Introduction: The term omitted- missing nursing care is a new term in this profession, Czech and Slovak nurses do not know the term or its meaning. One of the reasons is that the omitted nursing care is not a commonly used term in any country, and it is very difficult to start using it without a deeper understanding of the term. The omitted-missing nursing care is not the only term used to describe the phenomenon of a failure to provide certain aspects of the required standard nursing care. Several other terms are used in literature, such as "unfinished nursing care", "assigned nursing care" or "nursing care allocation". Omitted-missing nursing care causes failure to provide the patient with necessary nursing activities. This increases the risk of adverse negative events in patients leading to increased healthcare costs. Objective: To find out the perception of omitted-missing nursing care and the working environment by nurses, to find out the satisfaction of patients with the nursing care provided and the occurrence of undesirable events in connection with nursing care. Methods: Data were collected in two standard wards of a large hospital. PIRNCA-CZ was used to determine the omitted nursing care perceived by nurses. The group consisted of 49 sisters. Patient satisfaction with care was assessed using the standardized patient satisfaction scale (PSS). The group consisted of 192 patients. Results: The most omitted and inadequate nursing activities concerned the area of safe procedure for administration of enteral or parenteral nutrition, helping patients in eating, providing hygienic and skin care, wound treatment and adherence to aseptic procedures. The most serious reasons for the delay or failure to provide nursing care were reported by nurses to have unplanned patients' admissions and discharges the day, insufficient nursing staff, lack of support staff, and worsening of the patient's condition. The nurses rated the work environment as favourable. The nurses evaluated the area of staffing and adequacy of resources as unfavourable working environment. Patient satisfaction with care was influenced only by the patient's health. Patients best rated the professionalism and behaviour of nurses. The most adverse events occurred in connection with non-compliance with aseptic procedures and medication errors. Health-related infections were most often related to peripheral vascular infections, surgical site infections and urinary tract infections. Conclusion: The results of the survey serve to obtain the first information from the research in the Czech clinical environment and contribute to the initiation of a discussion on the issue and consequences of omitted-missing nursing care. Background: Nursing shortages, the substitution of practical nurses for registered nurses, an ageing workforce, the decreasing number of nurse graduates and the increasing migration of young nurses are important factors associated with the hospital safety climate in Central European countries. Aims: The aim of the study was to investigate nurses' perceptions of the safety climate in four selected central European countries (Croatia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia) and to determine the relationship between safety climate and unfinished nursing care. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was used. The sample consisted of 1353 European nurses from four countries. Instruments used were the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture and the Perceived Implicit Rationing of Nursing Care. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses. Results: Significant differences were found between countries in all unit/hospital/outcome dimensions. 'Perceived Patient Safety' and 'Reporting of Incident Data' were associated with aspects of 'Organizational Learning' and 'Feedback and Communication about Error'. Higher prevalence of unfinished nursing care is associated with more negative perceptions of patient safety climate. Conclusions: Cross‐cultural comparisons allow us to examine differences and similarities in safety dimensions across countries. The areas with potential for initiating strategies for improvement in all four countries are 'Staffing', 'Non‐punitive Response to Error' and 'Teamwork across Hospital Units'. Implications for nursing and health policy: 'Feedback and Communicating about Error' and 'Organizational Learning ‐ Continuous Improvement' were the main predictors of 'Overall Perception of Patient Safety' and 'Reporting of Incident Data'. Therefore, nurse managers should focus on how to empower nurses in these areas in order to foster a no‐blame culture and effective reporting. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the health status of elderly patients admitted to long-term care institutions, focusing on their functional ability and mental health. Methods: For a comprehensive review of a sample of 97 patients (29 men and 68 women, average age 80.9 years) a standardized interRAI LTCF v. 09 form was used, which was developed for long-term care institutions. The survey was implemented in October 2009 in a long-term care institution in Ostrava and a long-term care institution in Odry. Statistical data analysis was carried by Chi2 test ( = 0.05). Results: Polymorbidity occurred in 21 of the elderly (average of 2.7 diseases in one patient), the most frequent disease was coronary artery disease, and the most common health problem was fatigue. Elderly patients who are dependent on basic self-service activities (p = 0.040) reported more frequent pain and at the same time confirmed indicators of possible depression, anxiety or sad moods (p = 0.006). Psychological disorders were found in more than half of the patients, a connection between memory impairment and indicators of depression and anxiety (p = 0.006, p = 0.031, p = 0.040) was confirmed. Conclusion: Comprehensive geriatric assessment in a minimized standardized form (interRAI LTCF) is a method designed especially for practical use; it can also be used for research studies. This paper presents the partial results of an ongoing project dealing with the creation of a Czech version of selected parts of the NIC classification in home care. NIC classification is an international classification of interventions and activities that nurses perform, which streamlines and documents the autonomous nurses' activities. An expert group chose nursing interventions and activities (NIC) that were based on the previous diagnosis of 200 clients from a home care agency in Ostrava for assessment. They included interventions and activities for nursing diagnoses with a frequency above 26 % (9 diagnoses). These diagnoses corresponded to 263 interventions with 6 356 of relevant nurses' activities. This set of selected NIC interventions was assessed by academic nursing specialists and an expert group of nurses with regard to the valid Czech legislation and the current state of competencies of nurses. As a result, there is a database of 110 nursing interventions according to the NIC and 2150 activities, which were entered into the electronic documentation for home care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nursing documentation is legislatively defined an obligatory part of health records. It is particularly important in organizations where it is primary providing nursing care by independently working nurses, such as home care. The pivotal phase of the nursing process is nursing diagnostics of patient/client using a standardized terminology. Nursing diagnosis with all the relevant components compiled in electronic record provides a systematic framework for documenting and identifying priority needs and problems of patients. The article presents the preparation and verification of electronic documentation, which will be used in home care for collecting nursing data, for assessment of the patient's health status and his needs and for determination of the nursing diagnoses using the NANDA-Int. Aim: The aim of this pilot survey was to determine the impact and effect timely initiated nutritional intervention on nutritional status, self-sufficiency and laboratory values of albumin in elderly patients with evidence of malnutrition. Methods: Based on the results of tests MNA sample was composed of 56 seniors, which was subsequently confirmed by malnutrition and nutritional care was introduced. Once established nutritional care was assessed: -- the nutritional status of the MNA test, -- develop self-sufficiency (TVS test) and -- blood albumin. For evaluation was used Student's t-test. Statistical tests were evaluated at a significance level = 0,05. Results: Our study confirmed statistically significant differences after the introduction of nutritional care in the assessment of verbal communication (p = 0.024) and in personal hygiene (p = 0.038), sleep and rest (p = 0.013). For the other tests used have been demonstrated important significant relationships between individual measurements. Conclusion: The implemented standard nutritional care can become an important tool for quality of care in nutrition. Standardization of nutritional care has a positive contribution not only for the institution, which should be provided to guarantee the quality of care, but also for clients themselves. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess patients' satisfaction with the nursing care provided in surgical departments, to determine relationships between demographic and clinical characteristics of patients and their satisfaction, and to compare patients' satisfaction according to the medical facilities where they were hospitalized. Methods: A descriptive correlation study. The research sample consisted of 279 patients from the surgical departments of four hospitals in Ostrava and its surroundings. Data were collected in the autumn of 2009 using the standardized instrument Patient Satisfaction Scale (PSS). Results: Patients rated the items, which are grouped into three factors: --technical/rational, --information, --interaction and support on the four-point Likert scale. In all of the hospitals, the patients were most satisfied with the technical aspects of the nursing care, but less satisfied with the information provided to them. Patients valued the professionalism of nurses the most. Only two demographic characteristics influenced patients' satisfaction: --education, and --length of hospitalization. Patients with higher professional education were more satisfied than patients with secondary education. Patients hospitalized for more than a week expressed greater satisfaction in all assessed areas of the questionnaire. There were no significant differences in the evaluation of patients' satisfaction among the hospitals. Conclusion: The results of the study did not demonstrate any statistical differences in patients' satisfaction according to hospital, nor were there demonstrated any significant effects of demographic factors on their satisfaction. The Patient Satisfaction Scale is an example of a quality instrument with proven psychometric parameters, which is suitable for measuring patient satisfaction with nursing care in the Czech environment. Introduction Course “Transcultural Nursing” is a part of the curriculum of undergraduate education (Bachelor) for general nurses' study programmes as well as a part of curriculum of post-graduate master nursing programme. But Transcultural Nursing - as separate subject - is not included in the Intensive Care Specialization course. Focus group participants said they were missing language skills, communication strategies, information about traditions and specifics of different cultures of patients and interactive methods during educational courses. Aim The aim of the study was to determine the educational needs and competencies of Czech nurses in intensive care regarding multicultural care. Material and methods The research method was on-line questionaire prepared by project team (Multicultural Care in European Intensive Care Units project). The questionaire was devided into 3 parts. Participants were contacted by email. 226 questionaires were included into research. Statistical data analysis was used. Results The absolute majority of participants only sometimes seek information on cultural needs when they identify new clients and families. More than half of participants find knowledge of clients and their family's culture and background important for providing nursing care. Almost 90.0% of respondents are convinced that ICU nurse should know more about sociocultural characteristics of different ethnic and religious groups. Conclusions The research maps knowledge and educational needs of ICU nurses in transcultural nursing care. Patients in critical condition and their families from culturally diverse setting have the right to culturally sensitive care. Therefore, nurses in intensive care should have the appropriate knowledge, skills to respect and effectively meet the cultural needs of patients and their families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the assessment of healthcare processes focusing on the quality of care provided, patient satisfaction is an important indicator that healthcare providers may use for future setting of healthcare and preventing adverse events. The study aimed to determine satisfaction with nursing care among hospital inpatients., Material and Methods: The sample comprised 14 023 patients staying in medical and surgical wards of 14 acute care hospitals in the Czech Republic in 2019-2020. Data were collected using the Patient Satisfaction Scale, a standardized tool containing 11 items in 3 subscales. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and correlation analysis (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient)., Results: Overall, patients reported high satisfaction with nursing care (M = 3.57). Patients were most satisfied with how their technical/rational needs were met (M = 3.57); the least satisfaction was identified in the domain of information needs (M = 3.53). Patients who perceived their health as good (47%) or very good (18%) showed high satisfaction scores (M = 3.77 and M = 3.73, respectively). High scores were also achieved for patients with secondary (M = 3.58) and tertiary (M = 3.59) education, those whose admission was planned (M = 3.59) and those staying in large hospitals (M = 3.60). There were no differences in satisfaction with regard to gender (p = 0.755) and the COVID-19 pandemic (p = 0.190)., Conclusions: Patients' satisfaction with care provided is a highly significant parameter of healthcare quality. It is influenced by a number of aspects which, if adequately defined, may aid in improving the quality of care. Aim: The aim of the study was to find differences in perceived reasons for implicit rationing of nursing care across hospital types and units., Design: A descriptive multicentre study., Methods: The study in 14 Czech acute care hospitals was conducted from September 2019 to October 2020. The sample consisted of 8316 nurses working in medical and surgical units. Items for rating the reasons for implicit rationing of nursing care were selected from the MISSCARE Survey. Nurses were asked to rate each item on a scale from 0 (a not significant reason) to 10 (the most significant reason)., Results: The most significant reasons for implicit rationing of nursing care were 'Inadequate number of staff', 'Inadequate number of assistive personnel' and 'Unexpected patient admission and discharge'. Most reasons were rated as more significant by nurses from non-university hospitals. Aims and Objectives: The study aimed to investigate differences in assessing implicit rationing of nursing care by Czech nurses with respect to the type of unit and type of hospital., Background: Implicit rationing of nursing care may differ across different types of hospitals and hospital units., Design: This study used a multicentre cross-sectional study design., Methods: The STROBE checklist for observational cross-sectional studies was followed for reporting of the research study. The sample included 8209 nurses providing direct care to medical and surgical patients in 14 acute care Czech hospitals. The main outcome was implicit rationing of nursing care as measured with a Czech version of the Perceived Implicit Rationing of Nursing Care (PIRNCA) instrument. Data were collected from September 2019 to October 2020., Results: The most frequently rationed nursing care activity was timely response to patient or family request/need, followed by emotional or psychological support and adequate supervision of delegated tasks. More implicitly rationed nursing care was reported in medical units. Statistical differences were found in rating 25 items and the PIRNCA total score. Nurses from middle-sized hospitals reported implicitly rationed care more frequently than those from large hospitals., Conclusion: More rationed care was reported by nurses from medical units and nurses from middle-sized hospitals. Aim: To examine the overall level of self-assessed competence of final-year nursing 'bachelors' degree students in the Czech Republic. In addition, the study aimed at the factors associated with the students' level of competence., Design: A cross-sectional observational study., Methods: Data were collected with the Czech version of the Nurse Competence Scale from 274 final-year nursing students of the bachelor's nursing program. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses., Results: Majority of the students (80.3%) assessed their level of competence as good or very good. The highest level of competence was assessed in the category of 'managing situations' (VAS mean 67.8) and 'work role' (VAS mean 67.2). Previous work experience in healthcare and successful supervisory experience had a positive association with self-assessed competence. Students who completed clinical placement during the COVID-19 pandemic assessed their level of competence as lower than students before the pandemic. Background: Adverse events are indicators of patient safety and quality of care. Adverse events clearly have negative impacts on healthcare system costs. Organizational and unit characteristics are not very often studied in relation to adverse events. The aim of the study was to find the differences in the incidence of adverse events and healthcare-associated infections in hospitalized patients in Czech acute care hospitals according to type of hospital and type of unit. Methods: This cross-sectional multicentre study was conducted in 105 acute care medical and surgical units located in 14 acute care hospitals throughout the Czech Republic. The data on adverse events and healthcare-associated infections were reported monthly by nurse researchers. The data were collected from June 2020 to October 2020. Results: The incidence of healthcare-associated infections, pressure ulcers, and medication errors was significantly lower in large hospitals. Statistically significant differences have been further found between the incidence of pressure ulcers (<0.001), falls without injury (<0.001), and falls with injury (<0.001) in surgical and medical units. More pressure ulcers, falls without injury, and falls with injury have been reported in surgical units. Conclusion: The type of hospital and type of unit affected the incidence of adverse events at acute care hospitals. To reduce adverse events, a systematic adverse event measurement and reporting system should be promoted.

Background and Purpose: Only a limited number of items involved in missed nursing care inventories specifically focused on infection control practices. The study aimed to adapt and evaluate psychometric properties of the Czech and Slovak version of the Infection Control Missed Care survey; and to assess and compare the amount, type,and reasons for missed nursing care in infection prevention and control amongCzech and Slovak nurses., Methods: The convenience sample of 1459 nurses from the Czechand Slovak republic was recruited. Analysis of the nurses' responses to both subscales of the surveys and validation of their data was undertaken using the item response theory (Rasch scaling)., Results: The now-modified Czech version consists only of 20 items measuring the type and frequency of missed care and 11 items focusing on the reasons for missed care. The now modified Slovak version consists of 34 items measuring the type and frequency of missed care and 17 items measuring the reasons for missed care. Reliability estimates with the removal of unreliable items showed acceptable reliability estimates for both sub-scales of the instrument., Conclusions: With modification to the two subscales used in the survey (removal of poorly fitting items) it should be reliable, and the resulting data could be used for further investigation such as factor analysis or modelling. Background: Levels of fear have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The absence of a safe and effective vaccine for mass-vaccination deteriorates this situation, which has a significant impact on mental health. This study aimed to assess the feelings of fear among nurses and nursing students in five European countries., Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in five European countries (Greece, Albania, Cyprus, Spain, and Kosovo) before the start of mass vaccination in Europe. Data collection was conducted in December 2020-January 2021 using an online questionnaire for nursing students and professional nurses. Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) was used for measuring levels of fear. IBM SPSS version 21.0 was used for statistical analysis., Results: The study population included 1135 nurses and 1920 nursing students from Kosovo ( n = 1085), Spain ( n = 663), Greece ( n = 534), Albania ( n = 529), and Cyprus ( n = 244). According to multivariable analysis, females (OR = 2.53, 95% CI = 1.89-3.15), married (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.24-1.48), nurses (OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.28-1.45) and those with a chronic disease (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.11-1.62) were more fearful of COVID-19., Conclusions: It is important to decrease fear in the population of nurses who are at the frontlines of the pandemic. The provision of appropriate education and training activities for nurses and students to manage their stress levels is of high importance. Future studies should focus on levels of fear after the administration of several safe and effective vaccines worldwide.

The aim of the study is the analysis of educational needs of European intensive care nurses (ICNs) with regard to multicultural care. A mixed-method multinational study was performed among 591 ICNs coming from 15 European countries. An online survey was utilised with three research tools: participants' sociodemographic details, Healthcare Provider Cultural Competence Instrument, and a tool to assess the educational needs of ICU nurses with respect to multicultural care. The highest mean values in self-assessment of preparation of ICU nurses to provide multicultural nursing care and their educational needs in this regard were detected in the case of nurses coming from Southern Europe (M = 4.09; SD = 0.43). With higher age, nurses recorded higher educational needs in the scope of multicultural care ( r = 0.138; p = 0.001). In addition, speaking other languages significantly correlated with higher educational needs related to care of patients coming from different cultures (Z = -4.346; p < 0.001) as well as previous education on multicultural nursing care (Z = -2.530; p = 0.011). Experiences of difficult situations when caring for culturally diverse patients in ICU were classified into categories: 'treatment procedures and general nursing care', 'family visiting', 'gender issues', 'communication challenges', and 'consequences of difficult experiences'. The educational needs of intensive care nurses in caring for culturally diverse patients are closely related to experiencing difficult situations when working with such patients and their families.

Objectives: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought commercial, social, and economic consequences in every country that has experienced substantial SARS-CoV-2 infection rates. The complete change in the environment that took place due to the outbreak of the pandemic can lead to stressful situations, especially among healthcare personnel., Material and Methods: The research were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic between the 27 March 2020 and the 20 April 2020. The research included 1984 employees of emergency medical systems in seven European countries. An internet-based questionnaire format was adopted for the study (ΩMc-Donald > 0.7)., Results: The highest level of stress was experienced by personnel in the United Kingdom M = 4.03, and the lowest by Norwegian employees M = 2.89. High levels of stress were also experienced by nurses from Spain and Poland. Women actively working in the healthcare system during the pandemic experienced higher stress levels than men., Conclusions: Women working in European emergency medical systems are more vulnerable to work-related stress, while carrying out emergency medical procedures during the pandemic. Differences in the level of stress experienced while carrying out duties in pre-hospital conditions were only found among Spanish emergency medical system personnel.

Background: Experiencing the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, high vaccination coverage by a safe and effective vaccine globally would be a great achievement. Acceptance of vaccination by nursing students is an important issue as they play a decisive role as future professionals in educating patients, counselling, and guiding them to the right clinical decision., Objectives: To explore the intention of nursing students to get vaccinated for SARS-CoV-2 infection and the factors acting either as motivators or as barriers towards vaccination., Design: A multicenter cross-sectional design., Participants: In total 2249 undergraduate nursing students participated., Methods: The study was conducted in 7 universities in participating countries (Greece, Albania, Cyprus, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, and Kosovo) through a web survey. Data was collected during December 2020-January 2021 in all countries., Results: Forty three point 8% of students agreed to accept a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, while the acceptance was higher among Italian students. The factors for intention to get vaccinated were male gender (p = 0.008), no working experience in healthcare facilities during the pandemic (p = 0.001), vaccination for influenza in 2019 and 2020 (p < 0.001), trust in doctors (p < 0.001), governments and experts (p = 0.012), high level of knowledge (p < 0.001) and fear of COVID-19 (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Understanding of factors that influence students' decision to accept COVID-19 vaccination could increase the acceptance rate contributing to a management of the pandemic., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The main aims of the study were to explore the frequency of missed nursing care (MNC) among Czech hospital nurses, and to find the relationship between nurse's job satisfaction and MNC., Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 513 nurses from 9 hospitals in the Czech Republic. Data were collected in January-August 2019 using the standardized MISSCARE Survey questionnaire, complemented with items assessing nurse's job satisfaction and demographic data., Results: The most frequently missed nursing activities were patient ambulation and emotional support to the patient and/or family. The surveyed nurses were most satisfied with being a nurse and least satisfied with the level of teamwork on their unit. The strongest correlation was found between satisfaction with the current position and satisfaction with being a nurse; there was a negative correlation between satisfaction with the current position and the overall level of MNC. There was a significant trend between the rating of satisfaction with the current position and MNC., Conclusions: Nurse's job satisfaction is associated with the level of nursing care provided; more missed care means more dissatisfaction among nurses. Aims and Objectives: To investigate hospital, unit and staff variables as the correlates of missed nursing care (MNC) in Czech hospitals., Background: There is a considerable variability in patterns of MNC across different hospital, unit and staff characteristics., Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The STROBE guidelines for reporting observational studies were followed for reporting of the research study., Methods: A sample of 513 nurses working in nine acute care hospitals was recruited. MNC activities were measured with the MISSCARE Survey. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and univariate logistic regression., Results: Type of unit was confirmed as a significant predictor of MNC. Staff characteristics (nurses' work position, level of education and perceived adequacy of unit staff) and hospital variables did not contribute significantly to MNC., Conclusions: The study replicated the patterns of MNC across different conceptual approaches. Aim: The main aim of the research was to describe and compare unfinished nursing care in selected European countries., Background: The high prevalence of unfinished nursing care reported in recently published studies, as well as its connection to negative effects on nurse and patient outcomes, has made unfinished care an important phenomenon and a quality indicator for nursing activities., Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was undertaken. Unfinished nursing care was measured using the Perceived Implicit Rationing of Nursing Care questionnaire (PIRNCA). The sample included 1,353 nurses from four European countries (Croatia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia)., Results: The percentage of nurses leaving one or more nursing activities unfinished ranged from 95.2% (Slovakia) to 97.8% (Czech Republic). Mean item scores on the 31 items of the PIRNCA in the total sample ranged from 1.13 to 1.92. Unfinished care was significantly associated with the type of hospital and quality of care., Conclusion: The research results confirmed the prevalence of unfinished nursing care in the countries surveyed., Implications for Nursing Management: The results are a useful tool for enabling nurse managers to look deeper into nurse staffing and other organizational issues that may influence patient safety and quality of care., (© 2019 The Authors. Aim: The aim was to analyze selected studies on rationed nursing care as one of the indicators that influence the occurrence of medication errors., Methods: A descriptive review study. Articles and studies were searched in the following selected electronic databases: EBSCO (Academic Search Ultimate, Academic Search Complete), CINAHL Plus with Full Text, MEDLINE Complete, ScienceDirect and Central & Eastern European Academic Source. The search for relevant sources was based on the following English keywords: unfinished care, omitted care, rationing care, missed care, nursing care, medication errors., Results: Total of 86 contributions found. After duplicit and irrelevant publications were the analysis comprised 8 primary studies and 2 systematic reviews. The studies were concerned with rationed or otherwise defined non-standard nursing care not merely related to medication errors. Each study described selected activities most frequently omitted by nurses with respect to medication: assessment of drug efficacy, medication errors, administration of incorrect drugs or doses, wrong time of administration, high-risk drug protocols and adhering to rules with each administration. The most frequently reported factor influencing the occurrence of missed care was understaffing and the related number of patients per nurse, resulting in a lack of time for selected patient activities., Conclusion: Despite difference in methods, all studies consistently claimed that rationed, unfinished, missed or omitted nursing care has or may have a negative impact on both patients and nurses. Some of the recommendations were increasing the number of nurses, improving team collaboration and work organization including setting systemic and preventive measures.

The professional practice environment is a factor that can have a significant impact on missed nursing care. The study aimed to find a relationship between nurses' perceptions of their professional practice environment and missed nursing care and job satisfaction. An additional aim was to find differences in nurses' perceived rating of the professional practice environment according to hospital location and job position. A descriptive correlational study was performed. The sample included 513 general and practical nurses providing direct care in nine Czech hospitals. The Revised Professional Practice Environment scale and the Missed Nursing Care (MISSCARE) survey were used to collect data. The professional practice environment was most correlated with satisfaction with the current position (0.4879). The overall score of missed care correlated most strongly with the subscale "staff relationships" (-0.2774). Statistically significant differences in the rating of two subscales, "control over practice" and "cultural sensitivity", were found between nurses from hospitals in district capitals and those from hospitals in smaller cities. Statistically significant differences in the rating of the "leadership and autonomy in clinical practice" and "teamwork" subscales were found between general nurses and practical nurses. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Czech versions of the Quality of Life in Late-Stage Dementia (QUALID) and the Cognitively Impaired Life Quality (CILQ) scales for use in the palliative care setting in terminally ill patients with cognitive impairment., Methods: The sample comprised 306 cognitively impaired inpatients with advanced cancer and non-cancer conditions. In this cross-sectional study, two Quality of Life (QoL) measurements were performed at baseline and after five days. The dimensionality of the QUALID and CILQ scales was evaluated using a principal component analysis with Varimax rotation. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha; inter-rater reliability was evaluated with Kappa index. Test-retest stability was calculated using the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) comparing scores from baseline and 3-5 days post-baseline. The construct validity of the QUALID and CILQ scale was established by Spearman's correlation coefficients with the Symptom Management at the End-of-Life in Dementia (SM-EOLD)., Results: Both scales were shown to have adequate validity and reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.812 for QUALID, and α = 0.73 for CILQ), good inter-rater agreement (QUALID: κ = 0.760; CILQ: κ = 0.801) as well as test-retest reliability (QUALID: ICC = 0.847; CILQ: ICC = 0.925)., Conclusion: The Czech versions of the QUALID and CILQ scales may be recommended for use in the Czech Republic in the area of palliative care.

Aims and Objectives: To identify the quality of life of patients with diabetic foot ulcers in the Visegrad countries., Background: The diabetics with foot ulcers are principally evaluated on the basis of physical parameters, but this does not always reveal much about the patient's experience of life with ulceration., Design: The cross-sectional study., Methods: The standardised generic questionnaire World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF was used. The sample was made up of 525 participants and the calculations were performed using the IBM spss statistical program., Results: The significant negative correlations between demographic data such as age, duration of diabetes mellitus, duration of diabetic ulceration treatment and a lower level of quality of life were found across the sample. The statistically significant differences according to clinical characteristics such as Wagner classification, frequency of foot ulcers, present peripheral vascular disease and pain in terms of quality of life were also revealed. Significant differences of quality of life among Visegrad countries were revealed: Hungary's participants had a worse quality of life than others, while Slovak participants expressed lower satisfaction with their health than Czech., Conclusions: Socio-demographic factors and clinical characteristics influence the quality of life of patients with diabetic foot ulcer. Significant differences between patients of Visegrad countries were found in all domains of quality of life: physical, psychological, social and environmental., Relevance to Clinical Practice: The quality of life of patients with diabetic foot ulcer reflects the conditions and healthcare system in each of the Visegrad countries. We have to respect socio-demographic factors and clinical characteristics in nursing care. Background: Currently, there are no studies aimed at evaluating the quality of life (QoL) of patients with end-stage disease during hospitalization and the factors that influence it., Aim: The aim of the research was to identify predictors of change in the QoL of patients hospitalized due to advanced stage of disease., Methods: The sample consisted of 140 patients with end-stage disease who were hospitalized on this account. For evaluation of QoL, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) was used. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and Karnofsky Performance Status questionnaires were used for the assessment of mental and functional status. For the evaluation of predictors of negative change in QoL, a logistic regression analysis was used., Results: During hospitalization, there was a significant deterioration in the scores given for all domains of the functional QLQ-C30 scale, but not the symptomatic scale. Predictors of change in overall QoL detected were marital status, improved functional status, and depression detected on admission to hospital. Gender and age were found to be protective factors against deterioration in overall QoL., Conclusion: Sociodemographic characteristics and mental and functional status may be associated with change in QoL of patients with end-stage disease during hospitalization.

Background: The Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs (EBP-B) and Evidence-Based Practice Implementation (EBP-I) scales are psychometrically sound instruments that were used, within an educational setting, to systematically study students' beliefs about and their implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). Czech and Slovak versions of these instruments were developed and evaluated using a sample population of nursing students., Purpose: The purpose of the study was to test the psychometric properties of the Czech and Slovak versions of the EBP-B and EBP-I scales., Methods: Psychometric properties were evaluated using a sample of undergraduate and graduate (nearly graduated) nursing students (n = 223) completing EBP courses. To test psychometric properties of the questionnaire, its reliability and validity were explored. Cronbach´s alpha was computed to evaluate internal structure and internal consistency., Results: The Slovak versions of both the EBP-B and the EBP-I scale have good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: .82 and .94, respectively). Similarly, the Czech versions of the EBP-B and the EBP-I scales both have good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: .85 and .89, respectively)., Linking Evidence to Action: The results of psychometric analysis of the Czech and Slovak versions of the EBP-B and the EBP-I scales are consistent with the results of the original study and indicate that the Czech and Slovak versions have the potential to be valid, reliable, and sensitive instruments for measuring an individual's beliefs about the value of EBP and their ability to implement it. Both instruments can be used to assess changes in nurses´ beliefs about EBP over time as well as the effectiveness of strategies aimed at promoting the use of evidence in practice., (© 2016 Sigma Theta Tau International.)

Purpose: The study aimed at assessing the presence of anxiety and depression in cancer inpatients receiving palliative care at an oncology department using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and determining whether anxiety and depression contribute to a lower quality of life controlled for pain and illness severity., Method: This cross-sectional study comprised 225 advanced cancer inpatients (a mean age of 65.1 years). Data were collected with the HADS, EORTC QLQ-C30 and Karnofsky Performance Status scale., Results: Anxiety (HADS-a ≥8) was found in 33.9% and depression (HADS-d ≥8) in 47.6% of patients. Higher anxiety scores were observed in patients living with a partner (p = 0.042) and non-religious patients (p = 0.045). Correlations were found between anxiety, depression and all quality of life dimensions (r = 0.31-0.63). Multiple regression analysis showed that anxiety and depression contribute to lower physical and emotional functioning. Patients with anxiety (HADS-a ≥8) and depression (HADS-d ≥8) reported a lower total quality of life (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Management of anxiety and depression in cancer patients receiving palliative care may contribute to improvement in certain quality of life dimensions., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: The main purpose of the study was to validate the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis acute pain in the Czech Republic and Slovakia., Methods: This is a descriptive study. The validation process involved was based on Fehring's diagnostic content validity model., Findings: Four defining characteristics were classified as major by Slovak nurses and eight defining characteristics were classified as major by Czech nurses., Conclusion: Validation of the nursing diagnosis acute pain in the Czech and Slovak sociocultural context has shown that nurses prioritize characteristics that are behavioral in nature as well as patients' verbal reports of pain., Practice Implications: Verbal reports of pain and behavioral indicators are important for arriving at the nursing diagnosis acute pain., (© 2014 NANDA International, Inc.)

Purpose: The aim of the study was to clinically validate the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis caregiver role strain in the Czech Republic., Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The patient-focused clinical diagnostic validity model was used for clinical validation., Findings: Only two major defining characteristics were identified for caregiver role strain in a sample of 225 caregivers., Conclusion: The study has identified the most frequently present defining characteristics related to the nursing diagnosis caregiver role strain in a caregiver population in the Czech Republic caring for their loved ones in home settings., Implications for Nursing Practice: It is important that defining characteristics aid diagnosis and direct nursing interventions., (© 2014 NANDA International.)
