Magnetic resonance (MR) tractography of the brachial plexus (BP) is challenging due to different factors such as motion artifacts, pulsation artifacts, signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution; eddy currents induced geometric distortions, sequence parameters and choice of used coils. Notably challenging is the separation of the peripheral nerve bundles and skeletal muscles as both structures have similar fractional anisotropy values. We proposed an algorithm for robust visualization and assessment of BP root bundles using the segmentation of the spinal cord (SSC, C4-T1) as seed points for the initial starting area for the fibre tracking algorithm.Twenty-seven healthy volunteers and four patients with root avulsions underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations on a 3T MR scanner with optimized measurement protocols for diffusion-weighted images and coronal T2 weighted 3D short-term inversion recovery sampling perfection with application optimized contrast using varying flip angle evaluation sequences used for BP fibre reconstruction and MR neurography (MRN). The fibre bundles reconstruction was optimized in terms of eliminating the skeletal muscle fibres contamination using the SSC and the tracking threshold of the normalized quantitative anisotropy (NQA) on reconstruction of the BP. In our study, the NQA parameter has been used for fiber tracking instead of fractional anisotropy (FA). The diffusion data were processed in individual C4-T1 root bundles using the generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI) algorithm. Calculated diffusion parameters were statistically analysed using the two-sampleIn control subjects, no significant effect of laterality in diffusion parameters was found (P0.05) in the BP. In the central part of the BP, a significant difference between control subjects and patients at P=0.02 was found in the NQA values. Other diffusion parameters were not significantly different.Using NQA instead of FA in the proposed algorithm allowed for a better separation of muscle and root nerve bundles. The presented algorithm yields a high quality reconstruction of the BP bundles that may be helpful both in research and clinical practice.

Objectives: To compare brain responses to peroneal electrical transcutaneous neuromodulation (peroneal eTNM®) and transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), two methods for treating overactive bladder (OAB), using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The present study was not designed to compare their clinical efficacy. Materials and Methods: This study included 32 healthy adult female volunteers (average age 38.3 years (range 22−73)). Brain MRI using 3 T scanner was performed during three 8-min blocks of alternating sequences. During each 8-min block, the protocol alternated between sham stimulation (30 s) and rest (30 s) for 8 repeats; then peroneal eTNM® stimulation (30 s) and rest (30 s) for 8 repeats; then, TTNS stimulation (30 s) and rest (30 s) for 8 repeats. Statistical analysis was performed at the individual level with a threshold of p = 0.05, family-wise error (FWE)-corrected. The resulting individual statistical maps were analyzed in group statistics using a one-sample t-test, p = 0.05 threshold, false discovery rate (FDR)-corrected. Results: During peroneal eTNM®, TTNS, and sham stimulations, we recorded activation in the brainstem, bilateral posterior insula, bilateral precentral gyrus, bilateral postcentral gyrus, left transverse temporal gyrus, and right supramarginal gyrus. During both peroneal eTNM® and TTNS stimulations, but not sham stimulations, we recorded activation in the left cerebellum, right transverse temporal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, and right inferior frontal gyrus. Exclusively during peroneal eTNM® stimulation, we observed activation in the right cerebellum, right thalamus, bilateral basal ganglia, bilateral cingulate gyrus, right anterior insula, right central operculum, bilateral supplementary motor cortex, bilateral superior temporal gyrus, and left inferior frontal gyrus. Conclusions: Peroneal eTNM®, but not TTNS, induces the activation of brain structures that were previously implicated in neural control of the of bladder filling and play an important role in the ability to cope with urgency. The therapeutic effect of peroneal eTNM® could be exerted, at least in part, at the supraspinal level of neural control.

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate whether peroneal electrical Transcutaneous Neuromodulation invented for overactive bladder (OAB) treatment elicits activation in brain regions involved in neural regulation of the lower urinary tract. Materials and Methods: Among 22 enrolled healthy female volunteers, 13 were eligible for the final analysis. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) (Siemens VIDA 3T; Erlangen, Germany) was used to compare the brain region activation elicited by peroneal electrical Transcutaneous Neuromodulation with the activation elicited by sham stimulation. Each subject underwent brain fMRI recording during eight 30-second periods of rest, alternating with 30-second periods of passive feet movement using the sham device, mimicking the motor response to peroneal nerve stimulation. Subsequently, fMRI recording was performed during the analogic “off-on” stimulation paradigm using peroneal electrical transcutaneous neuromodulation. Magnetic resonance imaging data acquired during both paradigms were compared using individual and group statistics. Results: During both peroneal electrical Transcutaneous Neuromodulation and sham feet movements, we observed activation of the primary motor cortex and supplementary motor area, corresponding to the cortical projection of lower limb movement. During peroneal electrical Transcutaneous Neuromodulation, we observed significant activations in the brain stem, cerebellum, cingulate gyrus, putamen, operculum, and anterior insula, which were not observed during the sham feet movement. Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that peroneal electrical Transcutaneous Neuromodulation elicits activation of brain structures that have been previously implicated in the perception of bladder fullness and that play a role in the ability to cope with urinary urgency. Our data suggest that neuromodulation at the level of supraspinal control of the lower urinary tract may contribute to the treatment effect of peroneal electrical Transcutaneous Neuromodulation in patients with OAB.

Motor disability is a dominant and restricting symptom in multiple sclerosis, yet its neuroimaging correlates are not fully understood. We apply statistical and machine learning techniques on multimodal neuroimaging data to discriminate between multiple sclerosis patients and healthy controls and to predict motor disability scores in the patients. We examine the data of sixty-four multiple sclerosis patients and sixty-five controls, who underwent the MRI examination and the evaluation of motor disability scales. The modalities used comprised regional fractional anisotropy, regional grey matter volumes, and functional connectivity. For analysis, we employ two approaches: high-dimensional support vector machines run on features selected by Fisher Score (aiming for maximal classification accuracy), and low-dimensional logistic regression on the principal components of data (aiming for increased interpretability). We apply analogous regression methods to predict symptom severity. While fractional anisotropy provides the classification accuracy of 96.1% and 89.9% with both approaches respectively, including other modalities did not bring further improvement. Concerning the prediction of motor impairment, the low-dimensional approach performed more reliably. The first grey matter volume component was significantly correlated (R = 0.28-0.46, p0.05) with most clinical scales. In summary, we identified the relationship between both white and grey matter changes and motor impairment in multiple sclerosis. Furthermore, we were able to achieve the highest classification accuracy based on quantitative MRI measures of tissue integrity between patients and controls yet reported, while also providing a low-dimensional classification approach with comparable results, paving the way to interpretable machine learning models of brain changes in multiple sclerosis.

Functional connectivity analysis is a common approach to the characterization of brain function. While studies of functional connectivity have predominantly focused on resting-state fMRI, naturalistic paradigms, such as movie watching, are increasingly being used. This ecologically valid, yet relatively unconstrained acquisition state has been shown to improve subject compliance and, potentially, enhance individual differences. However, unlike the reliability of resting-state functional connectivity, the reliability of functional connectivity during naturalistic viewing has not yet been fully established. The current study investigates the intra-session reliability of functional connectivity during naturalistic viewing sessions to extend its understanding. Using fMRI data of 24 subjects measured at rest as well as during six naturalistic viewing conditions, we quantified the split-half reliability of each condition, as well as cross-condition reliabilities. We find that intra-session reliability is relatively high for all conditions. While cross-condition reliabilities are higher for pairings of two naturalistic viewing conditions, split-half reliability is highest for the resting state. Potential sources of variability across the conditions, as well as the strengths and limitations of using intra-session reliability as a measure in naturalistic viewing, are discussed.

Zobrazeni brachialniho plexu (BP) a lumbosakralniho plexu (LSP) pomoci magneticke rezonance (MR) umožni ziskat detailni informace využitelne v ramci diagnostiky i lecby postiženi těchto komplexnich nervových pleteni. Techniky MR využitelne ke zobrazeni BP a LSP zahrnuji metody konvencni, MR neurografii (MRN), zobrazeni difuzniho tenzoru (DTI) a MR traktografii (MRT). MRN poskytuje data o detailni anatomicke struktuře, DTI a MRT vypovidaji o funkcni integritě nervových vlaken. S dalsim vývojem a zlepsovanim těchto pokrocilých technik MR lze předpokladat jejich postupne zavaděni do standardnich vysetřovacich protokolů MR.

The present report presents a rare case in which a patient with pituitary apoplexy (PA) without compression of the optic chiasm experienced diagnosable visual impairment in the ensuing months. Endocrinologically, the condition was a prolactinoma followed by bleeding into the pituitary gland. Due to the unexplained functional changes in the patient, an electrophysiological examination (pattern electroretinogram and pattern visual evoked potentials) was performed, which verified a bilateral non-inflammatory neurogenic lesion. This finding was confirmed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) examination. Structural MRI did not reveal chiasm compression in the time sequence or alteration of the optic nerves (the diameter of the optic nerve at different distances from the eye and the diameter of the optic nerve sheath at different distances from the eye). Similarly, neither the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) nor the vessel density was altered. The present report suggests that changes in visual fields may be due to ischemia in the area of the chiasm and optic nerves, similar to PA.

Background Changes of white matter integrity in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) were documented following mainly motor/skill acquisitions physical therapy, while following neuroproprioceptive "facilitation, inhibition" (neurofacilitation) only by two pilot studies. Neurofacilitation has potential to induce white matter changes due to possibility to interfere with the neuronal tactility threshold, but stronger evidence is missing. Aim This study investigates whether neurofacilitation (three physical therapy types) induce white matter changes and if they relate to clinical improvement. Design The Three-Arm Parallel-Group Exploratory Trial (NCT04355663). Setting Each group underwent different kind of two months ambulatory therapy (Motor Program Activating Therapy, Vojta's reflex locomotion, and Functional Electric Stimulation in Posturally Corrected Position). Population MS people with moderate disability. Methods At baseline and after the program, participants underwent magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and clinical assessment. Fractional anisotropy maps obtained from DTI were further analyzed using tract-based spatial statistic exploring the mean values in the whole statistic skeleton. Moreover, additional exploratory analysis in 48 regions of white matter was done. Results 92 people were recruited. DTI data from 61 were analysed. The neurofacilitation (irrespective type of therapy) resulted in significant improvement on the Berg Balance Scale (p=0.0089), mainly driven by the Motor Program Activating Therapy. No statistically significant change in the whole statistic skeleton was observed (only a trend for decrement of fractional anisotropy after Vojta's reflex locomotion). Additional exploratory analysis confirmed significant decrement of fractional anisotropy in the right anterior corona radiata. Conclusions Neurofacilitation improved balance without much evidence of white matter integrity changes in people with MS. Clinical rehabilitation impact The study results point to the importance of neuroproprioceptive "facilitation and inhibition" physical therapy in management of balance in people with multiple sclerosis and the potential to induce white matter changes due to possibility to interfere with the neuronal tactility threshold.

Functional connectivity analysis of resting‐state fMRI data has recently become one of the most common approaches to characterizing individual brain function. It has been widely suggested that the functional connectivity matrix is a useful approximate representation of the brain's connectivity, potentially providing behaviorally or clinically relevant markers. However, functional connectivity estimates are known to be detrimentally affected by various artifacts, including those due to in‐scanner head motion. Moreover, as individual functional connections generally covary only very weakly with head motion estimates, motion influence is difficult to quantify robustly, and prone to be neglected in practice. Although the use of individual estimates of head motion, or group‐level correlation of motion and functional connectivity has been suggested, a sufficiently sensitive measure of individual functional connectivity quality has not yet been established. We propose a new intuitive summary index, Typicality of Functional Connectivity, to capture deviations from standard brain functional connectivity patterns. In a resting‐state fMRI dataset of 245 healthy subjects, this measure was significantly correlated with individual head motion metrics. The results were further robustly reproduced across atlas granularity, preprocessing options, and other datasets, including 1,081 subjects from the Human Connectome Project. In principle, Typicality of Functional Connectivity should be sensitive also to other types of artifacts, processing errors, and possibly also brain pathology, allowing extensive use in data quality screening and quantification in functional connectivity studies as well as methodological investigations., In current resting‐state fMRI studies, there is a need for a sufficiently sensitive measure of individual functional connectivity quality. In this article, we presented a new method of functional connectivity quality evaluation for rs‐fMRI data. This measure is significantly correlated with motion metrics and the results hold across atlases, preprocessing pipelines as well as different datasets including a validation set of 1,081 subjects from the Human Connectome Project.

Background Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) improves symptoms of heart failure (HF), morbidity and mortality in selected population. The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-guided left ventricular (LV) lead placement on clinical outcomes and LV reverse remodelling in CRT recipients. Methods Patients with CRT indication were randomized for CMR-guided (CMR group) or electrophysiologically guided (EP group) LV lead placement between 2011 and 2014. The target site in the CMR group was defined as the most delayed, scar-free, in the EP group as the site with the longest interval between the QRS onset and local electrogram. The primary endpoint was a combination of cardiovascular death or HF hospitalization. Secondary endpoints were New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class improvement ≥1, LV endsystolic diameter reduction >10%, B-type natriuretic peptide reduction by ≥30%. Results A total of 99 patients (47 in the CMR and 52 in the EP group) were enrolled. During a median follow-up of 47 months, primary composite endpoint occurred in 5 patients in the CMR group and 14 patients in the EP group (HR = 0.46; 95% CI: 0.16–1.32). Patients with left bundle branch block and NYHA Class >2 had better clinical outcome in the CMR group (HR = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.01–0.75). Conclusions The use of CMR did not result in significant reduction of combined endpoint of cardiovascular death or HF hospitalization in the total study population. Significant clinical benefit from CMR-guided procedure was observed in a subgroup of optimum CRT candidates with advanced HF.

International audience; In this paper we propose a method for locally adjusted optical flow-based registration of multimodal images, which uses the segmentation of the object of interest and its representation by the signed-distance function (OF dist method). We deal with non-rigid registration of the image series acquired by the Modiffied Look-Locker Inversion Recovery (MOLLI) magnetic resonance imaging sequence, which is used for a pixel-wise estimation of T 1 relaxation time. The spatial registration of the images within the series is necessary to compensate the patient's imperfect breath-holding. The evolution of intensities and a large variation of image contrast within the MOLLI image series, together with the myocardium of left ventricle (the object of interest) typically not being the most distinct object in the scene, makes the registration challenging. The paper describes all components of the proposed OF dist method and their implementation. The method is then compared to the performance of a standard mutual information maximization-based registration method, applied either to the original image (MIM) or to the signed-distance function (MIM dist). Several experiments with synthetic and real MOLLI images are carried out. On synthetic image with a single object, MIM performed the best, while OF dist and MIM dist provided better results on synthetic images with more than one object and on real images. When applied to signed-distance function of two objects of interest, MIM dist provided a larger registration error (but more homogeneously distributed) compared to OF dist. For the real MOLLI image series with left ventricle pre-segmented using a level-set method, the proposed OF dist registration performed the best, as is demonstrated visually and by measuring the increase of mutual information in the object of interest and its neighborhood.

International audience; Objective: The accuracy of phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) measurement is investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the objective to determine the magnitude of the flow underestimation due to turbulence behind a narrowed valve in a phantom experiment. Materials and Methods: An acrylic stationary flow phantom is used with three insertable plates mimicking aortic valvular stenoses of varying degrees. Positive and negative horizontal fluxes are measured at equidistant slices using standard PC-MRI sequences by 1.5T and 3T systems. The CFD model is based on the 3D lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The experimental and simulated data are compared using the Bland-Altman-derived limits of agreement. Based on the LBM results, the turbulence is quantified and confronted with the level of flow underestimation. Results: LBM gives comparable results to PC-MRI for valves up to moderate stenosis on both field strengths. The flow magnitude through a severely stenotic valve was underestimated due to signal void in the regions of turbulent flow behind the valve, consistently with the level of quantified turbulence intensity.Discussion: Flow measured by PC-MRI is affected by noise and turbulence. LBM can simulate turbulent flow efficiently and accurately, it has therefore the potential to improve clinical interpretation of PC-MRI.

Cannabis, and specifically one of its active compounds delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in recreational doses, has a variety of effects on cognitive processes. Most studies employ resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques to assess the stationary effects of cannabis and to-date one report addressed the impact of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol on the dynamics of whole-brain functional connectivity.Using a repeated-measures, within-subjects design, 19 healthy occasional cannabis users (smoking cannabis ⩽2 per week) underwent resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. Each subject underwent two scans: in the intoxicated condition, shortly after smoking a cannabis cigarette, and in the non-intoxicated condition, with the subject being free from cannabinoids for at least one week before. All sessions were randomized and performed in a four-week interval. Data were analysed employing a standard independent component analysis approach with subsequent tracking of the functional connectivity dynamics, which allowed six connectivity clusters (states) to be individuated.Using standard independent component analysis in resting state functional connectivity, a group effect was found in the precuneus connectivity. With a dynamic independent component analysis approach, we identified one transient connectivity state, characterized by high connectivity within and between auditory and somato-motor cortices and anti-correlation with subcortical structures and the cerebellum that was only found during the intoxicated condition. Behavioural measures of the subjective experiences of changed perceptions and tetrahydrocannabinol plasma levels during intoxication were associated with this state.With the help of the dynamic connectivity approach we could elucidate neural correlates of the transitory perceptual changes induced by delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in cannabis users, and possibly identify a biomarker of cannabis intoxication.

We proposed an algorithm for an accurate visualization and assessment of the major LSP bundles using the segmentation of the cauda equina as seed points for the initial starting area for the fiber tracking algorithm.Twenty-six healthy volunteers underwent MRI examinations on a 3T MR scanner using the phased array coils with optimized measurement protocols for diffusion-weighted images and coronal T2 weighted 3D short-term inversion recovery sampling perfection with application optimized contrast using varying flip angle evaluation sequences used for LSP fiber reconstruction and MR neurography (MRN).The fiber bundles reconstruction was optimized in terms of eliminating the muscle fibers contamination using the segmentation of cauda equina, the effects of the normalized quantitative anisotropy (NQA) and angular threshold on reconstruction of the LSP. In this study, the NQA parameter has been used for fiber tracking instead of fractional anisotropy (FA) and the regions of interest positioning was precisely adjusted bilaterally and symmetrically in each individual subject.The diffusion data were processed in individual L3-S2 nerve fibers using the generalized Q-sampling imaging algorithm. Data (mean FA, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity and radial diffusivity, and normalized quantitative anisotropy) were statistically analyzed using the linear mixed-effects model. The MR neurography was performed in MedINRIA and post-processed using the maximum intensity projection method to demonstrate LSP tracts in multiple planes.FA values significantly decreased towards the sacral region (P < .001); by contrast, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, radial diffusivity and NQA values significantly increased towards the sacral region (P < .001).Fiber tractography of the LSP was feasible in all examined subjects and closely corresponded with the nerves visible in the maximum intensity projection images of MR neurography. Usage of NQA instead of FA in the proposed algorithm enabled better separation of muscle and nerve fibers.The presented algorithm yields a high quality reconstruction of the LSP bundles that may be helpful both in research and clinical practice.

Ratios between opposing volumes from brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide additional information to volumes in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Brain three-dimensional MPRAGE MRI at 3T were segmented into 44 regions using FreeSurfer v6 in 75 participants. The region's size in absolute volumes and relative proportions to the whole brain volume were compared between 39 AD patients and 36 age-, education- and sex-matched normal controls (NC). Volumes of the most atrophied parts were related to the opposing volumes of the most enlarged parts as ratios. The most atrophic structures in AD were both hippocampi. By contrast, the greatest enlargements in AD were inferior parts of both lateral ventricles. The best ratio for each side was the hippocampo-horn proportion calculated as ratio: the hippocampus / (the hippocampus + inferior lateral ventricle). Its optimal cut-off of 74% yielded sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 78% on the left and sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 78% on the right. The hippocampo-horn proportion is another measure to evaluate the degree of hippocampal atrophy on brain MRI in percentages. It has a potential to be simplified into a comparison of two-dimensional corresponding areas or a visual assessment.

In this study, we use separate eye-tracking measurements and functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neuronal and behavioral response to painted portraits with direct versus averted gaze. We further explored modulatory effects of several painting characteristics (premodern vs modern period, influence of style and pictorial context). In the fMRI experiment, we show that the direct versus averted gaze elicited increased activation in lingual and inferior occipital and the fusiform face area, as well as in several areas involved in attentional and social cognitive processes, especially the theory of mind: angular gyrus/temporo-parietal junction, inferior frontal gyrus and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The additional eye-tracking experiment showed that participants spent more time viewing the portrait's eyes and mouth when the portrait's gaze was directed towards the observer. These results suggest that static and, in some cases, highly stylized depictions of human beings in artistic portraits elicit brain activation commensurate with the experience of being observed by a watchful intelligent being. They thus involve observers in implicit inferences of the painted subject's mental states and emotions. We further confirm the substantial influence of representational medium on brain activity.

Complex systems are commonly characterized by the properties of their graph representation. Dynamical complex systems are then typically represented by a graph of temporal dependencies between time series of state variables of their subunits. It has been shown recently that graphs constructed in this way tend to have relatively clustered structure, potentially leading to spurious detection of small-world properties even in the case of systems with no or randomly distributed true interactions. However, the strength of this bias depends heavily on a range of parameters and its relevance for real-world data has not yet been established. In this work, we assess the relevance of the bias using two examples of multivariate time series recorded in natural complex systems. The first is the time series of local brain activity as measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging in resting healthy human subjects, and the second is the time series of average monthly surface air temperature coming from a large reanalysis of climatological data over the period 1948-2012. In both cases, the clustering in the thresholded correlation graph is substantially higher compared with a realization of a density-matched random graph, while the shortest paths are relatively short, showing thus distinguishing features of small-world structure. However, comparable or even stronger small-world properties were reproduced in correlation graphs of model processes with randomly scrambled interconnections. This suggests that the small-world properties of the correlation matrices of these real-world systems indeed do not reflect genuinely the properties of the underlying interaction structure, but rather result from the inherent properties of correlation matrix.

To identify progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), we combined voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and support vector machine (SVM) classification using disease-specific features in multicentric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Structural brain differences were investigated at four centers between 20 patients with PSP and 20 age-matched healthy controls with T1-weighted MRI at 3T. To pave the way for future application in personalized medicine, we applied SVM classification to identify PSP on an individual level besides group analyses based on VBM. We found a major decline in gray matter density in the brainstem, insula, and striatum, and also in frontomedian regions, which is in line with current literature. Moreover, SVM classification yielded high accuracy rates above 80% for disease identification in imaging data. Focusing analyses on disease-specific regions-of-interest (ROI) led to higher accuracy rates compared to a whole-brain approach. Using a polynomial kernel (instead of a linear kernel) led to an increased sensitivity and a higher specificity of disease detection. Our study supports the application of MRI for individual diagnosis of PSP, if combined with SVM approaches. We demonstrate that SVM classification provides high accuracy rates in multicentric data—a prerequisite for potential application in diagnostic routine.

The study is designed to determine the relationship between the progress of the wet form of age-related macular degeneration and the activity of the visual cortex examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Ten patients with the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (9 female and 1 male) with a mean age of 74.7 years (58–85 years) at various stages of bilateral involvement of the disease were included. Patients did not suffer from any other ocular nor neurological disease. All the patients underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging examinations with stimulation of both eyes using a black-and-white checkerboard of size 25.8 × 16.2 degrees. The group was compared with a group of healthy subjects with an average age of 54.1 years (45–65 years). For statistical evaluation, the Mann-Whitney U test was used. Comparing the extent of visual cortex activations we found a statistically significant difference between both the groups (p = 0.0247). However, the dependence of functional magnetic resonance imaging activity on visual acuity was not statistically significant (p = 0.223). We conclude that in patients with the wet form of age-related macular degeneration, lower functional magnetic resonance imaging activity of the visual cortex was found compared with the control group of healthy subjects. Dependence of functional magnetic resonance imaging activity on visual acuity was not statistically significant.

In the last years, there has been a considerable increase of research into the neuroimaging correlates of inter-individual temperament and character variability-an endeavour for which the term 'personality neuroscience' was coined. Among other neuroimaging modalities and approaches, substantial work focuses on functional connectivity in resting state (rs-FC) functional magnetic resonance imaging data. In the current paper, we set out to independently query the questions asked in a highly cited study that reported a range of functional connectivity correlates of personality dimensions assessed by the widely used 'Big Five' Personality Inventory. Using a larger sample (84 subjects) and an equivalent data analysis pipeline, we obtained widely disagreeing results compared to the original study. Overall, the results were in line with the hypotheses of no relation between functional connectivity and personality, when more precise permutation-based multiple testing procedures were applied. The results demonstrate that as with other neuroimaging studies, great caution should be applied when interpreting the findings, among other reasons due to multiple testing problem involved at several levels in many neuroimaging studies. Of course, the current study results can not ultimately disprove the existence of some link between personality and brain's intrinsic functional architecture, but clearly shows that its form is very likely different and much more subtle and elusive than was previously reported.

Purpose To characterize the relationship between superparamagnetic ferritin-bound iron and diffusion tensor scalars in vitro, and validate the results in vivo. Materials and Methods The in vitro model consisted of a series of 40-mL 1.1% agarose gels doped with ferritin covering and exceeding those concentrations normally found within healthy human gray matter. Additionally, regions of interest were placed in the caudate, putamen, and globus pallidus of 29 healthy volunteer subjects 19–80 years of age. Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill sequence (CPMG) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were collected at 1.5 Tesla (T) and 3T in vitro, and at 1.5T in vivo. Results In vitro, linear relationships were observed between ferritin-bound iron concentration, R2 (1/T2) and 1/SNR. Eigenvalue repulsion with increasing R2 (decreasing SNR) was reflected in an artifactual increase of fractional anisotropy. In vivo, similar relationships were observed, with mean diffusivity also decreasing linearly with increasing R2. Lambda 3 showed the strongest correlation with R2 both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion The observation that DTI metrics correlate with ferritin-bound iron is an important consideration in the design and interpretation of studies exploring the diffusion characteristics of gray matter regions, especially in studies focused on adolescence as well as diseases associated with altered brain-iron load such as pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration, Huntington disease and multiple system atrophy. We evaluated the clinical utility of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) combined with a novel high-sensitivity troponin T assay (hs-cTnT) in the diagnosis of inflammatory cardiomyopathy. CMR, measurement of hs-cTnT, and endomyocardial biopsy were performed in 42 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and a short-term history of heart failure (median 2 months, interquartile range 1 to 3.5). The patients were followed up for 25 ± 9 months for events. Endomyocardial biopsy revealed myocarditis in 15 subjects (36%). The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of the individual CMR tissue parameters for myocardial inflammation was 40%, 96%, and 76% for early gadolinium enhancement, 87%, 44%, and 60% for late gadolinium enhancement, 47%, 89%, and 74% for pericardial effusion, and 67%, 85%, and 79% for any 2 of the criteria simultaneously, respectively. An assessment of myocardial edema on T(2)-weighted imaging and/or hs-cTnT assay were inadequate for the diagnosis. The extent of late gadolinium enhancement and increased hs-cTnT concentration were significant predictors of a composite end point of cardiac death, urgent heart transplantation, and hospitalization for worsening heart failure (hazard ratio 1.1, 95% confidence interval 1.0 to 1.2, per percentage of left ventricular mass; and hazard ratio 2.2, 95% confidence interval 1.4 to 3.5, per ln ng/L; p = 0.008 and p = 0.001, respectively). In conclusion, the results of the present study have demonstrated a modest performance for CMR and a limited use of the hs-cTnT assay in the diagnosis of inflammatory cardiomyopathy. Nonetheless, in these patients, CMR and/or hs-cTnT assessment seems to be useful for the prediction of the clinical outcome.

There is scarce evidence regarding the use of iron chelators in patients with hereditary hemochromatosis who are intolerant of phlebotomy or erythrocytapheresis. A 52-year-old man with genetically confirmed HFE hemochromatosis presented with liver disease and heart failure with severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Because of anemia after initial treatment, we added intravenous deferoxamine followed by oral deferiprone to less frequent erythrocytapheresis, which normalized systolic function within 1 year. Repeated cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed improvement of the T2* relaxation time. This report illustrates the beneficial effect of iron chelators in individuals with HFE hemochromatosis and poor tolerance of erythrocytapheresis.

V praci chceme doložit, že opakovane vysetřeni koncentrace B-natriuretickeho peptidu (BNP) v krvi může přispět k rozhodovani o lecebnem postupu u nemocneho se srdecnim selhanim. Popisujeme připad pokrocileho selhani u nemocneho se spongiozni kardiomyopatii, ktereho jsme zařadili v urgentnim pořadi na cekaci listinu transplantace srdce. Dalsi vývoj byl neocekavaně přiznivý a nemocneho dosud uspěsně lecime konzervativně. Casným ukazatelem ustupu znamek pokrocileho srdecniho selhani byl pokles koncentrace BNP.

Purpose : To assess the entire geometric and dosimetric (relative) uncertainties of the radiosurgery procedure with the Leksell gamma knife. Materials and methods : The entire Leksell gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery treatment procedure was simulated with the use of a special water filled head phantom and polymer-gel dosimeter evaluated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). A test vessel filled with the polymer-gel dosimeter was fixed in the head phantom. The phantom underwent stereotactic NMR imaging, treatment planning and then irradiation according to the treatment plan prepared exactly the same way as in the ordinary treatment procedure for a patient. The treatment plan was represented by one isocenter positioned approximately centrally in the head phantom. This procedure was subsequently repeated for all four collimators (4, 8, 14, 18 mm) used on the Leksell gamma knife. Evaluation of dosimeters was performed on a Siemens EXPERT 1 T NMR scanner. Dose profiles in X , Y and Z axes through the ellipsoidal shaped dose distribution were obtained to compare experimental results from the irradiated phantom with the treatment planning system calculations. Results : Reasonable agreement was observed between the treatment planning system calculations of relative dose distribution and the measured data. The maximum observed deviation in the spatial position between the center of the measured and calculated dose profiles was 0.6 mm. The maximum observed difference in full width of half maximum between calculated and measured profiles was 1.2 mm. Conclusions : The use of polymer-gel dosimetry for a verification of stereotactic procedures has some unique advantages that can be summarized as follows: the dosimeter itself is tissue equivalent, three-dimensional dose distributions can be measured and the dosimeter allows simulation of the patient's procedures without any limitations.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in patients with Parkinson's disease during deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (three patients) and during deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermedius nucleus of the thalamus (one patient). All showed an increase in blood oxygenation level-dependent signal in the subcortical regions ipsilateral to the stimulated nucleus. This effect cannot be simply explained by a mechanism of depolarization blockade; rather, it is caused by overstimulation of the target nucleus, resulting in the suppression of its spontaneous activity. We confirm that fMRI during deep brain stimulation is a safe method with considerable potential for elucidating the functional connectivity of the stimulated nuclei.

Examined are sources of brain activity, contributing to EEG patterns which correspond to motor imagery during training to control brain–computer interface (BCI). To identify individual source contribution into EEG recorded during the training, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was employed. Those independent components, for which the BCI system classification accuracy was at maximum, were treated as relevant to performing the motor imagery tasks. Activities of the three most relevant components demonstrate well exposed event related desynchronization (ERD) and event related synchronization (ERS) of the mu-rhythm during imagining of contra- and ipsilateral hand and feet movements. To reveal neurophysiological nature of these components we solved the inverse EEG problem in order to localize the sources of brain activity causing these components to appear in EEG. Individual geometry of brain and its covers provided by anatomical MR images, was taken into account when localizing the sources. The sources were located in hand and feet representation areas of the primary somatosensory cortex (Brodmann areas 3a). Their positions were close to foci of BOLD activity obtained in fMRI study.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) is caused mainly by the hypofunction of the inner ear, but recent findings point also toward a central component of presbycusis. We used MR morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with a 3T MR system with the aim to study the state of the central auditory system in a group of elderly subjects (>65years) with mild presbycusis, in a group of elderly subjects with expressed presbycusis and in young controls. Cortical reconstruction, volumetric segmentation and auditory pathway tractography were performed. Three parameters were evaluated by morphometry: the volume of the gray matter, the surface area of the gyrus and the thickness of the cortex. In all experimental groups the surface area and gray matter volume were larger on the left side in Heschl's gyrus and planum temporale and slightly larger in the gyrus frontalis superior, whereas they were larger on the right side in the primary visual cortex. Almost all of the measured parameters were significantly smaller in the elderly subjects in Heschl's gyrus, planum temporale and gyrus frontalis superior. Aging did not change the side asymmetry (laterality) of the gyri. In the central part of the auditory pathway above the inferior colliculus, a trend toward an effect of aging was present in the axial vector of the diffusion (L1) variable of DTI, with increased values observed in elderly subjects. A trend toward a decrease of L1 on the left side, which was more pronounced in the elderly groups, was observed. The effect of hearing loss was present in subjects with expressed presbycusis as a trend toward an increase of the radial vectors (L2L3) in the white matter under Heschl's gyrus. These results suggest that in addition to peripheral changes, changes in the central part of the auditory system in elderly subjects are also present; however, the extent of hearing loss does not play a significant role in the central changes.

Objective: To show whether there is a correlation between visual field changes in normotensive glaucoma and changes in functional magnetic resonance of the visual cortex.Methods and subjects: The authors examined eight normotensive glaucoma patients (stage initial to medium) by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Measurements were performed on a Philips Achieva 3T TX MR system using the BOLD method. For visual stimulation, a black and white checkerboard with an alternating negativity frequency of 2 Hz was used. Each measurement consisted of a block scheme with 5 intervals of an active phase lasting 30s followed by 5 resting intervals of equal duration. The measured data were processed on SPM software.A comprehensive ophthalmological examination was supplemented by an examination of the visual field by means of a fast threshold program. The sum of sensitivity in the field of vision homolateral halves (range 0 to 22 degrees) was compared with a range of fMRI activity contra lateral visual cortex. Data collected from the patients were compared with a group of eight healthy controls.Results: The collected data was subjected to statistical analysis (nonparametric Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient) which showed a weak indirect correlation between changes in the field of vision and changes in the visual cortex. R=-0,270 (p=0,558), R=-0,071 (p=0,879) respectively.Conclusion: The authors demonstrated that in the patients with normotensive glaucoma there are no corresponding functional changes in the cerebral cortex, unlike hypertensive glaucoma where the advanced stage of glaucoma changes was associated with lower activation of the visual cortex. They assume that normotensive glaucoma has different pathogenetic behavior than hypertensive glaucoma.

FOXP2, the first gene known to be involved in the development of speech and language, can be considered to be, a priori, a candidate gene in schizophrenia, given the mounting evidence that the underlying core deficit in this disease could be a failure of structures relevant to normal language processing. To investigate the potential link between grey matter concentration (GMC) changes in patients with schizophrenia and the FOXP2 rs2396753 polymorphism previously reported to be associated with hallucinations in schizophrenia, we analysed high-resolution anatomical magnetic resonance images of 40 genotyped patients with schizophrenia and 36 healthy controls, using optimised voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Here we show that the common SNP rs2396753 (C > A) gene variant of the FOXP2 gene has significant effects on GMC in patients with schizophrenia, within regions of the brain known to be affected by this disease. Our data suggest that GMC reductions in schizophrenia may be driven by C allele carriers of the FOXP2 gene variant.

In this contribution, a parallel implementation of the finite volume solver is introduced, designated to numerically solve the initial boundary value problem for the Allen–Cahn equation with anisotropy on large 3D grids. The choice of a suitable numerical scheme is discussed and its convergence properties are investigated by means of evaluation of the experimental order of convergence. Afterwards, the consequent limitations for the theoretical error estimate are pointed out. Furthermore, the results of parallel algorithm efficiency measurements are shown, based on extensive tests performed on high performance computing systems. The final part gives a brief overview of a magnetic resonance tractography (neural tract tracking and visualization) method consisting in the solution of the above problem.
