To understand the spatiotemporal overlap in the habitat use of sympatric predators, we studied longitudinal activity and reservoir section and depth use of pike (Esox lucius), pikeperch (Sander lucioerca) and catfsh (Silurus glanis) in the Římov Reservoir, using an autonomous telemetry system for 11 months. We found signifcant diferences among these species in studied parameters that varied considerably over tracked period. Pike consistently used the same sections of the reservoir, while pikeperch and catfsh frequently visited a tributary during the warm season (late spring and early autumn), and moved closer to the dam during the cold season (late autumn to early spring). Pike longitudinal activity was highest in the cold season, pikeperch in the warm season, and catfsh activity peaked in both seasons. Overlap in the depth use among species was higher in the warm season, when all species used the upper layer of the water column, and lower in the cold season, when pikeperch and catfsh used deeper areas. These results demonstrated overlay and temporal variation of habitat use among these predators, as well as potential spatiotemporal space for their direct ecological interactions. Small lakes and ponds occupy an enormous surface area of inland freshwater and represent an important terrestrial–water interface. Disturbances caused by extreme weather events can have substantial effects on these ecosystems. Here, we analysed the dynamics of nutrients and the entire plankton community in two flood events and afterwards, when quasi-stable conditions were established, to investigate the effect of such disturbances on a small forest pond. We show that floodings result in repeated washout of resident organisms and hundredfold increases in nutrient load. Despite this, the microbial community recovers to a predisturbance state within two weeks of flooding through four well-defined succession phases. Reassembly of phytoplankton and especially zooplankton takes up to two times longer and features repetitive and adaptive patterns. Release of dissolved nutrients from the pond is associated with inflow rates and community recovery, and returns to predisturbance levels before microbial compositions recover. Our findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying functional resilience of small waterbodies and are relevant to global change-induced increases in weather extremes. Resilience of freshwater microbial communities to flooding is revealed by high-resolution in situ sampling experiments in a forest pond during two extreme rain events.

These results demonstrated ability of predators to actively inspect a large portion of the reservoir in both longitudinal and vertical dimensions, although differing in the timing of their habitat use and activity.

Fish respond to predation threat by size/cohort-dependent presence in particular habitats and this may contribute to sexual segregation between habitats in species with sexual size dimorphism (SSD). The present study examines the validity of the “predation risk hypothesis” and importance of SSD on habitat (pelagic/inshore) segregation and dietary differences between sexes in three cyprinids with various magnitudes of SSD-roach (Rutilus rutilus), freshwater bream (Abramis brama) and bleak (Alburnus alburnus). Fish were sampled using gillnets over five consecutive years in the Řimov Reservoir. Habitat segregation with female overrepresentation in the pelagic habitat was found in the most sexually dimorphic species with 26% bigger females—the roach. When analysis of habitat segregation was size-controlled, this segregation ceased to confirm the importance of SSD. Freshwater bream sexes (2% SSD) differed in diet but did not differ in habitat occupation. Bleak sexes were not segregated. Larger roach individuals (predominantly females) are less threatened by gape-limited predators and consequently they can occupy the risky but optimal (for zooplankton acquisition) pelagic habitat. Our results demonstrate that habitat segregation is present in the species with the most pronounced SSD.

Ecological quality assessment of non-natural water bodies is, in contrast to natural systems, less developed and requires determining biological indicators that reliably reflect environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressures. This study was motivated to propose fish indicators appropriate for assessment of reservoir ecosystems in central Europe. We analysed changes in water quality, total biomass and the taxonomic, trophic and size composition of fish communities along the longitudinal axes of four elongated, deep-valley reservoirs. Due to high nutrient inputs from their catchments, the reservoirs exhibited pronounced within-system gradients in primary productivity and water transparency. Although fish communities were similar among the reservoirs and dominated by few native species, the community structure and biomass systematically changed along the longitudinal axes of the reservoirs. The biomass and proportion of planktivores/benthivores in the fish community were highest at eutrophic sites near the river inflow and declined substantially towards deep, more oligotrophic sites close to the dam. The biomass and proportion of piscivores significantly increased downstream within the reservoirs alongside improving water quality. At species level, perch Perca fluviatilis and bream Abramis brama responded most sensitively, although in opposite directions, to the longitudinal environmental gradient. The major longitudinal changes in fish community characteristics were found to be consistent between pelagic and benthic habitats. The results of this study suggest that fish communities are appropriate indicators of eutrophication and can be used for ecological quality assessment of non-natural lentic water bodies, such as reservoirs. Moreover, our results underline the necessity to consider within-system gradients in water quality and the fish community when planning sampling programmes for deep-valley reservoirs.

Fish recruitment in riverine reservoirs is not fully understood because the long-term data series required for standard stock–recruitment models are often lacking. In this study, two unrelated piscivorous species with different ecologies, asp ( Leuciscus aspius ) and pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca ), were investigated over a 14-year period in a reservoir in the Czech Republic using a novel informative statistical approach based on dimension reduction methods. This method is useful for situations in which potential predictors are equal to, or exceed, the length of the time series. Recruitment of asp fry was affected by zooplankton abundance, predator density and temperature. Recruitment of pikeperch fry measured with seine and trawls was only affected by the number of predators, while recruitment of pikeperch fry estimated with gillnet data was also affected by temperature and water level fluctuation. Although gillnets are commonly used sampling method, it seems to be inappropriate for developing fry predicting model. This research also highlights the use of a novel approach to dimension reduction for analysis of factors affecting recruitment using shorter time series (in our case 13 years).

Understanding spatial distribution of organisms in heterogeneous environment remains one of the chief issues in ecology. Spatial organization of freshwater fish was investigated predominantly on large-scale, neglecting important local conditions and ecological processes. However, small-scale processes are of an essential importance for individual habitat preferences and hence structuring trophic cascades and species coexistence. In this work, we analysed the real-time spatial distribution of pelagic freshwater fish in the Římov Reservoir (Czechia) observed by hydroacoustics in relation to important environmental predictors during 48 hours at 3-h interval. Effect of diurnal cycle was revealed of highest significance in all spatial models with inverse trends between fish distribution and predictors in day and night in general. Our findings highlighted daytime pelagic fish distribution as highly aggregated, with general fish preferences for central, deep and highly illuminated areas, whereas nighttime distribution was more disperse and fish preferred nearshore steep sloped areas with higher depth. This turnover suggests prominent movements of significant part of fish assemblage between pelagic and nearshore areas on a diel basis. In conclusion, hydroacoustics, GIS and spatial modelling proved as valuable tool for predicting local fish distribution and elucidate its drivers, which has far reaching implications for understanding freshwater ecosystem functioning.

Man-made reservoirs are common across the world and provide a wide range of ecological services. Environmental conditions in riverine reservoirs are affected by the changing climate, catchment-wide processes and manipulations with the water level, and water abstraction from the reservoir. Long-term trends of environmental conditions in reservoirs thus reflect a wider range of drivers in comparison to lakes, which makes the understanding of reservoir dynamics more challenging. We analysed a 32-year time series of 36 environmental variables characterising weather, land use in the catchment, reservoir hydrochemistry, hydrology and light availability in the small, canyon-shaped Řimov Reservoir in the Czech Republic to detect underlying trends, trend reversals and regime shifts. To do so, we fitted linear and piecewise linear regression and a regime shift model to the time series of mean annual values of each variable and to principal components produced by Principal Component Analysis. Models were weighted and ranked using Akaike information criterion and the model selection approach. Most environmental variables exhibited temporal changes that included time-varying trends and trend reversals. For instance, dissolved organic carbon showed a linear increasing trend while nitrate concentration or conductivity exemplified trend reversal. All trend reversals and cessations of temporal trends in reservoir hydrochemistry (except total phosphorus concentrations) occurred in the late 1980s and during 1990s as a consequence of dramatic socioeconomic changes. After a series of heavy rains in the late 1990s, an administrative decision to increase the flood-retention volume of the reservoir resulted in a significant regime shift in reservoir hydraulic conditions in 1999. Our analyses also highlight the utility of the model selection framework, based on relatively simple extensions of linear regression, to describe temporal trends in reservoir characteristics. This approach can provide a solid basis for a better understanding of processes in freshwater reservoirs.

Environmental changes can exert strong pressure on freshwater biota and lead to unwanted alterations of local communities and deterioration of ecosystem services. Disentangling the links between environmental and community changes is, therefore, essential to understand and predict the impact of human activities on freshwater ecosystems. This is particularly relevant for man-made freshwater reservoirs that represent a nexus between anthropogenic, environmental, and biotic effects. Reservoir food webs depend strongly on phytoplankton dynamics, which are affected by abiotic conditions, nutrient availability and grazing pressure by zooplankton. We studied the effects of relevant environmental drivers (hydrochemistry, hydrodynamics and zooplankton) on the composition, diversity and community stability of main morpho-functional phytoplankton groups over 32 years in the Řimov Reservoir (Czech Republic). Environmental conditions in the reservoir are characterised by three distinct periods (1983–89, 1990–99, and 2000–14) defined by shifts and breakpoints in temporal trends in reservoir hydrochemistry and hydraulic conditions, and we examined if and how phytoplankton responded to these abrupt changes. We found significant differences in phytoplankton composition among the three periods. Phytoplankton underwent a substantial compositional shift towards a dominance of pennate diatoms. Time-lag analysis of dissimilarity in phytoplankton composition revealed higher and stochastic annual variations until 1999, followed by a lower variability and divergence in phytoplankton composition in subsequent years. Changes in overall phytoplankton assemblage and most abundant morpho-functional phytoplankton groups were driven mainly by hydrochemical (total nitrogen) and hydrodynamic variables (inflow rate, surface level and mixing depth) and less by zooplankton dynamics. These results suggest that phytoplankton are driven primarily by nutrient input and water regime, both of which can be appropriately managed to support valuable ecosystem services provided by phytoplankton in freshwater reservoirs.

We investigated diel habitat use of fish covering the littoral and pelagic zones of the Řimov Reservoir (Czech Republic) and analyzed the influence of predator presence and of shifting feeding habitats in all dominant species and age groups. Our sampling revealed distinctive diel changes of fish distribution in the reservoir, which were age- and species-dependent. The overall abundance of subadult fish in littoral habitats was significantly higher at night than during the daytime. Subadults were almost absent in pelagic habitat during the day and their presence increased during the night, although densities were smaller than in the littoral. Adults preferred the pelagic zone during the day and partly migrated to the littoral at night. Potential fish predators were most likely responsible for small fish avoidance of the littoral and pelagic zones during day. Higher availability of food in the littoral was the most important driver of the high occurrence of subadults at night. Day preference of pelagic zone by adults is most likely caused by higher profitability of this habitat in comparison with littoral. The reasons for night inshore migration of adults are not obvious, but the homogenization of their distribution or resting in the littoral could explain such behavior.

The distribution of age 0+ percids (perch, Perca fluviatilis and pikeperch, Sander lucioperca) was investigated in a shallow, wellmixed reservoir during a 24-h period in late May, using acoustic and netting methods. Diel vertical migrations (DVMs) were acoustically recorded between the layers close to the bottom and the whole water column. The netting data showed a high abundance of larvae and juveniles at night (nearly 1 ind m-3, or 6 ind m-2), whereas negligible numbers of age 0+ percids were present in the water column during the day (3% of night abundance). Age 0+ percids remained during the day in the layer very close to bottom. Smaller pikeperch larvae dominated the pelagic age 0+ fish assemblage during daylight, while larger perch prevailed at night. A strong difference between day and night abundances along with a clear pattern discerned by acoustic methods revealed the DVM of age 0+ percids. Analyses of the fish digestive tract contents indicate that DVM was not governed by feeding behaviour, but rather a defensive strategy against predation. This is in agreement with the size distribution of age 0+ percids, since they were smaller in water column during the day as opposed to the night.

The relative importance of interference and exploitative competition from Daphnia was tested in contrast to known role of Cyclops vicinus predation, influencing the rotifer community in Řimov Reservoir during spring period. The abundances of five dominant rotifer species and their birth and death rates were analysed, together with changes in chl-a concentration, HNF, bacteria biomass and the abundances of predator and competitor species, from high frequency sampling. Development of loricated species (Keratella cochlearis, K. quadrata and Kellicottia longispina) was driven predominantly by food availability. The dominant soft-bodied species Polyarthra spp. and Synchaeta lakowitziana were affected predominantly through C. vicinus predation. The role of mechanical interference from D. galeata, although may be important in a limited periods was overclouded by predation and exploitative competition in general. Piscivory in cyprinids (Cyprinidae) is extremely rare. Specifically, common bream (Abramis brama) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) are zooplanktivorous fish in deep lentic waters. Nevertheless, we observed predation by these two cyprinids under natural conditions in the Vír Reservoir, Czech Republic. We conducted diet analysis for cyprinids caught by trawling and gillnets and the large amount of young-of-the-year (YOY) perch (Perca fluviatilis), with sizes of 37-52 mm standard length, were found in their digestive tracts. In 2010, a large amount of YOY perch caused a significant decrease in Daphnia spp. size and abundance in the reservoir. Hence, a food deficit was induced for the cyprinids, apparent also from the poor nutritional condition of common bream which was much worse than the condition of those in similar reservoirs. Common carp and common bream shifted to forced piscivory, and they utilized the YOY perch as an alternative food source. In contrast, smaller species, such as roach (Rutilus rutilus) and bleak (Alburnus alburnus), widely utilized planktonic cyanobacteria. In the following year, YOY perch occurred in significantly lower numbers and conversely, Daphnia spp. size and abundance were significantly higher. The forced piscivory was not observed. Our results indicate a switch to forced piscivory by cyprinids, which was caused by a shortage of their natural food source. Moreover, this phenomenon presents an effective mechanism for reduction in the numbers of YOY perch, ensuring the stability of the ecosystem.

The distribution and diet of age 0+ fish were studied in the deep canyon-shaped Řimov Reservoir (Czech Republic), which is characterized by a longitudinal trophic gradient. During late summer of two years, 0+ fish were sampled from inshore and offshore habitats along the longitudinal reservoir axis. Offshore catches of 0+ fish from the surface layer were dominated by roach (Rutilus rutilus ), bream (Abramis brama ) and perch (Perca fluviatilis ), whereas in the deeper open water perch predominated. Inshore catches of 0+ fish were constituted mainly by perch and roach. The proportions of roach in the inshore catches were highest at the upper and most eutrophic part of the reservoir, whereas the proportions of perch in the inshore catches were higher at the downstream areas. Total catches of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish increased upstream in the reservoir. Offshore 0+ perch were of consistently smaller size than inshore 0+ perch. Inshore 0+ perch had significantly smaller size at the upstream reservoir part than at the downstream, more lacustrine regions. The diet of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish consisted predominantly of crustacean zooplankton. The structuring role and predation impact of Cyclops vicinus on the rotifer community was studied using in situ enclosure experiments in Řimov Reservoir during the spring of 2000. Seasonal changes in abundance and birth rates of the rotifer species Synchaeta lakowitziana, Polyarthra spp., Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia longispina were related to predation pressure, i.e. selectivity and cropping rates of C. vicinus. All four rotifer species were found to be consumed by C. vicinus whose predation rates showed a marked succession through the spring period and corresponded to changes in the relative abundance of the pelagic species. The highest predation rates exhibited by C. vicinus were on Synchaeta lakowitziana and Polyarthra spp., being 11.3 and 6.4 ind Cyclops ‐1 day ‐1 respectively. The activity of the predator switched among three types of preferred food during the spring period. The most preferred, Synchaeta, was replaced by Polyarthra after Synchaeta became extinct and these species were replaced by Keratella when both soft-bodied forms were not available in sufficient quantities. Loricated species (K. cochlearis and K. longispina) were consumed at a slower rate. We calculated the proportion of rotifer production cropped day ‐1 in order to estimate the predation impact of C. vicinus, which ranged from 11.6 to more than 100% over time and rotifer species. This shows that relative predation impact can be high not only on species most strongly selected, but also on species which are not selected.

In July 2008, early juvenile tubenose goby Proterorhinus semilunaris were found in nocturnal pelagic waters of the Vranov Reservoir, Czech Republic. Presence of benthic-living prey in the guts of these fish suggested migration between benthic and pelagic habitats.
