The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of age-graded differences in psychological flexibility, by examining the relationship between (subcomponents of) psychological flexibility and age in a large Dutch general population sample (N = 1770; Mage (SD) = 55.77 (14.31); range 18-92; 36.3% male and 63.7% female respondents). Gender, education, marital status, employment and positive affect were included as covariates. The results show that an inverted U-shaped model best supported the relationship between psychological flexibility and age, with an estimated peak at 59.44 years. The same inverted U-shape was observed for subcomponents “defusion” and “contact with the present moment”, with estimated peaks at the age of respectively 60.24 and 62.86 years. A negative cubic relationship was observed for the subcomponent “acceptance”, with an estimated minimum and maximum at 29.85 and 62.60 years old. The relationship between “self as context” and age was best supported by a positive linear function, while for “committed action” a negative linear model was observed. Lastly, the relationship between “values” and age was not significant. Demographic variables (except for gender) and positive affect played a significant role. The results suggest, overall, that the ability to flexibly deal with situations, thoughts and feelings and to lead a meaningful life is strongest for individuals around the age of 60.

Background: Bonding social capital (BoSC) was previously found as an important ingredient for positive aging and to be stronger related to mental well-being in an older population than bridging social capital (BrSC). Exploring the theoretical explanation based on the socio-emotional selectivity theory (SEST), will add to our knowledge about positive aging processes.Aims: This study examines the assumption of the SEST, that in later life people prefer interaction with socioemotionally important others as they add to positive experiences in present time.We have examined the hypotheses that (1) BoSC is stronger associated with well-being than BrSC in later life, and (2) this association is mediated by experiences of positive affect (PA). Method: A sample of Dutch older adults (50+ years) filled out two online questionnaires, with an interval of four weeks, measuring BoSC and BrSC (PSCSE, Simons et al. 2019) and PA (PANAS, Watson et al.,1988) at T1 (n=319, Mage(SD)=61.28(7.65), Rangeage=50-93) and well-being (MHF-SF, Lamers et al. 2011) at T2 (n=202 Mage(SD)=61.31(7.47), Rangeage=50-93). Relevant (demographic) confounders were also measured. Results: Regression analysis including BoSC(T1) and BrSC(T1) as predictors, as well as relevant covariates, found a significant positive association between BoSC and well-being(T2). Mediation analysis showed that this association was partly mediated by PA(T1). No association was found between BrSC and well-being(T2) or between BrSC and PA. Conclusion: Our findings support the SEST and further illustrate the importance of bonding social capital in positive aging as a resource of opportunities to experience positive emotions, contributing to overall well-being in later life.

Objectives:Acceptance and Commitment Therapy has the potential to support positive aging processes. Therefore we examined the feasibility and acceptability of a new unguided eHealth ACT module for middle-aged and older adults. Method: Data was collected at two measurement points in time (before and after completion of the ACT module). 313 participants (range=40-75 years; Mean(SD)=54 years (8.3); 76% female) had eight weeks access to the ACT module and responded to the feasibility questionnaire, upon completion of the module. Logged data (time spent online per session and in total, number of attendedsessions) was also analyzed. Results: Of the respondents 76% reported a completion rate of 75%-100%. On average 3.5 hours (SD= 6.4) per week were spent on the module and practicing the ACT skills. The mean evaluation of the module was 7.4 (SD = 1.2). The majority of the participants rated each session as good. Absence of guidance was marked as a limitation. Conclusion: The results indicate a good feasibility and acceptance of this unguided eHealth module. Therefore, this eHealth ACT module has the potential to make ACT accessible to a large group. The effectiveness results will be addressed in further research.

Besides disease-directed therapy, patients with lymphoma are in need of a supportive measures. In the second part of this guideline, the prevention and treatment of tumour lysis dyndrome, cardiac support and physiotherapy are discussed.

Background The aim of MDTM’s is to ensure that all patients receive qualitative care from appropriately skilled professionals. However, empirical research shows that multidisciplinary team discussions do not always live up to their positive expectations. In discussions the team cycles through three main communicative phases: exploration, discussion and conclusion. The goal of this study is to gain insight in the structure of regional neuro-oncology MDTM’s and find an overarching reason why some discussions follow a different structure (or phase shifts) than others. Material and Methods We recorded 14 neuro-oncology MDTM’s in an non-academic Dutch Hospital by audio and video. All recordings were transcribed into time stamped sequences of verbal contributions. Every time stamped sequence was coded using a developed coding scheme. Results In total 14 regional Neuro-oncology MDMT’s were recorded, this resulted in 437 patient case reviews and 12512 coded verbal contributions. In each meeting the uniquely contributing members ranged from 12-21 members (M= 15.5, SD = 2.71) from 5 different institutions. The average of different disciplines was 7 disciplines (M=7.14, SD = 0.77). In 41% of the patient discussions there are two or three contributing disciplines in the decision making process. The maximum number of uniquely participating members in a patient discussion is 8 members. In only 28% of the case discussions 5 or more participants participated. Different categories for discussing a patient in an MTDM were found, these categories varied in specificity. From high to low specificity we found: justifying actions, pathology reviews, action-directed questions and open questions. We also found that in 20% of all patient case discussions the teams bypass the discussion phase. Conclusion MDTM’s are widely accepted and implemented. Therefore we should gain more insight in the structure and functioning of such teams. We found that there are different reasons for presenting a case which vary in their specificity. Our findings show that teams seem to deviate from the overall communication structure by bypassing the discussion phase in 20% of the cases. We also found that in 28% of patient discussions more than five participants contributed to the discussion. A future direction of organisation of MDTMs could be to clearly categorize on beforehand the patient questions in order to make the MDTM more efficient. Further analysis will include quality evaluation of MDTM’s, in neuro-oncology and other oncology domains. We examined hypothesized negative associations between bonding social capital (BSC) and respectively age and loneliness and positive associations between BSC and respectively psychological, social and emotional well-being. Furthermore the associations between digital media applications - that is the use of Whatsapp and Social Network Sites (SNS) - and BSC were explored.Method: In this cross-sectional study a sample of 274 Dutch older adults (Range=70y-93y; Mean(SD)=74.4y(4.6y); 34% female vs 66% male) filled out an online or printed questionnaire measuring BSC (PSCSE, Simons et al. 2019), psychological, social and emotional well-being (MHF-SF, Lamers et al. 2011), and loneliness (De Jong Gierveld & Van Tilburg, 2006) as well as SNS and Whatsapp use.Results: Regression analyses including relevant covariates confirmed our hypotheses and found BSC to be negatively associated with age and loneliness and positively associated with respectively psychological, social and emotional well-being. Also a positive association between the use of Whatsapp and BSC was found. No association was found with SNS use.Conclusion: Our findings indicate that BSC is an important factor in positive aging. The negative association between BSC and age illustrates the widening gap between the need for socio-emotional resources versus its availability and urges us to further explore ways to help older adults in preserving their BSC. Our results may indicate that Whatsapp can be useful for the elderly to support their BSC. However digital media use differ among age groups and it seems fruitful to further explore the potential value of digital media for current and future older populations.
