Soil management is known to have significant effects on soil structure. Especially, grassland renovation and associated ploughing may have destructive influence on structure, but on the other hand conversion of arable land to grassland can improve pore structure and soil functions. In crop rotations including perennial grasses, soil structure is affected by these counteracting processes. The purpose of this work was to study and quantify the impacts of varying soil management practices on the structure of boreal arable heavy clay soils. We studied intact topsoil samples collected from two sites by X-ray computed microtomography, image analysis, image-based pore-scale flow simulations, and water retention measurements. At both sites, one area under long-term (at least 30-year-old) grassland was compared with adjacent field area with contrasting managements:Site 1: Cereal production under no-till management for 13 years prior to sampling. Site 2: Crop rotation of a livestock farm with cereals and perennial grasses, tillage by ploughing. At the sampling time this field area had been two years under grass after preceding 3-year cereal period. Both imaging and water retention showed statistically and practically significant differences in the soil macropore structure at site 1 such that porosity of the long-term grassland was clearly higher that that under cereal production. On the contrary, at site 2, only minor differences between managements were observed. Our results show that the soil management practices affect the macropore structure of boreal arable clay soil and that no-till and crop-rotation managements had clearly different effects on soil structure as compared to long-term grasslands.

Production of applicable and homogeneous biochar for soil amendment purposes would benefit from knowledge on how feedstock heterogeneity impacts key biochar pore properties and how the properties are transformed due to pyrolysis. This study aimed (1) to quantify how clonal differences and within-tree heterogeneity of a hybrid aspen feedstock (wood) impact biochar pore properties and (2) to estimate how pore properties of non-pyrolysed wood materials are transformed when pyrolysed into biochar. The study was conducted by collecting samples from a hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × Populus tremuloides Michx.) clonal field trial. Key pore properties of non-pyrolysed and pyrolysed wood samples were quantified with 3D X-ray imaging and quantitative image analyses. The results demonstrated how pyrolysis shifted distinctively bi-modal pore size distributions of the wood samples towards smaller pore size regions. The bi-modal wood tissue structure controlled the pore structure also in the biochars. Due to decreasing cell wall thicknesses, the pyrolysis increased the porosity of the materials. While the thermal process homogenized differences in the wall thicknesses, the thicknesses of the feedstock were also shown to control the resulting thicknesses in the biochars. Mechanisms of biochar pore property formation can be considered important when designing applicable biochars for a chosen purpose. Clonal differences and within-tree heterogeneity had a direct impact only on the wall thicknesses and the pore diameters of vessels. These impacts can be of interest when planning feedstock utilization in biochar production. However, the results suggest that relatively homogeneous biochar can be produced from hybrid aspen feedstocks.

Amending growing media with biochar has the potential to sequester carbon and enhance the properties of the receiving substance. However, knowledge of the mechanisms of how biochar amends the physical properties of the material is incomplete. By combining 3D image analysis and more conventional methods, this study aimed to (1) characterise the pore structure properties of three different plant-based biochars and (2) quantify their impact on Sphagnum moss growing media physical properties. The 3D imaging showed that irrespective of the feedstock, the majority (0.80–0.94 m3 m−3) of the biochar pore volume resided in pores with diameters 2–11 μm. Biochar pore properties shared similarities due to the structure of plant tissue. The application of biochar increased the water retention of the growing media by a maximum increase of 0.06 m3 m−3 in the pore diameter range 1–8 μm. This is relevant for plant-available water and microbiological activity, which indicates the usability of the biochar amendments. From methodological point of view, the benefits of combining 3D imaging with conventional measurements and impacts of the water table continuum discontinuity between the biochar and the surrounding growing media were demonstrated. The design of biochar for optimal water retention would benefit from further studies quantifying pore structure characteristics of biochar produced from a wide range of feedstocks.

Better monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of the amount, additionality and persistence of the sequestered soil carbon is needed to understand the best carbon farming practices for different soils and climate conditions, as well as their actual climate benefits or cost-efficiency in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents our Field Observatory Network (FiON) of researchers, farmers, companies and other stakeholders developing carbon farming practices. FiON has established a unified methodology towards monitoring and forecasting agricultural carbon sequestration by combining offline and near real-time field measurements, weather data, satellite imagery, modeling and computing networks. FiON’s first phase consists of two intensive research sites and 20 voluntary pilot farms testing carbon farming practices in Finland. To disseminate the data, FiON built a web-based dashboard called Field Observatory (v1.0, fieldobservatory.org). Field Observatory is designed as an online service for near real-time model-data synthesis, forecasting and decision support for the farmers who are able to monitor the effects of carbon farming practices. The most advanced features of the Field Observatory are visible on the Qvidja site which acts as a prototype for the most recent implementations. Overall, FiON aims to create new knowledge on agricultural soil carbon sequestration and effects of carbon farming practices, and provide an MRV tool for decision-support.

Novel bioeconomic approaches call for increasingly faster production of lignocellulosic biomass and its bettertailored use for higher added value. The high-yield capacity and structural properties of willows (Salix spp.) suggest their excellent potential for the production of designed biochar for use in agronomic, electronic and technical applications. All these applications rely on the internal pore structure of biochar. However, we lack an in-depth quantitative understanding of the interlinkages between the feedstock properties and the physical quality of the biochar produced. We studied quantitatively how the clonal and within-plant properties of five different willow clones (hybrids of Salix schwerinii E.L. Wolf) affected the micrometre-scale pore properties of the produced biochars (pyrolyzed at + 462 ?C). The porosity and pore size distribution were analysed before and after slow pyrolysis by X-ray microtomography and image analysis. We also studied the potential of conventional low-cost fibre analysis techniques to be used to predict biochar pore properties directly from fresh feedstock. The total porosity (0.55?0.62) and the pore size distribution of willow wood and derived biochars varied between clones. Approximately two-thirds of the biochar total porosity was associated with pores formed by wood fibres. Pyrolysis levelled off the structural variation detected between and within the clones. Pyrolysis-induced shrinkage reduced the pore sizes and narrowed the pore size distribution. The results suggest that conventional fibre analysis techniques could be utilized to predict biochar homogeneity. Short rotation coppice willows are suitable feedstock to produce homogenous biochar precursor for production of bio-based carbon materials to be used in high value-added technical applications. The structural homogeneity of the feedstock and produced biochar can be enhanced by selecting proper harvesting strategy and clones used in plantations. From the industrial perspective, comprehensive understanding of feedstock properties helps to control quality of the produced biochar.

Reclamation of peat bogs for agriculture changes the physical and chemical characteristics of the peat matrix, for example, drainage and tillage accelerate decomposition, altering peat porosity, pore size distribution, and hydraulic properties. This study investigated changes in near‐saturated hydraulic conductivity over time after drainage of peat soil for agricultural use by conducting tension infiltrometer measurements in a mire that has been gradually drained and reclaimed for agriculture during the past 80 years (with fields drained 2, 12, 40, and 80 years before the measurements). At pore water pressure closest to saturation (pressure head −1 cm), hydraulic conductivity in the newest field was approximately nine times larger than that in the oldest field, and a decreasing trend with field age was observed. A similar (but weaker) trend was observed with −3 cm pressure head (approximately four times larger in the newest field in comparison to the oldest), but at −6 cm head, there were no significant differences. These results indicate that peat degradation reduces the amount of millimetre‐sized pores in particular. They also indicate that changes in peat macroporosity continue for several decades before a new steady state is reached.

Feasibility of pyrolysing wastewater sludge for char and energy production is dependent on the usability of the produced sludge char. This study aimed to produce mechanistic information of char impacts on amended porous media by determining (1) pore structure of sludge chars with 3D image analyses and (2) their influence on water retention and shrinkage properties of three contrasting soils. The pore structure of the chars consisted of crevices and large spheres. Their water retention impacts were minor, even though the low-porous char slightly increased porosity in the amended materials in various pore-size ranges. The dominating, though small, impacts were the increase in easily drainable interpores and decrease in smallest pore sizes relevant for plant available water. The char impacts were more visible in fine-than coarse-textured soils. The chars also significantly reduced shrinkage in clay soils. The results were insensitive to sludge feedstock or char particle size. publishedVersion

Short-term agronomic and environmental benefits are fundamental factors in encouraging farmers to use biochar on a broad scale. The short-term impacts of forest residue biochar (BC) on the productivity and carbon (C) storage of arable boreal clay soil were studied in a field experiment. In addition, rain simulations and aggregate stability tests were carried out to investigate the potential of BC to reduce nutrient export to surface waters. A BC addition of 30 t ha−1 increased soil test phosphorus and decreased bulk density in the surface soil but did not significantly change pH or water retention properties, and most importantly, did not increase the yield. There were no changes in the bacterial or fungal communities, or biomasses. Soil basal respiration was higher in BC-amended plots in the spring, but no differences in respiration rates were detected in the fall two years after the application. Rain simulation experiments did not support the use of BC in reducing erosion or the export of nutrients from the field. Of the C added, on average 80% was discovered in the 0–45 cm soil layer one year after the application. Amendment of boreal clay soil with a high rate of BC characterized by a moderately alkaline pH, low surface functionalities, and a recalcitrant nature, did not induce such positive impacts that would unambiguously motivate farmers to invest in BC. We describe three distinct approaches to visualization for multiscale materials modelling research. These have been developed with the framework of the SimPhoNy FP7 EU-project, and complement each other in their requirements and possibilities. All have been integrated via wrappers to one or more of the simulation approaches within the SimPhoNy project. In this manuscript we describe and contrast their features. Together they cover visualization needs from electronic to macroscopic scales and are suited to simulations made on personal computers, workstations or advanced High Performance parallel computers. Examples as well as recommendations for future calculations are presented.

The lattice Boltzmann method is increasingly utilized in the simulation of flow-induced wall shear stress needed in various applications. In image-based flow simulations, the simulation geometry is usually based on a three-dimensional reconstruction of the true structure of the pore space obtained, for example, by X-ray tomography. The geometry is then given in a voxel-based representation, which complicates an accurate determination of the surface-normal vectors that are necessary in the computation of the wall shear stress. To avoid this problem, we introduce here a method for the determination of surface-normal vectors directly from a greyscale image instead of its segmented binary image version. The proposed method is fast and automatic, and it can be used for an arbitrary pore space geometry provided in a greyscale form by any imaging modality. We show that this method can produce accurate surface-normal vectors even for binary images and that their accuracy is further increased when the original greyscale images are used instead. We compute wall shear stresses for generated benchmark geometries and then demonstrate the utility of the method for soil samples with ‘random’ pores imaged by X-ray tomography.

Recently published RUSLE2015 erosion model for Europe allows easy and effective production of erosion maps with GIS. However, RUSLE2015 can be considered scientifically controversial because the assessments have not been based on model simulation or field survey. In this work, we evaluated and adjusted the model using the best available data from six long-term experimental fields in Finland. The model performance was systematically better after some optimizations on C factor were made and the obtained results were mostly realistic. In boreal conditions grass and no-till tillage practices may have lesser protective influence on erosion than expected in RUSLE2015. The results were controversial for more exposed soil treatments. This might be explained by freezing-thawing and snowmelt erosion, which affect more on bare soil. The splash-dominated soil detachment on Finnish soils is rather low and thus the R-factor cannot fully explain the detachment of particles especially in clayey soils. More research is needed to strengthen the reliability of R and C factors.

The MPI intercommunication framework was used for coupling of two lattice-Boltzmann solvers with suspended particles, which model advection and diffusion respectively of these particles in a carrier fluid. Simulation domain was divided into two parts, one with advection and diffusion, and the other with diffusion only (no macroscopic flow). Particles were exchanged between these domains at their common boundary by a direct process to process communication. By analysing weak and strong scaling, it was shown that the linear scaling characteristics of the lattice-Boltzmann solvers were not compromised by their coupling.

Soil hydraulic properties play an important role in determining the level of crop productivity and the extent of environmental loading. Consequently, measurement of near-saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (K(h)) by tension infiltrometer (TI) is an interesting technique. To provide reference values for near-saturated K(h) in arable mineral topsoils of Finland and to investigate variability in these values caused by tillage, antecedent soil moisture content and earthworm burrows, field measurements were conducted in south-western and central-eastern Finland using the TI technique, at supply pressure head –6, –3, and –1 cm. The range of near-saturated K(h) values obtained was 0.02–12.6 mm h-1 at –6 cm, 0.30–85.9 mm h-1 at –3 cm, and 2.55–250 mm h-1 at –1 cm. At –6 cm pressure head, clay soils tended to show lower values than coarser-structured soils, but the order was reversed at –1 cm. The spatial variation in near-saturated K(h) was moderate and was exceeded by the temporal variation.

Pyrolysis is an option for enhancing the sustainable management of broiler manure surpluses by producing a concentrated, hygienic char product with a fertilizer and soil conditioner value. In this study, the impacts of pyrolysis conducted at 350, 400 and 450 °C on total nutrient and harmful element concentrations in biochars derived from peat-bedded broiler manure were examined. Emphasis was placed on the availability of phosphorus (P). In addition, the pore structures of these biochars were explored using X-ray microtomography and image analysis. During pyrolysis, 35–50%, 40–55% and 35–45% of the original carbon, nitrogen and sulfur contents, respectively, of the feedstock biomass were lost as volatiles. Mineral elements, including P, were concentrated in the biochar. Although water-extractable P was found to be converted to less labile forms due to charring, the concentration effect and notable increase in sodium bicarbonate-extractable P rendered broiler manure biochars richer in total labile P in comparison with feedstock manure (7.1, 10.0, 11.1 and 14.8 g labile P kg−1 in feedstock and biochars produced at 350, 400 and 450 °C, respectively). The pore volume of the micrometer-scale porosity of the broiler manure biochar was comparable to that found earlier in wood-based biochars. In comparison with wood-based biochars, the pore structure of broiler manure biochars was more versatile, and the pore size distribution was wider. Consequently, part of the porosity was too large to store plant-available water, which may reduce the potential of broiler manure biochars to improve soil water storage capacity.

Erosion and colloidal particle loss from cultivated clay soils in cool humid climate pose a risk to soil productivity and surface water quality. To enhance soil management practices that effectively reduce clay soil erosion, we need to understand the interrelations between the key variables on which clay soil aggregate structure depend. The objective of our study was to quantify the relative importance of OC content, land use and soil wetness, for the aggregate stability of post-glacial clay soils. We estimated the potential effect of five different land uses (cereal cropping with variable tillage and crop rotation, permanent grassland and forest as a control) on clay soil aggregate stability as measured by the percentage of water-stable aggregates (WSA% of 2–5 mm fraction) and colloid detachment (turbidity, NTU%), after controlling for the differences in organic carbon content (OC%) and Clay%/OC% ratio between the land uses through covariance analysis. Further, we assessed how aggregate structure in differently managed soils with different OC% tolerates the varying moisture conditions. The higher OC% was reflected in all cultivated soils by increased aggregate stability, implying that OC inputs may positively affect soil structure even in low additions. When compared at equal OC%, the mean WSA% was lower in cereal cropping than in soils under forest or permanent grass, clearly showing the negative effect of tillage frequency on the aggregate stability. The detachment of colloidal particles from aggregates was higher in soils with a high Clay%/OC% ratio, and thus the Clay%/OC% ratio may offer an easily measurable indicator for the risk of clay dispersion, and thereby soil erosion and the export of particle-bound nutrients from cultivated fields. When compared at an equal Clay%/OC% ratio, colloid detachment from aggregates representing cereal fields was two- to threefold as compared to permanent grassland. Cultivated soils with less than 4–6% OC were very sensitive to waterlogging, highlighting the role of proper drainage in erosion control. The results demonstrate that an increase in OC content and proper drainage would help to improve the aggregate stability of cultivated clay soils in cool humid climate, but the effective improvement of the present situation would require drastically reduced soil disturbances for areas with the highest erosion risk.

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are widely used in the modeling of surface hydrology, which typically includes the determination of flow directions and flow accumulation. The use of high-resolution DEMs increases the accuracy of flow accumulation computation, but as a drawback, the computational time may become excessively long if large areas are analyzed. In this paper we investigate the use of graphical processing units (GPUs) for efficient flow accumulation calculations. We present two new parallel flow accumulation algorithms based on dependency transfer and topological sorting and compare them to previously published flow transfer and indegree-based algorithms. We benchmark the GPU implementations against industry standards, ArcGIS and SAGA. With the flow-transfer D8 flow routing model and binary input data, a speed up of 19 is achieved compared to ArcGIS and 15 compared to SAGA. We show that on GPUs the topological sort-based flow accumulation algorithm leads on average to a speedup by a factor of 7 over the flow-transfer algorithm. Thus a total speed up of the order of 100 is achieved. We test the algorithms by applying them to the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) erosion model. For this purpose we present parallel versions of the slope, LS factor and RUSLE algorithms and show that the RUSLE erosion results for an area of 12km x 24km containing 72 million cells can be calculated in less than a second. Since flow accumulation is needed in many hydrological models, the developed algorithms may find use in many other applications than RUSLE modeling. The algorithm based on topological sorting is particularly promising for dynamic hydrological models where flow accumulations are repeatedly computed over an unchanged DEM. We present two new parallel algorithms for flow accumulation calculations on DEMs.The new algorithms are based on dependency transfer and topological sort.We demonstrate the benefit(s) of the topological sort on GPU.We benchmark our GPU implementation against industry standard ArcGIS and Saga.Speed-ups up to 100x can be achieved on GPUs.

Soil tillage is an anthropogenic factor affecting hydrological processes in agricultural fields. To demonstrate a novel method for increasing mechanistic understanding of the tillage impacts, we combined a process-based three-dimensional (3D) hydrological model with terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) data. This study aimed to (1) exploit high-resolution TLS data to estimate soil surface depression storage (SSDS) and roughness after different soil tillage operations (ploughing, harrowing vs direct drilling) on a heavy clay soil, (2) combine the estimates of SSDS and roughness with a 3D hydrological model to demonstrate the potential of the method in analyzing hydrological impacts of tillage, and (3) evaluate the value and uncertainties in coupling spatial microtopographical data and process-based modeling. The SSDS values showed low mean (0.3–2.9 mm) and rare high values (>5 mm) with clearly the highest variation of SSDS and roughness values in the ploughed conditions. These tillage impacts were reflected in the amounts of surface layer runoff (max. increase 23% due to the SSDS and roughness changes) and drain discharge (max. decrease 8%). The impact on other water balance components was negligible, and factors such as drainage methods and terrain slope were shown to have more control on the water balance. The tillage impacts had also a clear effect on peak surface runoff values. Most (99%) of the hydrological changes were caused by the SSDS variation whereas the roughness had a minor role. The simulations showed that tillage-induced long-term changes on soil hydraulic properties (such as conductivity and macroporosity), which were not detected by the TLS data, can have a high impact on surface layer runoff generation, as these tillage-impacts increased runoff by 25%. While the simulations showed how the various hydrological impacts of tillage can be discerned, a more comprehensive assessment would require more data derived from several sites and tillage conditions.

Addition of biochar into a soil changes its water retention properties by modifying soil textural and structural properties. In addition, internal micrometer-scale porosity that is able to directly store readily plant available water affects soil water retention properties. This study shows how precise knowledge of the internal micrometer-scale pore size distribution of biochar can deepen the understanding of the biochar-water interactions in soils. The micrometer-scale porosity of willow biochar was quantitatively and qualitatively characterized using X-ray tomography, 3D image analysis and Helium ion microscopy. The effect of biochar application on clay soil water retention was studied by conventional water retention curve approach. The results indicate that the internal pores of biochar, with sizes of at 50 and 10 μm (equivalent pore diameter), increased soil porosity and the amount of readily plant available water. After biochar addition, changes in soil porosity were detected at pore size regimes 5–10 and 25 μm, i.e. biochar pore sizes multiplied by factor 0.5. The detected pore size distribution of biochar does not predict directly (1:1 compatibility) the changes observed in the soil moisture characteristics. It is likely that biochar chemistry and pore morphology affect biochar-water interactions via e.g. surface roughness and contact angle. In addition, biochar induced changes in soil structure and texture affected soil moisture characteristics. However, the approach presented is an attractive pathway to more generalized understanding on how and why biochar internal porosity affects soil moisture characteristics. publishedVersion

Biochar pore space consists of porosity of multiple length scales. In direct water holding applications like water storage for plant water uptake, the main interest is in micrometre-range porosity since these pores are able to store water that is easily available for plants. Gas adsorption measurements which are commonly used to characterize the physical pore structure of biochars are not able to quantify this pore-size range. While pyrogenetic porosity (i.e. pores formed during pyrolysis process) tends to increase with elevated process temperature, it is uncertain whether this change affects the pore space capable to store plant available water. In this study, we characterized biochar porosity with x-ray tomography which provides quantitative information on the micrometer-range porosity. We imaged willow dried at 60 $^\circ$C and biochar samples pyrolysed in three different temperatures (peak temperatures 308, 384, 489 $^\circ$C, heating rate 2 $^\circ$C min$^{-1}$). Samples were carefully prepared and traced through the experiments, which allowed investigation of porosity development in micrometre size range. Pore space was quantified with image analysis of x-ray tomography images and, in addition, nanoscale porosity was examined with helium ion microscopy. The image analysis results show that initial pore structure of the raw material determines the properties of micrometre-range porosity in the studied temperature range. Thus, considering the pore-size regime relevant to the storage of plant available water, pyrolysis temperature in the studied range does not provide means to optimize the biochar structure. However, these findings do not rule out that process temperature may affect the water retention properties of biochars by modifying the chemical properties of the pore surfaces., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We studied the soil community and habitat consequences of introducing a deep-burrowing, sedentary life-style earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris (dew-worm) into arable zero-till clay. Seventeen years after introduction, which was originally aimed at improving the macroporosity and permeability of the heavy clay soil, we returned to the gradient of L. terrestris dispersal (well established, more recent and no settlement) and investigated the temporal development of the ecosystem engineering impacts on different faunal groups (earthworms, enchytraeids and nematodes) and soil porosity. The faunal re- sponses were examined both at L. terrestris midden scale (individual living site) and field scale. We found that L. terrestris middens sustained elevated densities of all three faunal groups. In the case of earth- worms, there was evidence for temporal development of the engineering impact as the difference be- tween the midden and non-midden areas was more pronounced in the well-established areas than close to the leading edge of dispersal. The earthworm community composition was not altered at L. terrestris midden sites. The settlement of L. terrestris had no discernible effects on field-scale earthworm and nematode abundances, but enchytraeids were practically absent beyond the leading edge of the dispersal. This effect might, however, be partly explained by a gradient of increasing clay content. Soil macroporosity at L. terrestris midden sites did not increase with the age of L. terrestris settlement. Our results suggest that L. terrestris settlement in a clay soil can significantly increase the spatial patchiness of soil fauna, but may not, except in the case of enchytraeids, affect their field-scale abundances or the macroporosity of the soil in the vicinity of L. terrestris living sites.

Hypothesis While multiphase flows, particularly droplet dynamics, are ordinary in nature as well as in industrial processes, their mathematical and computational modelling continue to pose challenging research tasks - patent approaches for tackling them are yet to be found. The lack of analytical flow field solutions for non-trivial droplet dynamics hinders validation of computer simulations and, hence, their application in research problems. High-speed videos and computer vision algorithms can provide a viable approach to validate simulations directly against experiments. Experiments Droplets of water (or glycerol-water mixtures) impacting on both hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces were imaged with a high-speed camera. The corresponding configurations were simulated using a lattice-Boltzmann multiphase scheme. Video frames from experiments and simulations were compared, by means of computer vision, over entire droplet impact events. Findings The proposed experimental validation procedure provides a detailed, dynamic one-on-one comparison of a droplet impact. The procedure relies on high-speed video recording of the experiments, computer vision, and on a software package for the analyzation routines. The procedure is able to quantitatively validate computer simulations against experiments and it is widely applicable to multiphase flow systems in general.

Pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) are gaining increasing interest in the context of biomass valorization. However, these processes yield a liquid fraction with an acidic pH value challenging to productize. In this paper, the possibility of replacing concentrated acids in acidification of animal slurry with organic acids derived from thermochemical conversion of various biomasses was investigated. The acid composition of four pyrolysis and one HTC liquid fraction were characterized using capillary electrophoresis and their total acidity determined titrimetrically. The amount of each liquid needed to reduce the pH of pig and cattle slurries to 6.0 and 5.5 were recorded. The total acidity of pyrolysis liquids varied highly (850-2560 meq l-1) depending on the biomass. For HTC liquid the total acidity was low (220 meq l-1). The most concentrated liquid, which showed greatest potential for practical use, was derived from pyrolysis of willow wood. Its required application rate for decreasing the pH of the slurries from >7.5 to 6.0 was 20-50 l t-1. This study suggests that there is a possibility of using liquids from pyrolysis process for acidification of animal slurries. Producing more concentrated liquids, further concentration of these acidiferous streams and the effects of the liquid addition on the properties of slurry are worth further studying.

Raindrops that impact on soil surface affect the pore structure and form compact soil surface seals. Damaged pore structure reduces water infiltration which can lead to increased soil erosion. We introduce here methods to characterize the properties of surface seals in a detailed manner. These methods include rainfall simulations, x-ray microtomography, image analysis and pore-scale flow simulations. Methods were tested using clay soil samples, and the results indicate that the sealing process changes several properties of the pore structure.

Soil test P (STP) concentration indicates whether annual P applications can be expected to give yield increases and can also indicate an elevated risk of P mobilization and potential for P transfer to surface waters and groundwater from a particular field. Changes in STP with time thus project agronomic benefits and environmental risks of different P use strategies. To predict STP changes with time, we constructed a simple dynamic model for which the input variables are P balance and initial STP. The model parameters (soil type-specific constants) were fitted using data originating from 44 P fertilizer experiments with different P rates. Model performance was evaluated using independent data sets that either had reasonably accurate input values ( = 103) or were obtained from farmers through interviews ( = 638). The simulations were in agreement with measured STP changes for both evaluation data sets when fittings were performed separately for four main soil types (clays, silts, coarse mineral soils, and organic soils). Statistical analysis confirmed that the model captured the trends in STP (NHOAc test) with acceptable accuracy and precision, with of 0.83 and 0.66 for the data with more accurate input and for farmer interview data, respectively; the corresponding model efficiency statistics were 0.88 and 0.66. The model is not restricted to use with one soil test, as fittings for several different types of soil tests can be generated. In this study, we fitted the model for Olsen P data retrieved from the literature. Agronomic use of the model includes evaluation of P use strategies, e.g., when a certain STP level is targeted or when long-term economy of P use is calculated. In an environmental context, the model can be used to predict STP changes with time under variable P balance regimes, which is essential for realistic assessment of changes in the potential for dissolved P losses.

In this contribution we review recent efforts on investigations of the effect of (apparent) boundary slip by utilizing lattice Boltzmann simulations. We demonstrate the applicability of the method to treat fundamental questions in microfluidics by investigating fluid flow in hydrophobic and rough microchannels as well as over surfaces covered by nano- or microscale gas bubbles., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We investigate imbibition of a wetting liquid in power-law-shaped channels by numerical simulations with a two-phase lattice Boltzmann model. At short times, the dynamics of the imbibition follows diffusive scaling similar to that in uniform capillaries, but at longer times power-law behavior with exponent depending on the channel shape changes is observed. The observed behavior is in exact agreement with a recent theory of Reyssat and co-workers.1

During the last decade, the lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM) as a valuable tool in computational fluid dynamics has been increasingly acknowledged. The widespread application of LBM is partly due to the simplicity of its coding. The most well-known algorithms for the implementation of the standard lattice-Boltzmann equation (LBE) are the two-lattice and two-step algorithms. However, implementations of the two-lattice or the two-step algorithm suffer from high memory consumption or poor computational performance, respectively. Ultimately, the computing resources available decide which of the two disadvantages is more critical. Here we introduce a new algorithm, called the swap algorithm, for the implementation of LBE. Simulation results demonstrate that implementations based on the swap algorithm can achieve high computational performance and have very low memory consumption. Furthermore, we show how the performance of its implementations can be further improved by code optimization.

We have simulated intrusion of a non-wetting liquid into pores of varying shape and size. Simulations were based on the lattice-Boltzmann method and the Shan–Chen multiphase model. The liquid–solid contact angle for pores with circular cross-section was found to be equal to that for pores with square cross-section, and constant even for small pore sizes if the discretised shape of the circular cross-section was taken into account. For comparison, contact angle was also determined for a liquid column descending in a capillary tube, and the results were found to be consistent. Application of the method to mercury intrusion porosimetry is discussed.

Matrix diffusion is a phenomenon in which tracer particles convected along a flow channel can diffuse into porous walls of the channel, and it causes a delay and broadening of the breakthrough curve of a tracer pulse. Analytical and numerical methods exist for modeling matrix diffusion, but there are still some features of this phenomenon, which are difficult to address using traditional approaches. To this end we propose to use the lattice-Boltzmann method with point-like tracer particles. These particles move in a continuous space, are advected by the flow, and there is a stochastic force causing them to diffuse. This approach can be extended to include particle-particle and particle-wall interactions of the tracer. Numerical results that can also be considered as validation of the LBM approach, are reported. As the reference we use recently-derived analytical solutions for the breakthrough curve of the tracer.
