Abstract

A multidisciplinary science experiment was performed in K-12 classrooms focusing on the interconnection between technology with geology and chemistry. The engagement and passion for science of over eight hundred students across twenty-one classrooms, utilizing a combination of hands-on activities using relationships between Earth and space rock studies, followed by a remote access session wherein students remotely employed the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to validate their findings was investigated. Participants represent predominantly low-income minority communities, with little exposure to the themes and equipment used, despite being freely available resources. Students indicated greatly increased interest in scientific practices and careers, as well as a better grasp of the content as a result of the lab and remote access coupling format.

2. BUILDing Equity in STEM: A Collaborative Undergraduate Research Program to Increase Achievement of Underserved Community College Students

Abstract

Undergraduate research programs at community colleges maximize their impact through partnerships with baccalaureate-granting institutions, which provide much needed access to subject matter experts, research labs, and funding to underserved students. The program Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity: Promoting Opportunities for Diversity in Education and Research (BUILD PODER) partners baccalaureate-granting California State University, Northridge with community college faculty and students to facilitate undergraduate research and development at community colleges. Eighty-one community college students and 41 community college faculty mentors have participated in BUILD PODER, performing research in STEM and biomedical disciplines. The authors document student, faculty, and institutional outcomes as well as share best practices in forming community college-university partnerships. Future directions also are offered in the development and implementation of transdisciplinary, multiinstitutional community college collaborations.

Abstract

The investigation of the temperature dependence of the hydrogen transfer rate coefficients for the reactions OH + HBr, OD + HBr, OH + DBr and OD + DBr at temperatures between 120 and 224K using a pulsed uniform supersonic flow monitoring hydroxyl reactive loss is done. Below 200K there is strong temperature dependence in the kinetic isotope effects and the experimental observation of the inverse primary kinetic isotope effect is presented.

17. Low temperature behavior of neutral radical associations

Abstract

This dissertation presents results on the study of temperature dependence on neutral - neutral reactions. In particular OH radical reactions were studied taking advantage of the uniform supersonic expansions produced via a convergent-divergent Laval nozzle. The relative concentration of the OH radical was followed via laser induced fluorescence. The technique and the considerations of the uniform flow reactors used are considered. The method of analysis of the data obtained is also presented. The measurement of rate coefficients for several reactions is reported. These studies demonstrate the utility of this technique as both bimolecular and termolecular reactions have been studied in low temperature environments. Specifically, the temperature dependence of the rate coefficient for the bimolecular reaction, OH + HBr has been investigated at low temperatures (T = 48-224 K) using both the pulsed and continuous uniform supersonic flow reactors. This reaction shows interesting temperature dependence, which can be accurately described with two forms of global fits: UNFORMATTED FORMULA FOLLOWS: k(T) = 1.11 x 10⁻¹¹ [T/298]⁻⁰˙⁹¹ and k(T) = 1.06 x 10⁻¹¹ [T/298]⁻¹˙⁰⁹ exp [(-10.5K)/T] cm³3s⁻¹. UNFORMATTED FORMULA END To aid in understanding this interesting temperature dependence investigations were performed on reactions of OH and OD radicals with HBr and DBr between 120--224 K, using the pulsed uniform supersonic flow reactor. Though the rates are measured by hydroxyl loss, the lack of observed isotopic scrambling indicates the reaction occurs by H/D transfer at all temperatures. The current work provides unequivocal experimental evidence of inverse primary and secondary kinetic isotope effects (kH/kD < 1) at low temperatures. Also reported are measurements of the temperature and pressure dependence of the recombination rate of the atmospherically important reaction OH + NO₂ in both the pulsed and uniform supersonic flow reactor. Abstract

El presente ejercicio investigativo, desarrollado en la Institución Educativa Rural Granjas Infantiles del municipio de Copacabana estuvo orientado a determinar la incidencia que tiene el diseño de propuestas didácticas desde los lineamiento del enfoque de enseñanza por Indagación en la cualificación del aprendizaje de la estructura y la organizaciones de los ecosistemas en estudiantes del grado quinto de básica primaria. Dicha incidencia se determina mediante la participación de los estudiantes en el desarrollo de guías, prácticas e investigaciones diseñadas en el marco de situaciones contextuales, así como de sus desempeños frente a instrumentos evaluativos formulados según los lineamientos de las pruebas saber. Se concluyó la pertinencia del enfoque de indagación en el mejoramiento de las prácticas de aula de ciencias naturales, así como en el aprendizaje, la participación y la actitud de los estudiantes hacia la ciencia escolar y los modos y las habilidades para hacerla. Abstract: The present research exercise, developed at I.E.R Granjas Infantiles in the municipality of Copacabana, was aimed at determining the impact of the design of didactic proposals from the orientation of the teaching approach by Inquiry in the qualification of learning of the structure and organizations of the Ecosystems in fifth grade elementary students. This impact is determined by the participation of students in the development of guides, practices and research designed in the context of contextual situations, as well as their performance against evaluative instruments formulated according to the guidelines of the knowledge tests. The relevance of the inquiry approach to the improvement of natural science classroom practices as well as student learning, participation and attitude towards school science and the ways and skills to do it, was concluded.
