Trait-theory states that personality [...], This study explores the relationship between PEN profiles, delinquency, and recidivism in young offenders. According to Eysenck, personality is based on three basic Dimensions: Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism (PEN-model). Eysenck states that delinquents score high on all three dimensions. A group of young male offenders in a juvenile detention center in the Netherlands were studied to test Eysenck's hypothesis, which was partially confirmed. From a cluster analysis it appear that only a small group of offenders had high scores on all three PEN dimensions. Finally, it was concluded that the PEN profiles were not able to differentiate between recidivists and nonrecidivists.

This study prospectively examined the effects of adolescent (N = 81) and professional caregiver (N = 33) attachment representations, measured using the Adult Attachment Interview, on therapeutic relationships in a youth treatment institution. After the first 3 months of the clients' stay in the institution, no effects of adolescents' or mentors' (i.e., the professional caregiver assigned) security and type of attachment representations were found. In a subgroup of 28 clients staying for a longer period, more secure adolescents were perceived by their mentors as increasing their secure base use and decreasing avoidance of contact, whereas more secure mentors were increasingly perceived as available as a secure base. Moreover, specific combinations of attachment representations of mentor and adolescent had different effects on adolescent hostility. Researchers developed a model to give insight into the relationship between social class and parenting behaviors. Application of the model to a sample of 237 parents supports the hypothesis that parental perspective taking is an influential variable in the relationship between social class and childrearing behavior, and that parental value orientations are not causally related to childrearing behavior. The study revealed that parental perspective mediates between social class and childrearing behavior whilst also influencing parental value orientation.

This study examined relationships between parents' child-rearing style, the child's prosocial behavior, and the child's sociometric status. The sample consisted of 1 12 children 6-1 1 years of age) and both their parents. Parental behavior in the interaction with the child was observed at home when parents and child worked together in 2 structured tasks. Factor analyses of parental behavior revealed that 2 factors, Authoritative/Democratic and Authoritarian/Restrictive, can be found in the subsamples of mothers and fathers. These 2 dimensions of maternal and paternal behavior appeared to be predictive of both the child's prosocial behavior and sociometric status. Results are discussed in terms of the possible link between parent and peer systems.

The level validity of the family assessment instruments for measuring warmth in family relationships is analyzed. The results suggest the need to access individual family members rating of whole family warmth rather than considering the family as a single unit.

Children's perception of maternal methods and goals is in moderate agreement with the mothers' reported used of these methods and goals, according to research into the extent to which a child's perceptions of the mother's goals function as a mediating link between maternal behaviours and child outcomes. There was found to be a positive correlation between the nature of the child's internal processing and self-regulation on a shared task. Taking account of the child's processing of parental actions makes a substantial contribution to the debate about the effects of parental disciplinary methods on developmental outcomes.

This study explored the relationship between television viewing and young females' images of motherhood. The respondents were 166 Dutch adolescents (age 15-17) and young women (age 20-22) with various educational backgrounds. None were mothers. We examined the young females' self-image and ideal image of motherhood and explored the extent to which television viewing and viewing motives were related to these images. It was not the total amount of televesion exposure, but the exposure to certain sitcoms and soaps that appeared to be related to girls' and young women's images of their future motherhood. Sitcoms and soaps that portrayed mothers with a more traditional orientation were associated with young females' anticipation of a traditional motherhood image. Motives for television viewing, indicating a ritualized viewing style, were also related to a traditional view of motherhood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
