeable future digital workflows and solutions are expected to influence every aspect of the patient journey and big data becomes the new healthcare currency. With this, the dental profession’s perspective on how to best serve the entire patient journey must also expand to explore unprecedented opportunities to unobstruct another layer of critical choke points and unlock further value in global oral health. Consider some examples. Today, the global patient journey is already obstructed well before the point of care due to insufficient global coverage and imbalanced geographic distribution of dentists. While there is a growing and aging global population, the majority of dentists serve only a minority of the human population. Such coverage gaps fuel the already growing trend of patients who consume health insights online. Going forward, those who respond to the needs of more empowered and well-informed patients are poised to be the partners of choice for modern patients who increasingly expect to take ownership in their own health journey. In addition, the Age of Information has decisively accelerated toward the Age of Intelligence. This expands our imagination in new ways, not only on how to keep up with, but also how to influence the latest scientific, clinical, economic, social, and technological developments for the greater good. Meanwhile, there are real dichotomies worth noting. For instance, the relevance of dental education to dental practice is under increasing pressure. The norm in dental education remains relatively analog curricula, which struggles to adapt considering the rate of change far exceeds the average dental school reality and capabilities. This means newly graduated dentists increasingly face this rapid digitalization alone. Such pressures further fuel other trends, such as the rise of corporate dentistry and acceleration of non-traditional players in the field. In a world when in any given week the equivalent of half of America passes through a Walmart, it is not hard to see why such big retailers find it attractive to enter healthcare. In this article, the authors explore key mega trends influencing dentistry and reflect on the oral healthcare ecosystem beyond the clinic, where clinical knowledge and skills are relevant and needed.Description Today’s global realities offer dentists unprecedented opportunities to expand their professional impact and presence well beyond established norms of clinical practice, academics, and research. 36. Student Struggle during Collaborative Problem-Solving in One Mathematics Classroom

Abstract

In solving mathematics problems in collaboration, students encounter a range of mathematical and social struggles. As teachers cannot possibly respond to every such struggle, they may need to respond to those with which students require most support. Yet, little is known about students' success in overcoming the various types of struggle they encounter. In this study, we examined the types of struggle students experienced as they worked together in solving a cognitively-demanding problem. We analyzed the relative proportions of the various types of struggle they encountered, their success in overcoming each type, and the resources they leveraged in doing so. While students overcame many mathematical struggles, they had less success overcoming struggles related to reaching consensus or having their questions answered by peers. We argue that teachers may merit from support in learning to attend to these latter, more social struggles. [For the complete proceedings, see ED630060.]

Abstract Background During cardiac surgery, transcranial Doppler (TCD) represents a non-invasive modality that allows measurement of red blood cell flow velocities in the cerebral arteries. TCD can also be used to detect and monitor embolic material in the cerebral circulation. Detection of microemboli is reported as a high intensity transient signal (HITS). The importance of cerebral microemboli during cardiac surgery has been linked to the increased incidence of postoperative renal failure, right ventricular dysfunction, and hemodynamic instability. The objective of this study is to determine whether the embolic load is associated with hemodynamic instability during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) separation and postoperative complications. Methods A retrospective single-centre cohort study of 354 patients undergoing cardiac surgery between December 2015 and March 2020 was conducted. Patients were divided in tertiles, where 117 patients had a low quantity of embolic material (LEM), 119 patients have a medium quantity of microemboli (MEM) and 118 patients who have a high quantity of embolic material (HEM). The primary endpoint was a difficult CPB separation. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the potential association between a difficult CPB separation and the number of embolic materials. Abstract

The catalytically inactive caspase-8-homologous protein, c-FLIP, is a potent antiapoptotic protein highly expressed in various types of cancers. c-FLIP competes with caspase-8 for binding to the adaptor protein FADD (Fas-Associated Death Domain) following death receptors’ (DRs) activation via the ligands of the TNF-R family. As a consequence, the extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway involving DRs is inhibited. The inhibition of c-FLIP activity in tumor cells might enhance DR-mediated apoptosis and overcome immune and anticancer drug resistance. Based on an in silico approach, the aim of this work was to identify new small inhibitory molecules able to bind selectively to c-FLIP and block its anti-apoptotic activity. Using a homology 3D model of c-FLIP, an in silico screening of 1880 compounds from the NCI database (National Cancer Institute) was performed. Nine molecules were selected for in vitro assays, based on their binding affinity to c-FLIP and their high selectivity compared to caspase-8. These molecules selectively bind to the Death Effector Domain 2 (DED2) of c-FLIP. We have tested in vitro the inhibitory effect of these nine molecules using the human lung cancer cell line H1703, overexpressing c-FLIP. Our results showed that six of these newly identified compounds efficiently prevent FADD/c-FLIP interactions in a molecular pull-down assay, as well as in a DISC immunoprecipitation assay. The overexpression of c-FLIP in H1703 prevents TRAIL-mediated apoptosis; however, a combination of TRAIL with these selected molecules significantly restored TRAIL-induced cell death by rescuing caspase cleavage and activation. Altogether, our findings indicate that new inhibitory chemical molecules efficiently prevent c-FLIP recruitment into the DISC complex, thus restoring the caspase-8-dependent apoptotic cascade. These results pave the way to design new c-FLIP inhibitory molecules that may serve as anticancer agents in tumors overexpressing c-FLIP.

Abstract

In studying solidification process by simulations on the atomic scale, the modeling of crystal nucleation or amorphisation requires the construction of interatomic interactions that are able to reproduce the properties of both the solid and the liquid states. Taking into account rare nucleation events or structural relaxation under deep undercooling conditions requires much larger length scales and longer time scales than those achievable by \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics (AIMD). This problem is addressed by means of classical MD simulations using a well established high dimensional neural network potential trained on a relevant set of configurations generated by AIMD. Our dataset contains various crystalline structures and liquid states at different pressures, including their time fluctuations in a wide range of temperatures considering only their energy labels. Applied to elemental aluminium, the resulting potential is shown to be efficient to reproduce the basic structural, dynamics and thermodynamic quantities in the liquid and undercooled states without the need to include neither explicitly the forces nor all kind of configurations in the training procedure. The early stage of crystallization is further investigated on a much larger scale with one million atoms, allowing us to unravel features of the homogeneous nucleation mechanisms in the fcc phase at ambient pressure as well as in the bcc phase at high pressure with unprecedented accuracy close to the \textit{ab initio} one. Abstract

The properties of positive bases make them a useful tool in derivative-free optimization (DFO) and an interesting concept in mathematics. The notion of the \emph{cosine measure} helps to quantify the quality of a positive basis. It provides information on how well the vectors in the positive basis uniformly cover the space considered. The number of vectors in a positive basis is known to be between $n+1$ and $2n$ inclusively. When the number of vectors is strictly between $n+1$ and $2n$, we say that it is an intermediate positive basis. In this paper, the structure of intermediate positive bases with maximal cosine measure is investigated. The structure of an intermediate positive basis with maximal cosine measure over a certain subset of positive bases is provided. This type of positive bases has a simple structure that makes them easy to generate with a computer software.

Abstract

Model-based methods are popular in derivative-free optimization (DFO). In most of them, a single model function is built to approximate the objective function. This is generally based on the assumption that the objective function is one blackbox. However, some real-life and theoretical problems show that the objective function may consist of several blackboxes. In those problems, the information provided by each blackbox may not be equal. In this situation, one could build multiple sub-models that are then combined to become a final model. In this paper, we analyze the relation between the accuracy of those sub-models and the model constructed through their operations. We develop a broad framework that can be used as a theoretical tool in model error analysis and future research in DFO algorithms design.

45. Sustaining at Scale: District Mathematics Specialists' Adaptations to a Teacher Leadership Preparation Program

Abstract

A common approach to scaling up a professional development program is for the researchers who designed the program to prepare teacher leaders to facilitate it at their schools. When researchers eventually leave, however, teacher leaders may receive less support. To ensure that teacher leaders continue receiving support, researchers can prepare district mathematics specialists to assume responsibility for preparing the teacher leaders. Little is known, however, about district mathematics specialists' role in sustaining, and potentially adapting, professional development programs. We examined district mathematics specialists' facilitation of an adaptive teacher leadership preparation program. Program sessions were originally facilitated by researchers then by the specialists. We analyzed the adaptations specialists made to the sessions over four years and the rationales underlying these adaptations. Specialists maintained the program's overall structure, continuing to model the facilitation of core program activities that teacher leaders would then facilitate in their site-based professional development workshops. However, they modified the thematic focus of these activities to address district goals, interests, and priorities. Adaptations were informed by specialists' intimate knowledge of what was occurring in district schools. This approach maintained activities supportive of teacher learning, but also demonstrated that the specialists took increasing ownership over the program by adapting it.

Abstract

Despite the complexity of facilitating professional development (PD) and growing attention to supporting facilitators, few tools exist for facilitators to engage in ongoing inquiry into their practice. In this article, we offer a practical measure, the Collaborative Professional Development Survey (CPDS), designed to provide facilitators with information about teachers' perceptions of aspects of the PD learning environment that research indicates matter for teachers' opportunities to learn. We illustrate how facilitators used the CPDS to support their collective inquiry into facilitation. We also illustrate the social processes that appeared to enable facilitators' productive use of the CPDS, including a routine to analyze the resulting data, and the orientations that underpinned their analysis. We discuss implications for facilitators' use of the CPDS.
